Job Link: Archaeological Excavation! (D-RANK NEUTRAL) Job Signup Approval Link: Archaeological Excavation! Job Signup Approval It had been some time since Arthur’s latest adventure, the one wherein he had taken on a request from the sister company of the one run by the producers and distributors of the iLac to test out a magitek smartdrone followed by making a promo video for it. The idea was for him to make the video showing his usage of the product in question and then giving his consumer review of it to the prospective viewers of the promo video after which he had been expected to not only send it to the company’s HQ, but also upload it to the LacNet via his new iLac. Naturally, he had performed flawlessly on all accounts with the help of his manorial support staff and especially his personal care squad’s maids. Since then, he had gotten back to the daily grind of his everyday life part of which involved his ongoing psychic detective mage work, assisting his ultrawealthy and highly influential family and clan in the running of the multinational business conglomerate that they owned and ran due to his position as the sole heir to his family and clan as well as the next in line CEO of the associated multinational business conglomerate, as well as various other such tasks and obligations. The other part involved furthering his prowess as a mage slowly but surely and he had been making great strides in this regard as of late. In this manner, time had marched on for him until the present day, wherein once again, he was relaxing in his exquisitely designed personal manor located in the heart of Crocus, the capital city of Fiore, which happened to be his current main base of operations. Naturally, as was his routine and that of his diverse group of 6 personal monstergirl maids whenever he was at home alone and relaxing, they were keeping him company and had arranged themselves at various points around him. For instance, 2 were seated on the armrests of the large, rather comfy, and ornately designed couch while 4 were sitting on the ground at his feet, and the remaining 2 were resting their heads on his lap currently. Just then, his leisure time with his beloved maids was interrupted by the distinctive notification tone from his new iLac that he had set for any incoming job request notification from the standard job-bearing smart bulletin board in the heart of Crocus, that tone being the “Voices of War”, which was the exclusive and special DLC soundtrack given only to frequent players of one of his now most favorite iLac mobile game apps, namely “Oda Nobuna’s Ambition”. Curses…foiled yet again…what is it this time? Let me see…famous archaeologist in Forgotten Desert…requires mages to help with excavation…target…fossil of some ancient exotic creature…hmm, looks simple enough, I suppose… Arthur grumbled thus silently, but then refocused his attention with a visible frown on his face which made his hollow coal-black eyes with the dark circles beneath them look even more dead than they did normally. Upon noticing that, “Jeanne”, the head of his personal care maid squad and one of the two maids who was currently resting her head on his lap currently, spoke up with concern evident in her voice from her position on his lap “Master Edogawa? Is something the matter, sir? You look troubled…” Arthur’s reverie was thus interrupted by said maid and so, he broke his silence and then turned his attention to her, answering her “Indeed, I have just gotten a job request from a certain preeminent archaeologist asking for mages to help him excavate an ancient, exotic creature’s fossilized remains in the Forgotten Desert region of this world. Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise…for it may yet give me the opportunity to playtest that one psychokinetic art I have been working on as of late…” To that his head personal maid, aka “Jeanne”, smiled and nodded, expressing her understanding “Ah, you are referring to the one you were planning to christen as ‘Terrakinetic Art: Fissure’, Master Edogawa?” In response, Arthur nodded, and with a smirk on his thin lips he confirmed her words “That is one, yes. Now then, I had better start my sojourn there right now…and if the Norns above are willing, then my return here to you all will be upon the swiftest of wings possible.” Upon hearing that, the maids all got up and after standing in the usual line and bowing to him, they responded in perfect chorus as always, with “Jeanne” at their head “Very good, Master Edogawa. We shall do the needful on our end and raise the manor’s security level ‘Red’ until such a time that you return here to us.” Arthur nodded and smiled at the sight he saw before him, after which, he remarked one last time “Excellent, please see that you do just that. I am most pleased to witness this understanding and anticipation you all have displayed with regards to my wishes. Till I return to you all, then, au revoir.” He bade them adieu thusly and then set off to his bedchambers to get ready for his imminent trip to the “Forgotten Desert”. He did so in short order and then he set off for said destination and due to the distance between Fiore and itself, it took him quite a while to reach there and even longer to find the archaeologist who was his client in this case, no thanks to the blustering desert winds filled with blinding sand which blew constantly and without much advance warning. “Greetings!! Are you the last of the mages to respond to my request?!” Arthur heard the archaeologist in question ask him this in a magically amplified voice so that he be heard over the persistent, deafening howling of the desert winds and so, he replied in the affirmative to that query from his archaeologist client. After that, the archaeologist led him carefully to the dig site in question and showed him around the camp that had been set up by him and his students, all of whom seemed to be earth mages, from the surreptitious, swift, and brief magic signature analysis that Arthur had done upon them while greeting them. Then, there were also mercenary mages like himself who had been hired by the archaeologist client to assist in the excavation process. These ones were more varied in their magical repertoires ranging from wind to earth to even fire and water. Quite the motley bunch, this one is, and perhaps that is for the best in this case…as from what I hear of it, magical archaeology is a tricky business, indeed… Arthur mused thus silently as he finished making the rounds and greeting everyone of his temporary colleagues for this job request. Then, the archaeologist took him over to the dig site itself to show him their find and why they were having trouble with it. “Quite the magnificent specimen, eh Mr. Edogawa? I do hope we can do this successfully.” The archaeologist spoke thus, his words filled with equal parts admiration of the creature’s fossilized remains and his fear that the specimen would get damaged in the excavation process. So, Arthur asked him about the progress thus far and discovered that very few of the earth mages in the party had any sort of precise-application-type earth magic at all and were instead more area of effect only and could help by removing large piles of the excavated rubble. This applied to the archaeologist client as well and thus, he had been forced to resort to calling in reinforcements, so to speak. Well now, looks like my wish came true after all, so you have my gratitude, ye Norns above…I shall not fail you… Arthur mused silently while looking up at the sky with briefly closed eyes and halted a few paces ahead of the archaeologist who was currently accompanying him back to camp. Once everyone got ready, the archaeologist led the party to the dig site, and then all of them got to work assisting the archaeologist with the excavation. First, the archaeologist had most of the rubble that was too hard for the mundane equipment to remove be handled by his students. Once that was over, the wind and water users among the mercenary mages cleared out the finer debris as carefully as possible. Then came the final excavation process and here, the archaeologist client called on Arthur to step in since Arthur had informed him about his psychokinetic technique with terrakinesis earlier. “Carefully now, Mr. Edogawa…go as slow and steady as possible. Is that clear? This is a rather important fossil specimen in my professional field and so, it is imperative that it be extracted as cleanly and in as intact a manner as possible.” Arthur glanced sideways at the archaeologist client who was instructing him and nodded with a look of concentration on his face while remarking “Understood, sir.” Then, he refocused his attention on the fossil specimen before him and closed his eyes after which he steadied his breathing to tactical levels like a sniper about to take an ultra-long range shot at a target. Then, he used his clairvoyance to visualize the ground ahead of him which contained the specimen he was going to target and a few paces away it as well. Then, he called forth his psychokinetic technique by speaking the technique’s name since it was the first time that he was using it in the field outside of practice “Terrakinetic Art: Fissure.” With that done, he felt his psychic energies emanating towards the target fossil and so, he focused further still It must be done with laser-like precision…think of a laser and direct the psychic energies accordingly… Arthur told himself thus while trying to direct his psychokinetic technique properly and fortunately for him, his long hours of research and practice with this technique and prodigious talent for the supernatural arts ensured that he was able to perform it properly even though this was the first time that he was applying it so precisely instead of a simple AOE effect. Since he was doing so, as the archaeologist and his party watched, bit by bit, the layers of extremely fine debris were literally excised away from the specimen with an almost surgical precision, thus not damaging it in the slightest. This entire process took the better part of the day due to the injunction of being as careful as possible that lay upon him at the behest of the archaeologist client. However, thanks to the surgical precision with which Arthur had executed his technique, he managed to complete the extraction of the fossil specimen just before sundown. After that, Arthur could no longer focus and thus, let the wind mages cart the specimen off to the campsite and then collapsed a few steps away from the camp due to the sheer degree of mental and physical exhaustion that had overcome him by the end. Luckily, the archaeologist and his party carried him into their mutual camp and tended to him until he was fully revived and ready to be on his feet again. After that was done, he accepted the job reward from the archaeologist and headed back to Fiore and then to Crocus where his manor was, intending to take a good, long rest.
