Out of Space and Time

 
It was difficult to determine what was and wasn't weird in Fiore. There were so many races of people, human and other, that it ended up becoming sort of a melting pot of culture. The clothes people wore, or the lack thereof, were hardly anything of notable strangeness. Maybe how some people talked could be a little weirder. But it was usually people's behavior that threw others offguard, and today wasn't any different.

Doppo was sitting on the bench, eating some sort of snack. He was in the reception area of headquarters, which was really the only place the public could directly come in and make reports, talk to Rune Knights, and what have you, and it wasn't unusual for people who wanted to enlist into the Rune Knights to come in this way and ask to join. In fact, it was probably the most common way of joining, and each was memorable in their own way. Even this one.

A woman of average height and blonde hair walked in with a sense of purpose and announced her request to join. As mentioned before, this wasn't anything special. But the clothes she wore caught your attention, to say the least, and she finished her greeting with a standard, but surprisingly well done, salute. That sort of formality and gesture of respect wasn't really expected or necessary among civilians, so it may have come off as odd to the others Knights looking at her. But for Doppo, who was also watching, this seemed to go completely over his head, as so many things often did.

Chiyuki Suzuki—or Doppo, was the Major General of the Combat Corps. He was often the shortest man in a room of colleagues, despite his height being average, and he was the last person you would think would be responsible for helping lead such a strong branch of the Rune Knights. He was lanky, had a horrible posture, was soft-spoken (and seldom spoke at all), didn't understand social cues, always seemed tired and fatigued, and was somewhat skinny. His bright red hair was perpetually messy, and there were always bags underneath his baby blue eyes. He was the farthest thing from what one might've thought an officer should look like, and yet since everyone knew he was in the room, everyone had silently waited for him to address the woman himself. And he would, although he didn't get why everyone seemed so awestricken by her appearance or what she just did.

"Hey..." Doppo walked up next to her, tapping her shoulder. He was only a little taller than her, and seemed to have far less muscle as well. He was quiet and unemotional in both his voice and expression. "I'm Major General Suzuki... you said you wanted to join the Rune Knights...? Did I hear that right...?"

"Expectations...?" Doppo stared at her briefly, and with one big breath, lethargically and slowly sighed, "I can't directly recruit you in, but I can help you with your registration... come to my office..."

Doppo used to be lazy, but then he assumed the position he currently had. Well, even before then, the moment he joined the ranks of the Rune Knights, his work ethic at the time was simply not gonna cut it. One way or another, he shook off his lazy habits and worked hard to keep Fiore in a state of peace. He became eager to help his colleagues where he could, whether that be as a mentor or an officer, and he was determined to squash out crime where it happened. Even so, old habits died hard, and never really looked forward to this tedious and mouthy process.

He led them back towards the section of headquarters were men and women of the Combat Corps frequented, shuffling into his shared office and carefully plopping down into his seat worn with his weight. There were various out-of-place things on his desk, like stress balls he that showed excessive use, assorted pens, and women's fertility tea. There was a stack of folders and documents on either side of his desk that surpassed his head while he was seated, and it overall seemed like organized chaos. With the quick pull of his drawer, he pulled out a copy of the common registration forms for the Rune Knights and slid it over to his new acquaintance. It had the basic fields on it: name, sex, address, desired Corps, etc. You know, the usual.

"The expectations are simple, by the way... when you enlist here, you represent something greater than yourself, and you need to act like you do... uhm... be obedient... loyal... and some other stuff... but you'll probably cover that in training..." Doppo slid back into his chair, baby blues staring at the ceiling in thought.
