[Appearance]
Char stands at about 5'10", with spiky, middle-parted black hair that runs down to the nape of his neck, almost like a lion's mane. His face and jawline cut a very distinct profile and give very little as he speaks, even despite him being very expressive. Char's wide eyes are most easily distinguished by their heterochromia, an obvious side effect of inheriting part of his mother's power. While one eye remains a normal sky blue-- his natural eye color-- his other eye's pupil is a chartreuse 'V' that sits within a blood red iris. He's rocking studs on both earlobes.
Even if he's just standing around, Char carries himself with a very outward posture. This is, of course, indicative of his general attitude towards interaction. He is a very bold man and this reflects heavily in his mien.
Normally, Char is sporting a navy blue sleeveless turtleneck, which greatly complements his lean, but fit form. For bottoms, he wears baggy navy pants, they're pressed-- almost like dress pants. He fits two slim black belts along the extended waistline of them. He tucks the legs of his pants into a pair of pointy soot-black boots, which have gold buckles that secure their tongues.
When he's out adventuring, Char dons a cuirass that consists of two shoulder pads and suspenders attached to a harness. The painted-on red symbols are what he considers to be his current coat of arms-- his mother's signature (the moon on the bottom) with an arrow cutting through its middle. They're made out of a sleek, durable metal that shines bright, but looks dark. The harness usually does a good job of bracing his lower torso and also serves the dual purpose of acting as a mount for his staff and sword when they are not in use. Char puts on a pair of nice black leather gloves whenever he is working, so long as the task involves physical labor.
Speaking of his staff and sword, they hang loosely from a few leather holstering loops that are fastened to the back of his suspenders. His sword "Groot Rand" is a red-handled, double-edged broadsword with no particularly special properties outside of its sentimental value.
His mother's staff, "Gebreekte Stok", is a strange anomaly in appearance alone. It's about as tall as Char himself, no doubt thanks to his mom's incredible height. Its upcurved top is almost mandible-like with the way it is structured and, as it gets brought in, the staff quickly becomes stranger at its foci, which is an odd glowing mess of misshapen cuboid particles that orbit around the orb at its center. The whole piece is constructed from this metallic substance that defies its outward look when touched, giving off this feeling of lacking substance-- almost like a liquid-- when handled. Its core glows whenever Char casts a spell from it.
[Personality]
Char is a perky fast-talker who often falls into his grifting tendencies when working to get what he wants. Despite that, he's very passionate and a hard worker. When he sets his eye on something, you can be sure that he puts his all into getting whatever he needs to done. However, the times when Char is actually, truly engaged with a situation are few and far between. So much so that he often finds it easier to fall between the cracks of society (what he grew up doing) than living honestly. People that know him for longer than a few weeks quickly understand that, while he is against outright evil practices such as unjustified murder, things like pickpocketing or shoplifting are rarely above him. In some ways, Char could be considered deeply immature in the way that he perceives challenging scenarios, as it's his acute lack of solid criteria for such that sees him forsaking his morals out of laziness.
Char's approach to life has been just about as frivolous as his average mien-- which is to say, he more has "schemes" than choices in career. He's constantly bumped around from low place to low place, but the place he stuck with the longest was wedding planning. To this day, Char considers that job to be his second favorite and had genuinely found his heart within it (though, he is not proud of that fact), until one day-- like usual-- he grew restless and changed over to his current track: Mage. Being a child of the streets, Char was practically born fighting; constantly forced to dig himself out of tough scenarios with only his own strength to rely on. If there was one thing he was thankful he got from his mother, it was his affinity for magic, which, by the time he decided to really focus on it was already tempered significantly through his experiences.
While he may not be conventionally intelligent or even remotely scholarly, Char can certainly be called clever. Behind his energetic salesman persona, there is a tenaciousness and sense of seasoned grit mixed with an intense understanding. Underneath it all, he is a warrior. While it may seem slightly defeatist, Char sees little value in trying to directly compete with strong spells. Instead of giving up thanks to this mindset, Char has worked rigorously to refine his mode of combat to be tricky in more than a couple of ways. This, he holds, helps to even up the score between the monster mages that exist out there and him. Clearly, he doesn't see himself as much of a competitive combatant, even despite his cocky appearance. Char believes that a superior mage can always find a way to defeat a superior spell.
Given his criminal nature, Char still ultimately feels a deep regret for his affinity for his current way of life, no doubt due to the life that his mother lead before him. He wants to do better for himself, but there are times when he doesn't know what to do but what he would consider the "wrong" thing.
[Likes]
Simple, Pleasurable Moments: Time spent with friends or the smell of a nice meal. Overall, the things that Char ends up craving the most are small pleasantries, but his grandstanding behavior readily shows that he doesn't strongly identify this. Things like watching the rain while in a place he worked hard to make rent for or reaching a new milestone in his self-taught magic training. He is a man with all of the tools to foster a vested interest in himself.
Integrity: In people, Char values integrity. It's not often that he makes promises himself, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he has no follow-through. In fact, one of the surest things about Char is that when he does make a call or promise, you can rest assured that he'll make it a reality, even if it might seem miraculous at first. When he sees someone else being true to themselves, he almost always reciprocates with some honesty of his own-- It's one of his most endearing qualities.
Trouble: While not a glutton for punishment by any means, Char's tendency for getting into hot water-- tricky situations and the like-- has long since evolved into a morbid appreciation for both the inciting act itself, and the subsequent escape from said trouble. While he does value his life and is not masochistic (meaning he doesn't actively look for tight spots to be in), he's had ample opportunity to understand his relationship with his work, which often puts him in these situations by proxy.
[Dislikes]
Agendas: Char may not mind, or even respect people with things to prove, but he cares little for big picture people and even less for big picture people who don't have the ability to back that ambition up. He grows particularly bored of politics very quickly, mainly because of the emphasis he places on the concept of the individual. While he has worked together with people in the past to achieve goals, he sees politics as an unhealthy mutation of that power-- one that serves to divide more than it does to conquer.
Cowards: Similarly to the disdain he views people with agendas, Char's distaste towards people who run away from their problems is quite high. This stems from the fact that Char has always worked hard to dig himself out of whatever hole he's in (whether it be self-inflicted or not). That being said, this mostly stems from him being forced out of many towns in the past for his criminal activities. He silently hates this fact.
Restrictions: Specifically, restrictions placed on his ability to accomplish his goals. As has been said before, when Char is motivated, he lets little get in his way. Translation: He is necessarily against confining circumstances that mess with his free spirit. Char is committed to doing what he wants, how he wants to.
[Motivations]
Prove My Legacy Wrong: Char's mother often acted as a specter that loomed over him in his youth. There were times when it seemed as if his mother's reputation preceded him completely and he quickly grew to hate that. His mother is far from a good person, a lecherous witch who preys on the hearts, souls, and minds of all people she came into contact with. She's a solitary being, with little need to form actual connections, one who bides their time in secrecy, building up power in order to further her desire for accumulation for the sake of it, and one who moves in large bursts of abuse of said power. Char is intensely bitter over his birthright, and always neglects to mention it whenever it doesn't come up. Though, there is something to be said of the way he doesn't take any action to hide his eye. In fact, this is mainly because he would rather have people surrounding him that take him in for who he is, not who he wants to be. He works as hard as he does sometimes to spite the mark his mother has left on his life, and ultimately strives to become the opposite of everything she stands for, but he has never managed to pull himself away from using her methods, which have always led to him having to start again. He is fifth in his ancestral line, hence the "V" that sits within his left eye. It's unfortunate that they share more in common than just their blood.
To Have a Home: Char is a man without a place in the world. Or, rather, one who hasn't had one yet. He's someone who has gone through many places and people just to survive, sometimes just because he felt the need to shy away from actual, genuine relationships due to him not wanting to let people down. Still, with his willingness to stand alone so many times comes his age-old longing for a place where he feels no such compulsion or tendency. Char took up the moniker of mage primarily because he wants to find that home. That was what wedding planning was missing for him-- even though it was something that he felt geniune passion towards, it wasn't something that pushed him to have people in his life he could call "family." Nobody in that business had been through the same kind of things that Char had, for as much as he loved it. Right now, Char just wants to find people who can be the family he never had growing up. Hopefully, he finds people that will be willing to shoulder some of his burdens, too.
To Challenge Myself and Grow: Of course, it wouldn't be Char if he wasn't relishing a little bit in whatever silly situation he gets himself into, life-threatening or not! There's a certain appreciation for his survivability that he's fostered over the years that shines through in his playful demeanor, even in the face of dire straits. Truthfully, he wants to become stronger so that he can hopefully do something important with his life, but when it comes to this, Char still manages to keep a pretty "it's not the destination, but the journey" attitude about him. His skill with magic is originally self-taught, which is a testament to his voracious appetite for experiences. He likes it when he comes across a tough opponent or challenging obstacle because he feels like he's forced to think creatively to solve whatever mess he's in. Since he sees his resilience as his best quality, it only makes sense for him to want to nurture and grow it.
Become a Beacon of Hope for Those Who Struggle: Char is pretty far from noble, but he feels that the concept is a little outdated nowadays anyway. People are imperfect, but that doesn't mean they still can't do good things, Char says. One of his most important motivators starting out in this next important step of his life is the desire to set a good example for anyone who might be struggling with themselves and the darker places of the world. He wants to show people who come from similar circumstances as him that reaching happiness from their position is not impossible. He's ultimately unsure of how he'll find success himself, but he would love to gain some positive notoriety for once in order to make a difference.
[Fears]
Faltering: The biggest thing that Char fears in life is falling back into what he considers to be the "easier" lifestyle-- stealing, scheming, and scamming. The three S's. As a street rat with a heart of gold who wants nothing but to be supported into making good choices for once, he lives in constant fear of it coming tumbling down and that crumbling being his fault.
His Mother: Char is deeply afraid of his mother and what she represents. He doesn't think or talk about her often, but he is definitely worried whenever she comes into the picture. Despite the values he holds dear, Char often seeks to run away from his mother's presence rather than facing it head-on (his usual approach). Her figure looms as a shadow within his heart.
Spiders: Char fears spiders because he was poisoned by one once, and never forgot that experience. The fear is irrational and silly, but he doesn't like dimly lit interiors because of it.
