'Monster Dice' :

-Bellum, The Western Grasslands near Lake Kyrie-

Wearing her usual outfit of purple t-shirt with black skirt, white thigh-high stockings, and black tennis shoes, Diana carried Saint Sinner Valentine slung across her right shoulder with the safety on so that she did not shoot herself if she tripped and fell or caught the assault rifle's trigger on an obstacle. She wore a black headset that was the same type as Ami's to coordinate with the winged android, who was flying a short distance overhead and wearing a headset of her own so that she could keep in touch with her owner. Diana brought the faithful android with her because she would need the close air support.

"So it's just you and me, huh?" Ami asked Diana over the headset.

"Yes, Ami. It is just you and me." Diana replied calmly.

"OK, I'll be flying overhead. Let me know if you need me!" Ami said.

"OK." Diana replied calmly. She would definitely have need of Ami's help in the fighting to come.

She had been sent to this village to wipe out a raiding party of Iceberg Vikings who were among one of several raiding parties attacking villages in The Western Grasslands of Bellum. Since her home country's forces were occupied elsewhere and could not spare anyone to assist her she would have to go it alone. Diana had no problem with that because she had had worked alone for years.

Besides, this was a chance for Diana to begin redeeming herself for her unsavory past by defending the innocent people of Bellum from the Viking attack.

Diana hurried towards the village in question as fast as she could go. About twenty meters from the village she spotted two tall and lean individuals wearing white wolf pelts and brown armor walking past a wooden house they were looking for something... or someone. Diana brought out Silent Hunter and slowly took a knee, then took a quiet breath and aimed for the right arm of the man on the left who was hanging back a short distance from his partner. She squeezed the trigger and fired a single shot that found its mark, hitting him and leaving a mark but drawing his attention and that of his partner.

The two men brandished their knives and rushed at Diana, who dispelled Silent Hunter, stood up, and prepared a Soul Wave spell. After forming a baseball-sized ball of shimmering pale blue magic in her right hand Diana raised the hand and waved it from left to right, releasing a wave of shimmering pale blue magic at the two men. They moved quickly in an effort to get to her before she could cast the spell, but she managed to hit them with the spell anyway. They took the hit and kept running until they reached her. Once they reached her the two of them began working together to cut the huntress into ribbons.

The one she had shot stopped in front of her, then swung at her torso with a blade that was shimmering blue. Diana turned her left arm towards him and took the strike on her left arm just below the sleeve of her shirt, causing her to feel an intense cold sensation like she had suddenly come down with frostbite. The enemy on her right lunged at her with a stab aimed at her midsection, but she dodged right and turned to face him, then tried to hit back with a right-handed punch aimed at his face. The punch missed by a comfortable margin thanks to his speed and agility and the two men swiftly retreated and vanished from sight behind the building they had been standing in front of when combat started, leaving Diana with a cold left arm and a question.

They could have easily killed her had they kept up the attack.

Why had they retreated all of a sudden?

Diana did not know for certain, but she did not have long to ponder that mystery because she had something else to worry about.

Diana spotted someone heading towards her and she turned towards a burly individual wielding two axes and running towards her as fast as he could go. He was a good distance away and heading towards her via a path that led deeper into the village, but he was closing in with a speed that was surprising for someone of his musculature. He had likely spotted her purple shirt that stood out against the terrain while she was fighting the two knife-wielding men and ran towards the fight.

Diana turned her attention away from the two men who had gotten away and towards the burly newcomer who was clearly spoiling for a fight. She needed to find a way to take him out quickly before he could close in and literally cut her to pieces. She would not have long to find a way to attack him before he closed in.

Diana raised her hand to fire a Soul Spark spell since it was quick for her to cast. Diana formed a golf ball-sized ball of pale blue shimmering magic, pointed the palm of her right hand towards the charging burly Viking, and fired the spell. The Soul Spark hit him in the chest, but he had no reaction to it, not even acknowledgement that he had been hit. He just kept charging until he reached her. Once he was within range he began swinging both axes furiously, forcing Diana to dodge for her life.

Diana jumped back a single leap to try and get some space in which to cast another spell, but the man was relentless. He easily closed the distance and resumed his furious attack, swinging both axes in an alternating pattern. Diana was forced to step back and raised her right hand to cast another spell when a knife flew towards her head from diagonally left. The huntress quickly ducked under it and popped up just in time for the burly Viking to kick at her head. She had gotten up quickly enough to avoid a kick to the head but took it to the left knee instead, causing her to stagger back.

Diana raised her right hand and prepared a Spirit Drain Beam. She fired the pale blue beam of magic at the Viking and hit him, but he ignored the spell like it had never been cast. Diana was forced to step back repeatedly as the opponent swung his axes in an alternating pattern of the left axe descending diagonally at her, then his right axe descending diagonally after the first one had been lifted up for another attack. Diana dodged the repeated axe swings while trying to figure out how to take the man down before one of his weapons connected with her unarmored flesh. While the burly Viking was busy swinging his axes at her Ami came in over the headset.

"Diana, there's two guys standing at the corners of that building in front of you!" Ami informed Diana. Just then Diana spotted the man on the right perform a graceful spin that looked like it had been well-practiced, sending a knife speeding towards her just before emerging from the spin. She barely dodged it with a duck and popped up, then jumped back a single jump to avoid the swinging axes.

"Can you hit them?" Diana asked Ami while dodging for her life.

"No, they're too close to that building!" Ami replied. Diana did not waste time with an elaborate response because she was too busy dodging the ceaseless attacks she was being subjected to.

"Do not fire. Keep flying." Diana instructed as a knife whizzed by her left ear by the slimmest of margins when she tilted her head right to avoid it.

"OK!" Ami said. Diana focused back on the axman and turned around, running then quickly dashed out of the way using her Reaper's Sprint ability. She retreated 100 meters to get away from both her attacker and the two men who had been throwing knives at her. The burly Viking was undeterred and simply started charging towards her to close the range. The two men who had been throwing knives at her abandoned their cover and started to move in on Diana.

Diana needed to take them out fast so that she only had to deal with the ax-wielding man charging at her, so she prepared and fired a Spirit Drain Seekers spell at the three enemies. The three projectiles fired and quickly homed in on the men, striking the two knife-wielding men and causing them to collapse onto the ground. The ax-wielding Viking was hit but charged at her like she had thrown a teddy bear at him instead of one of her most powerful spells. Diana sighed.

This fellow was going to be tough to take down.

Diana took a moment to breathe before he closed in. She exhaled and went back to dodging more attacks while trying to think of a way to hit back. She needed to take him down fast because more enemies were bound to be on the way. Diana happened to glance down a path in the village four houses from the left of the house where the knife-wielding men had been walking at the start of the battle and groaned. Another burly Viking with two axes was on the way.

This was getting out of hand.

Now there were two of them.

Faced with two burly Vikings seeking her blood, Diana had little choice but to make another tactical retreat. If she stood her ground they would easily butcher her. Diana quickly turned around and used a Reaper's Sprint spell to retreat another 100 meters to give herself some space in which to cast a spell. At the end of the dash Diana turned around and channeled pale blue magic into her right hand, then performed a "flash step" that put her right in front of the first Viking.

She reached out with a skeletal hand and touched the man on the chest as he approached her. Her Touch of Death spell hit him, but he was clearly unimpressed with Diana's spell and backhanded her across the left cheek the moment she returned to normal, sending her staggering. Diana took another step back as the Viking went on the offensive with a series of axe swings that forced her to keep stepping backwards.

"DIANA!" Ami shouted over the headset. Diana saw the winged android fly in low from behind the Viking and begin charging her arm cannon, then fire a thin beam of golden light at the Viking who had just struck Diana. The beam hit him and the man slumped to his knees, swinging both axes feebly at Diana one last time before he fell forward to the ground and breathed his last. Diana took a quiet breath, but her relief did not last long. The second Viking quickly approached her and picked up where his colleague had left off, swinging his axes in an alternating pattern.

Diana stepped back again and the man lunged forward with an axe swing, grazing Diana's left arm with the axe blade and hurting her badly, even drawing a small amount of blood... she was fortunate that she did not lose the limb from the axe blow. She stepped back and felt her left arm go cold in the area where the axe had grazed her. Not content to land a grazing blow, he was soon back in her face and attacking with everything he had. Ami zoomed in low from behind the man and fired a shot from her arm cannon that hit him in the back, but it did nothing to deter her attacker, who kept up the pressure on the huntress.

Diana was definitely at a disadvantage. The burly Viking was at close range and close range was where Diana fared the worst. In contrast her attacker was right at home in close combat and kept up the pressure until Diana made a misstep and fell backwards onto her back. He stopped at her right side and swiftly kicked her in the right side of her torso for another painful hit. Diana rolled away to the left for a meter and quickly got up, then began to run for her life towards an open area with the Viking in hot pursuit.

"Diana, there's four more of those knife-wielding guys heading your way!" Ami alerted Diana. As she ran Diana looked behind her to the right and saw four of the knife-wielding men running down the path leading out of the village. The huntress continued to run as Ami hovered in the air roughly ten meters above the edge of the village where Diana had started the combat. Ami began to charge her arm cannon until a large ball of energy formed on the end of her weapon, then pointed down and fired the attack. Five golden beams of light began to home in on the burly Viking chasing Diana and the four knife-wielding men hurrying to join the fight. Two of the knife-wielding men looked up in time and did a diving jump to the side, avoiding the beams that harmlessly struck the ground thanks to their sudden change in direction.

The other two kept running and were hit by the homing beams, as was the Viking pursuing Diana. The pursuer did not care that he was hit and kept charging. Diana ran for three meters more and suddenly looped around, dodging the burly Viking's axe swing aimed at her head. She ran back towards the village and two of the knife-wielding men moved to the right to cut her off so that they could box her in between the burly Viking and themselves. Diana noticed that the other two men had disappeared, presumably back into the village.

She would have to deal with them when she encountered them. Right now she had two men in front of her and one man behind her and she was literally on the run. The two men who were trying to cut her off closed in on her and were within arm's reach, but Diana darted right and barely dodged their attempts to plunge their knives into her left arm and left shoulder. She continued to run with the ax-wielding Viking hot on her heels and suddenly darted left, running back towards the open field to throw off her pursuers and put some distance between her and them.

Diana needed to strike back against the Vikings soon, but she did not yet have an opening to do so. She would just have to be patient and stay moving until an opportunity presented itself.

As Diana ran for the open plain to try and put some distance between her and her attackers she heard Ami come in over the headset.

"Hold on Diana! I'll help you!" Ami promised. Diana continued to run and looked over her shoulder to find the two knife-wielding men had disappeared back into the village after Ami's demonstration of the benefits of air power. That left only the burly Viking relentlessly chasing her like a heat-seeking missile and one enemy was easier to fight than five of them at once. Diana looked over her shoulder to see Ami flying in low and lining up a shot on the man.

Diana looked forward and kept moving as Ami flew it and fired a single shot at the man. It hit him with no effect and the huntress had to keep on the move if she did not want to end up as mincemeat. Eventually Diana got an opening and used a Reaper's Sprint spell to dash forward, ending up 100 meters away from her pursuer.

Knowing that he would get in her face again before very long, Diana prepared a Soul Sniper spell and fired it at the man. She hit him with the shimmering pale blue beam of magic and he continued to charge like nothing had happened. Diana had time for just one more spell, so she prepared and fired a Spirit Drain Bolt with her right hand, throwing any spell at him she could to try and weaken him enough to bring him down before the knife-wielding men could join the fray and make life even more difficult for the huntress. The fist-sized bolt of pale blue light hit the Viking and he closed in with her, immediately launching into a series of attacks aimed at cutting Diana to pieces.

She was again forced on the defensive, stepping back and away from him while trying to find an opening in which to cast another spell. Diana looked behind the attacker and saw Ami hovering a short distance overhead while charging another attack. Diana continued to dodge the alternating axe swings and Ami fired a thin beam of yellow light at the man, hitting him squarely in the back. He simply kept attacking.

Diana continued to dodge until she got an opportunity to run and broke into a dash towards the village. She could do what the knife-wielding men had done and use the village for cover. The huntress ran towards the village but before she could get ten meters two of the knife-wielding men suddenly appeared from around the corner of a building and performed a twirling throw at the same time, lobbing a knife apiece right at Diana. Diana managed to avoid them by sheer luck by suddenly shifting her momentum and performing a u-turn that pointed her towards the charging burly Viking again.

He seized the opportunity and tried to clothesline her as she ran towards him, but she ducked under his arm and kept going. She had had a lot of near-misses and she was not sure how much longer she could keep it up. Ami hovered overhead and prepared another attack, forming a big ball of light on the end of her arm cannon as two of the knife-wielding men joined the pursuit. Diana was so busy looking over her shoulder that she did not notice the two men standing twenty meters to her right until it was too late.

They twirled in unison and threw knives at her. Diana dodged the one aimed at her head by leaning her head forward but was hit by the one aimed just ahead of her when it hit her right shoulder, causing that area of her arm to go temporarily numb from the cold. Overhead Ami fired an attack down on the men, causing five beams of light to chase them. This time all five beams hit their targets.

Diana pulled the knife out of her shoulder while on the run and tossed it on the ground while she kept going. She had taken some hits, but she was still in this fight. She needed to go on the offensive soon and take out that burly Viking so that she could get a respite that lasted longer than a few seconds. She had thrown quite a few spells at him and nothing had even inconvenienced him, let alone slow him down. These Vikings were tough customers, a lot tougher than she had expected them to be.

She had underestimated their toughness and guile and had taken a few hits because of that mistake.

That was what she got for underestimating her enemy.

No new enemies have been defeated.

Diana was on the ropes. She had taken a few hits and she did not know how much more punishment she could take before she went down for the count. She had tapped deep into her magic reserves and she was not sure how much more she had left before she was unable to use her magic. It was time to put Saint Sinner Valentine to work and at least fight to the finish instead of meekly waiting to be run down and chopped to mincemeat by the burly man who had been chasing her all this time.

Diana took it off of her back in mid-run and held the grip in her left hand, then performed a Reaper's Sprint to put 100 meters between herself and her muscular pursuer and his fellows, then stopped and turned around. The knife-wielding men had all emerged from cover in anticipation of an easy kill. They had good reason to anticipate that they would be able to run her down and kill her. She had been on the run for the past several minutes and she was starting to run out of stamina.  Then something changed.

Diana felt a surge of dark energy from her weapon, something she had never felt before today. She also glanced down and saw a white aura emanate from the weapon. What did those feelings mean?

Diana did not know, but she needed to defeat them all now. She prepared and performed a Spirit Drain Seekers spell that fired off five pale blue projectiles, one for each enemy. All five of them hit their respective targets before they could react and all five enemies fell to the ground. The burly Viking hung on to life a little longer than his fellows... he raised himself up and swung an axe at her one last time before expiring.

Diana blinked.

The burly Viking had shrugged off everything she could throw at him before.

What had changed between earlier and now?

Was it those two strange things she had felt and seen when she had taken Saint Sinner Valentine off of her back?

Diana did not know if what she felt was a one-time thing or if it was something inherent to her weapon that she could call upon at will, but she was grateful for whatever had suddenly powered up her spells. She took a deep breath and exhaled loudly. She then began to walk back towards the village while Ami came in over the headset.

"Diana, are you OK?" Ami asked Diana.

"I am all right, Ami." Diana replied calmly while walking past the dead Viking who had been relentlessly pursuing her for the past several minutes.

"That's good because I see more people heading your way! Some guy wearing antlers and blue clothes is being followed by six red-haired people wearing brown leather armor!" Ami warned Diana. The blonde took a deep breath. So much for a break.

Diana continued to approach the village and at 80 meters away from the village she spotted three of the six red-haired people Ami had warned her about moving ahead of the man wearing blue clothing and antlers on his head, as Ami had put it. The blue-clad man motioned towards the blonde mage with his staff and the trio charged forward while the other three hung back.

"Here they come, Diana!" Ami warned the blonde of the incoming enemies. Diana continued to walk forward until they were fifty meters away. She stopped and prepared a Soul Wave spell, then cast it with a wave of her right arm, sending a horizontal wave of pale blue magic towards the red-headed trio. It hit them before they could even begin to try and dodge it and all three enemies crumpled to the ground.

The staff-wielding man did not looked pleased to see his fellows fall before Diana. He motioned towards her with his staff and the remaining three red-haired people charged around the man and towards Diana while he followed close behind at a run. The huntress took a deep breath and frowned.

This was going to be tough going.

Diana had come back from the brink of disaster, but she still had more fighting ahead of her. Three red-haired Vikings were charging towards her and the staff-wielding man in blue who appeared to be a leader was following close behind them. Diana knew exactly what to do.

She turned and used a Reaper's Sprint to dash 100 meters away from the oncoming enemies, then waited until they were 75 meters away from her. She then slung Saint Sinner Valentine around her body and a Spirit Dome spell in an effort to hit all four enemies at once. When Diana cast the spell the pale blue dome of magic emanated from her position and all four enemies were caught in it. The three red-haired enemies all crumpled to the ground simultaneously, but the blue-clad man jumped over their bodies and kept charging at her until he was within melee range. Recalling her experience with the axe-wielding men, Diana quickly went on the defensive and took Saint Sinner Valentine off of her body, flipping off the safety and putting its grip in her left hand so that she could cast spells with her right hand.

Diana fled from him and tried to put some distance between him and her so that she could cast another spell, but he was not letting her get too far ahead. Just like the axe-wielding men the blue-clad man was deceptively fast and he was effortlessly keeping pace with her. Diana needed to find another way to get some distance from him.

"Hang on, Diana! I'm heading your way!" Ami shouted into the headset. Diana turned her head as she ran and saw Ami flying in low. The winged android fired a single shot from her arm cannon that hit Diana's pursuer in the back, but he did not seem to notice that he had been hit. Diana knew that it was going to take a very powerful spell to stop him, but she had better choose her spell wisely. The Touch Of Death might do the job, but first she needed some distance in which to safely use it.

Diana continued to run as Ami flew just overhead and zoomed ahead of the blonde. Ami then banked left for a few meters and zoomed back towards the village as Diana turned around and faced the charging man. She raised Saint Sinner Valentine and fired a single shot that hit him in the chest, but again he did not notice he had even been shot. He swung his staff at her face and she ducked under it, then spun around and ran for ten meters with him close behind her.

When she reached the distance Diana spun around and prepared a Touch Of Death spell, then performed the "flash step". She reached out with a skeletal hand wreathed in pale blue flame and touched his chest, causing him to collapse to one knee using the staff as support to face her one last time, then falling to the ground, his staff landing on the ground to his right.

Diana looked towards the village and took a deep breath. She had won that battle, but she did not have long to celebrate because Ami came in over the headset with another message.

"Diana, there's three more people heading towards you! Two knife-carrying guys and another guy in blue!" Ami informed Diana.

"Are there any more of those people in or around the village?" Diana asked Ami.

"I don't know! I'll have to fly around and check!" Ami replied.

"OK. I will finish things down here." Diana replied. She took a deep breath and watched the three men run down the path leading out of the village and towards her. Diana saw that they were roughly 110 meters away from her and closing fast... the knife-wielding men were running a short distance ahead of the man in blue, which meant that she had better pick a crowd control spell or two and use it fast to hurt them as much as possible before they closed in.

Having regained the initiative to an extent, Diana saw the three Vikings running towards her with the two knife-wielding men taking the lead. The blue-clad man followed close behind them and Diana prepared a Spirit Drain Seekers spell to attack them all. Diana prepared the spell and watched as the two knife-wielding men suddenly split off and ducked behind different buildings as the blue-clad man continued to charge.

Diana cast the spell anyway and the single homing projectile hit the man in the chest, but he continued to run towards her without regard for his safety. He soon reached her and raised his staff, causing it to glow an icy blue. Diana turned and tried to run away from him, but the pain and the intense cold caused by a thrown knife landing in her right shoulder caused her to delay just long enough to be caught in an icy spell that hit hard and caused her to feel incredibly cold.

The badly wounded Diana managed to use a Reaper's Sprint to get away from the man before he could wind up with his staff to deliver a follow-up blow and she appeared 100 meters away feeling very cold and very hurt. However, she could not let up now. She had to win this no matter what.

Diana kept her eye on the man running towards her and prepared a Spirit Drain Bolt spell. She aimed it at him and seemed to "lock on" to him as he moved, her vision zooming in just a little. Diana punched forward and fired the pale blue bolt of magic; the man saw what was coming and tried to dodge with a sudden spin to the right, but the bolt simply adjusted course and hit him anyway. He collapsed to his knees and made eye contact with her, giving a look that suggested she was going to soon follow him in death before he fell to the ground and expired.

Just moments later Diana saw the two knife-wielding men coming at her from both sides and knew that she had been set up. The blonde jumped back to avoid the lunging stabs and retaliated with a Soul Wave spell. The man on the left was hit by the pale blue horizontal wave and crumpled to the ground immediately, but the man on the right had dropped to the ground to avoid the spell and had gotten to his feet with surprising swiftness, coming up swinging his knives at her.

He moved with speed and agility, deftly dodging any attempts by Diana to fight back and striking at vulnerable points such as her elbows and throat. Diana barely dodged those attacks by very slim margins but took a slash to the right shoulder and tried to strike back with unarmed attacks but found herself hitting thin air. The man saw that when Diana started dodging and trying to fight back he had lost the advantage of surprise and tried to retreat for the time being. Diana tracked him and prepared a Spirit Drain Beam spell to end the fight before he got away and hid somewhere in the village, forcing her to go in and track him down. If he got away he could possibly slip up on her again and literally stab her in the back, which was something that she really wanted to avoid.

She followed him with her right hand and waited until he almost ran into the village before firing the spell. She cast the spell just a bit ahead of him and the pale blue beam hit him in the back, causing him to pitch forward to the ground and land on his face. He lay motionless on the ground and did not move again.

Diana might have just won the fight.

"Diana, I saw what happened! Are you OK?" Ami asked over the headset.

"Barely." Diana answered laconically as she removed the knife from her right shoulder.

"Have you seen any more enemies?" Diana asked Ami.

"No, not yet! I'll keep looking!" Ami said as Diana took a deep breath. She was cold, tired, and had a few bleeding wounds, but she was still on her feet. That was more than the huntress could say for her opposition.

Diana took a few deep breaths as she listened out for Ami's report on whether she could expect any more opposition.

"I've checked around the whole village and haven't seen any other threats, Diana. You did it!" Ami finally reported back.

"No. We did it." Diana replied, being sure to give the winged android credit for her part in the victory. Without Ami to provide air support at crucial points and function as an eye in the sky throughout the battle Diana would have had much more trouble than she had experienced.

"Well, what do we do from here, Diana?" Ami asked Diana. Diana took a deep breath and shivered from the lingering cold caused by the spell cast by the Viking clad in blue.

"I will take a break for awhile." Diana replied truthfully. She had taken quite a beating and was in no shape to return to Capital Crocus right away. She needed to rest for awhile before she even thought about the return trip to Fiore.

"All right then. I'll be flying around if you need me!" Ami replied before going silent.

Diana breathed a sigh of genuine relief.

Diana had taken the worst beating she had taken since her duel with the Wild West gunslinger Mordecai during their clash in Fat Monsterland some time ago and she had survived. Diana had narrowly survived this battle and had not performed up to her full potential, but a win was a win. Now all she had to do was focus on recovering for a while before she headed back to Fiore for a well-deserved vacation... or what passed for a vacation for her. She could not stay inactive for very long before she went on the hunt for another job.
