Been a very long time since I’ve bitched obnoxiously made suggestions about flaws I see in the system however I figured I’d do some now. I put them all in spoilers so if you don’t wanna read all of them you don’t have to.
- HP and damage:
- Why is HP a thing? I don’t mean health as a whole but as a numerical value, especially when we are a heavily non-PvP site that heavily relies on writing story over PvP combat. Whenever nearly anyone does any sort of combat on this site it’s typically story related, and even if competitive, probably does not use the numerical values to maintain the sense of story and flow necessary for an rp thread to flourish, rather than forcing issues that make no sense. It would be easier and simpler to give damage a descriptive value rather than a number. Deep cuts, burn degrees, bruising damage are all what we’re expected to put in our magic, why are they not what we use when dealing with PvP? It maintains consistency and a level of freedom that ‘this does 20 damage’ does not provide. Heck when we get into grazing and shockwave damage that numerical damage does absolutely nothing, because an attack that may have supposed to do ‘100’ damage and finished off the opponent has only grazed the cheek. It hit him though so now we have to decide how much of that 100 damage is translated, again, a descriptive value and injury does better than a numerical one.
To those that would argue that people would abuse that and try and take limitless amounts of damage. 90% of players know how human damage and limitations work. Maybe not at an anatomical level but they know that the human body can only take so much abuse, and only so many bones can be broken, only so much blood can be lost. Even then, we have mods who should be capable of stepping in for that 10% that doesn’t get it. And we don’t promote pvp anyway so it’s not like we expect it to be used too much anyways so that 100% of fights is at most maybe 20 a year with that 10% of fights between morons being 2.
I’m also apologizing to those currently agreeing with me because if I’m being strictly honest, I actually promoted for and suggested a system like this previously here, so I can’t sit here and say it wasn’t my idea and everyone here is a dummy. I’m within the group of dummies who thought this was a good idea. Ultimately though, as I got older and did more stuff with stats I started to realize that numbers in a writing rp should be at best a relative thing, so I’m backtracking on this issue. I understand why it was originally made(I think), however I believe with how the site tries to promote itself it fails as a whole.
For reference as to what I originally suggested, https://www.fairytail-rp.com/t9699-stats-can-suck-it-damage-is-wear-its-at this was the old link. Yeah, I was a bit of an asshole then. I’ve changed so much since the 3 or 4 years since then.
- Takeovers:
- The next issue is take over magic, which is functionally different than normal magic, as it requires a transformation of the body to do anything. However duration rules and how their set up as acting as normal magic make this magic disadvantaged due to limitation on how it is used, especially early as you don’t have any rational limit on a transformation until B-rank. It would seem better to imply that transformations act as large investments, using up large amounts of MP to use and can stay indefinitely unless forced out of the transformation due to a significant injury occurring. Spells used within those transformations can act as normal however the transformations themselves should be capable of lasting as if they don’t, a takeover user is essentially a sitting duck unable to defend themselves.
Say for a d-rank it takes 30% for a partial and 50% for a full. Then drop it 5% for each rank up for a chart that looks like this:
Partial/Full:
-D-rank: 25%/40%
C-rank: 20%/35%
B-rank: 15%/30%
A-rank: 10%/25%
S-rank: 5%/20%
SS-rank: 1%/10%
- Immunities:
- Do I need to explain how bad immunities are? We aren’t talking about resistances; everyone has the ability to resist some things. We’re talking about zero effect. Immunity is in itself a form of godmodding, an ability to tell another player ‘you cannot win’. Especially with how it works. I’ve said this before but the idea of a d-rank beating an s-rank is not possible. However the idea of a D-rank beating a C-rank is perfectly possible. When a single rank can make you immune to a smoke screen or similar support-like attack, we have a severe issue because one, it makes no logical sense, and two, it damages writing value for those who want to use that style of play.
- Limitations:
- Perhaps in contrary to what I just said with immunity. Rules are enforced with a dead cold iron fist by some. Originally this was for newer rpers, since they don’t understand the most basic rules of rp and may just be learning to write and plot and story. However it also stretches to more seasoned rpers and it can become frustrating, especially when we know exactly how to balance our own magics to avoid OP behavior(and mods quickly figure out who knows how to and actively tries to abuse loopholes). Those capable of balancing a magic without strictly adhering to certain rules (such an example is sacrificing passive abilities to increase the power of a single ability) or creating a perfectly balanced rules system exclusively designed around their magic even if directly rejecting site rules in some way shape or form (I did this with success and approval before giving a metal make magic spells durability rather than duration :3). It’s hard for me to really understand the scope of how deep these issues go because I’ve been fortunate enough to not have any issues with it however I’ve had enough people complain about throat gripping magic grades to think it deserves at least a look.
- MP:
- At the end because the magic power system here functions I just hate giving MP a numerical value because fights should never last an eternity regardless of whether they’re there. If a fight is lasting extremely long it’s typically due to poor rping or is more than an rp fight. 99% percent of the time it’s the former though. So yeah. Just feels irrelevant. Felt like whining and griping about it.
