Re: City of the Undead
-Silent Cemetery-
Leona landed her griffin just outside the gates to Silent Cemetery and dispelled it. Lately it seemed like she could not stay away from this place. She had performed at least four jobs in this area over her career. This would be her fifth job in the region. Today she was here for both a job and a personal reason.
Leona wanted to find out what had happened to Kasim's home village because she wanted to fulfill his last wish to be cremated there. However, she could not do so if zombies were still prowling the area. But before she could even think about fulfilling his last wish, first she had to investigate the city he had sought shelter in before ending up at the Abandoned Cabin.
A full moon hovered in the sky and the howling wind whipped her hair. Leona was not concerned about what was ahead because the night was her ally. It had been ever since she had left Nebdoui two years ago and was blessed by Luna. She walked away from the cemetery gates and followed an old wooden sign that pointed the way to a city in the region called Fulci.
-On the outskirts of Fulci-
Leona was glad that she had worn her green-and-gold outfit because it protected her from the cold night. It was cold in the area because of the constantly blowing wind and lack of cover. The blonde ignored that and pressed on until she spotted abandoned buildings in the distance. Leona checked her gear before going in.
Leona wore her backpack, Argent Gloves, and carried her Nightshade Machete. On her right hip was a black rectangular side pouch containing twelve anti-curse potions, each potion bottle secured in its own compartment and the interior protected by an anti-shock lining to reduce the chance of them breaking. She had bought them before going to Silent Cemetery because she would be traveling alone in zombie territory. It was prudent to spend the money on potions to avoid being turned into a zombie. Since she was a Guild Master, she had to behave more responsibly than a normal guild member.
After checking her supplies, Leona walked into Fulci. She thought that she saw a shadow flit between buildings. In Silent Cemetery, a quick-moving shadow was not something to ignore.

Re: City of the Undead
-Inside Fulci-
Leona walked through the deserted city streets and marveled at the oppressive silence that was broken only by the howling wind. Everywhere she looked there was no sign of activity of any kind. There were no signs of looting or vandalism, no signs of animal activity, nothing. What could have caused this to happen? It was her job to find out.
The blonde walked up to a deserted house with a wooden door left wide open and peered inside. The foyer looked normal enough, but then she spotted dried bloodstains on a staircase leading up to the next floor. There was a bloody handprint on the bottom of the railing that had long since dried, but she understood the implication all too well. Something had crawled its way up... or had crawled down. Leona looked down and saw dried bloodstains near where she was standing; they led outside into the street.
Leona spotted a shadow flicker in the house. She thought about going in to investigate, but overruled it because getting trapped inside a house with zombies was not a good idea. She kept walking and eventually came across a small store with a broken display window and a lot of bloodstains on the sidewalk. Judging from the sports equipment scattered about within, it was a sporting goods store. Further evidence was given by a mannequin wearing a black-and-white striped referee shirt lying just outside the store.
Leona peered inside and saw more dried blood within, including some on the jagged remnants of the window itself. It looked like something hauled itself over the glass... or threw itself through. Either way, something had smashed the window and had helped itself to the customers within the sporting goods store. A lot of somethings, to be exact. She spotted at least seven blood trails that flowed over the window and onto the floor, where drag marks then started.
Leona could only imagine what nightmare played out in the store. Bent metal baseball bats and bent golf clubs lying on the floor indicated that some of the customers attempted to defend themselves. However, those makeshift weapons were simply not enough.
Leona walked away from the empty store and made her way to the town square. She saw empty cars with broken windows, more ruined storefronts, and even a totaled passenger bus with a bloodstained cabin and windows with bloody handprints on the inside. Leona paused in place as she spotted another shadow darting behind a vegetable stand displaying wares that had long since putrefied.
She waited to see if anything would happen. When nothing did, she continued following the trail of destruction to its end. Leona found herself standing outside a large wrought-iron fence and took a breath. There was only one place left in Fulci to go to search for clues... the city cemetery.

Re: City of the Undead
-Outside Fulci Cemetery-
Leona pushed in the gates to the cemetery in order to begin her search and found that they yielded to her without any problems. She walked into the hallowed grounds and found that there were a lot of freshly upturned graves. There were also a lot of ominously open crypts and caskets. Leona was uncertain whether the long-deceased residents of the cemetery reanimated or if it was the recently deceased who reanimated... she decided to search for more clues to get the full story behind events.
She carefully walked down the main path in the cemetery, walking past rows of well-maintained tombstones and keeping an eye out for trouble. She saw more shadows in the distance, where she also spotted a single-story square building with a light barely visible behind a curtained window. The mage weighed her options... after a brief pause, she opted to take a chance and began making her way towards that building.
-Inside the building-
Leona entered the building to find that it was the cemetery caretaker's residence. It was a small residence with a single bed that was carefully made up and a clean wooden desk with a small blue journal sitting on it. It was opened to a page with a hastily scrawled note that was dated to three months ago.
"I buried Old Man Henderson just yesterday. He died of old age at 80 years old. Just an hour ago I saw his grave open and he stepped out of the grave. I don't know what's going on. It seems like the recently deceased are coming back to life." It read.
Just below it was another scrawled note written just hours later. The time of the entry was the same day, but just after midnight.
"Graves are opening everywhere! The graves belong to those who just died, but we had thirty people die in the last week. Car accidents, old age, falls from high places, the cause of death doesn't matter. They're coming back. I've gotta get outta here!" The note read. After that there was nothing to read. She did not know whether the lack of additional information was good or bad, but it was definitely cause for concern. So was a scraping noise coming from just outside the house. Leona spied another shadow in the distance.
Leona left the house and went back outside to determine what the shadow belonged to.

Re: City of the Undead
-Inside Fulci Cemetery-
Leona exited the caretaker's house and got back onto the main path in the cemetery. She spotted a man-sized shadow lurching in the distance. It appeared to be moving quickly in her direction. She also heard moaning coming from around her, so she drew her machete. It was time to fight.
Leona looked down and spotted a quintet of zombies missing their lower halves crawling towards her. They were dressed in tattered burial clothing and were all badly decomposed. She could handle them with ease.
Leona threw a Fast Ball at the head of each zombie and made them explode like overripe melons. The blonde turned away from the now-really-dead zombies and turned back towards the shadow in the distance. It was a muscular zombie that was running right at her! Leona was hit and thrown back by the impact of the tackle, landing right next to a headstone. She heard moaning nearby and spotted another quintet of half-zombies crawling towards her... one was already close enough to grab her right foot.
The blonde recoiled as she pulled away her foot and quickly got up just as another zombie grabbed for her hair. She kicked all of their heads off in a macabre game of soccer and turned back to the burly zombie. It was charging towards her again, so she quickly cast a Crescent Cutter that hit it in the chest and split it in half. Carried by momentum, its severed left side flew right by her, causing the blonde to shriek as the body careened past.
The blonde's ordeal was far from over. She spotted five light purple ghosts approximately six feet tall floating towards her. More zombies were gathering behind her, so Leona had to deal with the ghosts quickly. A quick Wind Blast and the ghosts dissipated with only a scream to mark their passing. The zombies behind her had now gotten within striking distance, so she began disposing of the crawling dead.
Five swift kicks to the head later and they were now headless corpses. Leona heard moaning in the distance and spotted four more of the burly zombies along with an entirely new zombie. The new one had pale skin and hair and was disturbingly thin. It unleashed a chilling wail and five more of the half-zombies came out of the ground beside it. Leona was going to have her work cut out for her.

Re: City of the Undead
Leona wanted to wrap this up quick before she was overwhelmed by sheer numbers, so she calmed down and focused on the familiar chant.
"O FABLED HARPIES, O SISTERS THREE! LEND YOUR STRENGTH UNTO ME!" Leona thought. Her harpies appeared and took wing.
"So, looks like another fight, huh?" Sylvia asked.
"Yep." Daphne commented dryly.
"You know the drill." Sandy chimed in.
"Attack those zombies!" Leona ordered. The trio dutifully took flight and gained altitude. In the meantime, Leona aimed and fired a Wind Bullet at the pale zombie's head, but to her surprise it did not connect with the intended target. That was because one of the muscular zombies got in the way and took the bullet instead, its head exploding in a shower of red mush. Leona had never seen that behavior in zombies before.
"KILL! KILL... HER!" The pale zombie rasped while pointing its talons at her. The remaining two muscular zombies sprinted towards her and the five zombies crawled to the attack. The harpies dove on the crawling zombies as Leona used another Crescent Cutter on the first charging zombie. It lost its right arm but kept charging. Leona simply fired a Crescent Wave to finish the zombie off... it collapsed and remained face-down on the ground.
The second muscular zombie hit Leona with a shoulder tackle and knocked her to the ground right in front of a tombstone, narrowly avoiding hitting her head on the stone. Leona saw five ghosts hovering in front of her, so she defeated them all with a Wind Blast before contending with the buff zombie. She aimed and fired a Gale Cannon at its head, turning the burly zombie into another headless corpse.
Leona finally stood up just to see the pale zombie running at her with inhuman speed. It slashed her across the stomach and right forearm before she could knock it back with a Mach Jab to the face. It recovered and pressed its attack, grappling with her and attempting to bite her neck with several wild lunges at her throat. Leona kicked it away from her, but it rushed at her again and slashed at her neck.
Leona ducked, then popped up and hit back with a Mach Straight to the chest. It fell down but quickly climbed to its feet and renewed its assault on the blonde, slashing her across the stomach again before pouncing on her and knocking her to the ground. Leona shielded herself with her Argent Gloves as it began slashing wildly at her. It scored three hits to her arms before the harpies arrived and pulled it off of her with their talons.
"DIE!" it rasped as it was lifted into the air, its arms still swinging at her. Leona's stomach was cut and bleeding, but she had a chance to finish the fight. She had better hurry because more zombies were arriving at the cemetery gates.
"Drop it head-first onto the ground!" Leona verbally instructed, clutching her bleeding stomach with her left hand. The harpies lifted it and were about to drop it when it struggled and broke free, dropping onto the ground and landing on its feet without breaking anything. Leona groaned. She lifted a finger and fired another Wind Bullet, hitting it squarely in the head as it charged at her.
Its headless body pitched forward in mid-run and it slid right up to her feet before stopping. Leona turned her attention to the other zombies piling in and noticed that they too had all died. Had the pale zombie been controlling all the others? She had a feeling that was the case because she did not encounter any more live zombies as she retraced her steps through the cemetery and through Fulci city. Eventually she found a notebook in an empty ambulance that had belonged to the coroner... it had a list of fatalities that happened just before the city was turned into a necropolis.
Maybe reading through it would provide a clue as to how the undead came about to start with. Leona decided that could wait until she was back at the guild hall. She had had enough of Silent Cemetery for one job.
She dispelled the harpies and patched herself up. She called her griffin and mounted it, ignoring the stomach pain she was experiencing. A few seconds later and she was on her way to the guild hall to recover from the encounter with the pale zombie.
