“Oh yes, this is going to be awful...”

Mercury was cackling madly to herself, beyond pleased with what she was currently working on. She had really only learned about Christmas a few days ago upon the receipt of an invitation from the du Wolffs to join their family for the holiday with another big ball, and of course Mercury had immediately accepted. Not that she knew what Christmas was, but all that took was a little bit of research and asking Vandrad what it was all about. Soon enough, they once again found themselves hanging out with Serilda and Mythal at a nationwide celebration of the holiday, and Mercury was quite enjoying herself.

Already more than used to the cold of the Phoenix Mountains, the Xocili was clad in a rather casual outfit that was warmer than what she typically wore but was probably still a bit lighter than most people would prefer in the snow and ice. A worn pair of black denim jeans covered her legs, and she wore a black pair of snow boots to keep her feet dry and warm. Over a grey tank top was a blue plaid long sleeve shirt with the sleeves rolled up to her elbows, with an owl shaped pendant hanging from a chain around her neck. She was sitting at a craft table, surrounded by fabric, glitter, tinsel, bells, and all sorts of holiday related paraphernalia. Immediately before her was a sweater that was exactly as atrocious as she’d been hoping to make it. Which was, of course, the point of the ugly sweater building activity.

It was primarily green with red stripes along the sleeves, collar, and bottom hem, as well as red squiggles across the chest. She had sewn a length of green yarn haphazardly around the bodice, to which she had fixed several small lacribulbs in various colors that flickered and glowed to make it look like a string of lights. On the front of the sweater she had somehow managed to attack a small stuffed ape wearing a santa hat. The item had tickled her when she saw it due to it’s angry expression and red eyes. It looked as grumpy as Vandrad ever did, so clearly it was meant to go on this sweater, given Mercury’s intentions for it.

She held the finished item up in front of her with a wide, self satisfied grin. “So, on a scale of one to he’s going to drown me in the nearest frozen lake, how mad do you think he’s gonna be when I force him to wear this?” Mercury turned the garment to show it to her current companion, Mythal.

Christmas hadn’t really meant much to Mythal for a long time. It really wasn’t until he had joined Fairy Tail that he even remembered that it was a thing. But after spending the holiday with Serilda and her family, he had gained a new appreciation for the celebration, if only because it reminded him of the pleasant times that Serilda and he had enjoyed. He still wasn’t the most social of veins so the idea of going out and taking part in a festival was definitely along the lines of ‘meh’. But it gave him and Seri the chance to spend more time with Mercury and Vandrad in a capacity that wasn’t life-threatening or world endangering. Things had been quiet ever since their little adventure in the Haunted Lands and frankly, Mythal would take a Christmas event over more of that. So the group had met up at Rose Garden, a hub of activity, culture and tourism that Mythal had visited more than a few times.

The entirety of the city had been decorated with Christmas; lights, trees, ornaments and music were present wherever one would look. There were even people dressed up as elves and Christmas spirits, roaming around and entertaining the people that were visiting. There were also several different stands up for activities, ranging from genuine to hilarious. One of the more entertaining was a place where people could design ugly sweaters. Apparently that was a trend that came around Christmas time, though Mythal knew very little about that. Whatever the case, somehow he wound up being paired with Mercury so that they could design sweaters for their partners.

But what was ugly? Mythal had his own sense of ugly and as he glanced around at other people’s projects, apparently his was rather mundane. Several people were going crazy over their sweaters, attaching all sorts of baubles and substance to make them look downright horrifying. The Darkness King had simply made the face of a snowman, complete with carrot nose, that was frowning and looked a bit perturbed. Staring at the article, he glanced over at all the canisters, shakers and trays he had with things to add. He sort of shrugged and grabbed a few things, attaching them without really thinking about it and making the snowman look like someone had slammed his face into an arts and crafts store and dragged it around a bit.

He glanced up as Mercury spoke up, the Silver Wolf mage off in her little world. Mythal had looked over a few times when she had been laughing madly or remarking on one thing or another. But now she was asking for his attention and as he looked in her direction, he was met with a truly horrendous sweater. It was all sorts of festive and creepy in ways that didn’t mix and it was obvious she knew that. He looked between the sweater and her a few times before he spoke up. “Listen, we have a protected witness program. You go in, we change your name, he’ll never find you. Because if he does, he’s gonna drown you in several different lakes,” he said, smiling and laughing. No doubt Vandrad was going to loathe the garment… even if he probably was expecting it.

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
It took everything in Serilda’s power to keep her face schooled. She wasn’t entirely sure how she and Vandrad had gotten separate from Mythal and Mercury, but here the two nobles were, each with a gift in hand at one of the competition booths, trying to guess what was inside. Serilda had made it a point to temporarily cut out her Void senses while participating, as she would have easily been able to beat the game and that would have been cheating. However, she was sorely tempted to turn her senses back on and cheat just to finish and be done with it, because whatever she currently held in her hands smelled utterly atrocious.

As Serilda turned the box in her hands, trying to get a feel for the item’s weight and size, a waft of the putrid smell brushed her sensitive nose, causing her to gag involuntarily. She quickly covered her mouth with her hand, fighting back the taste of bile in the back of her throat. “Gods, this is absolutely rancid,” the field marshal told her future brother in law, horrified by the situation but also clearly able to see the amusement in it if the resigned smile on her face was any indication. “Even if I guess it correctly, I don’t think I want to keep what’s inside.” The smell was so overpowering that it was practically drowning out the rest of her senses.

But, she was here now and already committed to the game. It wouldn’t do to back out of it at this point, particularly when she was pretty sure the smell was going to be lingering on her for the rest of the night already. Whatever was inside felt soft, and couldn’t have been much bigger than a loaf of bread. It had some weight to it, but nothing heavy enough to be distinguishable. The shape of the box, at least, was roughly rectangular. It didn’t make any noise when shaken, or at least nothing distinctive. At this point, she wasn’t even sure if the smell was related to what was inside or if the box had just been magicked to reek. It wouldn’t have surprised her. A quick glance around at some of the other contestants was more than enough to confirm that many of the boxes did have some kind of enchantment on them that affected the holder.

Finally, she looked to one of the people running the event. “Okay, I think my official guess is going to be a stuffed animal of some kind.”

“A stuffed animal, eh? Alright then, open it up and let’s see if you’re right!”

Not entirely thrilled about doing so, she peeled off the wrapping paper and removed the lid from the box. What was inside was equally as horrifying as the smell had been, and confirmed that the box had not, in fact, been enchanted. Serilda gagged lightly a second time. “Is… is that… meatloaf?” It was some kind of food that was absolutely covered in mold, and it was only a lifetime of disciplined composure that kept her from holding it away from her at arm’s length.

Even the game runner looked disgusted. “Wow, that is nasty. That had to be left over from last year’s contest. I’d give you my condolences on not guessing correctly but… on the plus side I don’t think you’d want to keep this anyway, so as far as I’m concerned you still won even if you lost. Here let me just… go dispose of that for you, my lady. Better luck next time!” He took the box and promptly dumped it in the nearest trash can.

This felt more like a child’s game than anything else.

In fact, the whole notion of Christmas was a bit too immature for Vandrad. Of course he was used to it at this point; everywhere his family made it a point to host a grand gala and celebrate the winter holiday in majestic style. They were doing it again this year, having gone ahead and invited Mercury, Mythal and Serilda, along with her family. Even as a child, or at least as far back as he could remember, the idea of Christmas seemed silly and outrageous. And yet here he was, participating in one of the ridiculous events that they had set up for the festival. It wasn’t that he wasn’t enjoying spending time with Serilda and Mythal -- if anything, he felt closer to them after everything that had transpired. But he would have taken a normal night of dining and chatting over this charade.

Mercury and Mythal had found themselves over at another booth that was apparently designing ugly sweaters. Another ridiculous tradition that came with the holiday. He was surprised that Mercury even knew about Christmas at all but, given the look that quite literally lit up on her face when she saw the booth, he had a feeling he was going to be the victim of whatever atrocity she came up with. At this point, he had just accepted that she would attempt to find every single way to make him feel embarrassed and rather than fight against it, he chose to let it go. That didn’t keep him from remarking whenever she pulled something on him but he didn’t push back nearly as much as he used to. Serilda and Vandrad had found themselves over by an area filled with presents. Apparently it was some kind of guessing game. The Field Marshal grabbed one and, deciding to participate for the sake of familial bonding, the prince took a different one.

Serilda spoke up about how the present reeked of something horrible, admitting that she didn’t want to hazard a guess for fear of what awaited her under the lid. Vandrad snorted, inhaling the scent that perturbed her nose and sneered. "Whatever it is, it has fouled. I’d suggest gloves in case it is some kind of reindeer droppings.” That seemed quite the prank to pull on someone. For his own present, he turned it over a few times and gave it a few soft shakes, listening in. There wasn’t much noise to it but it was surprisingly heavy. He could also feel like something was moving with it… a liquid perhaps?

Serilda opted to guess first, deciding on a stuffed animal. That was… well, it was a bit outrageous of a guess, considering the smell that leaked out from the present itself. Then again, it seemed by the look of things that the presents had been enchanted to deceive the holder, making the game that much more complicated. As if figuring out what was inside a sealed box wasn’t hard enough. Vandrad rolled his eyes as the attendant asked Serilda to open her present. She pulled off the lid and discovered… well, meatloaf. Severely aged meatloaf at that. "Tsk. Let’s get this over with,” Vandrad said, holding up his present in one hand and looking in the direction of the announcer. "My guess is some kind of snow globe.”

“Quite the adventurous guess! Let’s hear it for our contestant while he peels the wrapping paper off and--”

"That’s quite enough of that,” the prince said, clearing the colorful wrapping off in one swipe and opening up the box in record time. He reached out and pulled out… a snow globe! The scenery inside was that of a house and several trees, all lit up for Christmas.

“Ohhh the legendary Father Christmas Anchor! Tales are told of this particular magic item, that allows the holder to speak directly to our bubbly guardian of Christmas, the Winter Gift, the--”

"It looks like I’ve won. Here,” he said, glancing towards the nearest child and casually tossing the snow globe to her. "I imagine Father Christmas would much prefer to talk to you.” he stated as he crossed his arms and started to walk away.

Ho ho ho! And what makes you think that, Vandrad du Wolff?

    "Oh no.”

Mercury chuckled merrily while Mythal looked over the atrocious garment, speaking up about protective programs they could put her in that might save her from Vandrad’s wrath. Her grin only grew. “Now, where would be the fun in that? Besides, I like making daddy angry. It usually means good things for me.” She winked at him. While they had yet to really outright admit to Serilda and Mythal that they slept together, Mercury knew they weren’t idiots. It didn’t take having more than two brain cells to rub together to figure out that the prince and Silver Wolf mage bumped uglies on a regular basis, and even if they hadn’t put that together, well… Bellum was quickly approaching, and there would be no hiding that knowledge once amongst the du Wolffs, even if Vandrad wanted to.

Once they were done, the two of them made their way over to where Vandrad and Serilda were guessing gifts. Serilda was handing hers off to an attendant and had a somewhat disgusted look on her face, waving at the air as if to waft a bad stench away. Meanwhile, Vandrad was at the tail end of his own challenge, decreeing his guess that there was a snow globe inside. Mythal and Mercury walked up just in time to see his guess be confirmed as correct, pulling out a water filled glass orb that had glitter and snowy particles inside. The game attendant tried to go off on some spiel before Vandrad interrupted him, passing the item off haphazardly to some kid as they walked by. Then he turned with Serilda to start walking toward them.

“Oh, yes,” Mercury told him, falsely assuming that his voiced trepidation was regarding her sweater gift that she was currently proudly holding out for him to behold. “It’s just your size. I know, because I specifically made sure it would fit over all your edgy brawn.” She shook it a little as if to emphasize or tease him about his imminent future, entirely unaware at the moment that he had much more alarming problems. “I know, it’s the season of giving, and I’m nothing if not selfless. You’re welcome.” She shoved the garment playfully in his arms and then stood back to give him room to pull it over his head, waiting expectantly where she stood next to Serilda, completely unaware of the leafy green decoration currently floating above her head....

It seemed Mercury wasn’t too bothered about the idea of Vandrad being upset with her. In fact, she commented that getting him all worked out usually leaned in her favor. Of course Mythal knew what that meant and apparently the Silver Wolf mage had no problems outright admitting that she and Vandrad were sleeping together at that point. The assumption was there but it had never really been clarified for anyone… until tonight. “Well I get the feelin’ that you’re lookin’ at uh… good things tonight,” he said with a chuckle, not entirely sure what else there was to say. He put the finishing touches on his sweater and then pulled it up to look at it fully, holding onto its sleeves as he looked it over. “Well this is just… atrocious. Really, it’s gotta be one’a the worst things I’ve ever seen. And I made this,” he said with a laugh, tucking the sweater under his arm as he followed after Mercury.

Vandrad and Serilda had found them at a present guessing booth. Serilda had already guessed hers and, by the look on her face, she wasn’t too pleased with whatever it had been. Vandrad stepped up after her, offering his guess of a snow globe. Upon ripping off the top, it was proven that he had been correct, a few of the spectators cheering. The attendant seemed to know some of the lore behind the trinket but the prince was clearly uninterested, interrupting him and passing the bauble off to a child. He was falling in step with Serilda when suddenly he spoke up, a quick remark of trepidation. Based on where he was looking, the only reasonable conclusion was that he had seen the sweater. Mercury taunted him with the sweater, shaking it in front of him and offering her charity at having made such an intricate item for him.

“And I made this for… you? Me? I dunno, I made this,” Mythal said, unfolding the sweater and showing it to Serilda. He may have continued his thought on the matter but just out of his peripheral was a small leafy kind of thing hanging just above the Voidwalker and the Silver Wolf mage’s head. His brow furrowed as he looked at it but it only took him a moment for it to register. “Oh uh…” he started, catching the attention of all of the party and pointing up towards the mistletoe. “For those who ain’t aware, that’s a mistletoe. It’s a decoration that people kiss under. And uh…” Fighting back an impish grin, Mythal took a solid step back so that there was no denying that it was Serilda and Mercury under the leafy object. “Looks like its you ladies that are under it.”

In a callback to one of their first missions, Mythal had a shiteating grin on his face. The same one he wore when one of the women they had saved had kissed Serilda out of nowhere. He was clearly entertained, waiting to see Serilda tense up once more as she realized that, out of tradition, she would have to kiss Mercury.

Well, at least one of them won. Vandrad’s prize was a snow globe, which he quickly pawned off on a passing girl without waiting for the explanation of its effects to finish. When they turned around, Mythal and Mercury had rejoined them and the latter was standing there with her trademark, shit eating grin, proudly holding aloft an abomination of an ugly Christmas sweater, and by the looks of it she fully intended for Vandrad to wear it. The prince lamented the situation, or at least appeared to do so, while Serilda somehow managed to tactfully keep from giggling out loud as the Silver Wolf mage did her typical thing and practically forced it on the man.

In the meantime, Mythal showed her what he had crafted, uncertain as to which of them he’d really made it for. She smiled. “Yikes, that’s pretty bad. One of us should wear that on Christmas, I’m sure it would be quite popular.” It was all she could get out before his eyes trailed up above her. Serilda had yet to reactivate her senses, so she had not been aware of the small item floating above her head, but all she had to do was follow Mythal’s line of sight to find it, even as her fiance gently reminded everyone what the tradition was. Or perhaps it would be more correct to say that his “reminder” was more an informational for the unacknowledged outsider in their midst, as Mercury was the other person caught until the mistletoe with Serilda.

“Oh…” The princess was immediately flustered, though she still kept her composure better than most might. Still, her cheeks turned a bit pink and she gave Mythal an amused stink eye, knowing exactly what he was thinking about. It had been a long time since Serilda had kissed a woman, and both times it had happened had been surprises. What was even harder for her to cope with was that she hadn’t exactly found those women unattractive, even if she hadn’t asked for them to lock lips with her. Her bisexuality was a reality that lingered in the far back of her mind, occasionally present but never dared called into the spotlight, despite the fact that she and her family were more progressive in that regard and had no qualms with people who did not identify as heterosexual.

And of course, Mercury was more than happy to take part, looking up at the noblewoman with a teasing grin and waggling her eyebrows playfully at her. Serilda sighed and shook her head softly. “Well… far be it from me to scoff at tradition,” she finally relented. Granted, saying it was easier than doing it. The voidwalker leaned down to the shorter woman a bit awkwardly, looking to just plant a simple peck and go along her merry way. Unsurprisingly, Mercury had other plans -- though Serilda had a feeling the Silver Wolf mage still took it easier on her than she would have on Vandrad. Mercury leaned right into the kiss, planting her mouth on Serilda solidly enough to cause the noblewoman’s eyes to go wide in surprise and for the blush on her cheeks to intensify. The kiss only lasted for a second or two, but it was still longer than the millisecond smooch she had been aiming for.

When it was finally over, Serilda felt about as red as Vandrad’s sweater. She cleared her throat, doing her best not to look directly in Mercury’s very self satisfied eyes. “Alright then… so, what’s next?”

What the hell had been that voice?

He’d heard it just after he started to leave, a deep, joyful tone that resonated deep in his mind. He had stopped to express his concern, suddenly realizing that he shouldn’t have just tossed away the other man’s explanation so hastily. But just as quickly as he had remarked about it, he was left in silence. He seemed to be staring off as Mercury, quite delighted in her creation, showcased what she had made for him. He gave a quick shake of his head. "What?” he asked, his eyes finally collecting the horrid sight before him. Well she had gone to all lengths to make the most outrageous, utterly ridiculous sweater one could make. She grinned at him, boasting that she had made it exactly in his size so that there was no chance of it tearing. She gave it a little shake, as if that action would entice him to enjoy it or respect it more.

"Tsk,” he scoffed as she offered her clearly selfless act of kindness to him, shoving it in his arms and staring at him. No doubt she wanted him to put it on there and then, as another level of embarrassing him. She was going to pay for this painfully later… which, fortunately, came at the benefit of both of them. He couldn’t deny that having a partner  that let him beat her and use her was kind of thrilling, not including all the emotional asides they managed to come across. "For one night only, woman. Then I’m going to burn it into ash,” he barked as he turned the sweater around to look at it once more, sneering.

Now that’s not very jolly, Vandrad. This sensual, breathtaking image of beauty went through all the effort of making the sweater for you. That’ll be one more tick on the naughty list for you. The voice had returned, chastising him for his words. Vandrad’s eyes turned to his peripherals, checking to see if anyone was close by and talking to him. Of course they weren’t -- his senses would have told him that anyways. With a heavy set frown, he slowly started to pull the sweater on and used the time to speak in his head.

Is this some kind of joke? A facade put on by that ridiculous game master?

If only, my boy. I am Father Christmas in the… well, sort of flesh and blood. You see, that snow globe you touched actually transported me into your head or at least a version of me. And as per the rules of the globe, I will remain with you until Christmas day. That will give me plenty of time to review which list you belong on!

Vandrad scoffed once more, this time a bit more bitterly. "Outrageous,” he spat as he pulled the sweater on fully. He didn’t bother to look down at it. "As if this wasn’t bad enough, it seemed that the charlatan was speaking some version of the truth. The disembodied voice of… Father Christmas is speaking in my head and will remain until Christmas. As if this holiday wasn’t idiotic enough,” he explained, rather than look crazed for talking out loud to no one.

Another tick on the naughty list. Tsk tsk tsk.”

Vandrad ignored the new addition to his mind, mostly because Mythal spoke loud enough to catch his attention. It seemed that Mercury and Serilda had wound up underneath the mistletoe hanging above and the Director was making a point of drawing attention to it. Though the act was seemingly embarrassing to Serilda, who blushed a fair bit, he knew that Mercury was just going to be excited. The woman had commented several times how willing she would be to hook up with either or both of the Rune Knights, should they ever offer. And unsurprisingly, while Serilda leaned forward modestly, the Silver Wolf mage practically threw herself onto Serilda. In spite of himself, Vandrad couldn’t help an amused smirk to cross his face as the Field Marshal’s face turned about as red as it could get.

Then he felt something… cold touch him. And his mind cracked, throwing him back years to a battlefield. Bodies were lying all around him, scorched or half-vaporized. Vandrad’s eyes snapped around quickly but rather than be surprised or shocked, he looked annoyed. His magic pulsed through his veins and tore the illusion to shreds as he twisted around fully and grabbed hold of the air just behind him. The image of a ghostly girl hovered there, her hands grasping at his fingers to try and free herself. "It seems this festival is not all fun and games,” he hissed, even as his senses picked up on several other magical signatures that were approaching. He closed his fist around the spirit’s neck, dismantling her form and reducing it to sparkling, ethereal dust. "Best prepare yourselves -- this winter wonderland just became a battleground.”

He tried to say it without sounding too excited.

Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
    and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
Mercury feigned insult, dramatically putting her hand to her chest. “After all my thoughtful, tireless effort, you’re going to light it on fire? Now I’m just hurt.”

She wasn’t hurt at all, of course. In fact, Mercury couldn’t even hide her glee over the fact that he was looking at the garment in his hands with utter disdain. She was practically wigging with delight as he grumbled and drew the sweater over his head. When he spoke out about how outrageous the situation was, she was about to tease him further only to realize very quickly that he wasn’t talking about the sweater. Her expression melted into a curious frown as he explained that someone he’d spoken to recently had told him some kind of truth, and how apparently he now had the disembodied voice of santa stuck in his head until Christmas. “Wait… what?” Mercury hadn’t exactly stopped to listen to the game attendant, so she was completely baffled by the sudden admission to having some foreign entity in his mind.

Of course, her concern over that was completely derailed by Mythal pointing out that Serilda and Mercury were standing beneath mistletoe together. She glanced up and sure enough, there it was. In all the information Mercury had looked up about the holiday beforehand, mistletoe had interested her greatly. She had been very excited at the possibility of using the tradition to be an imp, and it had worked out even better than she could imagine. The Silver Wolf mage glanced over at Serilda with a wide, cheeky grin. “Well now! Looks like Christmas came early for us both,” she teased, waggling her eyebrows suggestively.

The noblewoman was already blushing a bit, but to her credit she opted not to defy tradition and awkwardly leaned forward to kiss the smaller woman. As far as Mercury was concerned, however, she was going to take what she could get here and maybe use it as an opportunity to try and tempt Serilda into considering something a little more open between their friendship. So while the voidwalker might have merely opted for a peck at best, Mercury planted her lips firmly on the older woman and made sure the act was drawn out a bit. She at least resisted the urge to shove her tongue in the woman’s mouth. After all, she wanted to kiss Serilda, not assault her. And apparently it had been a rather good kiss as the woman was blushing all the harder afterward and having a difficult time returning eye contact; a victory as far as the Xocili was concerned.

Only a moment later did Vandrad suddenly snatch something out of the air, a ghost of a young girl caught in his grip. Mercury couldn’t sense his emotions, but she had sensed the slight spike in his vitals as if he’d suddenly been tossed into battle. She could feel several cold spots forming even as he snapped the girl’s neck and commented that they needed to be ready for more. Mercury drew Mercy out of its holster. “Man, the four of us can’t go anywhere without a fight breaking out, eh?” she teased, not bothering to hide her excitement.

“I can’t believe you lied to me.”

Mercury blinked and looked over at Vandrad. “You’re gonna have to be more specific, killer. I lie about a lot of things,” she teased playfully, maintaining her easy going facade but earnestly shaken by the indignation in his voice and the simmering rage with which he looked at her. Why did she suddenly feel so cold? Not just physically, but like… like some pit had just developed in her stomach? He was looking at her as though just seeing her for the first time, and it was obvious he wasn’t happy with what he saw.

“A lot of things? Or everything? Here I thought we were partners, thought you were someone I could trust, yet this entire time you’ve been plotting to get me and everyone else on this planet killed, orchestrating our world’s extinction!”

Her blood ran cold as pure dread drained the humor from her face. “What? You couldn’t possibly have… How the hell did you find out about that?” Mercury’s body shook slightly as she took a step back from him, as well as from Serilda and Mythal, very much looking as though she were about to run.

He scoffed at her, balling his hands into fists as his empowerment burst to life around him. “None of your business. All you need to understand is that I know the truth, now. I can’t believe I ever considered you my friend… but no matter. I refuse to allow you to be a weakness for me anymore.” Vandrad sank into a battle stance, clearly getting ready to attack her, but Mercury was no longer fully paying attention to him. The second he had referred to her as a friend, she knew something was wrong. Even if they were friends, the prince would never in a million years admit it. This was not Vandrad. Was this an illusion?

Suddenly overcome with extreme anger, Mercury finally found the wherewithal to check her scanners rather than rely on her eyes and ears. A large cold spot was hovering behind her. Whirling around, she swiftly beheaded the spectral reindeer that lingered behind her, the creature poofing back into the ether and leaving only its rider behind, a young woman that looked eerily like an older version of the child ghost that Vandrad had already slain. The woman gasped in surprise, not having expected Mercury to escape the illusion -- and so quickly. Before she could even finish conjuring a spell to retaliate, the Xocili had already unloaded practically a full clip mercilessly into the phantom, several shots flying even after her body had disappeared in an effort to ensure it was dead.

Vandrad… had the voice of Father Christmas in his head.

There were a lot of things he had expected out of this night… that was not one of them. The prince was, understandably, not impressed with the sweater that Mercury had personally made him. But he did not destroy it or throw it away. He simply told her that he would abide her shenanigans for one night and then the sweater would be destroyed for good. He pulled it on, taking his time as he probably weighed just how committed he was to wearing the silly thing. But he pulled it on fully, embracing all of its stupidity in stride which was pretty impressive, considering he was a man of insurmountable pride. He then revealed that apparently, upon touching the snow globe, he had somehow acquired the voice of Father Christmas, an omnipresent being inside the prince’s head until Christmas day. “That’s… a raw deal,” Mythal said, looking rather flabbergasted. He knew that some of the presents probably had some kind of enchantment on them but that was certainly a new one. But at least Santa wasn’t that bad of a mental roommate. And it only seemed like a minor hindrance so Mythal wasn’t too concerned with that. He was concerned over the mistletoe though.

Oh he was an absolute bastard. If there was ever a time that Mythal and Mercury were operating on the same wavelength, it was in that exact moment.

The Darkness King certainly hadn’t planned on winding up under the mistletoe; in fact, it was safe to say he hadn’t even considered it’s existence at all. But the stars had somehow aligned and as he glanced up at it and the two people that were arguably most directly under it, wickedness popped into his head. He didn’t even bother to try and hide the satisfied and teasing grin as he took a dramatic step back, as if he was throwing Serilda and Mercury on a pedestal for all to see. The Voidwalker was surprised, as expected. Her cheeks lightened a bit with color and she gave him a look that was both damning and amused -- a far better one than when this had happened before. But rather than try and find some excuse out of it, Serilda continued to be a woman of honor and respect and agreed that breaking tradition was unbecoming.

Set on actually kissing Mercury, Serilda had to lean down a good distance, considering the height of the Silver Wolf mage. All she wanted was a simple peck, an almost teasing, playful kiss that he’d heard most women do as a way of goofing around. It was a sweet and innocent thought and even Mythal knew there was no way that Mercury was going to let this opportunity fly. Anything to put on a show. So the Silver Wolf mage mashed her lips against Serilda and gave her a deep, solid kiss that lasted far longer than his fiancee had imagined. Her eyes flew open and she was practically glowing that she was so red. A few seconds later and she was free, now blushing in utter shock while Mythal chuckled and applauded, giving the two of them praise. “I would like to say I planned that but man, that was all improv and I am so glad it went down like that,” he admitted, watching as Serilda did everything in her physical power to avoid Mercury’s stare.

But all the pleasantness and fun came to a screeching halt. Vandrad suddenly tensed up, his eyes glazing over for a fraction of a second. And then he was whirling around, his hand snapping out to wrap around nothing… no, it wasn’t nothing. It was a ghost that materialized in his grip, writhing against its prison. Suddenly Mythal’s magical sense woke up, alerting him to different magical powers appearing out of nowhere. Vandrad eradicated the first ghost, squeezing it until it popped and then alerted them to the extra intruders. Then Mercury spoke up, amusingly talking about their inability to have a day off. But then she spoke again, as if she was answering a question that Vandrad had posited… which clearly, he had not. The confusion only got worse as Mercury practically leapt away from them, her eyes wide with fear as she demanded to know how they had found out about… something.

“Mercury, what…?” the Darkness King had started to ask when he felt something approach him from behind. A new sense in his head was going off, telling him about the approach of a specific kind of magic. Not nearly trained enough in his new lacrima to know whatever was coming at him, Mythal spun on his heel and blinded punched towards the enemy within proximity, somehow activating the same kind of magic that was about to touch him. Then all at once, the world jerked out from under him, as if it had been grabbed and pulled dramatically backwards. The festival literally decayed before him, pierces fading into dust as darkness pooled up from the ground and ate away at several different attractions. The other people were gone. And the sky was pitch black, save for the purple stars that dotted the void. Through the darkness he could see the land beyond, ravaged and barren from destruction.

He twisted around. There was Vandrad, lying on the ground,  his entire right arm missing, staring at the sky in an empty, lifeless glare. His mouth was frozen in his last gasp of pain. Beside him was Mercury, her torso ripped from her legs, black liquid pooled out around her remains. She had managed to crawl over and take Vandrad’s hand before she had passed. A scream caused him to spin around again and there was Serilda, on her knees, wearing an elegant wedding gown that was once beautiful but was tattered rags. Above her stood Faera, gripping her by the crown of her head. The Voidwalker’s eyes met his, wide with fright before the Dark Goddess reached around and dragged a taloned finger over his love’s neck, severing flesh and bone in a slow, methodical cut. Serilda’s body crumbled to the floor while her head remained in Faera’s grip, the light leaving her eyes. Mythal tried to scream, tried to rage but nothing came until…

    “MYTHAL!”

Lux was grabbing him, turning him around. There he saw a cloaked creature, its hand frozen against his. That monster was causing this, this horrific vision. The Darkness King found his voice and he emerged from the trance with a cry, the handle of Curse already in his hand. The magic blade erupted from the hilt and Mythal swung it up and then back down, bisecting the ghost in one swipe. Then he fell to his knee, tears fresh around his eyes as he stared at the ground in utter horror.

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Unsurprisingly, the prince wound up electing to wear the garment, if after a brief comment about how he intended to destroy the item completely once the night was over. It was only after he put it on that he spoke up again, completely annoyed over the apparent reality that the snow globe had actually been enchanted, and that he now had the voice of Santa in his head. What was worse was that it seemed Chris Kringle would be taking up residence in Vandrad’s mind until Christmas day. Serilda winced. “Suddenly, my rotten meatloaf doesn’t sound so bad..” She and Mythal were more than familiar with the experience, and it was not something that she would wish on anyone. At least his would only be temporary, however -- Mythal and Serilda were stuck with their disembodied voices for the rest of their very long lives.

The mistletoe incident went down about the way that Mythal and Vandrad both had expected, and after the fact Serilda would realize that she honestly should have expected about the same. Still blushing, she shot her fiance a defiant smirk. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were trying to actively pawn me off to other women. You certainly have a habit for setting me up with them.”

What happened next happened so quickly that it was nearly simultaneous. Vandrad froze for a moment before snatching a ghost out of thin air, snapping its neck in his hand and sending it back to the unknown. Shortly after, Mercury made a comment about how their outings always ended in fights before her demeanor suddenly became… well, strange. She was talking to them like they had said something concerning or accusing toward her, her face wrought with barely contained fear as she took a couple steps back. While she was dealing with that, Mythal was overcome with an assailant of his own, his words stopping in their tracks as he began to struggle as though also overcome with some kind of illusion.

Moonlight materialized in Serilda’s hand, the blessed blade glowing a bright white-blue color that radiated with holy magic. She frantically searched around for something, anything to attack, and found herself coming up empty handed. Unfortunately, ghosts were one of the very few things she could not sense with her magic. Fortunately, it took only a couple seconds for the director and the Silver Wolf mage to free themselves, with Mercury blasting an excessive amount of holes into the ghost that appeared behind her. Lux practically burst from Mythal, the first time the Lightbringer had shown himself since the night Mythal had nearly fallen to Faera’s schemes. It seemed the Seal was able to see what they could not, and he hastily turned Mythal around until a veritable grim reaper appeared before them.

In a flash, Curse was in his hand, its magical blade cleaving the spirit in two before he fell to the ground with tears streaming down his face. “Mythal?!” Serilda quickly knelt next to him, her sword still held out in a protective guard while her free arm reached around to draw him against her chest, holding him closely as she frantically searched for more attackers. “Lux, What’s happening?”

The Seal wouldn’t get the chance to answer. The sound of a hacking cough drew her attention toward the figure that approached them: an old man with a look of such consternation on his face that even Vandrad looked peppy beside him. “They are being assailed by my spirits, Lady Sinclair,” he said, putting a little too much emphasis on her title in order to be disrespectful. “My ghosts are drawn to individuals with deep struggles, using their powers to inflict their victims with visions of their past and present mistake, and even of the futures that await them on their current life course. This one clearly was not a fan of his future.”[/color]

The way he spoke his last sentence caused Serilda to draw up in full regal indignation, as though he had implied that perhaps it was something about her and their future together that had caused Mythal such pain. He only smirked at her. “I wonder, princess… what will you see?” He snapped his fingers and all three ghosts returned each of them rushing her. Before they could get nearly close enough to touch her, however, a wave of crimson energy that looked horrifyingly like fresh blood shot from Serilda’s body, overwhelming the ghosts and destroying them in one fell swoop. Serilda was already on her feet, bearing down on the old man as he scrambled to cope with the fact that all three of his spirits had been so quickly and easily overpowered.

He raised his hand to snap his fingers, but before he could manage it every single bone in his hand suddenly broke, his fingers and wrist all bent at jagged, unnatural angles. He screamed in pain, holding the limb gingerly, looking up only at the last minute in an attempt to spare himself from Serilda’s wrath. She cracked him hard over the head with the pommel of her scimitar, coolly knocking him out cold in a single swift and precise strike. He crumpled to the ground, unconscious. Shaking with rage, Serilda visibly fought back the desire to beat the man further, but only briefly. Her cool mind and cooler discipline won out with only a brief flash of desire toward further retribution before she sighed and waved Moonlight away, replacing it with a set of handcuffs.

She quickly cuffed the man’s wrists behind his back, the enchanted shackles cutting off the flow of his magic so he couldn’t use it when he awoke. Pulling out her iLac, she contacted the local squad of Knights that were milling about the festival and dispatched a pair of them to take the apprehended man to jail. Once they were on their way, she hurried back over to Mythal and pulled him close to her again. Looking up at Vandrad and Mercury, a number of questions raced through her head, particularly toward Mercury… but rather than voice them, the only words that came to her mouth were, “Is everyone okay..?”

Vandrad much preferred a fighting situation over one where they were partying or taking part in frivolous events. If he had been given the option to deal with the ghosts rather than have played the ridiculous guessing game, he would have taken it one hundred percent of the time. But considering he had already participated in such an event and suffered the consequence of a new voice in his head, he was actually a bit more excited to take out his annoyance on some pesky spirits. What he was not in the mood for was anyone trying to play games with his head. He’d dealt with a lot of that ever since he came to Fiore, having had those blasted Sun mages and his own body rip the controls out from under him. For a man who was always in control, losing it was like drowning with no idea which way was up. It was a damn good thing that his magic gave him preventative measures against any kind of invasive illusion abilities. The attempt was over before it even had a chance to take hold.

Unfortunately, it only seemed two out of the four of them managed to bypass the spirits before their illusions took hold. Mercury remarked over the excitement of the battle before… suddenly continuing to talk to him. The prince’s brow furrowed as he glanced over at her, meeting her gaze but quickly realizing she wasn’t seeing him. She had been swallowed up in a vision and a moment later, it frightened her so that she nearly took off running. She demanded to know how he knew about something, one of the many secrets she no doubt was keeping from him. She fell silent as she listened to whatever the illusion said to her but her face was twisting in frustration. Whatever had occurred hadn’t been deceptive enough and she ripped herself out of trance. Her sword swung back, divorcing the head of a reindeer from its ghostly body. A rider had been upon it but before she had time to move or act, the Silver Wolf mage plugged her full of holes from her weapon, reducing it to nothingness.

It was then that Mythal cried out too, Vandrad’s eyes snapping over to see his adoptive brother wielding his magic sword and ripping it downwards, slicing one of the other spirits in half. Immediately after he fell down, overcome with emotions from whatever nightmare he had just endured. He twisted around, wanting to make sure Serilda hadn’t become a victim as well. Luckily the Field Marshal had found the source of the spirits; a leathery old man who looked quite assured of his victory. Of course that didn’t seem to matter much, as Serilda made quick work of his resummoned spirits and then promptly broke his hands with the manipulation of her magic. Before he could remount some kind of retaliation, Serilda had slammed the pommel of her blade against his head, rendering him unconscious. And for a moment, it looked like the Rune Knight was going to punish him further… but it faded away as she dismissed her weapon and brought forth a pair of cuffs.

Vandrad glanced over at Mercury, watching her carefully. Serilda had contacted a local squadron of her people and then rushed to Mythal’s side. The prince walked over to Mercury and put a hand on her shoulder, silently looking for confirmation that she was fine. He continued to look at her until she did so, even if it was half-hearted or lacking any heart at all. "Fine,” Vandrad said simply, turning to look back at Serilda and Mythal. "But I think the party is over.”

Not for you and me, Vandrad! We have so much to go over!”

    Ugh. Merry fucking Christmas.

To say that Mercury had been shaken was an understatement. To say she was furious was an even greater injustice. This old man, whoever the fuck he was, had put it upon himself to invade all of their minds, to make her think that Vandrad had discovered the truth about why she was on Earthland, to play with her guilt and her fears over a situation that she was already greatly struggling with. It was with horror that she looked around after coming back to her senses to realize that she had absolutely spoken out loud. The color drained from her face and she was overwhelmed by an intense sense of regret, sorrow, and fear. Even after things had calmed down, she had trouble relaxing, her eyes continually darting about the place as she tried to keep track of everyone while failing to truly make eye contact.

When Vandrad came over and set a gentle hand on her shoulder, the Xocili flinched instinctively like she thought he was going to hurt her, the image of his rage and disappointment still burned into her mind. She’d seen him look to her that way before in the past, of course, but for some reason it was harder to take this time. Thankfully, she had the wherewithal not to actually pull away from the prince. With a gulp, she forced herself to get her anger and dread under control, allowing his hand to act as a source of grounding and comfort for her to calm down. Eventually, she gave him a soft nod, still without looking him in the eyes in an attempt to say she was fine. The anger was mostly gone, but in its place was a seed of guilt that rang more strongly than any time the prince would have felt it from her in the past. Guilt….

    And hopelessness.
