Hear the devil calling, hear the devil caaaallling. Well I hear the devil calling, better pay for what he's due. I can't stop, the dogs of war. I can't stop, the dogs of war.
A little hum she sung as Gladiia rode the single horse carriage through the mountain pass. It was colder that day, the cloak she wore did well to block some of the cold winds from hitting her. She was doing a favor for Sir Mammon, personally delivering a shipment of "goods" since word was caravans had a nasty habit of losing their cargo out here. Could be wolves, could be the cold, or rumor has it, it's the plumed serpent behind the issues. Of course, she was no fool, she already knew since entering the pass that she was being watched. She soon would find out the truth.
And the truth came by not a few minutes later, two figures stepped out of cover as they glared over at her. She stopped her cart for them, and they began to flank both sides of the wagon. The one on her left was holding two daggers, one in each hand. Trench coat and baggy clothes as he seemed to wade his way to her then the other. Said other was wearing a regular wear, but was horribly ragged. Not to mention the man himself looked like a crumbling mountainside, teeth certainly leaving as well. It was the trench coat to speak first, his breath heavy as he spoke.
"Hey! You need to pay to get through here! Or you'l loose your life!"
"Oh sir? I beg your pardon, I never heard of any toll here. For what reason sir?" Gladiia replied with a polite and reserved tone. The trench coat merely gave a crooked smile, "Cause the defiler said so, part of the fearsome pumed serpent!"
"Plumed serpent." The older man said in response, then changed his attention back to gladiia. "Were not to be messed with lady. Play nice and we'l let you walk away. Now get off the carriage, nice and slow." Gladiia merely nodded and got off as slow as he wanted. She then was ushered a little bit away as more figures emerged from the rocks, two more. One had a striking similarity to the ragged man, though he was in more well kept clothes and wielding a large Warhammer. The other appeared to be a teen girl with pigtails and a wide smile. "What goodies we got this time!" She shouted as she hurried to the back of the carriage. The warhammer man made a nod to the defiler, who joined the teen. After, he made his way to the ragged one, looking up and down gladiia.
"Well, bad day for you eh?" The warhammer quipped, then looked to the ragged man. "Tell me bro, do you think she would be worth something?" The ragged man looked at his bro and raised a eyebrow, "Before or after were done with her?" The two then laughed, then stopped as Gladiia showed no response to the comment. Before anything else could be said, a voice broke through. "Hey!" The young teen's voice shouted out. "Their ain't anything in here but empty boxes! Big ones but empty!" The two men looked at each other at the news and then turned back to Gladiia. "What's the meaning of this?!" The ragged man demanded, and gladiia gave a small smile. "Oh sir, I was here to pick up a delivery from plumed serpent. Heard that their was a group copying us here you see." Her naked hand exposed from under the cloak, revealing the noticeable tattoo.
The two men didn't have time to realize the error of their ways before she threw her cloak at the two, whipping out her spear to be at the ready. The clubbed man swung out wildly at the sudden move, which she parried with her spear and delivered a solid blow to his head with a whack. This stunned him as the bigger brother came rushing forward. He swung, and it passed through her? He watched with confusion as her body took the appearance of a white grey mist, being able to see right through her. He swung again, the blow passing through again as she delivered a sudden blow with her spear. The ragged man recovered in time to see his brother carried off by a twister 10 meters in the air before colliding with a side of the mountain, him suddenly falling to the floor with a thud. The ragged man turned to the one who had did the crime, and found two balls of steam to greet him. His skin peeled and reddened from the blows before falling to the ground face first, not getting back up.
Gladiia merely looked over the two brothers, both down on the ground. She was going to turn to the mountain tops before feeling a rock going through her. She turned to see the young girl, a look of anger and fear on her face. The defiler, brave lad he was, standing behind her with both knives at the ready. "Stupid wind bitch! Leo's the best wind mage here!" Gladiia, realizing the error, turned too late in time as the blade of wind collided with her. She felt the blow wash over her, the cut still hurting but not as bad as it could had been. She scanned her surroundings to no avail.
Lets bring you out shall we. She suddenly disappeared in a gust of wind as the next wind blade hit the ground, gladiia herself now between the remaining two. Before they could act, she spout out a cloud of steam that quickly engulfed the two. Hot steam scalded their skin and both yelled out in pain and agony. Gladiia merely poked and prodded the two blinded fools, they screamed and cried in frustration and pain as they swung out widely. Then finally they both screamed for help, out for this "leo". Gladiia didn't have to wait long for her trap to be sprung, a viscous wind blew through the canyon blowing the steam cloud away. Their in front of the three of them was this leo, a mage with long straggly black hair and a purple cloak, a hastily painted guild symbol of the plumed serpent on the front of his cloak.
"You dare challenge us?! The true plumed serpent?!!" He spat at gladiia. She merely tilted her head at the question. "I would hardly call this rag tag group guild members of my organization ser. Especially with how these two are." "Just wait until leo thrashes you!" "He's the guild leader for a reason!" The girl and defiler said in order, which actually made Gladiia chuckle. Leo responded with a sudden slash of his wind at her. She inhaled reflexively, ready to dodge. Instead to the surprise of all the wind blade suddenly collapsed and spiraled into gladiia's mouth! Gladiia coughed at the surprise intruder, all were motionless by the sudden display, long enough for warhammer to swing at gladiia from behind.
The hammer passed through, and for his efforts he found himself without a head. Blood spurted out from the open wounded that her spear cleanly cut through. Running on pure instinct, she moved forward to where she ended up behind leo. Shook from his stupor, he swung out with a fierce barrage of wind blades. Without thinking gladiia barged through each blow, finding each blow to hurt her less as she got hurt more. In his face now, she sent him flying into the air with a twister. He corrected himself and banished the winds aside, suspending himself in the air. She rose up in a updraft to reach him and grappled him. Their was a brief struggle before Gladiia gained the upper hand, and threw him down from the air. She uplifted herself with another updraft before launching bolt after bolt of steam. Grounded, leo took hit after hit before suddenly unleashing a torrent of wind blowing the two standing groupies away by it. Gladiia quickened step through it, passing through as wind back to the ground across from him.
"Face it! I am helping your pathetic guild by robbing the weaklings who come by!" Leo began, his robes having noticeable tears and blood staining from the wounds. "The plumed serpent is hardly talked about in the news! At least were reminding them you should be feared!"
"Is that how you see it? You rob the weak so you can help spread fear?" Gladiia mused, then shook her head. "No leo, I think you rob the weak because their easy pickings. Using my guild's name is merely aid towards that end. This is why we have to kill you, we can't afford everyone seeing us as weak."
That struck a nerve with leo, it was plain to see as he tore off his cloak, revealing runes on his leather armor. They all glowed as he put his hands together and a rune appeared in front of him. "I leo represent the coldest of wind! The mightiest of storms! And you, like all others will be blown away!" With his battle cry, he launched his spell, a sudden torrent of grey winds similar to her own rage spell. And with that, the battle was over.
With a flick of her hand, the winds suddenly dispersed before reaching her, the noticeable stop was evident in the ground as it carved a path a couple of meters deep. Leo was absolutely slack jawed at the display, and only watched as Gladiia walked up to him. "Now, you lost. Shall I kill you or take you prisoner ser?" Leo looked numbly at her and back down at the ground. He held his down before beginning to sob. "I...I...I want to live." he managed after a minute. Gladiia nodded and ushered him to the back of the carriage. She looked over at the remaining two hiding behind some rocks and beckoned them over. They grudgingly did so, looking more like children caught doing something they shouldn't have then actual adults.
"You three will find a box for each of you, the remaining one is where I put the other two. Do so quickly, and you will yet live for another day." she instructed, and the three followed her orders. A half hour would then pass, comprised of gathering the corpses of the brothers and reclaiming her horse that had rightly guessed this whole mess was something it did not want any part in. She sighed before getting back on the carriage, and ushered the horse forward. A voice quipped up from the box, the heavy breathing suggesting it to be the defiler. "What kind of delivery were you making with empty boxes?" He asked timidly. Gladiia replied curtly. "I have a associate at the guild who requested volunteers for his experiments. Said that the group impersonating us in these mountains would be more then happy to make this happen." "And if we don't want to?" The girl piped in, to which gladiia merely responded. "You don't have a choice."
"But that's not fair! I don't want to be part of these experiments if I don't know what they are!"
"Tell me, did those you robbed and killed wanted to have those horrible things happen to them? Did they say no and you let them go?"
Silence was her response, before heavy spoke up, "It's not fair! We were stronger and take what we want! It's how it's pose to be!"
"Of course it is," Gladiia agreed, "The strong should take what they want because they have the power to do so. And I, stronger then the five of you, am taking you where I want you to go. Now I'll ask you sirs and madams not to spoil yourselves on our ride, gary hates to receive unclean cargo." Gladiia sighed after a few minutes, detecting that the defiler had likely lived up to his name despite her warning. She distracted herself from the sounds of prayers and begging as she continued her humming.
See the fields burning. See the fields burning. Yeah I see the fields burning, cause hell is coming through. And I can't stop, the dogs of war. I can't stop, the dogs of war.
