Single Target Spells Empty Single Target Spells

Post by Brynn 10th April 2019, 7:46 pm

So, lets talk about single target spells. To me, I feel as though they're one of the most underpowered spells in my opinion, and I have yet to use one after a year on the server. What I find most underpowered about the spell is that it has nothing really special to it. It has range, but multitarget spells have range as well, meaning they can hit more targets than single target spells can, while being able to have good range to. You could say that ranged spells deal more damage than multitarget ones, but burst spells deal the same amount of damage as single target ones do. So, it makes it really hard to use this spell, when there are just so many better choices. But I suggest that we give single target spells a lot more damage than they have right now. Maybe instead, 150%, to make it feel more like you are sniping enemies down, instead of having it be that you need to use that ability just because the enemy is just out of range of a better spell. I understand not everyone likes stats, but this could also be a good lore thing for statless as well, to have characters who don't want to be in on the front line action deal a lot of damage from far away. But anyways, its fine if no one agrees. Just wanted to share! :)

Single Target Spells Empty Re: Single Target Spells

You looked at the range and damage of a single target spell, but did you look at the speeds? Aside from Normal H Rank, all of the Single Target speeds are identical to the ranges. Therefore, you kind of forgot to mention that Single Target spells are going to hit their target pretty much instantly. The only time this would not happen is if someone buffed their stats incorrectly and unevenly or if they were debuffed. This makes them incredibly hard to dodge spells unless someone has the reaction skills and prophecy powers of a god. As far as PvP goes, someone could theoretically set up their character to combat those speeds, but it's not going to be the average person doing that, and certainly not enough people to warrant buffing an entire spell category since everything should be able to be countered in some way. As far as PvE goes, you're going to hit whatever (or not hit) you want to in whatever way you want regardless.

While Burst spell ranges are also identical to their speeds, they do their full damage because they sacrifice the higher ranges of other spell categories to do so. You also mention Multi-Target spells, which sill have lower range and speed than Single Target ones do. Plus, their ranges and speeds differ from one another which means they can be dodged and reacted to a lot easier. In those aspects they are still weaker than Single Target spells. Sure they can hit multiple times or multiple targets, but what's stopping you from spamming spells in a PvE thread anyway? Or from saying that Single Target spell obliterated everything in its path? In PvP, you're not very likely to get dozens of hits on someone or even hit everything such as their summons or pets. It's at the discretion of those in that battle so the power of Multi-Target spells in those instances is debatable since they can be abused so easily.

For your suggestion of "sniping" enemies from the backlines this can already be done in various ways without buffing the damage of Single Target as a whole. Or a person can do that for that particular spell if they have a sufficient downside just like they could back when we had strengths and weaknesses. If you set the standard at a flat 150% then you're going to next have people wanting to hit 200% damage with and without downsides.

IMO, there is nothing wrong with Single Target spells. If they feel underwhelming to you then it's probably because you didn't build your character up to use them or it just isn't your style. This doesn't mean they need to be buffed. I myself have used them, even in my highest tiers of H+, and I do not feel that they are any less powerful than my other spell categories. I suggest if you want that 150% that you make a spell with a charge system since apparently those are a thing again, or have a sufficient downside for that extra damage. Or, since multiple spell categories are a thing now you can just combine single target with another category at the cost of an effect. Be creative. I'm honestly not going to complain if they are buffed, but I really don't think it's needed at all. *Shrugs*

150% was just a random percentage I put out there, but I see what you mean. I just never really saw it to be something that was as strong as the other spells. Like I said though, just my opinion. Thought it could use a tiny buff though since every single spell besides single target can deal damage to multiple enemies, I thought it’d be nice to have this ability to be stronger since it only targets one. Also, if you look at the scaling, a single target spell could kill in one hit with enough buffs, but if you really need that many buffs for one spell, then it just doesn’t feel right when you could do the same with multi target and kill crowds of people over just one.

(This is my main account btw for people who look into this thread and don’t know)

I think Sami already said everything that needed to be said on this topic and I agree entirely. Single Target spells have their distinct place within the balance of spell types, being the type of spell with the most base speed, range, and damage at the cost of only being able to hit a single person, which isn't even necessarily true anymore with multi-type spells. Singe Target spells already are, as you have said, the "sniper" type spells, which can, with a few buffs in the right places, be turned into exactly what you have in mind. As it stands, and this is my opinion, there is nothing wrong with the current balance concerning ST spells, and it is unlikely to change.
