Teresa was just sitting on a bench several hundred feet away from the inn. Rain was pouring from pitch black clouds and only the thundering lightning sometimes lit up the place. Her silver eyes followed the small streams that were running down the path to find puddles to converge in. Trees were groaning under the strain of the gusts of wind combined with the downpour. All in all a pretty ghastly evening.

~Although it had to be said that if she was currently sitting in a rain forest, this would probably count as a beautiful spectacle. Alas she was now.~

The silver eyed witch was sitting, protected from the elements by a squared kekkai force field, observing and waiting. A cigarette bungled carelessly from the corner of her mouth. “Hmmm I wonder who is supposed to meet me here.” She pondered, wondering whether it would be a fellow guild or perhaps it would be Lyre.

When she had chosen this job she had noticed the requirement for two mages to be present. Well technically if you wanted to nitpick, the oaf at the desk had refused her for being unqualified to do it alone. The oaf! However after having threatened to redecorate his face with her slipper, he had offered to help her out. If possible, he would reach out to another member or maybe another guild and try to arrange for back-up. All she had to do was go to the inn and wait there.

Off course, maybe this was all this a ruse to get me out of his hear. She thought to herself as she inhaled one last time before pulling the cigarette from her soft lips. In a pavlovian kind of way she automatically licker her lips, before she exhaled and flicked the cigarette away at the same time. Both the smoke and the cigarette passed harmlessly through her barrier. “Hmm maybe I could just take a look inside.” She said lazily as she stretched herself out.

Teresa could not remember how long she had actually been sitting on the little bench. Just from the fact that she was stiff, getting to the second stage of intoxication and had gone through 1,5 package of cigarettes, she would estimate roughly fifty minutes. Approximately. Roughly. Maybe fifty five.

As she got up she was a bit wobbly on her feet. Taking her time she then straightened out her silver grey body suite and making sure the claymore was strapped tightly to her back.

When she was satisfied she was dressed properly and no longer wobbly she began to make her way to the inn. Of course the job sheet had stated she only needed to kill the things in the basement. However she was not in the habit of barging in. So instead she undid her shield and began making her way towards the window, intending to get a reading on what was going on inside.

Within seconds a loud curse escaped her lips as she managed to step into a puddle deep enough to soak her entire feet until the ankle. “Bloodie rain!” She mumbled under her breath as she kept moving towards the window.

At least she'd had time to return home before this one. Kotomi had spent a few days resting after the run-in with the ogre, almost immediately following the battle with the gargoyle. Two mysterious messages had sent her on these trips, and despite the fact that she was paid, it was a strange thing to receive challenges from a random stranger. Someone was testing her for something, and she had no idea what. She had heard that there were various fighting tournaments that were so exclusive that the entrants had to participate in grueling tests of skill before they could even enter. These were not the kind of tournaments where someone who had cybernetic implants or had the ability to summon demons could enter. These were pure fighting tournaments, with only the natural abilities of a person could be utilized. Could this be the true goal of this unknown benefactor?

She spent a few days with her sister, wondering about these strange ideas and whether or not she would receive another mission from this person. She had other ways of finding jobs, of course, anyone without a proper guild had to have contacts that would allow them to freelance, but this had been a pretty convenient way to gain some experience and learn about local threats that she could beat the crap out of.

Thus it was a bit of a welcome surprise when she received another message on her iLac about a challenge. This time she would apparently be paired up with another person to stake out an inn that doubled as a hiding place for some group of people with ill intent. That's actually what the mission said, "ill intent". So she packed up her little rucksack which carried overnight items and only that she really needed to travel. She didn't really have any weapons, which made it easier to travel. She did have a few items on her form, including thin bracelets which could transform into pair of wicked looking gloves and a strange necklace that she hadn't been able to do anything with yet. It had been given to her as a graduation gift by her old teacher who had told her that it would protect her when she needed it. She supposed she hadn't needed it yet, but the fact that it was there was reassuring.

On this trip, also, she had acquired an interesting pair of shoes from her younger sister Makoto. Her sister had apparently built them herself, which was impressive especially as she wouldn't tell Kotomi exactly what they did.

A short trip took her to the designated meeting spot, where she saw a silver clad warrior heading towards the inn itself. Did she have intent to go in by herself? Kotomi didn't want to miss out on the action. She sped up towards the other warrior and said, "Hey you're not planning on starting without me, are you?" Although Kotomi herself didn't seem to notice it, she was completely dry in the rainstorm and even when she stepped in the puddles, her feet came out perfectly dry.

She extended a hand to greet her new teammate. "Kotomi, nice to meet you. Have you staked out the place yet?"

Post by Teresa Sinclair 24th October 2020, 10:00 am

Surprised Teresa turned around quickly, causing water to fly from her soaked hair, her free left hand instantly grabbing the hilt of her claymore. To her surprise there was a medium sized girl standing behind her. Well perhaps surprise was a bit of an overstatement, but she was weary of the girl until she introduced herself. Naturally Teresa had never met the girl, but the name Kotomi was vaguely familiar. She was certain she had read something about a fighter with at the very least a similar name. The notion was far too weak though to be useful. “Pleasure to meet you Kotomi. My name is Teresa Sinclair.” the silver eyed witch replied with a faint smile as she took Kotomi’s hand in her own and shook it.

The rain was still falling in buckets and Teresa shook her head to prevent droplets from running into her eyes and obscuring her sight. Realizing she was still holding the grip she released it and wiped of her forehead. “Well shall we get out of the rain?” She continued friendly, while pulling Kotomi along.

The door to the inn opened with a soft squishy sound as apparently the oak was very old and had sucked itself full of the rain as well. Luckily from inside a wave of warmth washed over them, followed by a myriad of smells. Teresa could smell a boar roasting, the fire roaring in the fireplace and the smell of alcohol. Which was strange, because there was nobody in the inn. As soon as Teresa stepped an eerie feeling came over her. “Ehhh yeah. Staked out and it is empty.” She said a bit nervous as she looked around.

All she could hear was silence though. Aside from the fire roaring and the droplets of water falling from her body suit. Suddenly she realized how cold and soaked she was, despite only having been in the rain for less then a minute. As she walked to the fireplace, she heard the board croak under her feet. It was odd though, despite the fire roaring, she could not feel any heat coming from it.

“Hmm do you need a place to change?” She asked as she snapped her fingers, requiping to a dry outfit in a moment. To her surprise though she suddenly noticed Kotomi was completely dry. That was odd in a way, but there were ways to achieve it. “Ah never mind.” She said with a grin as she grabbed her wet hair and bound it together in a tail using a turquoise hair band.

“Anyway let’s go over this. We are hired to kill a few changeling's, who are supposedly hiding in the basement. Correct?” She asked slowly, but friendly as she slowly kept moving towards the fire place.

Abruptly she stopped and diverted her direction to the bar where she drew two large wooden cups full of golden ale. “Here. Now what do you think about the mission? Any idea’s? I mean we could storm the cellar and try to take them by surprise.” She continued friendly as she placed a mug on the table, while taking a seat on the other side. Thirsty she drank half the mug in a single hit, before slamming it on the table. “Hmm not bad at all.” She said, trying to sound casually, as her left hand slipped under the table and rested on her hip, keeping the dagger she just requiped within distance. “So are you part of a guild?” She asked, while her eyes kept moving through the tavern, trying to spot something.

She was not exactly sure, but something seemed off in a way ever since they had entered.

Nodding in agreement, Kotomi headed inward. She wasn't soaked herself, but could see that her partner looked like a half-drowned rat after just a few precious moments. Following Teresa into the place, partially being lead there and partially of her own volition, Kotomi listened to the young woman as she explained about what she had seen so far.

"Yeah you'd think this place would have something in it…" She looked around curiously, taking in the place. It really did seem as though it was prepared for an evening of revelry and raucousness, or at least a regular evening of drinking in dour. Caught off guard by her new partner's kindness, she stopped looking around for a moment and smiled. She shook her head and motioned to the small bracelets on her wrists, "These things keep a low field of energy around me at all times which keeps things like water and snow off of me. It also keeps sweat or blood from collecting on me in the event of a serious fight."

She watched as Teresa swapped her wet clothes for dry ones and couldn't help but nod in appreciation. "Well, I don't have anything that cool," She said with an appreciative smile. However, everything she was saying and doing was laced with a layer of caution. Not that she didn't trust Teresa, after all this wouldn't be a great place for an assassination attempt, but because everything here was just a little off.

"That's the job," Kotomi agreed, keeping her voice low, "It seems a little straightforward but I would have thought that this place would either be abandoned or full of people like a normal bar. This does seem to be a weird in-between." And that's when it hit her. "Nevermind, I'm being too paranoid." She said hurriedly, as though covering for herself. Yet her actions and words were strikingly different.

As Teresa brought two drinks their way and proceeded to lift hers to her lips, Kotomi shot a hand out and covered the mouth of the mug with her palm. Rather than get a taste of a potentially dangerous beverage, Teresa would find her mouth meet Kotomi's bare hand. Kotomi held up a single finger in a 'Wait' gesture.

She pulled out her iLac and quickly typed with her free hand and showed the written message to Teresa, figuring this was a better way to communicate.

    Code:
[i]They probably have ears up here. Follow my lead.[/i]

Kotomi would never say that she was the smartest woman in the world but she had a knack for danger, since she seemed to fall into it whenever she had the opportunity. She took her drink and tossed it over her shoulder then slammed it down like Teresa had.

"Nah I'm not in a guild or anything. Actually this job came from an independent contractor who's been feeding me jobs for a pretty decent price." She started to look around carefully, "Well, nothing seems to be out of the ordinary, so let's just chow down and check the cellar out afterwards." She visibly bit at the inside of her lower lip to muffle a sound, and showed Teresa her hand. Whatever aura was covering her was slowly being eaten by the beverage that had touched Kotomi's hand as she prevented Teresa from drinking. Gesturing to the food and drink, she typed a single emoticon on her iLac. A skull and crossbones.

    Poison.

Post by Teresa Sinclair 26th October 2020, 6:13 am

Teresa looked a bit envious at the bracelets Kotomi was wearing. Not because they were particularly nice, but because they kept her dry. Now of course Teresa could have done the same with magic, but she had kept her kekkai up already too long and her magical reserves never would win any world records. For a moment she wondered if those bracelets could also protect the eyes. She always found it a serious pain in battle to get blinded by blood splattering in them. Maybe she could replicate the effect or use the technique behind them to create something similar. She could really use- This really is not the time! She had to remind herself, before this train of thought got away from her. “Oh that is amazing! You have got to tell me where you got those… once this is over.” She said, forcing herself to add the last bit and divert her gaze back from the armlets.

Of course Teresa had known something was wrong, but she had not expected poison. Of course she could not possibly understand why anyone would possibly poison something as divine as ale. “… ah right…” She said slowly while giving Kotomi a subtle nod, before putting the tankard down. Now was poison not really something that bothered her. Oh it would almost kill her and render her incapacitated, but so far none of the poisons she had tried ever managed to kill her.

Still Kotomi was right and they should be careful. There was something wrong and the more she thought about it, the less this made sense. For some reason she could not feel any heat coming from the fire place. In fact now that she thought about it, she could barely prevent herself from shivering. What was more she could practically sense magic everywhere, yet she could not see it.

Her attention was diverted though by Kotomi’s hand. Teresa’s eyes shot wide open and instinctively her left hand shot up from under the table, releasing the dagger in the process. Instinctively she placed her hand on Tokomi’s, squeezed it slightly to make sure the girl would not pull it back and then a benign light formed between the two hands.

As she was doing that though, the silver eyed witch was thinking. For a poison to be strong enough to eat through the human skin as fast as this, the acidity level must have been rather high. Ale would not be strong enough to cover that smell. Maybe the stronger beverages like cognac or whiskey could, but not ale. Yet despite that she could not detect anything wrong with the beverage. What was more, her healing was not helping at all. It was only a novice spell, but not to have any effect was weird.

“Oh that sounds nice. Not having a guild is pretty swell.” She suddenly said casually as she released Kotomi’s hand, giving her a quick thumps up as she retracted her hand and got up. “Food sounds good though, but it seems I forgot the condiments. I’ll be right back.” She said with a grin, trying to act casually as she grabbed Kotomi’s Ilac.

She was not really up to speed with these new devices, but luckily she knew enough to type in a few words. “Cool gadget, but I am not sure I would have gone with this model.” She said as she returned and placed the Ilac and condiment containers on the table.

    Code:
[i]They probably have ears up here. Follow my lead.

    GLAMOUR!?!? TRUE SIGHT SPELL?[/i]

Try as she might she somehow seemed to have locked caps lock and for the love of deities far and wide, she could not turn it off.

Still smiling she sat down and began to royally douse her food in pepper and salt, as she waited for Kotomi. The girl seemed to have detected it before her and Teresa hoped she had a way to deal with it. Otherwise she could try something, but she hated that technique and she never finished it. Still it might get the job done, even if it would destroy most of the inn and drain most of her magical powers.

The opossum is a curious little creature. Maxing out at a little over a hundred and fifty centimeters, weighing less than a seven kilos, they're not much of a threat as a predator species, and yet they have developed a somewhat unique way to defend themselves as prey. Many creatures would prefer live prey and therefore a rotting corpse of a meal would not do as a feast.

And the ingenious little opossum took advantage of that. In times of stress it will go into what is known as tonic immobility, more colloquially known as "playing possum". This actually appears in quite a few animals, but is most famous in this marsupial and therefore is so nicknamed.

Kotomi glanced at the response and shook her head. Keeping up the facade of the conversation, she said, "This one was actually a gift from a friend. It's a little high tech for my case and definitely wastes a lot of energy." She put a lot of emphasis on those choice words to convey a hidden meaning, "You know I probably wouldn't have chosen this color, which is why I got the pink case. If they sell something pink, it's always feminized you know? Gender stereotypes suck. I just like pink."

"Anyway, if we've got free time, what I wanted to show you was this little app," She pulled up a picture of an opossum playing dead, which would hopefully convey the intended plan. Tapping on the iLac again she wrote out,

    Code:
They probably have ears up here. Follow my lead.

    GLAMOUR!?!? TRUE SIGHT SPELL?

Fall after I do. Be ready to fight.

Then said, "It's just one of those little tapping games but I think it's cute. I-" She paused and coughed. From the sound of it, it sounded real, but Teresa would be able to see that she was just forcing the sound out. "What the fuc-" She would never win any awards, but it would hopefully be enough to convince the predators that she had fallen. If Teresa trusted her enough to do the same, it would sell the entire plan. The best way to spring a trap like this, she figured, was to fall right into it.

She dropped backwards out of the chair and fell to the ground, unmoving. Ideally, the doppelgängers preferred to take out immobilized or even dead prey, and thus they would attempt to recover the fallen pair. That would be when the duo showed the difference between themselves and opossums.

Post by Teresa Sinclair 27th October 2020, 8:52 am

The great thing about sneaky plans is to actually let the person you are with in on them. Perhaps having worked the word possum into something would have been great. Luckily Teresa did catch onto some of the clues Kotomi was giving off and it seemed like the girl had a plan. If she were to guess she should pretend to have digested some of the poison and play dead. Not a bad plan actually. Teresa thought to herself as she nodded to Kotomi before pretending to finish the rest of her ale. “Heh don’t I know it. Pink is just a pretty color, nothing sexy about it.” She said, nodding in agreement to her new partner.

Sure part of her was sad Kotomi had a plan. It had been ages since she had practiced the expanding shield bubble. With enough strength she would have forced a spherical ball around them and force it to grow, dispelling the glamour as well. Sadly it did not care for earthly materials, so everything in the path of the expanding bubble would have been pushed aside and they would be left sitting in a hole in the middle of the tavern. Oh right… that is why I hardly use it. She thought to herself as she made a gurgling sound and placed her hands around her neck.

She wriggled a finger between her neck and her body suit, trying to loosen it to allow her to get more air. Holding her breath at the same time caused her skin to go a bit pink, before slowly turning red and finally she closed her eyes and let her head fall backwards, relaxing her entire body.

Ohhhhh she meant possum! I bet that animal was a possum. Clever girl! She suddenly thought to herself, giving herself an inner face palm for her slowness. Just at that moment she felt her arm fall like a lump in her lap, her left hand sliding between her legs.

Perhaps she should have noticed it sooner, but Teresa was not really familiar with normal animals in general. She could give countless lectures on all kinds of dangerous creatures. From the fire breathing cockachu, to goblins and dragons, she had acquired quite a bit of knowledge. Normal animals though… she was happy she could identify a cat and a dog.

Now the waiting game would start though, something she was quite good at if she was honest. The problem was though that she had her eyes closed, which normally led to a pavlov reaction of sleep. So she cracked her left eye a tiny bit open, so she could look into the tavern through her eyelashes. The chance of a yawn, followed by loud snoring grew ever larger though with every minute and she was almost at the limit of her self control, when suddenly she saw something.

At first she did not understand what was happening, but slowly she understood. The magic illusion was slowly fading and it was as if the color was drained from the tavern. Literally. The fire place was suddenly only a smoldering heap of ashes, the candles were almost all burned out and she could see… or rather smell, death.

She was tempted to tilt her head to see where it was coming from, but she restrained herself. Kotomi’s trick was working and she did not want to undo their effort. Just at that moment a trap door in the back of the tavern seemed to open an an unpleasant smell began to spread. Definitely doppelgangers! She thought to herself, recognizing their pungent odor instantly. Teresa could hear them slowly moving towards the two mages, softly mumbling to each other in a language she did not undersand. She could see at least one of them, yet the other two eluded her.

For all she knew they could be already on top of them, but she figured Kotomi had a plan. Or was at least watching her back, as she was watching hers. Just in case though, she gathered a tiny bit of energy in the tips of the fingers on her left hand. The glow was tiny bit of glow was obscured by her thick thighs and now at least she could cast a shield in case of emergency. Still, I wish you would act soon. I am getting a nasty cramp in my neck. She thought, biting on her lip to ignore the pain. [color]Comon… any time now![/color]

Kotomi heard the echoing thud that signaled that Teresa had caught at least enough of her plan to play along. She remained still with her eyes closed and, unlike her blonde counterpart, she couldn't see the area around them.

She could, however, feel the vicinity around her. Kotomi was not skilled in magic perception the way other mages were, but her aura could extend like a pulse around to get a sense of other things that she would normally be able to pick up on. The nigh imperceptible flash of energy worked almost like echolocation to tell her when her enemies were drawing near. She wanted to catch them at the right moment for both her and her ally.

She waited, it would seem almost too long but the patience paid off when as one of the doppelgängers reached down to grab her, she caught it by the arm and snapped her eyes open, pulling the creature down to the ground. As she did, she pulled her legs up and shot them forward with just the force of her abs and wrapped them around the creature even as he was falling. Crossing her legs over his arm so that her thighs held his elbow firmly, she twisted her body around as he fell, using his momentum to push herself up. Normally this would be used for forcing an opponent to tap into submission, but with her quick attack and follow through, she simply snapped the creature's arm like a twig, letting him go and getting to her feet at the same time.

Even as she dusted herself off, she assumed her ally was getting to her feet as well. They'd successfully drawn their predators out and turned them into prey, and were now on even ground, she realized that although she knew a bit about doppelgängers, she didn't know if these specific ones had any skills or abilities that she didn't know about.

Sure enough, there was a sickening crunch as the one that she had felled stood up rather slowly, with its arm snapping back into place. She winced at the sound, but wasn't exactly surprised by the action. "Alright," She said, "You're tougher than I thought." The surprises multiplied when the creature transformed right before her eyes, becoming a mirror image of her.

This made her narrow her eyes, "You better hope that didn't come with my powers." She swung a hard haymaker at the doppelgänger, which she internally dubbed Kopymi, while the double dropped into a low duck, swinging out a kick and taking Kotomi's legs out from under her. She fell backwards hard but caught herself in a backflip and swung back into action.

As Kopymi got to her feet and attacked Kotomi again, the known underdog shifted her footing to get on the defensive. Her opponent was copying moves that she knew, but wasn't working on muscle memory like she was. It was like fighting against her shadow, just a little slower than the real object. Still, Kopymi brought her own style into the battle and unexpectedly smashed Kotomi in the nose with a back-knuckle punch.

This hit hard enough to send Kotomi stumbling back and out of the melee, shattering the imperceptible shield that covered her body and causing her to stop in a stunned stance for a moment. Of course, the Kopymi took full advantage and summoned a barrage of force magic which smashed into Kotomi's stunned form one after another like a shotgun blast of energy.

The young woman was sent stumbling back again and this time didn't catch herself, instead smashing one of the rotting tables as it broke her fall.

"Yeah," She said, as she lay there. "Okay. That definitely happened." Figuring that Teresa would try to come to her aid, she held up a hand and said, "Definite dibs on this one."

Slowly standing up, she smashed her knuckles together and the resulting sound echoed throughout the room. The bracelets on her wrists shattered, revealing a pair of wicked gauntlets covering her forearms. Her physical aura flared into existence, glowing with a reddish flame, as though she had ignited in fury. "Round two, champ."

She moved with incredible speed now, striking Kopymi three times in rapid succession with side chops, which then led into a hard kick to the sternum. She then grabbed the opponent and pulled her into a hard headbutt, which seemed to hurt Kotomi not one bit. The tables seemed to have turned more than a little bit, with Kotomi's increase in power changing the look of the fight as well as the feeling of power in Kotomi's eyes. Her opponent, powerful in the beginning, seemed to be relying on Kotomi's strength in her form. Unfortunately for the doppelgänger, most of Kotomi's power lie within her, with her impressive physical strength being merely the surface. To put it simply, the creature had made a mistake in assuming Kotomi would be as strong as herself.

With Kopymi reeling from the strikes, Kotomi continued her onslaught with severe prejudice. Her punches and kicks flew relentlessly, pressing the doppelgänger back into the wall, at which point Kopymi lost her ability to remain in the mimicked form and returned to the slender, deathlike figure.

"Good," Kotomi said, "I would hate to have to kill myself." Pulling her fist back, she delivered a brutal punch into the creature, the flame from her fist mixing with the wicked spikes in the fist and allowing her to punch through the mimic. As the creature gasped in pain, it was clear that it wasn't going to be able to heal from this type of attack. Checking for a moment to make sure that it was dead, she reached down and grabbed a piece of its clothing, ripping it off with a satisfying sound and used its humble garb to clean off her gauntlet, the other one having reverted to its bracelet form.

Meanwhile, trusting of Teresa though she had become in just their short time together (after all, someone had paired them up for a reason), she turned about to see where the warrioress was and if she needed any kind of help.

Doppelganger Cult Empty Re: Doppelganger Cult

Post by Teresa Sinclair 30th October 2020, 8:49 am

From the corners of her eyes Teresa watched how Kotomi started the fight and recognized the doppelgangers for what they were. If they were any good -even for monsters, a certain amount of talent is required- they would be able to copy her ability and magic. Though probably not as well as she herself could, muscle memory and training were quite important after all, against the two of them she would still have a disadvantage if she were to draw her sword. Luckily she did have some experience fighting these creatures and with a bit of luck she could trick them.

She was not even a bit surprised when the other two doppelgangers focused on her and took her form. She had fought the buggers quite a few times in the past and they were not that much of a threat. However she was not in peak condition and the magic or aether in the air had been severely depleted by the glamour spell in the air.

Even if the silver eyed witch extended her senses to the maximum, she could barely find any pockets with a lot of magic and the air was thick with soot. ~air completely drained of magic~ The magic she was intending to use and therefore the magic the doppelganger would use, was the one she had already prepared before. “Kekkai” She bellowed as she ‘woke’ up and her left hand shot in the air, two fingers pointing at her opponents and drawing a sigil in the air.

Instantly a shield shot from her hands and she pushed it forward, aiming to slam it into the two doppelgangers. The fact that they quickly mimicked her and shot two similar shield into her, was calculated. With a shattering crash the shields collided and exploded into pieces like a giant mirror, before dissolving into thin air.

The force of the splosion was enough to push her backwards, her feet sliding through the debris, into the wall. Teresa let out a small ‘tschk’ sound as her back hit the wooden wall. Placing her right food against it, she pushed up and drew in as much energy as she could, diverted it into both hands and began to weave more sigils, firing a series of smaller shields towards the creatures. She almost hit the second, but it ducked aside just at the last moment, while the first took advantage and fired a shield into her side.

The shield lacked strength though and Teresa was already reading their movements. She could recognize the sigils they were drawing and slowly began to predict how they were moving.

Meanwhile though she noticed Kotomi was beginning to push her foe back and Teresa hated to lose. “Ryuo” She said as she released two small rectangular shield and began to control them to move the two doppelgangers back together.

“Ok, let’s see if you really have all my strength.” She said a bit out of breath. Clouds of fog were forming in rapid intervals and beads of sweat began to form.

With both of them together though, Teresa extended her right palm and drew all the energy she had into a single massive shield. It was crude, but thick and wide enough to crush both foes if it could connect. As she hoped though the two looked at each other and copied her again, firing two massive shields towards her. Albeit both were smaller then hers, these two melted together half way through and the singular product was quite an impressive shield. Even for Teresa’s standard, the pulsating silver shield looked impressive. “G-gotcha!” Teresa said with a grin, as she placed her free hand on her right wrist and poured as much of her power into her own shield as she could.

With a loud crash the shields collided and opaque silver sparks were shooting through the air. A vein popped up on Teresa’s arm as she drew in as much energy as she could and poured it into her own shield. Her eyes lit up bright yellow and a yellow aura formed around her as she let out a deep growling noise.

The shields were bashing together with a sound similar to glass when it is vibrating quickly and the floor beneath the two was slowly being torn apart. Just at that moment Teresa’s eyes began to tremble slightly as she felt her control slipping. Despite her best effort her shield was slowly being pushed back, just as her feet were sliding over the floor.

She tried to push her metal boots deeper into the wooden boards, hoping to get a better grip and she extended her second arm fully to support the shield. It was useless though. Her own magic was running out and there was barely a drop left in the air surrounding the tavern.

Teresa let out a small groan as she slid further backwards and her right heel touched the back of the tavern again. Seriously? This is the second time I am pushed back. Not cool! She thought to herself as slowly her body was pushed back as well until her back and even the back of her head was touching the wooden boards. She could almost touch the two shields with her bare hands and at this rate she would either be pushed through the tavern or killed.

Of course the doppelgangers did not have her experience. The shield push trick was cool and all, but without a solid wall it was useless and as annoying the wood was, she could already her it croaking, ready to break under more pressure. The trick was to form a secondary shield behind your opponent and make a sandwich.

In this case though she had not bothered as thing were going exactly as planned.

Just as the two shields had reached her a crack appeared in their shield and then another. “Oh nice job, Kotomi.” Teresa said rather out of breath as she gave her shield one final push and suddenly both shields cracked and began to fade away.

“H-eh-eh… I g-guess you are also out of m-magic.” Teresa said with a grin as she watched the two versions of her trying to wave signals, only for nothing to happen. Well a few outlines appeared, but the buzzed out like a dying light bulb. “That’s what you get for copying me… you also get my flaws.” She said with a grin as she jumped straight towards the two versions of her.

For a moment the two only watched her, waiting for what would happen. What they did not seem to comprehend was that Teresa was a far more skilled with the sword then with magic. In a flash she had drawn her claymore and swung it single handedly. Two handed was stronger, but also slower to execute and she hoped to catch the two off guard.

A moment later the first version of herself split vertically in two in a delightful rain of red, before turning back into the death like figure it was before. “Tskk, seems I was too slow…” She said slightly annoyed as she looked at the second her, who was now missing her left arm but otherwise fine. Otherwise being of course a relative term, as the doppelganger was probably not considering itself to be fine. For a being that however was supposed to have been cut into 4 pieces, missing an arm was relatively fine. At least in Teresa’s eyes. Ofcourse now the other Teresa drew her sword as well.

“I got this one.” She said a bit out of breath as she looked straight at the doppelganger. She had one final trick up her sleeve.

“You made the assumption that I was a good mage and therefor copied my abilities.” She said as she was trying to distract the doppelganger, hoping to buy a bit of time. “Sadly for you I have extremely little magic of my own. I supplement it by drawing magic out of the air and mixing it. Your ability allowed you to do the same. Mixing the bit of own magic with the magic from the air. Like sand and water make cement, this way you can create pretty powerful magic.” She said as she was draining every bit of magic she had stored away and could scrape up at the edge of her abilities. The edges of her sword were slowly beginning to turn black and glisten dangerously. “However what happens if all the magic in the air is used up and all that is left is soot? Well then you get what just happened… you run out of magic and you are left to defend against a two handed claymore with only a single arm.” She said as she gritted her teeth and pushed out the absolute final remains of her power. A small yellow aura flickered around her and her eyes turned yellowish.

“Ryuo Busoshoku!” She said with a firm, albeit panting voice, as she drew her claymore over her head, holding it with two hands. Upon speaking the words the black lines spread like ink over the entire sword. Without wasting any time she simply swung the sword down with all the strength she had. Instinctively the doppelganger tried to block it with an overhead stance, dropping down to one knee to provide extra support. Even without the black shield around Teresa’s claymore it was an uneven match. People tended to underestimate how much more powerful a two handed slash was compared to a single handed one.

With it though, the black claymore cut through the mimics sword as if it was butter and spliced the creature clean in half a moment later. The black shield was a most basic technique, enhancing the cutting power of the blade, while making it a lot more sturdy. However it still required magic she barely had left.

“U-gh I need to practice more.” Teresa said suddenly dead tired as she watched the creature fall in two pieces onto the ground. To prevent her from falling forward, she stabbed the sword into the wooden floor and rested on it.

She was an old lady after all and nobody should begrudge her the use of a cane. “By the way, you are pretty awesome Kotomi!” She said as she tried to catch her breath and drops of sweat were gathering in her brow. “Could you give a few moments to catch my breath and then we can finish this?” She asked as she plucked a cigarette from her pocket, her fingers shaking as she lit the black cigarette.

    ————————

A few hours later everything was wrapped up. After they had made sure that on the top level there were no monsters left, they had completed their sweep of the dungeon. Aside from the tavern owner and several heaps of dead bodies, they had found nothing. They had then informed the police who had made the contract and soon they had arrived in force.

By the time they were done with their statements and had received their rewards, the police had identified most of the thirty six bodies and people were already clearing up the mess. Apparently the owner of the tavern was a business man above all else and told the police that a new barkeeper and staff would arrive by the end of the week. It was after all a valuable resting place for weary travelers and the only one in a day’s march, so the police was busy expediting everything as well.

“Well Kotomi, thank you for your help. I could not have done it without you.” Teresa said friendly as she extended her hand to the girl. Deep down she wished that was not merely a formality, but it was the truth. “Anyway I have entered my contact data in your iLac. If you ever need help with a job or need to contact me for another reason, now you can.” Teresa said with a friendly smile.

With that she turned around and walked away, raising her hand and waving till she was making the right turn that would lead her home. Kotomi… heh what an interesting little girl. She thought to herself as she reached for her flask and took a huge sip of the strong spirit that was in it.

    She deservedit after today!
