    Episode 13:
    Setting a Standard

    Spoiler:
So this is what it was like to be a C-Rank Wizard?

Surprisingly it didn't feel much different than when he was D-Rank. There was a bit more fame to it he supposed, not that he yearned for such a thing. There was the possibility of refining his magical power into new spells. He desperately needed that. Eliot sighed as he leaned back on the bench located in the Pegasus Gardens.

This had easily become his favorite spot in all of Clover Town. It was refreshing, it was peaceful and it gave him time to think. He could come here after a job and wind down, sort through his thoughts. It did get lonely at times and he wished he could bring more people here to visit with him. Lei would have gotten bored quickly though, along with Slade. They were fighters and longed to get into scuffles. And then-...

Did he actually know anyone else? He blinked in surprise. He had joined the guild with at least five other people and he had only gone on jobs with two of them. Had he really not gotten to know the others? He could barely remember their names. He had joined Blue Pegasus to make friends and to become allies with other wizards and he had only gone out of his way to meet two of them! That was unacceptable.

"I'll go find one right now!" He stated firmly, getting to his feet in a hurry. He marched out of the gardens and into the main hall, where the job board was. He quickly skimmed it, looking for a job. It was there that the messenger from the Magic Council found him.

"Excuse me young man, I'm looking for a team of wizards that could take on an important task for the Magic Council. Do you happen to know of such a team?" The man asked hurriedly.

Eliot blinked in surprise. An important task? That was just too curious to ignore. He was a wizard afterall. He just needed...

He spotted Zhi and reacted without thinking. "You found one! Me and this guy are Blue Pegasus wizards and we'd love to help out!" The Dragon Slayer said, running over to stand beside the armored man.

C-Rank wasn't exactly all it was cracked up to be. In fact, one could say that it was quite a boring evolution in his career as a mage. It only took a handful of jobs for him to make it to this tier, and he wasn't exactly getting a lot of profit from it either. He sighed out, shrugging it off for the moment. He just had to hope that his translation into B-Rank would be a more rigorous test for his skills. He came to this guild to become even stronger and protect his allies, after all. He might as well challenge his limits if he was going to pursue such a goal.

He took his blade out of its sheath and began to balance it by the hilt, looking over the darkened metal. It was actually made of a meteorite that crashed near his village. As far as he knew, it was the only weapon made from the rock. The blade was a unique beast in itself, but it did not receive a name just yet. This was the same blade that absorbed the blood of his very parents. He didn't think such a deadly creature deserved to be called something until it redeemed itself.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a short, blond teen approaching him with a pep in his step. Zhi offered a smile as he moved from his sitting position. "We joined together, right..? The name's Zhi. You said someone needed some help?" The samurai returned his dark blade to its sheath as he approached the messenger, his armor clanking with each step as he grinned. "What's the job say we have to do? Me and this guy will take it on, no matter what. Blue Pegasus is all about it!"

    Episode 13:
    Setting a Standard

The messenger was quite surprised. Here he had expected to find a grouping of powerful wizards, divine in their stature and elegant in their form. It was his first mission for the Magic Council and he had so been looking forward to meeting famous wizards from Blue Pegasus, like Zack or Shusei.

Instead he found two odd looking ones. "You two?" He questioned, looking between the two of them. He bent down to examine Eliot, rubbing his chin. "Aren't you a bit short to be a wizard?"

Eliot's eye twitched, right along with his grin. There was only a moment before he reacted...or overreacted as it would be. "My height has nothing to do with my magical power I am a Blue Pegasus wizard that is capable of taking on any job no matter the danger!" He yelled, pumping his arms angrily into the air like an animated character.

The messenger chuckled uncomfortably and held his hands up. "Sorry! I was just expecting...never mind. The Magic Council needs your help." He reached into his pouch and pulled out a small scroll, neatly tied with a purple ribbon. He freed it and unraveled it so that he could read it. "The Magic Council has discovered a powerful wizard that has proven to be dangerous. Reports have placed her right in the heart of a massive guild genocide and countless other crimes. They are formally requesting that Blue Pegasus aid in the capture or destruction of this dangerous mage."

Eliot crossed his arms over his chest. "Capture or destruction? They want us to kill her?" He asked, displeased.

The messenger nodded. "It's not recommended but if it comes to it, they need her murderous ways to stop. If you can't get her locked up, then they want her put into the ground."

The Dragon Slayer tsked. "Tell the Magic Council they'll have a prisoner. I don't deal in killing anyone that can be arrested instead. Neither does Zhi here." He spoke confidently, even though his ally was heavily armored and did carry a sword. Perhaps he was overstepping his bounds.

But he looked at it as he was laying down the law. For the messenger and Zhi, if he didn't agree.

Zhi smiled innocently as he listened to what the messenger had to say. He didn't want to interrupt anything that he might say, but at the same time, a few questions were popping up in the samurai's head. He laughed a bit at the shot at Eliot's height, but he tried his best to keep it to himself. Didn't want to lose an ally right after making one. He heard out the description of their job, and it sounded dangerous, but it also seemed they had the option to kill the wizard responsible for the murders.

Eliot seemed to be extremely above any sort of killing, but Zhi wasn't the exact same. He had taken lives before from a very young age, but it wasn't out of an unnecessary blood lust. He had to for his own survival. While he could not promise anything to the two of them about his feelings on killing this wizard, he could offer some peace of mind. The samurai tapped on the hilt of his blade, smiling softly. "Ultimatum is not permitted to take any lives as long as I wield her. This blade might taste blood, but it will not take the soul from this wizard's body by all means necessary." A name made up on the spot for his weapon, but fitting.

The blade travels along the stream between life and death, offering an ultimatum to those who get in its way. Submit or die. Those were the only options for those unfortunately enough to taste his darkened steel. "If that's all, consider it done. Eliot, it seems like we'll be going on our first job together! Are you as excited as I am?" Zhi slowly moved his fist over to the gap between him and the young wizard, offering to bump fists with him.

    Setting a Standard

Aw man that sword even has a cool name,

The warrior named Zhi was quick and calm to explain not the name of his weapon but its indulgence in violence as well. For a man clad in full armor and looking like he belonged in the middle of a battlefield, Zhi seemed awfully relaxed. Perhaps it was a confidence from having known battle and survived it. Maybe it was just his way of dealing with whatever had happened in his past. Either way Eliot could not tell but he was startled by the man's wanton to follow through his ruling. He hadn't really expected much push back from a man who used his last name as a means of courting ladies but still.

"Very excited!" He said, grinning from ear to ear. When the warrior extended his hand, wrapped into a fist, he wasn't sure if he was punching at him in slow motion or what it was. He'd only been around his parents for so long and they hadn't done anything similar to-

Wait, was it like a high five thing? Maybe he wanted a high five! He knew high fives! Enthusiastically he slapped his iron hand against the man's extended fist, proud of figuring out the purpose of it. Then he quickly retracted it and jabbed a thumb at the door. "I'm going to grab my pack and then I'll meet you at the docks." He said quickly before he took off towards the gardens. He had left all his goods and such right next to the bench, like some kind of rookie. You never know when you'd be called on for action!

He was a blur as he raced past the wooden seat, hand reaching down to grab the knapsack. Then he was bounding down the botanical levels, like a kid racing to the finish. He had barely gotten a chance to talk to Zhi. He couldn't wait to learn all about him!

Clank. Zhi was damned lucky that his gloves were also forged from metal. Any other situation and his hand would have been broken by the supposed high five from Eliot. How the hell could a kid smack so hard? No, of course he could. He was the kid that could chew up pure iron. He was a tough one, for sure. The samurai was glad to have such a powerful companion to travel with. Rubbing his hand softly, he watched as Eliot stormed out of the guild with a bright smile on his face. Such energy was just what Zhi needed in his life.

He followed after Eliot, silently activating his Ethereal Sight. He wasn't able to keep up with the kid, but he was certainly going to keep an eye on where he was headed. He had a little trick he wanted to show off anyway. After he was a ways behind the blonde-haired child, he opened up a portal beside Eliot and another right in front of Zhi. He hopped into it, his body being transported beside Eliot as he landed beside him. His metal boot hit the ground as his teeth showed, a smile tugging at his lips.

"Second to the village treats winner to dinner!" With no other explanation behind his actions, Zhi pushed on the ball of his foot and sprinted forward, slight amounts of dust kicking up from underneath his boots. The armor he was wearing wasn't made for running, and he was very aware of this. However, he wanted to get an idea of how Eliot handled easygoing situations. He was just a kid, after all. No matter how battle-hardened he was or the things he's seen in his past, he had to love a competitive game or two. Zhi knew he did.

    Episode 13:
    Setting a Standard

He ran down the street, eager to begin his journey. His pack was slapped against his back as he went and his smile was as bright as the sun was shining. Another day and another adventure! There was only one thing that was bothering him...

Where is Zhi? I thought he'd be right on my heels, he thought with slight concern. It was possible that the man had gotten ahead of him and was already at the boat. But at the same time he was wearing a lot of armor. That HAD to be wearing him down, right? He should at least be around...well right here! He looked around as he kept running, his brow furrowed. There was no sign of the sword-wielder.

Until a portal popped open next to him. And Zhi leapt out of it.

There were no decipherable words to describe the surprise that overtook the young wizard. But naturally a loud "AHHHHHH!" escaped from his throat as he stumbled to the side and away from the sudden intruder. He tripped over a bucket near a store and fell face first into the ground, skidding along it with his legs splayed in the air.

He barely heard the warrior's challenge as he lay on the ground. As he pried his face from it, a deep red streak ran down the center of his face. He groaned slightly from the pain before he shook his head violently, clearing his vision and daze.

"Wait! I thought we could-..." He called after Zhi before he relented. Prying himself from the ground, he adjusted his pack. "Alright then. Hope you don't mind buying for a Dragon Slayer!" He bellowed and took off, running even faster than he had been going before. He could connect with Zhi at the village; he just had to get there first!

Zhi laughed a bit as Eliot fell over, but he knew this was going to be a competition to the end. He didn't relent as he sprinted through the town and onto the grand trail to the haunted village where their job was. "Ha, you're too slow! You're gonna let a samurai beat you?" However, just as he was looking back to say this, he noticed that the Dragon Slayer was already beginning to catch up with the temporal samurai. How the hell was he able to recover that much ground so fast? No, he couldn't question that right now. If he was going to challenge Eliot, he had to focus everything into his running.

The armor on his body clanked against their folds slightly as his body came up and down. He could feel some of his joints getting sore from the sudden strain. He wasn't used to doing cardio with his armor on. It might actually serve as a good training method if he weren't using his portals and teleportation as his main form of transportation. The only reason he really wanted to run this time was for his slayer friend. Speaking of, the two of them were now neck and neck toward the entrance of the village.

Normally, if Zhi was really pining to win, he would have activated his Release to let his wings come out and gain that small burst of speed needed to outdo his friend. However.. he didn't care that much about winning. It might even be best to save the true extent of his powers for whatever lied on this job. If they were looking for strong mages, and the two of them were only C-Ranks, Zhi had his doubts that this was going to be an open and shut case.

    Episode 13:
    Setting a Standard

His lungs felt like they were on fire.

How long had they been running? Eliot could barely fathom the question as his chest heaved up and down, trying to gather as much air into his burning lungs as possible. If this had been for any other reason, he might have collapsed miles ago. But this was a race to the finish...

A passing sign nearly caused him to stumble again. That was the bar where he had first met Zack. Wait, they were still in Clover Town? How could that possibly be? He glanced over his shoulder and saw the guild building descending behind the town's buildings as they ventured further down. Why did this feel so wrong? Why was it taking them so long to go from the guild to the harbor?

Maybe it was because he had never raced down to the docks before. He generally moved at his own pace and often passed the time by retreating into his mind. Usually he was preparing himself for the boat ride across the lake (though no amount of mental training ever seemed to help). But now that there was a goal and a purpose to getting to the docks quickly, it felt like they had run halfway across Fiore.

Both he and Zhi were neck and neck, each one patting the ground in a rushed effort to get ahead. Despite his age, the Dragon Slayer ran rather well. If only his body wouldn't punish him for trying so hard! The entrance to the town was drawing near and the smell of the lake was already creeping into his nostrils. If he wanted to claim victory, he had to do something drastic and now!

"Sorry Zhi, but a Dragon Slayer uses every trick he has!" He said gleefully. And then his arm transformed into a pole and extended, launching him up and forward. He was laughing as he soared into the air, only feet away from claiming victory...

When he crashed into the welcome banner that hung just above the exit to the docks. It spun him around once and locked around his midsection, his limbs splayed out from the crevices. He tried to wriggle himself free by waving each limb but found that he had tied himself up fairly neat.

It also gave Zhi the perfect opening to win.
