Welcome to the Exam Grind! Please Read Below Before Beginning!!

Hello everyone! In light of the Event that just finished and Grind Parties that have been a huge success so far, we have a bunch of people ranking up at once! So why not also grind out our exams under one uniform prompt?

All you need to make sure of is that you have received something personal plot centric as your exam prompt and not a specific mission-like prompt.

Please keep track of only your own word counts per character since exams can only take into account your wc even when involved with others. Do not keep a thread wc total. Additionally, your word count cannot be turned in for rewards unless you feel like turning in any wc beyond the required minimum to complete your exam.

I recommend joining the FTRP Grind Party Discord server if you aren't already there, so you can coordinate with others if you wish to interact with them. Should be fun!

The Spooky Forest wasn't exactly a hot tourist area full of attractions unless you were into the occult and getting the pants scared off of you. Occasionally there was a job flyer or two sent out to the boards about a haunting or restless spirits at an old abandoned graveyard, but in this case, hundreds of flyers clogged up the boards of guilds and commons areas. The plea was urgent and desperate, nigh begging anyone with a pulse to come offer assistance. Some sort of simple occult ritual has amplified every creepy thing in the forest. Spirits are more aggressive and visible. The trees are alive and grabby. The dead are rising. And while all of this is basically normal, usually all the spookiness is confined to the boundaries of the forest, but that is no longer the case. Some creepy crawlies have already made it out and into the unfortunate nearby towns, so the locals skirting the dark, damp area are reaching out for help.

It doesn't help that cultists, dark mages, and goth pranksters have also joined in. They are most definitely not there to help, instead making it all worse to thrive off the horrific chaos. Even stranger, despite the potentially deathly and very real consequences, foolish people are starting to travel to the Spooky Forest to enjoy the thrills and chills, treating it more like an early Halloween where they test their bravery against a humongous haunted house with friends and dates. Do they just not believe in spirits? It's turned into a whole kerfuffle that has already claimed lives, yet with every drop of blood shed the intrigue and terror mounts.

Iris was one of those pesky interlopers that arrived just for the fun of it. He believed in ghosts and wasn't impervious to fear, but the chaos of it all drew him like a moth to flame. He had no desire to try and clear out the zombies, ghosts, and other cursed monsters lurking in the twisted shadows. No, he wanted to watch the others, mage and tourist alike, scream in fear. This was a hunting ground for him and his many vices. Those separated by the pack might not meet their death by Creature from the Black Lagoon, but instead, just go blind as Iris expanded his collection with those worthy. Fear was quite literally an eye-opener, allowing easier appraisals while they were wide with fright. Besides, Iris didn't mind getting abused by a spoopy monster or two, as long as they really put some effort into it. Zombies were notoriously boring when it came to maiming and killing. Iris would much rather come across the vengeful ghost of a hot knife-murdered wife.

If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I'll know, if I go there's just no telling how far I'll go
    Pimwadee Chakri

Pimwadee would stand at the edge of the spooky forest, her body was frozen in uncertainty. She should be much further in at this point, but her own fears were holding her back. It wasn't that spooky things scared her, and for the most part ghosts and ghouls, she was fine with. But there was one that brought terror into her heart and for some foolish reason she had begun thinking about her after arriving here and it left her uncertain.

    Krasue.

It didn't really make any sense for Pimwadee to fear for her right now, they Lhukian ghoul was only known to target pregnant women and newborn babies. Of which, Pim was neither. But still, as she stared into the dark trees ahead, she thought she saw a Krasue-shaped shadow moving ahead. It had been this trick of the light that had caused her to freeze in fear. But this was foolish, they had a job to do, there was information that suggests an important artefact lay ahead. The Scroll of Aqua Luminus. A magical parchment which embodied powerful spells that manifested water and light, combining the elements.

She shook herself, an attempt at composure. Looking back over her shoulder at her guildmate, Ling. She tried to feign calmness as she spoke to him; "Are you ready Ling?"

Exam Grind: Horror Edition Empty Re: Exam Grind: Horror Edition

Post by Percy 19th August 2020, 6:12 pm

Percy, ever one to take up a challenge, wasted no time taking up the flyer from the Fairy Tail job board. The Spooky Forest was experiencing heightened malicious spiritual activity due to some event, and not only were the locals living in towns on the outskirts in danger, but there had already been several deaths within the forest. Of course, he had to go do something!

Though he was a man of science and quite esteemed in his field, Percy believed in ghosts, ghouls, and any other creeper that went bump in the night. He believed they existed so much that, prior to this Spooky Forest issue, he'd created a gadget that could harden ectoplasm and supernatural energies, making them tangible and thus vulnerable to physical attacks and being caught. It looked like a wide-nozzled gun attached to a battery pack. The trigger needed to be held down to charge, but once it released it would blast a red wave at the entity and force it through the veil between the physical and spiritual realm. This was especially helpful to Percy in particular, since he had no magical abilities and thus no access to energies that could affect incorporeal beings.

Always a heavy packer, in addition to the anti-ghost gun on his left hip he had his travel medical pack and laptop in a bag across his shoulder, his H.A.R.M. v1.6 on his right hip, and his pyrocryo gauntlets on each arm. This might weight most down, but Percy wasn't slowed in the least. His body was expertly trained and maintained, lean but plenty muscular. He could easily throw a man over twice his size, so he could lift a deceptively massive amount of weight. In a way, he had brains and brawn but paid for it by lacking the Dagger ease with social skills and, of course, the one thing he wanted most. His own insecurities were ultimately his largest pitfalls.

Arriving at the edge of the haunted woods, he double-checked all his equipment and had his Anti-ghost blaster in his hand before he stepped foot into the darkness. He'd been cool as a cucumber up to this point, but when the rubber hit the road, his anxiety shot up and his hand started faintly shaking. Percy was actually a little bit of a scaredy-cat when it came to ghosts and spirits, hence all the work on preventative measures. And while the thought of being able to fight back was comforting, he now wondered why he was seeking it out as if he'd tested his gun before now. This would be the perfect test...but what if it didn't work? Every twig snap or nearby scream sent convulsions through his body, quickening his steps in hopes of finding someone to travel with for support. There was definitely something following him, but he couldn't see it and it wouldn't reveal itself. A few random blasts had either missed it or the gun didn't work, and neither scenario was ideal. Whatever it was made sure he knew he couldn't turn back and leave the forest to regroup, so he had no choice but to continue in deeper and try not to cry.

"A-Anyone a-around?" he called, his stutter betraying him as usual, no matter how stoic he was trying to play it.

Exam Grind: Horror Edition Empty Re: Exam Grind: Horror Edition

Post by Ling 19th August 2020, 9:16 pm

Ling was seldom spooked by the eerie noises and movements of nature at night. For twenty-some years, the young blonde had served as the protector of the Phoenix Forest. The nature in its most naked form is what he recalled as home, so he had never thought twice about what could be in the darkness, and never debated whether the wind was really some terrifying monster meandering in the bushes. It was one of the only times where Ling wasn't anxious by default and felt comfortable in his own skin. So, when he noticed that pause between him and Pimwadee and them entering the forest, Ling began to wonder if something was wrong.

"Uhm... Pimwadee... is everything alright—" Ling began to ask in the quiet, shy undertone of his, but judging by her quick and collected response, he decided to let his question fizzle into silence. When she asked him if he was ready, Ling perked up a little as the rim of his ears turned pink. "Oh—uhm—y-yeah. Let's go...!" Ling nodded, pulling his white cloak over his face as he began to saunter ahead.

Ever since he and Pimwadee met at that guildhall, Ling had seemed to trail behind where Pimwadee was, and they often ended up being together for whatever reason. Because of how comically shy and easily flustered he was, he was having immense difficulty starting conversations with any of his guildmates, and let alone make any friends beyond Pimwadee, Poppi, and Mathis. Those three were like beacons of light to him, teaching him how to read and write, and giving him the very name Pimwadee had called him. It was a kindness a nobody like him really deserved, but he couldn't help but appreciate their insurmountable kindness. So, as a result, the pretty man often hung around them like a lost puppy. In many ways... it was cute.

It's really dark up ahead... I guess we should be careful not to trip... thought the pretty-faced man, noticing his inability to see too far ahead. God forbid some critter scurries past their feet.

    Pimwadee Chakri

With Ling's enthusiastic words in her mind, she smiled, glad once again that he was with her. At present, Ling was perhaps her closest friend in this land. They seem to come together a lot and there was a comfort in knowing someone was around that she knew. He was a very kind man, and very respectful towards her. It was kind of refreshing really, being a woman from a land where things were still slightly... archaic. The dynamic between men and woman in Fiore was vastly different from her own cultures.

There were still some parts of Lhuk where Pim found herself uncertain of such dynamics. The male dominance and patriarchal society carried a sense of frustration for the woman. Particularly what with her been an unmarried twenty-one year old., there was a fundamental pressure on Pimwadee to marry a man, to serve him and bear him children. To be a good wife. Ah yes, how did the mantra of Sunthorn Phu on married life go...

Love and be faithful to your husband, Be humble in front of your husband...

An understandable statement, albeit what followed had always unsettled Pim. When your husband goes to bed, wai him at his feet every night without fail. When he aches and pains, massage him, then you may go to sleep. Get up before your husband and prepare water for him to wash. While your husband is eating, sit and watch him nearby so that when he needs something he does not have to raise his voice. Wait until he finishes before you eat. Of course this was a century-old mantra, but one that many still led their lives by, or at least a distinct guide of sorts. The modern married life was more developed, or at least this was what she hoped. But there staggering numbers of marital abuse in her country set fear deep into her heart, making her want to put off the obligation of marriage for as long as possible. Maybe this wouldn't matter, maybe she would meet a kind man to marry, one who treated her closer to an equal. Maybe her fears were for nothing, but still, they lingered.

As she wandered through the trees, she would inch slightly closer to Ling's side. Not wanting to separate from her blond guildmate. Reaching into the pouch at her hip, she would pull out folded parchment, she squinted in the darkness. "Ling, do you have a light?" She would ask, not that it would do much help. She had no idea where in the forest they were. But still, she wanted to take a look, to see if she could work something out, a means to get to their goal quicker. So they wouldn't have to spend any longer in this forest than physically necessary.

Post by Ling 21st August 2020, 6:13 pm

"A light?" said Ling, stopping when he heard Pimwadee's question. He turned around and held his finger over the parchment paper she was holding, and suddenly, the tip of his finger began to glow with a teal light. It was just enough for the contents of the parchment to come to full view, and then some. "Does this help?" Ling would ask, smiling sheepishly as he looked down to see what she was reading. He knew that whatever was on the parchment was there to help them on their quest tonight, but being illiterate, Ling was a little disheartened to see so many words scribbled across the parchment and understanding little to none of it at all.

Despite his inexperience of people, the blonde was uniquely skilled in his own way. He knew how to traverse the woods, and he could speak to wildlife and plants too. It was certain to be a win in someone's book, but Ling hardly had enough confidence in himself to admit it. The little teal light on his finger was only one of the conveniences of his magic, and while he also had the ability to see better than others in the darkness, he decided to continue holding his finger out to serve as some sort of flashlight.

Watching Pimwadee review the parchment, Ling began to become distracted with the noise of the forest. When the usual wind in the trees and croak of the toads seemed interrupted with a particularly large rustle in a nearby bush, the blond man perked up and looked over to see what it was. When his pretty green eyes fixed to the bush, he saw yet another pair of eyes stare back at him through the leaves. For a moment, he was startled but then became curious. Ling began to turn to face it, but the moment his body shifted, it tore its face away from the bushes and scurried away.

"Oh—" Ling tilted his head with a perplexed look on his face, staring at the bush, "I think I scared it away..." He was mostly speaking out loud, and he wasn't sure if Pimwadee saw what he saw. Whatever the case, he was a little disappointed that it had fled so quickly, and he couldn't help but wonder what it was and why it was watching them. Maybe a small bear?

music and sound goes hand in hand,
They're loud and beautiful, just like me.
beware, beware, the music man likes to play

‘Scary spooky! Scary spooky! Scary spooky!’ That’s at least what it sounded like the green haired musician was happily humming on repeat on his kazoo while he traveled through the forest, even if he was wobbly. They were gonna mess with some people or something like that. Some cultists had done a thing and made stuff go haywire for the good people of Fiore around here. And there was gonna be thrill junkies? Baird wanted to see how out of hand people could get just to get a thrill. He had a new arsenal of instruments to use now and was wanting to test them out. He also had some instruments he needed to fine tune as well since they hadn’t been played with in months.

His kazoo was humming exceptionally louder today as he was feeling rather great about himself today. He wasn’t even sure what it was again that made him feel good. He had some alcohol earlier before coming here. Was it that? He didn’t think he had a whole lot. Just a glass… or a bottle. Or three… Something like that. He chuckles as he sways from side to side, enjoying himself. He continues to hum his kazoo for a bit before he summons a shamisen and starts twiddling a song on it. Was it too loud for the forest? Probably. But the trees helped spread the sound out and around a bit. If he were to be honest, he felt the song suited the forest more and could help scare any travelers around.

He had started to drift a bit off course and found himself alone briefly in the forest while playing his instrument, pausing as he looked around. He pursed his lips and sighs. “Oogy boogy man.” He grumbled as he sways from side to side. He wanted to play some more. He drank before to get rid of a memory from his past. It was slightly working. But he knew it would return. He would have to get over it regardless. Play the music he had grown to love for more fun. Right now though, he needed to find Iris once again. He thought he came here with him? He actually wasn’t too sure. Even about the flask that was on his hip? What exactly had he done? Alcohol usually messed up his ability to make music.

If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me

    Pimwadee Chakri

    Was that a hiss?

It would seem that either the noises coming from the forest were unnecessarily scary, or that her imagination was playing tricks on her. Normal spooky things and such were fine, why had she thought of Krasue at this point. It was foolish and now she would have to continue this mission, nerves rattled. This wasn't even Lhuk, why would Krasue be here. No, she wouldn't. It was silly to think so!

But still, as she looked up between the trees, in her mind's eye she could just picture the ghoul flitting between the shadows. Oily skin, the pale shade of death, hollow hateful eyes and damp black hair that hung way past the severed line of her throat. From beneath the neck, no external flesh or bone. Just the organs that remained beneath, ending just beneath her exposed lungs. A terrifying creature really, the one known as Krasue.

After asking Ling for a light, she would squint in the darkness at him waiting for his response. A moment later the space between them would light up and the tip of his finger glowed with a blue-ish light. Pim would smile, relief clear on her face. "Yes! It does! Thank you." She told him earnestly, before glancing down at the parchment. Her eyes would eye the lines on the map, tracing the lines with her finger. She did a rough estimate in her head from the point at which they had entered the forest, and just how far they had ventured in based on the direction they had walked. It wasn't likely to be perfectly accurate but somewhat close at least. "Okay, I think we go... this way."

She would look back up at Ling, pleased to have some kind of idea of where to go now. Although what he said next would make her pause, her smile fading quickly, replaced with uncertainty. "W-what did you scare?" She asked, glancing around swiftly in an attempt to see what he saw.

Aeluri liked the Spooky Forest the moment she stepped foot under its dark canopy. Everything was creepy, from the lack of light to the eerie mists that clung low to the ground. Branches reached out from trees as if they were going to grab whoever passed by. Strange howls and cries echoed through the trees, seeming to come from all directions at once. This was the perfect place to terrorize some tourists.

A flyer had been posted up in Crocus that week, telling of cultists who had amplified the horrors of the forest tenfold. Some creatures and spirits even were spilling out into the nearby towns, terrorizing the locals and even killing some. The flyers had attracted many types of people. Some mages were there trying to eradicate the threats. Several groups of tourists were there to experience the thrills, seeking out frights. Others were there to partake in the terrorizing and tormenting or to take advantage of those in the forest by stealing or killing. Three of the four Buzz Killers had come for that reason. Iris, to collect more eyes with his beloved scooper, Aeluri, to steal some wallets and spread fear, and Baird, to try out some of his newer magical instruments. It was the perfect opportunity for dark mages to run rampant.

The three had arrived together but split up fairly quickly. It wouldn’t be hard for them to find one another again, but for now they were off doing their own thing. Aeluri found herself stalking through the woods for a while. It was dark and mostly quiet, so she felt right at home. Enhanced hearing allowed her to evade most of the creatures that plagued the forest, but occasionally she had to chase off a ghoul or spirit. At her side paced her treasured companion, Linnea. The massive feline stood eight feet tall at the eartips and sported twin heads and terrifying toothy smiles. Blood red eyes peered around the misty trees, just as alert as Aeluri.

The dark woman placed a gentle hand on the beast’s side, her fingers sinking into the soft white fur. An unspoken message between the two caused them to halt, honing in on a clearing ahead of them. Voices echoed off the trunks.

“Ben, I’m scared. We shouldn’t have come here,” a woman’s trembling voice wobbled to Aeluri and Linnea’s ears. The two looked at each other, all three faces with matching wolfish grins. This group would be their first prey of the day.

“Nonsense, Petunia, this is fun! Look at how creepy this mist is! We’ve seen like three ghosts already, who knows what else is out here!” The man’s voice rang out enthusiastically. He was obviously the lead of the group and overly excited about the horrible things out in the forest.

“This isn’t even scary. Ugh.” A younger woman scoffed, probably a teenager.

Aeluri listened as they rambled on, planning her attack. Should she send Linnea after them? Or form her own illusions? The possibilities were endless!

Post by Iris 25th August 2020, 2:59 am

Baird's constant noise was giving his position away before he could get any good stares, which was irking him a little, but not enough for him to say anything. No, he'd just go about this another way. It was nice to see his new friend and teammate starting to fit into the theme of the team, happily drunk and toddling along. The violette was also drunk, of course, but not so much that he couldn't walk straight. Well, Iris always had an odd swagger in his step, but that was just natural to the flamboyant being and not from the substances he was always pumping into his body. The substances were for everyone's good, including his own. No one wanted to deal with him without a veil of numbness around his brain.

Iris decided to slip into full creep mode to get the job done. To mark this momentous random occasion, he'd equipped some pale, ghostly green hues that faintly glowed. These were especially fun. The guy that previously owned them had a brain like a haunted amusement park. Dark circles formed under his eyes and his skin paled a few shades to paperwhite. His steps no longer made any sound. "Hhhhhow about a little....extra company~" he hissed, bringing his hands up almost like he was about to start conducting a symphony. His lips stretched into an unnatural grin that contrasted the mirthless wideness of his eyes. As his fingers trembled, bending and cracking in all directions. Eerily luminescent ectoplasm started to build in his mouth and drip out between his teeth, oozing down his chin and onto the mossy ground below. He then did what any possessed person was good at and literally spewed the spirits out of his mouth.

There were five in all. One was a gnarly pirate woman, missing most of the lower part of her left leg except for her femur, which she still used but caused a limp from the height difference. There was also a cannonball hole in her sternum, but she seemed far more annoyed with the bony stem she had to walk on, though she didn't have to walk at all. The second ghost was your typical little girl with long hair covering her face, clutching a sweet looking rag doll. Her uncle had strangled her to death, though, so she liked to creep up on men and part her hair, giving them quite the startling expression on her decaying face. The third kinda freaked even Iris out, mainly because he'd been hanged and his eyes were popping out of his skull to hand loosely against his cheeks. His head never quite angled right on his shoulders either, but that was to be expected. The last two were never human, but spirits all the same. A mated pair of undead snowy owls, wrongly poached and possibly more vengeful than the other three. Their wings were transformed in death to display the deceased faces of loved ones on the insides when spread. They also loved to screech loud enough in forest intruders to cause hearing damage and chase them down as they ran with red eyes glowing. They were pretty big now too and liked eating people whole and pooping them out as ghost turds as the ultimate insult, just as they would have a field mouse.

Iris wiped his chin of the haunting residue, grimacing. "That'sss always so hhhhhhorribly nasty~" he frowned, turning toward Baird...or where he thought Baird would be. Peering around slowly, he wondered where his drunk friend had slipped off to. "Baaaaiiird?" he wailed, sounding like a lost ghost himself. Ah well, he'd find him in a minute. "Alright you guyssss," he addressed the five ghosts, about to issue orders. "Go forth and chassssse some goodiess my way. Don't touch the eyesss~ Thossse are mine."

After his words the five turned and floated slowly off in a fan-like pattern, passing through trees and any solid matter nearby as if it wasn't there. Turning, Iris did the same. He phased right through a tree as if he was also a vengeful ghost. It was time to find one of his teammates to keep him company until his pretty ghosties brought him presents. "Baaaird? Aeluuuu?" he called in the ghastly voice associated with these particular set of peepers.

Exam Grind: Horror Edition Empty Re: Exam Grind: Horror Edition

Post by Ling 26th August 2020, 7:22 am

Ling's eyes lit up just slightly when she thanked him for his light. Not only was she kind, thoughtful, and maybe a little too patient with someone like him, it felt good to help her. It felt good to be useful to somebody, even if it only meant providing a little light.

However, when he mentioned the creature watching them from the bushes, Ling realized that he was thinking aloud when she asked him what he had scared off. He turned around, noticing the change in her demeanor and the small stutter in her words. Was she... anxious? It might have been ironic for someone like him, who folded under any amount of pressure and stress, to say that, but he couldn't help but notice it. Ling was always particularly aware of what people may be feeling, but he struggled in deciding what to do with that information.

"Oh—uhm—it was probably nothing. It was probably just a fox, s-so don't worry about it..." Ling tried to reassure her, although nothing about his fidgety body language was particularly reassuring. It didn't help that he attracted plants and animals wherever he went. He could recall, as a small child, stepping on a dead patch of grass and restoring it to its beautiful green in just a fraction of a second. And even to this day, all sorts of wildlife and domesticated animals seemed drawn to him. Needless to say, he was often in the company of animals and seemed to be approached by more housecats and dogs now that he was living outside of the forest... did he smell good? They couldn't eat him...

"S-So! It's... erm... this way, right?" Ling asked sheepishly, pulling his hood down to shield his pink face from her innocent stare as he walked ahead. "T-This is important... to... uhm... the guild, right? So we have t-to hurry..."

If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I'll know, if I go there's just no telling how far I'll go
    Pimwadee Chakri

Pimwadee's body would visibly relax as Ling's response, just a fox, that was fine. No need to worry about a fox, they were beautiful creatures of earth. No need for fear. If they were approached by a regular mammal during their walk through the forest, Pim knew she would be fine. She was particularly in touch with nature, not magically so but in terms of her faith. In her belief that all life was precious, and should be appreciated. So yeah, animals, or in this case foxes. That was fine, as long as it wasn't Krasue.

The Lhukian traveller nodded at her guildmates suggestion, following quickly after him to make sure that she didn't fall too far behind. They would continue to walk for a while, pacing through the eerie forest. As Ling said, the guild was relying on them to do this, which meant they should continue on as quickly as possible. Pim would pace the earth of the forest floor swiftly, the longer they walked the more accustomed she became. Walking swiftly helped give her mind something to focus on, if she could keep her mind on the direction they were heading in. Then she didn't waste anything time dwindling on unnecessary paranoias.

The trees were so quiet right now, aside from the occasional sound of life in the distance, it would appear to be quite still where they walk. "Wait Ling! I need to check again," Pim would pause for a moment, looking down at the map to double check the map, placing the parchment against the bark of a nearby tree and flattening it out. As her eyes traced the details once more, she would freeze, the distinct sound of grumbling nearby. It was clearly the sound of anger, from a creature unknown. But just where was it coming from?

She would look around, peering through the trees to see it's source. Only there was nothing moving amongst the treeline, and that was because the source of the sound was beneath her very feet. The earth would tremble suddenly, and earth beneath her would rise with such force that the purple-haired girl was thrown backwards, flying into a nearby tree. She grunted in pain, wincing as she slid down the wood, loose needles of bark splintering into her back. She glanced up in shock, her amethyst gaze fallen on the beast that rose from the earth where she had stood, the same tree she had leaned against protruding from it's spine.

Exam Grind: Horror Edition Empty Re: Exam Grind: Horror Edition

Post by Ling 30th August 2020, 3:19 pm

The search seemed to be going okay, but honestly, Ling couldn't really tell. He hated being so useless. What sort of person was he to leave all the leading and instructions to Pimwadee? Granted, he couldn't read them if he tried, let alone take that information and lead the way to whatever they were supposed to retrieve. It was embarrassing and made his heart sink every time he thought about it. He really was no good...

"Huh?" Ling stopped in his tracks and turned around when Pimwadee told him to, watching her flatten the map out on a tree's trunk. Apparently, she needed to check again, which only made sense. Who could see clearly in this darkness, and even with his light, who wouldn't second guess their own sight? There was something about doing all of this at night that made the task more daunting—like the blackness of your surroundings was sucking all of your calm and composure out of you like a leech. "Oh... r-right! Take your time..."

In the meantime, the second he let his guard down, he let the voices of the forest come back to him. Everything had a voice. From the brown bears to the oak saplings, they were all saying something that Ling could understand. A lot of it didn't really have any meaning. Some were as basic as 'I'm cold. Need heat', while wolverines really couldn't get enough of blackberries and were always on the prowl looking for more. It was comforting to know that everything around you was really alive, even if a lot of people couldn't understand. He had found some of his greatest friends in his forest home, many of which he'd never see again. He missed that place. In a moment of calm, Ling closed his eyes and took quiet, deep breaths, letting the voices of the forest and the creatures penetrate his every sense and comfort him.

    The sun is gone. Hide!
I wonder where the raven went? He stole my twig!
    I'm thirsty.
    Something's
Gotta go fast, gotta go fast, gotta go fast!
    touching
I like these flowers. I like the purple ones, especially!
    me
I need more space for my nuts!
    What a nice night.
    I'll eat it.
    "...?!"

"Pimwadee! Get out of the—!" Ling called out, but before he could finish his warning, it was too late. A large, wood-like beast burst out from the earth, throwing Pimwadee back into a tree as she let out a painful gasp. She was on the tail-end of the monster now, with Ling at the front. Separated, the blonde felt himself begin to fold in the panic. He was no stranger to defending himself, but he'd never say that he was good at it. He always tried to avoid beasts like this, but it seemed like he wouldn't have that opportunity this time, or at least not while they were so far apart like this. Not only that, but his magic wasn't even close to the offense type!

    Cwrush!

Green roots burst out from the same ditch in the earth the beast made, weaving in between its numerous legs and coiling around its four biggest ones. Realizing what had happened to it, it let out an ear-bleeding screech, thrashing its legs about as it tried to rip itself free from the roots, but to no avail. It wouldn't hold it for very long as it slowly began to pull it up from the ground with its excessive power. Ling stood there with his arms outstretched in front of him, palms open and hands glowing with that green light from before.

"P-Pimwadee! Are you okay?! Can you hear me?!"

The two sinister beings listened to the conversation go on for a few more minutes. It seemed the man saw the Spooky Forest through rose-tinted glasses. Everything was so exciting to him, but they would show him true fear. With a nod, Aeluri and Linnea split paths. They had a plan, and now it was time to have some fun.

The dark woman crouched low behind a tree trunk. The group of tourists had their backs facing towards her. Swirling her hands in circles in front of her, Aeluri began pulling shadows in. They appeared in the form of dark smoke that accumulated at her hands. A few seconds was all it took to gather the right amount of shadows. Peeking around the corner of the tree, Aeluri checked that the people still had their backs turned to her. Cupping her hands around the smoke, she took a deep breath and blew onto it. The dark substance crept into the clearing, mixing with the mist. Everything around the tourists started to go dark as the shadows took place.

“Ben? Ben, what’s happening? Everything’s going dark!” Petunia squealed, gripping Ben’s arm. She whipped her head around with a frightened expression.

    “Woah! This is awesome!”

“No, it’s not,” Petunia snapped. “Let’s get out of here.”

“This is more like it,” the teen muttered with a grim smile. Aeluri felt a bit smug with that comment.

As the shadows turned the mist dark, Linnea took its place. Slowly pacing towards its targets, the creature was a sight. The giant sets glowing eyes pierced the dark cloak of mist like it was mere mesh. An extra bit of magic energy made their sinister smiling teeth glow in the dark. Keeping its heads low like a wolf would, Linnea stalked towards the group, making sure to take louder steps to make its presence known.

“B-Ben? W-what is that?” Petunia whimpered as she noticed the red glow through the gloom. The group turned to look and all three were frozen in fear, even the teenager, who had seemed more excited about this. Linnea proceeded to circle around the group, glowing eyes trained on their every move.

Seeing two sets of red orbs and horrifying smiles was too much for Petunia. She began backing away slowly and tried to pull Ben with her. Despite his earlier eagerness, the man was shaking in fear and had his mouth clamped shut.

Linnea was not letting its prey get away. The feline darted forwards, looming above the group. Both terrifying maws opened to reveal sharp fangs, black mouths, and blood-red saliva. It let out a loud hiss. Linnea’s stare had captivated the people, sending out rings of red light that drew on their fear to keep them from moving. All three froze in place, unable to move.

Aeluri paced from behind the tree trunk and through the dark mist. Approaching Linnea, she gave the creature a few pats. “Well done,” she whispered. “Once I’m done you can have your pick of prey.” Loud purrs rumbled from the feline, who now looked more docile than before.

Approaching the tourists, she began searching their pockets and bags. If they were to look right at her face, they would just see shadows and fleeting, undefined facial features. Aeluri had cast a minor illusion spell with the dark smoke so that she was unrecognizable. She wanted to be mysterious in today’s endeavors.

When she was done, the dark mage had a pile of money, cameras, credit cards, and other valuables. Aeluri looked down on her findings proudly. This would certainly bring in a chunk of cash from pawn shops. Some of the more shiny objects she may keep for herself. She bent down and began putting the items in a rucksack.

“Pleasure doing business with you~” Aeluri purred, standing up and giving the frozen tourists a wave. Their shocked expressions imprinted in her mind, becoming a memory she would fondly look back on. Turning her back to the scene, she left the clearing with a skip in her step. At the tree line, she raised her left hand and gave a flourishing wave, signaling to Linnea that it was free to feast. The sounds of screams and tearing flesh echoed through the trees as she departed, fading quickly with distance.

Aeluri was ready to find her next victim, but something caught her attention first. A ghostly voice wavered through the forest. Furrowing her brow, the dark mage enhanced her vision to pierce through the dark. The sound echoed again and she pinpointed the source. Pacing purposefully towards it, she was surprised to find that it was Iris. Her teammate was phasing through trees, his voice quite spooky-sounding as he called out for her and Baird. The eyes he had equipped seemed supernatural in nature, giving him under-eye bags and deathly pale skin.

“Iris,” Aeluri greeted, coming to a halt next to her ghoulish friend. “I’ve never seen these eyes before,” she commented. The features it gave were intriguing. She’d have to see them in action.

Another stuttering voice called out through the trees, calling out to see if anyone was around. Aeluri ducked behind a tree and attempted to grab Iris to pull him back too, but her hands phased right through his shoulder. “C’mere,” she hissed to him quietly, frustrated at his incorporeal state. Maybe whoever this was could be their next target.

    Pimwadee Chakri

Pimwadee was trained for combat, but her experience of actually taking blows was limited. Which was why the act of by thrown into the air and slamming into a nearby tree had knocked the wind out of her. Leaving her momentarily stunned, her body riddled with pain. She took a moment to try and pull herself up onto her feet, pausing midway from the searing pain that rocketed through her. She collapsed back onto the floor of the forest, her gaze rising to the beast. It was a terrifying creature, attached to the tree she had leaned on. It seemed to have a body made entirely of wood, several spider-like legs protruding from its sides and some kind of soft pinkish glow from within. The source of its life as Pim could only assume. No eyes that she could make out, but definitely a mouth, and a long slimy tongue. Pim sat frozen, her breathing heavy as she eyed the monstrosity. She had never seen such a frightening creature like this before and had little idea on how to proceed. It was a monster, a monster who wanted to eat her.

But it was also a life.

A living breathing creature, one that she had disturbed. It was likely just hungry, and she had foolishly presented herself as dinner to the creature. This was just nature at work, and yet she still found herself shaken because well... she really didn't want to get eaten today.

Suddenly the earth around the beast erupted, roots bursting up through the dirt and coiling itself around the beast. Immobilising the creature for a moment, Pim watched in astonishment releasing that it was Ling. Ling was saving her. There seem to be some kind of blueish-green light glowing from his fingers and amazingly he was using magic to bind the monster in place. With a breath of relief, she realised she needed to get up and move. Pushing through the pain, she turned sideways, reaching for the bottle attached to her hip. Her fingers trembled as she fumbled with its tie, unhooking it, she would unscrew the lif, allowing the magic to pour out of it. A golden aura washing over her, she would feel the pain ease as the wounds began to heal. Sealing it once more, Pim would push herself up into her feet, moving much more easily now. She darted around the creature, over to where Ling was. Making sure to give the beast a wide berth so that it couldn't reach out and snag her but moving quickly enough to reach him in a matter of moments.

"I'm ...okay." She told him, her breathing ragged, she may have healed herself. But it would take a few moments before she truly recovered from the blow she had taken, "Can you bind it long enough for us to get away?" She asked him, she didn't want to kill it. She really didn't but survival came first. And she couldn't let it get to Ling either, that was just not a possibility. Even if it meant using that, her only means of defending herself. It was only for emergencies, but seeing as this was a case of life or death. She knew full well that it might just come to that, and whatever the consequence, she would just have to pray that the Gods forgave her for it.

music and sound goes hand in hand,
They're loud and beautiful, just like me.
beware, beware, the music man likes to play

Bwang! Bwang! Ba-bwang! The musician was idlily playing his shamisen as he walked around. He would stop from time to time. There were voices he was hearing that he couldn’t point where it was coming from at all… “Spooky scary skeletons / Send shivers down your spine / Shrieking skulls will shock your soul / Seal your doom tonight~” He sung as he strummed on his instrument casually. He was enjoying the ambient noise of the forest. It helped the music. It honestly didn’t take him too long to start hearing voices a distance from him. Ones that didn’t sound like they were walking away from him. What? Oh! That was right! The voices were probably some silly adrenaline junkies. He instantly put away his shamisen and grinned as he lovingly lays his head to the side. “Georgia…” He coos as a violin formed in his hand that was shaped like a stained black skull head and was resting on his shoulder. There was a matching bow to it that appeared to be made of rather thin bones. If it was, that was something he wasn’t going to expose.

Before he got too far, he felt he needed something to drink once again. He lowered his violin, and grabbed that flask he had forgotten how he had got, and took a swig of it. Boy! Was that a bad idea! Whatever he had in that, it was freaking strong. “Whooo!” He calls out and shakes his head before he laughs some. A screaming noise happened, and the green haired musician snorted. “Someone’s dead.” He cackles as he puts the flask away. Now it was time for some fun from him! He was enjoying having this new slayer magic to him now. His hearing was even better than before. The notes of the music were sharper, crisper, and rung better than ever. These screams he was hearing, along with the associated shredding of flesh with them till the screaming dulled out, sounded absolutely delicious. He knew it was a distance away from him, but he wasn’t minding it regardless.

    "Baaaird? Aeluuuu?"

What? The green eyes instantly shot around as he was trying to look for the voice. Who the hell…? He wasn’t familiar with that voice at all. He had to find out who was calling for him and one of his teammates. He didn’t get to play his violin yet, and he was upset about that. He just wanted to plaaay. He approached the area he last heard his name being called and glanced around slightly. He was still a bit wobbly. Maybe that last swing of the flask was getting to him? A smell hit him though and a grin formed on his lips. That was Aeluri’s scent. Dragon slayer magic was great! He quickly followed the scent and heard Aeluri greeting Iris? He got close and was suddenly behind the two. He didn’t mean to come up from behind, but it just happened to work out that way. He finally got a look at Iris and he squinted at him. “Something’s different about you.” The musician was kind of oblivious to the whole ghosty white look and his dark circles under his eyes. He had crouched next to Aeluri and held his violin just above the ground. “We going to play at a concert? This violin can be fun to play at one.” He giggles as he hung his head, wobbling to the side some, nearly falling over, but he caught himself with his hand and pushed himself up right.

Post by Percy 19th September 2020, 2:40 am

    "SCREEEEEEEEEEEE!"

The screech was enough to seize every muscle in his well-maintained body. It was also close enough for one of his ears to start bleeding, which was alarming on several levels. The two-toned boy was already spooked by the forest in general, but to have something that loud approach without warning and already be that close? Percy, once he had access to his neck muscles, haltingly looked over his left shoulder to try and find the source. He immediately wished he hadn't. Desperately longed for ignorance. The Curse of knowledge might do him in on the spot.

Two ghastly owls were soaring toward him, passing through the forest trees as if they were in the open sky. Their red eyes ghoulishly glowed, at first swiveling like spotlights searching the night, but within seconds, both sets were bathing him in their hostile light. They hovered in the air before him and spread their wings to form a spooky projector. The two spirits began their haunting show to torture their prey.

Images began flashing on the undersides of the wings in quick, jarring succession as the two hauntingly hooted. Closing his eyes would have been a wise choice, but there was something about fear that compelled most to remain aware, even when it only made things worse. Bloodied corpses jumped from wing to wing. It was only a fleeting moment before he realized what he was actually being shown. Seeing his brother and sister dead in various, hyper-realistic ways was a feeling so profoundly sickening that he crumpled down to his knees. It was so awful that he couldn't look away now even if he turned off his survival instincts. Percy knew it wasn't real (hopefully), but the psychological distress it caused was. Artemis, Pandora, and even the Dagger childrens' butler/nanny/trainer Wallard Baldwin were both repeatedly shown being killed or already dead in various stages of decay. Why were they showing him this?

To protect himself from going mad, the more analytical part of his brain took over. This was just a terror tactic. From what he could deduce from the frequent and abrupt changes was that these weren't memories or real images. That was a relief, if someone could find any source of that in this terrible situation. So it could see into its target's psyche to pull up the most painful images of loved ones perishing. Perhaps that explained the headache he now had that only intensified the longer the displaycontinues. That was not ideal, but something else occurred to him. It was only showing the deaths of Pandora, Artemis, and Mr. Baldwin. Shouldn't there...shouldn't there be more? He could have looked away now that he was calmer, but instead, he kept watching, waiting, hoping someone else would flash across, as macabre as that was. There was no one else. There were only three people in his life that he seemed to care enough for to crumble if they died. Only Percy could come to a more depressing conclusion than what two pissed off owl ghosts could show him. Three people were better than none, but it certainly had a plethora of implications, none of which the young man appreciated.

Since their little show had lost its effect, the two owls screeched and flapped, flying in a dizzying circle around him. All that was left to do was eat him, so their beaks unhinged and dropped low enough to swallow a prone human, though it seemed the twin birds intended to just share him.

Percy certainly wasn't going to kneel there in his existential crisis and be killed. Hopping to his feet, he took off as fast as his strong legs could carry him, hoping he'd survive this haunted forest.

    The Ghosty Chronicles

    One: Avast, Young Idiots!

As the pirate woman woman pointlessly limped through the air, passing through all manner of physical form, she wheezed out many an "Arg" and "Ahoy" as if that would attract someone to scare the pants off of, but no dice. Despite the fact that the hole in her chest was way too big for this to make sense, that and she was incorporeal, the wind rushing past the gorey hole make a low howling noise, like someone blowing on the top of an empty glass bottle. So she haunted her way through the forest, hole wailing, muttering random pirate slang and old shanties, one of which she seems to have written herself in her copious amounts of free time being dead.

    "O'er an' O'er I says to ye,
Point yer cannon away from me!
    Ye fiddle an' faddler,
    Twisted, I says ta stop,
    Oh, avast, ye daft paddler!
    Cannon's 'bout ta pop!
    Fate's cursed tobacco,
    Fell from igit's pipe,
    Fuse's lit, bucko,
    Fear my time is ripe!
    Boom, the cannon's call,
    Whoosh, the cannon's ball,
    Cap'n smacks the wall,
Now this lass haunts them all!"

Seeming the victim of either a trecherous or especially terrible young sailor, her warbling tale explained the hole, but not the leg. Perhaps that's in Volume 2: The Prequel. She actually seemed about to start figuring out those lyrics when she finally happened upon a lively lad with a popped polo collar running through the trees. He was whooping and hollering, and if she'd thought he was by herself, she mas mistaken. A few feet behind him was the rest of his frat house boys and their giggly tavern wenches. One of the younger boys was playing the part of pack mule for the large, metal keg on his back. Already pretty inebriated, the rowdy crowd were using this as some sort of test of strength as well as hazing some younger boys into their brood. Perfect!

"AHOY!" she called again, appearing before them with two cutlasses drawn. Her silvery hair and ragged clothing wafted around her as if she were submerged in the ocean, and her once pretty face was sunken in and leathery. Cracked lips spread into a smile as they all stopped short to gape at her. "Would 'at be rum ya 'ave in yer metal barrel thar, matey?"

"I-It's b-b-beer, m-ma'am.." one of them wheezed, drawing her one-eyed glare. Perhaps there was a shanty for that injury as well? Or maybe there was an eye under that patch.

"GARR?!" the sea-wise wraith grumbled. "Ma'am?! I be the cap'n, not some bonny lass draped in lace! An' beer?! The way it tastes and smells, pour it back in the ol' horse! Piss I tells ya!"

    "S-Sorry!"

    "SORRY, WHAT?"

    "SORRY, CAPTAIN!"

"AYE! Tha's better..." simpered the pirate, though this was all just a game. There was no way she'd let any of these sorry S.O.B.s live. First she demanded the beer she'd just insulted. It wasn't as if she could taste it, and even as she partially solidified her body for effect, the pale gold liquid simply slid down her gullet and ran out the large hole in her chest like a broken fountain. Why the group hadn't scattered and run was beyond her. If they had, most of them would have had a higher success rate of survival. From her anyway. Didn't anyone have any survival skills these days? Either way, they all continued to be frozen in place, watching her in glazed-eyed silence. "Ye know, ye all remind me of a certain werthless sailor I used to know..." she mused, observing their slack jaws. "In fact, the one tha' gave me this," the pirate motioned to her missing middle, before releasing a woeful, rage-dripping shriek and proceeding to rope the group together and begin hacking away at them with her blades. She was careful to heed her master's warning, though. All the eyes would be collected into a jar with the lid secured tightly.

    Two: If Looks Could Kill

Having much quicker luck than her pirate comrade, the little grudge girl was deceptively fast and exceptionally creepy. Her favorite way to initiate her hauntings was by waiting near a path, then moving out from behind a tree a few feet ahead of them. She'd solidify herself, standing there still as death in her pale purple nightgown with her head lowered. Thick curtains of black hair obscured her face as she stood there, inviting anyone with a heart to overcome their instincts to run to instead help out a poor, lost child. Occasionally she'd add a sniffle or sob in for effect if it didn't seem they were the "good person" type, gripping her rag doll tighter at her side. She only did this to men, since those were the focus of all of her ire. Even now, in the cold grip of death, she had no idea why her uncle choked the life out of her in the middle of the night. She'd thought they were friends! He took her toy shopping and fishing all the time before. She'd loved him dearly, so why, why did he sneak into her bedroom that night and steal her? Why did he take her to that shack out in the woods where no one would find her? Why did he wring her neck? Why, why, why?!

If looks could kill. Well, in her case, her looks could kill!

"Oh my! You gave me a scare there, little one," a kindly man startling, nervously laughing as he clutched the camera he'd almost dropped. He looked absolutely rediculous. There were sensors and microphones strapped all over him, even to his floppy hat. This one was about the same age as her uncle. If she'd had eyes, she'd have rolled them. The ghost hunter, paranormal activity weekend warriors were annoying. Somewhere in the back of her mind she knew that he wasn't a bad guy, but logic and reasoning were not for vengeful ghosts to have. No, even though she knew he was probably someone's daddy, the fact that he could also be some little girl's homicidal uncle was all it took for her to always commit to her afterlife's goal. "Where's your mom and dad, missy? I can help you find them," he continued, his concern for what he thought was a frightened, living child causing him to ignore all biological signs of danger. Amusingly, though, every single one of his ghost sensing appratuses were silent and normal, even though he was within an arm's reach of a truly malicious spirit. He'd found the very thing he sought for thrills, yet had no clue.

He touched her. For a second he felt nothing but cold. It didn't register until she went full ghost and his hand slipped right through her. Reeling slightly from the shock, he inhaled to scream but would never get out a single peep. His eyes widened as she tilted her face up, the curtain of hair parting in the middle and revealing something truly horrifying. Her decaying face was unlike anything capable of being recreated for horror entertainment or even by the human mind in nightmares. It was so, so much worse. His eyes met her empty, black sockets. Only thin bands of flesh held the pieces of skull and muscle together on her face. There's no need to discuss the bug situation or further gorey details, so it can be left that the sight was so devastatingly scary that, like everyone she showed it to, the ghost hunter simply died on the spot. She was just a little girl, so she couldn't fathom the very real responses the body would have to such a thing that would result in death. All she cared about was that he saw what was done to her and he was dead. Reaching down, she plucked out his eyes and placed them in a jar, placing it inside her doll for safe keeping.

Without further pause, she lowered her head and darted back into the woods to find another victim.

    Three: Swing Low

Eustace was a different kind of ghost amongst the group of five. He wasn't really in this for the revenge against stand-ins for those who had wronged him. No, he'd deserved the fate he got and he was proud of it! Paunchy and older at his time of demise, Eustace had killed a man while robbing a bank over a century ago. Well, that was the crime he'd got caught for, anyway. He'd committed many other heinous crimes, enjoying the no-good scoundrel he was. Some people are just born bad. He never tried to keep his evil deeds a secret, but he didn't want to get caught, neither! The world had been wild and more spaced out in those times, so it was easy to escape and hide without being tracked. If only he hadn't done that last heist three sheets to the wind. Okay, so he was a little cocky! It was alright. He'd lived a dasterdly, long life. They were pretty fond of hangings back then, so as we swung from the gallows, he gained his rather unnerving eye protrusions and crooked neck, but that didn't stop the flannel, cowboy booted man from whistling and swaggering about like the outlaw he used to be. He'd hoped the next 'life' would be one he could shake up as well, and he got his wish!

He wasn't a particularly good haunter, though. His favorite method was chasing around pretty girls and jumping out from behind trees with a "RAAUGH!" while trying to honk their, well, assets. His thing was more general, annoying terror and jump scares than killing, though if he actually caught someone...well, he wasn't opposed to it every now and then. Murder was just boring and overdone. It was the fear on their faces and their screams that did it for him. It gave him power. He didn't really even have to do anything! The ripped skin at his neck from the rough old hanging rope, the unnatural angle his neck and head listed to, and his unsocketed eyes were enough to cause most to scream and throw up. It gave him the belly laughs to watch!

    Four and Five: Owl Poop

Obviously we just saw what spirit #4 and #5 were up to. Poor Percy Dagger.

"Mmm~, yessss..." Iris literally hissed, simpering as Aeluri came into view and mentioned his ghastly gazers. "They are a newer fiiind~ The only downssside is this terrible craving for naaachooosss...."

As his feline-esque friend darted behind a tree and her hand passed through him, he let out a ghastly giggle. It tickled his insides, and he couldn't resist floating to rest over her as he humored her request for him to hide. "Fufufu~ you're inssssside me~" Ghost Iris joked, unable to resist. Knowing she'd start swatting, he moved to stand near her and out of sight, and that's when Baird reappeared. The drunken man noticed something was different, but couldn't seem to put his finger on it. Iris found this amusing as well, reaching out to try and pass his intangible hand through somewhere special and hoping for a little shock, but spirit shenanigans had quickly gotten old. Now that he was using these peepers around his peers, he saw the obvious inadequacies of using them on their own. As someone who loved to be touched with varying degrees of force, being intangible was a buzz killer. On that note, as he remained hidden, he opened up eye sockets on his forehead for the creeper peepers so he could requip his normal lavendar ones in the main slots. Other than having four visible eyes like some sort of alien or demon, he was back to his normal tangible self. Of course, that meant he reached out to hang on Aelu, always the clinger.

Iris had heard the distant whimper ahead in the forest too and now the crashing of foot falls heading toward them. "Oh yay~ My feathery friends are shooing a little mouse my way~" he purred, officially seeming more himself. Inhaling deeply, the slayer scented the fear and sorrow on whoever it was noisily coming their way. Just as a delicious man with half white, half-red hair stumbled past their tree, Iris stuck out a leg and simply tripped him. "We'll take it from here," he commented to the ghost owls on his trail. They seemed uninclined to listen to him until the pale eyes in his forehead flashed, then they obeyed and flapped off to find some other poor souls to eat. "Well, well...Hello there, handsome~" he said to their new toy, a wicked grin spreading over his lips.

    Exam Grind: Horror Edition PnGhJv3

Aeluri raised an eyebrow as Iris mentioned the eyes’ side effects. Nachos? She shook her head at the strangeness of his magic. Every set of eyes was new and different.

The dark mage let out a sigh at the innuendo her teammate said. It was amusing, but she refused to give him the satisfaction of showing it. She raised her fist to give him a light punch on the arm, but held it back as she remembered he was slightly incorporeal at the moment. When he was more substantial, she’d have to try again. Besides, he had already moved away.

Baird reappeared out of the mist behind them, holding a violin. He seemed off. Aeluri caught the sharp scent of alcohol as he crouched next to her. The musician wasn’t usually one to get drunk, he usually didn’t even attempt to match the unhealthy amounts of alcohol she and Iris consumed on the daily. Bypassing his question about a concert, she got straight to the point. “Are you drunk?” Behind them Iris had become tangible once more, now with an extra set of eye sockets in his forehead. He clung onto her, which she tried to ignore.

She went still as a man ran by the tree they were hiding behind. He had half red and half white hair and seemed scared, not noticing the three Buzz Killers hiding nearby. Behind him swooped two ghostly owls, their spooky eyes trained on their prey. On the underside of their wings images flitted, though they were passing too fast for Aeluri to make out what was there.

Iris reached out a leg and tripped the young man, leaving him to sprawl on the ground. Apparently the owls were of Iris’ making, as with a flash of light from his second set of eyes, they turned tail and soared off into the forest. They must have been a product of his spooky pair of peepers.

Aeluri stepped around the team’s prey, circling him and looking him over like a piece of meat. He seemed young and quite muscular. She could smell his fear. Whatever those owls were showing him must have been unpleasant. Adrenaline filled the dark woman as she inhaled that fear smell. It was nearly euphoric.

“What do we have here?” she purred, placing a foot heavily on his back to keep him in place. She couldn’t help but dig her heel in just a little. “What are you doing out here all alone?” Crossing her arms and leaning over, she peered at his face, noticing the scarred skin around his left eye.

Assuming he would answer in some way, Aeluri snapped her fingers. From the misty shadows, Linnea appeared once again. Its white fur was still stained with the blood of its prey from earlier, giving it a gruesome look. “We’ll just have to teach you why you don’t come to places like this alone,” Aeluri chastised him with a wicked grin. “Linnea, some hallucinations, if you will? I want to see him squirm.” Those last words sounded almost hungry. Her mismatching eyes gleamed with the excitement of a wolf looking upon a fresh kill.

music and sound goes hand in hand,
They're loud and beautiful, just like me.
beware, beware, the music man likes to play

As the bard was questioned if he was drunk, he looked over at Aeluri and raised an eyebrow. As he did so, it seemed Iris had reached to him and started to smile to him before he realized that no touch was there? What?! He looked down with what seemed like a pout as he looked back up. “I aaaaaam…. Not not drunk… I think! I had maybeeeeee… one… two… threeee…. Yes many bottles. And whatever is in this flask.” He giggles as he leans towards Aeluri, holding up the little metal flask he had found on his hip. “You smell oooohhh soo nice… My nose pickeded that up.” He sighs happily. He gasped as he saw Iris get four eyes and snorted. “Hey, fourrrr eyes! Looking good.” He points his violin bow to him.

He turned his head a bit as the running got closer towards the trio here by the tree. He snorts as Iris had seemed to trip the guy and stayed crouched where they were. “A mouuuse.” He snorts before muttering a short song about a mouse running up clocks. He looked up as he saw the owls, ‘hoot’ing a little as he cut off his own little song before looking at the white and red haired man, who looked rather scared. Iris seemed to trip him as he ran by, and giggled. “He fell… Ooooooh He is cuuute.” He wooed a bit as he stood himself up some and started to totter over to the guy on the ground. He took a deep breath before he decided to lay himself on his back next to the guy flat on his face on the floor. “Are you having fun yet?” He giggles to the man while holding up his violin. The song he was muttering earlier was being played in a violin form, a decent bit screechy too.

He leaned his head up a bit to spy the big cat that Aeluri called. “Heeeerrrreeee kitty kitty.” He cooed out to the cat as he giggled. “Hallucinations…” He thought for a moment before he started screeching another song on his violin slowly. “Mary Mary quite contrary,/How does your garden grow?/With silver bells and cockle shells/And pretty maids all in a rowwww~” He started giggling at his own song and looked at the half and half headed guy. He smiled ever so sweetly to the man as he stayed laying there on the ground. A decent bit of a distance away, four little imps were holding their own instruments, making a whole little band, as they were jumping in excitement. They wanted to play. So badly, but they were waiting. Waiting for the okay. Behind the band of demons was a black misty, victorian dressed woman who seemed to be cackling silently in view of the group. She was ready for her own play as well. He only hoped he was churning the little half red and half white guys mind with Georgia. “Kitty kitty~!”

Exam Grind: Horror Edition Empty Re: Exam Grind: Horror Edition

Post by Percy 24th October 2020, 5:38 am

At first, he thought he'd caught a lifted tree root. Not that panicked people running had the time to concentrate on footing, but Percy was quite adept at balance and running, so he was rather confused when he was suddenly eating dirt. He hit the ground hard and skid, barely getting time to look back to see a leg before he was shoved back down into the ground. Someone had tripped him! And what was holding him down? An owl? No, that didn't feel like a talon. He turned his head and struggled to look up and back. A woman. There was a woman there stepping on him, not letting him up. So it would go from bad to worse, would it? Seemed par for the course. How could he have been so stupid and come here alone? And as soon as he thought that, it was echoed from his aggressor. Just rub it in. He said nothing, mostly because fear wouldn't let him, but also because he knew his terrified stuttering would only excite and fuel his tormentors on.

Yes, tormentors. Plural. He still couldn't see whoever tripped him, but yet another person had stepped closer. This man seemed less sadistic as a first impression and instead came off odd. Long green hair and a wobbly gait...was he drunk? It didn't matter, because soon his focus shifted to the violin he played, but even that thought didn't stay long. A bloody, two-headed cat with white fur was called for and being ordered to give him some hallucinations. Then there was more music. This was all just...a lot to process when he was already so clearly frightened. Was the little band of imps and the victorian lady really there or had the hallucinations already started?

Oh. If Percy had thought he was already hallucinating before, he quickly realized how wrong he was. He forgot all about the pain in his back as the cat's magic started to work on him. There was a searing pain in his head, then he could no longer see the forest. It was a large, ornate room that costed more than most people make in a lifetime. At first, his attackers were still there, warping and deforming into dark creatures more aesthetically in line with a haunted forest. He imagined that they spoke curses and painful truths to him in hissing whispers, all while a twisted song played by the imps in the corner. While the identities of the trio were unknown to him, the older man also present in the room was all too familiar. It was his grandfather, a man he'd rarely been in a room with this way since the incident. It seemed he'd be reliving said incident today.

As if having an out of body experience, he watched his younger self walk into the room. Younger Percy was well on his way with physical training, so he was by no means slight despite his gentle countenance. This Percy had a head full of dark red hair and his face was free of scarring. Those that didn't pay attention might have mistaken him for his older brother, Artemis, until they noticed how young he was. Cradled in his hands were a pair of gauntlets and in his matching eyes the bright spark of hopefulness. But among the hopefulness was apprehension. The head of the Dagger family was intimidating, and it was no secret to anyone within these walls how Mephistopheles felt about the youngest Dagger son having no magical abilities at all. Any perceived weak link in the chain was unacceptable, so Percy had worked tirelessly to make up for his shortcoming. With any luck, he could use what he did possess to stand on equal ground with his family, or that was the idea. In the end, as he showed the gauntlet's ability to make it seem as if he had the powers of fire and ice, it sent the family head into something of a rage. The fiery gauntlet was swatted back at him, his grandfather disgusted. Since it was a prototype, it malfunctioned and spewed not only the volatile fuel back on his face and head, but it also lit that fuel ablaze, thus permanently injuring him. The hair follicles on one side would never grow Dagger red hair again, the scar would never disappear, and his eye would require drops for the rest of his life.

Watching it happen as a spectator was weird. It was like he was remembering it without all the personal feelings and trauma, but the hallucination wouldn't have that for long. No, before long he was back where he should be, caught in a loop as the gauntlet was smacked back in his face over and over, the burning and searing happening all over again in excruciating detail and accuracy. What wasn't accurate was the shifting form of the patriarch, slowly turning into a red-skinned devil with every backhanded swipe that sent a new wave of agony. "S-Stop..." he muttered, voice muffled by the dirt his face was smashed into. "STOP! IT HURTS!" he screamed more fully, burn after burn after burn popping like fireworks in the sky while the devil himself laughed and the demonic imps' demented tune grew louder and more chaotic. Tears squeezed from his right eye, sliding over his face and into the ground.

Meanwhile, outside the hallucination he was caught in, his body had its own reaction to the magic being used on him. Still unbeknownst to him, the allergic-like reaction he had to all things supernatural was building and growing in severity with prolonged contact. Percy's body began to twitch randomly, bordering on convulsions. After a few more minutes, blood began to ooze from his nose, and even if Percy had been able to come out of the hallucination, he wouldn't have been able to function.

Peculiarly, about the time Percy's eyes rolled back in his head and his cries went silent, a strange, dim pulse rushed out from his body. It looked a little like a thin fog, but what it did made up for its lackluster appearance. In an effort to save the helpless man from dying, something secret and buried deep within released just a small burst of anti-magic to negate the harmful magic, almost like an immune system finally deciding to fight off an infection. Should the haze not be detected, a slight breeze also seemed to accompany it, rustling the nearby leaves of trees and bushes and attempting to negate any magic present.

    Exam Grind: Horror Edition PnGhJv3

Baird had laid next to the fallen man on his back. Screeching mixed with music filled the air caused Aeluri to grit her teeth as her drunken teammate played his instrument. She loved the sound of the violin, but not with sour notes thrown in the mix. Classical music had always been a favorite of hers, and Baird was a master at it like he was with most music. However, when he was drunk, she found she would rather have silence than missed notes.

Linnea mostly ignored the imbibed musician, though the feline would have loved a good scratch behind the ears. It was focused on its prey now. Red eyes glowed menacingly as it leaned down to get a good sniff of the man on the ground. The scent of fear kicked up an increasing bloodlust in the creature. However, it couldn’t indulge just yet. Aeluri had ordered hallucinations, and as her trusted bond pet, Linnea obeyed without hesitation.

Leaning down, the feline let its saliva drip onto some exposed skin of the team’s prey. Normally it would have taken a hefty bite with both heads and let the magic take its effect through a wound, but a look from Aeluri redirected it to just a drip. The blood-red liquid sunk into the skin as soon as it collided, leaving no trace save for a slight irritated red tint.

Aeluri watched the reaction eagerly as the hallucinogens began to take effect. The young man looked lost in another world, likely one horrible in nature. Linnea’s hallucination magic was a cruel master once it got a hold of the mind. While each victim was different, the magical effects infused in the saliva caused the visions to be awful no matter what. It pulled nightmares and fears from the deepest crevices of the mind and mixed it with a healthy dose of horror. Some might see memories, while others could see something akin to sleep paralysis demons. There was no rhyme or reason to it, just suffering. That was its true purpose. However it manifested, Linnea and Aeluri both enjoyed using the ability for their own gain.

Muttered words came from the victim’s mouth, muffled by the dirt pressed against his face. Were those tears she saw? Aeluri was enjoying the show. The terror and discomfort fueled her like a high. It was delicious, addicting. The pain of others was a pleasure to the sadistic woman.

His body began twitching and Aeluri perked up. The scent of blood reached her nose. Were his hallucinations so severe that he would succumb to them? Was he about to die from the saliva? Perhaps what he had seen was awful enough for his brain to just shut down for good. That had never happened before in all her years with Linnea. If he were to just flat out die so quickly, her fun would be cut short.

All at once, he seemed to almost faint. Aeluri saw the man’s eyes roll into the back of his head. Furrowing her brow slightly, she leaned in closer to peer at him. She noticed tears and dirt coating his face, as well as blood dripping down from his nose. That must have been what she smelled earlier. That wasn’t a clear sign of death, so she reached out a hand to prod his shoulder. Her red-painted nails dug in slightly, but the man seemed to be unresponsive.

A slight breeze and a dim wave of something pulsed out from his limp body like a tsunami. Leaves rustled as the shockwave expanded through the trees. What the hell was that? It was subtle, but Aeluri felt something was off at once. Something her victim had done, whether actively or by accident, had caused this wave to rush over her. She felt her magic fade, like it had been taped up in a box. It was still there, but just out of reach. The dark mage was helpless to stop it.

At her side, Linnea had begun to squirm when the shockwave hit. The feline shook its dual heads as if it were trying to get something out of its fur. Snarls echoed around them. Magical tension built in the air, intensifying rapidly. With one final tortured howl, the two-headed beast disappeared into a puff of black shadow, melding with the darkness. Linnea had been sent back to the dark where it normally resided by whatever that wave was.

Stumbling back, Aeluri’s chest felt tight. She attempted to call upon her magic power to summon shadows around her hands that would grant her strength. That little twerp in the dirt was going to pay for despawning her beloved cat. However, as she held up clenched fists, nothing happened. The magic she possessed was still there, but she couldn’t access it. Her magic was muted and Linnea was gone into shadow.

The dark woman had never been without her magic before. Throughout her life, it had always been there. She was able to call upon it whenever she wished. But now, it was just out of her reach, behind a door locked by the two-toned man. Aeluri felt more tired than she had in a long time, like she needed to nap for three days straight. The rings on her fingers felt cold. How long would this last? She hated this feeling. How dare this guy negate her magic, something that belonged to her? Her irritation was growing stronger by the minute.

Looking to her teammates, Aeluri noticed that they were similarly afflicted. Stepping towards them turned out to be much more of an effort than she anticipated. With her magic negated, it felt as if she was carrying weights all over her body. It never occurred to her that her magic was so deeply ingrained within her that there would be physical effects without it.

The assassin lost focus on her prey. With this magic negation, she felt more of a desire to escape the effects than to continue with her torture. “We can’t use magic here now because of that rat. Let’s go somewhere else,” she hissed as she approached her teammates. Realizing Iris probably couldn’t see without magic, she reached out and grabbed his elbow. She would guide him for now, not out of the kindness of her heart - if that even existed - but because she wanted to get the hell out of there. Having her magic blocked was unsettling to say the least.

Iris had been somewhat content to stay back and just watch as his friends played with their toy. He'd come in if something interesting presented itself, but for now, he'd watch. Judging from that unfortunate burn that marred an otherwise beautiful face broke his heart, but not as much as what said burn had done to the eye surrounded by that fire-tainted flesh. He could tell that it was damaged and that's what had caused the color to shift. Fake heterochromia and a pair ruined by injury at that, Iris was utterly uninterested in the tormented, ugly boy so far. Even worse, he sensed nothing in those eyes or in that body. Was he not a mage? Why would a non-mage willingly come here alone? Sure, this whole 'event' of sorts was drawing foolish people to their doom, but this guy had no defense or bravery to prove. He didn't even see any paranormal equipment. Sometimes stupid was cute, but this was overboard.

Just wanting to double down on his assumption that this boy was useless, Iris stepped forward and stooped at the boy's head. Reaching down, he attempted to pull something from his good eye, as he had as a bar trick more than a few hundred times since he'd known Aeluri. As expected, nothing came. Utter disgust crossed his face and he walked back toward the tree they'd hidden behind, content to watch his friends play with him. "Nasty," he muttered to himself moodily, disappointed that what his ghostly owls had brought him would benefit him no more than to enjoy a sadistic show.

But no, it was so much worse than that. As the young man seemed to succumb quickly, proving to be the epitome of disappointment, some sort of haze pulsed out as if he'd generated a breeze. That was strange, since Iris sensed nothing--

"GAH!" he cried, feeling the sicky ghost eyes in his forehead disappear. While the ones in his sockets remained, they dulled and became as utterly useless as this owl turd passed out in the dirt. "GAAAH!!! OH NO...WHAT DID HE DO?" Iris wailed, reaching up to rub his eyes, though he knew full well what had happened, even if it didn't make sense. His pretty face twisted into a dark snarl. There were few things Iris hated more than being blind, which is why he avoided the Neutral Grounds at all costs. "I can't friggin' SEE!" growled the alien now in quite the foul mood. Negation? Where had that come from? This guy had no potential at all, magic or otherwise, and then he just disarmed and blinded all three of them? Aeluri grabbing his elbow caused him to flinch in surprise and uncertainty. He hadn't noticed her approach and he couldn't sense her at all, but only a friend would know what nullifying magic meant for the ocular requip made. Grumbling a thank you, he'd gladly accept her help navigating away from this area, hoping that putting some distance between them and the strange man might alleviate the effects faster.

music and sound goes hand in hand,
They're loud and beautiful, just like me.
beware, beware, the music man likes to play

The green haired musician was simply enjoying the reactions of their little friend here who had run into them on his own. He was fun to play with to the drunken man. He continued to play his music, but slowly started to even out as he noticed Aeluri making faces a bit at some notes, there was still purposeful screeching in his music. He was cackling to himself as he leaned his head back and made an evil HISS with the violin. The band of demons got excited. They started to run around the area, screaming random obscenities and making their music go loudly. The victorian lady was seeming to scream-sing louder, even without a sound coming to her. Baird was giggling more and more as he was starting to enjoy himself. This was how a party should go!

Then he noticed the guy twitching. He paused in his own playing as the demons started to play their own tunes of devilish music. He really stopped when he squinted at him. He may have felt light and airy from his alcohol adventures, but his slayer senses still worked a bit, he just… couldn’t fully put a finger on it. But after that, the puff of fog made him blink as he stood up from laying on the ground next to him. He wasn’t aware that this forest could have that? Could it? He then looked up and noticed his demons were gone, and his Devil Woman. Before he could do anything else, his violin went away. He was quickly sobering up. “Ey! What the fuck did you do?!” He shouts to the limp body next to him. “Dreamweaver! Flute of the Night! Burning Sax…?” He lets out an angry groan as he puts the heels of his hands on his eyes and falls back down next to the unconscious guy. None of the usually loud instruments were coming to his hands to be able to make his music. “MY MAGIC WON’T WORK!” He cries out, not caring about the others at this particular time.

Aeluri told him to get away from the guy and that he was the cause of their lack of magic suddenly. He began to pout as he leaned his head back. “Aeluriiiii! I can’t make my musicccccc!” He cries to her as he struggles to get his feet. He wanted his music. It was too quiet without it. He was wobbly and started to follow after her after spitting on the ground next to their prey that failed them entertainment. He let up a rather childish stomp before he pulls out his flask again and chugs some of the alcoholic content. “I’m going to sing!” He says as he pulls the flask away from his lips with a pop! He then held up his hands as if he was pretending to play a guitar- in which he really was- and begun to play it as if he was playing a song for them, making sound effects as he played.

“I like to dream, yes, yes, new now new now new~
Right between the sound machine, ba ba baba
On a cloud of sound I drift in the night
Any place it goes is right
    Goes far, flies near
To the stars away from here
    Well, you don't know what
    We can find
Why don't you come with me little girl
On a magic carpet ride- banow now now!”

He was seeming pleased with himself and humming some of the lyrics and mumbling some others allowed as he tottered off with Aeluri, waiting for his magic to come back again, and drinking the rest of his flask for comfort.

    Exam Grind: Horror Edition XA9hAZa

It takes grace to remain kind in cruel situations

The thing that kept the creature from puncturing Ling to death were the roots and vines that ensnared to the ground, but that alone would only hope to stall the inevitable if they stayed here any longer. He could feel his heart race, his bated breath in his eardrums as he held the creature in place, waiting for Pimwadee to answer him, but there was nothing. He could hardly hear his own voice over the creature's screeches, much less Pimwadee's if she had said anything. It felt like if he had taken his eyes off of it for even a second, it'd break free and they'd be at its mercy. He couldn't let that happen! But after a few moments of hopelessness, darting around the creature was none other than Pimwadee, approaching him from the side in her partially recovered state.

"Pimwadee!" Ling spoke in a voice rising with relief, but then a look of concern struck his boyish features when he realized that she hadn't made a full recovery. Her voice was ragged and movements a little more sluggish than when she wasn't hurt, but at least she wasn't unconscious. It was at this point that Pimwadee had made the suggestion that they run away from the creature if Ling could ensnare it for even longer. The idea was exactly what he wanted too, but when she asked this, the blonde hesitated to immediately respond. A look of doubt overcame his eyes, and while it had only lasted for a second, all of his doubts swallowed him. Ling wasn't strong. He couldn't charge into battle with confidence, and he couldn't protect the people he had come to care about. Just holding this woodland beast in place sucked mana out of him and rattled his body with the burning sensation of muscles at work. Was this really all he could do? The doubts made him hesitate for a moment, but even if this was really the extent of his weakness, if he had any desire to escape from this situation without being forced to take its life, he had to try harder. He had to do it, and even if he can't—he must. With a nervous conviction, Ling nodded and turned to face the creature one last time.

The light in his palms glowed an even brighter color as more roots snaked out of the soil and coiled around the creature's entire body. The roots were thin and brittle, but plenty in number and enough to keep the creature still for at least a minute. He could see the roots begin to tremble under the sheer power of the beast already, so time was short. After the final snare had been set, Ling briefly looked back over to Pimwadee and made a run for it, deep into the wood opposite of where they should've been going. "Let's go!"

    . . . . . . . . .

A few minutes had passed, and both Ling and Pimwadee had escaped the tree creature. He had run and run until he could no longer hear the predatory thoughts of that beast, and all was silent except for the gentle whisper of the forest. Out of breath, Ling fell onto his hands and knees right next to a stream as he tried to catch it, sweat dripping down his face once the adrenaline had finally worn away. He gasped and heaved until his breathing had finally found some semblance of balance.

"I... I think we're safe here," said Ling, looking over at Pimwadee, "M-Maybe we should—" his words were cut short as he realized what had happened to her earlier. Being thrown like that was probably painful, after all. Ling paused and then frowned sadly, sitting on his rear and hugging his knees as he stared into the moonlit reflection of the stream. "...I'm sorry, Pimwadee. If I had paid more attention... and told you sooner, you wouldn't have gotten hurt like that..."

Saying it out loud made it feel even worse than keeping it to himself, reassuring him that it was his fault that she had gotten hurt. He could hear the forest—they lived and breathed and thought just like humans do. He was so encaptured by the nostalgia of the woodland heart that he didn't even notice the predator getting ready to attack Pimwadee until it was too late. Seriously, how useless was he? It took almost everything he had just to escape it, so was this really the extent of his strength? The thought of his weakness being the reason things turned out the way it did tug at his tear ducts, but he didn't cry. He sat there sulking at his own reflection, eyes glossed with the threat of sobs.

Ling valued all life, but he valued the bonds he had with the people he's met too. If he couldn't protect them, how could he move on and be okay knowing that?
