    Public First Night [Open]

Post by Marius 12th March 2022, 8:39 am

A comfortable bed, two sizable closets, some shelves, a decent looking table with a matching chair, a small, lit lamp and a singular open window. This was the room that was now supposed to be his home for quite some time. It was cleaner than he had anticipated and much more spacious. But it felt very weird. It felt private. The building itself was bustling with busy people, so this quiet corner was a pleasant contrast, but Marius felt as if he was being a bit too comfortable with his new accommodation.

He had finished unpacking the modest belongings he had taken with him, and judging by the orange sheen coming through the window, the sun had begun setting. It was dinner time. Giving his room a final glance-over, he walked out into the hallway and firmly shut the door behind him. If he had remembered the introductory tour well, the cafeteria was next to the lobby. It would take him a while to get used to the large halls and high ceilings, but he liked the enclosed and complete feeling of the guild building. Quite different to his home, but he liked it, even feeling a little guilty for not being more home-sick. But he could think about that at night, now he needed to make his way downstairs.

Arriving at the dining room, he was a bit taken-aback by the large crowd present. Small groups cheerily chatting, lone individuals quietly enjoying their meals and a huge heap of people shouting over each other with the occasional laughter booming from their direction. It was hard to find the counter where he could get food, let alone a quiet corner just for himself. Oh well, he could worry about where he would sit after getting his food. On second thought, it was quite easy to find the place he could order at - one could easily tell by the small queue neatly formed in front of it.

Carrying his steaming plate of what seemed like game with rice and an aromatic sauce, he darted around the room again with his eyes. It seems like he had missed quite a few small tables that were completely empty. Taking his seat at one of them, he began eating his dinner and observed his surroundings.

Wearing her green, white, and gold outfit with black bike shorts on underneath the skirt, Leona also wore the matching boots and her Argent Gloves on her hands. It was not like she really needed to wear armor in Silver Wolf Guild Hall, but she had grown accustomed to wearing them and by this point they had become like a second skin. Aside from the silver plates and the rubies embedded in the back of each glove, she barely noticed that she was wearing them.

Leona walked into the guild dining hall to try and find something a little more substantial than coffee to consume. The Wizard Saint practically lived off of the beverage and she was fairly certain that she had built up a tolerance to it over the years because it took a fairly strong coffee to make her feel caffeinated. Then there was the fact that coffee was not technically a food... or was it? Who knew?

As the Wizard Saint walked into the dining hall for the first time in quite some time she looked around her and saw quite a few people in the area. To the best of her knowledge she had not seen any of them before, which was entirely her fault. Her poor social skills and her constantly working had contributed to her inability to recognize any of the faces in the room. Leona needed to work on her social skills and interact with people outside of her tiny circle of Samira Nassar, Masha Dymonrel, and a select few clients she had frequent interactions with.

Leona took a quiet breath and looked around for someone to speak to. She would wait until after her business was finished here, then go get something to eat or drink. The Wizard Saint looked around and spotted a tall blond fellow seated at a small table. She did not know why her attention had drifted to him, but it did. She was not sure if he even wanted to talk to her right now because he had a plate of food in front of him and she did not blame him for wanting to eat it while it was hot.

Leona decided to take the chance and talk to him. She was supposed to be the Wizard Saint of Courage, after all. Walking slowly over to his table to avoid causing a scene, Leona walked over to him and stood in front of the other seat. Once there she stopped and spoke to him.

"Hi there. I'm Leona Jarnefeldt. Do you mind if I sit with you?" Leona asked the tall blond fellow. If he said yes, she would sit down with him. If he said no, she would move on without a fuss and let him eat in peace.

Marius jumped a bit at the sudden question. He had not expected anyone to talk to him, much less see them as he was very focused on the dish in front of him. Quickly looking up from his plate, he saw the woman who had asked to join him. He hadn’t processed the question yet, because he was a bit perplexed by how she was garbed. The fashion was quite different and much simpler where he was from, and even from his few visits to the nearby city he had never noticed such extravagant clothes. Then again, looking around himself, he quickly noticed that he should probably get used to the unusual and stand-offish looks, as almost everyone in the dining hall looked just as unique.

Coming back to his senses from his thoughts, he realized that the question was still left unanswered. What he was asking himself was if he really wanted company right now. It was dinner time, after all, and he was used to either eating dinner alone, or in silence with his mom. Wouldn’t having company while eating be more counterproductive than anything? Then again, if he was supposed to be part of a guild, that would mean being part of a community, and he was well-aware of that. But what would he do? If he accepts her proposition and they sit together, what would they talk about? They were strangers, so… the weather? Or are they supposed to be more cordial, since they’re guildmates? What was he supposed to do? When it came to conversations, he was really out of his depth.

However, then an idea hit him. He could use his status as a newbie to his advantage here, no? Maybe it was ok for him to be shy and quiet, since he was just adapting to a new environment. He could also allow himself a faux pas or two and just blame his stress and exhaustion. Worst case scenario - he finishes his meal quickly and excuses himself with something. There should be a myriad of excuses to pick from when it’s one’s first night here, right? That is how it used to go in the books he liked to read, so it can’t be that different in reality.

“Oh, uhm, good evening, Miss Jarnefeld. My name is Marius. Oh, Marius Tridun to be specific. And sure, I don’t see why we couldn’t sit together.” he said as he gestured to the chair she was standing behind. “I arrived here today, so excuse me if I seem a bit out of it. Are you also new here?” He asked with genuine curiosity. If the two of them were going to dine together, might as well get to know each other a bit so he knows if he should avoid her or not in the future.

Tim had been told the best time to visit the hot springs were on the summer months because it is the time a hot spring’s water was the purest. But Silver Wolf’s hot springs were the exception to this rule where, instead of summer, the guildhall’s is packed with people on the winter months all the way to early spring. Because of the guild’s hot springs keeping its warmth all throughout the year, the coldest months became peak time. Tim had not been with the guild long enough to experience the shift in the number of patrons, but the sheer number of people on the guild’s dining hall were a lot more than what the staff had expected.

“I thought they canceled their reservation!?” “That’s what the front desk told us!” “Damn, pull the waiters back. We need more people in the kitchen-!”

Tim was already helping with restocking the restaurant with the day’s delivery. It mainly consisted of freshly slaughtered meat from the mountain village closest to the guildhall. He overheard the staff’s trouble with oncoming customers as he and a few others were doing their job. He quickly finished arranging some of the packed meat into the cold room and talked with them.

“Was it the clan reunion?” Tim asked one of the staff.

“Fifty of them, Tim! Oh, this is a disaster…” The maître d'hôtel, a woman older than Tim, answered. “They’ll be here any minute now. And one of the long tables haven’t been emptied- ah, here you all are!”

She blew past Tim and talked to the waiters who walked through the swing doors connecting the kitchen and the hall proper. “Have you kept one of the long tables empty?”

    “Yeah, but-”

“Oh, thank the gods! Help me get the table runners!” She didn’t even bother looking over the waiters, fully expecting them to follow.

“Tim.” One of them went to him, his eyes never leaving the maître d’hôtel’s way as he spoke. “There’s a couple that had their table set but haven’t been served yet. Mind doing me a favor?”

“He’s been hauling all afternoon, you know?” One of the other staff who came out of the cold room said.

The waiter in question couldn’t even be bothered to say anything else and jogged as they all heard maître d'hôtel call his name. The cooks kept doing their job, but gave an apologetic look Tim’s way. One of the workers who was with Tim patted his shoulder. “I would’ve gone and done it in your stead, kid. But unless you want me out there instead of you…?”

Tim looked at the man’s slightly dusty look. He didn’t have any issue with the clothes, Tim’s personal wardrobe consisted of the cheapest ones he found on Hargeon Town’s flea market. But all of them would be lying if they think the man’s shirt and cargo pants were the best fit serving customers over the other side. On the other hand, Tim was wearing his armor, Servant. It was quite literally a butler’s outfit.

With a sigh of resignation, Tim shook his head. “Why don’t we both go instead? Bet we could do it faster than just me jumping out there.”

He laughed and slapped the young man over his back.

By all accounts, Tim wasn’t obligated to help any of the staff. It was the gnawing experience of having nothing to do in his room that made Tim actively look for jobs to do. If not out of the field, then in the library keeping inventory of the books, cleaning the hot springs or helping the staff resupply the storage. Even as Tim straightened his outfit and headed out into the hall, it wasn’t out of altruism or a sense of service. It was just to keep any of his own thoughts at bay.

Now where are these love birds? Tim basked in the dining hall’s orange tint as the swivel doors swung open. He had taken a metal tray with a bottle of champagne and two wine glasses on top as he went outside. There was a noticeable difference between the purposeful noise of the staff hard at work behind him and the idle chatter of their patrons. It wasn’t his job to notice it, however, so he slightly shook his head and focused.

There were two couples on the hall: The first couple were a pair on their thirties while the second couple, Tim noticed, were in their twenties. The younger couple were on one of the smaller plain looking tables close to the counter, a stark contrast to the first couple’s fully set table. “Poor timing, huh. They would’ve gotten their seats there had it been any other-”

Oh? The first pair, Tim noticed, were already leaving. They were busy chattering as they walked out of the hall and left their table. With a small smile, Tim walked over the empty table and set the two wine glasses over and looked at the young blonde couple.

It would be a waste to just let this perfectly set table empty, wouldn’t it?

Leona received permission from the blond fellow to sit down and took the seat she had been standing behind. Once she was seated she made eye contact and listened to him talk. She learned that his name was Marius Tridun and that he was a new and very recent arrival to the guild. She recalled his question concerning whether she was a new face too and took it seriously.

"No, Marius. I've been a member of Silver Wolf for almost four years now. In fact I'm the Guild Mistress of Silver Wolf." Leona replied calmly and without ridicule. Even though it seemed like a lifetime ago that she had joined Silver Wolf thanks to Leila Vergious it had only been a few years. Now a few years later she was in charge of Silver Wolf. It was funny how things had worked out for her.

"I hope the timing of that declaration wasn't too bad, Marius. I figured that I'd be honest with you before we really got to talking." Leona expressed the hope that the sudden reveal of her high status within the guild would not upset him. She made that declaration because she wanted to be honest with him at the start instead of springing that surprise on him later. Leona also wanted to avoid being seen as throwing her titles around to awe people into deference and thus gain an unfair advantage. She really needed to work on her timing, though.
