An item known as an iLac was the sole reason Samira found herself heading into the Neutral Grounds. Such technological items were unknown to her and her experience with them quite limited. It would be in her advantage to own one for herself and learn how to use it properly and so with that in mind she took the opportunity that had been given to her by fate. The company that made the iLacs were giving them out for free. Why they would do such a thing was uncertain. Once everyone had a free one there was no incentive for people to buy them unless they were fools that just had to have the latest upgrade. The basic one would suffice for her purposes.
“The Neutral Grounds. I have heard of them. We will not be able to aid you once you cross the border.”
Samira heard the voice of Chaac within her mind as she walked. It was common for a spirit or two to comment on her day to day activities, although people would often look at her strangely when she responded back vocally. She could do it silently with her mind, but speaking was more natural. “What do you mean?”
“Something about magic not working there. They’re mage haters.”
“They are not mage haters, Agni. They just prefer living life without magic. Do not speak unless you have something intelligent to say.”
“What was that, Rainman?”
“Qui…et.”
“Yes, please do control yourselves.”
And so her spirits were at it again. A full blown conversation with all of them made her head spin and the noise was much like being in a cafeteria. She was not sure if she would be able to handle it whenever she awakened more of the keys within the chest that belonged to her grandfather. The conflicts between Chaac and Agni were especially painful to listen to. It was something to be expected she supposed, with one representing water and the other fire.
Soon the voices became a whisper as she approached the Neutral Grounds. They wished for her to be careful and soon there was nothing but her own clear mind. Well a clear mind that lasted for a short while. The Neutral Grounds was a large city, a busy metropolis. People occasionally bumped into her as she slowly traveled the streets of the city but she made no reaction nor said nothing to the offenders. In such a place she was defenseless and to cause unnecessary trouble would be ill advised.
Following signs and asking random people for directions along the way, Samira found herself standing in front of the building of the company that was distributing the iLacs. A simple stand was set up near its entrance and it was to that stand she went. A group of people were already in line and one at a time they each walked away happy with their free iLac. Her turn came up and without much interaction between the employee and herself she had within her hands her own iLac. It was small and far from impressive in appearance but as the saying go appearances were often deceiving. She knew it would be an important tool to have. With the task done, Samira left the Neutral Grounds and headed back to Lamia Scale.
