Post by Aven Alveron 6th April 2021, 8:06 pm

The winter winds lashed at the Paladin's overcoat, as she trudged weakly through the tundra. She tucked her hood further across her face in defiance of the cold, warding off the snowflakes that so vividly reminded her of the horrors she'd just witnessed. Misfortune had befallen her platoon, a memory that would remain etched deep within her mind, haunting her waking hours, and tormenting her sleepless nights.

Pulling out her telecom device, she slumped against a nearby fern, surveying the desolation of her troops behind her. Guns lay dormant amongst the scattered bodies, coated in a blanket of freshly fallen snow. Whether they were dead or alive, at this point, was inconsequential to the mission: they had failed. Raising the device to her cracked and bloodied lips, the Paladin clicked into the Regional Headquarter's Frequency, and spoke in a shaken voice. "Private Yahontov, reporting in. The Mission is a failure: I repeat, the Mission is a failure."

A few breathless moments passed, as Private Yahontov dreaded the possiblility of radio silence. In the state her platoon were in, amidst the Pergrandian wild, they wouldn't last even a few days without rescue. A brief moment of relief drew a sigh from the Paladin, as a gruff voice echoed back. "HQ to Yahontov: what is your status?"

Steeling herself, the Private responded. "Alive, but barely. Sixty-eight soldiers, all incapacitated," She heaved, the winds constricting her breath and steadily slowing her pulse, "Unconfirmed dead or alive."

This time, she hadn't long to wait before HQ blurted back their next query, accompanied by the sudden pounding of fists on wood. "Son of a... How?! Intel was clear that Bellum had no forces stationed in Khilsnyek Pass!"

A short, wry chuckle escaped the Private's chest. "It wasn't Bellum's forces..." The scene was burned into her eyelids, so ludicrous and surreal that she couldn't bring herself to forget a single moment. As it began to play before her once more, like a nightmare upon a helpless child, she managed only three words more.

    "...It was a monster."

    *   *   *   *   *

Aven didn't normally agree with the cold. Having lived in a more temperate region most of his life, he found situations like these bothersome: the winds of the Pergrandian Tundra were fierce, and they spared man nor beast. Still, he'd taken heed of the Magic Council's call for aid in the brewing conflict between their neighboring nations. Having only looked the barest amount into the history of the two nations, it was fairly obvious to Aven that Pergrande was the aggressor in these border disputes, and the hostile actions were culminating up into what could possibly be a declaration of war.

More than anything, it was the hired Wizard's job to tip the scales of battle, and to that end, Aven had been sent up to a remote section of the Border, a place called Khilsnyek Pass. It was a thin mountain pass, apparently caused by the erosion from a long forgotten tributary, or so he'd been informed. Up close and personal, it was difficult to picture a river flowing through the shallow trail, now lined with blanketed fir trees and small traces of animal life. Tucking his white suit closer to his body, he allowed the thin, transparent shell of Dark Energy surrounding him to retain his body heat. Cold or not, he would need to be fully prepared for the battle up ahead, as according to Bellum's intel, there was a full platoon of Pergrandian Soldiers descending upon the pass within the day, and though it was an easily defendable choke point, the harsh weather and lack of outpost made it difficult for Bellum to station troops. His orders were to slow the advance of troops by any means necessary, and give Bellum's forces time to set up a counter-offense on the opposite end of the trail. A sound strategy, by Aven's mark.

Aven stood silently on the crest of an overhang, surveying the entrance of the Pass below. The mountains howled in warning around him, as the Pergrandian troops began to emerge from the woods, in a rather stiff and collected company. From a distance, and with the reduced visibility from the snowfall, Aven couldn't make out their numbers; however, he could tell it was a sizable amount. Their camouflage didn't aid his search, either, as they seemed to pour from the terrain and disappear in the same breath, his eyes catching only brief glimpses of black, and the tell-tale glint of Firearms: nasty weapons, he'd give them that. Aven had never squared up against a firearm, though he was familiar with the concept: a metal barrel, containing a small metal object packed with explosive powder, which would launch the projectile at an alarming speed when triggered. As far as their impact went, though, Aven was hard pressed to give them any credence; if he could survive a blow from one of the Black Diabolos of the Lost Desert, those tiny metal objects should be child's play.

After a long, deep breath, Aven exhaled, and disappeared from the clifftop, reappearing in the very center of the entrance to Khilsnyek Pass, the encroaching black particles of Dark Matter around him proving a strange and blatant contrast to the permafrost. As his Dark Energy began to surge, the infinitesimal dots began to blot the area, replacing and consuming the snowfall they touched. His left arm, as well, began to swirl with that same presence, as Aven readied himself the the inevitable assault. He'd be slowing them down, just as he'd been asked. As to their future pace, he planned it equal to the surrounding temperature: in the negatives.

Partnering Aven's entrance with his threatening aura, it didn't take long for the waves of bullets to begin raining down upon him. The soldiers in the front- seemingly infantrymen, from their uniforms- were visible to him now, and he to them. it was only a few moment before the lot of them had emptied their first clips into his body, sparing hardly a moment of hesitation. Despite himself, Aven flinched at the sudden cacophony gunfire, the sound far louder than he would've anticipated.

Still, as the front line lowered their guns, beginning to reach for their next magazines, Aven was left standing. The recruits paused in a moment of disbelief, as Aven took stock of his shields. The bullets, to him, moved at the pace of a ball thrown to a pet while playing fetch, and while his body couldn't respond in kind to dodge at that speed, the sheer sturdiness of his Dark Matter more than compensated for the impact of the bullets. From what he'd seen, about fifteen of them had open fired a full round, and they hadn't even broken past his Dark Energy barriers. Hm. All things considered, I expected a bit more from those weapons I've heard so much about. He shook his head, to clear the noise from his ears. Ah, well. There's only so much a mundane object can accomplish. Still, it've been troublesome if all of them we able to fire at him simultaneously: even his defenses could have been tested under the constant fire of so many weapons. Furthermore, as he surveyed his options, the bullets that had been deflected off his Dark Energy Barriers began to float up into the air around him once more, controlled by some kind of... magic? He didn't sense any Magic Power in the area, so it must've been some kind of mechanical trick, perhaps using magn

A different tactic was in order, and it was quite a simple one. So long as Aven was in front of their troops, their guns could easily focus him down; however, if he were in the midst of the other soldiers, that would hardly be the case. As the mysteriously controlled bullets shot toward him, converging on him with the intent to kill, Aven dissembled himself into Dark Energy with Vantablink, and reemerged in the middle of the fifteen forward guard that had fired at him first. By then, they'd finished reloading their magazines, but the result was the same, as their formation began to scatter and expand out and away from his incoming threat. Backpedaling through the snow, the recruits began to utter small cries of astonishment, as they noticed their bullets breaking past the dark energy surrounding Aven, only to watch them skitter harmlessly off Aven's silky white suit without a scratch. A simple trick, really, considering Aven's clothes were nothing more than constructed Dark Matter themselves: in a way, they could've been considered a part of his body, and his body was far and away too resilient to be harmed by such attacks.

At this point, Aven extended his right arm, allowing dark particles to swirl around it just as his left arm had already begun. Only three more pieces to go... Despite these soldiers being the enemy, Aven had no intention of killing them in cold blood. His mission was to slow their progress, and he would sooner abandon his post as Ace of Fairy Tail than become some ruthless killing machine for any government. With that in mind, draining their vitality and will to continue their trek would be more than sufficient, in his mind, thus his plan involved nothing less than his ultimate ability: the summoning of the Forgotten Realm.

The soldiers' guns were no longer a threat, as he continued to move along with the retreating troops. Their line was steadily breaking, falling into chaos, and while guns still fired, and bullets continued to skitter off his dark matter protections, Aven paid little mind: his body was far denser than the average humans, and even the impact of the bullets wasn't enough to greatly impact his mobility. Aven was far from a speedster, and in fact, he'd likely lose any contest of speed with his fellow Fioran Wizards, but his sturdiness made it difficult to stop him from moving when he did. Like a juggernaut, Aven's legs plowed the snow aside as though it were simply air, and he bobbed and weaved through the soldiers' ranks making sure to position himself consistently in the midst of a number of them, nearly invalidating the advantage of their numbers. A few of them attempted to grapple him, but found their attempts foiled by a well placed kick or deflection of their grasp. He may not have been fast for a wizard, but these soldiers were much worse off, and with his perception running at the speed of the bullets passing by impacting his shields, they might as well have been in slow motion.

It was then that a few different uniforms appeared from the crowd, wielding what Aven considered an actual threat: Greatswords. Not only that, but their movement were practiced and calculated. As they strove through the snow, Aven realized their speed was close to his own, and they wouldn't be so easy to deflect and evade. Furthermore, the gunfire remained unceasing, soldiers dipping in and out of the line of fire to position Aven in harms way. They were tenacious, he'd give them that, and as the sword wielders closed in- two hulking monsters of men- the clash of blade against shield began in earnest. Unfortunately for the rest of the platoon, being engaged so closely with their allied melee combatants, it became increasingly difficult to find avenues of fire that wouldn't also risk causing their own casualties.

The two sword wielders were quick, but that wasn't all. One of them seemed to disappear, reappearing behind Aven and bringing his sword down in an incredibly destructive arc. Aven's attention split for a moment, and within that moment, the second also blinked in front of Aven, quicker than he could perceive, and began a similar arc up toward his chest, in an attempt to impale him. Aven's sense were firing off warning signals, as he watched the second swordsman's blade pass straight through his Dark Matter shell, straight through his shields. He had only a moment to react, but he'd seen this type of trick before, though he hadn't expected to need to use his ace in the hole so early: channeling his will, he reinforced his Suit with the surrounding Dark Matter, causing the two blades to collide with a loud CLANG!

Pain shot through Aven's body, as the process tore a bit of the dark matter from his body, as well. He didn't give it another thought, before he Vantablinked back up onto the ridge he'd stood before, gasping in shock. He'd marked the spot, in case anything had gone wrong... and matters had certainly gone terribly, terribly wrong. Those blades were a problem, and even as his body steadily recovered it's vitality, he knew it was time to stop toying with the enemy. The pain faded steadily, and particles began to swirl around his left leg as well, as furious as the fire now burning in his chest. Unfortunately for his adversaries, Aven was near impossible to track by any magical signature: his Dark Matter wasn't based on magic, and as he hadn't revealed his position beforehand, he'd just enough time to recover his wounds... before taking this as seriously as he should have in the first place.

Aven's wounds continued to knit, as he surveyed the now frantic Pergrandian Force. They were regrouping into a closer knit formation, attempting to scope out any additional threats in the area. After all, there was no guarantee Aven was alone, and what reason did they have to believe otherwise? It was likely obvious, at this point, that their stealth mission had become an engagement, and was no longer viable as a surprise to Bellum's forces: if it were anyone but Pergrandian Soldiers, Aven may have expected them to abandon the pursuit. However, he suspected by their sudden grouping that this wasn't the case, and he quickly realized why.

From behind the platoon, a figure emerged: a tall, gaunt woman, wearing a far different uniform. Their leader? It could've been; at the rate she seemed to be barking ordered, and the sheer speed at which they were followed, it was the only guess he could postulate. Their configuration was would be unfortunate in just a few moments, of course, as Aven's right leg began to swirl with dark particles, the black dervish now present on all of his limbs. The platoon was nearly to the opening, just out of the fir trees and gathered in the small clearing before the mouth of the Pass. They were as vulnerable as they were going to be, as they probed the mountainside with their sights, searching for Bellum agents to pump full of lead.

Above them, a soft glow began to emit from under Aven's shirt, as magical Glyphs appeared, releasing stored magical energy and supercharging his system. He was going to need all the dark energy he could muster, in order to control what came next. For the first time that day, Aven wore satisfied grin. It was showtime.

Wading through Ash and Smoke Empty Re: Wading through Ash and Smoke

Post by Aven Alveron 9th April 2021, 1:01 am

Aven steadied himself, and his a deep breath, summoned forth his final form, the deluge of dark energy surrounding him pulsing and quaking with the air as the space around Aven began to warp and twist. A massive burst of dark energy alerted the platoon below that something was wrong, and their sights trained on the overhang above them, a section of the frontline firing off a volley of shots into the vicinity. A few grazed Aven's body, but as the full power of the Forgotten Realms flowed through him, all they did was crack and fracture against his newly formed armor. His power raged against the fabric of space around him, tempting and twisting it, as an aura of dark energy expanded out from his body, draining and destroying the latent magic energy around him.

The sheer amount of potential Aven felt in this form... it was staggering, enough to warp one's senses and blur their judgement. There was good reason he didn't use it often: moment by moment, he could feel the pull of the Void, calling out to him, whispering for him to give in and accept oblivion. He flexed his talons, before summoning a pure white magic circle. The Swordsmen come first.

Wading through Ash and Smoke Aven_t10

Appearing in the midst on the platoon, beside the two Swordsman, Aven reached out a hand, placing the Seeker Circle in between them. As he appeared, his aura strangled and paralyzed the entire platoon, draining their vitality and power, converting it into Dark Energy which swirled as a massive maelstrom around Aven for a hundred meter radius. The snow whipped into a frenzy, devoured and replaced by black particles that whirled in the wind like a harrowing blizzard. Those who could see only watched, as ten bolts of Arcane Energy pulsed from the Circle, splitting between the two Swordsmen and breaking their armor into pieces, leaving them broken and unconscious in the blackened tundra.

Before Aven could continue on, however, the Greatswords on the ground levitated into the air and struck out at incredible speed. With a quick motion, Aven flicked his wrist, causing Szoth'aral, a massive black blade of pure dark matter to appear in his left hand, and he deflected the onslaught, trapping one on the ground with a blinding slash. The second blade was caught by that woman he'd seen before, unaffected by his aura, as of yet, who leapt through the air and brought the blade down with a crushing force to cleave him in two. Pivoting his right foot onto the blade to keep it trapped, Aven met the blow with an equally decisive chop block, the weight of Szoth'aral and their exchange keeping the woman suspending in the air. "You're resilient!" He spoke only briefly, his voice echoed and layered with reverberation, as their clash sent particles swirling away in a small shockwave.

"You're dead." The woman's voice dripped with adrenaline, and with a surge of an invisible power, she pushed Aven back a few paces, free the blade below and levitating it into the air around her, gripping the first blade with two hands and adopting the highlander stance. In a flash of steel, she surged forward at an inhuman speed, attacking with both the blade in her hands and the levitating blade simultaneously. As her speed increased into an incredible rate, however, Aven's own perception heightened, feeding off of her vitality and power. Sparks flew as their blades danced in the midst of the platoon, the sound of metal on Void filling the Pass with a shrill and chilling echo.

In the midst of their bought, a grin passed over Aven's face once more, as the distortion of space around the area came to a climax. Blow after blow, the two of them exchanged, Aven's defensive sword style and faster reflexes just enough to fend off the pure aggression from the Pergrandian attacker. As they continued, however, the advantage steadily became Aven's, and with a heavy cleave, Aven trapped the blade in her hands against the ground, breaking the blade in two. A swift kick sent the woman hurtling backward, and though she righted herself in the air with that same invisible power, it no longer mattered. The rest of the platoon was beginning to regain their senses, butthe space around them had already distorted beyond belief, and as Aven raised his free hand in a claw motion, the sky above warped into a blackened moon, the landscape twisted and dark. No longer Fir Trees or tundra, mountains or passes, but a massive, black chapel rose in the background. Dark particles floated freely in the air, and the the soldiers found their energy draining even faster moment to moment. Aven called out to them, in a final gesture of courtesy. "This is your final warning: Khilsnyek Pass is off limits."

The platoon's leader responded by sending the broken pieces of the greatsword hurtling at Aven, which he summarily deflected. "I won't negotiate with a monster." The woman spat the words like venom, but her voice shook as she did so. The soldiers, too, had their weapons aimed, but waiting for a queue to fire. The woman raised her hand forward, suppressing the growing dread and emptiness that filled her psyche. "K... kill him where he stands!"

Aven shook his head. "The hard way it is, then."

Private Yahontov's recollection of the scene was vivid, a nightmare that would never end. She ordered her soldier to fire on the creature, and yet their bullets simply grazed off his armor. Grenades were like gusts of wind to him, knives shattered against his skin, and as the monster waded through her troops, dread began to descend upon her. Her psychic intuition was blaring alarms, as her strength and stamina was sapped from her body. Perhaps, the most sinister fact of all, however, was how this monster was attacking them.

    ...Or, rather, how he wasn't.

She watched it sit down in what looked to be a Throne, made from the same swirling black ichor that plagued whatever god-forsaken horror they'd been dragged into, the particles drifting in and out of their lungs and stealing their life away. She fared better than the soldiers, whom she watched exhaust their rounds into the creature to no avail. Some of them attempted to run, only to fall into unconsciousness before reaching outer ring, some kind of barrier that'd cut them off from the world they knew. She looked back in horror to the monster on the throne, and anger flared into her chest, a defiance of her fate: That.... that BASTARD! She wanted him to have a grin, an evil smirk that befit his monstrous form. Instead, he wore a face of pity, as though he truly would've rathered their surrender, as though they weren't worth his effort!??!

"DIE, MONSTER!" Surging forward with all the psychic power she could muster, Private Yahontov began a desperate assault on the beast, but she couldn't even get close to landing a blow: even as he sat, stock still, the energy around him slowed her attacks to a crawl, an overwhelming pressure that exuded from his body keep her at bay. She clutched her chest after a single flurry of blows, feeling her heart beating wildly and irregularly: it felt as though she were being crushed, like the monster had it's talons around her heart, and was squeezing the life straight out of her.

Her assault continued for as long as she could manage, but soon enough, the exhaustion from overexertion set in, and her onslaught of fist and foot came to an end. The creature spoke, then, rising from the Throne to survey alongside her the field of dead or dying soldiers. His words chilled her to the bone, shattering any sense of courage she had left. As he leaned over her exhausted form, the hulking abomination uttered a command, his talons gripping firmly into her shoulder, just as they had dug into her very being. "Tell your superiors that their soldiers won't be so lucky, next time they invade Khilsnyek Pass."

Private Yahontov's blood ran cold, and she could only stammer and stagger away. It was... letting her go? She could live! Primal instincts took over, and the Paladin took off across the wake of fallen soldiers, fear driving her onward. How could they have known that such a monster would have awaited them? How could she have stopped it? No... It no longer mattered. Not a single soldier was left standing, and even as she left the oppressive aura, it was as though she could still feel the creature's hand on her shoulder, like a permanent mark burned into her soul. She'd never return to this place as long as she lived.

    Never.

As she reached the edge of the barrier, it began to dissolve and twist, the black snow of the nightmare realm they'd been trapped in fading back into the familiar and loving tundra of Pergrande. She'd never been so relieved to see the snow of her homeland, and looking back, there was nothing in the wake of the battlefield: only her soldiers, being slowly covered with a fresh blanket of snow, steadily reclaimed by the land from which they came. The monster was nowhere to be seen, Pergrande's winter replacing what it had lost. All she could think, as she stumbled away, was a single, harrowing sentence, repeating over and over in her mind.

Khilsnyek Pass is off limits... Khilsnyek Pass is off limits....
