Well, that was one task out of the way. The second necessity she had to get was an iLac. Her previous one had been lost in the heavy drifts somewhere on Mt. Hakobe. That stupid wind spirit had knocked it out of her hands and in the blink of an eye it was gone. Luckily, she’d backed up all her photos before leaving the school. It wouldn’t be too hard to get all her stuff back.

Gwen hopped on the train at Rose Garden, claiming a cabin just to herself for the ride. It would take a couple hours to reach Neutral Grounds, but she didn’t mind. Pulling a book from her bag, she spent the time in a fantasy world full of dragons and magic, peppered with the occasional glance out the window at the landscape that passed by. She had to switch trains twice, but she didn’t mind.

When the train entered the boundaries of Neutral Grounds, Gwen felt as if the air was knocked right from her lungs. What the heck? Trying not to panic, she took some deep breaths. She was still inhaling, but it was different than it had been minutes ago. It was like she had moved from the outdoors into a tiny closet without much air flow.

The young woman knew about the anti-magical effects of Neutral Grounds. It had been one of the most important pieces of information about the city that her teachers had taught in school. However, as far as she knew, Gwen didn’t possess magic. Neither of her parents, nor either set of grandparents had either. Her paternal grandma and grandpa had been immigrants from Pergrande, so there was no way they had magic.

Pondering what the cause could be and making sure to take as deep of breaths as she could, Gwen exited the train shortly after it came to a stop in the station. She’d checked a map beforehand, so she knew which way the iLac factory was. Making her way there, she tried not to walk too fast for fear of losing her breath completely.

When she arrived, there was a massive sign above the sliding doors that lead into the factory. Free iLacs! was what it said, and Gwen’s eyebrows rose. She’d had a bunch of bad luck lately, so maybe this was a sign that it was turning for the better! The doors parted as she entered, a smile on her face.

“Are the iLacs really free today?” she piped up, catching the attention of the receptionist. “Yes, this week only! We want people to try out some of the new tech we implemented.”

“Yay! That’s so exciting!” Gwen chirped, clapping her hands together. “Do I get to pick which color I get?” Her expression turned hopeful.

“Yes! That option was today only, so you came in at the right time!” The receptionist seemed to have caught Gwen’s cheerfulness, smiling with kind eyes at the young woman.

“Sweet! I’d like the rose gold one, please!”

Minutes later, she skipped from the store, iLac in hand and wheezing profusely as she had forgotten about the anti-magic’s effects.
