There was something about being in the wrong place at the wrong time that just made one’s hair stand on end. It was a palpable feeling that filled the stomach with a sour ichor, generating bile that threatened to blast up at any moment. Wicked intent was not always so easy to distinguish but when it was on the forefront of everything and openly displayed, it was hard to ignore. Even from a distance, one could tell that they were in for a challenge that could threaten one’s very life. Then again, that was a generalization in these lands that lay before them. There was a reason it was called the Spooky Forest and not the Forest of Cuddly Warm Fuzzy Wuzzies. It’s very nature was chilling right to the bone and left the one’s courage feeling worn and weary.

But Gren Ragnos was used to this kind of sensation at this point. How rare was it for him to go somewhere that felt warm and welcoming, even within the walls of the Order of Souls’ complex. He was an agent, dispatched to investigate paranormal rumblings and magical curiosities and report back to his superiors. Only a few of those instances resulted in him actually having to fight enemies but the danger was always present. It was a part of the job at this point and he felt it better not to linger on it, lest he should start to question his motives. He owed the Order his literal life and the meaningful tasks they sent him on were genuine, if not a bit shady. But even then, he understood why they moved through the shadows with such cloak and dagger intent.

When he had returned from finally seeing Mythal again and connecting with friends and family, his allegiance to the Order had been… strained. Though he’d always had the thoughts about how painful it was to be apart from his son, they had come rushing through his excuses like a tidal wave after everything he’d discussed with Serilda. She’d laid it out plain for him, unwilling to compromise in her beliefs and understandings without substance. It was a rewarding encounter, one he was thankful for even as he trudged through the dark canopy of Spooky Forest. She’d helped him gather the courage to speak up about his misgivings when he returned and his reward for his stance had been surprisingly enlightening. He’d been given access to an entire slew of new understanding when it came to the Order of Souls, having earned the trust of both Zifu Kuttuvan and her husband, the Master of the Order. He’d come to understand just how important Mythal was to the order, not even as a weapon but as a living, breathing person.

Of course, his understanding and revelations had been kept quiet. He’d been assured that the Order was taking steps and making preparations to properly introduce themselves to Serilda and Mythal but it required time. And frankly, it required security as well. He’d learned more about the threats that had previously and presently brought danger to the Order’s doorstep and, more importantly, how his role in it played. The sweet spot for an introduction hadn’t been properly met yet, though there had been several close moments. Yet each time something new had suddenly cropped up and created tension and threat towards the Order and the ones they sought to meet. It was frustrating but there wasn’t much Gren could do about it, save try and intercede on their behalf where and when he could.

In the meantime, he was given full reign to meet with his son and his betrothed as often as he liked, so long as he was quiet about it. He got several opportunities to see them, finally settling back into the role of father that he had missed for so long. Mythal had grown up to become a fine man, if not a bit grumpy and anti-social. He and Serilda were two halves of the same coin and it delighted the former Knight to see them happy with one another. He hadn’t expected many large steps in a short amount of time but the ascending staircase of a solid relationship was there; it would just take patience and time. Yet right in the midst of reconnecting with his friends and family, Seri and Mythal had brought to him a mind-boggling revelation that had shaken him to his core.

Vandrad duWolff had approached them and revealed that he was, in fact, the son of Gren and Themesycia. The name brought back bittersweet memories, ones that he had even revealed to Serilda the first time they had properly interacted. They’d parted many years ago after a truly terrifying situation, with the Knight expressing how willing he was to explore more of their relationship. But the now-Duchess had turned him down, stating that she had simply gotten caught up in the moment. It had hurt, as he had truly felt something for Themesycia but he had bid her farewell and returned to his duties. A motion that had turned out beneficial; if he had gone with Themesycia all those years ago, there was no telling what would have befallen Mythal. But the fact remained that she had gotten pregnant from their intercourse and had never sought to inform him of his true-blood son. It was a slight he didn’t take easy but he put it aside for the sake of meeting Vandrad.

And he did want to meet Vandrad, sooner rather than later. In fact, his current mission was to be his last before he set out to go and meet the prince. It was a mind-boggling thought, knowing that he had a son that was nearly forty years old at that point. So many years passed that he had gone without meeting Vandrad and he wasn’t sure just how their first meeting would go about. He’d wracked his brain trying to think of what the right thing was to say, what he should do, if he should bring anything and the like. If he thought that re-meeting Mythal after so many years was going to be awkward, this was going to be an entirely new level. It was these thoughts that kept his attention most of the way and that, in turn, caused him to remain awfully quiet.

"Hey geezer, you’ve been awfully quiet this entire time. Not that I mind -- watchin’ your ass is more than enough entertainment for me.”

Gren sighed softly as he turned his gaze backwards at his partner for his mission. A woman in her late 20’s, she was about as crass and forward as anyone could be. She stood a head shorter than him and looked like she rather belonged in a biker gang than on a job with the Order of Souls. The sides of her head were shaved down to the scalp, with a thin strip of dark brown hair running down the middle of her skull before coming to an end near the top of the bulb. The rest of the hair was pulled back into a ponytail. Symbol tattoos ran along her scalp to her temple, with the rest of it hiding beneath her grown hair. A gold metal trinket covered the entirety of her right ear, pierced through the thin flesh three distinct points like earrings. More tattoos appeared on her neck and spread over her body, her torso a tapestry of colorful art. She covered most of it with clothing, when she opted to wear articles of clothing. For this mission she had chosen a studded leather jacket on top of wrapped white straps that curled around her neck and held her nearly flat chest in place. Her midriff was on display, save for the crossover of the straps that covered her belly button and ran down into her pants. Tight brown slacks clung to her hips and legs, with openings directly over her hips to reveal more tattooed flesh. Her belt was adorned with holsters for firearms on either side, with one such weapon safely nestled into her left side. Long black boots covered her feet, with dull heels digging into the mossy ground with little to no sound.

Her name was Monica Belle and she was a member of Lusty Titan. “You might want to keep your attention on watchin’ your surroundin’s, Ms. Belle,” Gren replied coolly, giving her a coy look.

"Hey, I got peripheral vision. I can see plenty around that juicy butt of yours,” she teased back, giving him a mischievous grin. "Also I told ya to call me Monica. Ms. Belle makes me sound like a fuckin’ teacher.”

One of the Order of Souls first moves in recent times was to reach out to the Lusty Titans guild, an independent establishment that was run by the Prime Sin of Lust, Ruzatz. He was an intriguing demon that had been on the Order’s radar for a long time, simply because he seemed completely disinterested in causing issues to the living world. In fact, he had gone as far as to marry a human woman, Agatha, without corrupting her or turning her into a demon. Now he ran a guild that traded in information and simply enjoyed the more… colorful aspects of life. All the data gathered on him seemed to point to him being an ally against the more corrupted forces in the pathos and after discovering his actions to aid Mythal, the time had come to reach out. Luckily Ruzatz was more than welcoming and sought to assist the Order, stating that he was a fan of their work already. Partnering Monica and Gren was only one step in a larger scale trial to establish a true partnership.

In fact, this mission had come from a prior joint effort between Lusty Titans and the Order. Through hardship and investigation, it had been discovered that several members of the former Sons of Faera were still alive. Though most of them operated in their daily lives like they had given up their prior commitments, there was still reason to speculate. And finally they’d made a grand stride -- one of the members had been called to a meeting in Spooky Forest under the auspices of establishing a new connection to a client. It looked commonplace on the face of things but nobody simply went to Spooky Forest on a whim or attempted some kind of business meeting. It didn’t make much sense. So Gren and Monica were sent in to eavesdrop and see what they could learn.

"You oughta be proud, chief. Two whole mission’s and we ain’t even slept together yet. I ain’t gonna lie to you and say it ain’t easy to get me out of my pants either if ya really wanted…”

“Well, there are several factors contributin’ to that fact,” Gren said matter-of-factually as he stopped before a steep hillside. His eyes trailed over to a series of trees that seemed to stretch up towards the top of the hill. The meeting place was on the other side of this land swell and using one of the trees, they should be able to get up and hidden without anyone noticing.

"Oh really? What’s that?” She asked curiously, genuinely interested in his thoughts.

“Well one, we’re on a job. Two, there could be people waitin’ to kill us around each and every corner. And three, I had duties that keep me from focusin’ on who I am or am not sleepin’ with,” Gren explained as he walked over to the nearest tree and leapt up to the trunk. Grabbing it with both hands, he hoisted himself up and then turned around, offering his hand down to her. She took it and allowed herself to be pulled up from the ground, though she snuggled a bit closer to him as they stood on the branch together.

"I dunno, sounds like lame ass excuses to me,” she said, that same wicked twinkle in her eye. She was even moving her head in to try and steal a kiss from him before he ducked back and leapt to another branch. She rolled her eyes, though still managing to smirk in amusement. After all, the hardest to catch were always the most fun.

She followed him from branch to branch, moving even quieter than he already was. Soon enough they made it onto the tree that rested on the top of the hillside, keeping themselves close to the trunk and finding an extension that gave them a perfect view of the area below. It was a glade, hidden among the mossy hills, with several stumps aligned in a circle. A large bonfire was blazing in the center of the stumps, several logs piled up to keep the fire roaring for some time. The clearing was empty as they settled in but within a few minutes, two figures had made their way over the opposing hill and were descending to the spot. They were cloaked in dark brown robes, the cowls hiding their features as well.

“... dangerous to meet like this and on such short notice,” one of them said, a soft male voice.

“The time is upon us. We could not afford to wait,” the other said, a deep female voice.

“Why were we not prepared for this? The Dark Mistress usually provides signs that she intends to act, yet we have not seen anything in so long. Why was it just you who received anything?” the man asked hurriedly.

“There are three reasons. The first is that our Dark Mistress sought alternative methods to her ascending beyond the one she will now partake in. It is a dangerous task and ritual but it seems that her options are limited and she desires to bring her vision to this world sooner rather than later. Her Trumpets are already placed about the world and are ready to provide aid once she has arrived. But she must act swiftly and quietly so she only brought visions to those that she deemed worthy. The second reason is, of course, that I was the one tasked with observing Archimedes’ daughter, the failed vessel. I was able to report when the Rune Knights moved in and captured her, seemingly bringing the threat of her rebellion to an end.”

“Was that ever a concern? She was a failed vessel, clearly she lacks the ability or strength to rival our Dark Mistress,” the man said, scoffing at the notion.

“Perhaps but our Dark Mistress believes there is something deeper at hand. You see the Son of Archimedes, the true vessel, has ventured to Kingdom Darkness and upon his arrival, brought forth a legend long since forgotten. That of the Darkness King.”

A long beat of stunned silence. “Can this be true? The horn of the Darkness King… did it ring?”

The woman nodded softly as she walked closer to the fire, holding out her hands to warm them. “It seems so. Our Dark Mistress wishes to take control of him before it is too late. By doing so, she’ll undoubtedly establish herself as the true ruler of creation. She will become the Darkness King and, as such, fulfill the prophecy that was once foretold.”

The man nodded softly. “When will she begin?”

The woman turned to him. “Why, it already has. Her message to her followers was merely the prologue before she began the ritual. Within hours, the true vessel will be hers and this world will fling open its doors to darkness.”

Gren’s muscles tensed up. Everything he’d heard thus far had been truly terrifying but nothing chilled him to the bone worse than hearing that Faera was already enacting her plan. She was not waiting or goading for a challenge -- she was looking to complete her mission before they even had time to retaliate. Every fiber in his being screamed at him to escape then and there, warp to Mythal and warn him of whatever was coming. But doing so would put Monica in danger… Even as he thought it, he felt a hand on his shoulder and looked over to see the woman. She was nodding, apparently understanding what he was feeling. She jerked her head to the side, signaling that they should get out of there. They both started to move out of their perches and prepared to make their quiet escape.

    “What was the third reason?”

They both stopped, turning to look over their shoulders at the meeting.

“Oh, that. Well, the third reason is that I knew I was being followed and studied. Faera entrusted me with the task of delivering this news to you and activating you, so that you could slay our shadows in the trees there.”

    "Oh fuck.”

A rush of magical power exploded out from the man’s robe and revealed a figure that was more ghost than man. A pure white humanoid figure from head to toe, he giggled maniacally as his golden eyes burned bright in the darkness of the forest. He pulled out a katana as black as night and rushed at the tree, swinging the weapon violently towards the trunk. Both Gren and Monica managed to dive out from the thicket of branches and leaves to the ground below, each one rolling out of their falls and getting to their feet.

“Well, well, well! A couple of little birdies. Where are your invitations?!” the white man demanded as he landed on the ground between them, looking in each of their directions with glee.

"Up your ass and around the corner, white boy,” Monica remarked.

“Oooh, how testy. I think I should start with you, pretty girl,” the creature hissed, turning to face her fully.

With the creature’s back to him, Gren cloaked himself in lightning and dashed forward, looking to slam his knee into the small of the back and break the spine in one swift motion. But before he could even fully move his leg, the creature had spun around and slammed the handle of the katana into his stomach, using the former Knight’s own momentum to purge the air from his lungs.

“Wait your turn!” The creature cackled before swinging its sword up, cutting the blade through Gren’s cheek and eyebrow. Blood burst from the wound and covered the older man’s eye, even as the pain radiated through his head. The creature was already setting up for another swing, this one far more lethal than the last.

"Watch your dick!” Monica told him, her body melting back into form right below the creature. Her fist, cloaked in a bright white fog, slammed into the monster’s groin with full force. Adding her strength to the attack, she followed through with the punch to send the creature soaring back into the woods, breaking through one full tree trunk and embedding in the one behind it.

Gren struggled to his feet, his face a bloody mess. Monica grabbed his arm and hoisted him up fully. "Plan?” she asked, her eyes trained on the creature already rousing and moving.

“Hold on!” Gren cried. Electricity surged out from his body and spread over the two of them, even as the monster launched itself from the tree right at them. Just as its sword swung, the two agents exploded upwards in a bolt of lightning, electrifying the creature as they made their hasty retreat. There was no time to waste.

They had to get to Mythal.

Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
    and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
It was turning into quite the busy day. Vandrad and Mercury had made plans to have dinner with Mythal and Serilda that day, an activity that had become a bit of a regular occurrence ever since their first meeting. The engaged couple had taken great strides in creating multiple opportunities for the four of them to get together, genuine in their desire to welcome Vandrad as family, and by extension to bring Mercury herself into the fold. Not that such gestures were entirely one sided, of course. At first the Fairy Tail and Silver Wolf mages had more or less left future interactions to the pair of Rune Knights, understanding that the two higher ranked mages were far more busy, with much more demanding schedules, and not wanting to interfere. However, they had been quickly brought to understand that reaching out to spend time with one another wasn’t a burden to the couple, who truly did their best to find times to see them.

Truth be told, Mercury rather liked both of them. Serilda was a bit more of a hardass like Vandrad was, much more muted in her displays of emotion, but she wasn’t without a sense of humor. The white haired goddess of Ishgar became much more personable in smaller groups, and the more time they spent with one another and getting to know each other, the more she appeared to relax. Mercury even noted that she was on par with the du Wolffs when it came to working with her servants, who clearly respected her and Mythal both, and loved working for them. She didn’t seem like the kind of noble that was afraid to get her hands dirty. On the flip side, Mythal was a bit more like Mercury herself: A bit unrefined in speech and mannerisms, not altogether worried about social propriety, a little more laid back and easy going. They had very similar senses of humor, and there were times that Mercury felt the man caught on more quickly to her more subtle wits and pranks than the two noble folk did. All in all Mercury actually looked forward to those get togethers. And granted, she liked doing just about anything social, but their trips down to Era were starting to become a highlight for her.

Earlier that day, the two independent mages had gone on a small mission together to pass the time until dinner. It had been an easy job rounding up a few pesky bandits that were trying to enforce a toll at a bridge out in the countryside. They hadn’t even broken a sweat during the ordeal, effortlessly tying the group up and depositing them at the nearest Rune Knight outpost, along with all the stolen goods they’d confiscated from them. From there, it had been a lazy trip back to Magnolia to wait out the rest of the afternoon with some piano lessons. Mercury had come quite a long way in mastering the instrument, and rarely showed much, if any, frustration at her lessons anymore. In fact, these days it was less doing lessons and more just spending some time playing music together.

A couple weeks had passed since their fateful trek out into the Unknown Lands where they’d run into Vandrad’s unfortunate guild mate, Louie. It was an encounter that had become far more than any of them had anticipated, with Vandrad revealing some new power he’d never shown before and causing Mercury to have to intervene to keep him from killing the pretty boy in a blind rage. She had no doubt in her mind that Vandrad wanted to kill Louie anyway, the stories of which she received after everything was said and done, but Mercury had guessed correctly that it was not an act he’d have wanted to commit while not in his right mind. Self control was very important to the hidden prince, and Mercury hadn’t been about to stand by and let him lose it like that.

Granted, the magic in and of itself had been an entirely different discussion. Vandrad had attempted rather valiantly to convince her that he had the strange energy mastered, but unfortunately for him Mercury knew him well enough to see right through his shit and she’d called him on it rather openly until he finally relented and regaled to her the several occurrences he’d had with the magic so far. Mercury had done her best to help him run tests and analysis ever since, but the energy was completely different from anything either of them had experienced before and they had not come along very far in their studies. A large part of her suspected that Patricia had something to do with it in some form -- after all, the woman had shown up out of the blue in the prince’s life boasting the same, extremely rare magic. But, she had no proof of that or even enough to have some solid speculation on the matter. It was more of a gut feeling than anything else, one that Mercury had yet to explore.

The crafty doctor wasn’t at the height of Mercury’s priority list at the moment, anyhow. Far more interesting was this dinner with Vandrad’s brother and future sister-in-law, for while such interactions were a normal occurrence by now, this one was slightly different in the sense that Serilda had thought it important to almost casually let slip that she had given all of her servants a few days off. There was only one reason Mercury could think of for Serilda to relay the otherwise uninteresting information: The noblewoman and her fiance wanted to meet with them in complete privacy. There had been no suggestion of this in her tone, as she was almost infuriatingly adept at masking her insinuations when she wanted to, but why else would she had mentioned it?

Whatever this dinner truly was, Mercury and Vandrad both were in agreement that it possibly had something to do with his father. There had been a lot of dancing around the subject ever since the four of them first met, and the prince had backed off from as much questioning as he’d actually wanted to do. He had gotten the feeling that it was not the prerogative of the two Rune Knight leaders to share whatever it was they knew, and they had likely needed time to put some things in motion on Vandrad’s behalf. Quite a bit of time had passed since then. Was his patience finally paying off? Was tonight the night his patience would pay off, and he would finally get more concrete information on his father?

Only time would tell, and needless to say it was a slow afternoon with both of their minds thinking forward to the evening. Mercury was dressed in her outfit and gear from the day’s earlier job, clad in a sleeveless white top that sported a popped collar and leather belt around her waist. It was set over a red shirt with a turtleneck, and the buttons only came down far enough to leave a little of her stomach exposed near her belly button. A brown miniskirt covered her ass, her gunblade holstered so that the case rested at the back of her legs. Wrapped around her thigh was a red leather pouch that she used to mask her magic. She wore blue, fingerless gloves on both hands, and on one arm she had a black sleeve that covered the length of the limb and led up to a single pauldron on the affiliated shoulder. A red cape draped itself from the pauldron, it’s length reaching far down her back to her thighs.

They had waited long enough before making their way over, touching down from their flight to land in the large driveway. At this point, Vandrad and Mercury had visited enough that Serilda had long since advised them not to worry about knocking when they visited, so with only a single look to Vandrad to ensure he was ready for whatever was about to happen tonight, she let him push the door open for them and lead the way into the foyer. “We’re here!” Mercury called out, already picking up Mythal and Serilda’s locations within the house on her internal radars. In her hands was a small covered platter with some dessert that they’d opted to bring to contribute to the meal for the night. The gathering without the servants to prepare anything had been a good excuse for Vandrad to get in a bit more baking lessons with Mercury, and together the two of them had made a plate of rich brownies with chunks of chocolate inside and drizzled with homemade caramel sauce. They smelled fantastic, and frankly she couldn’t wait to sink her teeth into them.

“We brought some brownies,” she said as they made their way into the kitchen where Serilda was checking the time left on the oven. “If they suck, blame Vandrad. But if they taste as good as they smell, it was all me.”

A lot was changing. A lot had changed. And with each step and toiled movement forward, Vandrad’s life continued to get all the more strange. One second he thought he understood what was happening and what the world was doing and the next, it had turned itself upside and landed on him without warning. There were so many strange happenings that the prince had only stopped counting and simply let the punches roll in. It was easier and less strenuous that way. At the very least, it was safe to say that the day Vandrad had been waiting for had finally come. After all the patience and the trials and the meetings, he finally had cause to believe that he was going to be finally meeting his father. And that was a step in an entirely new direction that he’d never even ventured to think about.

It was far from the only thing in his mind. In fact, he wished it took more priority but somehow it had fallen into the mass of other thoughts, concerns and wonderings that were floating around in his brain. And that was simply because things kept coming up. The most pressing issue was the fact that his magic -- or some kind of magic -- was running haywire in his body. It had all started back when he was training with Magnus and had come face to face with the man’s holy body. It had been impressive and surely would have given the prince a run for his money. But suddenly he was overwhelmed with a rage unfathomable, engulfed in a fury that grabbed him and dragged him down into the wake beneath. In that anger he found power and it overwhelmed his form, transforming him granting him access to abilities he had never experienced before. Luckily Magnus had managed to survive and Vandrad had been left curious, wondering if he had activated something accidentally. It wasn’t until he had journeyed to the bar with the demons that it had happened again but that time, he had fallen into a comatose state and when he awoke, all of the creatures had been viciously slain. It wasn’t even a full day after that that he experienced the same thing with another group of demons.

He couldn’t explain it and frankly, his devices registered nothing strange about his magic. He’d opted to continue his study when he could, determined to find the reason for his sudden lack of control. If there was one thing Vandrad clung to, it was his ability to always keep himself grounded. Having portions of his abilities acting out wasn’t acceptable and he would put a stop to it. Why he kept it from Mercury in the first place, he wasn’t sure. Maybe he was embarrassed or ashamed of the sudden bursts of lethal rage. But it wouldn’t be a secret for very long. Somehow, his own rage and hatred towards his guildmate, Louie, had activated his power once more. He’d nearly killed the pretty boy and, while that wouldn’t have left him with any shame or regret, doing so when he wasn’t in control was wrong. Luckily Mercury had been there to stop him, kicking him away and hitting him hard enough to shake his loss of mobility and allow him to reign it in. He’d attempted to explain that he had everything under control but blast the woman if she didn’t see right through him.

She was surprisingly less angry about him hiding it than he figured. Though honestly, he was waiting for her to throw it back in his face when it best suited her -- that seemed more her style. Instead, she joined him in his study and attempted to help him figure out what was happening. Even with her advanced knowledge and technology, they still hadn’t come to any decent conclusions. While Mercury had her own assumptions about it being involved with Patricia, Vandrad hadn’t even considered that aspect. He hadn’t seen the scientist in some time, though she had come calling apparently a few times while he was out on jobs or with Mercury. The fairies were always so willing to let him know about another woman calling upon him with smug and chuckling amusement. While she had used her magic to give him a preview of what he would eventually -- and already had -- attained, he didn’t figure she had managed to do anything else. Then again, all possibilities were on the table until they were disproven.

He made the conscious choice to stop worrying about it for the day. They were heading to Era to see Serilda and Mythal and have dinner with them. This had somehow become a tradition between the four of them, as Vandrad sought to learn more about his adoptive brother and the family he was marrying into. They were pleasant people; considerate and kind in all things, it seemed. While he enjoyed Mythal, he was arguably more connected to Serilda. They each had royal backgrounds and, as such, were both raised in a similar upbringings. There was a poise about her that the prince respected and her mannerisms were all too familiar. Ironically enough, Mercury and Mythal seemed more on the same level and often seemed to share their own jokes. It was… odd to have other people that he enjoyed, especially a couple. It hadn’t gone unnoticed by the prince the fact that they had, in a way, become a group of double dating couples. He just refused to acknowledge or remark on it, much like any other feelings that occasionally tried to creep up and remind him of their existence.

But this particular evening was strange. Apparently Serilda had let it slip to Mercury that the servants had been given a small vacation so that the Rune Knights could have the run of the house. That meant that they were looking to have Vandrad and Mercury over for a private dinner. Without prying eyes and ears, there was the opportunity to discuss or reveal more information that had been kept quiet before. That or the leaders of the Rune Knights were swingers and were seeking to ask them to participate as partners. That possibility was less likely but still not impossible. He truly hoped it wasn’t that option.

Nonetheless, the far more likely path was that they were going to be bringing Gren forward to finally meet his son. Surprisingly, the prince was rather calm over that chance for most of the day. He and Mercury had taken a job that was meant to eat up most of the daylight hours but ended up being far easier than expected. With nothing else to do, they returned to Fairy Tail and played a little bit of piano. Calling them ‘lessons’ at this point was useless; the Silver Wolf mage had all but mastered the instrument. Now more of their sessions involved her playing piano and him plucking along on a guitar in what could only be considered a ‘jam’ session. Soon enough she would know the keys in her sleep. Before long, they had quit their playing and moved to the kitchen, so as to prepare a dessert for the evening. At least here Vandrad was still providing some kind of mentoring, as they prepared brownies.

Soon enough they were, quite literally, bursting through the door to the home. Mercury did like to make an entrance after all and in her outfit, she was certainly looking for the attention. Vandrad had come in a simple blue tank top and blue pants, perfectly matching that they almost looked uniform as one outfit. He’d opted out of wearing his gloves for the evening but he still bore his boots. He followed after Mercury as she announced their arrival, trailing after her as she made her way to the kitchen. Once there, she proclaimed that any disastrous results from the brownies were to be blamed on him but prosperous claims were all accredited to her. "I don’t know why I expected anything different,” he muttered to himself, shaking his head. "Good evening, Serilda. I trust everything is well?”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
It had been quite some time since Serilda was this excited about something. This had been a long time coming, longer even than she had been involved with it, and it was a great source of honor and pleasure on her part to have been able to help facilitate the matter. Vandrad, as well as his odd “friend” Mercury, had come into their lives rather unexpectedly not too long ago, and nothing had been the same since. Thankfully, it was in a good way. The four of them had taken up rather quickly with seeing one another on a regular basis. There seemed to be no resentment from Vandrad at all that Mythal had grown up as the only son Gren had ever known, the prince simply content with the opportunity to connect with family he never knew he had and learning more about his father.

The four of them got along quite well, at least as far as Serilda could surmise. Mythal wasn’t always the most social of individuals, and all it had taken was meeting Vandrad to know that it was a trait the brothers shared. If anything, Vandrad was the more reluctant to be involved in social gatherings. However, they both were much more comfortable with smaller interactions, and the regular dinners and meetups that they had were the perfect conductor to the two of them forming a relationship with one another. Perhaps it was because Serilda had been with Mythal so long and watched him grow from a fairly ornery person to the man he was now, but she found herself rather fond of her fellow nobleman despite his… grumpier demeanors. Most of it she felt was just show, anyhow. But the fact remained that they actually saw eye to eye on quite a number of things, regardless of their different royal backgrounds, and they had their own unique way of being friendly with one another.

Then there was Mercury. Boy, was that girl something else. Serilda wondered almost every time the four of them got together how in the world the two of them had ever become such good friends. The lavender haired woman was completely different in every aspect from Vandrad: wild, impulsive, an imp and a prankster. She wasn’t boisterous or over the top, often playing more on the subtle and playful side of manipulation, but the two of them were practically oil and water. Mercury picked on Vandrad all the time, and he simply grumbled and took it most of the time. Yet, it was obvious to anyone who looked that they were extremely fond and protective of one another, and none of Mercury’s mannerisms ever seemed to cross whatever lines were there.

There was also no doubt in Mythal or Serilda’s mind that the two of them were sleeping together.

The both of them had proved themselves to be fairly genuine people, and the noblewoman was happy for Mythal to have some semblance of real family in his life. He’d been without that for so long since Gren had died, and even after the man returned they could still only see him on a limited basis due to how busy he was with the mysterious and suspicious group he worked for. He had a sister, too, but any hope of that ever amounting to an actual familial bond was fleeting at best. Vriko had already hated Mythal before he even knew she existed, and now her ire with her brother and future sister-in-law was all the greater since they’d successfully captured and arrested her. Ultimately, Vriko had not fought against her incarceration, but that did not mean that she accepted it, nor that she intended on no longer fighting at all. Serilda had every faith that if Vriko found an opportunity to escape or get back at them that she would not hesitate to do so.

So really, Vandrad revealing himself when he did was… well, a blessing. Serilda had always felt sorrowful in the knowledge that Mythal had no family to be a part of his life. The only ones he’d ever had was her own family after they started becoming more serious with one another, and she knew that he loved and appreciated her relatives immensely, but they could never take the place of being his own immediate relatives. Vandrad was not his brother by blood, but that really didn’t matter. They were still family, and both of them were equally as invested and interested in solidifying themselves as such. It was a relief to Serilda, to see Mythal benefit from the comfort of having something that she had always taken for granted for herself. In that way, Vandrad was a bit of a godsend as far as she was concerned, which was part of why she was so eager to help him.

And helping him was what tonight was all about. Mythal and Serilda had contacted Gren fairly quickly to relay the news of Vandrad’s existence to him. Needless to say, the older man had been quite stunned, and a little upset to know that all this time he’d had another child and never known. That being said, he had taken the news fairly well and never once was apprehensive about wanting to meet the Bellum prince. The only thing was that he needed to work it out with his employers and get things put in place. It had already been a miracle for him to be able to get the clearance to spend time with Mythal again. Gren had to be very careful with where he went and who saw him, so for the most part their meet ups were almost always at Serilda’s house when the servants were gone. In fact, with everything between Gren and their current undercover investigation of the Magic Council, Serilda and Mythal had taken quite a number of steps to securing the privacy of their home and ensuring that they could not be eavesdropped upon in any manner.

So, that made their home the natural choice for today’s meeting. Serilda had sensed Vandrad and Mercury as soon as they got in the range of her Void sense and made sure the door was unlocked for them. The staff was already gone, and the girls were off visiting her parents for the weekend, leaving Mythal and Serilda with the full run of the house and only Victoria for company until everyone else arrived. The older woman wasn’t all that thrilled about being forced to partake in a family reunion, but there was little that could be done about it. Serilda trusted Gren significantly more at this point, but she still was nowhere close to trusting the people he worked for, and she had no desire for them to learn about Victoria and Lux any time soon. The less Gren knew, the less he would have to cover up for them.

“Hey!” Serilda called out in response to Mercury’s announcement, greeting them in kind. They found her in the kitchen checking on the status of the whole chicken that was almost done roasting in the oven. Her timer was set, but she had opened the door briefly to put a meat thermometer in the meat to see what the temperature was. Mercury proudly relayed that they had brought some dessert in the form of brownies, as well as who to thank on either end as to how they wound up tasting. Serilda laughed and shook her head a little, sending a little smirk their way even as she shut the oven door and adjusted the time a bit. “I’ll be sure to keep that in mind. Set them anywhere you like.”

Vandrad greeted her as she came around the island in the room to give the two of them a hug. “Quite well, actually. Mythal is feeling a little under the weather; just a cold. He’ll be down in a minute. But otherwise, everything’s been pretty great.” Indeed, she was smiling a little brighter and more freely than she usually did, giving Mercury an embrace and following it with one for Vandrad. As she pulled back, she took a moment to give his arms a quick squeeze and to lock their gazes together. The smile on her face grew and there was a knowing and open look of excitement in them as she casually nodded toward the dining table in the next room, directing his attention there. The table had already been set… but there were five place settings, not four.

Giving him a small wink, she turned and went back to working on the side dish she’d been making before checking on the meat. Mercury had already starting poking shamelessly through the kitchen to see what all the noblewoman had whipped up for the night, already stealing a breadstick from the basket Serilda had set them in. “I’ll have you know I arrest thieves for a living,” she informed Mercury with a playful smirk before relocating the basket so that it was in easier reach for everyone. She had always intended for them to be an appetizer anyway, and it wasn’t like she wasn’t already well aware of Mercury’s more pertinent mannerisms at this point. “What about the two of you? Anything exciting happen since we last saw you?”

Mythal couldn’t actually recall a day he was sick like this.

Sure, there had been plenty of times that he had been hungover. In his mind, those were the worst instances of being sick. The world feels impossibly loud and overbearing and his head would throb so heavily that he could barely even see straight. But as far as he understood, that wasn’t how normal instances of getting sick were, at least not in the mild cases. It involved getting the sniffles and sore throats and achiness; things that he’d never fully experienced or, if he had, he couldn’t recall. He’d never even really thought about it before either -- his life moved on its own path and so quickly that he rarely had time to consider the smaller things. Yet he had awakened feeling groggy, as if he hadn’t slept at all the night before. Slowly as the day continued on, his symptoms started to grow and grow. First it was a headache that started to get more and more annoying and then his throat started to dry out, leaving it raw and sore. He also felt slightly cold and hazy, pieces of his memory seemingly vanished without a trace. Serilda had assured him that this was what a common cold looked and felt like and the Darkness King had been surprised to realize that he’d never experienced it before.

And, of course, it came upon one of the worst days to get sick. It was a moment that he and Serilda had been waiting for over a long spanse of time. Ever since Vandrad had revealed his existence as the son of Gren, the pair had hoped and prayed they would be getting to this pivotal meeting. They had played it coy enough, wanting to ensure they didn’t put Gren’s safety at risk by acknowledging his resurrection. The reveal of his long-lost son had gone… well enough, for the most part. He was understandably upset, shaken that such a heavy responsibility had been ripped from his hands before he even got the chance to participate. While he relished the time he had gotten with Mythal, he still felt it was wrong to rob him of the chance to help raise his other son as well. The initial hit had been hard but slowly he accepted it, though there was never a question of how willing he was to meet the prince. He was thrilled over the idea, even if it was going to take some effort and time. He’d need to clear it with the organization he was with before he could commit.

In the meantime, it had become something of a habit to spend time with the Fairy Tail wizard and his female friend, Mercury. Though they had protested against any kind of romantic notion the first time they met, it was more than obvious that not only were they sleeping together but the feelings had started to develop as well. It was a story Mythal and Serilda knew all too well and, at this point, could recite the steps almost in their sleep. But it was best to let them figure that out on their own, leaving them to their excuses until it became time for the levy to break. So they continued to meet up for dinners, Vandrad seeking to get to know Mythal better and learning more about his prior family and the one he was marrying into. The prince was a stalwart kind of man, clearly brought up with the same royal mannerisms as Serilda. Mercury was more his speed -- a bit more on the normal, common side that was quick with a comment even if it wasn’t considered proper. Overall they were a delightful couple, which was about as strange as anything else in the world. Mercury and Vandrad weren’t exactly what one might call compatible -- they mixed about as well as beer and liquor in the wrong pattern. Yet somehow it worked, her quirks seeming to bounce off of his and reflect back without issue.

Even on his side with Serilda, it was a bit odd to suddenly have another couple to interact with. Nessa and Markus were always a good alternative to go and have dinner and drinks with but the schedules between the four never seemed to match up. At least Mythal was able to hear about Nessa through Vandrad, along with the rest of the state of the Fairy Tail guild. It had been some time since he had gone to visit and he had to admit, he kind of missed his old stomping grounds. But back to the point, Mythal was used to simply having Serilda around with Grappa and Jellisha. Any ‘free’ time was spent enjoying his family as fully as possible. So the sudden addition of other guests for dinner was strange, to say the least, but not unwelcome. It was quite the interesting parallel, listening to Vandrad talk about where he grew up and how his younger life had been. Mercury tended to deflect questions about her home, quick to make a joke or draw the attention back to someone else. She was hiding it for a reason but, whatever it was, it wasn’t his information to dig into. He was happy to get to know her and Vandrad both, especially now that it provided more family he hadn’t had before. Though they shared no blood, he honestly saw Vandrad as his brother.

He heard Mercury and Vandrad arrive, the boisterous Silver Wolf mage quick to make her presence known, as always. Mythal pushed himself up slowly from the bed he had been laying on, simply trying to allow himself time to rest and recuperate. Honestly, he didn’t feel all that better -- his world was still dim and his body felt weak and worn. Good chance he would be avoiding any and all alcohol with dinner. He hoisted himself to his feet slowly and took a moment to get his bearings. A soft whine caught his attention and he turned his gaze to the window, where Gren’s eye was looking in from outside. The Star Wolf had grown far too large to simply roam the house at the point, so while it was still warm, he rested out on the lawn right outside the master bedroom when they went to bed. Gren loved it -- sleeping on the grass filled him with such glee that he often fell asleep with a big grin on his face. “Yeah, I’m sure ya can feel how shitty I feel as well,” the Darkness King remarked with a soft laugh, waddling over to the window and leaning out. He rested his hand on the dog’s snout, giving it a couple of soft pats. “I’ll be fine. Just havin’ dinner and then I’ll pro’lly be back to sleep this off.”

He started to pull his hand away but Gren whined a bit louder and pushed himself against the palm, as if he was trying to keep him from leaving. It was an odd thing to happen -- usually Gren was so happy go lucky that nothing bothered him. But he seemed quite distressed. Then again, Mythal had never been sick before so this was probably a new and worrying development. “I promise, pal. I’ll be back in no time.” Another couple of pets were given to the massive Star Wolf before Mythal finally pulled back and started his trek downstairs. He could already hear the three of them talking in the kitchen as he rounded the staircase and headed through the door. “Hey guys,” Mythal greeted Mercury and Vandrad, giving them each a weak wave. “Sorry ‘bout this. Apparently whatever bug I got decided it wanted to hit full force today. Imagine that, right?” He tried to sniff at the air but found no aroma. Now his nostrils were blocked too? “I’m gonna sit down in the dinin’ room, if ya don’t mind. Room’s wobblin’ a bit for me.”

As he made his way there, Vandrad followed after him immediately, opting to join his adoptive brother. As the Darkness King sat himself down, sighing to be somewhere with a solid foundation, the prince sat down across from him. “So ya figure out what’s goin’ on yet? Ya got a glint in your eye that seems to say you already know what’s up.”

Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
    and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
Mercury caught Vandrad’s muttered retort, casting her trademark grin back at him even as Serilda chuckled and advised she would keep the instructions in mind. She set the plate down on a clear space on the counter before returning Serilda’s hug and trying not to snort at how awkward Vandrad was about doing the same thing. While the noblewoman informed them that Mythal was feeling under the weather, Mercury casually made her way over to be nosey about what Serilda had been putting together in the kitchen. The strong scent of chicken still wafted about the room, despite the oven door being closed, and it made her mouth water a bit. There was some sauteed vegetables, some kind of seasoned rice, a bowl of salad… “Ooo…” she cooed when her eyes lit on the breadsticks.

At this point, she was more than comfortable enough around the affianced couple to not hide her quirks, if only because she always got a kick out of whether or not Vandrad was going to try and chastise her for them. He had gotten much more laid back during their time as friends, but he was still a prince with that dignified noble upbringing, and she would never not get a kick out of watching him get flustered or exasperated by her blatantly unrefined habits. Serilda came back around and teasingly reminded her that she was a cop, drawing a grin out of the lavender haired mage. “And I steal things for science. ‘Science’ right now happens to be feeding the acid in my stomach to keep it from eating itself.” Serilda and Mythal both knew what Silver Wolf was about, so she saw no harm or astonishment out of the occasional honest joke about the fact that she probably was someone that the pair should be arresting. But, as long as they couldn’t peg anything specific on her, that wasn’t going to happen -- and overall, the two Rune Knights had been pretty forgiving of thefts of the Silver Wolf variety, since her guild really wasn’t a threat like the dark guilds were.

Taking a self satisfied bite out of the breadstick, Mercury got out of Serilda’s way in the kitchen and let the woman finish with what she was working on. “Nah, nothing too crazy. We passed the time today picking on some bandits that seemed to be under the impression they owned the road they were charging tolls on. We signed them up for a weekend getaway at your local outpost.” Mercury gave a devilish grin and chomped another bit out of the bread.

The actual truth was far toward the opposite, actually. Neither Mercury nor Vandrad had mentioned to the couple the real reason as to why they’d never successfully met up with them in the Unknown Lands. The change in Vandrad’s magic was not something that he wanted to be public knowledge, at least not until they could figure out what was going on and how to keep it controlled. So, she had tossed a quick text to Serilda that day after the fight with Louie giving some offhand excuse as to why they weren’t going to be able to make it, and had made it a point not to bring it up ever since.

Xiuhcoatl came trotting through the door to the backyard and quickly made an eager greeting to Vandrad and then to Mercury, who knelt down and gave the pup some attention. They had quickly determined during their first meetup with one another that Xiuh and Gren were sensitive to the same link that Mercury shared with the wolves on the Phoenix Mountains, as the spiritual connection spanned across the entire species. “Who’s a good girl?” she asked, vigorously rubbing both sides of Xiuh’s face as the wolf panted happily, her tongue lolling out of one side of her mouth in a goofy dog smile.

It was around that time that Mythal came down. Mercury’s sensors quickly picked up on the fever he was running and the irregularity of the rest of his vitals. He was clearly sick, as Serilda had said. “It’s alright,” she told him as he apologized for his current state. “Viruses don’t exactly give a shit about personal schedules. You try taking anything for it yet? I make healing mixtures and stuff on the side for Silver Wolf, so I could put something together for you if you like.” She’d have to figure out exactly what strain he’d caught first, but chances were she could easily craft something for him.

He went and took a seat in the dining room with Vandrad following him, leaving the two women in the kitchen on the other side of the threshold. Mercury mosied over to the fridge and pulled a beer out, already knowing from previous interactions that she was welcome to drink what she wanted of their stock. She popped the cap off without using a bottle opener and deposited it in the trash. Leaning up against the counter near Serilda, she decided to have her own conversation with the woman while the brothers did their own thing in the dining room. “So, is this really it?” she asked. “I know we’ve all been beating around the bush with this subject since we met but like… this is it, right? Please tell me it is, cause I’m far too curious and nosy of a person to keep up this thinly veiled charade of ignorance.”

She tried to make it sound like her main interest was just being a gossip, but the truth was that at this point she was so invested in Vandrad’s quest -- and in her friendship with Vandrad himself -- that she was almost more giddy than he was about all of this finally coming together. The prince had been calm all day and for a woman who never had any family to speak of, she couldn’t fathom being calm about that kind of thing. That went doubly for the fact that Vandrad was almost twice her age, and thus had been dealing with this kind of mystery far longer than she had. So, despite her tone, the look in her eyes was more than enough to convey how big of a deal this dinner was about to be, and how much she knew it would mean for Vandrad.

Vandrad was not a man that showed affection. What little endearment he did show, he did in such limited cases that only one person could truly track them -- Mercury. Somehow, she had been the focus of many sentimental moments, where his walls had come crashing down and his hard exterior had softened to let her in. But even then, those moments could be counted on one, perhaps two hands at best. And it was quite clear that a person like Vandrad did not go around giving hugs, the currency of the open and emotional. His family was all about physical touch and he was the polar opposite. He understood the reason to hug one another and he wasn’t against it in certain circumstances but he didn’t see a need to hug just for simply seeing someone. It was far too much physicality as far as he was concerned.

And yet Serilda persisted. It was about the only thing, outside of her occasional bouts of devilish humor, that went against her royal upbringing. It hadn’t taken very long for her to feel close enough to him and Mercury to start giving them hugs whenever they arrived and departed. Apparently that was some kind of friendly notion. The prince had attempted to mumble a ‘no thanks’ the first couple of times it had happened, simply desiring to remain untouched. But his words were always jumbled and so caught off guard that by the time he regained his ability to properly enunciate, he was already being hugged. After some time, he simply just let it happen. It seemed rude, considering all Serilda and Mythal had done for him and Mercury, to turn the gesture away. It was meant to be friendly so the least he could do was not put up a fight about it. But he was still rigid and barely reached up a hand to awkwardly pat her on the back until she had fully released him. "Ah, under the weather,” he remarked, an equally unorthodox response to being told someone was sick. Vandrad was truly a man of social ingenuity.

But what did catch his attention was how she paused after releasing him -- or rather, half-releasing him. She was smiling, which wasn’t beyond the norm, but it was brighter than usual. Full, excited and odd was the look from her, that was quickly followed by her taking both his arms and giving him a squeeze on each limb. She was uncharacteristically making sure his gaze was locked with hers and the prince couldn’t help the questioning look that passed over his face. Squeezing his arms, smiling brighter at him than usual. Oh gods, were Serilda and Mythal swingers? He was almost too afraid to look when she nodded towards the dining room, half expecting to find some kind of deviant display of tonight’s supposed events waiting for him. But there was nothing out of the ordinary other than the place settings for the five chairs and…

Five spots? He turned his attention back to Serilda, catching her odd wink before she pulled away from him and got back to work on dinner. Well, if that wasn’t confirmation enough, he wasn’t sure what was. The only other way he could conclude that Gren was coming was if either Mythal or Serilda just came right out and said it and, even then, hadn’t the Field Marshall done just that? He suddenly wished he had considered dressing a bit more formally. But he didn’t want to present himself as Prince Vandrad, did he? That was presumptuous and egotistical -- something  that useless sack of meat named Louie would probably do. No, his current attire was fine. After all, why shouldn’t he dress the way he did everyday? It would provide a sense of normalcy when they met, like he wasn’t expecting some big dramatic event or encounter or…

He realized that he was rambling in his head, his nervousness finally coming to boil within the confines of his head. Better inside than on the exterior, he supposed. He adjusted himself with a clearing of the throat and turned back as Serilda and Mercury passed a few playful remarks towards one another over the breadsticks in a food basket. The Field Marshall asked if anything exciting had happened since they last saw one another, possibly wanting to know more about what had deterred them in the Unknown Lands. Mercury played it off easily, focusing on their actions that same day rather than the one from a couple of weeks ago.

It was better that way. While Vandrad could safely say that he trusted both Mythal and Serilda, he wasn’t about to let anyone else know about his ineptitude in controlling his new ‘magic’ or whatever it was. Considering how destructive it could be, the last thing he wanted was to concern two Rune Knights in what could easily become a problematic issue. That and having Mercury know how little control he had was enough for him in terms of other people seeing how much he was at a loss. Luckily Mercury knew precisely when to tease him about certain subjects and when not to. She was welcome to harass him all she wanted in private about it but in public, it would be truly bothersome.

Xiuhcoatl, Serilda’s Star Wolf, came through the door as they talked, excited to see the other two wizards. She went to Mercury first for attention, getting her face rubbed on both sides as she happily smiled and let her tongue hang loose. Vandrad stepped in to give the hound a couple of pets almost absent-mindedly, delighting the Star Wolf with all the attention. The familiar presence of Mythal triggered his senses and the prince turned to face the rather sickly man. Unfortunately for the Darkness King, his infection was quite obvious; he was paler than usual and his eyes were sagged in a bit. He felt like death and Vandrad could sense it beneath the Director’s bold attempt to interact normally. He apologized for coming down with the sickness, to which Mercury offered to make something to help him feel better. He insisted that rest and water would be the perfect medicine. He insisted that he needed to take a seat to regain his strength and Vandrad opted to follow him, providing him company while he tried to relax.

The prince sat himself across from his adoptive brother, sliding into the seat and crossing his arms naturally. It didn’t take but a second for Mythal to bring up the obvious reason they had asked to have dinner, inquiring as to if Vandrad had an indication to the purpose. "If I wasn’t sure before, Serilda confirmed it fully a few moments ago,” he said, nodding back to the kitchen and then gesturing to the fifth place set at the table. "I can’t say I’m surprised that he’s alive and have confirmation of that now. That many witnesses and sightings would be hard to debunk. But to you and Serilda’s credits, you played coy well enough. Were I a simpler man, I might have believed you,” Vandrad said, flashing a humorous and prideful smirk.

The mood hung in the air for a moment longer before the prince spoke once more. "I appreciate that you’re both doing this. I understand that your speculation and secrecy had its reasons and I am humbled by your combined trusts in letting me in. I’m not used to… people caring about my goals, outside of my family in Bellum. And even then, I’m unlike the rest of my family members.” He was a lot more broken than the rest of them. But that was besides the point and Vandrad didn’t want to bring down the mood on a man that was already feeling under the weather. "In an attempt to lighten the mood and cheer you up, I’ll reveal to you that I wasn’t sure what to expect when I arrived. I presumed it was meeting Gren but… well, there was a small part of me that was wondering if…” Well this was embarrassing to reveal but he couldn’t just drop the point now that he’d brought it up. "I wasn’t sure if you and Serilda were getting to know us better in an attempt to… uh… invite us into your relationship for a night. Outrageous, right?”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Serilda was more than aware by now that Vandrad wasn’t the most touchy of people. And to be fair, she didn’t used to be, and arguably still was not to an extent. Her family had not been the most physically affectionate growing up, and that had never bothered her. But somehow over the last couple years, she’d become a bit more physical. It probably was in part due to her relationship with Mythal and the two of them finally settling in with their relationship to one another. But honestly the biggest reason was probably Grappa and Jellisha. Their unofficially adopted daughters were still quite young, and after everything she had gone through in not being able to have kids she couldn’t bring herself to not be overly grateful for the two that had been handed to her by fate. It had opened up a side of her that she had never known was there, and while it was strange it wasn’t unwelcome.

At least, not to her. Vandrad clearly wasn’t a fan, but Mercury had made it clear to her in private that Vandrad just wasn’t used to it and would figure it out at some point, and encouraged her to keep doing it anyway. Since Vandrad had never actually successfully asked her to stop, she’d just kept doing it, and while he still didn’t really return the gesture fully he didn’t fight it either. Granted, he looked like a deer in headlights when she took a moment to fully catch his attention, locking gazes with him and holding the touch a bit longer than usual. He seemed almost alarmed until he finally followed her gaze, almost reluctantly, toward the table. After a split second it processed in his head and he quickly looked back to her and the knowing look in her eyes as she winked at him. She would let Mythal get into the details of it all, but there was no sense in hiding anything now and she was far too excited on his behalf to make him wait any longer than he already had been for some kind of assurance.

In her typical manner, Mercury was very good at deflecting questions involving herself. Not that Serilda had necessarily been trying to pry about anything, but she did take note that neither of them had been very forthcoming with whatever had happened to them that day at the Unknown Lands. Frankly, Serilda just assumed at this point that they’d wound up hooking up out in the wilds. But apparently they had passed the time earlier that day playing around with a few bandits that were now being held at a Rune Knight outpost. “Oh, I’m sure they’re enjoying themselves, then,” she teased back lightly.

Xiuh strolled in and immediately began to demand attention, earning an amused eye roll from her mistress. Shortly after, Mythal finally joined them, likely having sensed that the guests had arrived. Or more likely, having heard Mercury when they showed up. The lavender haired woman offerent to provide him a tincture of some kind, which was politely refused. He just needed to rest, and it was just unfortunate that it happened to be on such an important day that could not be rescheduled. Not that he said that in as much detail, but he didn’t exactly need to at this point. Vandrad followed Mythal into the dining area while Mercury stuck around in the kitchen with Serilda, getting herself a beer before coming over to ask about the purpose of the evening.

Serilda couldn’t help the smile on her face. “This is really it,” she assured the younger woman gently. “It took some time to get everything together. I’m sure you’ll understand why in time. It’s not really our business to talk about. But ever since that first meeting, we’ve been doing everything we can to arrange it. We wanted to be more up front sooner, but… Unfortunately, a lot of things were not in our control.” She gave an apologetic shrug, still not wanting to say too much. Serilda wasn’t entirely sure what all Gren would and would not want to reveal. There was no harm in admitting that the man was clearly involved in something that required a great deal of secrecy, since that had been evidenced from the start by the way Mythal and Serilda had kept mum on the subject and by the fact that Gren was maintaining the cover of his death. But as far as what would be revealed to his blood son and the woman alongside him, well… that was entirely up to his father.

She could almost sense the emotion in the woman’s gaze, even if her mannerisms and tone didn’t betray that Mercury was more invested in all this than she let on. Serilda smiled at her. “Don’t worry. It’s going to be a good night. He was a little shaken when we told him, but he’s been eager to get to this night and greatly looking forward to meeting Vandrad. They should have plenty of time to figure out where they want to go from here, and I made sure to give the staff a couple days off so none of you would feel pressured to leave sooner than you want. Our guest rooms are open.”

“I appreciate the offer, Mercury, but I’ll be a’ight. I’ve been drinkin’ plenty of water and I’ll pro’lly go and lie down a little after dinner, just to get a quick jump on restin’.” The Darkness King kindly turned down the Silver Wolf mage. As sure as he was that some medicine may help, he really just wanted to sleep. His body was practically demanding that he go back upstairs and just close his eyes. But he refused -- he knew how important this night was and he wanted to make sure that he was there to support both Vandrad and Gren. It was going to be emotional, if his remeeting with his adoptive father was any example to follow. He just needed to take it easy as much as possible and that meant finding a place to sit sooner rather than later.

Sitting down had helped a little bit but also not very much. Having something solid underneath him provided Mythal with at least something stable to keep him up but already, having walked down the stairs, his body felt even more drained. His vision continued to deteriorate in small portions, a darkness creeping in on the edges of his eyeline. Maybe he should have stayed upstairs and rested until Gren was actually here and dinner was ready. He blinked away as much as he could to clear his vision as he turned his attention to Vandrad, deciding to ask outright if he knew what was going on. It seemed the prince had had an inkling before he arrived but Seri had given him enough clues to finalize his guess. He admitted that all of the evidence had well convinced him prior to even meeting Mythal and Serilda and he had simply gone along with the scheme for their’s and Gren’s sakes, teasing him over the depths of their deception. “Well we were a bit stunned, you appearin’ out of nowhere and all,” Mythal shot back, smirking weakly.

The Darkness Slayer took a moment to sigh softly and collect his senseless thoughts before Vandrad spoke up, his voice low and oddly sincere. He thanked Mythal and Serilda for their actions, knowing full well that they had kept their secrets for good reasons and appreciating that they had decided to trust him with the combined secret. He remarked that he wasn’t used to people aiding him with goals, though it seemed his family, the duWolffs, always supported him. But there were differences between him and them that were distinct and seemed to set him apart. Mythal nodded. “I never felt right anywhere. Considerin’ my past, it made sense and I kinda leaned into it, expectin’ the worse. But Gren took me in and taught me better, for as long as he could. I kinda lost sight of all that after he was gone and got a bit lost myself. I felt like I was alone in the world and I guess I was, though that was me makin’ it like that. When I eventually joined Fairy Tail, everythin’ changed. All that goodness came back and reminded me that it was there, buried beneath all the shit. Just hadta’ find it again.” Though he had a lot in common with Mercury in terms of personality, Mythal and Vandrad certainly shared a past that was damaged and painful. And it was that connection that kept them close, even in the short amount of time they had known one another.

Vandrad decided that he should lighten the mood, considering Mythal wasn’t feeling great. He explained that, while he had assumed the dinner was about Gren, he had been wondering about a second possibility that was apparently more far-fetched. The Darkness King knew this simply because Vandrad got a bit flustered and stumbled over his words, clearly regretting bringing the subject up but bulldozing through his issues over them. He revealed that he wasn’t entirely sure that Serilda and Mythal were simply spending time with him and Mercury for the sake of bringing them into the relationship. Mythal stared at the prince for a moment, his hazy mind trying to understand what that even meant. After a moment it clicked. “Oh,” he said softly as the buzzer rung. “Oh!” A second, more understanding exclamation as the words truly hit home. And then he started to laugh, the most energetic action he had taken all day. “Oh hell no. No offense to you or Mercury or nothin’ but we ain’t about that life. We’re perfectly satisfied with one anotha’ and don’t need to be addin’ third or fourths to the party. That is funny,” he calmed down, feeling more drained from the action but honestly, it was too amusing not to chuckle at. “And trust me, others have tried. There’s a woman at the Knights who is obsessed wit’ tryin’ to get in bed with both of us. Hell, goin’ even past that, has Seri told you about Ruzatz and Agatha? Well…”

Mythal started to explain about the odd friendship they had developed with the leaders of the Lusty Titans when his voice went hollow. The effects of his sickness were hitting him hard all of a sudden -- worse than they had before. He blinked slowly a few times, thinking his vision had faded from how exhausted his body was. It came back but it was hazy and blurry and his head was pounding like someone was hammering his skull directly. Worse yet, his chest felt tight and drawing in breath was becoming extremely difficult. “I uh…” he stuttered softly, putting his hands on the table to steady himself. Vandrad said something but he couldn’t understand it. Where the hell was he?

A sudden bright light appeared at the end of the table as a figure materialized out of thin air. Before the lightman could even take a step, Vandrad was there, grabbing him around the neck and lifting him up into the air. The prince demanded to know who they were and Mythal tried to make out who they were. But then a voice, clear as day, spoke up -- an all too familiar voice that had been gone for a long time.

“Let me go, you damn steroid juicing meathead!” Lux demanded. His hands were wrapped around Vandrad’s wrist, trying to pry the hand around his neck. The fact that the prince even had a grip on him at all was a question for later. “I’m Lux! His goddamn Seal! I am here to warn you! Where’s his chick, Serilda? SERILDA! SOMETHING IS HAPPENING TO MYTHAL. He’s under attack and it’s bad. It’s tearing him apart from the inside and it is fucking dark. Like even I can’t break it the way I am!” the Lightbringer yelled as loud as possible, turning his head slightly towards the kitchen.

As if that wasn’t enough trouble sparking up out of nowhere, the entire house suddenly shook as what sounded and felt like thunder exploded just above the roof. It was a familiar sound for the likes of Mythal and Serilda, who knew what Gren’s entrance sounded like but it clearly made Vandrad jump as he demanded to know who Lux had brought. “N-No, it’s G-Gr--” Mythal tried to explain but found his words lost again. Who was he trying to explain about again?

The front door burst open and revealed Gren, whose face was half-covered in blood. Walking right beside him was a shorter woman, dressed like she was some kind of lacrima-biker with the tattoos to match. “Mythal!” he called out as he came charging through the door, his voice wracked with concern and fear. He came around the corner to the dining room, his eyes widening as he met Mythal’s fading gaze. “No, it’s happening.”

"Heya folks uh… this is fuckin’ awkward but I’m Monica. I work with Gren and shit…” Monica gave a half-hearted greeting, her eyes scanning the faces in front of her.

Gren ran to Mythal’s side and took him by the shoulders, even as the Darkness King started to lean over and fall off the chair. “This is Faera. She’s performin’ some kind of ritual to get to him from the inside. We have to take him to the Order. They’ll have wards in place to slow the progress. If we don’t move now, we’re going to lose him in minutes.” Gren turned his gaze to Serilda. “I know you don’t trust ‘em but they have the means to save him, I just know they do. They have to.” It was clear that Gren didn’t really know if they did or not but he knew enough about them to assume they would find an answer.

"If we’re goin’ there, should we really be takin’ a full posse?” Monica asked Gren. "No offense guys, it’s just that the Order is super secret and all that and I don’t know if they’ll be too happy if we bring a bunch of strangers with us.”

“No, I…” Suddenly Gren remembered about Vandrad and pulled his gaze away from Mythal long enough to look up at the prince, realizing. He swallowed hard. “They all come. I’ll vouch for them.” Once more he turned his attention to Serilda. “We have to go now. Are you ready?”

Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
    and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
Serilda wasted no time in assuring her that this was, in fact, the day they had all been waiting for. As Mercury and Vandrad had assumed, the two Rune Knights had gotten to work almost immediately trying to get things going, but it had taken time and there was plenty going on that they had no control over. From the sound of things, Gren was wrapped up in some pretty deep undercover shit, and Mercury was just all the more curious now to know what was going on. Her nature was already nosy to begin with, but if it was something as intense as she was suspecting, it was probably stuff that she was going to have to collect information on for her own purposes. Not that she really wanted to. Mercury had been more and more reluctant to do her job as time went on, and she was sure it was going to bite her in the ass soon.

Apparently, she had shown more on her face than she’d meant to for one reason or another. Serilda told her not to worry and that everything would be fine. Gren had been taken back by the revelation, as Mercury was sure anyone would, but aside from that he’d expressed nothing but earnest interest in meeting his other son. Mythal and Serilda had taken every step possible to ensure the men would all have as much time as possible with one another, including making sure the house was free for them to stay as long as they wanted, even into the next day. “Thanks,” Mercury said with a small smile. “I’m sure it will mean a lot to him, even if he isn’t great at saying so.”

That was the last moment of peace they would have for the night.

The two women continued to chat idly in the kitchen when Mercury felt something manifesting with her magic. Her internal radars started screaming that something was brewing, as the waves of light in the air fluctuated almost violently right next to Mythal. She stopped mid sentence to turn toward the men, her fingers already reaching toward her gun. Then, all of a sudden, a whole ass man made entirely of light popped into existence in the room. Mercy was out and in her hand, trained on the man even as Vandrad slammed him up against a wall, both independent mages moving with the quickness and ease of trained soldiers. Serilda made a remark that Mercury didn’t quite catch, though it was clear she was trying to get Vandrad to stand down.

That didn’t stop the bright figure from railing into Vandrad before turning to scream for Serilda about Mythal. Mercury cast a glance at the man in question and sure enough he looked bad. Like he had already looked pretty awful when he’d come down, but even in the two minutes since then he looked a thousand times worse. His vital readings were off the charts and he could barely hold his head up.

If that wasn’t enough, a violent thunderclap practically shook the house, and Mercury immediately sensed two people out in the courtyard. Before anyone could stop her, Mercury slipped through the hallways and quickly made her way toward the foyer, hiding out of sight behind a wall until the two figures came bursting into the room. Not wanting them to get too close, she wasted no time in throwing herself around the corner with Mercy’s large barrel trained right on the two figures with unshaking calm, her emerald eyes dark and merciless on the two figures on the other side of the room…

And then in a split second it was all gone, replaced with recognition and confusion. Gren was there. He was unmistakable, even with a gaping wound on his face. He looked stressed, and not just from his own injury. Clearly, whatever was going on with Mythal, he knew more about it than any of the rest of them did. With him was an incredibly attractive woman whose body was covered in so many tattoos she had practically more ink than flesh. As soon as Mercury recognized Gren, she lowered her weapon and rushed back into the other room with them, staying back and out of the way as Gren hurried to Mythal’s side where Serilda already was, trying to get through to him.

Mercury could do little more than just stand there and watch, completely dumbfounded. What in the world was going on? Everything had been cool literally two seconds ago, and then all of the sudden all hell had broken loose. Now in full observation mode, Mercury stood silently by and took in everything around her, letting everyone else make a lot of noise while she soaked in information to try and keep up with it all. The tattoo’d woman introduced herself as Monica, a fact that Mercury tucked away for later, but there was so much going on that Mercury made no effort to really focus on it past that. By now, Serilda had already made sure that Vandrad was aware that Lux wasn’t a threat. The noblewoman was holding herself together fairly well, but there was no mistaking that she was extremely upset. It was like she and Gren were talking a completely different language that Mercury couldn’t speak. Who was Faera? Why was she performing a ritual on Mythal? What in the fuck was this “Order” Gren was talking about, that Serilda supposedly did not trust?

It was all questions she wasn’t going to get now. Gren made it clear that if they didn’t leave immediately, there was a high possibility Mythal wouldn’t be coming back from this. Serilda wasted no time in asking Mercury to turn off the oven. “On it,” she said, practically racing into the kitchen to turn the appliance off so that it wouldn’t set the house on fire while they were gone to… wherever they were about to go to. She kept her ears open to the conversation even as Monica expressed concerns over bringing everyone to the Order, which was apparently super secret and not entirely positive over the prospect of too many visitors. Fat chance she was going to have in convincing them to stand down, but thankfully Mercury herself wouldn’t have to say as much.

There was a moment where Gren spoke up but stopped himself. Mercury turned in time to see the older man locking gazes with his younger doppleganger, father and son coming face to the face for the first time. Gren advised that he was going to take them all, and whatever consequences came from it would fall on him. Leaving immediately was the bigger priority. Mercury hurried back into the room, her gun still in her hand but no longer being trained on anyone as she came up and stood beside Vandrad, close enough that he’d feel her standing there even if he didn’t turn to look at her. A million questions were racing through her head, but there was no sense in asking them now and drawing attention to herself. She’d get more if she continued to be an afterthought in the background.

Though frankly, she had a feeling that all those answers were just going to lead to even more questions...

    Something was wrong.

Though Vandrad didn’t want to say it outright, Mythal was looking worse and worse with every passing second. His eyes were glazing over, his skin was getting patchy and pale and the prince could see the sweat polluting the man’s forehead like the grass after a rainstorm. Going against his instinct, Vandrad opted to open up his empathic senses and get a feeling for what Mythal was feeling inside. And it was bad -- he was putting up a very brave front but he felt like utter trash and was having a hard time focusing on one emotion or thought at a time. It was like his entire spirit had been tossed into a blender and left there to spin in utter chaos. As much as Vandrad was still looking forward to seeing Gren, he couldn’t deny that it was probably not a good idea to keep Mythal up much longer. This minor cold was turning worse with every second he was awake and he needed rest bad.

Still, the Darkness Slayer managed to talk a little about his own past in correlation to Vandrad’s, clearly understanding the point of view that the prince took. Vandrad nodded softly, silently acknowledging that connection between them. After that, he decided to make the ridiculous confession about what other possibility he had wondered this night would bring, which earned him an odd look before Mythal put two and two together and began to laugh. He explained that he and Serilda were perfectly satisfied leaving their love lives between the two of them and no further than that. It was good to see the man laugh, though that seemed to sap even more of his energy. He went on to say that apparently others had tried to get in on the action, quoting a woman from the Rune Knights as one such party. While Vandrad wondered what kind of hell that would cause in the ranks of a military group, Mythal started to explain about two other people named Ruzatz and Agatha. But even as he started, the words dropped from him and into nothingness.

A far off look washed over Mythal’s face, as if his entire body had been turned off like a machine. Vandrad watched him carefully for a moment before leaning forward. This wasn’t something sleep was going to magically wash away. This was something far more serious. The Darkness Slayer tried to mutter something but it was quiet and almost unintelligible. Actually, it sounded more like… another language. "Mythal? What’s going on?” Vandrad asked, serious concern starting to replace any other emotion. Meeting Gren was now the farthest thing from his mind. Yet before he could move around the table to check the man’s vitals, he felt something. His senses went haywire, alerting him to some kind of presence materializing in the room.

The man made of light barely had time to take on a full form before Vandrad was up, the chair he had been in knocked to the floor. His hand opened and wrapped around the neck of the generating person and he slammed them up against the wall with enough force to shake the room but not damage anything else. A moment later, the finer features of the man defined themselves. He was a man, alright -- one that glowed like light and looked like a spirit. He felt like one as well but there was something off about him. Over his face seemed to be a mask, so tightly adhered to his skull that it was hard to see the lining where the mask began. He demanded to be let go, which caused Vandrad to snort. "Not on your life,” he growled.

But his grip on Lux loosened when Serilda spoke up, telling him to calm down. That didn’t stop the spirit from stating who he was and calling himself a… seal, whatever that was. He also said that he was there to warn them and he sought out Serilda, explaining that something was happening to Mythal. Apparently something was ravaging him from the inside out and it was, in Lux’s words, ‘dark’. That explained why his condition was worsening with every passing second. Vandrad had almost completely decided to let Lux go when there was a sudden and explosive bang from outside the house, near the front yard. His fingers pressed tighter into Lux’s neck. "Who the hell did you bring with you?!” he demanded from the Lightbringer.

Mercury bolted out to the hallway, looking to stop whatever was coming in its tracks. Vandrad held his ground, even as the doors were kicked down. A moment later a deep male voice called out for Mythal and was quickly followed by the emergence of what could only be called an older version of himself. Vandrad’s eyes widened in shock as he looked upon Gren, his father, the man he’d never gotten the chance to know and had been taken from him before he even knew he existed. Finally his grip on Lux loosened enough that the Seal was able to wriggle free, the spirit forgotten as Vandrad watched Gren cross over to Mythal and join Serilda in examining him. He was absolutely stunned, shaken to his very core in a way he hadn’t expected. He was trying to pull himself out of it, knowing full well that this moment was saved for figuring out what the hell was going on with Mythal but it still weighed heavily on his chest.

All it had taken was two minutes for this peaceful, exciting night to sour. Vandrad turned his gaze to look at  the other presence that had joined the fray, a short attractive woman with more tattoos than she had need for. She briefly introduced herself as Monica but the prince’s attention was taken once more to his adoptive brother as Gren spoke up. Apparently some ‘Faera’ was conducting a ritual to attack Mythal. The only answer was some kind of ‘Order’, who would have defensive spells in place to help the Darkness Slayer survive longer. Time was of the essence, which was a damn pain in the ass considering all the very confusing information that was being spewed out everywhere. Serilda understood and asked Mercury to go turn the oven off, set on leaving without causing further problems. Monica spoke up, asking if it was wise to take everyone present. She was concerned that, with the Order’s secret status, having strangers invited in would cause more problems than it would solve.

Before Gren could answer, their eyes met. It had finally registered to the former Knight that his son, his blood son, was there. Vandrad felt the world warp around him as he struggled to find something to metaphorically stand on. But that moment was gone as Gren stated simply that everyone was coming and that if it caused a problem, he would handle it. They were out of time to discuss and think it over and Gren made as much known. Vandrad opened his mouth to say something but had no words. A night he had looked forward to for so long was crumbling all around him and now, of all things, Mythal’s life was in danger. He swallowed the burning emotions down and set his gaze forward, the look of the stoic soldier he always kept on the face of things. "Enough talking then. Let’s get Mythal moving.”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Blissfully unaware of the details of the conversation currently transpiring between the brothers, particularly the admission Vandrad made of what he’d almost thought the night was going to be, Serilda was content to finish up in the kitchen and chat with Mercury for a time. Hearing Mythal laugh brought her attention to them briefly and she smiled, glad to hear him express some kind of joy when he’d been miserable all day long and getting seemingly worse with every passing minute. Even now he already looked all the more tired than he had a minute ago when he’d come downstairs. He would probably have to go to sleep again soon, which would be such a bummer… but his health had to come first, even though she knew he would stubbornly fight it for as long as he could.

While Serilda didn’t have a connection to light or to Lux in order to sense him with, she did have Victoria. The older Seal had been silent for most of the night so far, content to sit back and stay out of Serilda’s active thoughts. However, the noblewoman was keenly aware of Victoria’s emotional state and when the woman began to feel something Serilda sensed the concern in coming from her. What’s wrong? she asked.

    I think… I think it’s Lux.

No sooner had Victoria gotten the words out than Serilda’s house practically exploded into insanity. Lux practically came bursting into the room, his first appearance in months, and he looked visibly shaken in a way that struck Serilda straight to her core. Vandrad and Mercury both reacted so quickly that they must have sensed the Lightbringer before he’d finished manifesting, with the prince already somehow, miraculously, slamming him against the wall with full aggression and Mercury with her weapon in hand, trained directly on the Seal. “Wait, stop!” she called out, trying to get Vandrad to back off of Lux, who started yelling at his captor before screaming out for Serilda with a sense of urgency that she’d never heard from him before.

Something was happening to Mythal, something dark that not even Lux could break it apart, and it was coming at him from the inside. Serilda practically raced into the room, her heart pounding so loudly in her ears it was a wonder she could hear anything at all. Even worse, she looked at Mythal and he was so pale he almost looked dead, with sweat dripping down his face even as he started slouching in his char. “Mythal?!” she knelt down next to him and held him up, running a hand along his face to feel it burning beneath her touch. A familiar boom shook the house to announce the arrival of Gren, though it felt like someone else was with him. “Mercury, wait!” she cried out as the gun wielding Silver Wolf ace raced in the direction of the front door to confront the incoming pair, but the younger woman was already gone.

She would worry about it later. Mercury was smart and knew what Gren looked like, so she knew they would figure it out. The more pressing issue at the moment was the reappeared Seal.  “Vandrad, that’s Gren outside. Please, let him go. Lux, what else do you know? Please tell me it’s not what I think it is…” Lux was arguably the last person Serilda ever thought she would seek for reassurance, but somehow she got the feeling that the Seal of Light wasn’t going to be much of a pain in the ass right now. If something was happening to Mythal, then it was probably threatening Lux too, which is why he had suddenly reappeared after all this time.

By the time Gren got into the dining room, Serilda was holding herself together but it was clear to anyone paying even half attention that the only reason she was still as calm and in control as she was was because giving in to freaking out would greatly hinder her from being able to do anything about the present situation. When Gren walked in with his heavily tattooed companion, Serilda’s gaze went wide at the state of him. “Gren, what..?” He was sporting a nasty gash on his face that was still fresh like he’d only received it maybe minutes before, and there was a look of panic on his face that mirrored her own. He came over and immediately came to Mythal’s other side, stating that something was already happening.

“What’s going on?” Serilda asked him frantically, not even taking the time to register the strange woman’s introduction. Her focus was entirely on Gren and her quickly slipping fiance. The minute that her future father-in-law said Faera’s name, confirming Serilda’s worst fears, her entire body went cold. Not from her magic, just from shock and initial dread over forcing herself to accept the kind of trouble that Mythal was truly in. Gren claimed that Faera was performing a ritual of some kind in order to get to him from the inside, but if he could get them to the Order they could potentially slow the process down enough to figure out how to combat it. If they didn’t Mythal could be gone within minutes.

There was no way to properly describe the feeling that washed over Serilda at the confirmation that Mythal was in very real, very imminent danger. Her eyes were practically glued to Gren as she tried to process everything, so overwhelmed with emotion that she could barely show any. “I don’t care,” she told the man without hesitation when he acknowledged how little Serilda trusted the Order. “Mythal first, and I’ll deal with them later. Mercury, turn off the oven for me.” Somehow, despite everything going on, she had the wherewithal and level headedness to think ahead and ensure that a second problem didn’t rise up in their absence. The last thing she needed was the staff -- or worse, the girls -- coming home to a burnt up crisp.

She was already lifting Mythal up, using her magic to lighten his weight a little and supporting him with one of his arms around her shoulder, and one of her own arms around his waist. During that time, the new woman spoke up a bit warily about bringing so many people to the Order. “If they have a problem with it, then they can bring it up with me when we discuss the laundry list of grievances that I have with them,” Serilda practically snapped, her tone less in anger and more the stern confidence of a woman that had already made a decision and would brook no quarter to the contrary. She assumed this woman was one of their members, but wasn’t entirely certain of that fact. She’d never met Monica before and with nothing to illuminate that she was a member of Lusty Titans, it was the only conclusion she could make, but it was at the very least obvious that she wasn’t a person of any real authority in the Order. Thus, Serilda’s ire was not with her.

Thankfully, Gren spoke up in agreement, stating that he would vouch for everyone there. Serilda had not missed the moment of father and son laying eyes upon one another for the first time, but she was too caught up in her worry over Mythal to linger on the silent exchange for too long. As bad as she felt about it, there were currently more important things. Thankfully, Vandrad seemed to agree, advising that the time for talking was over and they needed to get moving, for Mythal’s sake. Serilda cast the man a grateful and apologetic look before resecuring her hold on Mythal and giving Gren a nod to indicate she was ready.

If Monica was offended by Serilda snapping in her general direction, she certainly showed no sign of it. Honestly, considering that a man was having some kind of magical attack in her dining room, she didn’t blame her for being short and sharp with her words. Besides, it wasn’t like the Order of Souls was her organization after all. If Gren was giving it the green light, then that was all that mattered. She was just doing what she could to offer insight. She gave a nod as she once again took a moment to scan the room. Seriously, what was with all these hot people in the same place? It wasn’t the right time to notice that, of course, but she really couldn’t help but notice just how attractive all the people were.

Though it didn’t fall on Vandrad to make the call, his quick words were the final ones spoken in the house on the subject. And in spite of himself, Gren was happy to see that his long-lost son was understanding enough to focus on the matter at hand rather than get upset over his night getting trampled on. “Alright, everyone try to stay calm. This is gonna feel a bit strange.” The former Knight summoned his magical power and extended it outwards, streaks of electricity darting around the room and running over the shoulders of everyone present. Once he was connected to everyone, Gren focused on the location of the hidden base and then, with a loud bang as thunderous as the one before, they were all pulled into the lightning bolt of Gren’s design and launched skyward. The room they were in would certainly need a bit of cleaning up once everything had been solved.

    If everything could be solved.

Inside the lightning bolt would certainly feel strange. It was a bit like being enclosed in a tight closet space, with a bunch of other people pressed against every side. It wasn’t necessarily uncomfortable but it wasn’t roomy and one would probably know the people around them a little better than before. But they wouldn’t be travelling for long; Gren had put all of his power into increasing his speed tenfold, the bolt streaking through the sky at such a high and violent rate that it ripped clouds apart. As it came over the Haunted Lands, it suddenly jerked downwards and smashed through the ground, burying itself deep into the soil. From there it exploded into a room of ancient stone, releasing all the members of the party and separating them back into the positions they had been before.

Gren fell to his knees, his magical energy drained practically to the drop. The room was a long, cubed space that was filled with texturized day-gray stone. An open doorway, nearly the size of the room itself, lay several yards in front of them, with two off-chute chambers ascending upwards in opposing directions. But the room they were in didn’t seem to have anything special about it. Still, Gren threw his hands up, palms facing away from his body. A small trinket hung between his thumb and index finger on his right hand, a chain link necklace almost. “Do not harm these people, they are here with my permission and upon my wishes. Please.” He called out loudly, his voice cracking with urgency and fear.

It didn’t seem he was talking to anyone in particular. And even all the magic users that specialized in being able to sense bodies or presences would find their abilities quiet, telling them that the room was empty minus the party. Yet Gren was on edge for a few seconds more, his eyes snapping back and forth through the room. After a tense period of time, he released a sigh of relief and dropped his hands. “Please, we need to get my son help. Faera is making her move -- she’s attacking him as we speak.”

Even as he pleaded for assistance, there was no movement within the room. The only indication that anything was happening was that Gren’s head drooped a little, though that may have been exhaustion more than anything else. He turned to look at Mythal, who miraculously looked slightly better than he had only minutes ago. There was a bit of color in his cheeks and the sweat on his brow had lessened substantially. He still looked sick but it was as if he had been given a brief remedy for his symptoms. He showed this by opening his eyes again, blinking wearily. “Where… where are we?” he asked, wincing as he tried to move but found his body slow and heavy. At least his mind felt a bit clearer for the moment. He looked around the room carefully, taking in the faces of the party that had come with him.

Before Gren could offer an explanation, the back wall of the doorway shifted. A single panel of stone shuddered and then began to rise up into the ceiling, revealing a hidden path behind it. Through it walked a woman of unexplainable beauty, her skin dark, rich and vibrant. Upon her head was a crown of sorts; a piece embedded with jewels and diamonds all along the forehead of the garment. On either side, jutting out, were two horn shaped growths, painting her in the image of a woman with bull horns. She wore an elegant robe of white and black stripes, with a wide white collar blooming from her neck and shoulders. It was of silken make, highlighted by black edges all along the top. The robes ran down the length of her body and opened up around her pelvis, revealing long and tight black leggings beneath the hem of the skirt. A gold belt wrapped around her waist, complemented by black boots with golden caps over the knees. Her chocolate eyes looked between the members of the arrived party carefully before resting upon Mythal.

A group of robed men and women moved behind her, members of the Order that looked more like scientists than soldiers. They flanked her on either side, awaiting their orders as they marched into the room. “We need to get Director Ragnos into one of our healing chambers right away. Do we have your permission to take him? My people can help stabilize him on the way,” the woman spoke quickly and sincerely, looking for acknowledgement from Serilda, most of all. Once she had given her permission, she would turn and casually nod to the doctors behind her. They would rush forward to Mythal, their magic activating instantly as they came on either side of Mythal.

Another doctor woman would walk in late from behind the elegant woman, though she certainly didn’t look the part. The only thing that distinguished her as any kind of medical professional was the robe she wore and, even then, it looked more like a leisurely robe one might wear around the house, with its purple fur lining the bottom and collar. She had green hair that draped down just above her neck, perfectly cut all around her head. Her thick bangs covered her forehead as they framed her studious and neutral face. A chain collar wrapped around her neck and, from there, golden chains filtered down under her shoulders and disappeared into her robe. She wore a top that was… almost a bathing suit top but it didn’t quite cover the entirety of her robust chest and frankly, figuring out what kept the outfit on would require study in and of itself. The only other article of clothing she wore, besides the strapped sandals on her feet, was a pair of what looked like swimming bottoms, thin and wrapped tight on her hips. Two cross-like figures stuck out from her hair, embellishments to an already odd-looking woman.

“Director Ragnos, I’m Dr. Wanda. I understand you’re suffering from a magical attack. Please remain calm,” she said smoothly, bending down to one knee so she was on level with Mythal. The Darkness King blinked as he looked at all the doctors surrounding him, his eyes settling on Doctor Wanda. “This is going to tingle a little. In a few moments, your vitals should stabilize enough that you’re not in pain.” The doctor reached out and pressed her hand against Mythal’s wrist, her fingers gently depressing his skin. Magic flowed through his veins, a warm feeling that was quickly followed a cold, tingling sensation -- just as she said. With her other hand, Doctor Wanda created a magical gurney, constructed completely of green ethernano. “We’re going to move you now. No need to panic.” She nodded to the other doctors and, together, they eased him onto the gurney.

“Let’s get him to the healing chamber immediately.” the other woman told Doctor Wanda, earning her a nod. “Follow me, please.” she asked the rest of the party, as the group of doctors escorted Mythal through the doorway and down the hallway. The dark woman led the group right behind them, her boots clicking loudly down the length of the passage. “We’ll answer the many questions you have once we have Mythal stabilized. Saving is life takes precedence over curiosity,” the woman explained to the group, her voice calm despite the situation. She understood there was a lot to question but considering the situation, playing twenty questions was far from the highest priority. She turned enough to look at Gren, a visible sign of concern flashing over her features. “Gren, what happened to your face?”

“Ah, one of the Sons got a lucky shot in,” Gren said.

"More like they almost cut his fucking face right off,” Monica clarified.

“Then you will require healing as well.”

“Please, Queen Zifu, focus on Mythal. I don’t--” Gren started to protest.

“Agent Ragnos, we have more than enough healing specialists here to tend to both Director Ragnos and yourself. We are perfectly capable of taking care of your son and you as well. You know what the Master says -- we do not trade lives, we save them.” Zifu spoke to Gren with the authority that came with the title of queen. Her words, while stern, were considerate to the man’s emotional plight but unbending in their resolve.

Gren’s protests came to a quick stop. “Yes ma’am.” And that was the end of that.

They turned down another hallway. As they continued to walk, Zifu turned her left arm over and revealed a small, iron wristband. She pressed her finger against it and a small green light lit up. “Darling, I’m sure you’ve heard the alarms by now.”

No answer. Absolute silence. Then Zifu spoke again. “Yes, Faera has made a move on Mythal. We have him here now, along with Lady Sinclair, Vandrad Ragnos and Mercury Arseneault. They were present when the attack began.”

Once more there was silence, as the communication continued through unseen means. “Understood. We’ll see you shortly.” She then pulled her hand away. “The Master of the Order will be joining us. This isn’t exactly how he wished to reintroduce himself to Mythal but it seems matters have been taken from our hands.”

They turned into a laboratory, carved out of the stonework with sleek, polished panels of granite. Magical equipment lined the room on every side and a single bed lay in the center of the room. This is where Mythal was brought to, the doctors helping him to slide over onto the thin but oddly comfortable set of pillows. Once there, the doctors spread out to the different machines and began running diagnostics. Doctor Wanda remained at Mythal’s side. “Director, we’re going to need to remove your shirt so that we can attach these nodes. They’ll help give us an accurate reading of your magical signature as well as your vitals,” she explained, holding up the small sticky circles.

“Uh… sure,” Mythal said, glancing around. Now that they had his permission, one of the other male doctors came over and pressed his hand against the Darkness King’s chest. He pulled the hand back after a moment and quite literally phased the shirt off of Mythal and into his hand. He took it off to the side and hung it up on a hanger on one of the far walls. Doctor Wanda started placing the nodes on his chest as the Darkness Slayer looked around still. This was honestly more confusing than the attack he had just been going through. But frankly, whatever magic this Wanda used had worked. His vision was practically back to perfect and his head wasn’t throbbing as much. He still felt heavy but that was nothing compared to having his head in a vice. If anything, he was just tired and wanted to sleep now.

“How is he?” a new masculine voice came from the doorway. Should anyone turn to look, they would find themselves staring at a tall, muscular man who looked a bit roughed up, with some bruises adorning his body. He looked about as chiseled as Vandrad was but easily stood at six and a half feet tall. Short, spiky blond hair covered his head and as he got closer, a noticeable scar over his left eye became more obvious, though that barely took away from the piercing teal eyes he possessed. He walked right up to Mythal and, despite the situation, he smiled. “Hello old friend. It’s been a couple of years.”

Mythal was stunned. The face had aged after nearly twenty years and he was larger in all aspects but the Darkness King saw a familiar face. One he had nearly forgotten about after all this time.

    “Chishan?”

    Mercury Banner
Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
    and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
This was actual insanity, and coming from a woman who had spent her entire life in an active warzone, that was saying a lot.

Mercury was greatly on edge, more than her face was necessarily letting on. She had been on the verge of another episode much like the one she’d almost had in Bellum at the after party when Bartrand had first popped loudly into existence beside her. The Xocili was unusually silent with everything going on around her, her grip on Mercy tight and unrelenting, unable to bring herself to put the weapon away even after she’d figured out that, at the very least, everyone present in the room was known or at least not questioned by Mythal or Serilda. The spot she had taken standing beside Vandrad had also rather advantageously set her up where she could see everyone else in the room clearly, with a wall to her back, and her emotional state was heavily fighting itself down from succumbing to the kind of relived trauma that only a soldier would be able to recognize.

Serilda snapped a response that basically amounted to her expressing a complete lack of fucks as to whatever this “Order” would be happy with, which only made Mercury feel even more disjointed. She liked Serilda and Mythal well enough, and trusted them to a point with very specific and shallow things, but right now she was in a room with far too many strangers for her to feel anything but being backed in a corner. Vandrad was the only person here she trusted completely, so she was content to follow his lead for now, but she was one wrong move away from locking down into full survival mode and her friend would probably be able to sense that from her.

The decision had been made and it was time to go. Gren gave them warning in advance that whatever magic he was about to use to transport them was probably going to feel weird, and Mercury braced herself as best as she could for exposure to something she’d never experienced before. She had teleported through the use of Mythal and Serilda’s magics in the past, but that had been more like walking through a doorway than anything else. This felt completely different, like she was being sucked up through a thin straw that spanned the length of the continent. Though, given the nature of Gren’s magic, it was surprisingly invigorating for her more than it would be for everyone else present. The lightning danced along her flesh for only a moment before they arrived at their destination, but her boots hit the ground and she was even more alert and energized than she already had been.

The opposite seemed to be true of Gren, who immediately collapsed to the floor with exhaustion as though transporting everyone had drained the last reserves of his energy. And to his credit, she didn’t blame him. He’d clearly already been in a fight before finding them, and moving so many people at once likely hadn’t been easy, especially given how far they had gone. He may have moved the speed of light to get them there, but Mercury’s computer brain had not missed a thing during the journey, even if it took a second or two longer to process than she normally needed. Her sensors were already providing her coordinates that revealed they were underground and quite a long ways away from Era, in an area she’d never been to before. They were far from any civilized town or structure of note, or at least anything that could be found on a map.

Gren spoke up to seemingly no one, his voice reverberating off the walls in the long, empty room. He held a trinket of some kind in his hand that Mercury examined closely from where she stood, her eyes quite literally zooming in on it to inspect its shape and make. Despite the fact that all of her sensors indicated there was no one else in the room besides the members of their group, Gren was looking around like he could see whatever people he was talking to, which only heightened Mercury’s sense of panic. She did not like the feeling of being watched by people she could not confirm were there. She had such little control over everything going on, and it was quickly compounding on her in an unhealthy way. Stress that she hadn’t felt in quite some time after becoming so comfortable on Earthland and around Vandrad came swimming violently back up to the surface of her mind, and it was only decades worth of living in near constant stress that kept her looking leagues more calm than she actually was. Anyone looking at her would probably see a reasonable and expected amount of confusion and trepidation on her face in light of the current goings on, but chances were only Vandrad would be able to recognize how shaken she truly was.

Her eyes snapped to Mythal when he spoke up, both sounding and looking a bit better already just by being wherever they were. That would have calmed her down a bit if it weren’t for the fact that the room was suddenly flooded with yet more strangers, including a regal woman with dark skin and a commanding presence that did little to quell Mercury’s sense of danger. There was a tense moment as that woman and Serilda locked eye contact, the former patient to the latter’s defiant. For a moment, Mercury thought Serilda was going to refuse and insist that she continue to carry Mythal herself, but the noblewoman cast a glance to Gren as if looking for confirmation from him that Mythal truly would be okay in their hands, before ultimately relinquishing him into their care.

After that, all that was left to do was follow the crowd, an act that Mercury wasn’t altogether pleased about but she went along with it without complaint, or really doing much of anything that would draw attention to her outside of making it a point to finally put her gun away. She listened intently to everything that was going on around her, taking in as much information as possible even as she ran searches in her head trying to figure out what she could find on everyone in the room. She was not, by any means, happy to hear that this Zifu woman knew her own name already, and a spike of anger glimmered through all the other emotions that she was already keeping locked beneath the surface. What else did they know about her? She needed to find out, and quickly.

Mythal was placed on a gurney and they eventually found themselves in a lab of some sort. Mercury was quick to look around and take in every detail, including how advanced the tech in the room was. It still wasn’t quite on par with the kind of stuff her people were capable of, but it was easily the best she’d seen on Earthland yet. It should have comforted her for Mythal’s sake, but it didn’t. Whoever these people are, they were clearly professionals at what they did, and since Mercury still had no idea exactly what it was that they did, she still felt fairly cornered. Another man joined them eventually, a tall man with about as much bulk as Vandrad, with blonde hair and a scar across one of his eyes. Like everyone else that entered her life in the last five minutes, he was extremely attractive. Unfortunately, Mercury wasn’t quite in the mindset at the moment to appreciate any of that, so she merely continued to hang back and observe in silence, letting everyone else in the room take the spotlight so she could take everything in without distraction.

Vandrad had been struck by lightning magic before -- several times, in fact, over the course of his life. But this was one of the rare times he could say that electricity had flowed over his body without causing any kind of injury or shock. If anything it kind of tickled. But in an instant, he was pulled up into the bolt with the rest of the group, tightly enclosed among people that he couldn’t see but could certainly feel. And then in the span of a few seconds, it was over. He was standing on his own again, Mercury right over his shoulder, and everyone else almost exactly where they had been in Serilda and Mythal’s home. Only this time they had somehow come to an underground cave, carved into flat stone but lacking any real design and flourish. Gren fell to the ground almost instantly, his body washed clean of his magic from so much heavy use. The prince started to step forward but stopped himself, unsure of what he would even do or say. Instead he focused on shaking off the feeling of anxiety that was attempting to wash over him.

But it wasn’t just his own nerves he felt. He cocked his head slightly as he realized that not only was he reading most of the people in the enclosed space but he could sense Mercury. Her emotions were a wildfire beneath the stalwart facade she kept up, watching carefully while flip-flopping inside. She was always quick and formative with her defense, wanting to look calm and measured especially when she wasn’t. While she looked about as confused as the rest of everyone, there was a brewing worry beneath the surface. He highly doubted it had anything to do with concern over Mythal, though perhaps that was part of it. Before he could react to it, Gren spoke up to the empty room, asking that the group wasn’t targeted. That was a great first sign -- the prince did his best not to immediately get on guard. He explained that Mythal needed help and that name, Faera came back up again. After a moment, his father let his guard down, breathing a sigh of relief. It was after that Mythal spoke up again, sounding a bit more focused. He even looked a bit better. Gren had been right -- whatever enchantments were set in the cave were having a positive reaction.

The back wall of the room opened up, revealing a dark skinned woman who walked with a regal gait. Vandrad studied her carefully as she came forward, a flock of scientist-looking people on either side of her. She asked permission to take care of Mythal and honestly, it seemed like she was going to have a fight on her hand. Understandably, Serilda was unwilling to let anyone else take her fiance but after a moment of consideration -- and looking to Gren for security -- she obliged and allowed the scientists to work. They spoke to the Darkness Slayer in short, quick sentences, orating to him what they were doing so that he and everyone else could hear and understand. Once the lead doctor had summoned a gurney and they had placed Mythal on it, the regal woman suggested they follow after. Without much else to do, the group started after her and Mythal.

As they walked, the woman talked with Gren, informing him that he was to receive medical treatment for his injury. He tried to protest but she, apparently named Queen Zifu, was having none of it. Vandrad’s eyes narrowed in familiarity -- there was something about that name that struck a chord. He couldn’t quite recall what it was but he knew he had heard it before. She seemed to know who he and Mercury were as well, a factor that seemed to further upset the Silver Wolf mage. Swallowing his pride momentarily, he reached out and took her hand in his, holding it tight. It was about the largest gesture he could make and arguably one that he wouldn’t normally do, considering the circumstances. If Vandrad hated hugging other people, he absolutely loathed the idea of public displays of affection that went even beyond that. He’d been comfortable enough to hold her hand in Bellum, as he was with his family and even then he’d done so almost subconsciously. Here, in front of people he only knew a little mixed in with complete strangers, he didn’t want to put anything forward to them. But she needed some kind of solid foundation to rely on; while she wasn’t drowning in her inner emotions, she was swirling around a bit wildly. The gesture, while small, would hopefully help stabilize her and remind her that he was there too.

Zifu talked with someone on a communicator around her wrist and when she got off of the telepathic call, she explained that the ‘Master of the Order’ would be joining them in the room shortly. From there they moved into a chamber filled with medical equipment. They set Mythal down on a bed and prepared him for their tests and diagnostics. Vandrad took a place near Mercury, his arms crossing over themselves in his natural state of watching. It wasn’t long before another man had joined, looking like he had just come back from a battle himself. He was a tall man, with piled on muscle much like himself. A warrior no doubt. He walked up to Mythal and greeted him as a friend and it seemed the Darkness Slayer recognized him as well, calling him by the name of Chishan.

"If we’re done socializing, I think we’d all like to know what the hell is going on with Mythal,” Vandrad suddenly spoke up, trying his best not to scowl too hard. Preparing everything was one thing but casually reminiscing about the past was ridiculous given the situation. "And while we’re at it, what is this place? Who are you people, you ones that my f-... that Gren keeps addressing as the Order? In my experience, people create underground, secret bases when they are trying to hide something. So you can understand why I’m unwilling to believe you have beneficial intentions.”

“Vandrad,” Gren spoke up from the other side of the room. He was sitting on a small table and one of the doctors was tending to his injury, having already cleaned up the blood. But the former Knight was looking at his son, still weary but equally as concerned. “Please…”

Vandrad held his father’s gaze for a few moments longer before he snorted. "Tsk,” he exhaled in annoyance. "From what I’ve gathered, Serilda doesn’t trust you worth a damn. So I want to know why we’re suddenly leaving Mythal’s life in their hands. Who are you, really?”

    Seri Banner
Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Serilda had travelled great distances in a number of ways this past, but this was certainly different. It wasn’t often that the Voidwalker was made to feel a bit claustrophobic given that she could always phase through solid objects around her. Now, she felt like she was being pressed against on all sides while her body was lit up with electric currents that somehow didn’t injure her. Within mere seconds, they found themselves in an underground cave consisting of an ambiguous grey colored stone. Serilda could not sense anyone either inside or outside of the room. In fact, she couldn’t sense anything at all outside the room, which was uncomfortable.

That discomfort only grew as Gren, who had fallen to his knees for lack of energy, pulled out a totem and asked the open air to stand down and not attack, relaying that everyone present was with him. Serilda’s eyes narrowed as she glanced about the room with a surprisingly calm and collected, if suspicious, look. She held Mythal a little tighter to herself, getting her magic ready in case she needed to quickly protect everyone present. An organization like this most likely packed quite a defensive force, and she was not willing to let anything happen to anyone present. Eventually Gren sighed in relief, despite the room seemingly being empty, and requested aid for Mythal after advising the man was being invaded by Faera.

It was Mythal’s voice that finally drew Serilda’s gaze away. She turned her head to look at him as he asked where they were. Already he was looking better, which was enough to send a small wave of relief for her, though not enough to make her relax. “Your dad took us to the Order,” she told him, her voice gentle and soothing so as not to freak him out or shout in his ear. Still, he deserved to know the truth and she wasn’t sure how much he had or had not retained after being overwhelmed. “Faera is trying to do something to you from the inside. Lux said there’s a darkness building up in you, and tearing you apart. Gren says they can help.” So far that seemed to be true, though how long that held up and what kind of strings came attached to it remained to be seen.

Around that time a wall opened up to reveal a number of individuals that appeared to be doctors, though they were not the ones who caught her attention the most. A woman dressed very much like a queen with rich black skin and a calm, commanding demeanor much like her own lead them. Serilda’s cold blue eyes locked onto her immediately, and while she still kept her face as controlled as she ever did, there likely was no mistaking that she wasn’t exactly thrilled to be in present company. The woman stated that they needed to get Mythal to a healing room, and asked Serilda for permission for her people to take him.

The princess’ blue eyes narrowed ever so slightly, her instinctive reaction somewhere along the lines of informing them she was more likely to hug Ozorith than relinquish Mythal to these people that had been invading their privacy for so long. However, her discipline and better sense won out in the end and she kept such comments to herself. She looked toward Gren then, her gaze searching him in a silent question of making sure that he truly believed these people could help and that he had no reservations in trusting them with his son’s care. Gren was the only person she had to rely on here when it came to making an informed decision here, and while she had more than a few reservations about the people he worked with, he had come a long way in bettering himself on a personal level with her.

Presuming he gave her some kind of indication that it was alright, she flicked her cool gaze back to the woman before her. “You may take him.” Serilda did not feel the need to follow up with the demand that she be able to go with them, as she was fairly certain it was clear from her body language that she wasn’t about to let Mythal out of her sight. At the dark woman’s nod, the doctors rushed forward, including one that was dressed far too promiscuously to be respectable. She introduced herself as Wanda and gave a brief recap of what was going on and what she was going to do to help him. She touched his wrist and Serilda could practically feel his tense body relax a bit in her hold on him. Letting the doctors lift him away from her and onto a gurney, Serilda watched the entire process like a hawk until he was settled, her stern expression not lifting even once.

Everyone went on the move right away at the dark woman’s behest, and without Mythal to carry any longer Serilda settled right into the habit of her royal upbringing and military training, standing tall and straight with her hands clasped coolly and loosely behind her back. She was barely a step behind the gurney and the personnel that controlled it, giving them enough space to not be in their way but also not letting anyone get too far ahead of her with him. The woman in charge advised that they would allow a time for questions to be answered once Mythal was seen to. “Agreed,” Serilda advised, of the same notion that Mythal’s state was currently more pressing than the many questions and comments she had brewing in her mind over the last several months.

A short conversation passed then between the woman and Gren as they addressed his own injury, with the younger woman that had been with Mythal’s father adding in her own… colorful take on what had gone down. He addressed the regal looking woman as a queen known as Zifu, causing the Voidwalker’s gaze to narrow again. There was an extreme amount of doubt in her mind that this woman was actually a queen, or if she was it wasn’t of any nation that Serilda knew of or recognized. She was fairly well versed in the royal families of Ishgar and its closets continents, given that her family was one tragic accident away from being next in line for the Fioren throne. However, Serilda was never one to speak impulsively, so she elected to wait and find out more before being disrespectful.

Gren attempted to insist on focusing their medics on Mythal, but Zifu was quick to shut the notion down, reminding the man that they had more than enough people to help both men. Serilda had to admit that Zifu did at least have the grace and command of a seasoned queen, that much she couldn’t deny, though she resisted the urge to snort or roll her eyes at the platitude about saving lives. It was a good stance to have, and one that Serilda very much agreed with, but she was far too suspicious of everyone in this place to be placated by pretty words. Still, it was enough to more or less cow Gren, who stopped fighting and accepted the decision.

Serilda was silent much like everyone else as they walked, taking a moment to keep note of the people there, the halls they walked, and everything else she could observe. Zifu spoke into a communicator advising someone that she could only assume was her spouse by the way she referred to them as “darling”. She confirmed who they were with, what was happening, and where they were going, and by the time the call ended they were informed that the apparent Master of the Order would be joining them. Interesting that she did not refer to him as anything along the lines of a King. Perhaps they weren’t married, but then where did that put Zifu in all of this? If the Order was not a Kingdom, that much she could assume from what little they had gleaned from Gren since his return. So why was there a queen involved to the point of personally addressing the situation?

Yet more questions, but it was not yet the appropriate time to ask them. They had arrived in a state of the art facility where the doctors took Gren aside to start working on him even as they got started in more depth with Mythal. With the darkness slayer’s permission, they magically removed his shirt and began to attach a device to him that would read his magical and organic vitals. Serilda stood nearby the entire time, still sure to not be in the way, but watching the process intently. In fact, she didn’t look away until a new voice spoke up, drawing her attention to the man that approached.

He was quite large, with as much muscled bulk to his frame as Vandrad except that he was much taller than the prince. He had bright blonde hair and an unfortunate scar over one of his eyes and down his cheek, though that didn’t make him any less attractive -- a note that Serilda made but did not care to linger on. Her eyes were as locked on him as they had been upon Zifu before, composed and controlled but no less hard.

In fact, the only thing that caused any flux in her expression was when he referred to Mythal as an old friend. Serilda’s brows furrowed in slight confusion even as Mythal spoke his name: Chishan. So they actually knew one another, did they? Well, that was… frankly, she didn’t know what to make of that. Mythal had never mentioned this man before, either by name or description, but given that the Rune Knight wasn’t denying the past history, nor its good terms, that at least was enough for Serilda to feel less threatened by the man.

She was considering whether or not to speak when Vandrad beat her to the punch, remarking in no nice terms that it wasn’t exactly the time for a reunion chat. He demanded that the focus remain on Mythal and figuring out what was wrong with him, a notion that Serilda very much agreed with for the time being. But, her future brother-in-law’s thoughts didn’t end there. He voiced a number of more questions, pretty much all of which Serilda wished answers to herself. It was Gren that spoke up, softly pleading with his long lost son to exert a little patience with everything going on. It was a telling moment as Vandrad elected to take the unspoken advice, even if it drew an annoyed sigh from him.

Instead, he simply voiced his observation that Serilda clearly didn’t trust the Order, and as such he wanted to know why Mythal’s care was being placed in their hands, and to know who they really were. Serilda looked to her fiance, sharing a glance with him. They had not told Vandrad or Mercury about most of the details of Mythal’s past, as it wasn’t exactly the kind of thing the darkness slayer liked talking about. They were private people, and the subject itself was rather sensitive. But, it looked like they were no longer going to be able to avoid it. Vandrad and Mercury were here and involved, now… for better or worse.

Waiting until she was sure that Mythal understood the look in her eyes that betrayed she was about to open up a bit about the truth, she finally sighed, the single soft gesture drawing all attention in the room to her. “I don’t trust them,” she finally said, turning her gaze slowly to meet Chishan’s and then Zifu’s before finally settling on Vandrad, though her expression was kinder on the prince than the first two. “But I do trust Gren. And unfortunately, what’s going on with Mythal… there are very few people that have the resources and knowledge to help him.”

With one last glance to Mythal for assurance that he was fine for the time being, she turned her body fully to face Vandrad and Mercury. “Mythal was born from a ritual involving an archangel and a human, born for the purpose of becoming a host for a goddess of darkness named Faera. Faera is one of the supreme deities of the cosmos, known as a Divine, who wants to expand her kingdom by invading Earthland and absorbing it into her domain, Kingdom Darkness. Unfortunately for her, Gren and the Rune Knights interrupted the ritual after Mythal’s birth that would have allowed her to take his body… but that hasn’t stopped her from continuing her assaults on him on and off over the years ever since.”

It was the short and skinny of the situation, certainly lacking in the bulk of detail but enough to give the prince and his counterpart a foundation to work off of as the other details came into play. With any luck, it was enough information to appease him for the moment. He would surely have more questions, but it should be more than enough to reveal to him the gravity of the kind of situation they were dealing with, as well as why Serilda was risking working with people she did not trust. There were very, very few people that could offer real resources in a situation like this, and as such she had very little choice in the matter. All she could do was rely on Gren’s discretion, knowing that at the end of the day the health and wellbeing of his son, both of his sons, was tantamount to anything else for him.

Serilda turned once more, this time setting her sights back on Chishan. The hardness in her gaze returned. “So, ‘old friends’ make it a habit to invade one another’s privacy and observe their personal lives anonymously through the shadows, do they?” she asked, sounding every bit the unimpressed noblewoman that she currently was. “Perhaps I am being unreasonable, but the knowledge that you two were friends once upon a time makes your actions worse, not better, and it does not sway my opinion that I am sure you are already aware of.”

Her comments were quick, concise, and cut straight to the point. Serilda knew when to give a speech, and she knew when to speak her mind without rambling or overtalking like a child. And while Gren was keen on not building any friction, Serilda stood beside Vandrad: The time for some answers had come. But, rather than overwhelm them with a great deal of questions, she simply waited with expectant patience, putting Chishan on the spot to explain himself without leading his words through inquiries. Whatever he had to say for himself, it would come from whatever he felt was appropriate to relay.

And then her questions would come.

Mythal didn’t know what to make of what was going on. Frankly, the last couple minutes in his home had been a blur. A painful one that had sucked all of his energy out and left him barely clinging to consciousness. He remembered Lux appearing and saying something and then Gren was there and after that, the strangest sensation of being trapped in some kind of tube. Then they were in a dark, dank cave and he suddenly started to feel better. His energy returned, enough to give him mindful clarity and clear vision. Serilda had explained that Gren had taken them to the Order -- he assumed the group that the former Knight was working with. She continued, saying that Faera was in the midst of an attack on him that was taking place internally. Apparently Lux had appeared to paint quite the visual image of what was compiling within him. Well, it wasn’t the way he wanted to meet these people but it seemed he didn’t have much choice.

A fair number of new faces appeared, seeking to aid him. Serilda had held him pretty tightly, almost unwilling to let any of them touch him. But as her gaze turned to Gren, she would find him returning the stare and after a moment, giving her a soft nod. The older man firmly believed that letting the group of medical professionals take a look at Mythal would provide some answers and give them a starting place to build off of. After a short bit of consideration, Serilda granted them permission and soon he was surrounded by doctors, using their magic to analyze him and stabilize him. One of them, a Doctor Wanda, used her magic to revitalize his system, giving his body just a bit more energy so that he could truly focus on what was going on. He was hoisted onto a gurney and then wheeled through a hallway, followed by the people he knew and flanked by ones he didn’t. The dark skinned woman explained that questions could wait for later, once Mythal had been tended to. Too bad -- he certainly felt all this time walking in silence could be used to get some quality answers.

The woman, named Zifu, spoke to someone through a wristband and informed everyone that the Master would be arriving to meet them soon. What was interesting was that she phrased it as a reintroduction… was it someone he knew? Frankly, the Darkness King couldn’t think of a single person in his life that would keep such a lofty secret. Then again, if anyone was truly good at keeping secrets, they wouldn’t give off that feeling. He should have gone around asking people if they were part of the Order -- at least then he would know if they were lying or not. Soon enough he was rolled into a medical chamber and set upon a bed. One of the doctors removed his shirt with his permission and then he was peppered with small nodes that were sticky and cold against his skin. It wasn’t that much longer before a man entered and came up to him, a familiar face that he couldn’t quite place until he was over him completely.

“Chishan, how… how are you alive? I thought you had died.” Mythal asked, bewildered as he looked the man over.

“I almost did. But thanks to your efforts, I managed to survive,” the blond man explained, continuing to smile.

“But I saw you lyin’ there. There was blood everywhere. How…?”

“Not sure myself. All I remember is the attack and you coming in to try and save us. When I woke up, I was in a hospital in Minstrel. Got an obvious reminder for it too,” he said, gesturing to the scar. Chishan sighed. “I had hoped we’d go about this under better circumstances.”

It was then that Vandrad decided to speak up, interrupting the moment by insisting it was neither the place nor the time for idle chatter. He wanted to know as many details as possible; he wished to know what was wrong with Mythal, where they were and who all of the extra people were. Though Gren tried to disarm the man’s sharp words -- and did, to a point -- the prince hadn’t missed the words spoken about Serilda’s distrust. Because of that, he wanted to know why they had thrown Mythal’s livelihood into their hands and what that made them. The Darkness Slayer looked over to Serilda, just as she turned her attention to him. Silently they spoke to one another, realizing that they had come as far as possible withholding Mythal’s past from Mercury and Vandrad. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust the two of them with it -- it wasn’t like it gave anyone a great advantage over him. It was simply because he was private and his life before meeting Serilda was a bit of a sore subject for him. But simply beating around the bush or trying to explain around it would just be insulting at this point. Mythal inhaled briefly and then nodded to Serilda, giving her the go ahead.

Serilda admitted that she didn’t trust the Order, which earned no reaction out of its members, even as she met Chishan and Zifu’s gazes. But she explained that she trusted Gren’s opinion and, given Mythal’s magic and history, it was hard to find people that could truly offer him help. After another questioning look to Mythal that got another nod, the Voidwalker turned to Vandrad and Mercury and regaled them with the short version of his past. While it wasn’t every detail under the sun, it provided enough context for the two of them to build their own understanding of why they had been forced to come here. It didn’t make things any easier but there wasn’t much they could do about that now anyways.

With the explanation delivered, Serilda turned her attention back to Chishan, taking on her royal poise. It was clear her misgivings about the organization had been brewing in the back of her mind but frankly, the fact that Chishan knew Mythal so well seemed to have struck a deeper chord. She made it a point to question the fact that such an old connection came with the right to invade a person’s private life and watch them from afar. She admitted that she was possibly out of her zone but she believed that having a previous friendship and the existence of the Order and its motives made the matter worse rather than better. She’d already had strong opinions of their actions and it seemed to have been extrapolated thanks to the revelation. Facts and comments that would certainly have bothered most people and most likely earned sharp words as comebacks. After all, no one liked being put on the spot and being accused of acting with bad intentions.

Chishan, however, was not most people. He acknowledged Serilda’s words and nodded softly. “With all due respect, Lady Sinclair, we’ve actively sought not to invade Mythal or your privacy. There was a time in our history where we intervened and installed members within organizations to seek out corruption but that was a long time, before I was asked to take charge. We simply keep tabs on people of interest, especially ones that have had interactions with hostile celestial beings. We seek to root out plots by investigating the ones that are planning, not the targets. It feels less creepy that way,” he admitted with a small laugh. “But I understand why our being a secret organization can raise red flags. In your shoes, I’d feel the same way. And as much as I’d like to bring our actions and goals to the forefront of the world, it would be disastrous for the entire planet. You see, the Order of Souls was created a long time ago, way back when gods and demons ruled the planet with an iron fist. Humans were mere playthings to them; to be used and sacrificed for entertainment and nothing else. The Order was established to push back, to try and save humanity before it was wiped out. We succeeded and then we were betrayed and nearly destroyed. It’s the fact that most gods and demons believe we were wiped out that works to our advantage.”

“But we try and stay out of people’s lives as much as possible. The fact that we brought Gren back was an extraordinary circumstance and the fact that I’ve personally been keeping an eye on Mythal is my own personal way of repaying him. About thirteen years ago, my home village was attacked. A group of bandits decided that our existence was too insulting to bear and burned everything and everyone to the ground. Mythal happened to be there and did what he could to try and save as many people as possible. He’d been staying in town for a couple of weeks by then and we’d seen each other around. He did not like talking to people, especially a snot-nosed fifteen year old like me.” Chishan chuckled, glancing back at Mythal. “But his efforts saved my life. It’s why I dedicated my life to protecting others. It’s how I eventually became part of the Order. And once I’d learned about the actions of the Sons of Faera and the child that came from it, I knew I had to do what I could to help Mythal in any way possible.”

Chishan held up his hands. “I’m not trying to earn your trust right off the bat -- I know it’s not that easy. I just want you to understand that we don’t have agents following your every move or watching you from afar. We only take down additional information if we learn something else from another source and then simply verify it from afar. Hell, the only reason that we even learned Mercury’s name was through the Sorcerer Magazine’s most recent issue. Before that we just called her the lavender haired beauty. All we knew was that she was a friend of Vandrad’s and we only knew that much because Gren told us. Otherwise, we stay out -- we know you guys are perfectly capable of taking care of yourselves.” He turned his gaze back to Serilda. “Now I’m sure you have plenty of questions. Since Mythal is stable at the moment, now is as good a time to ask. I’ll answer what I can but also understand there are confidential pieces of information I can’t disclose. I can’t put any of my people in danger.”

Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
    and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
This was honestly the last place Mercury expected Vandrad to do anything even bordering on caring. Their relationship was confusing even in the most private of moments. There had certainly been moments when he was charming, even sweet, but it wasn’t consistent and was not a regular occurrence because that simply wasn’t what their relationship was as far as either of them were concerned. And for a woman who was very confident in her poker face, she was quite certain that she wasn’t giving anything away of how badly this entire situation was sparking her anxiety.

Yet, his hand found her own all the same, giving it a tight squeeze, holding it much in the same manner as he had a few times before whenever they’d found themselves in a more sobering situation. Somehow, he always seemed to know when she needed him most. Had they really spent so much time together that he could pick up on her emotions even through her mask? It was altogether relieving and terrifying, but at this point she had long since accepted that she wasn’t going to walk away from him just because the Nazru would hunt her for it. Almost immediately, her panic calmed itself and she took a small breath, finding her emotional center once more. Or at least, swimming her way toward it. She still wasn’t pleased about what was currently going on and the kind of threat it posed to her and her cover, but there was no getting out of it now.

So instead, she simply returned the gesture, holding the offered limb firmly and relenting to the sense of peace Vandrad was trying to give her. The gesture lasted for as long as it took to walk to their current destination before they could finally settle for a moment, and then Vandrad returned to his usual state of standing with his arms crossed over his chest. Mercury stood beside him, not entirely willing to let him stray too far while surrounded by so many unknown people, but she had managed to calm down enough that she was no longer a step away from flying off the handle. She, too, crossed her arms in front of her though her stance was more casual, one hip popped lightly to the side.

As everyone talked, Mercury let the information register in her head in the background while she took in everything around them. Any piece of tech that she could see clearly from where she stood was analyzed and categorized wirelessly in her mind, along with the faces of everyone present and any information they volunteered about themselves. Vandrad was the one who pulled her attention back first, speaking up to point out the time they were wasting in catching up when they should be focusing on Mythal’s health. He presented a slew of other questions, which his father attempted to cut off, if gently. There was a moment as son regarded father, and while Vandrad did not stop his line of questioning he did continue it in a more respectful fashion.

And frankly, his point was merited. Serilda clearly was not keen to be here so… why were they here? Ultimately, it was the noblewoman herself that spoke up, her soft sigh commanding enough to draw everyone’s eyes toward her. Serilda confirmed that she did not trust this Order, whatever it was, unafraid to cast a knowing glance directly toward Chishan and Zifu. But, as she advised Vandrad directly, she did trust his father’s judgement and she had little else to turn to that could truly help her fiance.

Mercury knew things were about to get serious when the Voidwalker looked to Mythal for some kind of confirmation to continue before facing them fully. What she described was… well, a bit confusing for the alien. Mythal’s birth had apparently been orchestrated by a goddess that wanted to use his body as a means to… take over Earthland? So she’d had an angel mate with a human to birth a child that the goddess could inhabit. This alone was confusing enough to the lavender haired mage, who frowned heavily with thought. The subject of gods and demons and angels had always been a difficult one for her. She had no equivalent to their concept in her society, so while she felt like she generally understood what they were, somehow she also always felt like she was greatly missing the picture.

Why would a person need another person’s body to perform a task? Where was Kingdom Darkness that it was so isolated and different from the rest of the planet that this goddess couldn’t even leave it? The concept of alternate planes of existence wasn’t exactly something she knew anything about, and anyone trying to explain it to her would probably get similar reactions as they got to the main topic at hand. Supposedly, Gren had managed to stop this spell before it could be completed when Mythal was a child, which likely led into how he had wound up as the man’s adoptive father in the first place. And while the greater points of the story made sense -- Mythal was bred to be a tool, his breeders had failed, and they have spent the rest of his life pursuing him to reach their goal -- the weight and gravity of what Serilda was implying was going straight over her head in a way that was most frustrating to the Silver Wolf Ace.

Questions brewed in her mind, but Mercury wouldn’t have asked them just yet even if she had been given the chance. To do so would reveal herself to be not so knowledged on a subject that Earthlanders seemed to take for granted, and she was not comfortable enough here to draw attention to herself over something that might mark her as an outsider. Instead, she continued to watch carefully as Serilda turned her focus back on Chishan and remarked her obvious disappointment over the idea that the man had been spying on a supposed friend and invading their personal lives without permission, which seemed to be the heart of her distrust for this Order. Mercury had never seen Serilda this irate and commanding before. She had always been fairly laid back around them, but now she could fully see the mannerisms on display that seemed to be a talent to all the people she’d met so far that claimed to be nobility or royalty. It was impressive, and a little intimidating. Mercury knew she could carry herself just fine in the face of adversity, but her own brand of confidence was much different, more subtle, and not as likely to cause an entire room full of people to rethink their next words and actions.

Frankly, she was a little jealous.

Chishan took the comments in stride, not appearing to be offended or upset by them as he explained that the actions she was accusing him of were not what had actually been happening, despite how it has clearly looked to Serilda and Mythal at the time. He assured her that they had in fact done quite the opposite and tried to give them as much privacy as possible, their focus more on people they saw as targets, not as bystanders, which by his own admission would be quite creepy. But, he did understand why Serilda had taken their actions the way that she had, and admitted that he’d probably have reacted similarly in her situation. Unfortunately, the work they did was not something he could allow to reach the outside world, as it would put their entire operation in jeopardy. The Order of Souls, he called it. Mercury immediately added the keyphrase to her queued searches in her head, her brain still hard at work at trying to come up with any and all information available about the group, and finding an alarming result of absolutely nothing.

He did answer some of her questions, though. The Order of Souls had been meant to protect humans from gods and demons, and had been successful, but eventually a betrayal had brought about the death of their organization. Or at least, as far as their enemy was concerned. They used the confusion to their advantage ever since, and according to him they sought great lengths to stay out of the personal lives of all but those they deemed a threat. The only reason Chishan had paid as much attention to Mythal as he had was because Mythal had saved his life as a boy, though by Mythal’s earlier admission the Rune Knight thought Chishan had died. Still, Chishan had survived and the experience he had eventually introduced him to the Order of Souls that he was now master of, and through that connection he learned of Faera and her campaign against Mythal, from which he strived to do everything he could to repay the man’s former actions.

It was a pretty story, and Mercury herself could tell he was being truthful. Not once did any of his vitals spike to indicate any kind of lie or deceit, but she couldn’t exactly speak her understanding out loud as people would question where her assurance was coming from. Serilda was on her own, there, and in her shoes Mercury wouldn’t trust a story just because it sounded like a good one. Even Chishan seemed to be preemptive of that mindset as well, however, stating that he was not attempting to sway the noblewoman’s opinion in any way. He just wanted to provide her better understanding of what they do and how involved they were -- or rather, weren’t -- in snooping into her personal life with Mythal.

Mercury had been perfectly content being an afterthought in the room, but that changed real fast when she suddenly was brought to the spotlight. The blonde man stated that the only reason they even knew Mercury’s identity was because of the recent edition of the Sorcerer’s Magazine that had come out recently, where she and Vandrad had been interviewed as a team. Well, that was a huge relief. They literally had nothing on her but a name and her association with Vandrad, and that was more than enough information as far as she was concerned. She relaxed considerably with that assurance, enough that she was more receptive to the unexpected compliment that followed.

Suddenly, her impish and shameless grin was back on her face. She elbowed Vandrad on his side. “You hear that? The lavender haired beauty. Now here’s a guy who knows how to butter a lady up. You should take notes.” As always, she made no effort to keep her voice down, perfectly content to call Vandrad out on this in front of a crowd. And now that she was mostly back to form, there was no questioning the look on her face as she finally started appreciating how good looking the man was, emerald eyes giving him a considering glance that didn’t seem too much to mind that his girlfriend or wife or whatever they were was standing right there.

Chishan opened things up for questions now that Mythal was stable, and Mercury was certainly dying to ask a few of her own, but she wasn’t quite ready to draw that much attention to herself yet. At least, not with the first questions that came to mind. A different one popped up in her head though and it brought her to a realization that she hadn't picked up back in the antichamber when she'd been too busy with her panic attack to notice. “Yeah, I got a question, but it isn't for tall, bright, and hunky over here." Mercury looked over to Mythal and Serilda. “I'm with you on the backstory. Mostly. But none of that explained bright boy; that guy that showed up at your house before Gren got there, who I can't help but notice is conspicuously missing again. What's that guy's story? Why did he seem to know so much about what was going on?"

Ironically, Vandrad hadn’t been anxious or concerned about the Order of Souls knowing either him or Mercury. He figured since Gren was one of their number, that they would certainly look into and investigate the prince. And given that most of his days were spent with the Silver Wolf mage, it wasn’t that hard to put two and two together. That was significantly less worrisome to him than it was to Mercury and yet he could tell that something about everything that had happened had spooked her. But he also understood that, in a short amount of time, there had been two large and loud events. Given that she was a veteran of war, such loud noises were likely to bring back foul, terrifying memories. While he didn’t personally have PTSD from such things, he understood that she did, considering how she had reacted to the first time she met Bartrand. Coming down from that sudden agitation would take some time and careful consideration.

So he had shown some consideration and apparently it had done the trick. He felt her emotions relax as she took his hand and gave it a squeeze back. Indeed, she would take some time to get back to her normal, pain-in-the-ass self but she was already on her way. Yet he held her hand all the way until they were in the healing chamber, only releasing it once they had taken up residence in the corner of the room. Once Chishan had entered the room, he had met Mythal and started to reminisce and as far as Vandrad was concerned, that was the absolute least important task at the moment. He had said as much, wanting more information and even after his father’s urge to take it easy, he still continued to prod, albeit with a bit more respect. He had questions and while he didn’t feel like he deserved answers, he certainly felt Mythal and Serilda did.

The Field Marshall stated that she didn’t trust the Order but that they had the tools and resources to aid in what was ailing Mythal, considering his strange condition. It was an odd statement, one that invited further queries but after a short moment of silent conversation, it seemed Serilda was privy to provide some background. She told them the tale of Mythal’s birth; how it had been arranged by a goddess named Faera utilizing a faithful human servant and an archangel. The purpose was so that she would have a proper vessel when she entered Earthland and absorbed it into her dominion, called Kingdom Darkness. But apparently Gren and the Rune Knights had intervened at the exact right moment, causing the ritual to fail and allowing Mythal to be rescued and eventually adopted. Yet Faera had continued to follow him as he carried on through life, finding means and ways to try and get back to him. This recent attack was truly only the most recent of a long and tedious history.

It was… a lot to take in. And truthfully, Vandrad suspected that this was a heavily summarized version of the man’s past. The weight of such a past was beyond him, though he had an easier time imagining it than Mercury would. He understood that the idea of ‘gods’ and ‘demons’ was hard to understand for the Silver Wolf mage, if only because she had no basis on her homeworld to compare it to. Still, there was something to be said that a goddess brought Mythal into existence for the sole purpose of using him as a weapon. It was tragic and disheartening and honestly, thinking back to how Mythal had described himself before Fairy Tail, he understood why he had sunk into such a deep hole. His past was hard as well but he couldn’t earnestly compare the two without coming up lacking, though perhaps it wasn’t fair to try and make any kind of comparison in the first place.

And it was such a convoluted scheme to undertake. Why seek to enter a newly born baby’s body when there were other such means to possibly break down the walls? Much like Mercury, Vandrad couldn’t help but wonder where this Kingdom Darkness was. Based on the extravagant title, he imagined that it was some kind of alternate realm, not unlike the one he had been trapped in with Patricia. In that case, there had to be doors between the cracks -- why not try and break open one of those? The story just sparked more questions about Kingdom Darkness that he imagined would go unanswered, if only for lack of information on everyone else’s part. If anyone else sought to remark on the story, there opportunity was missed as Serilda turned her attention to Chishan, focusing in on him and his relation to both her fiance and the Order of Souls. Her tone was sharp and commanding, an all too familiar tone that he had heard countless times in his life. This was the voice of a noble, a royal, when they wanted answers and expected to be properly provided without question or concern. It was the tone that sent people to their knees in bows and assurances of not failing a task again. It was Serilda taking on the full aspect of her heritage and it brought the rest of the room to a standstill.

Except for Monica. The tattooed woman looked like she had damn near swooned at the intense woman.

Amazingly, Chishan wasn’t sent into a blubbering mess of excuses and apologies. If anything, he held fast to his confident stance, if only because he seemed to understand Serilda’s issues and relate to them. He explained that her considerations of his Order were misconstrued, through no fault of her own, as they generally sought to leave people to live their lives on their own. They focused their attention on those that would seek to harm other people, namely gods and demons. Yet he understood why their secrecy had bothered her and simply sought to explain that by operating in the shadows, they could provide the best defense against the enemies of the world. Chishan brought up a little of the Order’s history, how they had formed, how they had succeeded and eventually been betrayed and nearly annihilated. But from the ashes they had been reborn as agents of shadow, operating outside of history so as to properly keep humanity safe from the terrors of the heavens and hells. Mythal had been a special case for them, as Chishan himself had been saved by the Darkness Slayer many years prior and the Master of the Order owed his goal of protecting others to the older man. Once he’d learned of Faera’s and Mythal’s connection, he had done everything in his power to shield the Director and protect him from further complications.

It was a truly unbelievable story but frankly, that’s why Vandrad ultimately believed it. In his line of work, especially in the short time he had worked with shadow operations, he understood that secrecy was a primary weapon. But secondary to that, outrageous myths about groups made people wary, caused them to laugh and dismiss them as legends or rumors. It allowed those shadow ops to move without issue and carry out missions without proper defenses being erected to stop them. It didn’t exactly make it easier to trust Chishan but, as he explained himself, he didn’t seek to win trust right away. He simply wanted to provide answers to the mystery that they had been for so long. It made sense; he was simply offering an explanation rather than trying to win favor. This was a song and dance that Chishan had, quite clearly, mastered over the years. He imagined there were a lot of connections that they formed that required a decent amount of explanation. The Master even went as far as to bring up Mercury, stating that the only reason they had even discovered her name was through the release of the Sorcerer Magazine. He snorted in annoyance -- that damn interview had been a pain in his ass. Though not nearly as annoying as hearing that the Silver Wolf mage had simply been titled as the ‘lavender haired beauty’.

But that seemed to set Mercury back into a state of playful obnoxiousness -- her usual self. She nudged him and insisted that such flowery words were exactly how he should be complimenting her and that he should take advice from the example. "Not in your wildest dreams, woman,” Vandrad scoffed, glancing away from her. Lavender haired beauty -- what the hell kind of designation was that for a secret organization to put on a person? It was so informal, so impractical, so beyond any reason that he couldn’t understand the point. Was this Chishan trying to flirt with Mercury right in front of him? Or was that truly the idiotic way they had been referencing her?

He was almost considering asking that outright but Mercury beat him to the punch. She had a question, though it wasn’t for Chishan, to whom she decided to rain compliments down on as well. "Like ridiculously handsome, girl,” Monica added quickly, giving Chishan a once over much like the Silver Wolf mage had. What the hell kind of company was he in?

But Mercury wasn’t that curious about the backstory of either Mythal, Chishan or the Order. No, she was interested in the light man that had appeared in the house and delivered the first warning. Now that Vandrad looked around, he finally noticed that the spirit was, in fact, gone. Had he even come with them? "Yes, that spirit seemed to know Serilda and Mythal. He even knew that Mythal was sick, something about a compiling darkness within. What was he? And where the hell did he go?”

    Seri Banner
Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Yet more pretty words. Serilda put Chishan on the spot, and to his credit he did not cower or blubber. Rather, he maintained his calm and explained that the truth was quite the opposite to what either of them had taken. Supposedly, they had made it a point not to investigate either or them, nor do anything even bordering on such. They had always been honoring their privacy from the start, their focus more on targets rather than on those caught up as bystanders in the work they did. He admitted that it would be creepy otherwise, emitting a light chuckle that did nothing to crack Serilda’s stony exterior. Continuing on, Chishan explained that he could see why she and Mythal had taken it that way, and admitted he would feel the same in her shoes.

But, according to him, there was a necessity there. The gravity of their work, whatever it was, meant that they could not afford to let knowledge of their existence leak out into the world. He finally put a full name to the organization: The Order of Souls. According to Chishan, the Order had been founded eons ago when gods and demons held domination over Earthland, unchecked by no force. Humanity bore the brunt of the brutality, and eventually the Order was created to fight back and maintain survival. It had succeeded in that goal, but a tragedy occured not long after in the form of a betrayal that caused the rest of the world to believe they had been wiped out.

The Order had taken this in stride, rising from the ashes of devastation and persisting, even striving in its new cover of death, much like Gren himself. Chishan admitted that the only reason he had been keeping tabs on Mythal personally was because the darkness slayer had saved his life, and Chishan sought to use his connection as the Order’s master to protect the man as recompense. In fact, Mythal’s actions were the entire driving force between his life goal of paying the buck forward and protecting other people, the whole reason he had wound up with the Order in the first place.

Serilda continued to be visibly unmoved. The man had a charm about him that was infectious, a disarming smile and a laugh that put you at ease. At least, if you were anyone but Serilda. And perhaps in a less threatening circumstance his almost boyish mannerisms might have been better received, but the Voidwalker was a force all to herself and she would not entertain a smile or snort even for the sake of pretending to be polite or understanding. It was surely written on her face as he assured her that he was under no illusions that his story alone would gain him any kind of trust or respect for the moment. Instead, he advised that he wanted nothing more than to give her the truth for her to take or leave as she saw fit, and to impress upon her that the information they had taken on her and Mythal over the years had not been gathered in any sort of invasive fashion. As an example, he explained that the only reason they had discovered Mercury’s name was because of the magazine.

The noble woman’s brows furrowed slightly, and she glanced toward the pair with some open confusion. Mercury made sense. As much as she deflected attention it was clear that she loved it, if on her own terms. But how in the world had the staff managed to convince Vandrad into going through with it? The prince already looked sour at the mere mention of the article, which was more than enough to confirm its validity to her. But up until that point, the members of the Order had only referred to her by measure of her physique and attractiveness with nothing else to really go on. A grin spread across Mercury’s face that Serilda was more than familiar with by now, the one that spelled social doom for her more surly counterpart. Indeed, she jabbed the shorter man with her elbow and made it a point to bring the title further into the light, chastising him for not treating her with the same deference and charm.

Of course, the prince reacted about as much as Serilda had learned to expect by now, commenting that there was no way in hell he’d call her anything along such lines. It was as greatly amusing as it had ever been, but unfortunately not even their mismatched personalities and dodging romance could draw any hint of lightheartedness out of the noblewoman at that time. She glanced to Mythal briefly as she often did when someone had just woven a tale for them, looking to him for confirmation on how much of what he’d said had been true. If anything Chishan had said had been a lie, Serilda was quite confident that Mythal would have spoken up already, but he had had a very long day that wasn’t over yet, so the extra effort was taken to ensure the truth.

Chishan turned to her once more and opened the floor for questions, with a caveat that Serilda herself was all too familiar with giving. A pensive look crossed her face as she looked deep in thought as though working his story together and debating with herself as to what she wished to ask or say next. Only Mythal would recognize the subtle twitches in her brow and darts in her eyes that indicated she was having a conversation with Victoria. You got anything for me?

Well, what he is saying about the Order is true, insofar as its history and origins. I was there for much of it, as the Seals were one of their primary targets alongside the Primes and Divines. I was not there for whatever ill fate befell them, but I do recall reviving in a new host some time later and learning that they had been wiped out. That was eons ago. I’m rather impressed that they’ve thrived this long without myself or any of my siblings catching wind of them.”

Serilda would have prodded further with the woman to see what kind of details she could glean from what Victoria knew of the Order’s past, but the internal conversation was brought to a screeching halt by a question from Mercury that Serilda truly had not been prepared for. Though in all honesty, she should have been. The Voidwalker had certainly not forgotten about Lux. She had noticed the moment he’d slipped and disappeared back inside Mythal, the egotistical seal still having the good sense to know when it was best to lay low before unknown and dangerous company. But unfortunately, he had already appeared rather violently before the Silver Wolf and Fairy Tail mages, and at the moment that appeared to be the topic on which both of them wished some explanation of.

She greatly wished they hadn’t asked, but the truth was that there was no way she could blame them for doing so, nor resent them for it. Still, the long and deeply exhausted sigh that rushed from her lips spelled her deep resignation over the matter. “An individual that many here are not going to be happy to learn about.” As was becoming a regularity that day, Serilda looked over to Mythal with an apologetic look. “I’m sorry, baby. I guess that cat’s out of the bag, too.” Or at least, it was for one of them. Serilda was not going to reveal Victoria for the time being, but she knew that Mythal would agree with her choice not to do so. It was just such a bummer that so many of the man’s secrets were being spilled before mostly strangers, particularly ones that not even his father knew about.

Finally breaking her formal posture, Serilda wrapped an arm across her chest and set the elbow of her other on top of it, the second’s hand reaching up to rub her temple as if fighting off the makings of a headache. “The man you saw is known as Lux. He is a nephilim that’s been alive since the dawn of the universe itself, known as a Seal: a primordial horseman of the apocalypse… and he shares a soul with Mythal. Each of the Seals holds domain over an element life. For Lux, it’s light.”

She was sure that a great number of people in the room would appreciate the irony there, provided that most of them weren’t immediately losing their heads over the knowledge that one of the top figures of interest was and danger was currently in their midst. Gods forbid they discover there were actually two. Serilda could only hope and pray that Lux either stayed in hiding for now, or at the very least did her a favor for once and kept the knowledge of Victoria to himself. There was honestly no telling with him. She’d only know for sure once he decided it was time for him to pop out again.

“The truth is, this is the first we’ve heard from him in quite some time. The two of them don’t exactly get along, so the fact that he came back to try and warn us is honestly what scares me the most about this. But if anyone is going to have an intimate understanding of what’s happening to Mythal and shed some light on the subject, it’s going to be Lux. I’m sure it’s affecting him too. And given that he and Faera’s domains are polar opposites of one another, I can imagine it’s a rather… volatile dichotomy to be a party of.”

As if only just recalling the events, she turned a curious look toward Vandrad. “How in the world did you manage to grab him like that, anyway? He’s incorporeal. The only ones who had ever been able to touch him before are Mythal and the wolves.” The topic had certainly strayed from where she truly wanted it to be, but frankly it was a valid question. Plus, she was certain the larger topics at hand were not going to be swept under the rug or forgotten about any time soon, and for the moment, as Chishan had already said, Mythal was stable. As such, there was no longer an immediately pending danger to focus on. They could afford a few side tangents to bring Vandrad and Mercury -- and, well, everyone else -- up to speed.

Mythal was expecting that, like most people, Chishan would be cowed by Serilda’s tone. He’d seen people much more influential than the Master of the Order bite their tongue and revisit their strategy when they were confronted with the hard stare and sharp voice that came from being a noble. But rather than backdown and attempt some kind of apology, Chishan simply turned to the Voidwalker and offered her an explanation. He didn’t seek to be a part of Mythal and Serilda’s life anymore than they already had. They simply watched to observe every so often and make sure that the people they had taken note of didn’t come under attack. They apparently didn’t gain much by investigating the targets of plots, when their focus should be on the predators. He even admitted that doing the reverse would feel a bit creepy, chuckling at the amusement of it. He was lighthearted and sincere, though that did little for influencing Serilda one way or the other. Chishan offered an explanation to why they had worked within the shadows for so long. Apparently they had been established back in primitive times, as a guard against the gods and demons that aimed to use and abuse humans. They had succeeded in fighting back but, in doing so, left themselves open to attack from within. They had nearly been brought to extinction, save for a few members. After that, they had built themselves up in secret and simply ran in conjunction with the evolution of man, carrying out their mission while remaining quiet.

Normally they stayed out of people’s lives but Mythal had been someone Chishan directly wanted to aid. Bringing back Gren had simply been a part of that, a key to helping to personalize the protection of Mythal throughout the years. Chishan explained the history between himself and Mythal a bit, wrapping up what had truly been a traumatic experience in a few words. Considering that Chish had almost died at the hands of blades of bandits, he had expected the story to hit a bit harder for the larger man. But he took it in stride, even finding humor in how annoying he had been back when he was younger. It managed to make even Mythal crack a small, tired grin. “A goddamn brat that wouldn’t leave me alone. I was ‘bout ready to wring your neck,” he admitted.

Apparently that event had shaped Chishan’s life and from then on, he had sought to protect others from the dangers of the world. That path had led him to the Order of Souls and eventually brought him back to Mythal upon discovering the connection with Faera. After that, he knew he had to offer aid to his old friend. But he knew that a flowery story wasn’t going to gain immediate trust -- it was clear he understood that trust was earned through actions. He simply wanted to clear the air so they wouldn’t feel like their lives had been invaded, chronicled and observed twenty four seven. He casually mentioned that they hadn’t even known Mercury’s name until the most recent issue of the Mage Magazine or whatever it was had come out, though he added they had taken to calling her a lavender haired beauty. Even Mythal had to question the obscurity of such a description within an organization… but then again the Rune Knights employed the likes of Lilith and her methods were rather unorthodox as well. Mercury got a kick out of it and used it as a means to further tease Vandrad.

Overall, they sought to keep themselves as far away from people’s personal lives as possible, given the circumstances. With Chishan’s explanation out of the way, he opened the floor to questions. Understandably, there was little doubt that all of them had plenty of things to ask but it was the Silver Wolf mage that spoke up first, directing her attention away from the Master of the Order and back to the point of Lux. He hadn’t gone with them once they had warped to the cave and his appearance in the house had shaken Mercury and Vandrad’s curiosity arguably more than anything else -- if only because they lacked an explanation.

Mythal took a moment to look at Serilda and give her a silent acknowledgement that Chishan’s words had been true throughout the story. There hadn’t been a speck of a lie within his explanation, which was saying something considering the intent of their organization. The Voidwalker took a moment to consider with Victoria as the odd couple put forth their questions, asking the old hag what she knew about what was going on. Mythal wouldn’t get to hear what she said until later so all he could do was trust that Serilda was verifying the Order’s story from a second source. But the question of Lux drew her attention back to the current situation and realizing that not explaining him would certainly earn scrutiny and suspicion, the Field Marshall sighed. Indeed, even Mythal was shaking his head softly, understanding that the particular subject of the Seals would have been better left unsaid but… they couldn’t exactly blame Mercury and Vandrad for wanting to know more. Serilda apologized to him and he shrugged. “Ain’t much we can do about it now.”

That earned quite a few looks from the members of the Order, including Chishan. Serilda finally managed to relax as she got right to the meat of the issue. Rather than beat around the bush and lead into the topic, she presented it fully for everyone to hear. She gave them Lux’s name and what he was and how he was connected to Mythal. Zifu looked downright shaken. “You’re telling me that Lux is here, right now and he is attached to Mythal?” she asked again. It was a rhetorical question of course but the weight of such a devastating delivery was almost unbelievable. She turned her gaze to Chishan. “If Faera realizes…”

“I know,” Chishan said calmly, waving a hand gently to her. It was clear that Serilda had more to speak on the matter and the Master wanted to hear more. And indeed, the Voidwalker went on to say that Lux had been missing some time, detached from the present as it seemed Lux and Mythal had a tumultuous relationship. She put a lot of weight behind the fact that the Lightbringer had revealed himself suddenly, owing most of her fear to that emergence. But whatever was happening was surely putting Lux at risk too and if he said something was dark, that held a lot of weight.

Serilda suddenly turned to Vandrad, wanting to know more on the fact that he had so easily grabbed Lux when the only other people that had managed that task were Mythal and the wolves. The prince offered a brief explanation of his magic, called Energy Monarch, and how it allowed him control over most, if not all, elements tied to ethernano. Incorporeal beings apparently were something he was used to tussling with. “Makes sense,” Chishan said with a soft nod. “Your magic is rare and powerful. We’ve seen instances of it before -- we even thought Gren may have had access to it.”

“Not me. He musta got that from his mother,” Gren spoke up, having finally stepped up to the group. His wound had been treated but there was little doubt he’d be sporting a long jagged scar, not unlike Chishan’s over his eye.

The Master opted not to remark on that, instead turning to Mythal. “How long has Lux been with you?” he asked softly.

Mythal shrugged. “About two years now or so. Shortly after our dalliance in Kingdom Darkness, he appeared durin’ one of our missions. He was continuin’ to be a pain in my ass until some shit went down with a dark mage. We had an issue and he decided to run and hide. He’d been AWOL ever since.” He glanced at Zifu before looking back to Chishan. “Why? What’s the matter?”

“The Seals are… a high tier focus for the Order. Given that they are meant to bring about the apocalypse, they obviously grabbed our interest. That event hasn’t come to pass but we still keep an eye out for Seal-related events. There have been times in the past where the Seal has overtaken the host and caused devastation.” Chishan explained sadly. “But, considering that you apparently have him on a leash, I don’t think we have to worry about that.”

“But if Faera comes to understand that you have a Seal or, worse yet, takes control of you, she will be able to take control of him. She would become far worse than she ever was before,” Zifu cut in, explaining the matter with substantial more concern. “It was imperative we made sure you survived before, Director Ragnos. Now it is doubly important.”

“Yeah, not gonna lie, that sounds like a fuckin’ tragedy waitin’ to happen,” Mythal admitted, leaning back and sighing.

As the conversation had gone on, Monica had been glancing over at Mercury every couple of minutes, basically observing how she reacted to the current landscape of the situation. She had now made it a point to come over and lean on the wall beside her, eyes forward but attention clearly anything but. "Hey,” she said, giving the Silver Wolf mage a nod of the head. "I know I introduced myself before but… I’m Monica. You’re the lavender haired beauty and damn, if they didn’t get that right,” the tattooed woman said, taking the time to very obviously look Mercury over. "I get the feelin’ that you’re on my level so I just wanted to come and share a thought with you. Is it just me or is there a ridiculous amount of attractiveness in this room? Like I should be concerned about this whole Mythal bein’ attacked thing and I am but damnit if I can’t help but be a little aroused by all the hot people. What’s the story with uh, short, dark and attractive on your arm there? He looks like he can give one hell of a poundin’.”

Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
    and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
Apparently, Mercury wasn’t the only one checking Chishan out. The other woman, Monica, was half a second behind her with the compliment toward the blonde man’s appearance, and Mercury didn’t miss the words of agreement, but she was far more preoccupied at the moment getting out the question that she wanted to ask. One that Vandrad was also curious about, it seemed. Whoever the guy was, it was obvious from Serilda’s body language that she wished the topic hadn’t come up. Mercury did feel a little bad about that, surprisingly, but at the same time it wasn’t like she’d known it was a sensitive topic and frankly she was far too curious to back down now. The couple shared another look as Serilda lamented about more of Mythal’s secrets being out in the open, as apparently the individual was someone that the Order wouldn’t be altogether pleased to learn about.

Mythal took it in stride, as he did most things, agreeing that there was little that could be done to avoid the topic now. It was going to come up one way or another. And boy, if Mercury thought the last conversation about gods and rituals was difficult to comprehend, it was nothing in comparison to what was coming. The noblewoman told everyone that the man they’d seen at the house was called Lux, and he was a… nephilim? It was a term she had heard before, having come across it in her studies of religion and pantheons, but along with everything else she’d really never grasped the idea outside of them being a mixed breed of two warring peoples. Supposedly his official title was a Seal, which was the title that Mercury thought was weird. Horseman of the apocalypse? Domains?

All of this was going right over her head. She once again grasped the greater concepts: He was ancient, powerful, and could control light. But as always, the weight of what everyone was discussing didn’t quite land with her. Zifu, on the other hand, was immediately put on edge about the knowledge. Her pulse was irregular with trepidation and concern as she sought confirmation that the nephilim was presently there with them in the room. The dark woman started to comment further, but Chishan cut her off gently, agreeing but wanting to hear more of what Serilda had to say.

According to the Voidwalker, the relationship between Mythal and Lux wasn’t exactly the most stable. Mercury got the sense that an argument of some kind had ensued that had caused Lux to go into hiding for a while, and apparently him reappearing after all this time -- particularly to save Mythal -- was tantamount to a rival swooping in to watch your back. It wasn’t a gesture Serilda had taken lightly, that much was sure. Serilda turned her gaze curiously to Vandrad for a moment, inquiring as to how he had managed to get his hands on Lux in the first place since the man was made entirely of light and lacking a physical body. In return, Vandrad explained a bit about some of the finer details of Energy Monarch and how it gave him the ability to affect anything consisting of ethernano, incorporeal or no.

This seemed to make sense of Chishan, who apparently was familiar with the rare type of magic. That was rather suspect to the ever paranoid Xocili, but she kept the thought to herself for now, particularly since he admitted there had been a time that they thought Gren might have had it. But, by the older man’s opinion, it had to have been a magic that Vandrad received from his mother’s side as Gren had never had magic similar to what Vandrad described. The prince’s father had finished getting seen to by now, stepping up to join the conversation in full and showing off the gouge on his face that was surely going to be a rather rugged scar some day.

In fact, this was the first time Mercury was finally able to have the time and leisure to actually look at the man. She’d always known he was handsome, because Vandrad was practically a younger, shorter clone of his father. Gren had a bit more crow’s feet on his face, but that just meant he was quicker to smile than Vandrad was. The facial hair was also really doing it for her. But he was just as jacked as his son, but seemed to hold more of a gentle nature like Chishan did. She certainly wasn’t against the two of them standing next to each other where she could eye them both. Hell, even Zifu was pretty hot now that she was taking a chance to look at her without the veil of panic.

She listened politely as the others in the room went back and forth about the Seals and how long Mythal had been aware of his. It seemed Lux had only spawned within the last year, and things had been pretty tense between them before culminating in an argument involving a dark mage that sent Lux into hiding. Chishan explained, as Serilda had predicted, that the Seal were a pretty top tier priority for the Order. Clearly, the Seals had yet to follow through with whatever cataclysmic event they were thought to be affiliated with, but that didn’t mean that they weren’t any less dangerous or worth keeping an eye on.

Truth be told, while Mercury didn’t fully understand it she was quite interested in the conversation. Whatever these Seals were, she got the sense that they were some of the most powerful beings on Earthland, people that the Nazru would greatly benefit from learning about. Already she had set aside her fruitless searches about the Order and was delving into information on the Seals, of which there actually was a bit more information. Granted, most of it was being presented more as a legend or myth than anything else, so she wasn’t entirely certain what was and wasn’t true. But according to what she found there were seven of them, one of each personifications of Conquest, War, Pestilence, Chaos, Light, Death, and Souls. There were even some rumors that a mysterious eighth existed, of which the speculation was that it was something to do with Balance.

The short version of what she was sure was a long story was that if Faera absorbed Lux’s power along with getting control of Mythal, then she would be even more of a threat than she already was.

Mercury was about to get into researching a bit more on Faera herself when she felt Monica sidle over a little closer to her and get her attention with a mostly hushed greeting. Letting her queries run in the background, Mercury blinked and turned to look at the other woman before taking a small step or two back from the main group to give Monica the somewhat more private audience that she clearly wanted. Monica reintroduced herself, affirming Mercury as the lavender haired beauty once more, earning a surprised but pleased smirk from the Xocili. Then, she went into a small hushed tangent, stating how she felt like she and Mercury were kindred spirits in regard to at least one thing in particular that she had to get off her chest. That thing was apparently how unbelievably attractive everyone present was. Yes she should have been focusing on her concern for Mythal, and she was concerned, but it was hard not to be distracted by everyone around them.

“Oh my stars, I know, right? Mercury replied, clearly right in line with the heavily inked woman. “It literally was only just starting to hit me. I had to calm down a little bit. Everything happened so quickly, but what the fuck? My ovaries haven’t felt this attacked since I first met the rest of Vandrad’s family. Cause lemme tell you, that is a house full of sexy people that love sex.” Speaking of Vandrad, it seemed Monica was quite interested in hearing more about the shorter copy of Gren, and Mercury got the feeling she was looking for the juicy shit.

A large, impish grin spread across her face, the one she reserved for moments when she was at the height of being a little shit. “You have no idea,” she told Monica. “That man had wrecked me three ways from Sunday, and the first time he did it it was after he failed trying to kill me. You can imagine how wild that shift was. But get this: That was the first time he’d ever had sex. He was chaste for almost forty years, and yes that shit was built up. He’s also like… ridiculously irritable about that kind of stuff. He hates discussing it, insinuating about it… Stars forbid you suggest he does anything more than tolerate me. You’ll practically see steam coming out of his ears. So naturally, I bring the subject up any time I see the remote opportunity. Did you see the way his nose scrunched up when I pointed out the nickname to him? It’s my favorite.”

Deciding she may as well make herself comfortable, and now more than a little distracted by her current present company, she leaned her back up casually on the wall next to Monica and gave the woman her primary attention while she continued to take in the conversation idly in the background. “What about you? What’s your story, cause whatever it is I’m all about it. Also, what can you tell me about Vandrad Senior because I’ve got a bingo card going and I’m thinking about adding him to it. Gotta see how far the apple fell from the daddy tree.”

If the weight of the room was already heavy, it somehow managed to pile on even further.

Chishan’s explanation was long and varying but it was strange enough that Vandrad knew it had to be true. That and the fact that Serilda and Mythal had shared a moment of looking at one another and the Darkness Slayer had given her a soft nod to indicate… something. The prince could only assume that meant that somehow, Mythal was capable of detecting if someone was lying in his presence. Now that was a handy ability to have, one that Vandrad actually felt a little remorse he couldn’t master. Sensing a person’s emotions was one thing but outright being able to sense lies was an all-together different and useful quirk. Whatever the case, it had given Serilda and Mythal enough understanding to, at least, continue the conversation rather than circling back to confront him over any deceptions. When the floor was opened for questions, the top most query for the two of them was over the aspect of the man made of light, who had seemingly disappeared after his sudden materialization in Mythal and Seri’s home.

There was a moment of apprehension between Mythal and Serilda -- a fluttering of emotions that Vandrad sensed quite well. Apparently they had touched upon a topic that they wanted to be left unsaid and had been outed. He might have felt a tad guilty over wrestling a secret out into the open but, considering the circumstances, he felt they were owed a little bit of the details. Another look was passed between the couple before Serilda opened up about the strange man named Lux. She explained that he was a nephilim, called a ‘Seal’, and that he was an instigator of some kind of rumored apocalypse. He also happened to share a soul with Mythal, possessing control over the element of light. That bit of news sent a new charge into the room, with Zifu speaking up in almost disbelief at the revelation. Chishan calmed her down for the moment, wanting to hear more from Serilda rather than jumping to conclusions and overreacting. If Vandrad were being honest, he was rather surprised that the leader of the shadow organization managed to keep his cool when confronted with startling and sharp words and secrets.

Serilda continued, saying that Lux had apparently disappeared for some time after his tumultuous relationship with Mythal had soured further. The fact that he had reappeared in such haste and concern had actually made the situation with Mythal all the more pressing, at least to Serilda. She theorized that whatever was affecting Mythal was putting Lux in danger too, as his use of light went directly against Faera’s speciality in darkness. Somehow that sparked a question of her own but directed at him, with Serilda curious as to how Vandrad was able to grab Lux with such ease. He was incorporeal and, as such, should have been impossible to touch outside of Mythal and apparently the Star Wolves. "My magic of Energy Monarch is a special kind of magic that connects me to ethernano on a deeper level than most mages. I’m able to control and manipulate every type of magic element that exists, so long as it’s made of ethernano or some variation of it. Ghosts and spirits are made of spiritual essence which is a form of ethernano. It doesn’t take a lot of control for me to be able to take hold of them or, better yet, shake them free of the mortal coil.” It was an explanation that he’d given several times before, when specific cases that should have been impossible were easily overcome by the prince. It also meant that Vandrad was perfectly capable of getting his hands on most creatures that probably saw themselves as impervious to physical harm.

Chishan nodded and agreed with his assessment, remarking on its rarity and strength. For a moment he considered the man curiously, as he hadn’t expected anyone in the room to truly understand his power outside of Mercury. Then again, this was an old order of vanguards that had recorded magics throughout history no doubt. Chishan mentioned he thought that Gren might have possessed the magic as well but the older man confirmed that he didn’t, assuming that Vandrad had inherited it from his mother. The truth was he hadn’t and the prince knew as much -- when his magic had awakened many years ago, his family had been just as shocked as he had been. But he opted not to share that information, at least not for the general public. He took a moment to look his father over, who had been treated and patched up, though he’d be sporting a facial scar after his attack. A badge of honor as far as Vandrad was concerned.

The conversation turned back to Mythal, as Chishan asked how long Lux had been active. It had been around a year since the Seal had materialized during a mission. Apparently Lux had a tendency to be a pain in the ass, to which Vandrad shot a sideways look to Mercury, understanding full well what that kind of existence was. But after a confrontation with a dark mage, they’d had a disagreement and Lux had retreated for a long time. Upon asking why it bothered Chishan and Zifu, the Master explained that the Seals were a primary target for the Order of Souls. Given the prophecy of the apocalypse they were meant to kickstart, the Order was, understandably, wanting to understand them more. Apparently there were records of Seals taking over their vessels and causing mass carnage. Yet Chishan didn’t seem bothered about Lux, believing that Mythal had him controlled for the most part. An emotional sentiment that Vandrad understood but didn’t quite agree with. He liked Mythal but a force as powerful as Lux seemed to be, there was still a concern about losing the reigns and finding himself overwhelmed.

Zifu shared a similar concern but more on the fact that if Faera attempted to gain control of Mythal or manipulate him in any fashion, the goddess could become even more powerful with the Seal’s strength added to her own. A sound fear as far as Vandrad was concerned and even Mythal didn’t like the sound of that. He was honestly quite interested in the current conversation but he sensed movement off to his side and glanced over to see the tattooed woman approaching Mercury. He split his attention to the front and to his side as Monica introduced herself to the Silver Wolf mage once more, straight up flirting with the other woman over the lavender haired beauty title. As if that wasn’t ridiculous enough, this other Order member had noticed a similarity between herself and Mercury and decided to focus on the looks of the people in the room rather than the growing tension and serious situation. She was attuned to the concern but apparently her loins felt triggered by the attractiveness level of the gathered members. Worse yet, she inquired specifically about him and his ability in, what he assumed, was fornication.

"Tsk,” he scoffed in annoyance, giving the pair a side glare. He expected Mercury to give the woman a short response and then return to the current conversation. Oh but why would he expect anything better of the insufferably woman? No, instead she stepped away from him and closer to Monica, deciding to engage her in a full conversation. She shared the woman’s sentiments, musing over the fact that her own sexual organs were under ‘attack’ as she put it and hadn’t felt this stimulated since her time in Bellum. Now Vandrad was one hundred percent done with the conversation, shaking his head and trying to force his blood pressure to go back to a somewhat solid ground.

"A whole house of sex addicts? Now those sound like family members I want to meet,” Monica responded enthusiastically, still trying to keep her voice down. Lucky for her perverted mind, Mercury was more than happy to share details about her sex with Vandrad. She told the tattooed woman about just how much he had destroyed her, apparently first engaging one another after an unsuccessful attempt to kill her. It had also been Vandrad’s first time, having kept his chastity for almost forty years and confirming that he had saved up quite a bit. Yet despite how satisfying it sounded, the prince hated bringing up anything sexual in any regard nor did he listen to anyone suggesting that he liked Mercury in any regard. That, of course, meant that Mercury did everything she could to bring it up and get him all riled up. Monica was grinning from ear to ear. "You are a brat and I think I kinda love you. It’s been a long time since I got a good hard, hate fuck. You think if I prod him enough he’ll do the same thing to me? I bet I could make it happen. Or we could double team him on it -- I bet he couldn’t handle both of us pickin’ on him. I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing what your body can do but the both of you? I’m already rarin’ to go.”

Apparently both of the women had decided that they wanted to have their own little sidebar, far from the seriousness of the main discussion. Mercury got herself comfortable on the wall beside Monica and the tattooed woman was more than happy to shimmy a little closer. "Me? I ain’t an Order member. I’m part of an indie guild called Lusty Titans. And yes, we live up to our names -- it’s basically one giant orgy day in and day out. We trade in information and body fluids,” she added with a wicked and naughty smirk. Mercury turned her curiosities to Gren, wanting to know his story for the sake of some kind of ‘bingo’ card. It took Monica no time to figure out what she meant. "Hold the phone, you tellin’ me you already got it in with some of his family? Girl, you are bad and I kinda need you on me right now. But we’ll save that when there’s a lull in all this serious talk. Gren is a fine glass of aged wine but he is stubborn; we’ve been on two missions together and he hasn’t given in once yet. And he looks like he has some of that old school sex knowledge, you know? But I can share this,” Monica thrust her hand into her pants pocket and pulled out her iLac, quickly opening it up to the picture folders. There she brought up her proud display of pictures she had taken of Gren’s rear and front, heavily zoomed on his ass and crotch. "Couldn’t help myself -- I needed somethin’ to get me over the edge durin’ those long, lonely nights,” Monica explained as she continued to flip through images, each one of different angles on the former Knight’s covered lower body.

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
As she had expected, the Order wasn’t exactly thrilled to hear about Lux’s connection to Mythal, nor that he was currently in the room with them via the darkness slayer. Though Zifu was really the only one that vocalized her concern over the matter. Chishan seemed to feel much the same but he was more composed about it, gently quieting his significant other in order to finish hearing Serilda out. The Voidwalker finished wrapping up at least the more recent events that involved the Seal, stating that his presence in Mythal’s life was a bit of a strain, but the fact that he was here now was quite the cause of concern regarding this entire debacle, if only because Lux didn’t care enough about Mythal to give a warning like that readily.

Vandrad explained that the reason he could handle Lux was due to his magic, known as Energy Monarch. It allowed him to tap into a material known as ethernano, of which most matter was composed of, including light and spirits. Because of this, he could use or manipulate just about anything in the world around him. Frankly, it sounded much like how her Voidmagic operated, except that the magics targeted different things. In fact, if his magic was based on tapping into the base molecular component of matter, Serilda had a feeling her magic was probably one of the few things he couldn’t control. The Void was literally just that: a void. Emptiness. A vacuum consisted of complete and absolute emptiness, where no matter at all existed. There was only one way to find out, and perhaps some day she would see if he’d be interested in a duel.

But right now, such ideas were far from her mind. Chishan kept the topic on hand, inquiring with Mythal how long Lux had been around. Serilda was… honestly a bit surprised to realize Lux and Victoria truly had been a part of their lives for close to a year, now. But what was more surprising, and more concerning, was the details that followed after. The Seals were confirmed to be a high profile target with the Order, which solidified Serilda all the further in keeping Victoria a secret for as long as possible. While she had been somewhat assuaged on at least Chishan’s honesty and his history with Mythal, she still wasn’t thrilled about Order in general, and wasn’t ready to trust them fully yet. There was still the matter of them locking away pieces of Gren’s memories, among a great deal of other pieces of information that she’d picked up from her time spent with Gren so far. Chishan voiced his understanding about how even one Seal could be quite destructive, and boy didn’t Mythal and Serilda know that all too well.

It was Zifu that brought her to a more terrifying realization, however. She seemed to be afraid that Faera completing her ritual with Mythal was now all the worse because if she got what she wanted, she would also get Lux and all of his power. Serilda’s attention practically snapped to the darker woman, the expression on her face a mixture of concern and bewilderment. “Wait, you don’t think she could actually do that..?” she asked, the terrifying notion dawning on her before their very eyes. “That shouldn’t be possible, not even for Faera. A Seal shares a soul with their host, but that connection is through bloodline. If their host dies, then the Seal goes dormant until the next eligible person in the bloodline awakens them. They don’t die with the host.”

By now she was talking more to herself than anyone else, voicing her mental train of thought out loud for everyone else to follow along with her. Her arms were still crossed over her chest, one hand raised in a light fist to tap her thumb gently against her chin as she threw scenarios through her head. Talk to me.

Even Victoria was more than a little taken back by this revelation. She’d been alive for so long with very little that could actually threaten her, it had been quite some time since she’d ever really had to consider the possible mortality of her or her siblings. I… I don’t know. Theoretically, I suppose it is possible. But it would depend entirely on the type of ritual she’s casting. If Mythal dies as a result then it’s more likely than not that Lux would simply regenerate into his next host. But if the spell is something along the lines of absorbing his soul or locking it away… The old woman’s voice trailed off. I can’t say with certainty that she wouldn’t somehow find a way to manipulate or absorb Lux, too.”

“This is bad,” Serilda murmured out loud, still speaking to Victoria though to nearly everyone else present it would seem more as though she had simply reached the conclusion in her head that Zifu’s worries might be merited after all.

I agree. Serilda, you know that we cannot allow this to happen.

I know, I know. She started pacing, a habit that Serilda only took up when she was fully preoccupied in her head about something of utmost urgency. Mythal was stable for now, but how long would that last? Could they even do anything about it aside from delaying the inevitable? Was Faera aware, now that Mythal was mostly back in control, that they were fighting her off? Did she have a way to double down and overcome whatever measures they currently had in place? Surely by now Ruman and Izrael had informed Faera of their encounter with the dual slayers in Morgate, and she was likely more prepared for the strength of resistance that she’d be up against. How much time did they really have to combat this? The longer they waited, the more time Faera had to get what she wanted and to prepare for whatever they could think of to throw at her.

Faera needed to be dealt with, immediately. The only way to put this entire thing to a stop was to take her out, and if Serilda wasn’t prepared enough to make an attempt now, when would she ever be? She and Mythal were already two of the strongest people on the planet. They had far surpassed their peers to the point where many could hardly fathom their strength. She had nearly no threshold to surpass anymore outside of becoming a deity herself, which was not something she was at all interested in. It would be better if Mythal was there with her, but what could he do in his current state? He would just risk her getting what she wanted faster. Like it or not, this was not something he was going to be able to help with.

All at once, she stopped pacing. Serilda stood still for a long moment, her fist by her chin clenching and unclenching as she wrestled with the realization that had just taken root in her head. Slowly, she turned her head once more to look at Mythal, and he was not going to like the apologetic or determined expression on her face. Unfortunately, she had made up her mind.

“Ruzatz, I need you.” There was a firmness to her tone that betrayed the importance of the Prime Sin responding with immediacy. Serilda rarely called upon the Sin of Lust in this manner. In fact, she never had before. Whenever either of them interacted with Ruzatz or his wife it was almost always by phone or simply by visiting in person. The only reason Serilda knew she could contact him this way was because she’d done so with Orozith. She was certain it would work with her friend, and she was equally as certain that he would know the only reason she was resorting to this method of communication was if it was urgent. She hated doing this to him a second time, but what choice did she have?

Extending a hand, Serilda opened a small portal of Void that was only slightly bigger than her head. The limb passed through the point of entry, disappearing into the pocket realm beyond and leaving her momentarily standing there looking as though she were missing half an arm. A moment later she withdrew both of her scimitars, the weapons’ respective magical auras completely masked by the enchanted sheathes that left them feeling like little more than mundane swords in the senses of any who might try to prod into their make. She focused herself on strapping the blades on either side of her hips. Her outfit wasn’t exactly ideal for fighting in, but that wouldn’t matter. Serilda still had the vestments Ozorith had bestowed upon her and she could summon them before she left.

All she needed was for Ruzatz to get here so she could try to find a way to convince him to send her to Kingdom Darkness again.

The truly terrifying fact was that they didn’t really know what could happen with Faera and Lux. Zifu was just speculating but based on the fact that Mythal had been getting significantly sicker and weaker had sparked something of a memory in her. Even as she theorized on it, she was walking away from the group to look over the shoulder of Doctor Wanda, looking at the screen. As she watched the readings appearing on the monitor she nodded softly, pointing at some of the data. Doctor Wanda nodded along with her, a solemn notion that certainly didn’t spell good news. That wasn’t good and Mythal knew it. Serilda spoke up, suddenly realizing the implications of Faera trying to wrest control of Mythal’s body and Lux and questioning it. As far as she believed, the soul that was joined to the Seal had to still exist for the Seal to so if it perished, then the Seal would go into remission until another in the family line was created that fit the right requirements. “Except Faera isn’t trying to kill Mythal. She is trying to merge their souls together,” the Queen explained as she took a printout of the screen and walked it over for Serilda to look over.

It was a lot of highly detailed medical and magical readouts, analyzing Mythal’s bodily data. In truth, it wasn’t easy to decipher but Zifu pointed to a specific measurement -- something indicated as the Spirit Durability. And the percentage was reading at just under eighty percent. “Analyzing a person’s soul is not an easy thing to do for any machine -- even those with magical abilities find it complicated, so you can imagine what it is like to crunch all that information into numbers. Over the years we’ve managed to extract information and create an algorithm that analyzes a soul’s strength, meaning how connected it is with a person’s body. Believe it or not, it is quite possible to dwindle one’s soul through the means of corruption or actions taken by the person’s body. There’s even monsters out there that can simply eat the soul and leave an empty husk in the aftermath. I know this sounds off topic but I am getting to a point.”

“Several years ago, my country was attacked by a crazed god. Much like Faera, he was seeking to raze the world but instead of conquering it, he simply wanted to burn it to its core. But his current form was deteriorating so he captured several of my people and performed a dark and damning ritual. Essentially he weakened their soul until it was nothing but embers and then merged it with his. By doing this, he was able to absorb their abilities and magic into himself, making him all the stronger and scarier. It also drove him crazier, as the spiritual echoes of the soul remained behind and certainly haunted him after. It was only after he had been destroyed by the Order of Souls and I joined their ranks that I researched the instance myself. There are several spells like it and no doubt, someone as powerful and influential as Faera would be capable of enacting a similar ritual from the realm of Kingdom Darkness. Mythal’s sickness indicates that his soul and body are being attacked at the same time, the latter being weakened so that the former started to dwindle. Once his soul has been brought to its barest limits, Faera will take it over and absorb it fully into herself. She will attain everything that Mythal has -- including his connection to Lux.”

“And as such, she would have command over whatever abilities Lux controls. Faera would become a goddess of darkness and light, mixing the elements and giving her almost unstoppable power,” Chishan finished, his brow furrowed in concern. He had a feeling that something like this was happening but the revelation that a Seal was within Mythal made the situation all the more precarious. “Do we know the exact spell she’s using? There might be a weakness we can utilize from here.”

“We’re compiling all of the information we can on the alien magic power within Direct Ragnos but we have nothing on file to identify it apart from his normal magic. Once the scans are complete, we’ll be able to match magical wavelengths and figure out which is the anomaly and locate it in our databases.” Dr Wanda spoke up, explaining the science coolly and smoothly. “For now, our magical enchantments are slowing the progress by one hundred and twenty five percent. The deterioration on Mythal’s soul was reversed a large portion and is happening much slower than before. But it only bought us a few days, at maximum, and that’s counting that Faera doesn’t counter our efforts and overcome the barriers.”

“If there’s somethin’ blockin’ her, she’ll try an’ find a way around it. She’s crafty,” Mythal said with a shake of his head. Serilda stated a rather simple concern but her voice was rife with a tense unease. She started to pace in the empty space in front of her, her thoughts running wild as she tried to think of a quick and decisive strategy. Mythal was sure that she was bouncing ideas off of Victoria.

Chishan and Zifu observed the Field Marshall walking but chose to let her do what she had to. Telling her what to do seemed to be the worst possible action right now. The least they could do is offer some insight to alleviate the stress. “The good news, if we can call it that, is that at the most, Mythal has a handful of days. Even if Faera enacts a method to bypass our current protections, we have several other layers to activate to slow her. And our scans won’t take very long, at most an hour from now we’ll know what magic is her’s and we can use that to identify the spell. From there, it’s just about locating a useful counter spell.”

“Unfortunately, that means you can’t leave the premises until we’ve come up with a strategy and plan. Hope you didn’t have any plans for the next couple of days,” Chishan turned to face Mythal, offering him a half-hearted smile, trying to lighten the mood.

“A few but nothin’ I can’t put off. Though ya might need to get more comfortable pillows if yer plannin’ on havin’ me sleep here,” Mythal said, patting one of the pillows. He was about to make another comment when Serilda came to an abrupt stop, having finished her train of thought. For a long, stressful beat she stood still, finalizing whatever stray grievances she might have had. Then slowly she turned to face him and the look the Darkness King saw sent a horrified chill down his spine. It was the look of a woman who had decided her mission, one that had come up with a plan that she couldn’t debate or delay on. And in the back of his mind, even in the deepest thresholds of his heart, he already had a feeling he knew what she was going to do.

She moment she called for Ruzatz, he was trying to push himself up from the bed. “Serilda, you are not doin’ what I think yer doin’,” he stated quickly as he got to his feet, finding himself woozy and taking hold of the bed to steady himself. But even before the rest of the group could consider what the hell was going on, a pink and red line of magic cut into the air and swirled open, creating a pulsating portal.

From it emerged a half-naked man. He would have been full naked but he was very quickly tying what looked like a woman’s pink kimono around his waist to cover up and make himself halfway decent. He was an obnoxiously handsome man, with short red hair as deep red as blood. Several tattoos adorned his well built chest, especially one large one that ran from the middle of his pecs down over his abs and underneath the hem of the kimono. There would be a sweet and almost tantalizing aroma in the air the moment he stepped through, raising everyone’s blood pressure a few ticks. Luckily the Prime Sin of Lust was able to pull in his magic before it affected people too quickly, especially since it was Serilda that had called him.

“The lady calls and I come. Hah! Get it? I do hope that needful tinge I heard in your voice means that you and Mythal have considered my offer and -- whoa, where am I? Who are all these people?” Ruzatz was almost completely locked onto Serilda with the swagger he usually exerted before pausing and looking around. He blinked a few times as he stared at the unfamiliar faces and then switched back to the two familiar ones… wait three familiar ones! “Mon!”

"Well if it isn’t my favorite dick of all time,” Monica said, a shit-eating grin crossing her face. She held up a hand to Mercury to put a pause on their conversation before she raced over to Ruzatz and threw herself at him, planting a large and passionate kiss on him.

They wrestled with each other’s mouths for a moment before parting, the tattooed woman giving him a punch in the chest. "What are you doin’ here? Better yet, where’s my wife?”

“Oh she’s… through the portal. Honey, leave Madelyn and Tommy alone for a minute. I think you might want to see this,” Ruzatz called back into the portal as he continued to look around. “Am I at a model convention or something? There are a lot of beautiful people here. Also sorry about that burst of magic when I came through -- I was in the middle of entertaining a couple with my wife and was utilizing my abilities. Don’t worry, just think of a cold shower and everything will be fine. Who are you two?” Ruzatz locked his eyes onto Zifu and Wanda, his charming grin starting to pull onto his face.

But before he could start laying on his usual charm thick and heavy, Mythal broke the oddly circus-like affair by yelling out to the Prime Sin. “Ruzatz! Do not open the portal to Kingdom Darkness and do not let Seri go through!”

If anyone wasn’t sure what Serilda’s plan was yet, it was all out in the open right then and there. Ruzatz was almost completely forgotten by the members of the Order as they turned to Serilda and, all at once, started to talk over one another in an attempt to tell her just how bad of an idea that was. Her anger and royal stance be damned, they knew that such a task was paramount to a suicide mission and they weren’t going to simply let her rush through without talking it over. Chishan and Zifu tried to explain, all at once, that they had time and if this was the best method,  they would coordinate with her but they couldn’t have anyone running in lone wolf style. She certainly looked ready for war, with her weapons drawn and her intent sharp and clear.

But ironically, it was Ruzatz that broke the yelling by putting his fingers in his mouth and releasing a sharp whistle. All at once the room fell silent as he glanced around, his humorous and jovial mood gone and replaced with something more sober and serious. “Let’s all take a moment and take a breath, okay?” he told everyone, making sure to look at each individual face so that they understood him clearly. After he had done that, he focused on Serilda. “Serilda, I don’t know what’s going on here. I’m going to guess that these guys are… probably with the Order of Souls, considering Monica is here. And I’m not sure what you want with going back to Kingdom Darkness but I imagine it isn’t anything good. But even if I was willing to send you back there, I couldn’t. That trick I pulled the last time to get you there was my one trick shot. No doubt Faera knows that I was the one that broke through her defenses and has filled in the gap that I used. I wouldn’t be able to find another one in the next decade, let alone as quickly as you’d want one. I’m sorry but getting to Kingdom Darkness without permission is a no go.” He made sure to explain himself carefully and slowly, wanting her to truly hear the words he was saying. Even he could tell the look in her eye wasn’t the same glimmer that usually lived in her bright blues. “Now how about you tell me what’s going on and I can see what other way I can help?”
