Ivan brought down the axe in his hand, the weight of the axe head came crashing down splitting the log in one fell swoop. He wiped the sweat from his brow and placed another log on the stump to repeat the process. Ivan then used the wood he had split and began to sand them down and prepare the cut wood for assembly. Piece by piece the parts came together to assemble a bunk bed, the size of the beds were a comfortable, large enough to be serviceable for growing children. Ivan continued to assemble the bunks for the orphans with undeterred diligence. At first Ivan found it uncomfortable when the children would enter his work space and watch him put together their beds. He was worried the children would end up playing with the power tools and injure themselves, however, after a good proper civil conversation the children listened to Ivan and behaved properly. There were indeed a few energetic kids, but after a few close calls Ivan was able to get them to behave.
It soon became a common occurrence where the children would run around and play at the outskirts of Ivan’s makeshift workshop. Despite all of this, Ivan could not shake off his anxiety around the children, he always felt that he would end up injuring them by accident. Thus, he always made sure to keep himself at least arms length away from the kids. In a matter of a few days Ivan had assembled enough bunks to give each child a bed to sleep in when the nightfall came. With a few connections he had made on the island, he managed to gain the help of the locals to gather enough beddings for each bunk.
One evening as Ivan was sitting, enjoying a cup of coffee a small child approached Ivan. He turned to the child and did his best to give a warm smile. Ivan set his cup down before speaking. “Hey… you good champ? Why aren’t you with the other kids?” Ivan asked the little boy. The kid did his very best hold back the tears welling up on his eyes. Ivan looked around in hopes of someone to come to the rescue, when no one showed Ivan let out a sigh and awkwardly reached out and did his best pat the boy on the back gently.
“I-I wanna go home…” The child cried. Ivan looked at the child with compassion. He took out a small windup brass robot, he turned the key multiple times before allowing the brass toy robot to march in circles before the child. The kid looked up form his teary eyes in wonder as if momentarily forgetting about his sorrow.
“If you like it, you can have it.” Ivan chuckled as he watched the toy robot march around. The kid wiped his eyes and looked at Ivan, a small smile forming on his lips.
“Really?” The kid asked, Ivan smiled back and ruffled the kids head and nodded in approval.
“Sure kiddo, it’s all yours. ‘Sides I can always make another one.” Ivan chuckled he picked up the toy robot and placed it in the kids hands. “You made this yourself?” The Child asked in wonder. Ivan nodded as he picked up a tool box and showed it to the kid. “It’s a wonder what you can do with a bit of elbow grease and some imagination.” Ivan grinned as he opened the tool box revealing the contents inside. Inside the metal tool box were an assortment of tool and in one of the tool box divers was a small pile of un finished wind up toys he was assembling as a hobby. “Whooooaah…” The kid said as he peered into the tool box. “My dad was good at fixing and making things too, you know?…. My names is Timmy… w-whats your name?” The kids said softly as he used his small hands to turn the robot around.
“Oh… my name is Ivan…It’s nice to meet you Timmy” Ivan smiled before he took another sip from his cup of coffee. He got up and took out a small tin cup and filled it with hot water, some cream and chocolate powder. He mixed the contents thus creating a cup of hot chocolate for the Child. He took to warm cup and handed it to the boy. “Careful champ… its hot…” the Child gratefully took the drink and thank Ivan for his kindness.
“Are you going to be stay here at the orphanage Ivan?” Timmy asked before taking a sip from his warm and sweet beverage.
“I will be around for a bit… I’ll be helping Ms. Aliannah until we can get this place ready for the big new family she’s got….” Ivan chuckled as he indicated that the child was part of this big new family he was talking about.
“Oh does that mean you’ll be leaving?” Timmy inquired in a sad tone. Ivan’s lips pursed and he let out a sigh through his nostrils.
“Yeah… I’m afraid eventually I’ll have to go…. But until then we can hang out like this…” Ivan smiled as he gave the kid a thumbs up. Timmys face lit up with a hopeful expression. “Really?” Timmy said sheepishly.
“Yes sir, you have my word…” Ivan smiled softly “Alrighty Timmy…it’s getting late we should be heading back.” Ivan checked his pocket watch.
“O-okay can I finish the hot chocolate first?” Timmy asked, Ivan nodded before replying to the child.
“Sure. I’ll just tidy up the place, just let me know when you’re all done.” Ivan gave the child a thumbs up before getting up to put away whatever tools he hadn’t put away yet. After picking up trash and debris, and organizing his makeshift work shop Ivan was able tidy up everything in a bout half an hour or so. By the time Ivan was done he found Timmy asleep next to an empty cup and a hot chocolate mustache on his face. Ivan chuckled softly to himself before wiping the kids face and gently picking him up to carry him back to the orphanage.
