    Preparation Empty Preparation

Okay, so I suddenly got two-wait, no, three- ideas for stuff to use in magic which I'm not sure whether they would be supported or accepted.

All three the types of magic are focused on preparation.

    1. Totems.
    2. Scrolls.
    3. Potions.

    1. The user crafts totems which when infused with magic produce a certain effect, almost always an area of effect buff or debuff.

    2. The user inscribes spells into scrolls, basically casting a spell onto a scroll, after which they can basically just hold onto the scroll forever and instantly and freely cast the spell from the scroll when they actually need it.

    3. Magical Alchemy. Similar to scrolls, except potions are the medium. More importantly, these potions would require ingredients and more time to prepare, so as compensation the effects would be stronger than spells of an equal rank. However the choice of magic effects which can be put inside potions is limited. After all, it would be rather weird if splashing some liquid on the ground would create a portal which leads to behind your enemy.

    Advantages of each type:

    1. Very powerful supportive magic, since when you and your allies and fighting you can just drop your totems and your allies will be stronger for as long as you keep supplying the magic for the totems to function.

    2. Scrolls basically just allow you to cast spells in advance so when you actually need them you can use them immediately. You also pay the mana cost in advance, so if you also have some normal spells you would be able to use some more spells in sequence.

    3. Highly similar to advantage of scrolls, except the effects also become stronger because you definitely can't make these in the middle of combat, they take time to make, and you can only have a limited amount if them due to limited ingredients and inventory space (my backpack is not a Bag of Holding). Oh, both scrolls and potions could also be used by others.

Now, the problem is that these things don't really act like Holder magic. Holder magic is more that you just cast spells through an item, and that item or set of items is special. Totems come close, although I'm pretty sure they're still not exactly the same. Scrolls and potions are just really different, since they completely change the way you are applying your magic and/or your spells. Holder magic also doesn't allow you to share your magic/spells with others. Your item or set of items only allows you to cast spells specifically related to that/those item/items.

So...would these ideas actually work or is it a bit too much outside the box?

I'm actually going to be making an alchemist with my 2nd alt account and have plans on how to do it. I've seen examples of magic similar to scrolls, where the character had magical circles they prepared before each job. He didn't have cooldowns, but had a limited number of circles he could use per thread, and had them on various different objects (mostly cards). It was interesting to see him use them as traps or attach them to ally's equipment.
