Post by Ahote 6th August 2020, 9:54 pm

It was the same hour Boomslang had closed for the morning, leaving Ahote with that small lull in between before it reopened again for its evening and night services. That same afternoon, he had returned from a job within his organization. Needless to say, it was a job well done, and Boomslang operated at the quality it was known for, but Ahote seemed particularly exhausted today. There were small, yet noticeable, bags underneath his eyes, and he just seemed more tired than usual. Not only that, but the scratchiness of his throat and the occasional sneeze was also telling him that he may have picked up a mild cold while on the job as well. As a result, he wore a thin jacket despite the warm weather and wore a face mask to top it all off.

The brooding man never slept for very long, to begin with—not since he was a baby—but he seemed in particular need of a good nap right about now, and without it, he'd normally be especially irritable. However, the moment Boomslang closed for the afternoon, instead of going to sleep, he was heading somewhere else. It was an apartment complex he didn't live in, but judging by the way he navigated through it, he had been there before.

Eventually, he had arrived at a specific unit in the complex. It was Icarus's apartment—a place that his employee had taken him to once before, and Ahote had brought a gift for him as congratulations on his new move. It was a small box of chocolates and other sweet candies, however, thinking about it again, he realized that he didn't know if it was something his employee would appreciate. He bought it because he liked sweet things himself, and the design was rather cute. But by the time it came to mind, he was already at the door. There was something else that Ahote wanted to talk to Icarus about as well, but he didn't want to wait until later on tonight to bring it up, especially since it was around that time where they'd focus on something other than what was important.

Tap. Tap. Ahote gently knocked on the door with his knuckles, holding the cardboard box by the handle with a apprehensive look on his fatigued face. Now that he thought about it, he was beginning to wonder if he was even home at all?

    Tap. Tap.

Icarus' head popped up from the pillow it was buried face-down into, heavy lidded eyes even more so after being jolted awake. He was a terribly light sleeper, so whoever was at his door wouldn't need to knock again. A rustling could be heard from behind the door as he got out of bed and pulled on some baggy sweat pants. Who was at his door? He hadn't been expecting anyone, hence why he was still asleep. His neighbours were usually out this time of day. Icarus didn't have any enemies that knew where he was, so he wasn't particularly fussed other than being awoken.

Shuffling to the door, he was scratching his bare stomach and yawning when he opened the door to see who summoned him, and ended up blinking a couple times when he registered that it was Ahote. They hadn't had any plans, but the blonde was chuffed to bits to see him. He enjoyed Ahote's company, and spontaneity even more. "Boss," he greeted with a sleepy smile, though he was rapidly growing more awake. He backed away from the entryway to allow the masked man inside. "Come in. What's up?" he asked, taking a few fleeting moments to observe his guest. The brunette looked a little worse for wear, given the mask and what he could see of bagged eyes. Ill maybe? "You doing okay? Why don't you have a seat..."

Seating. Icarus trailed off as he looked around, remembering that his tiny flat wasn't exactly casual visitor friendly. The nomadic man didn't own much. If it didn't fit in a travel bag, he would either forego it or leave it behind once it was time to move on. While he had taken his few changes of clothes, including his bartender getup that Ahote would be very familiar, out of the bag and hung them in a doorless closet next to the tiny bathroom, the room was simply bear. Walls were dingy and might have once been a mint green, but now seemed like pale swamp up against the scratched wooden floor. The bed they'd put through rigorous testing remained against the back wall and the gray duvet was crumpled from sleep. A beat up table and chairs for two was against the window in the worn kitchenette and the hammock he traveled with was installed and the only other seating. It was all shabby at best, but affordable and all he really needed. If he had any complaints, it was that the walls were too thin and there was a leak in the ceiling over the shower.

Icarus didn't trust the wobbly wooden chairs, so he motioned Ahote toward either the hammock or the bed, the latter he accompanied with a teasing wink. He didn't expect anything, so the gesture was a joke, though he wouldn't turn it down if it did happen to be a surprise hookup. He moved a few steps toward a hotplate and the kettle sitting on it, starting the process of making coffee to offer his guest.

It was always refreshing to see it. That face. The sort of "oh well, whatever" air that Icarus carried and the charming face that accompanied it was like a breath of fresh air whenever Ahote saw it, and he didn't realize how refreshed it made him feel until he saw it. It was probably because of their routine 'get-togethers', but Ahote didn't mind it being that way.

Needless to say, the fatigue on his face and the mask that he donned made it obvious that Ahote wasn't his best self at the time, so it wasn't a surprise when Icarus seemed to notice when he invited him inside. The blond stepped aside to let Ahote in, and for a moment, there was a pause between the two. The brunette had to admit that he was mildly amused to see Icarus look around for this "seat" he had offered to him, and judging by the size of his apartment, there wasn't much here.

Ahote hadn't noticed it before, but the apartment wasn't exactly what most people would be comfortable living in. It felt terribly empty, with dingy chairs and walls that looked older than he was, and looking closer to a minimalist's home than anything else. It was easy to look past it when he was so focused on indulging in Icarus most nights, but now that he had a clear view, he couldn't help but take note. Right now, the brunette lived in a large bunker in the basement of Boomslang, which might be a little eccentric to others, but for a workaholic like him, living underneath your workplace seemed wildly efficient. But he couldn't help but wonder if he could afford a house right now and if it was a good idea to look into buying one. He had quite a bit of jewel in savings between Hidden Blades, Boomslang, and other odd jobs from over the years. He actually had built quite a good bank for himself, and he knew that if not a house, perhaps a really nice condo or apartment.

When Icarus gave him that likable wink, Ahote smiled weakly underneath his mask, although it may have been hard to tell as his smiles were always so small, especially when his mouth was covered. He took a seat on that comfortable bed, watching Icarus as he went to his kettle, feeling the weight of his body begin to fall to his stomach. He really wanted to crash right here.

"I'm sorry for coming without telling you. Did I..." Ahote trailed off, looking at the bed he was sitting on and how unkempt Icarus and the sheets were, "...wake you up?"

"You did. I'll have to figure out a punishment," Icarus replied with a smartass grin tossed over his shoulder. He meant no offence but also saw no reason to lie. He wasn't one to pad feelings, though he doubted Ahote would get upset either way. "I don't mind, though. I'm a really light sleeper, so something would have awoken me sooner than later," he said, pulling out a french press just as the kettle started to emit its low howl. The nice french press was rather out of place given the otherwise inexpensive theme of everything else he had, and also given his apparent distaste for owning things, but since his after-work routine had started involving coffee, he'd developed a taste for it. Expensive taste. He rarely made it at home, but now when he got the craving, only the best beans and methods would do. It was a real pain in the ass, but at least he didn't have to offer Ahote trash coffee.

Joining Ahote on his bed with two coffees, he handed one hot drink over if his guest should want it. If not, he'd place it on the crate serving as his nightstand. He sipped is own for but a few moments before he placed it on the crate and lounged back onto his bed next to Ahote. The room might be dilapidated, but the bed was quite lush. It was a carryover from his rich days. Living out in in nature with his hammock was one thing, but every time he rented a flat, he purchased the best mattress he could afford, even if he had to leave it behind.

Remembering the cardboard box his boss had arrived with, idle curiosity got the better of him. "So...did you bring me something?" Icarus teased, not truly expecting the item to be for him, but he was developing a habit of trying his best to fluster the normally stern man. Just as Ahote enjoyed seeing his lax, dopey face, Icarus liked shattering Ahote's cool to earn smiles, stutters, and glowing ears and cheeks.

"Oh? Is that so?" Ahote smiled when Icarus said that, watching him as he made the coffee with that well-kept french press of his. It was perhaps the only thing in this dinky apartment that looked like it was something he had honestly spent money on, and so were the coffee grounds he used, too. At first, Ahote was a little awkward in approaching Icarus. He had very little experience in 'dropping hints' and flirting with others, so it usually ended up being one awkward attempt or with him being completely blunt about what he wanted. Nowadays, after having done it so many times, Ahote could exercise the latter more often, and he liked to think he was getting better at the 'hint dropping' thing as well. He had never experienced anything like it before, and he was frankly quite distracted with Icarus.

Ahote was handed his coffee as Icarus joined him on the bed, comforted by the heat seeping through the mug and into his hands. However, before he could drink it, Icarus was the first to bring up the small cardboard box Ahote had brought with him. When he did, the stern man had taken it upon himself to place it in the space on the bed in between them, prying it open just enough so Icarus could see the assorted chocolates inside. They were actually notably cute—there were some topped with strawberries or raspberries, and others that didn't even try to hide the fact that they were wholesome with drawings of cat faces or bunny faces marked onto them.

"A housewarming gift... and an apology for the other night," Ahote sort of looked away when he finished his thought, quickly plucking his face mask down beneath his chin so he could hide his mouth between sips of coffee, "though maybe I should've brought you coffee grounds instead."

Ahote had kept talking, but he could feel the memories of their time out on Urban Nights come back to him like a slideshow. He recalled Iris stripping naked despite there being no instance of him stripping at all, instead, he just arrived naked. And then there was Aeluri, who was either really drunk or consumed copious amounts of some sort of drug. Baird was being... himself, and that in itself could have been a bit much. But then there was the fact that Ahote had ended up drunk himself. He never drinks, and when he does, he's so ridiculously lightweight that even after only a few shots of that Aqua, he was acting completely out of character. Or, well, in this case, he was acting too in character. In reality, he was a lot more honest and comfortable with himself and others when he was drunk than how he was when sober. If he had let himself be anything but rigid for a moment, being "huggy" and "cuddly" wasn't completely out of the picture. But, as he thought more and more about what he did specifically, his ears became pinker and pinker. It was hard to tell whether it was out of exasperation or embarrassment, though...

"I know that the other night was probably overwhelming. They really are idiots, and I wasn't myself either... so..." Ahote suddenly closed the box of chocolates and pushed it closer to Icarus, "here."

"They weren't so bad. Once I got over the shock it was easy to just go with it. Fighting it would have made it overwhelming. It was kind of like jumping into the cold ocean. After the shock wears off it gets comfortable, and if you don't fight the current you won't tire out and drown," Icarus said dismissively, followed by a chuckle. They had come on quite strong, but the evening had ended up quite entertaining. Ahote's friends were nothing like he could have ever imagined, but the man seemed to have a shocking amount of idiosyncrasies hidden away behind that all-business mask. It was interesting. "And I don't know. Maybe you were more yourself than you're ready for. It will be what it is. I certainly didn't mind the extra attention," he said, poking the tip of his tongue out for an endearingly baiting expression.

Icarus didn't say anything, but from the glimpse he'd gotten, the chocolates were actually really cute. Lavish, too. Topped with fruit or decorated in cat and bunny designs. He'd have been completely shocked about the normally rigid man's choice of purchase if not for the event that preceded the drunken haze that had followed. He'd danced to win Ahote a very large plush bear, which had been so unanticipated and random. Even thinking about it had his own embarrassed blush spreading over his cheeks, matching Ahote's faintly glowing ears.

In attempts to try and rid his face of its pink tint, he took the box and slipped a well-manicured hand into the box to snatch a bunny chocolate, shoving it into his mouth. The chocolate was of such fine quality that its shiny outer layer melted at the slightest touch, meaning his fingers now had chocolate on them as did the corner of his lips as he chewed. "Mmmmm..." he moaned while closing his eyes, forgetting just how much he loved the taste of sweets from a professional patisserie. He had no idea how much he'd taken things like these for granted when they'd been so common place in his former life. In his new, much less materialistic life, there'd been no room or jewel for these things. "Damn, these are delightful," he sighed after a few moments, reopening his heavy lidded eyes to turn their honey hues on the man next to him on the bed. Fingers picked out another one, holding it up so it hovered between them, adding more chocolatey goodness to his fingers. Slowly it inched toward the dark-headed male. "Would you like a taste?" he asked, a roguish smirk slowly revealing itself. He had full intentions of feeding it to his guest, thinking up all sorts of alternative uses for the delights held within the box.

Ahote sort of watched Icarus without turning his head as he ate the chocolates. He was a little apprehensive about if Icarus would like his gift, so he was especially attentive of him when he decided to give it a try, and to his relief, he seemed to enjoy it.

"Really? You like them? That's great..." Ahote sighed through his nose, feeling as if he were expelling a small weight from his lungs as he did so. He decided not to mention how much they cost, as he realized that most people probably didn't spend as much money on chocolates as Ahote did. Or on stuffed animals, either. But for a particularly frugal man like him, he made a lot of money and spent very little of it, and the times he did splurge on things it was usually stuff like sweets and cute items. It probably damaged whatever image people had on him before, so he usually kept his fondness of cute things to himself.

In fact, despite how blunt of a guy he was, he kept a lot of things to himself. However, when Icarus suggested... feeding him chocolate, Ahote briefly lost composure yet again. He flinched and his ears went pink... again. At first, he didn't say anything—he was just staring at Icarus with a look of disbelief all over his hard face. An 'are you serious?' sort of look. After a brief pause, Ahote decided to humor him a bit, although he did it in such a way to save face. With a quick gentleness, he'd gingerly grab Icarus's hand and pull it towards his face, carefully plucking the chocolate from his fingers with his mouth. Judging by the way he avoided looking at him during the entire process, he was somewhat embarrassed by the whole feat.

"You're in Sabertooth, aren't you?" Ahote would change the subject in a heartbeat, rubbing off a little chocolate from the corner of his mouth with his thumb and then sucking it, "I saw your marking the other night. You don't strike me as the type who'd be in a guild as ambitious as that... or being a working sorcerer, either." he looked at Icarus attentively, interested in what he had to say as he finished sucking off the chocolate from his thumb.

"Unf, those ears," Icarus snorted through his nose. Quick as anything, those ears would light up when he caught the other man off guard, or attempted anything remotely romantic. Ahote wasn't the romantic type? The blonde had wanted his guest to lick the chocolate off of his fingers, but it hadn't been all lost. Even if it seemed Ahote would refuse at the start, he did eventually pull his hand close and snap up the treat, like a Pomeranian unable to resist a treat from an unfamiliar hand. What was going on between then hadn't been anything more than a good time, but Icarus couldn't help but tease and flirt. He was charming like that.

Most of the opportunity to mess with the darker-haired passed quickly. Now it was on to more boring matters. Snacking on another sweet, Icarus lounged back onto his pillows, subconsciously rolling his shoulders as he did so. The mark between the blades didn't feel like it fit, much like how he felt like a stray hair in Sabertooth's otherwise perfectly styled wig. "It was the first legal guild I came across that didn't have weird uniforms. As you can probably tell by now, I don't like pressure and paperwork," grinned Ahote's buddy with benefits, following it with a soft yawn. "But I'm not sure how long I'll stay. Doesn't feel like a good fit, so I've got my options open...More importantly." Icarus suddenly sat back up, leaning toward Ahote with a vaguely agitated expression masked with a smirk. "What do you mean by that? You don't think I'm ambitious? And why wouldn't I be a working sorcerer? Just what sorts of opinions do you have of me, boss? Lazy and weak?" the bartender pressed, his former pale offense seamlessly blending into more good-natured harassment.

It was just the only one left, huh? Ahote didn't like any legal organization of any kind or caliber, and he disliked the people in them even more. But like many things between them, Icarus didn't seemed particularly attached to his guild. He held the sort of air that he could pack his things and leave one day and never look back. If not Sabertooth, the only big-shot organizations out there were probably Dies Irae and Rune Knights—the closest things to paperwork and pressure, more than likely.

"Lazy and weak? No. You're actually one of my hardest workers, and you never fail to satisfy, even when we're alone..." Ahote looked at Icarus, leaning toward as him as his blonde employee did the same, carefully grabbing his chin and pulling him towards his face. It was a shame that his body wasn't quite up to speed where his head was. "...But yes, I think you're unambitious. You don't have a drive for anything, and frankly, if your strength as a sorcerer was as great as your charm, I'd hire you for security—not bartending." Ahote chuckled, suddenly pushing Icarus's face away from his own as he finished. As hard of a man he was, he didn't have any boundaries when it came to teasing. Honest, blunt, and straightforward, Ahote was quick to tell what he thought was the truth.

He folded on leg over the other, plucking another cute chocolate from the box and eating it with a self-satisfied look on his face.

    Icarus

Ahote's former comments brought a wolfish sneer to his lips as his face was pulled closer. "Damn right, I do." Icarus clucked under his breath. He took a pride in compliments to his sexual prowess, as did anyone who had any skill in that department. He had half a mind to start something, since they appeared to be flirting, but just as quickly as Ahote had drew him in, he was debased and released. Ahote didn't pull any punches, which was fine, but he still let out a soft "oof" as distance grew between them.

A higher strung lad would have been far more offended by the humbling assessment, but even if his feathers ruffled a little, they quickly settled with a hangdog smile. He couldn't refute it, that was to be certain. His magic had always been problematic. His parents had forbidden him from using his weak magic. It had been an embarrassment to the family in a country where strong magic was everything. Fearing he threatened their status, they'd given him a magical item instead that gave him access to a magic much more fitting, but he'd left that behind just like he had all his ties to that abhorrent country. Icarus had embraced his magic, no matter how weak and troublesome it was. It just stung to have it pointed out once again and reminded him of home. "You got me there," he conceded, not finding it worth it to try and convince Ahote otherwise. It wasn't his way. "I'm ambitious when I need to be," was the last he'd say about it. His coffee sat forgotten on the crate and now the steam had all but ceased when his body laid back down against his pillows, head propped on one crooked arm so he could still admire the man perched on his bed's edge eating chocolate. Whether or not it was meant as a tease, Icarus couldn't help but feel a twinge of lust. But given how physical they usually were when alone, the lack of heat was telling. The other man must not be feeling his best. "You can lay down if you want to. I won't tell anyone." Icarus offered him, unsure if he'd take him up on it or not. Either way, the relaxed man had his own questions within the vein of ambitions. "What exactly are your ambitions, Ahote? Only Boomslang?"

"My ambitions?" Ahote repeated, looking somewhat surprised to be asked such a question. He stared at Icarus with a pause, and then his eyes floated up to the ceiling in thought. "I don't know. I mean—I used to, in the past. But that was a long time ago, and things change. And..."

It had been a long time since he was asked about his personal goals. When he was still in Basilisk Fang, he shared the vision of bringing the Magic Council down and society with it, and his grandiose goals inspired him and many of his former subordinates to wreak havoc upon the land. His mother's dreams became his dreams, and that eventually became his purpose in life. But it was different now. Basilisk Fang was long gone, and many of its enemies and allies vanished too. He still had the same visions, but not nearly the same taste for chaos as he once had. Not anymore. He moved on from that past, and now he was working his business as a machine. He hoarded his savings and was relatively well-off because of it, but when Icarus asked him what his ambitions were, Ahote began to draw a blank. His mind began to drift as he tried to conjure up a better answer for his question, but he couldn't.

"I'm sorry. That probably didn't answer your question, did it? Right now, I'm just trying to have a good time. It's the first time in my life that I can really do something like this, so I am." Ahote's lips cracked into a small, quizzical smile, scooting over the bed and taking it upon himself to lay down next to Icarus, his elbow planted into the pillow so he could lean up and face him. Even though he saw it so often, he really couldn't help but get captivated by his appealing face. It was that and his attitude that enamored him like this. "You wouldn't happen to have any other questions, now would you?"

    Icarus

So he was certainly one to speak about ambitions when he wasn't even sure of his own. This validated Icarus just a small bit, though he said nothing. It seemed they were both a bit adrift, trying to find their place in the world with only vague ideas to drive them. While his decisions were spurred more by Omera, Ahote seemed even less certain of what he was striving for. There was one point they could definitely relate on. "No, it didn't answer my question, but I get it. Letting loose and going with the flow hasn't always been my thing either..." Icarus spoke, though by the end the expression on his face had shifted into one of mild discomfort. He hadn't meant to say that last part. Letting others in on his old life was a self-imposed taboo, so he tried to move on from it quickly. While every other part of his carefree life was transparent as it was airy, that part of him was very heavily guarded and opaque. "Having a good time is great. Glad I could help," the blonde joked, honey eyes briefly darting off before returning to staring up into the face of the attractive brunette. He produced another roguish grin, though he did wonder if perhaps he smiled too much around his employer. Was he getting too comfortable? It'd been a long time since he'd just simply laid in bed and talked to someone this way. It felt dangerous.

On the subject of more questions, Icarus grew impish. "Oh, I absolutely do!" he enthused, trying to figure out which to ask first. After a brief pause where it was very clear that his mind was conjuring something up, he seemed to settle on something. He'd mentioned this was the first time he could really branch out and enjoy life, so the question all but begged to be asked. "Have you always preyed upon the fair haired employees of your establishment? And what did you do before Boomslang, anyway?

The more he talked, the more self-conscious Ahote became of his criticism from earlier. He realized that he might not be a hypocrite, and there weren't any contradictions in what he said, but it still felt a little off to talk about Icarus's ambition and drive when he himself had been going with the flow himself. Well, at least one of them were. When he said that this lifestyle and air of his wasn't "always his thing", Ahote couldn't help but wonder just what his thing was before all of this, but the topic rose and fell like a ball and moved on before he could ask.

However, the moment Ahote invited him in for more questions, Icarus's entire face seemed to light up in this mischievous, eager light. There was a pause for thought, and then came a question that Ahote should've but didn't expect.

"...Before Boomslang?" Ahote stared at him, drawing a blank once again. He had always surrounded himself with like-minded people or at least people who were in the criminal underworld like he was, so he never needed to come up with plausible excuses as to what his past was. If only for a moment, he felt vulnerable. What was he supposed to say? That he took up his dead mother's mantle and led a guild of terrorists on a vision for justice? That he produced weapons of mass destruction and did anything and everything to ensure their progress? That he had led his life dreaming of the Magic Council brought to ash and cinders, and still believed in some of those visions even now? It was a loaded question that he had never prepared for, and for an awkward amount of time, he was ambling in a sea of thought. "...I was a working sorcerer like everyone is these days. I did it to get by and nothing more. And no, it's just you," he blew air from his nose in a sort of silent chuckle, "Don't let it get to your head, and don't think that this is one-sided either. You have to answer some of my questions after this as well, alright?"

    Icarus

Icarus winced a little. Of course he wasn't off the hook. "Do I?" he asked, wondering if his winning charm and good looks could weasel him out of this. Judging by the vague answer he just received, it seemed this sort of talk would do neither of them much good. They were both guarded with the facade of being open, if only because they were physical and perhaps friends. Neither of them would be very forthcoming, but maybe that was the game here. They were dancing around the divide that kept them at a distance. With a sigh, he committed to the next play. "I guess this make it your turn, boss," Icarus said, still laying on his back and peering at Ahote.

He wouldn't go gently into this, though. Ill or not, no one said they had to play fair. As he subtly braced himself for whatever uncomfortable inquiry was coming, his leg slid along the sheets closer to the man laying at his side, with any luck running his foot under the edge of one of the legs of his trousers. Forming a true connection with another person frightened Icarus a little. He'd spent the last couple of years avoiding it to protect himself that even now he could feel the urge to run. Escape. It'd be so easy. If distracting him with cheeky flirts and suggestion didn't work, all he had to do was shut off the charm and become a dick. It was a switch he could flip, but he found he really didn't want it to come to that. Icarus liked working at Boomslang. Without thinking about it too much, he liked Ahote. He wasn't ready to toss it out over a few questions.

When Ahote came to Icarus's home, he wasn't planning on laying in bed with him, talking about themselves and their ambitions in life. Well, even then, talk was used lightly. It felt as if there were two guarded walls talking about what was on the other side right now, both of them bringing up loaded subjects and yet going over them briefly like it was chitchat. You couldn't learn everything about a person in one conversation with notably lusting undertones—Ahote knew that, and frankly the game was beginning to wear on him. He wasn't feeling good anyway, and he had to get back to work soon.

"Boomslang is closed tomorrow for monthly maintenance, but I don't think it'll take any longer than a couple hours. So, if you aren't busy, I'd like to go somewhere with you," Ahote mentioned, moving over from his lounging position when he felt Icarus's leg graze against him and rolling on top of his fair-faced companion with the same hard look on his face, his ears that light pink tinge once again, "I know that it's sudden, so..."

His words slurred into silence again as his mind and eyes trailed off. Ahote knew it was a bad idea, and for someone like him who had become prudish man who thought about his choices carefully in most groups, he really seemed to lose all manner of composure and control at even the smallest temptations Icarus gave him. Even with a pounding head, a fatigued body, and a mild fever he could feel building up in the back of his head, he knew he couldn't do nothing to him and leave here satisfied.

"So..." Ahote began again, quietly. A lot more than he was expecting to happen was unfolding in the short time they spent together here. It wasn't a date—or at least that what he told himself. It wasn't anything special, right? As enigmatic as he could be, he had never offered something so simple and turned this pink and awkward over it.

    Icarus

If Ahote hadn't been so close already, Icarus would have released a sigh of relief. Since neither of them seemed to be willing to bare their truths and sins today, the subject moved on to something a little more surprising but not unwanted. Ahote wanted to go somewhere with him while Boomslang was closed? Brows shifted up his head in intrigue and mild surprise, though he refrained from any teasing. Of course he wanted to comment on it sounding like a date, which wasn't something they usually did, but not totally against the rules. Neither of them had set rules, though he'd been under the understanding that this was a casual fling of the purely physical kind. Fuck buddies, friends with benefits, employer exploitation. Those types of things. And while he was his own unstated rule to not get to official or serious, he also enjoyed Ahote's company and didn't want to run him off. It was also incredibly hard to rib him about how the invite started when the other man was climbing on top of him.

Those blushing ears were always his undoing. Grinning like a naughty child that was being rewarded anyway, Icarus wasted no time wrapping his arms around the stern man, fingers slipping cheekily under his shirt. Leaning up, he placed his lips against heated lobes, nibbling lightly before finally answering Ahote's question without moving his lips very far. "Sure, sounds good," he generically mumbled, before returning to his task. He was curious about the plans, but questions about that could wait until later.

PART TWO: IT'S KIND OF A DATE?

At this point, it was hard to tell whether this inability to resist the slightest licentious temptation was his doing or Icarus's. Years of repressing sexual drive could've been the reason, but then Icarus was just flat out irresistible. Whether or not that raspy morning voice in his ear made him unravel like this for a reason or if he was just blowing off some pent-up steam was still uncertain, and it didn't really matter right now anyway. By the time Ahote felt Icarus begin to touch and tease him, he was already beginning to undress and let himself get swallowed up in this thing they had. "Right after you just woke up?" They were fuck buddies, after all. What's left to do but fuck?

    The Next Morning

Just as Ahote promised, maintenance didn't last very long. As draining and exhausting as necromancy could be, he ran Boomslang like a well-oiled machine because of it. He took inventory, cleaned the place unless your shoes squeaked with every step, and put the place back up to working condition in just a few hours. He was a powerful sorcerer now, so using numerous undead bodies to do it all wasn't nearly as taxing as it would've been some time ago, but it still required a lot of focus to control such a hivemind of the undead, and it wasn't public information either.

Even after his and Icarus's intimate moments yesterday, Ahote hadn't told him what they were going to do. In fact, after the sex, Ahote's already-poor health had finally got the better of him, and he passed out and slept for about an hour or two immediately after they finished, and then he left for work again. Even though his fever had gone down and he wasn't in as bad shape as yesterday, his health was still anything but ideal. But unless he was bedridden, that wasn't enough to stop him. Really, what was a workaholic like him supposed to do? Rest? Of course not! If at first you pass out, work even harder is what one wise man probably said. Well, as a result of his incredible work ethic, Ahote was relatively loaded with jewels. Much of his disposable income was invested back into the business, and everything else was stored as savings or just never spent at all. He lived in the basement of Boomslang, which was essentially just a bunker with a few really nice, high-quality furnishings. Ever since the disbanding of Basilisk Fang, he had to be frugal with his money and minimalistic with his lifestyle, and even though he wasn't burdened with the same circumstances as back then, some of those changes seemed to stick with him out of habit.

Before he left, Ahote had left a small note for Icarus, giving him easy directions to their destination today—an affordable and quality furnishing department store. Even though he had convinced himself that this wasn't a date, this is probably somewhere Ahote would take him if it was a date. He was the type of person who couldn't find a middle ground with the things he liked. On one hand, he enjoyed cute things and cute treats and all things cute. On the other hand, he found practicality equally enriching. Well... for him, it was. He knew that not everyone was as psyched about discounts at grocery stores or getting the very best latex cleaning gloves in bulk on Amazone. But still, after seeing Icarus's apartment more clearly that time, he was finally ready to tap into his abundant hoard of jewels to invest in a less... abysmal living space.

Standing near the entrance of the ICEA, Ahote leaned against a lamppost as he waited for his fair-faced employee.

"ICEA, eh? How practical," Icarus said upon approach, popping from behind the lamp post in the vague hopes of startling his...whatever he was. He'd flown in of course, and his eagle eyes could spot Ahote from a mile away. With any luck, his landing and footfalls had been silent.

Rounding to face Ahote properly, he wore his usual sly smile, as if he knew something everyone else didn't. It wasn't really the case usually, but confidence was certainly one of the keys to his charm. "So, if I am to understand this date correctly," the blonde started, retracting his fluffy red wings and pulling the black jumper knotted around his waist on over the wing-holes in his shirt, "you've brought me to this fine establishment to choose some furnishings?" he asked, mulling over his presumption even as he said it. Of course, he'd tease Ahote, but the implications were becoming uncomfortably clear. The issue was, what would he do about it? Nothing, probably. Making light of it was the best option. "Does this mean you're trying to keep me around or something?" Icarus asked cheekily, holding his arm out for Ahote to slip under so they could walk in together. Icarus, despite being emotionally detached as much as possible, was very tactile with those he felt comfortable. Given what he'd been doing to the sickly sometimes-brunette, he'd certainly consider the man someone he was comfortable around.

"Oh, are you feeling better, by the way? You seemed poorly yesterday," the bartender asked after his lover's condition. Ahote was grown and could take care of himself, but he wanted to make sure the businessman wasn't pushing himself too hard. Ahote could take him to ICEA, so Icarus was just as entitled to whisking him off to rest somewhere.

    You're a weapon ; and weapons don't weep

"It means that you'd ought to stop living like you're just above the poverty level, because I pay you enough to support yourself more than you do," Ahote quipped back, taking Icarus's silent invitation and letting his arm drape around him as they began to walk in. Although he wasn't expecting him to arrive from behind, scaring Ahote or at least catching him off-guard would be a difficult feat. Years of operating in the criminal underworld and coasting through life with a state against you tend to build some sort of awareness and self-consciousness after some time. That being said, Ahote was still sort of pathetic with how easily embarrassed he was.

"Oh, that? It was probably a fever from stress. It happens a lot, so it's fine—" Ahote stopped mid-sentence when he caught a glimpse at something shiny and ornate. This particular entrance to ICEA was directly connected to the kitchenware section of the superstore, and so they were greeted with a plethora of display cases with various brands of plates, cups, and other things, but the one that caught his eye was a silverware set. He quickly abandoned Icarus's comfortable arm to go over and crouch down next to the display case, staring at it with narrow, twinkling eyes. Wouldn't those look so good for Boomslang? A lot of the design surrounding that place was contemporary, and the silverware would probably be a nice addition, but he already had full sets of stuff like this already. They worked perfectly fine and they were of good quality, so there wasn't really a need to buy another set. "Oh my goood, that'd look so good..." Ahote gushed to himself, lost in the thought of buying it while he was still fawning over it. It took a second to realize that he had gotten so caught up in his own head that Icarus was probably staring at him, and if him coming up behind him hadn't caught him off-guard, this surely had. He suddenly shot up back to his feet, his expression a lot softer and pink than before as he stared down into the display case. Slowly, he pressed his hand against his eyes and let it slide down his gushing face, sighing as if to regain composure.

"Ah—ehm—so..." Ahote peered over to Icarus bashfully, "Where to first? Chairs? Dining tables?"

"Who's to say I don't have an ex-wife or a child or something I have to send jewel away to?" Icarus continued to banter, his wolfish grin probably giving him away. Or maybe it added credence to it, since he was a rather secretive man to be so charming and extroverted.

The banter would stop as his date became quite like a crow that wriggled from his grasp and swooped down on the first shiny thing he saw. And indeed, Icarus was staring at him, but not like he was being weird. It was more of an amused how cute sort of stare. Here he'd thought they were buying things for his lackluster apartment, and Ahote was drooling on some gleaming forks. Despite his wealthy upbringing, which Ahote would be ignorant of, Icarus could care less about dishes and utensils. Most aspects of his previous life were dead now. All he had were memories and aversions. Most of what remained was his taste for expensive flavors, but even that he deprived himself of. Still, though he was a different man with different priorities in life, he could support a friend with an affinity for cute and shiny things.

Icarus was just about to ask why Ahote didn't buy them for himself when the man seemed to realise himself and recover. The way he looked over at him so bashfully actually threatened to crack Icarus' devil-may-care expression, so he brought a hand up as if to suppress a cough though it was actually to hide a wavering smile and softly flushed cheeks. "Mmm," he stalled, giving himself a minute as if he was thinking, but really he couldn't have cared less. "What do you think I need most desperately? When you come over, what to you miss? We should start there, yeah?" he asked, again offering his arm like a cloak to his...whatever he was. "You're clearly the one with the better taste here."

"What I miss?" Ahote paused and looked at Icarus. It was a surprisingly difficult question to wonder about considering the other furnishing they always ended using was his bed for their various sexual encounters, and he only just recently caught a good glimpse of the state of his home. After quick and silent deliebration, Ahote once again accepted Icarus's draping arm once he decided what to look for first, leading their meandering through the ICEA pathways. "It's easy to say that I have better taste when you have nothing for me to compare it to..."

Their first stop was a section of ICEA where dining room sets were on display. It wasn't like Icarus had a lot of space, so it probably wasn't likely that he'd want something big enough to seat eight people. Actually, what did he want? The way he dressed and the way he carried himself told Ahote that he was a casual man who lived life to comfortable standards, and no more. If anything, he had a minimalist air around him. But none of that was very helpful in gauging what he liked in furniture.

"We're going to get you a set, but you probably don't want to clutter your space, now do you? So..." Ahote leaned over one table and placed his hand on it. It was a small, black, square wooden table that could seat about two or three people, and had small and beautiful grain patterns. It wasn't particularly expensive either. "Something like this? Or bigger? Ah, well, maybe it's too dark..." he placed a hand over his mouth as he wandered in a sea of thought, staring at the table with a concentrated look in his eyes. Ahote liked darker colors, but not for his furnishings. In fact, his room was actually quite light and refreshing, but he wasn't so sure what Icarus would've preferred.

At some point between all this gauging and reflection, it suddenly came to mind how comfortable he was feeling right now. Ahote wasn't a very touchy person as a result of his unapproachable demeanor and unfriendly, cynical attitude, but he hadn't really thought twice about accepting Icarus's arm like that. Now that he thought about it, this whole situation was a bit too comfortable for people who were just supposed to be colleagues with benefits—the whole 'the employee is sleeping with the boss' dynamic that seemed so romanticized nowadays. To him, this wasn't a date. This was just... well, actually, was it? It wasn't anything especially romantic—it was actually quite the opposite—but it also wasn't something he'd do with everyone.

When did he get so comfortable?

In actuality, Icarus had rich taste in furniture. Had, past tense. If he really wanted to give into his past self and dig up his old ways, maybe he could say he had better taste than his shopping partner, but it was something he had little desire to entertain. Just as he seemed to Ahote, Icarus was now a simple man who only needed or cared about the minimum. He'd made sure to alter everything about himself when he turned his back on Bellum and their toxic ways. A tree could be just as homey as a dingy flat. But, if flooding it with nicer things made Ahote feel better, then he'd roll with the flow as always. Ahote might feel like he was more grounded and Icarus could at least know his booty call was more comfortable coming over. He'd just reimburse the business man when it was time for him to move on.

"Something small, I think. Like that, yeah, and black works fine. It'll accentuate the mould," Icarus said, half serious and half joking. He didn't mind the dark colour at all, and its size and price tag were the most appealing. Goldenrod orbs observed his dark-headed lover, ever guarded and sly. Some may call him a pervert, but when a relationship was solely focused on physicality, he couldn't help but consider the more carnal implements for the new addition to his kitchen. "It looks nice with you, as well," pondered the man, tapping his chin and winking. Yes, this would hold up much better to some more adventurous fooling around than that card table he used to eat cereal. As always, his underlying goal was to fluster the man, no matter where they were. The more subtle he could be at it, the better, right?

No longer interested in the tables and chairs, since as far as he was concerned, the first option was the best, Icarus turned and wandered off in a random direction. What was he looking for? Unsure. Maybe a couch. Maybe a new bed? His mattress was fine, but it wasn't on anything substantial. In fact, it was on a rickety, squeaky frame that was held together to loosely by stripped screws that the posts knocked the wall during nightmares and special activity alike, docking him some community points with his neighbours. Maybe something more sturdy. Now that his mind was taking a more active part in what he'd intended to be an Ahote-centric process, there actually were some amenities he'd enjoy. Definitely a couch, a TV, and a speaker to play music from his iLac. He was quite fond of music, so it'd be nice to fill his apartment with some with robust enough sound to drown out all the flat noise from neighbours. The small speakers on his phone didn't cut it.

Realising he didn't know where any of these things were located, Icarus paused and again waited for his date to rejoin the party. "I now have a list of things I need you to locate and stand near for compatibility. A couch, a small TV, and a speaker that connects to my phone. Oh, and a new frame for my mattress so I won't get nearly beat up every time we fuck."

Ahote had to admit that he wasn't really expecting 'accentuate the mould' to be the words coming out of Icarus's mouth. Although they were in the infancy of their field trip, he was already beginning to assume that Icarus seemed like the type who'd be content with just being alive, and would probably be okay if had a good mattress and a cardboard box to place things on. Ahote wasn't very materialistic himself, so not only was the idea understandable, but he was beginning to accept that he'd be the one leading this venture. And of course, Icarus being the playful flirt he was, followed it up with a coquettish comment.

He was left at a loss for words when Icarus said that, staring at him with eyes that widened fractionally and a strip of pink flushed from one earlobe to the other. He usually had a pretty thick skin when it came to words and the nuances in between, but it seemed that more often than not, he was getting flustered over the simplest of things because of that blonde and that teasing mouth of his. When Icarus wandered off elsewhere, Ahote pulled out his own iLac to get the item number of the table they had agreed on and began to type down the number with that same look on his face and his mind ran rampant with questions.

Up until recently, Ahote hadn't even thought about his carnal desires, let alone romance to any extent, so this friend-with-benefit thing they had going on was bound to bring out sides of him that he didn't know he had. Frankly, it was kind of a stretch to even call him a friend with benefits, seeing as the only time they ever saw each other was at work or in bed—they didn't really have a relationship that was beyond sex and checks. But more importantly... wasn't this a little too easy? It was like every little thing seemed to get a rise out of Ahote, and at this point, he wasn't sure if Icarus was just incredibly charming or if he was just so starved for sex and flirting all this time that the littlest things could set him off. It was getting to a point where if Icarus had enticed him with a little 'physicality' outside of a bedroom, it wasn't farfetched to say that Ahote might've given in to it. Hell, he wasn't thinking much about anything but the practicality of this date until Icarus made that little comment, and now his head wandered off into space as his thumbs mindlessly tapped away at the item numbers, and eventually, he was beginning to wonder if this table could support his weight, how sturdy it was—

"—P-Pardon?" Ahote immediately squeezed his iLac and flinched when Icarus returned to him, cheekily listing the things he apparently decided he wanted to have now. The dark-haired club owner looked at Icarus with his ears a now full-pink, looking as if he could hear his thoughts just now and where they were about to go. Quietly, he scratched just behind his ear as he glimpsed back down at his iLac, retyping the item number for the table as he tried to veil his flustered and almost guilty expression beneath his dark, wavy locks. "A-Ahhh... remind me of your mattress size...?"

Ahote didn't look at him in the eyes when he said that, the small stutter in his words a testament to his fumbling composure. Beneath that dark head of his was a splash of pink that spread from his ears to the bridge and tip of his nose. It would be easy to read his apprehension as some sort of discomfort of suddenly being asked to purchase so many things, but really, it couldn't have been farther from the truth.

Seriously, what the hell is my problem? 'I liked the noise it made', like... am I some kind of pervert? And what, his neighbors could hear us all this time? So all of that noise.... oh, I seriously want to die right now... I want to crawl underneath a rock and die... I need a chastity belt...

The more Ahote thought about it, the less he could focus on copying down the item number so he could order it. As he slowly finished it, he raised a hand to his face to cover it while he continued to look downward. What was he? Some kind of horndog?

Without even realizing it, both of them had slipped into some sort of unintentional persona, even if it was a persona of truth. It was so easy for Icarus to forget and return to his bossy, rich boy ways. Just when he thought he'd killed off that bastard! The instant his last statement had left his lips, he'd tasted the demanding and haughty nature of it. He'd sounded like his father, or even himself just a few years ago. It almost made him ill. There had been a time when he and a servant would go shopping for new and useless wastes of currency, and what he'd just done had not been too far from that. Barely able to mask it behind a crooked smile long enough to meet Ahote's startled eyes, the disgust was plain on his face for just a couple moments in the seconds following. Thank Omera Ahote was having his own crisis and had his face angled toward his iLac.

Mistaking the expressions his date was making as frets over money or how demanding he'd just been, Icarus began to backpedal. "I'm not sure. It's just big enough for the both of us... but don't worry. I might not look it, but I do have money. I've just been saving it for more important things," he said, though even that wasn't the right thing to say. What if Ahote asked what the more important thing was? He wouldn't tell him. More lies would flow out of him like Omera's waterfalls, but he generally disliked dishonesty. Yet, all he did these days was lie, or at least deceive no matter how lightly. Why was he being so secretive? It's not like it'd hurt himself or anyone else to know his motives for things, yet here he was, panicking over letting the smallest bits slip. Was it to preserve the distance he kept between himself and others? Trying to keep it all easy and breezy, so he could come and go and do whatever he needed without someone influencing him? Or was he just frankly afraid to get hurt again? You can get hurt if you don't care about anyone. Yet it was natural to care. But this was all just sex, wasn't it? Such a messy line.

"But also...I don't really need all of that. The table is enough." Footing the bill for this excursion was also a source of stress. It had been easy enough to agree to this when he thought he was just pacifying Ahote and hadn't really considered how much it would cost the man. Money used to mean nothing to him when his family money was nearly endless, but now it meant the difference between life and death for some people. Her family...the other servants...that money isn't mine to spend, he thought frantically, chewing on his bottom lip. That was the real reason his flat was such a shit hole and he'd just used the crusty ass furniture it came with. That was why he only had a couple changes of clothes and why he moved around so much. Spending some of it on junk for his flat...the colour drained out of his face.

Since he couldn't really smoke right now to calm himself, he would settle for distraction. Approaching Ahote, Icarus reached out and pulled the hand he was covering his face with away, keeping it clasped. It was funny, if anything considering all the implications that had crossed his mind, he should have simply run off and disappeared. Icarus actually desperately wanted to run in this moment. If he'd been a calloused man, he wouldn't have batted an eye to piss off Ahote and take his leave. Yet he was right here messing with the very thing that was complicating his life. This man was quirky and kind, he didn't deserve to be treated that way. It was natural to play with fire, no matter how risky. Raising the hand to his lips, he brushed his lips over the pale knuckles. "I've made it hard for you, haven't I? Feel free to put me in my place."

    You're a weapon ; and weapons don't weep

While Ahote was sifting through the clutter of thoughts in his head, Icarus withdrew from his flirty demands back into the modesty he was so familiar with. His change in attitude was abrupt, so even Ahote took notice it once it happened, and looked at him with his flushed face—one part puzzled and another part bashful. His ear glowed an even deeper pink color when he raised his hand to his lips, which wasn't helpful right now at all.

God, 'hard for you' doesn't even begin to describe it. Even now, I'm... Ahote was only making himself blush even harder with this line of thought. It was clear that there was some sort of misunderstanding in his mannerisms, which was... understandable. Not everyone had such little control over their sex drive that they were beginning to look at ICEA products for how well they'd hold up during some special "physicality". And Icarus seemed so sincere too, so the dark-haired man was almost starting to feel guilty for getting aroused by his apologetic gesture.

"Listen, Icarus. I wouldn't have bothered inviting you out here if I couldn't afford it," Ahote's expression softened again as he quietly sighed through his nose. Icarus was a perceptive guy, and that was for sure. He was perfectly capable of picking up on the little nuances in people's behavior, and what he did with those observations was, from Ahote's experience, quite cheeky. Maybe that's why he was so charming? Well, regardless, something about this exchange just now was both refreshing and deeply arousing. Frankly, Ahote had reached a point where he couldn't think about the venture they came out here to see through without thinking about it, and he hated being distracted. He hated things that interfered with his plans. Gently, he reeled his hand back in from Icarus's lips and pulled the blonde's arm back around him in the position that he seemed so fond. With an arm draped around him, Ahote watched him with his tingling ears and flushed nose. At this point, he stopped trying to hide it and was more trying to squash his incredibly inappropriate thoughts at the moment. "I got the number, so let's move on to the bed frames."

Something about his intense arousal right now reminded him of Iris. All of his friends were a bunch of horndogs, but it was Iris in particular that came to mind whenever he tried to think of anything that wasn't being bent over—

Nope. Nope. Nope. Focus. Ahote repeated in his head, his expression hardening again as he tried to ignore his intense drive right now. He had never acted like this before he met Icarus, and it was hard to tell whether or not he was just compensating for years of sexual neglect or if Icarus was simply pushing all of his unique buttons. Regardless of the correct answer, Ahote definitely felt more like he was acting like himself—blunt but not terribly rigid, warm-hearted and honest—and there was something deeply uncomfortable about that. About being comfortable.

Something about that realization stuck with him. Why exactly were they here? They were really just fuck buddies in the most literal of senses, and he wasn't his sugar daddy either. He wasn't expecting gratitude or a favor in exchange for doing this, so really... why did he bring him out? The question was beginning to bug him—but frankly, his desire was a just little more overpowering right now for him to think too hard on it.
