    -Silver Wolf Guild Hall-

Leona was in her office taking care of some administrative matters. Chief among them was cleaning up her office so that it looked the part of a Guild Master's office. Some younger staff members were sweeping the floor and rearranging books on the shelves. Leona was sorting through the pile of magazines that she had started sorting through when Eoduun requested a face-to-face conversation that day. She had sorted them into two piles... the left pile was staying and the right pile was to be removed.

Leona had already weeded out some old magazines that were catalogs of hair care products. She did not have much use for those magazines. She suspected that they had belonged to Leila Vergious or Poko Monstar. Was it really her right to get rid of them? She did not know.

Leona decided to just stash them away in the library again. She could not bring herself to get rid of them just yet. She continued sifting through the pile until a courier came in with a letter for her. Leona received it, paid the courier, and opened the envelope. The letter was from Dr. Gary Barnsworth.

Leona read the translated letter and learned that it was an invitation to the embracing ritual of the cult she had clashed with. It was intended for the man whose hut she had searched for clues near Magnolia Town. It told her that the ritual would be held in Bosco in a particular alleyway, one that was next to a bar named The Golden Keg.

"I'm going to Bosco on a job." Leona informed the staff members in her office. They nodded and left while Leona got ready for the trip. She grabbed her Nightshade Machete and Argent Gloves and threw on her backpack. She also included the letter and the job notice. Since she had not flown there before, she would just have to take the long way to Bosco.

    -Bosco, eight hours later-

Leona stepped off the train to find herself in a strange place.

There were robotic ticket-takers and robotic guides to ask questions if one got lost. Travelers did not have to walk but only step onto softly glowing moving walkways and stand until they reached where they wanted to go. There were automated doors that people only had to approach for them to open. Leona was a long way from Desierto.

Leona ducked into a bathroom, put away her Nightshade Machete in her backpack and stepped onto a moving walkway. In a matter of seconds she was at the end of it and walking towards the exit. She had just stepped outside when a quartet of people wearing futuristic armor greeted her.

"I am Peacekeeper Captain Navarre. You are Leona Jarnefeldt of Desierto, yes? Guild Master of Silver Wolf and a former Rising Star?" A female in silver armor with blue pauldrons asked. She was roughly Leona's height.

    "Uh, yes. Why?" Leona answered.

"We understand that you have a weapon in your possession. That in itself is not a crime, but we are wary of mages from Fiore. Past interactions with them have been... unpleasant." A male in silver armor with green pauldrons informed her. He was taller than Leona and rather muscular. Leona decided not to press the issue.

"What is your purpose here?" The woman asked with authority.

"I'm here to investigate cult activity. I have a job notice that should tell you everything. Here it is." Leona said while handing the notice to the woman and keeping her hands visible. She read it with the aid of a high-tech visor and scanned it for evidence of forgery. She nodded and handed it back to Leona.

"So you are here to investigate a cult? In our city?" The woman asked.

"Yes. They have a plan for Fiore, and according to this letter, there's a meeting going on right in your city." Leona said before handing the woman the translated letter. Again the woman scanned it with her visor. She nodded and handed it over to Leona.

"We know exactly where The Golden Keg is. Since you have been honest with us, we will guide you there. There has been some suspicious activity in the alleyways, but we have been unable to obtain proof of it. Perhaps you can assist us." Captain Navarre said.

"Certainly, Peacekeeper Navarre." Leona stated her willingness to help. Peacekeeper Navarre and the other Peacekeepers escorted Leona through the city. She was glad that she had brought along the job notice and the letter. Bringing those documents saved the mage a lot of time and effort.

Leona had been escorted to The Golden Keg under the watchful eye of the Peacekeepers. They seemed concerned that she was here for some sinister purpose. They need not have worried about her having a hidden motive. She was focused on finding the cult and stopping its activity here. It was in everyone's interest if their recruitment drive in Bosco was stopped.

Leona could see why Bosco was used as a site of cult activity. It was large and easy to hide in. If one did not have a criminal record and did not draw attention to themselves, one could simply melt away into the populace without too much difficulty. A cult that thrived on secrecy could disappear into the back alleys without much trouble. The cult had proven to be fairly smart by establishing bases in out-of-the-way locations that made securing them rather easy.

The mage did not know if her activities against the cult were forcing them to fall back on already established bases, but she had a faint feeling that losing their temple in Spooky Forest had to hurt them. Instead being able to rely on the security provided by the reputation of Spooky Forest, the cult now had to resort to hiding in populated areas and hoping that local law enforcement did not find them. The silver lining to setting up a base in Bosco was that a larger population meant having more disaffected and marginalized individuals to recruit to make up for the losses sustained from losing the temple's residents.

"Here we are." Peacekeeper Navarre informed Leona. The quintet stopped in front of a bar with an animated sign of a golden keg being tapped. There were two alleys to choose from, one to the left and one to the right. Navarre walked into the right alley. It was dark and dingy with dumpsters overflowing with garbage. The walls were littered with spray-painted graffiti.

"There is something strange about this alley." Navarre commented. Leona joined her and began pressing against the brick walls. All of them did not move except for one. The section felt lighter and less sturdy like it was a recent addition, but it refused to budge despite her pushing with the strength of her Argent Gloves.

"I am detecting that some technology is in use. It is a stabilization field. As long as it is operational, that section of the wall will not come down no matter how much force is applied to it." The man with green pauldrons informed Navarre and Leona.

"Bring the stabilization field down, Peacekeeper Gibson." Navarre ordered. Gibson immediately tapped his left wrist and a translucent blue screen projected into the air flickered to life. The man began swiping icons and typing in commands with practiced ease. He was doing all of those activities with both hands at a speed that impressed Leona. She was also impressed by the technology itself... it was something that she did not know even existed.

"The field is down." Gibson stated. Navarre pushed on the section of wall and it immediately crumbled. Behind it was an old-fashioned metal door with bars. The woman then turned to Leona.

"The way is clear. We would like for you to keep at least one cultist alive for us to interrogate, but if you are forced to kill them, we will understand." Navarre informed Leona. The blonde pulled out her machete and kept it ready as she opened the newly revealed door. She closed it behind her and walked down the hallway. Chanting could be heard coming from deep in the sanctuary.

    -Inside the sanctuary-

Leona carefully walked down a long hallway lit by torches. It was of the same design as the temple in Spooky Forest, so she already had an idea of what to expect. The chanting gradually grew louder as the mage approached. She expected more resistance since she did not have a disguise for this job. However, she would not need one.

Leona had all of her equipment this time. She had her Nightshade Machete, Argent Gloves, and backpack. She was well-prepared for any cultist resistance. She edged closer to the door at the end of the hallway and quietly opened it.

Inside was a larger version of the ritual circle she had seen at the temple in Spooky Forest. There was a black stone sitting on a pedestal, but that was not what drew the blonde's attention. Positioned on the floor along the edge of the circle were seven items spaced at equal intervals.

Peering through the darkness, she recognized a few of the items. The first three were crushed lacrimas of some kind, silver flowers, and three human skulls. The remaining four items were progressively creepier. She recognized flesh sliced into patties, ground flesh that had been put through a meat grinder, a human heart, and a human brain. The blonde's stomach turned at the thought of how the cultists procured those last four items.

Leona's attention was drawn to a man standing in the center of the circle and leading the chanting she had been hearing. He would call out a chant and the ten cultists around him would repeat the chant in low voices that were in perfect harmony. It would have been mesmerizing if Leona was ignorant of their plans. One of the cultists raised his head and took notice of the blonde mage. He raised a finger.

"The intruder is here!" He warned his colleagues. The remaining nine cultists spun around to face Leona. The man in the middle soon emitted a blue form of himself that was absorbed into the black stone on the pedestal. His physical body was dispersed among the seven items that had been placed on the floor.

Leona took a deep breath. Like last time there was no cover to hide behind. Unlike last time, she had her Argent Gloves to protect against spells.

"We must avenge our fallen brothers and sisters!" Another one cried out. The others voiced their agreement and drew two daggers apiece.

"They call to us for vengeance! We shall deliver it!" A female voice affirmed. More voices of agreement filled the air.

"You will not desecrate this holy place, heretic!" An old man declared. The cultists then began to close in on her as a team. Leona prepared to fight. Leaving a cultist alive for interrogation by the Peacekeepers might not be possible. They were not afraid of her and seemed perfectly willing to trade their lives for a chance to kill the person who had been dealing their cult one setback after another.

The cultists simultaneously rushed Leona with a cry in their occult tongue. Leona immediately used a Wind Blast to thin their numbers, knocking down all but four of the robed enemies and breaking them up into a smaller and more manageable cluster. The first of the remaining four cultists rushed at Leona with daggers swinging. Leona dodged and slashed him across the back, then closed in and dealt two slashes across his chest and arms before stabbing him in the chest.

He dropped dead as the second, a redheaded female with a missing eye, charged in. Leona kicked her back and two more men attacked at once in a flurry of dagger swings. She withdrew the machete from the dead cultist and punched one of the men in the face before receiving a punch to her face. Leona stood her ground and cut him across the chest, focing

The other cultists had already gotten back up and were moving to surround her. Leona needed to call in some help before it was too late. The blonde focused and began to mentally recite the chant.

"O FABLED HARPIES, O SISTERS THREE! LEND YOUR STRENGTH UNTO ME!" Leona mentally recited the chant. Moments later the harpy sisters dropped in on a tornado and took to the air.

"Oh hey Leona. Looks like you're fighting those guys again, huh?" Sylvia asked her mistress, who was busy fending off cultists attacks. Leona ducked a kick and sidestepped a lunging stab, kicking the would-be assailant in the backside. They fell to the ground and Leona kicked them in the backside again for a quick retaliatory strike.

"A little help here!" Leona called out.

"Oh, right! On it!" Sylvia replied. The three harpies began to attack any cultist within reach, drawing off a few of them and leaving her to face four of them. She faced the one-eyed woman and three men. The woman made the first move.

Leona blocked the downward stab and kicked her back, then cut off a hand holding a dagger and stabbed her in the chest. The female cultist screamed as the stab connected and feebly waved her remaining dagger in defiance before collapsing onto the floor and ceasing movement. The three men rushed at her, but the blonde was ready. The mage kicked one of them aside and punched another one in the face, then grabbed and threw the last of the trio into another cultist who was running at her, making the man stab his unfortunate colleague in the chest.

The stabbed man slowly stood up and yelled a curse. He rushed at Leona again, who punched him in the face before stabbing him in the chest again. This time the stabbed cultist stayed down. Seven more left.

Leona saw the harpies quickly defeat three more of the cultists, who fell with numerous gashes across their faces, arms, and torsos. If she wanted to take one alive to give to the Peacekeepers, she had better act fast. The old man from earlier rushed at her. Now was her chance. Leona hit him with a Mach Straight to the face, then punched him three more times until he dropped his daggers and lost consciousness.

That left three more. All three of them charged at once but were attacked by the harpies and became too distracted to threaten Leona. She quickly moved in and attacked the cultists, who fell one by one in a flurry of machete slashes that made short work of them. It took four slashes apiece to kill them.

"Hey Leona, that stone in the middle's breaking!" Sylvia exclaimed. Leona ignored the exclamation and turned her attention to the unconscious cultist. She dropped her machete and picked him up. She had to deliver him to the Peacekeepers before something bad happened.

"Stay here! Keep a watch on things!" Leona ordered. She ran to the door with the unconscious cultist in her arms. Lowering him to the ground, Leona wrenched open the door and gestured to Navarre.

"Here's the cultist you wanted. He's unconscious, but check his mouth, robes, and body for suicide capsules. I've gotta go back inside! Something bad's happening!" Leona hurriedly said to the woman. Two of the Peacekeepers hustled and grabbed the man. Peacekeeper Gibson began checking his mouth for suicide capsules and found one, which he threw to the ground and crushed under his boot.

"Thank you. Now go!" Navarre ordered. Leona gave a thumbs-up and let the door slam shut. She hustled back to the main hall as her harpies called for her.

"There's a skeletal thing here!" Sylvia said to Leona. The skeleton in question turned to face the blonde. Leona screamed. It had a hideous mix of skeletal body and a half-formed human face.

"You are too late! I have been reborn!" The skeleton proclaimed in a raspy voice.

"I have transcended the boundaries of life and death. My power is greater than yours. With it I will put an end to you once and for all!" He proclaimed. Leona rushed to grab her machete before the fighting started. By the time she had grabbed it and returned to the fight the lich had summoned two skeletal warriors to aid him.

"Focus on the lich. I'll fight his skeletons!" Leona telepathically ordered. The harpies flew into action and began to attack the lich. The blonde rushed to attack the skeletons before they could get going. Leona dealt three machete slashes to one and broke it apart, then turned and punched the other in the face. She quickly stomped its skull until it shattered. Leona turned to face the lich when a sickly green sphere made contact with her right arm, causing it to feel like it was burning.

"Your efforts are in vain, mortal. I will defeat you with the power of death!" The lich taunted. Leona ran up to it and began attacking it with her machete. She landed five unanswered hits before the lich raised its hands and a black aura formed over Leona. Leona dropped to one knee as she felt momentarily drained. The lich laughed.

Leona rose to her feet and dealt three more unanswered machete hits before it summoned two more skeletal warriors. She landed an additional two hits before the skeletal wizard fired another sickly green orb at her, which she blocked with Ruby Dome. The lich took a step back and Leona leapt after it.

Landing a leaping strike on its left shoulder, she continued to rain attacks on its chest and body before she was interrupted by the two skeletons coming to the aid of their master. Four more strikes were dealt before she was forced to retreat. The lich grasped its bony chest.

"I may have underestimated you, mortal. But it matters little. I will claim victory!" It promised as it stood up straight and raised its arms, a crooked smile showing on its bony jaws. Leona was too busy fending off the swords of the skeleton warriors to retort. She had to keep pressure on the lich if she wanted to win. It was a formidable spellcaster with a range of powerful spells to use, but up close it was not much of a fighter. Since it used summons to cover its weakness, Leona decided to switch tactics.

"Focus on the skeletons! Leave the lich to me!" Leona telepathically ordered. The harpies went on the offensive as Leona took a moment to breathe. Her right arm was glowing green and burning. She needed to win before the lich's spells wore her down too much to be able to fight.

Ready to finish the fight, Leona raced past the skeletons and dodged a floating green sphere that was sent in her direction. The lich recoiled as Leona struck its right shoulder with a jumping attack and followed up with four more machete swings to the body. The lich raised its arms to attempt another draining spell, but Leona raced away just in time. She ended up helping her harpies finish off a skeleton warrior with a decapitating swing of her machete. She noticed that its essence was absorbed into the lich, which seemed to regain a little vitality with each defeated skeleton.

"You are a formidable opponent. It is a pity that you refused to join us. You would have been a most valuable servant to our cause." The lich said to Leona.

"You could have been one of us. You would have climbed the ranks with ease. In time you would have attained the secret to immortality. Imagine it... death would have no meaning to you. You could spend eternity advancing our cause." It tried to tempt her into ceasing her attack with the promise of immortality. Leona knew that it was on the ropes. It was trying to bargain with her in the hopes that she would stop.

"No thanks." Leona refused whatever offer it was trying to make. It looked at her, then raised its hands again. Its empty eye sockets emanated something that felt like anger.

"You would throw away the chance to attain eternal life? Then your life will end here! You will become nothing but food for worms! YOU WILL DIE ALONE AND FORGOTTEN!" It bellowed in anger. Leona ignored its ranting and her burning arm to take the offensive. Leona ducked under a green orb thrown her way and rolled under another that almost hit her head, then slashed the lich's bony leg. She followed up with a series of four more attacks before retreating.

"NO! I am not finished! I am not finished with you!" The lich bellowed. It called upon two more skeletal warriors that materialized in front of it. Leona knew that it was getting desperate. It was on the edge of defeat. The blonde needed to give it a not-so-gentle shove over the edge to end the fight.

Her harpies focused on the skeletons as Leona sent out a Gale Cannon that knocked back the lich. While it staggered Leona rushed straight at it and leaped into the air. She brought down her machete on its bony arm.

    That was five.

    Another hit. Four.

Another swing that hit its left shoulder. Three.

And another to the ribcage. Two.

The skeletons fell apart behind her and their essence entered the lich, who raised its arms and cast a draining spell. Leona raised the Ruby Dome just in time to block it. She then struck it on the right shoulder, bringing it to its knees. One.

"Your victory is only a temporary one, mortal! The cult still lives! I will be avenged! You can count on it!" The lich declared before Leona's machete severed its skull from the rest of its body. Leona then stomped on its skull until it broke to ensure that it would not revive. Her right arm started burning again.

The blonde heard laughter and clapping. A girl wearing a black and red school uniform with red eyes and long jet-black hair emerged from nowhere. Leona and her harpies turned to face the new arrival.

"That was quite the show you put on. You took a few hits and took a lot of risks, but you defeated the lich in a shorter time than expected. You did not fear death even when it looked you in the face. I am impressed." The girl complimented Leona. The blonde recognized her. She was among the seven high-ranked cultists from the temple!

"Your name is appropriate. You have been hunting us without pause and without mercy. You truly are a lion." The girl continued. She then changed the subject.

"If you want to continue your hunt, then you will want to travel to Silent Cemetery. That is where the high-ranking members of the cult live. Our research shows that you have been there at least twice before. You already know the way. All that remains is for you to walk the path." The girl informed Leona. The blonde raised an eyebrow.

"Why are you telling me this? Aren't you afraid that you'll be considered a traitor?" Leona addressed the elephant in the room. The girl simply laughed.

"We have a mutual interest in seeing the cult's plan stopped before it can reach fruition. That is all I can say for now." The girl replied cryptically. Leona kept quiet. More riddles... that was exactly what she needed right now. Leona turned away for a moment to listen to the sound of boots running towards her. It was Peacekeeper Navarre and fifteen of her colleagues.

The Peacekeepers called forth soft yellow light generated from floating eye-shaped drones to illuminate the circular room. They walked around and surveyed the scene, looking for clues to help their investigation. Peacekeeper Navarre approached Leona, who quickly put away her machete and dispelled the harpies.

"Well done, Miss Jarnefeldt. It seems that you have ended the cult's activities here in a most decisive manner." The woman complimented Leona, alluding to the dead cultists and the definitely dead lich lying on the floor.

"I stopped them here, but it's far from over. I've only dealt them another setback." Leona informed the captain.

"Excuse me, Captain! Over here!" A male called out. Captain Navarre and Leona walked over to a wall where a young man was standing. The Peacekeeper pointed to what looked to be a giant map.

"It is a map of all the lands of Earthland. Bosco is sitting right on a ley line. This is of great interest to us." Captain Navarre chimed in. Leona looked closer at the map. There were several "ley lines" running through Earthland. She had a faint idea that the cult's plan hinged on exploiting those ley lines in some way.

The captain raised an arm and pointed her wrist at the wall. A screen like the one Peacekeeper Gibson used earlier appeared in front of her. A few swiped icons and a bright flash of light later and the woman was holding a detailed paper map, which she handed to Leona.

"Take this map, Miss Jarnefeldt. You will have need of it. Take this back to your guild hall and study it well." The woman said to Leona.

"Thank you, Captain Navarre." Leona said appreciatively to the Peacekeeper. She carefully folded it up and put it in her backpack. She then grabbed her burning right arm.

"You must have been hurt. I will call for help." The woman said. She tapped an icon on her screen and a Peacekeeper with a green cross on his white pauldrons appeared.

"Medic Armitage, tend to our friend here." She ordered.

"Yes Captain." Medic Armitage answered. He raised his hands and they emitted a soft blue glow. He touched her arm and the blue light traveled across her body and destroyed a fist-sized blob of green energy that was infesting her right forearm. The pain ceased at once and Leona immediately felt better.

"Thank you both." Leona expressed gratitude to the captain and the medic. She noticed some strange symbols etched on the wall to the immediate right of the map. They were symbols of death. Captain Navarre brought up her visor and began translating.

"This cult worships every representation of death known to every religion, from major faiths with worldwide followings to esoteric sects with only a dozen adherents. Every god, every demigod, every demon of death. This cult worships them all." The captain informed Leona. Medic Armitage walked over to the base of the wall and found a large bag of Jewels. Their positioning suggested that they were given as an offering to Death.

"Captain, what do I do with these Jewels? Are they to be entered into evidence?" The youthful medic asked.

"Yes." The captain answered tersely. The medic nodded and walked off to carry out his orders. The woman repeated the process and took another picture of the etchings, which she then turned into a physical document for Leona.

"Take this translation of the etchings with you. We will conduct our own investigation into the cult activities in Bosco. We thank you for your help in this matter, Miss Jarnefeldt." The captain said to Leona.

"Of course, Captain Navarre." Leona responded as she folded the document and put it in her backpack.

"Should we discover anything else, we will contact your guild. I wish you well in your mission to stop the cult. I bid you farewell." The captain said to her before walking away to oversee the gathering of evidence. Leona took that as her cue to leave the Peacekeepers to their work. She walked out of the cult sanctuary and opened the metal door. Cold air slapped her in the face as she walked past a quartet of Peacekeepers who were guarding the entrance. Leona walked to the train station under the glowing lights of Bosco.

Now Leona had to get ready for a trip to Silent Cemetery. According to the girl, that was where the high-ranking cultists called home. It might be a trap, but if the cult was going to be stopped, Leona could not afford to let up now. She was going to keep pressure on them until their plan was finally stopped.
