    History/Story

    History:

Born in the Capital city of Crocus, Sukai was born to a loving family consisting of a mother and a father, both of which are mages. Her father was a "Storm Mage" as he called it, commanding the wind and lightning, hiring himself out to ships for safe passage on their trade routes, which ment he had to travel far, and be gone for long periods at a time. Her mother, on the other hand, was a fire mage, and was in the service of one of the noble families of Crocus, as both a teacher to the children and a body guard to the family, one of many.

Her mother was one of the few allowed to live inside the vast home of the noble family, and so Sukai had many rules to follow, more so than a child normally would have. Like most children, she had to behave, but not just certain times, almost all the time. She was not allowed to play with the noble children, and had chores to do within the household, for which her mother was compensated. The maids took care of her most of the time, while her mother was busy guarding the noble family, or teaching their children, but would spend as much time with Sukai as she could when her rotation was over.

Her father would come home after months of being at sea, and would take her away from the nobles home for several weeks at a time, in which she had the most freedom she ever had in her youth. Her mother would get time off and spend it with the both of them, going out to the town, seeing all that the city had to see. They would rent a room at one of the local hotels, and spend a week or more there, and would eat out every night, spending the money that her father had made on his trip. Her favorite part was the stories that they would tell, of their adventures when they were younger, whether it was both of them together, or their own stories. Her father always had a new story to tell when he returned from his trips, and usually had something for her, a treasure she would call it.

This didn't last, unfortunately, and her father was only there for a month, and would live in the nobles vast mansion with them, doing chores with his daughter, often making it more fun with his magic when the maids were not looking. He would leave, however, when he found another job or got called back for another trip out at sea. She would miss him terribly, but at the age of 10, she knew it was a sad fact of her life. She would long for adventures like those her parents used to tell her about, but she had not even begun studying magic. It seemed hopeless, like she would be doomed to become a house maid for the nobles, the most interesting thing to tell others was what she would find in the clothes she was washing of the family she served.

This changed, however, on her thirteenth birthday, when her mother bought her a tome of magic, one that was unique and not common, something that she hadnt seen since her youth many years before. Sukai was overwhelmed with joy impatience, she found a place outside of the mansion and began studying right away. From that day, she would spend her days cleaning and washing, and at night when she should be sleeping, she studied her magic, and practiced. It was a slow process, learning her magic, and the nobles children made fun of her, for her magic could not hurt anyone, but she didnt care about that, even if their words did hurt.  She was eventually able to use it to sneak out of the mansion undetected. This was a turning point in her magic career.

She would sneak out often, and continue to practice her magic on random people, smiling at their reactions, and giggling at their confusion. She would find it more fun to hide and do these things. It brought less attention to herself, but allowed her to still have her fun. She would skip some nights, due to exhaustion, and soon her mother caught onto what she was doing. She was not angry, but urged her to be more careful with her night time adventures.

The noble children, about the same age as her, would seem to go out of their way to make her life more difficult, especially now that they all had magic to use, even if it was basic. At the age of 15, she had a particularly nasty encounter with them. She was easily noticeable these days, as she dressed herself in almost all white, except for the blue sash. Both of which her father brought for her on his travels, and despite the kimono being too large for her, she wore it proudly anyway.

She was on her way to deliver the mail to the Head of the Noble Family, and when she reached the end of the hall and went to turn, the eldest son was there, crouched in waiting. He lept up, and let loose a gush of flames in her direction. She screamed as she stumbled back to avoid the flames, tripping over her kimono, and knocking over a priceless antic vase. She had not been burned, but the vase landed on her head, knocking her unconscious. When she awoke, her head was wrapped, and her kimono taken to be washed. She was in her bed, her mother beside her along with a nurse from the local clinic.

Her mother was glad she was ok, but upset all the same. The eldest son had told his family that she had broken it on purpose, and threatened him, so he scared her, and she hit her head as she fell. Her mother knew it wasn't true, but there wasnt anything she could do. It was all she could do to not have them both thrown out, but she had to take a pay cut, and Sukai had double the chores after that.

She hated the nobles after that, and bite back every venomous word at every turn for her mothers sake. She devised a plan one night, and snuck out with one of the small wash buckets. She snuck out into the city, searching through the flowers for bugs, in particular caterpillars. She knew that the nobles had almost never seen bugs other than the butterflies and maybe moths that fluttered in the sky, and thought that a big bug would make decent payback. She scooped it up in the bucket carefully, not noticing the quills it had.

Sneaking back into the mansion, she carefully made her way into the childrens room, and makes her way slowly to the eldest sons bed. She lightly dumped the caterpillar onto his face, and snuck out quietly, imagining the screams that would wake everyone soon enough. Unfortunately, she did not realize that the caterpillar she had was poisonous. Instead of the hilarious morning she expected, the whole house was in an uproar over the eldest sons ailing condition. Instead of feeling superior and that justice was served, she felt scared.

They were speaking and acting as if he would die. She didnt realize how terrible it was, and after several days of waiting, hoping against hope he would get better, he was failing fast. She went to the family, and confessed what she had done, and apologized many times, but it did not matter. They began calling her an assassin, and murderer, and threatening to have her executed for what she had done.

She was locked up in the families cellar, and tormented by them, day and night. She didnt know how long it was, but her father appeared seemingly out of no where, and broke her out. He explained that her mother was distracting the family, and that she needed to leave. She and her father spoke only for a minute, before he sent her off, promising that they would all be ok. He told her "Think of this as the begining of your adventure, and a new chapter for your mother and me." As a parting gift, he gave her hand carved sandals he had gotten for her overseas. It was nothing like what she had always imagined, and wished it had a happier start, but she had no where to turn back to now. She steeled herself, and did her best to escape.

She spent much of the next few months stealing to eat, and hiding from every living person she ran into. She only ever spoke with the animals, an odd trait she had that she never knew till they were all that would talk to her, or that she would let speak to her. She didnt know where to turn, so she simply traveled, practiced her magic, and lived. She didnt wander into cities or towns, for fear of being recognized. She had seen a wanted poster once of her, and did her best to hide when she could. Her 16th birthday was the loneliest she had ever had, but at least she was alive, and her first chapter was about to begin...

Waking with a start, Sukai blinked and looked around, trying to see through the blurriness that comes with waking up. She looked down first, then up and around, and spotted the source of the noise that had awoken her. A woodpecker was striking the tree, searching for food. It seemed to not notice her, or not be afraid of her, which was fine for it, and probably good for her. It was daylight already, and she needed to be on the move.

She untied the sash from the tree that held her up in it, after stretching her back. Sleeping in trees was not as comfortable as some animals made it seem. She slowly climbed down, but waited on the last few branches, looking around the area for any movement. Seeing none, she crawled down, and tied up her sash and Kimono, hoisting it up so she didnt trip over the edges of it, and began walking. She didnt know where she was going, but she couldnt stay in one place too long. Her stomach growled and pained her, and coupled with her aching back, it was not a great start to the day.

In the distance, she saw a dirt road, and stopped, wary. She cast a spell, rendering herself invisible, and slowly stepped out to see if there was anyone around. In the distance, she caught the sight of a wagon slowly rolling down her way. It was being pulled by a burly bull, and had a heavyset cheerful man on top driving it, singing as he went along. He had a companion walking next to the bull, one hand on the beasts horn, keeping him going where he needs to. She decided to wait and see what they had before she would take off.

She hide nearby, and overheard part of their conversation between the song. The heavy set one was telling his skinny companion "We're almost there, Magnolia is beautiful this time of year!" The skinny man nodded happily, "And then we can sell our fruit, and spend some of the coin there!" They both laughed as they walked by, but Sukai was not done with them. She heard the word fruit, and felt as if she was starving.

Quietly, she kept pace with them, and looked in the back of the wagon. They had many different kinds of fruit, all in crates, open to the sky. She was very lucky, it seemed, and after a quick look back up, grabbed a few pieces of fruit, and then ran off in the other direction. The heavyset man looked back, but only saw the ghostly teal flame as her spell flickered a bit. He scratched his head, and kept on his way, tossing it up to him seeing things.

Off in her small hiding place, she feasted on her spoils. She hated having to steal to get by, but she didnt have a choice, and right now, the fruit tasted delicious, and now, she could be on her way again, careful aw always.
