"Well, well, well. Another one bites the dust, and as usual, you couldn't save them. Pft—Some hero you are."
A fire broke out in the Cedar Town orphanage, leaving fifteen kids in critical condition, and five dead. The locals said that the fire was an accident—a careless mistake of a child that lead to their dooms. What exactly caused it was still a mystery, and honestly not the information is given out to the public yet, but everyone was feeling devastated by the reality of what just happened. Even Nico, who arrived in Cedar to buy some new boots, was devastated by what had happened, even if he couldn't have known or done anything. Not like this.
The fire had been put out now, leaving only a scorched and destroyed husk of what once was a happy, hopeful place. There was chalk drawings on the sidewalk now covered in ash, plastic, child-sized chairs and tables melted and broken apart in the heat, and a neat line of tiny bodies laid out on the ground, covered with a white tarp. Nico stood behind the small crowd, his eyes wide and fists trembling. Next to him, whispering dark thoughts into his ear and filling his head with his deepest regrets was none other than Nabriales, as usual. Of course, whenever bad was happening or about to happen, the toxic voice always found a way to insert himself in.
But Nico couldn't say anything, or even look at him. Instead, his gaze was fixed onto the scene before him, and what could have been done if he had been there sooner, or maybe spent less time picking his boots for his next mission and saved the five who were lying in front of him now. He didn't know any of them personally, but he couldn't help but feel at fault for this happening as it had.
"If... if only I were here... then..." Nico whispered, struggling to get the words out from his throat choked with regret. His entire body seemed to tremble, holding something miserable back.
"Can you imagine what it must've felt like? To burn alive like that? To feel yourself melt away until... poof! Gone." Nico could hear Nabriales cackle through his nose, "Just like that. How... disappointing..."
Nico seemed to be lost in his own misery right now. He could only see the scene before him, and could only hear the words Nabriales said. He was frozen in place, devastated beyond comprehension, blaming himself all the while. It wasn't until a much older, much more observant woman tapped his shoulder that Nico seemed shaken from his focus.
"Excuse me, young man. Did you know anyone from the orphanage?" she asked softly, a look of compassion in her droopy eyes. Nico looked at her not with his usual grin, and more of an expression of surprise. The sadness was ever present, and he could only shake his head weakly after a long pause.
"No.. but, I... I..." he struggled to find the words as he felt his eyes fall to his feet. The old woman smiled, grabbing his shoulder.
"Won't you join us at the cathedral? We are all gathering to pray for the recovery of those kids, and for the safe travel of those few who didn't make it..."
The offer stood, and it became clear as she said it that many people were on their way to do just that. He could see people young and old follow the sidewalks leading to the large, renowned cathedral in the center of town. Looking back at the scene, and then back at the woman, Nico nodded.
"Y-Yeah... I'll do that..."
