Grumbling beneath his breath, Tor was taking his time as he walked towards the training grounds. Moving towards the training grounds was automatic for him, since it was one of the few places that he would whenever he had the time. He was constantly finding the opportunity to train with weaponry and his unarmed combat skills, and he would usually get his ass handed to him by the end of a sparring session. It was tough in the beginning, because Tor was used to integrating his lightning magic into his combat moves. Having to fight without relying on his spells left gaps in his usual line-up of attacks, those gaps created opportunities for his sparring partners to slide in and break his tempo.

In the beginning, it had been brutal. He sustained loss after loss, but each time after that, Tor returned, and gradually his win-loss record began to gain some improvement in them. He had to learn to fill in the blanks left by his spells, make sure whatever was used to bridge those gaps were executable and to ensure that it contributed enough to the combo to wrap it up at the end. It was truly trial and error through blood and sweat.

And so, when he had been assigned to attend this class, Tor felt like his soul had been sucked out of him. He wasn’t regretting how he had trained himself, but if he had known about this class earlier, he would have registered himself to attend it and use it to make up for his shortcomings in a much more systematic way instead of going through all those beatings.

‘Reminder to self, always check the notice board. Also, never completely trust yourself,’ Tor thought to himself when he reached the training grounds.

A small class of twenty Rune Knights were assembled to one corner of the training field and Tor instinctively walked over to them. All of them looked new, standing awkwardly individually or in small groups, while they waited for the class to commence.

Tor silently joined the class, standing at the back and then began looking around absentmindedly.

“I wonder what they will teach during this class,” Tor spoke out to himself, as he began to warm himself up, loosening up his joints and making a ton of cracking sounds that caused many of the other newbies in front of him to turn back in his direction. Some wore mocking expressions. Those Tor knew. They thought they were elites, a different breed of newbies who would be able to zoom up the ranks quickly because of some training they had been doing since childhood after getting inspired by their father or an older brother or an uncle that had or was serving in the Rune Knights. Tor had nothing against them, but he enjoyed beating down those types the most.

He looked around for the instructor that would be teaching the class, but after scanning the faces, none of those present looked like they were experienced enough so Tor just resolved himself to wait and do nothing else.
