Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
    and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
Mercury had been quite the busy bee since that fateful day in the Silent Glaciers. It had been no trouble at all for her to get back to the caverns after all was said and done, gathering the whole load of treasure up and hauling it back to Silver Wolf. Most of it she gave to the guild treasurer to sort through as they wished. The parts she kept for herself was predominantly the stuff that had been melted already -- which she simply formed into piles of gold bars -- and then a few jewels and trinkets here and there that caught her eye.

Needless to say, she was quite a bit richer than she had been before. The vast majority of what she kept for herself was stored away in a large vault she’d set up in her room, but the rest she sold for cold hard cash. A little spending spree had been in order, of course. She bought herself some new clothes and some new tech. Granted the technology here wasn’t the most advanced, but she could easily spruce most of it up with her own engineering. The bottom line was that Mercury quite enjoyed spending money. It was a luxury she wasn’t exactly used to, so why not soak in the spoils a bit?

She had also done quite a bit more research into her new friend Vandrad. He was quite the mystery, one that she greatly wanted to crack open. She had not found much about the Gren Ragnos man that he said he was searching for. Around the time of his obituary, all records of him stopped. It seemed he had died in a house fire of some kind, though obviously the validity of that remained to be seen. She had found quite a bit more on the other Ragnos, Mythal, but nothing that really tied him to Gren. The same went for Serilda, and for a recently retired general from the Knights called Branwen who seemed to be rather close to Gren back in the day.

But what was most interesting was the lack of information on Vandrad himself. She had done a bit of poking around about the man, but hadn’t found much. He had only joined Fairy Tail about a week before they worked together, and from what she could tell he had not given any sort of last name. She had tried Ragnos, of course, but that had yielded a whopping zero results. Clearly he didn’t have his father’s last name. Without knowing who his mother was, she was going to be hard pressed to find out more any time soon.

But then again, that’s what made this all the more fun.

Once she was convinced that she had exhausted her research as far as what she could do now, Mercury decided it was time the two of them went on another mission together. Making the trek down the mountain on her hover drone, she made fairly decent time getting to Fairy Tail’s guild hall. Since they were allied with Silver Wolf, it was no trouble at all to gain admittance to the main hall where guests were often allowed to come and go as they pleased. She’d never actually been there before, however, and was surprised to see it as crowded and boisterous as it was. It really didn’t seem like the type of guild a recluse like Vandrad would be interested in, but surely that just meant there was more to the place than met the eye.

Soon enough she found him, brooding in a corner and staring at a job board. Similar to their in Silver Wolf, it was plastered with all sorts of ads for various jobs that people needed help with. And there he stood, glaring at the inanimate object as though if he gave it the stink eye long enough it would simply cower in fear and hand him the job that would interest him most. She grinned and wandered over toward him.

Without a word, Mercury turned and leaned her back up against the board practically right in front of him. She was dressed vastly different now that they weren’t in a frigid climate. A bright pink tank top that was open down the sides barely covered a firm, black push up bra, which was partially exposed from one of the shirt’s sleeves hanging loosely off her shoulder around her arm. She wore a tight fitting pair of black pants with a belt to keep it snug around her hips. As before, she had a number of pouches hanging off the belt, and strapped to her thigh was the oversized pistol that she carried. Black leather boots adorned her feet, and she wore a sleek set of sunglasses over her eyes, despite the fact that she was inside, their tint just light enough that he could see her eyes through them. Now that she wasn’t entirely bundled up, he could see that her left arm up to her shoulder was covered in a number of dark tattoos that resembled gears and cogs.

Holding up a gloved hand that left her well manicured fingers exposed, she showed him a small piece of folded paper tucked between her pointer and middle digits. “I’ve got what you want right here, killer,” Mercury told him playfully. That self same devious smirk lit her face, like she knew damn well that she was probably the last person he ever wanted to see again, and yet here she was anyway.

If Vandrad never saw Mercury Arsenault again, it would be far, far too soon.

Whatever decent or positive impression she had left on him with her forwardness and her battle prowess was vastly outweighed by her carefree, fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants attitude that seemed personally constructed to get on his nerves. One minute he was admiring how well she maneuvered in combat, the next he wanted nothing more to punch her right in the face as she made some smug comment. There was a time and a place for mockery and, generally, it was for your enemies. Well, if she wanted to backtalk him like an enemy, that was fine – it just made things easier. He certainly wasn’t looking to make friends while he was in this ass backwards nation.

But unfortunately, he still needed to give the appearance that he was a fully dedicated member of the guild. The last thing he needed was his superiors taking him in a room and questioning why he seemed more interested in being outside of the guild. Getting in a verbal debate with the likes of Mura and the others seemed counterproductive to what he was trying to accomplish. So as much as he hated to do it, he needed to find a job. Now that he had proven himself perfectly capable of handling assignments with a bit of danger – if one could call those stubborn pirate spirits dangerous – he was able to pull from the lists that offered more of a challenge. And because of that, he felt absolutely no need to accompany anyone else on a job nor bring anyone in to help him. His partnership with the asinine Silver Wolf wizard had been a one hit wonder and he sought no reprisal with any new crooners who might want to ‘get to know him’.

He found himself at the job board, his arms crossed over his chest as his eyes scanned over the listings. He read each and every one carefully, taking in the fine details in hopes of finding one that stuck out for its challenging aspects. Thus far, most of them didn’t really offer a worthy cause for him to partake. Clearing out bandits was the local Rune Knight job as far as he was concerned. Investigating poisoning was hardly at his level. He sighed and rolled his eyes slightly in annoyance. If he couldn’t find a job here, then he’d just need to come back tomorrow. Maybe he could spend the rest of the day focusing on his research. There were a surprising amount of article about Mythal Ragnos, though most of them were mentions filtered off of transcripts about Serilda Sinclair. Perhaps he could see just how much access he could get on Gren’s records. No doubt most of the mission files were sealed and confidential but perhaps liaisons and former partners could pop up in the writing. Did he dread the idea of going to see Mythal? Perhaps a little. He wanted to ensure he had as much information on his side before he did anything rash after all.

He was so caught up in his own thoughts that when the body moved out of the corner and planted itself right in front of him, he glanced at it almost nonchalantly. But as the details of the smirking face and the lavender hair came into focus, he went from pensively brooding to suddenly completely in angry shock. It was Mercury – because of fucking course it was. Compared to the last time they had partnered, not that long ago, she was dressed almost completely down. Gone was the heavy jacket and cloak; now she looked more like she was getting ready to go to a concert or as if she had just rolled out of bed. His jaw worked itself into a vice grip as he took her in and as she spoke up, holding up a piece of paper in her hands, he scoffed.

"The hell are you doing here?” He asked, though he already knew the answer. She saw how she got under his skin and she was one of those people that reveled in it. Clearly she wanted to press his buttons more for her own enjoyment. He stared at her for a moment longer before he unfolded the parchment and looked it over. It was a job listing put forth by a client that lived in Magnolia, of all places. Their daughter had gone to some structure known as the Mystic Tower, which had a pretty awful history of swallowing up those that ventured inside – and that included wizards that wished to free loved ones or targets of other jobs. "Tsk. You think I care about some lost puppy that wandered beyond her means? As far as I’m concerned, she’s paying the price for her curiosity. And that reward is hardly enough to convince me to work with you again.” He was already folding the job slip back up, ready to toss it in her face and walk away.

But he paused. A tower that none other had ever escaped from, including other wizards that were even stronger than he. In comparison to the other listings he had seen on his own board, it was definitely the most tantalizing. His eyes flickered between the paper and her, weighing just how much he felt he could stomach working with her yet again for the sake of challenging this unstoppable building. Damn it – curse his lust for battle. "Alright fine. I accept. If only to see just how truly terrible this Mystic Tower is. But try and hinder me like you did last time and I’ll do much more than simply walk away.”

“A girl can’t come visit her best friend in the whole wide world?” Boy, he already looked so mad to see her. It took him a moment to figure out who she was, but the realization dawned on him like a freight train. It took every ounce of self discipline she had not to giggle at the sight of his jaw clenching and unclenching as he simply stared at her in surprise and fury. “Besides, lest you forgot: Our guilds are part of an alliance, and we’re generally free to come and go from one another’s common areas as we please. Which means I can come visit you whenever I like. Isn’t that splendid?”

He snatched the paper from her anyway and took a glance at it out of morbid curiosity if nothing else. As Mercury expected, his first read through of the job didn’t leave him very impressed. Vandrad admonished her about it, stating how little he cared about some girl that managed to get herself lost, nor for the pittance amount of jewel being offered as a reward. For her part, Mercury simply continued to lean there, casually inspecting the nails on one hand as she waited for him to catch up to her. He just needed to get past his initial disgust from her being there, read a little deeper into the situation at hand, aaaaand…

“There we go,” she commented quietly when he paused and finally caught the part that she had waged all along would actually interest him. Vandrad fixed her with a glare so hard that most others would have blanched, but as usual it seemed to do little more than incite her to more impishness. Without making any attempt to conceal his annoyance with her, he begrudgingly accepted to do the job. With the caveat that she not attempt to bar him from fighting again like she had last time. “What, you mean after you did it to me first?” she inquired of him innocently, reminding him that she likely wouldn’t have done it at all if he hadn’t quite literally pushed her out of another big fight. “Mm, I did miss the way you threaten me, though. You always know just what to say to make a woman feel all hot and bothered inside.”

Without giving him the chance to change his mind, she pushed herself off of the board and strode casually toward the exit. Once they were outside, she pulled one of her many trademark devices out of her pocket and tossed it out in front of her. It expanded into a small, circular platform of sleek but foreign design that hovered soundlessly a few inches off the ground. Not breaking her stride, she stepped onto it and the device immediately lifted her up into the air by another foot. Adjusting her sunglasses to make sure they were on securely, she flashed him a grin before the device shot her into the air.

They had a little bit of a trip to make, significantly longer than it had taken them to go from the checkpoint to the caves last time. Thankfully, between her hover device and his ability to fly, they were able to keep up with one another fairly evenly. “So how’s the search going?” she asked him candidly, her voice raising just enough to be heard over the roar of the wind as they raced through the sky. “And before you get all eremitic on me, I’m not prying for details. Just generally asking how that’s all working out for you.”

Best friend. The very words sent rippling waves of anger through his veins, combining in his core and feeding the fire of his fury. After everything that had happened between them, she had it in her mind that they were friends? Not even that – best friends. Like they’d bonded over their spelunking in the caverns of the Silent Glaciers. At what point, in all of that, had there been even a single moment where anything friendly or familiar had passed between the two of them? The closest had been perhaps the slight playfulness they’d thrown at one another but it hadn’t been fun or fruity by any design. If anything, he had simply talked down to her, trying to press her buttons like she had done to him. He paused his mental tirade suddenly as it dawned on him. That’s what it was; calling him her best friend was her attempt to keep on triggering him. She knew it would make him angry, make him act out and lash out at her. Clever bitch.

He opted not to answer her first mocking question, even as she posed the second one – after a short explanation of why she could simply come and see him. "Truly,” he remarked mirthlessly as he put his attention on the paper, now wanting to get this business over with. But unfortunately, he had fallen right into her trap. She knew that he wouldn’t give one damn about the girl disappearing and would refuse the job… at first. But upon reflection to the challenge it posed, he would feel inclined to take part if only to prove he was better than the other wizards that had failed. He finally agreed to the job, under the threatening condition that she not attempt to stall him like she had in the last job. Yet she turned it right back on him, kindly reminding him that he had started the routine of hindering one’s partner. He inhaled sharply between his teeth, already regretting his decision as she teased him about his threats and what they did to her.

"Insufferable wench…” he spoke softly, though still loud enough for her to hear. But as she pushed herself off the board and headed back the way she had come, he followed after her. He had agreed and he wasn’t about to back out just because Mercury felt the need to run her mouth again. Besides, there was still the challenge of the tower that awaited them. And if anything, she did get a bit easier to stomach when they were fighting. So the sooner they got to the mystic structure, the better. As they stepped outside, she reached into her pocket and withdrew a device, tossing idly to the ground. It opened up into a disk of sorts, hauntingly smooth and hovering of its own volition with nary a sound. She stepped onto it without breaking her gait and it rose up, showcasing its ease with carrying her about. She gave him another amused look before she rocketed into the sky, the Prince’s magic taking hold of him and shooting him after her only a second later.

As he evened himself out in the air, he tucked his hands over his chest once more and focused forward. He kept himself near her side but letting her lead by a few inches; that way she was truly guiding them to the location. As much as he hated to leave her in charge of the job, she was the one that had brought it to him in the first place. It’s not like she would lead him uselessly to an area that wasn’t part of the job description. Hopefully she knew better than to test his patience that way. She spoke up over the roar of the wind, asking him how his search was going. A low growl rumbled out of his throat as his eyes snapped over to her, ready to berate her for, once again, pressing for information. But she was prepared this time; halting him from blowing a gasket by assuring him it wasn’t an attempt to dig for details, merely one person asking another. To him, the difference was as thin as a knife’s edge.

But there was a difference. Black orbs watched her for a moment longer before he sighed, releasing his angry tension. "There is plenty of information about this Mythal character. Him and his betrothed. Articles upon articles about their achievements and successes. You’d think the two of them were national heroes or something.” The thought amused him slightly, though any indication of that only came in the form of a dry, single laugh. "I haven’t uncovered anything else about Gren. A few articles that he was quoted in but nothing significant.” He paused for a moment, weighing if he really wanted to continue his thought process aloud for her to hear. To hell with it. "I plan on circling back and looking for other Rune Knights mention in conjunction with Gren. Possible partners or colleagues – people I can track down easier. One of them might know more and set me on the right trail.”

He let that air for several seconds before he turned his attention back to her. "And how about you? Knowing you, I imagine you continued to dig for information yourself out of morbid curiosity. My question is this; were you looking for information about Gren? Or were you looking into me?”

She was actually a bit surprised that her quick attempt to assure him that she wasn’t trying to pry actually kept him from exploding at her, if barely. There was a few seconds pause as he eyed her as if trying to ascertain her true intentions, but there really was nothing to ascertain outside of what she said and eventually he relaxed. In fact, he actually told her more than she expected him to. Rather than a “fine” or a “none of your damn business”, he actually gave her an honest response.

It seemed he had tried to do a bit more digging on his own with what she’d provided him last time. He mentioned finding plenty of information on Mythal and Serilda and their accomplishments, which he scoffed at. As Mercury assumed, he hadn’t found much more of anything on Gren. There weren’t a lot of people on Earthland as adept as she was at scouring the internet for information, and she got the impression that Vandrad was not one of those people. That much had been clear after she’d done a relatively simple search that even a child could have performed and yielded more information for him than he’d had before. Still, he was trying as best he knew how. Or at least, as best he cared to.

There was a slight pause where she figured he was going to leave it, and for her part Mercury simply nodded her understanding. Yet he kept up the habit of throwing curveballs at her and continued to speak, despite his obvious hatred for her and wanting her to stay out of her business. It seemed his next step as he’d planned it was to go back over some of what he’d found in search of other people he could try linking back to Gren. An intelligent move. She’d done it herself, and apparently was currently one step ahead of him in his own search.

Mercury was in the process of trying to decide if she should reveal what she’d already found to him or not when he pressed his own questions. He was pretty straightforward with his assumption that she had continued to do some digging on her own time, and though she grinned her pleasure at his already knowing her so well, she still responded with as much directness as he had. “A bit of both, of course,” she admitted. “Though I’m sure you’ll be happy to know I found more on Gren and company than on you. In fact, I found next to nothing on you, but that’s alright. I enjoy a bit of mystery.”

Reaching her arms up above her to stretch them, Mercury kicked her feet out from under herself and plopped down on the disc where she could recline a bit more leisurely for the rest of the trip. “As far as Gren goes, I scoured Fiore’s databanks pretty deep, but next to nothing exists past his obituary. If he is alive as you’ve been lead to believe, he’s done a damn fine job of hiding himself… which means that anyone who knows him that knows he’s alive is also keeping their lips firmly sealed. Not that I’m trying to discourage you, but it’s something to keep in mind. Secrets are rarely kept that tight lidded by everyone involved, so if you ask the wrong people you may wind up painting a target on your back.”

Her tone when she said that last bit didn’t sound like it was necessarily coming from any place of concern or suggesting that he couldn’t handle that. Rather, she was merely stating a fact for him to take into consideration before he committed to his next move. “That being said, there was only one name that came up pretty regularly in what I found on Gren’s years before his reported death: Branwen Frane.” Mercury tugged a smaller, more hand sized version of her tablet out of a pouch and tossed it to him. Assuming he took the time to turn it on, he’d find copies of all the articles she’d pulled up in her search for Gren and his associates, starting with one that was about both Gren and Branwen.

“He recently retired as a major with the Rune Knights and is spending his time with his wife, Aster, who is also retired from the knights. From what I could gather reading over these, Branwen and Gren were pretty close friends. And while I couldn’t find anything directly connecting Mythal to Gren, I did find a connection elsewhere.” Leaning a bit to the side, she guided her hover disc closer to him so she could reach over and tap on the screen a couple times. What she pulled up was a short biography that someone had written about Serilda shortly after she’d been appointed as the Goddess of Conviction.

“It seems that Serilda was trained and mentored from a young age by Aster, Branwen’s wife. Call me crazy, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that a woman trained by the wife of Gren’s best friend happens to be marrying a man with the same last name.” Mercury pulled a file out of a pocket and gently smoothed out the edge of one of her fingernails as she let Vandrad think that tidbit over.

Vandrad had to be very careful how he mentioned the steps he took in his own investigation. While it hurt his pride to have to seem like he was technologically inept, he knew the truth would create another bread crumb trail that Mercury would surely follow. The truth of the matter was that any research or information he ever needed was generally found out separate from him. As a royal and as an officer of the military, he never really had to do a lot of information gathering himself. It was always found out by servants of the house or the soldiers under his command. But he couldn’t rely on that anymore; he was operating as his own agent and that meant he had to do his own research. Come to find out, he was quite basic at it.

But he couldn’t tell her that. The minute he let loose that he wasn’t used to having to scour the Lacnet himself, she would be able to narrow down her search further. It was clear and evident that she was curious about him, about where he had come from. Based on the minimal observation he’d had of her, he assumed it was just her nature. And the admittance of his experience would give her plenty to work with. His only benefit at the moment was that Vandrad was a common Bellum name, as his mother sought to make him seem as basic as possible at first. So instead, he needed to look like he was an absolute idiot when it came to doing proper digging… which, in a way, wasn’t an absolute lie. Still, it made his pride squirm and churn in annoyance.

He had thought about giving her a relatively stubborn answer. It seemed easier in terms of ending the conversation sooner rather than later. But if she was asking, he had an inkling it was because she had something to contribute. Shutting her down swiftly may have resulted in her finding a way to tantalize and tease him about what she knew. That sounded more insufferable than opening up the dialogue for a couple of minutes, just to see what she had found. But his own assumptions about her researching him were correct as well and, to her credit, she admitted that she had scoured for both Gren and himself. It would have been a relief to hear that she hadn’t found anything tangible on him but he wasn’t entirely sure if she was telling the truth or not. She had no reason to lie… other than to hit him with knowledge later.

Her own search had resulted in about as much detail as his had and her conclusions were fairly in line with his own. If Gren was alive, the people that knew about it were quite tightlipped, if there were even others beyond himself. Sightings and rumors were as concrete as the wind without solid physical evidence to back it up. As an added caveat to her train of thought, she offered him a bit of advice – that digging too deep into hidden business was likely to attract attention itself. She didn’t say it out of any concern for his well being or hinting that he was getting in over his head. It was more the observation a scientist might make in the long winded theory of their hypothesis. And frankly he understood and agreed. That was why he was trying to avoid direct confrontations at the moment. That and anyone that had known Gren and laid eyes on Vandrad would surely make out the similarities almost immediately.

But Mercury had found something he hadn’t; a name of a comrade. He leveled his gaze on her as she pulled out a smaller tablet and tossed it to him. The Prince pressed the button to turn it on, the information popping up right to the front of the screen. Several articles were pinned but the one at the forefront was one about Gren and Branwen Fane, a longtime confident of the supposedly dead Rune Knight. A recently retired major with a wife that had also been part of the Rune Knights. It seemed that Gren and Branwen had worked closely together for some years and were friends outside of service. A fresh connection but the one that followed it was even more curious. As Mercury floated closer to him, she tapped on the screen and switched to a different page. Mythal’s bride-to-be, Serilda apparently had been put under the tutelage of Aster Fane when she was younger. That couldn’t have been a coincidence and she agreed.

Serilda and Aster, Branwen and Mythal… the connection there seemed to hint at something deeper. Was it possible that Mythal was, in fact, Gren’s son? Perhaps when Gren had died, either realistically or faked, Mythal had been taken in by Branwen and through him and his wife, had eventually met Serilda. It seemed more plausible now than it did before. Did that mean he had a brother or a half-brother? Yet despite all the wonderings he had now about his own family situation, his gaze slowly lifted from the tablet to look over at her, casually using a file on her fingers. "Just who the hell are you?” He asked her, his gaze narrowed. Here she was, putting together all these pieces seemingly for no reason. It wasn’t out of the goodness of her heart, that much he was sure of. And while he wasn’t prone to caring about other people’s histories or stories, she had proved an odd curiosity.

Mercury knew she had given him quite a bit of information to think about, which was why she busied herself with the file to give him time to ponder. Well, that and she was developing a small hangnail that she wanted to get rid of. In truth, she didn’t really expect him to say anything at all, not even thank you. Gratitude had been hard enough on him last time, and that was before she’d pushed enough of his buttons to make him loathe her very existence. So really, she expected the conversation to die, or perhaps for him to ask one or two follow up questions about some of the stuff she’d found.

Instead he asked her who she was. Mercury blinked and turned to look at him. For once there was no smirk on her face, if only briefly, as she danced with her confusion. However, it didn’t take longer than a second or two for her to understand. She was probably strange, if not suspicious, to him, being some random stranger that waltzed into his life and suddenly found a way to answer quite a number of questions in his life. Things he had probably been struggling with for some time now were almost effortlessly put together by her -- or at least, larger pieces of it. So he wanted to know who she was; who she really was.

Her smirk returned slowly, though this particular look had a hint of… something in it. Darkness, perhaps. “You have your secrets,” Mercury told him simply, “I have mine.” It was her respectful way of letting him know that, like him, she wasn’t simply going to go into her life’s story just because he asked.

Still, that didn’t mean that she had to be totally mum on answering his question in some form. He’d been a mostly good sport since they met, and Mercury could more than understand if he had concerns about some unknown woman trying to unravel all his secrets. At the very least she could do something to assure him that she wasn’t a threat to him. “I’m a lot of things,” she said with an honest tone, turning back to her nails. “Scientist. Engineer. Mage. I’m still getting used to the Mage one, admittedly. Smart ass.”

She winked at him on that last one, continuing her trend of showing no remorse for some of her more carefree behaviors. “The honest truth though? I’m no one of any great consequence. If you’re concerned about me being a danger of some kind, know that I have no vested interest in you and your story outside of my unbridled curiosity. I see a puzzle, and I like to put it together. I smell a secret, I like to unravel it. It’s satisfying to me. Cathartic, even.”

Mercury shrugged. For a moment it seemed like she was going to stop there, but in the interest of building a better rapport with the man, she decided to indulge him with a bit more. He had been accommodating to her a few times, more than he had to be, so it would only be respectful for her to return the favor. So the lavender haired woman spoke up again, her tone more plain and serious than any time before now. “Like you, I have my own personal… agendas, so to speak. My own journey, my own questions… my own enemies.” An almost malicious gleam flicked through her gaze, causing her light smirk to take on a more unsettling expression than she’d shown so far.

With a blink the look was gone, once more replaced with her more typical jauntiness as her tone lightened back up. “But, none of those things overlap with my time or interest with you. Suffice it to say that I am simply a woman that enjoys getting into a bit of trouble and has a sense of curiosity that will probably get me killed sooner rather than later.” She shot him a toothy grin.

So here they were, coming to a head that had been charging towards them since the first time they met. There hadn’t been any doubt, between the two of them surely, that Vandrad’s curiosity over her intentions, her motives and her moves had only heightened the more and more he saw of her. It wasn’t a vested interest in any capacity of friendship or romance or anything trivial like that – but it was certainly an inquisitiveness to what she had to gain from doing all of this. Vandrad had no problem sitting there and processing the possibilities himself; in most cases, he much preferred to simply work through the problems all by his lonesome. But at the moment, she was there and the words sprang out from his mouth.

Apparently, she was not expecting that. While it was only a beat or two of surprise, it was still there. He’d clearly caught her off guard, which was no surprise. Given that he had insisted and pressed upon not wanting to know much about… well, anyone. But she would catch up; of that he had no doubt. As he watched, her smirk returned – though it did carry something a bit darker with it. And she essentially repeated what she had said to him in the Silent Glaciers. She had her secrets and he had his. She felt no inclination to let him in on her, much like he had very sternly told her he had no intention of letting her deeper than she already had. But there was the fact that, unlike him, she did know a bit more about his situation. Vandrad wasn’t the one to complain or whine for fairness but it was a significant symbol of just what kind of person Mercury was.

Or so he thought. He had assumed that was going to be the end of the dialogue but instead, she opened the door just a bit more – if only to prove herself far more mysterious. Stating that one was a lot of things was a general sweeping comment that quite literally anyone could make and it did not impress him that she had started that way. But she elaborated, explaining that she was a scientist, an engineer and a mage. She even added that she was still embracing the new title and existence of being a mage. So she was not used to having magic then? That was no surprise; a lot of what he’d been taught in Bellum was that those that focused on the sciences rarely involved themselves in magic. Whether it be by choice or nature, their calling came to the development of invention. These were the people that his family, his entire nation, viewed as nothing more than worker bees. Those that possessed magic and utilized it were the superior race; because that’s what it came down to. Wizards and non-wizards weren’t even of the same ilk. At least, that’s what most of Bellum believed.

Owning up to being a smartass was not the same as apologizing for being one. Her being aware that she was a pest only seemed to make the fact that she was one even more agitating. She intentionally went out of her way to push the line. At the very least, at least she was honest about it. But she continued in her explanation, now seemingly wanting to put him at ease over any concerns he may have had. She proclaimed herself as unimportant – that she wasn’t dangerous to him or his journey. It was simply curiosity that had led her to investigate both him and his agenda. The scientist in her couldn’t let an unresolved puzzle without taking a crack at it. Once again, the notion was genuine but that didn’t discourage him – though that was hardly her fault. "Great or not, everyone is of some consequence,” he grumbled, in a tone that conveyed such words weren’t meant to be complimentary. "I’ll make my own judgements as to who is or isn’t a danger to me.”

As far as he was concerned, no one from this nation could be trusted. He wasn’t even entirely sure if the man who was his father could be fully believed either, should he happen to find him. She continued, apparently in the sport of further building some kind of rapport with him, and explained that she was in Fiore for her own reasons that were just as mysterious and guarded as his own. Given that she had only been here a few months and that look that had briefly crossed her face, that didn’t surprise him by much. She once again assured him that anything involving her own focuses had nothing to do with him and even admitted that she enjoyed getting into trouble and that her own curiosity would likely be the end of her.

He stared at her for a few seconds, processing everything she had said. Then he snorted in his own amusement. "That’s all very interesting, woman, but you got one thing wrong,” he stated simply. Slowly his mouth pulled back into a smirk as his eyes flashed with something akin to excitement and violence. "Keep pressing your luck with me and your sense of curiosity will be the least of your worries.” It was a hardly veiled threat once more at her, a warning sign against pressing his buttons again. Yet there was a playfulness to it – as if he knew, by saying it, that it would invite her to act like the smart ass she was by her own admission. It was hard to tell but either way, it was the same look he had given her when he’d invited her to join him in the fight back at Silent Glaciers.

As if to say here’s the game; are you sure you want to play?

“Fair enough,” she remarked to him when he informed her that he alone would judge who would and would not be of concern to his life. Mercury certainly wouldn’t hold a grudge against him about that. She understood paranoia and suspicion far more than she led on even now in what was proving to be a remarkably open and honest discussion. By the end of it, he considered her briefly before giving an amused snort. It was then that he informed her that if she continued to test him, she would have a lot more worries on her hands that what mere curiosity could provide her.

And oh, the delicious smirk on his face as he threatened her with such cockiness. Her own grin settled into a devilish expression, her emerald eyes dancing. “Is that a threat or a promise?” Mercury asked him, her tone more than a little seductive. Whether he meant it as one or not, she was once again opting to take his dark warnings as an invitation. Did she want to play? Oh yes, she really, really did, and he was doing nothing but making her want to press him even further just to see what would happen.

After a little bit of travelling, they finally came upon it: The Mystic Tower. It was a grand looking structure with a single tower that seemed to pierce the sky, surrounded by a large stone wall. The tip of the tower itself was brightly illuminated like it was a miniature sun, a display that was both painful and mesmerizing to behold. Even wearing sunglasses as she was, Mercury had to shield her eyes a bit and couldn’t look at it directly. Her magic squirmed pleasantly inside her from the light, however, as though it were rejuvenating her despite the fact that she wasn’t in need of it.

Once they were within a decent range of it to see it without risking setting off any magical alarms, Mercury brought her hover disc to a stop. She could already feel the energy in the air surrounding the place, and it was pretty damn powerful. A little caution wouldn’t be undue. “Alright, killer. How do you want to do this?” As she talked, she swapped her visual settings to infrared and pulled her sunglasses down for a moment, trying to see if she could pinpoint any bodily locations within. She wasn’t surprised to find that the whole area was just one giant ball of red heat. Light didn’t always necessarily mean warmth, but in this case it was true.

She pulled her sunglasses back up. “While I’m all down for kicking down the door and storming the castle, guns blazing, we can’t forget that the reason we’re here is still ultimately to find that kid. I doubt it would go over well for either of our guilds if we got her killed in the process, even if she does deserve to be stuck here.” From the tone of her voice, he could easily collect that Mercury had about as little interest in saving the wayward daughter as Vandrad did, but they signed up for a job and if there was one thing she took pride in it was her reputation.

It seemed they had reached a place of mutual consideration, at least as far as Vandrad was concerned. They’d discussed a little about themselves – or rather, she had done a lot of conversation on both her part and his. And she had revealed a little bit more about herself than perhaps he was expecting. It did not mean that she wasn’t going to try and twist his knobs and press his buttons again. And by even keeping the door open a little, which he did by smirking and idly threatening her, he was sure she would bust through it once more. But Vandrad stubbornly convinced himself that if was aware of such things, if he was the one dealing the metaphorical cards, he was in control.

She took the bait fairly easily, asking him if he was threatening her or making a kind of sick, perverted promise. Clarifying would have been simple but rather than do that, he let the answer remain open ended. He kept his gaze on her for a bit longer before he pulled it back towards the horizon, opting to remain focused on the task at hand and let her imagination run wild with whatever she wanted. Who was he to rob her of her fantasies? That’s what it would remain as far as he was concerned – a fictional construct of what she hoped or wanted to happen. She would not touch him unless he gave consent and he had no intention of giving consent whatsoever.

It wasn’t that much longer before the structure came into sight. As it rose out of the skyline, its brilliant form breaking the even keel, even Vandrad was surprised at how impending it felt but not necessarily in a bad way. It rose from the ground like a mighty scepter of kings, piercing the ocean of sky. A stone wall encompassed the grounds around it, a meager attempt to keep intruders out… or perhaps, most realistically, in. And at its top was a glowing ball of light as bright and radiant as the sun itself. It hurt to even tip one’s head to look near it but Vandrad couldn’t deny that every instinct in him told him to stare directly into its magnificent core.

They came to a stop just outside it’s perimeter, to avoid any magical traps or signals revealing their arrival. The air was palpable with the magical energy that seeped into his body at an alarming rate. The Prince was used to absorbing more ethernano from the world around him than other people but this was surprising. It warmed his body all over, sending a comforting wave through his veins and causing his brain to slow. Was this the power of the sun? Was it that creation at the top of the tower that granted this… strength? He flexed his hand a few times in wonder, staring at it absentmindedly. It took him a moment to realize she had spoken to him, asking him what the game plan was.

Before he could answer right away, his mind still rising out of the fog, she casually reminded him that they were here for a girl. As much as Mercury was fine with storming the breach, the damage they could cause could cause the life of the one they had come to rescue. But why would they want to rescue anyone from this feeling? "What?” He snapped, more annoyed that she had pulled him out of his trance. But as her words sunk in with more clarity, sanity clicked back in and he gave a small shake of his head. "Right uh… do we have some kind of… visual, picture of what she looks like?” He couldn’t recall if there was a picture on the job sheet at the moment. In fact, his memory of the job was hazy too.

When she confirmed what the girl looked like, he nodded softly. "Maybe we blow a hole in the midway section there,” he said, pointing near the middle of the tower. "Large enough for us to get in but not enough to topple the tower. Whoever comes to the defense, we take them out save one. That one we’ll question to the location of the girl. Once we have that, it’ll be easy to simply break through each level until we find her. After that we should des…” His voice trailed off for a moment. Why would he want to destroy the tower? Another quick shake of his head. "Destroy the tower. Get rid of these ingrates once and for all.”

She eyeballed Vandrad slightly when he snapped at her. Not that him snapping at her was unusual, of course, but more because she hadn’t really given him a reason to. It was like he hadn’t even heard her at first, like he was distracted. It seemed even a tough guy like him could be captivated by the sight of such a beautiful, imposing structure.

“Yeah, right here,” Mercury told him when he asked if there was anything to go off of to identify the girl they were there for. She pulled out a second piece of paper that looked as though it had been folded up along with the original job posting. It was a picture of a young girl, a teenager really, with blonde hair and chocolate eyes. “Her name is Jenna. And from the things her parents described it’s entirely probable that she’s not necessarily locked away in some cell. They receive letters from her, in her handwriting, going on about the sun or something like that. She may have come here voluntarily, and could be part of the forces guarding the place.”

After giving it some thought, he proposed starting about midway through the tower and blowing through enough to get them inside without risking the integrity of the entire building. And it would be enough of a ruckus to draw attention from whoever was guarding the place inside, of which they could simply wipe out all but one witness to tell them what they wanted. He stuttered a bit when he started talking about destroying the tower, which drew another look from her as he shook his head. Interesting.

There was definitely something going on here. Mercury wouldn’t claim to be an expert on Vandrad by any means. They’d barely spent more than the equivalent of a full day’s time together, after all. But she could definitely say that he was acting… odd. Like something was bothering him. Perhaps there was some truth to the theory that the tower called certain people? If that were the case then surely she would be more susceptible, right? Being a slayer with an affinity for light should have made her more heavily drawn to the place, or so she figured.

Then again, it wasn’t like she really understood magic, and Vandrad didn’t seem the type to let something like this beat him. He’d probably be fine. He’d probably also be angry if she suggested that the inanimate object that no one has ever escaped from may already be trying to establish its dominance over him. Better to just leave him until she was certain that there was an issue. And frankly, all Mercury probably had to do was just get him to fight as that would probably give him enough focus and adrenaline to combat the weird magic of the place.

“Sounds good to me,” she told him cheerily. Pulling out her pistol, Mercury intentionally slipped off the end of her disc and began to plummet toward the ground. The disc, however, zipped down after her and easily scooped her back up beneath her feet where she could stand at the ready again. Zipping off toward the building, she picked a spot somewhere in the middle at random and fired a single shot out of Mercy.

Instead of the traditional magical bullets, a golf ball sized device smacked into the side of the building and exploded like a miniature grenade, leaving a gaping hole several meters wide. At the last second, she threw herself from the disc and dove into the hole, rolling across the debris covered ground and coming up to her feet in an instant at the ready. The disc folded itself up in the air and deposited itself into one of her pouches without her paying it any attention.

A few people had been nearby when her attack struck, and they crowded around the place now, coughing from the dust. They were all wearing mundane robes of some kind in cream with a little gold lining, but it was the same outfit on all of them. Like some kind of uniform, maybe? Her eyes scanned through the dust and quickly performed a digital reading of each face in the area to see if the structure of any of them matched the picture of Jenna. None of them did. Good, that meant she and Vandrad could string these puppets however they wished.

With a reckless grin, she shot out of the dust and into a group of four initiates that had almost fully recovered from the breach. They scrambled to ready themselves for battle, their hands and feet suddenly beginning to glow with sunlight that bolstered their strength and speed. Mercury didn’t necessarily claim to be any kind of master at martial practices, but such arts meant very little when presented with a bullet to the head, nine times out of ten.

The four of them quickly moved to flank her on all sides, as Mercury casually stood in the middle with her gun resting on her shoulder. “Hi there,” she told them, as though they were just having a casual chit chat about the weather. “Could anyone here kindly point us toward whichever of you lot is most susceptible to bullying and peer pressure? I’d like to know who to let live.”

Rather than answer, they started throwing punches. Mercury dodged and tossed a handful of small drones in the air. The drones instantly came to life and started relentlessly zapping the initiates with highly charged volts of electricity. The attention of the initiates was quite violently pulled away from Mercury herself as they fought to destroy the floating devices that were causing them so much pain.

Meanwhile, Mercury was busying herself with inspecting their faces, trying to determine who would be the most fun to play with once everyone else was dead. “Hm. Not you,” she remarked idly, raising Mercy to blast one initiate through the temple at point blank range. Moving on to inspect the next person, she seemed almost bored or disappointed. “Eh… yeah, not you either.”

Another shot, another body. Soon there was only one of her victims left being hopelessly paralyzed by all of her drones at once. “Yeah, this lot’s no good,” Mercury called to Vandrad candidly, slipping the barrel of Mercy under the final initiate’s chin and blasting his brains out from under his jaw. “What about you? Anyone look promising?”

Vandrad glanced at the picture of Jenna, memorizing her face to the best of his abilities. On most days – hell, even an hour ago – he could have had no problem. But this strange fog had settled onto his head and it made things a bit more blurred than normal. He gave his head another decent shake as Mercury broke down some of the finer details to the girl’s plight or lack thereof. It sounded like she wasn’t being held against her will, that she may have come and joined the ranks of the tower’s members of her own volition. And why shouldn’t she? There was such a feeling of calm and strength and intoxication that came from being near the tower. Worries and fears that plagued the mind seemed so far away when one was near this beacon of holiness and divinity.

Those were strange thoughts. They felt altogether different from how he normally felt… well, generally all the time. He wasn’t sure how to proceed with them lingering in his mind and he didn’t want to let Mercury know that something was bothering him. Instead he forced his normal way of thinking to the forefront, in hopes that his simply by beating the subject over the head with stubbornness, he would win out. She agreed to his plan, happily even and then after brandishing her transforming pistol, she stepped off her disc and broke into a free fall. He watched her go, followed speedily by her device, rolling his eyes at her flair for the dramatic. Slowly he floated after her, continuing to focus more on his own thoughts than the ones that were nipping at his mental blocks.

She aimed her pistol and fired, releasing a grenade of sorts at the side of the tower. The walls practically evaporated within the heart of the explosion, opening up a sizable hole in the structure. As she dove through the new entryway, he followed after her quickly. As she rolled across the debris, Vandrad curled up near the ceiling of the room and then floated down to the ground, his arms folding over his chest as he settled into place. Several of the initiates had been caught up in the explosion of dust that had kicked up from the initial attack, the sounds of hacking and complaining echoing in the room. Mercury emerged from the smoke to confront four of the cultists while a small group of five marched towards the Prince. Sunlight poured over their limbs and coalesced onto their hands and feet, granting them additional strength and speed no doubt.

He glanced between the five of them idly as they closed in on him. "If anyone wishes to leave alive, you’ll tell us where Jenna is now,” he said simply. His brow furrowed in concern at his own words; why the hell was he offering the opportunity for escape? The plan was to take down all but one and though Mercury was clearly toying with her prey, he had no intention of being as playful. Yet here he was, offering an ultimatum. Luckily for him, none of the group seemed interested in chatting or listening to him – though he did see a few eyes waver in confidence. So they needed a strong showcase to be convinced then. In an instant his Empowerment form took hold, granting him golden hair and an emerald gaze that promised death. That’s when the group paused in approach, causing the Prince to smirk slightly. "What’s the matter? Scared of something a bit brighter than your precious sun?”

He didn’t wait for an answer. He lurched forward, planting his fist into the closest cultist’s chest. His speed pushed him forward a step before he slammed his feet onto the ground and jerked his body downwards, piledriving the cultist into the floor with a sickening and bone-breaking crack. The burst of action broke the other four from their reverie and they all turned at once, reenergized and ready to fight. Vandrad turned on his heel and caught an incoming punch from one of them by the wrist, gripping the flesh tight. The heat coming from the initiate’s hand pressed against his glove but that only caused him a nanosecond of pause before he yanked the cultist towards him and brought up his other hand, smashing the elbow of his opponent with such strength that his entire arm bent the absolute wrong way.

As that cultist wailed in agony, Vandrad turned and flung his leg out, sending a kick into the stomach of a charging cultist. As the initiate curled over from the air being driven from his lungs, Vandrad grabbed him by the head with both hands and yanked him sideways, ripping him from the ground. He spun around, using the injured cultist as a weapon to smash into the other two initiates before they could get too close. With the other pair now on the ground, Vandrad slammed his foot down and stopped his rotation while also letting go over the cultist’s head, just in time to send the stunned and dizzy idiot flying through the hole he and Mercury had entered in.

He marched over to one of the cultists as they struggled to their feet, throwing a wild strike in an attempt to get Vandrad away. Instead, the Prince caught the punch by the forearm and then took hold of the limb with both hands. He quickly twisted the appendage back around so that the initiate’s own hand was facing their face and then slammed it full speed into their forehead. Down they went but Vandrad wasn’t done, repeatedly beating the cultist with his own fist until there was just a mass of blood and bone chips where his face once was. He slowly stood back up just as the last uninjured cultist tried to charge him. He turned just enough to bring his hand up and out, his fingers splayed and facing the ceiling. Surprised, the initiate try to stop as he came face to palm. And that’s when Vandrad released a beam of energy, vaporizing the face of the last enemy. Smoke sizzled out from the cauterized neck of the cultist before the corpse dropped to the ground uselessly.

All of this had felt wrong. His mind was throbbing intensely, causing him to wince and shake his head. The light from the hole seemed brighter than usual but not as bright as the most holy sun. And these followers, these innocent believers, had simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time. He tried to shake the thoughts out and luckily for him, the screams of the last living cultist brought him out of the daze. Growling, he stomped over and grabbed the screaming man by the throat, lifting him up off the ground. "Jenna. Where is she?”

The man blubbered, spittle and tears dripping off his chin as the pain of a horrendously broken limb overwrote his ability to think. Vandrad squeezed his neck tighter. "Tell us where she is and I’ll get rid of the pain.”

That was a promise worth following, apparently. “U-U-Upstairs. W-with the Archmage,” the man babbled out softly.

Without so much as a thanks, Vandrad jerked his hand and snapped the cultists neck, ending his life once and for all. "She’s with the Archmage,” he repeated to Mercury, his voice even more emotionless than usual.

Mercury really hadn’t been paying as much attention to Vandrad during the fight as she probably should have been, all things considered. She was pretty focused on dealing with her own fight, really only catching the last bit of his own as he practically vaporized an initiate’s face off. Her grin furrowed into something much more akin to concern or suspicion as she watched him mirthlessly get the information they needed out of the remaining initiate before crushing his neck.

Her partner affirmed the man’s dying words, that Jenna was with an Archmage, but it was said with such emotionlessness that she immediately knew that something was wrong. Where was the battle lust? The arrogant taunting? The Vandrad she knew so far loved few things more than beating the shit out of other people and proving his superiority while rubbing it in their faces. This was not that person. He was definitely being affected by whatever magic was radiating in these walls.

But the question was: What exactly could she do to help him? He was far too proud to just bring it up to his face. Even if he knew he was having an issue, he probably would never admit it to her. At worst, depending on how far he’d already been captured, he would turn violent on her for confronting him about it. Mercury was fairly certain she could take him in a fight. She’d run calculations in her free time based on what she’d observed of his fighting and power on their first mission, but like with any statistical data there was a margin for error and they weren’t so far apart in power that she was guaranteed to beat him.

Perhaps there was a way she could draw his attention to it without directly calling him out? That seemed the best way. Fixing her smirk back on her face, she started teasing him. “Don’t tell me this place is boring you already. What’s the matter, Vandaddy? These kids not doing it for you? Why don’t you come over here and maybe I’ll improvise that reward I still owe you.”

Mercury wanted to keep him just grumpy enough to stay focused on reality without being so pissed at her that she became a true enemy in his eyes. She could have done something really drastic to try and snap him out of it, like shoot him. Or kiss him. The last one sounded hilarious. Instead, she tossed some playful flirts and teases his way, looking to dig under his skin and sit there like an irritating burr that couldn’t quite be located. Her gaze looked him up and down like she was once again enjoying the sight of him with his transformation on and his clothes tight -- which in all honesty, she was -- and waggled her brows at him a little in a suggestive fashion.

Whether or not that got him to snap out of it a bit, they pressed forward to continue their search upward. By now the whole tower should have known they were under attack, and it wouldn’t be long before someone else came to confront them. And sure enough, they had only managed to run up a couple flights of stairs before a group of five wizards cut them off on a landing. These were dressed slightly nicer than the ones they’d just fought, their robes showcasing larger quantities of gold in them, and appeared more at ease with the idea of stepping into battle.

“Praise the sun!” one of them cried, extending his hand toward the pair of them. From his palm shot a burst of white hot sunlight that should have incinerated whatever it touched. Mercury’s instincts, training, and programming all kicked in at once, and she reached out and caught the bolt of energy with a swift snap.

The apprentices stared in a mixture of wonder and horror as she held the ball of light in her hand, where it shone like a star. “What, you mean this sun?” she asked them candidly, preparing herself to mock them a bit. “I don’t see what’s so special about it. It’s just a bit of light and heat. What’s worth obsessing over?” She tossed it up and caught it again like a baseball before looking the enemy mages in the eyes with a wicked smirk and crushing the energy inside her fist. Not that anyone would be able to see it, but the energy was absorbed into her flesh, boosting her strength.

“You kids need a hobby change. May I suggest crochet?”

Well, all the mockery and blatant destruction of their sunlight had more than ticked the group off. They all came running at the two of them, limbs and bodies glowing bright with light to boost their physical prowess. Flicking Mercy into sword form, she used the weapon to swat away each blast that was sent their way, redirecting the energy to crash into the walls and cause further destruction onto the tower.

Three of the mages broke off from the group to charge her. She dodged one punch and swiftly cut the mage’s arm clean off. The woman screamed and clutched the deformed limb, stumbling onto her knees. Mercury brought the sword back around in a twisting motion as she spun on the balls of her feet, bringing the sword back down in time to cleave it into the next mage’s collar bone. She yanked her weapon free violently, cutting him deeper through the chest until his blood was spurting violently from his neck to betray that she had knicked his arteries.

The final mage managed to punch her in the jaw, hard. Mercury braced her back foot to keep from stumbling as she tasted a bit of blood trickle into her mouth. She swallowed it before any of it could reach her lips, and within a few seconds her body naturally healed itself of the minor injury. The mage continued to attack her, throwing fists and feet in a series of martial movements that Mercury wasn’t at all familiar with. Frankly, she didn’t need to be. Waiting for the opportune moment, she lifted her blade just in time to make the mage punch it, causing the woman’s entire arm to be split from knuckles to elbow.

As her enemy dropped to the floor screaming, Mercury leaned down and with a smug smirk told her, “You, my dear, get the honor of a slow, miserable death.” With the pommel of Mercy, she hit the woman’s windpipe hard enough to break it without fully crushing it, leaving the woman straining for breath and unable to scream.

Stepping over her, Mercy swapped back to pistol form where Mercury shot the first mage whose arm had been cut off and once more checked on Vandrad to see how he was faring.

    A Tempting Challenge RJtajUnz_o

Something was not right with Vandrad and what was worse is that he was aware of it but couldn’t seem to force himself to fix it. It was like his mind and body was betraying his very soul; acting based on the emotions that were being filtered directly into his brain from… well, it seemed the air. Unfortunately the Prince had the wonderful side effect to his magic in that he constantly absorbed ethernano from the air at an alarming rate. While normally this was greatly beneficial, it seemed to be doing a number onto his psyche from whatever influential power happened to be permeating around the tower. He was trying his hardest to fight it but his will power was fading.

The battle with the initiates seemed almost like a dream, his mind caught in a daze that was growing stronger with each passing moment. As the answer to their hunt came to him, he could merely repeat what he heard and show nothing for it. The thrill of the battle was gone from him because it had felt wrong to kill these innocent worshippers. A part of him even felt sad for having to take their lives, despite their standing between them and their target. What was their target again? The all powerful sun at the top, right? They were heading upwards to help bask in its glory, he thought…

Mercury spoke up, shaking him slightly from the trance. He turned his gaze to her as she smirked and teased him over his nonchalant attitude. She even offered to give him the reward he had supposedly earned from the last job they had gone on. He stared at her for a long moment as her words seeped through the controlling effects. He scoffed but it was half-assed and lacking any energy. "Shut up,” he said simply as his transformation melted from his form. He seemed to shake off the effects for the moment but it wouldn’t be long before they got back in and caused further damage. They had to keep going.

They ascended the tower quickly, running up the stairs as fast as they could. The entirety of the tower was most likely on alarm now so it was best that they keep moving up and up. But they hadn’t made it very far in their travel before they were confronted by another group of worshippers, these ones showing a lot more detail in their robes and a lot more confidence in confronting the intruders. As one of them yelled out to praise the sun, Vandrad’s vision darkened for a moment. Praise the sun. Praise the s- He managed to shake his head violently and bring back the entirety of his scope, in time to watch as Mercury caught the ball of sunlight that had apparently been thrown at them. She held it easily in her hand, as if the attack had originated from her in the first place. Wait, hadn’t she been able to manipulate metal? Could she use light magic too? Her insults towards the light plucked something deep within him he didn’t even know was there. He, too, felt offended as she brazenly mocked the light and played with it, like it was nothing more than a ball. And when she crushed it into nothing, a part of him felt hollow… and then violently angry.

Mercury. All she had done was be a major pain in his ass. And now here she was, once again finding a way to mistreat something he respected. She was abusing the divine sun like it was nothing more a toy. His hands curled tight into fists as several notions of clocking her rang loudly in his mind. But the movement of the mages caught his attention and shook him from the furious trance once more. The Silver Wolf wizard engaged three of them while the other two moved towards him. Growling, he stepped forward and ran into both of the worshippers, driving the three of them into – and through – the wall of the stairwell. They rolled into a hallway directly adjacent to them, the three sliding along the smooth floor. Vandrad stumbled to his feet along with the other two, voices in his head telling him to stop and not to hurt them.

They must have picked up on that as they started to move towards him. A low growl escaped his mouth and he thrust both his hands forward, unleashing duel blasts of energy through the unprepared wizards. They stared at him, wide-eyed before tumbling to the floor. Pain pierced his heart at the sight of them dying, throbbing agony that threatened to swallow up the entirety of his mind. He hissed and turned back to check on Mercury, who had just as easily dispatched the rest of the worshippers. Silently he climbed back onto the stairs and started to head upwards, not saying a single word to her.

The trip to the very top of the tower was all a blur. As they moved through the archway into a grand, open room, Vandrad looked more like a zombie than a person. Window panes made up the walls on every side of what could only be called a throne room and there, sitting at the top of a staircase, was the Archmage. Oh and he was utterly brilliant. His robes were magnificent, the crown on top of his head reflected and absorbed the sun from above and he, himself, seemed to shine with all the brightness a world could offer. Two guards stood at the bottom of the stairs and there, just beyond the throne, was another initiate. Jenna.

“Welcome my children… or should I say, my child,” the Archmage spoke, his voice booming in the hall. His gaze was fixed on Vandrad, his smile warm and welcoming. He rose slowly from his throne and took a few steps forward, stretching his hand out. “You’ve come a long way but you have made it. I am so very proud of you.”

"Proud…?” the Prince asked, staring up at the man through half-lidded eyes.

“You have made it here to worship, correct? You have come to praise the sun.” As if it was the keyword for funneling more influence, Vandrad wrenched to the side, his vision nearly leaving him completely. He fell to a single knee, hissing in a mixture of pain and resistance.

"Praise… the sun…” he mumbled, the words starting to take root in his mind.

“That’s right. And the one you came here with, she is a nonbeliever. She wishes to destroy the sun.”

"…no,” the Prince said, shaking his head, the very notion a deep insult to him.

“Yes… she must be… removed from the situation. Come, my child. Prove your loyalty. Eliminate the nonbeliever. Praise the sun.”

Vandrad didn’t respond this time. He slowly rose from his knee, his head hung over his chest. Then he started to turn around, taking a few steps forward, until he was facing directly across from Mercury. The bane of his existence. The nonbeliever who wanted to hurt his most precious sun. No, she had to be destroyed. She had to be eliminated. She was his enemy. She was…

    Smart ass.

    Vandrad’s head lifted slightly.

    Scientist.

His vision cleared slightly. Why? Why were her useless words coming to him now?

I smell a secret, I like to unravel it.

    Vandrad’s hands were trembling.

“Do it! Eliminate her! Praise the sun!”

The Prince’s head jerked violently to the side but he did not move. "I… am Prince Vandrad of Bellum…” he started to say slowly, anger and rebellion seething through his teeth. "I am Prince Vandrad… of Bellum,” he repeated it again, finding something deep inside to cling to. His hair instantly changed to its golden form, emerald orbs widening with fury. "I am Prince Vandrad of Bellum…”

“And I will not be controlled!”
His words roared out of him as he flung his arms to the side, magical power unleashing itself from his core. Energy danced across his body as his muscles expanded outwards, his body growing several inches and his hair forming sharper, more defined spikes in it. The ground beneath his feet shattered into thousands of pieces and rose up into the air around them slowly before they, all at once, shot towards the windows and destroyed them all at once. The two guards had stepped forward, their magic radiating about their limbs as they prepared to defend their archmage. In a flash, Vandrad was before them, grabbing them by their robes and flinging them backwards towards the stairwell both he and Mercury had come from.

"Kill the son of a bitch. I’ll handle these two,” the transformed Prince said to Mercury, turning to look at her. And just to show that he had regained his wits, he flashed a smirk at her. "That’s if you can handle him all by your lonesome,” An aura of golden energy wrapped around him as he launched himself through the doorway to the stairwell to take on the two remaining acolytes of this insane cult.

Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
    and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
By the time they got up the stairs, things were not working out well for Vandrad. Mercury was quickly starting to realize that she may have to do something truly drastic to try to snap him out of it so she didn’t wind up having to kill him on this job. It would be a shame to take the life of someone who was so delightfully easy to poke and prod, of someone whose secrets she’d yet to figure out. But her options were starting to look a bit slim given the sluggish, brain dead way he carried himself, which only got worse as soon as they entered what looked very similar to a throne room.

The gaudiest man she’d ever seen sat upon an oversized chair, high clothing brightly reflecting the light from the miniature sun in the ceiling up above them. Mercury could feel his power ebbing off of him and knew that she was going to have to play things very smart here, especially without Vandrad there to back her up. Or, as it more realistically seemed would happen, with Vandrad attacking her.

Rather than interrupt the brain washing pep talk, which she knew would be pointless, Mercury set herself to devising a plan. As far as she could theorize, there were two possible things contributing to the mind control: The Archmage’s magic, and the sun overhead. She figured that she probably would have to eliminate both to give Vandrad the best chance of getting out of this with some semblance of normalcy, provided the effects weren’t permanent. The sun itself would be rather easy to deal with, all things considered. The mage, on the other hand, might prove to be a bit more difficult.

By the time she figured out the plan that had the best statistical chances for her survival, and hopefully Vandrad’s, the Archmage had already convinced her partner to turn on her. “You know if you asked him nicely, he probably would have agreed to kill me without the mind control,” she informed the sun priest, her casual smirk still on her face. “He’s thought about it multiple times, I assure you. Playing to his weakness is just plain cruel.”

“You corrupt the natural order of light,” he informed her without compassion. “I sensed you from the moment you came within sight of the temple. You are nothing more than a blight that must be purged at all possible costs.”

“Ouch,” she said, feigning offense. Unfortunately, there was no time to come up with a witty retort as Vandrad had fully squared up against her and it looked as though the showdown was about to begin. She stood there several feet away from him, her stance appearing to be relaxed even though a fully aware Vandrad would know exactly how quickly that could change. Her finger rested easily on Mercy’s trigger as she waited with her self same smirk in place. A shame to have to kill someone so fun and easy on the eyes.

    Or would she?

Her gaze narrowed ever so slightly in interest as Vandrad just stood there, his head twitching a bit. He was fighting, she realized. He was fighting the mind control. A grin split her face in two as the Archmage continued to impress his demands onto her partner. “I do believe you made a grave miscalculation, sunshine,” she told the glittering man in a mocking tone. Vandrad had muttered something to himself, clearly attempting to break the spell on him. “You’re about to be in a world of trouble, and frankly I’m just looking forward to the show.”

She might have continued mocking the Archmage, but her ears caught something of interest when Vandrad spoke again. He was repeating something. What was it? His form changed as it seemed to do when he was tapping into his full power, his hair turning as bright a gold as everything else in the room, his eyes once more taking on their green sheen. And then the words roared from his mouth, unmistakable in their utterance.

    Prince Vandrad of Bellum.

This guy was a prince? She thought to herself as his power exploded out of him in a brilliant display of fury. Well, that explained a lot. Almost everything, actually. Maybe not the stuff about his dad, but the way he interacted with people and acted like he was cut from finer cloth than everyone else. Hell, even the fact that he wasn’t all that great on researching his own targets. He was probably used to relying on others to do that for him, the poor man. Granted this revelation sucked all the fun out of figuring out his identity for herself, but surely she’d find a way to work with it.

To her credit, and the credit of her training, she hardly showed any reaction at all to this knowledge. A slight narrowing of her eyes, perhaps, but nothing that he would notice while he was busy toppling the whole structure in his rage. The two mages that flanked the Archmage stepped forward to engage the now chaotic target, and in an almost sing song voice Mercury told them, “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”

But of course by then, it was too late. Vandrad had already rushed forward faster than they could react and snatched them by their robes, throwing them violently behind him. Mercury’s hair danced a little from the rush of air as the mages’ bodies were flung past either side of her toward the staircase. Her assumption was that Vandrad was going to let her play with them while he sought revenge on the head mage, which she wouldn’t fault him for, but he caught her by surprise when he turned to her and claimed them for himself.

Raising her free hand to her heart in a gesture of dramatic gratitude, she told him, “I get the big one? My, you are quite the generous one today. I’m touched!” He followed his statement up with a wry grin, stating that the gift was, of course, if she could handle the Archmage. It was good to see him back in his prime. Mercury shot him a deadly smirk that was chock full of malicious humor. “Oh, I’m sure I’ll figure something out. Welcome back, killer.”

He rushed past her to seek his prey, and Mercury turned her smirk toward the Archmage, who had thrown himself onto his feet from his throne in fury. His body was rippling with sunlight almost as bright as the star above, but she didn’t look away. “Now, then. Where were we. Ah, yes. You were calling me a number of ungentlemanly things. Something along the lines of a ‘blight’ and how I ‘corrupt the natural order of light’. Those were some very rude statements--”

Before she could finish her mocking, he launched a barrage of sunlight at her, practically drowning her in the stuff. The heat was white hot like she was standing on the surface of an actual sun, and it should have charged her to a crisp. Instead, it sank into her skin like a soothing salve, leaving her own body glowing as she basked in the sensation. And then, before the Archmage’s eyes, the light around her began to darken, the rays turning an unholy corrupted shade of violet until she was radiating with black light. She fixed her emerald gaze on him.

    “But they weren’t inaccurate statements.”

Reaching up a hand, she shot a blast of the inky black light up to the star above them, opening a channel of power that continuously ran from her palm. “NO!” the Archmage cried as the miniature sun began to turn black as night, casting a nightmarish shadow on the once blindingly bright room. She could already feel the man’s power draining without the star there to draw energy from. Lifting her pistol, Mercury casually walked toward him and fired round after round of basic ammo at him. The man blocked the first several shots with what little sunpower he still had left, but soon his power started to drain and shots started getting through his defenses.

What was worse was he knew he couldn’t attack Mercury with his magic. All it would do is rejuvenate and refuel her, worsening his plight. In a final bid for dominance, he threw himself toward Jenna, who had already broken from her own brain washing the moment the star had been corrupted, seeking to grab her and use her as a hostage or shield. It was a last ditch effort, however, and Mercury knew it. The flailing desperation of a dying man.

Still aiming her weapon like a gun, Mercy snapped to sword form and Mercury pulled the trigger. The entire blade launched itself from the handle, shattering past what was left of the Archmage’s barriers and piercing him clean through the chest. Jenna shrieked in shock and horror as the mage stumbled to the ground in dead weight, his final expression a look of anguish and fear. As Jenna stared at the body, which had begun to leak blood into a large pool on the floor, the blade ripped itself from the body and reattached to Mercy’s hilt.

Mercury relaxed and flashed the girl an easy grin as though they’d just finished something as casual as a fishing trip. “Ready to go home, Jenna?”
