I heard you on the wireless
    back in 52...

Within the great country of Midi, there were little villages peppered all throughout. Although great metropolises existed, a great number of people hailed from small hamlets in which they were born, lived and died without ever so much as visiting beyond three towns away. In a village called Tsukishima, the same was true for the majority of the inhabitants, with the exception of one odd family. Many, many years ago, the Kageyama clan had shattered into branches which spread all over Ishgar. Others remained but would always welcome newcomers back home and teach them of the family's sacred art. Otherwise, the Kageyama clan served as a family of some renown. They served as healers for travelers far and wide, curing the most mystical curses to regular diseases with similar levels of skill and knowledge. Not all remedies required magical interference, as many well knew, and thus most of them were trained in the medical arts as well as mystical healing.

Here was where Tsubasa Kageyama had spent the better part of the last few months. Training in his family's ways both in medicine and learning to unlock his genetic gift, The Pure Eye. It was only under the careful tutelage of his elders that he was allowed to use it at first, as any reckless usage could cause the bearer to age themselves to death. As always, there was more to the story than that. Including the part where the horrifying curse had come unleashed and Tsubasa had to contain it within his body, causing a blackened scar throughout his back which gave him an outrageous but terrifying magical power that would erupt painfully if he didn't utilize its power regularly.

    Tales for another day.

Once his training had been deemed complete, or as much as it was going to be while remaining within Tsukishima, Tsubasa had traveled from his ancestral hometown to the small mountain town of Minari in order to practice on his own. It was here that he spent time training by himself, helping the townsfolk and just generally keeping his chill.

    Until the floating castle came.

To be precise, one cloudy morning found Tsubasa sitting in a meditative position as the sun rose to its prominence. He had created a little ritual of waking up as the day began, making breakfast for himself and the others, then heading out for a little meditation just before the children of the town started heading to school. Some mornings Ishmael would join him, but due to the fact that "mornings are bullshit", Ahab never would. Today, however, it was just him. Him and the morning. On a large hill overlooking the town itself, he could see the movement of the people, having memorized their names and routes, the routine gave him a sense of calm as he centered himself.

The clouds this morning portended rain later in the day, further foretold by the soft scent of petrichor just on the tip of the nostrils as the far clouds dispersed what the near clouds soon would. The temperature would remain fine all day, but the elderly would likely need help taking their laundry in before the showers started. Nothing would put a damper on a day like mildew-laden clothing.

His thoughts were interrupted by a newly familiar presence within him. A creeping syndrome stretching like spindly spider legs in the recesses of his mind. "Why aren't you afraid of me?" Said a voice, a rumbling like an avalanche from his back, through vibrations into his heart. Tsubasa was wrong, of course. It was him, the morning, and it.

"Because you aren't worthy of fear," He responded with an exhalation. No one was around, so he could speak aloud, although normal conversations with this creature happened internally. While his scar was closed, no one else could hear it anyway, and he didn't want to sound more crazy than usual.

"I can take over at any moment," It warned. This came with a trepidatious vibration within the shoulder blade on his left side.

Tsubasa remained quiet, breathing deeply. The movement ceased after a few moments. "But I can always take over your taking over. And don't try to take over my taking over with your own taking over or else, boy-o I will take over that take over like you don't even know."

"Child." The voice rumbled, sending a spasm through Tsubasa's back. This seemed to be nothing more than an empty thump of a currently powerless creature against its container. It stopped just as quickly as it had started as the curse-bound resumed its rest.

"Our talks are fun." Tsubasa had come to call it Kuzu, which in the Midi language translated to garbage or trash. He never wanted to give it more attention than it demanded, and insisted that it deserved no more than the minimum. And yet he knew that holding it back for too long would create pustules of pure mana on his body that would, quite literally, explode into darkness and threaten to let the creature permanently free. Therefore, he would choose opportune times to let it free now, weighing the pain of his own suppression with the need to let it, for lack of a better term, breathe.

It was an uneasy relationship to say the least.

"Mister Tsubasa!" Came a voice from before him. Snapping himself from his daze, he searched for the voice and saw a young boy roughly half his age attempting to climb up the hill to follow him. It was far too steep for him to get up by himself, and as Tsubasa stood up to hop down and give him a hand, he noticed that the boy was pointing at something.

Pointing at a lot of somethings. From above the clouds descended a castle roughly twice the size of the town itself, a flying base of some kind. And as it took to a resting place above the town, it unleashed what appeared to be a flood of squids. Tsubasa didn't stop to stare, he threw a small disc in front of him as he jumped down the hill, landing on the flying hover-device as it expanded, swerving slightly to grab the child that had come to get him. How long had Kuzu kept him in a stupor for him to ignore this? None of it seemed to carry any kind of magical sensory for him to pick up which meant it was probably mechanical or… just weird.

He swung the kid around his back and held him for long enough for the kid to grab piggy-back onto him. Flipping open a small communicator on his wrist, he sent out a signal to Ish and Ahab to protect the townspeople. The Mach 16 took him higher and higher to the point where he was about to come into contact with the first of the squid-creatures.

"This is your stop, kid. Find any classmates you can, tell them I told you all to hide, okay?" Not waiting for a response, (though he would indeed find one, Tsu had become a fan favorite of the local chililn's) Tsubasa reached around behind him, placing the kid steady on the hoverboard. The gyroscopic stabilizers would keep him from falling now. Which was good because Tsu used it to springboard up towards the Squidling that was flying right towards them.

"Knock knock. HAMMERSPACE!" Tsubasa shouted, bringing from behind him the rapidly expanding rocket-powered sledgehammer that smashed down against the first Squidling, sending it hurtling to the ground as a mixture of metal and goo. "I'll take weird hybrid-metal robots for five hundred!" With no steady way to move upward, he activated the hydraulics on his hammer and boosted himself up, but found his progress halted by a Squidling heading down for the boy he'd just let go.

"Bad squirmy! What's the rush?" He smacked the back of his own hand and seemingly his hand 'coughed up' a giant futuristic six shooter which Tsubasa proceeded to fire at that Squidling and then five others that were within his considerable range. It made quick, incendiary work of them, showing that they definitely weren't made of much. Of the first, initial wave, that was roughly half. However as he finished all six shots, he'd made a full 180 rotation and saw the second wave. Now the clouds weren't what were blotting the sky.

"Oh I'm gonna need more guns."

    Mercury Banner
Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
    and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
It had been a number of months since Tsubasa had informed Mercury of his desire to move on to the next level of his training, a level that did not involve her. She was sad to see the young man go, but despite everything that had happened she knew that it was not a choice he made out of resentment toward her. They had simply reached a place where she had taught him all she could, and he was ready for something different, something more. So the Silver Wolf ace had honored his request and left him to his devices, letting him know that he was always welcome to return to Silver Wolf whenever he wanted, that it would always be a home for him.

But, that didn’t mean that she didn’t find ways to keep tabs on him from time to time. The Kageyama clan wasn’t all too difficult for her to research, and tracing them back to their lands in Midi was a fairly simple process for one such as herself. While she never took the time to visit personally, or even to send any drones or such to spy on the place, she knew of the village Tsukishima and performed regular searches online about it just to make sure there was no major news in the area that might be a cause for concern. Granted, it was a fairly rural village, as most villages in Midi were, so it wasn’t like there were any daily media updates on the place. But even keeping tabs on some of the larger surrounding towns was enough to sate her curiosity and assure her that nothing extraordinary had happened to the young man.

Given the things that had happened to her recently, she had become a bit more wary, of course. The last few weeks alone had been insane, to put it mildly. Mercury and Vandrad both had a great number of enemies, all of whom had been insufferably active as of late. The multifaceted attack on the former prince’s family and allies had left the survivors reeling, though thankfully the vast majority of Vandrad’s family and close friends had been able to make it out relatively unscathed. The only one who had died, supposedly, was Mercury herself. They knew she was alive and well of course, but Mercury had taken great pains to make sure their enemies believed her dead – especially Maker.

But that didn’t mean she wasn’t constantly worried about the people important to her, now. If the Dread Masters had spent any time at all investigating Mercury during their campaign to secure Vandrad and his power, then they would certainly know some of the people that Mercury kept herself close to, including Tsubasa. She hoped that with her supposedly being dead that they would have no reason to seek him out, nor anyone else from Silver Wolf, but at this point paranoia had gotten the best of her. Better safe than sorry. So it was that Mercury had made a few adjustments to her satellite – a device that she had installed around Earthland’s atmosphere a number of years ago when she’d first arrived on the planet – making sure that it kept a special eye around the area where she knew Tsu was. If anything out of the ordinary happened, it would alert her.

And today, that alert arrived. Mercury stopped dead in her tracks as she walked through the du Wolff manor on their hidden island, a wave of panic paling her face. The large crow on her shoulder voiced his protest with a loud caw, craning his head to fix a beady black eye on her. Frantically, the Xocili tapped into her satellite and pulled up the live feed, using its large camera to zoom in on the area to find some large structure hovering in the air above the Midian village. She frowned as she honed the lens in further to get a better look. It was hard to see what it was from above, but it looked like some kind of… castle? And there were things starting to stream out of it. Whatever this was, it didn’t feel like Maker’s M.O. nor that of any of the Dread Masters’ but still, the whole thing screamed of an invasion of some kind.

Mercury conjured one of her devices and pressed a button on it, causing one of her newer tactical suits to materialize around her, covering her from head to toe. Then, she withdrew her translocator and dialed in the coordinates to the general area. “Let’s go, Bandit.” With a single blast from the translocator, a portal opened before her and she quickly rushed through, Bandit taking flight and following her in, both of them jumping out the other side where Mercury would begin her freefall descent toward the ground from above the castle. This thing was absolutely massive, its very existence bewildering the woman. And were those… squids flying out of it? “Oh good, I flew straight into a sci-fi porno,” she teased to herself dryly.

A commotion caught her attention, her radars informing her that there were signs of battle coming from the other side of the floating structure. Using her magic, she materialized thick metal plates on the bottom of her boots that would act as thrusters, allowing herself some semblance of flight as she raced around the corner to see what would await her. What she found almost caused her to stop again: It was Tsubasa. He looked a bit different after their time spent apart, but she was sure it was him. He was currently fighting back as many of the squid things as he could, clearly trying to protect a younger boy that was being carried to safety on a device that was not unlike the hoverdisc Mercury had taught Tsubasa how to make.

Unfortunately, she wasn’t going to be able to identify herself to him just yet. For one, she needed to be one hundred percent certain that whatever this was had nothing to do with Maker or the Dread Masters. But also, her radars were beeping frantically at the approach of another wave of the creatures, this one much larger than the one Tsubasa appeared to have just fought back. With the flick of her wrist, Mercury summoned her bow, the white and black high tech device appearing in her hand and instantly powering to life. Taking a calm and collected stance, she drew from the lacrima core within the device, pulling back the bowstring as a metal arrow coated with electricity materialized in place.

Aiming her shot precisely, her internal sensors factoring for the wind, distance, and angle, Mercury loosed the shot. The arrow streaked through the sky for several meters before it exploded into multiple pieces. Dozens of charged arrows scattered in the air, changing directions seemingly at will as they sought out a target, embedding into their hybrid metal bodies and overloading them with electricity. A large number of the squids seized violently, smoke emanating from their bodies as they were burned to a crisp before dropping to the ground.

Knowing the only way they would be able to beat this back was with communication, she flew over to where Tsu was hovering on his oversized hammer and stopped near him, making sure not to invade his space too closely seeing as how he wouldn’t know who she was just yet. “What can I do to help?” she asked him, her voice filtered through a synthesizer in her skull shaped mask to make it unrecognizable. Surely he would be wary of a stranger coming out of nowhere in the middle of all this, but the fact was that she didn’t really have the time to assure him she wasn’t an enemy.

    Nerdcore could rise up
    It could get elevated

His little remark behind him, Tsubasa switched tactics between the technological heading straight into the mystical, the tattoo on his arm glowing with a sinister energy for a moment, before the swirling darkness was overcome by a calming white glow, almost a perfect inversion of colors. With one hand on his hammer, the other formed into a demonic claw which reached out, the ethereal energy extending far beyond his actual hand, gripping one of the remaining creatures of the opening incursion and crushing it with a clench of his fist.

Before he had time to turn to the second wave, a burst of arrows came from out of his field of vision. It took the blink of an eye for The Pure Eye to activate, preparing to shield him with a protective barrier. It was only as the magic began to well within him that he realized that he was not the target; rather, a swath of the metal calamari had been blown to bits. "Another foe!" Kuzu hissed into his ear, "Attack that one as well!"

    Perfect.

Not one to waste a gift from the skies, Tsubasa switched his attention to the actively falling pieces of squid. He extended his hand, forming the shape of a tiger claw. As he did, the ethereal massive claw attached to him did the same thing, magnified. He took control of the dismembered pieces, crushing them to ash before tossing them against the wind in the shape of his family's seal. The crest spread out immediately, converging together and creating a smokescreen between the fast approaching tentacled menaces and himself. It would last only a few moments but it was enough for him to get his shit together.

With a snap of his fingers, metallic boots appeared on his sandal-clad feet which took over in helping him float in mid-air. The hammer dissipated and a pair of silver glasses formed across his eyes just as his generational eye sealed again. It could only be used in bursts, as it would actively increase his cellular breakdown when used, effectively shortening his lifespan for every second he used it.

Just as he swapped into a more battle-ready form, appearing now as some kind of cybernetic demon-armed samurai, he was joined by a midnight-clad warrior carrying a bow that looked to be inspired by moonlight.

    He felt poetic today.

She offered help, which wasn't something he was expecting. Honestly he had figured that he'd just reached the Operator of this castle much quicker than usual. He had no indication who she was, even the voice didn't register as female, but the outlines of the body shape gave slight indications though even that could have been a trick as well. Still. Enemy of my enemy. "This one's bigger than any other I've faced but they still have the same weaknesses." His glasses projected a small 3D recreation of the castle, turning it on upside down where there were six glowing panels, obviously some kind of refractor or repulser, keeping the castle aloft. "I'm going to take out three of these so it can't stay aloft. These three." The three on the left began to glow, "It'll send the ship crashing away from the town. If you want to help, cover me and don't let any of those things reach the town.."

"If the castle blows up in the air, it means I had to detonate it. If so, it would be super great of you to find two flying squirrels and tell them both to find Miss Mercury. They'll know what it means." He prepared to blast further into the air as the octopodian hunters broke through the ashes, before clarifying, "It… it means that. It means what I said." He tapped his sunglasses, "You can find me on private comms channel 1288C1. Oh! This is all being recorded for LacTube, hope you don't mind!" Be it incredible naivety, some innate trust, or a pure understanding that he couldn't take something this big entirely by himself, he had entirely spilled his plan to a full and total stranger who had done nothing but helped him by appearing in the nick of time.

As he blasted towards the air, Tsubasa knew the real reason he had trusted her so readily: Because Kuzu wanted him to attack her on sight.
