“Unfortunately, it seems that Maker may not have been wholly lying.”
It had been several days since the climactic battle with the rogue Terran, the rogue Rhaegarian and the salvation of the lost souls of Teras Prime. The injuries had varied depending on the person, with Scourge -- the now newly named Cedric -- having suffered the worst of it outside of the loss of Genesis. Rest was given to those that needed and one after the other, people began to get up and return to their duties. Saffron was the last to wake and she was given a whole day to recover and regain her strength before it was decided that a debriefing meeting was needed. Everyone had a lot of questions and concerns for the future and it was best to just tackle them all in one meeting with everyone present.
They had ventured to someone other than New Rhaegar for once. Though they had broken the news of Genesis to Dina early on, it still felt right to keep her in the know of what was happening. After all, the homunculus had made the ultimate sacrifice to help them defeat Maker and it seemingly had been agreed upon beforehand that should he return to Earthland from his containment by either Grubar or Hosrius, he would still be offered a seat in their unnamed alliance. Now that he was gone, it only made sense that Dina take up his place, as she would now be the one in charge of O Palácio Flutuante. The group had offered to come to see her, so she wouldn’t be forced to always be the one coming to them. That and it felt right to accompany her in a place that most likely constantly reminded her of Genesis, as both an emotional burden and reprieve. Castelo Nas Nuvens had a shocking amount of meeting rooms, though that should have been unsurprising given the sheer amount of shady characters they used to deal with. A fair number of them had been renovated into more… enjoyable rooms but there were still a handful for official meetings of staff.
One such room was chosen for the meeting, dimly lit by ceiling lights that hung low and over the glass table. Two out of the four walls were made up completely of windows, looking out at the rest of the casino. The evening sky was creeping in, only a thin line of light where the sun had set on the horizon. Several of the other entertainment buildings rose up all around, fully lit up for the entertaining evening that awaited its visitors. The same group that had met prior to the missions had gathered in the room, extra seats having been brought in to accommodate everyone. Blade had opted to start the meeting and his news was starting out… troubling.
“What does that mean?” Mythal asked, his brow furrowed in confusion.
“You will recall what he told Mercury in his attempt to sway her clone to his side. How Teras Prime had been preparing for galactic domination and was using him to fuel their war machine. Halcyon explained it to me a bit and I was able to verify all of it with Knowhere. Though they prefer to go by… Teras now.” The blademaster reached into his pocket and extracted a small diamond, just large enough to fit in the palm of his hand. He manipulated it up to his fingers and then flicked it with his thumb, sending it flipping into the air. It spun up and came down before just about halfway to the floor, it came to a stop and righted itself. It hummed and exuded a blue glow that began to take form and structure. Light poured out of it and took the shape of a humanoid wearing a blue, glowing suit. The head was seemingly made of some kind of code, though it was written in runes and symbols that most if any would be able to decipher. It also lacked eyes and a mouth. The top half of the head wasn’t fully constructed in its usual place, floating up above and fracturing into different segments. These pieces flowed up like a waterfall in reverse, dissipating as they reached the top of the ‘crown’.
Teras reached up to adjust its tie before it relaxed. “Good evening everyone,” it greeted them all, its voice seemingly made up of different tones that echoed together in a soft harmony.
“What in the hell…?” Mythal asked, sitting forward. “I thought they were in some kind of… massive device.”
“They were,” Quentin said as he materialized into existence beside the Darkness Slayer. “But the construction of Knowhere was meant to house the consciousnesses of the Terran people, not everything combined together. It wouldn’t have survived the mass insertion of spiritual energy. Luckily, thanks to Khelben’s efforts,” he said, nodding to the other Xocili. “I was able to bring them together. That didn’t solve the matter of where to keep them. Luckily I’ve been studying a lot of the technology that exists in this timeline, now that I’m out and about in the world. And through that same ritual, I was able to create this.” He gestured to the crystal and, by extension, the digital figure standing before them.
“I thought you were like… givin’ them their own individuality. This looks like one guy.”
“See, that’s what I thought,” Lux said before he’d even fully materialized, leaning against the table. “Imagine my surprise the first time I saw roboghost appear here.”
“There was a discussion about that but this was the conclusion the Terran people came up with. They are still individuals but they are all part of a collective now. They are as alive as any spirit can be and their souls and consciousnesses have been brought together in harmony. They have their own individual thoughts and feelings but they felt that Knowhere was… rather useful, if unrefined. With their souls attached, it’s less like a thinking computer and more like a colony of people working together to provide information and answer questions.”
“I was… confused at first too. I still am, if I’m being honest,” Blade said, glancing at the figure. “But it is what my people wanted; they told me that themselves. And Halcyon reiterated that fact. They seemed to believe that a collective consciousness was a part of their natural evolution.”
“Something we would have achieved had our greed not gotten the best of us,” Teras spoke up finally. “What Raeran told you is true; the one that came to call himself Maker had a far more complicated story than he let on. He painted himself as a victim and he was not entirely incorrect. We recognized his brilliance early on, far superior to any that came before, which was a marvel considering our latent evolution to have superior intellects. We knew that he would be our means to pushing our world beyond the limited scope we had settled into. His parents were compensated for allowing us to test their child from an early age. He learned quickly, not just in his lessons but in what he believed his worth was. Results; he saw the reactions we gave for successes or failures and sought the approval of those around him. Unfortunately, our infrastructure was infected with desire to expand and rather than cultivating him like a proper child, he was viewed a means to an end.”
Blade’s gaze dropped slightly as Teras continued. “We created what this planet would define as a sociopath. And as he grew, he created a facade to trick us into believing he was going with our plans. Halcyon and Raeran spoke of this to us but we didn’t listen, happy to be rich and proud of a son that was going to elevate the Terran people beyond their wildest dreams. So blinded were we that we never stopped to consider he would be plotting against us. We never suspected, right up until he activated his device and absorbed our world into himself.”
“So yer people didn’t listen to reason and Maker took advantage of your blindness…” Mythal said, scoffing slightly. “Sounds a bit like what happened to the Dread Masters.”
“And many others. Maker was quite adept at charming people and allowing him to get in close. But as Patricia rightly assumed, that was because we, like the Rhaegarians, have some form of Blood Marker.”
“Yes, except ours evolved in a different direction. Maker asked about it once he had discovered the Rhaegarians, noticing a similar structure in the genetic make up of himself and the prisoners he had detained. He theorized that the Terrans had a similar trait and wondered why it hadn’t surfaced in a similar manner to the Rhaegarian people. We lacked the capacity to deduce accordingly but once we were joined, we had time to convene over the matter. And though we lack evidence, we believe our heightened intellect is due to our ‘Blood Markers’. And Maker’s was different, perhaps the first of our people that was.”
“Yes, I believe Professor had theorized that his Blood Marker had something to do with the manipulation of people. That his innate charm wasn’t just that but in fact heightened in an almost… seductive manner,” Patricia spoke up.
Teras nodded. “He called it… ‘Perfect World’. His lies weren’t just charming by themselves but instead influenced a person’s viewpoint on things. Raeran spoke of a meeting between Vandrad du Wolff, Mercury Arseneault and Maker himself. Each of them saw a different version of Maker at the same time. He could manipulate a person’s viewpoint, their thoughts, to see truth in his words. And he found that it spread to others through secondary contact. Though it seems it didn’t affect Vandrad du Wolff.” Teras’ head shifted slightly, looking in the future king’s direction.
“So… when we had that meetin’ about what she’d found and all of us were suddenly feelin’ sympathetic to the guy?” Mythal asked.
“Undoubtedly an infection point. Mercury had inadvertently transferred it to us,” Patricia explained, looking to Teras for confirmation.
“Indeed. But the moment that the truth, the real one, was provided to those infected, it broke the manipulation. I believe there is a magic on your world called Charm that operates in a similar fashion. The target is charmed until they realize they’ve been charmed. Most likely, this is the reason that the Terran people were taken in by him and never once considered him a threat. Though for one reason or another, Halcyon and Raeran warning us didn’t break the manipulation. A very curious predicament, one that Maker himself wasn’t able to figure out before he perished.”
