OOC Note:: For creative flair, this thread has been written from the perspective of 'Bethany', with Jester playing the role of James.

    Bethany is Dead. WsSaZeB
Anyone who knew Bethany couldn’t deny that she was a vibrant individual. Full of intellect and zeal in everything she did, so keen to put her hand up in class and willing to volunteer for any extracurricular activities available to her. She wanted to procure the perfect record for herself, a commendable reputation of high grade, good deeds and extra credit. So much so that it could carry her all the way to college. That had been the plan, never had she wanted to waver from the plan, she would never imagine it might be interrupted by a red-headed male with sinister intentions. But of course, she was young and not immune to the physical alluring of an attractive make that glanced her way. She had become trapped by his golden gaze and chiselled jawline. And so every dream, every aspiration that she had manifested throughout her lifetime crumpled away into dust in just a few weeks. Only to come to a devastating and brutal end at the hands of her own amourous ideals orchestrated by a man she would eventually come to love and fear.

The first time she saw him was during an unexpected bathroom break. One too many juices during her breakfast debate with her brother Archie had dragged on for longer than she’d expected. So much so that she’d needed to rush off to school before a lavatory break. Unable to hold it, she had frustratingly asked to be excused and so received the pass required to excuse her. After a quick relief of her bowels and washing of her hands, she stepped out of the toilets when she would run face first into the toned chest. Stumbling slightly, firm hands would catch her elbows, preventing her from toppling back through the bathroom door completely.

Collecting herself she mumbled a thanks before looking up to meet the most piercing set of honey-gold eyes she’d ever seen. They were mesmerising, capturing them in his piercing gaze. She remained frozen as she locked eyes with the delicious stranger, he was to put it lightly beautifully sculpted. His creamy pale skin without blemish, a full set of lips that practically to be kissed. He was almost androgynous in his features, his long red lashes defines enough to capture the envy of any self-assured woman. And when he spoke, his voice was like silk, resonating through her in a way that practically made her tremble.

“Are you okay?” He would ask, enlightening Bethany to the fact she was staring, she blushed dragging her gaze away in embarrassment. The only shame that could have been greater was if she had actually drooled. She cleared her throat, offering him a weak smile. “Yeah, sorry I was in such a rush that I didn’t pay attention. That’s the girls bathroom though, just so you know.” He glanced past her for a moment as though to double-check, arching a brow he lowered his eyes to hers once more. “Actually I think you’ll find it’s the mens.” He replied, correcting her. Scowling she turned, looking up at the lavatory door. Her eyes travelling up it’s messily painted wood surface to the little gender-based symbol that was emblazoned upon at. And as she stared at it she realised that the silver shape that was positioned there was in fact the sign for the male-inhabited bathroom.

Her skin flushed an even deeper red as humiliation set in, it would seem that in her rush to empty her bladder she hadn’t double checked the sign. As she remembered seeing the U-bends in the toilet suddenly it registered, of course it was a boy’s toilet, the girls toilets didn’t have those. She brought her face to her hands, “Well that’s totally mortifying.” She uttered under her breath, earning a laugh from the red-head. He would reach up, lifting her chin with his knuckles, forcing her to meet his soul-exploring eyes.

“Hey, it’s not a big deal. Toilets are unisex until you slap a label on them.” He told her, before letting go. She stared for a moment , relief spreading through her at the strangers words. Somehow he’d managed to ease her shame, albeit only slightly. “Thank you,” She responded warmly. “I’m Bethany.” She told him, he smiled, exposing his neat line of pearly whites.

“James.” He replied before side-stepping her, “Now if you’ll excuse me Beth, I have some business to attend to.” He glanced at the bathroom door suggestively, to which she made an ‘oh’ sound before moving out of his way. “See you around, Bethany.” He remarked before stepping inside the bathroom, throwing her a quick wink before the door shut behind him. She stared for a few moments, taking in what had just happened. It was something like out of a movie, nerdy girl next door clumsily uses the wrong bathroom, only to run into her dream guy and share a cute funny moment. And despite all her longings for an excellent track record that would sail her into the path of higher education. She was still a teenager and after several years of rom-coms and ogling guys she could never get, it was undeniable that she still wanted a boyfriend. Not to mention, James, was super hot.

She considered for a moment that maybe this was fate, maybe she was meant to go into the wrong bathroom. To come out and bump into the ultra-attractive red-head, that this random and almost cinematic experience could lead her to her first love story. It was all very exciting for the blonde, and containing the urge to squeal, she spun in the other direction, skipping down the halls excited in her return to class. Running the little tete a tete through her mind repeatedly for the rest of the day. Looking forward to her potential love story without any clue that what was actually in store for the perky seventeen year old, was something much more suitable to a tale of horror.

    —-

It was a few weeks before Bethany encountered James again, she had snooped around her school in hopes of finding him. She had began taking extra bathroom breaks in hopes of rubbing into him, she had checked all of the after school clubs to see if he was in one of them. She had even explored the areas of the school she never ventured. The hang-out zones of the cliques where she would never fit; the jokes, the burnouts and so on. None of them had seen or heard of the mysterious golden eyes hottie she was talking about. And so, she had fallen into dejected disappointment. Whilst she knew she couldn’t have made it up, it was possible that he waa a visiting student or someone who recently transferred out. Either way, it was looking like she wasn’t going to see him again and that was just  something she had to come to terms with.

Did she pine? Of course. She sat in, unable to focus as she day dreamed of him entering her class as a surprise ‘new boy’, he would sit next to her and throw her that devilish wink of his. One day he would forget his textbook so they would have to share, and as time went by they would get closer. He would pass her a note with two boxes labeled ‘yes’ and ‘no’, above which would be a question of whether she wanted to be his girlfriend. She would tick yes and so they would begin their romantic coupledom together, like a teen movie. It was very elementary of her to imagine it this way, but as the inexperienced girl as she was. Her daydreams were still somewhat parentally guided. After all, she’s only ever kissed two boys in her lifetime and any other touching had only surmounted to hand-holding. Little did she know that this was far from the reality of her future.

She had almost started to give up on the prospect of seeing him again when she spotted his flaming red-hair across the school's courtyard. Crouched down next to the bike-ranch, examining the lock on one of the bikes. “James!” She cried out in her excitement, covering her mouth as she quickly realised that she was perhaps a little too happy to see him. Still her cry caught his attention, he would glance around suddenly wearing an uncertain frown on his face. Until he spotted her, she would see it dawn on him that she had called him, and he would visibly relax, offering her a friendly wave. She took this as permission to approach, crossing the grounds between them, she stepped up to the red-head.

“Bethany.” He said in greeting, a flush of happiness rushing through her as she registered the fact he had remembered her name. She paused, frozen, it dawned on her that despite running this scenario through her head a million times, she didn’t know what to say. After a moment of internal screeching, finally she spouted out the first thing she could think of, “What you up to?” She asked in an almost garbled manner. He grinned, looking back at the bike-lock.

“I lost the key to my lock and now I can’t get my bike out, I’m just trying to figure out if I can work around it. My house is a bit of a trek so I’d rather not walk if I have to.” He answered her, she turned her gaze from him to the lock, stepping forward .She reached out, taking the lock off him, she examined it. “Oh it’s tubular, yeah, you’re so blessed you ran into me. I totally got this.” She remarked smugly, handing him back the lock, she swung her satchel round, reaching inside the bag, she clasped onto her fluffy purple pencil case. Her fingers found the zipper, pulling it open she fondled the inside of one of her spare Bic pens. Once she found one, she lifted it out, zipping the pencil case back up as she did so. She ran her fingers down the length of the pen, twisting the non-writing end until it opened. All the while James watched her curiously, intrigued to see what she would do with the random pen. She pulled out the ink-containing tube along with its tip, pocketing that part before taking the hollow pen tube in her hand. She grabbed the lock once more, pressing it into the keyway. Once it was in, she turned it, applying a reasonable amount of pressure when doing so. After a moment, it gave turning in the unlocking direction, it would click and the bike-lock would come undone.

“Amazing!” James gushed, causing Bethany to blush slightly, pleased with her own knowledge of bike locks. She only knew this because she used to bike to her old school and an ex-bully of hersalways used to steal her key and throw it away. Eventually it became too annoying to buy new keys, so she taught herself how to open a lock without one. A random skill she never expected to come in handy, once she moved to a school within walking distance. “Oh, it’s nothing you know.” To which he shook his head. “Nah, you saved me a lot of hassle. I should reward you… how about I give you a lift home?” He offered, her green eyes widened excitedly, although as a thought came to mind her glee quickly faded. “Ah, we’re not really allowed to tandem ride a normal bike.” She told him dejectedly, he eyed her for a moment, before looking around. Then he leaned down, closing the distance between them a little, he adopted a devilish smirk. “I won’t tell if you won’t.”

A ripple of exhilaration sang through her at his suggestion, her heart quickly began to race as she entertained the thought of breaking the rules. She wasn’t really one for rebellion, trying to keep a clean record for her future and all. But the thought of riding on the back of a bicycle with him was just so… romantic. And she didn’t really want to reject him and risk the possibility of losing his interest, this was her chance and she simply had to take it. “Okay.” She agreed, earning herself an appreciative chuckle from the guy. He reversed his bike out of the space, swinging his leg over and sitting himself on the seat. She turned, hopping onto the rear rack, hesitant she brought her hands around James waist. It was subtle, but for a moment he tensed up at her touch, although she was too caught up in the cuteness of the moment to notice his discomfort. After a moment, he relaxed, bringing his feet up unto the pegs, he began to cycle.

The ride itself was completely blissful, never had a journey home felt so wonderful in her life. The feel of his slender waist beneath her arms, the warmth of his back against her side, it took all her will not to lean her head against him but to keep herself at a respectable distance. They didn’t talk much aside from Bethany guiding him in the direction of her house, it occurred to her that he might be going out of his way to thank her, that his home could be in the opposite direction and yet he was still taking her home regardless. She gushed over how kind he was, just another perk to his overall hotness. Alas it would soon come to an end, as together they rolled down her road, pulling up outside of her home. He allowed the bike to come to a natural slow, before putting his foot out against the pavement to come to a complete stop. Bethany pushed herself off, turning towards him. “Thanks so much.” She told him happily, to which he shrugged. “No big deal, you helped me so.”

There was another pause, longer this time as they looked at eachother unsure what to say, Bethany looked down. She didn’t want to go in, she wanted to stay here and talk to him for a little longer. So long had she gone without seeing his last time, she didn’t want such a long wait between their next reunion. His sudden soft laughter broke the silence, “I’ll see you around, Bethany.” He said in that oh-so-smooth tone of his, she smiled back at him. “Yeah, see you." She commented softly, watching as he kicked off the ground once more and began to cycle away. Not in the direction they came in but onwards the way they were going, she watched him disappear around the corner of the street before sighing. Letting out a groan, as she made her way into her house.

    --

Bethany slouched over the armchair of her living room, her brothers borrowed fidget spinner twisting around her finger as she stared at the ceiling. A girlish smile on her lips as she went over in her head the breakdown of what had happened earlier that day. The sound of her brother talking down the headset to his friend Joseph, in the background. “Did you find it?” He asked down the microphone, although Beth was paying little attention to the conversation. Her own mind reeling with happy fantasies of his bike-ride with James, wondering whether this was a sign that he was going to appear in her life more frequently. There was an inkling of regret that she felt, wishing she’d asked for his number. In today’s modern society, she knew that there was no better way to get to know someone socially than through social media. But not only did she not know his number, she didn’t even know his surname. So there was no way to search him throughout the internet, to track down her MyPlace page and see what hobbies he had. There were so many unanswered questions about the enigmatic James, what music did he like? Did he have any siblings? Did he do any sports? Maybe he was a beautiful, brooding artist. She could only speculate at this point and be hopeful that something would happen between them. She sighed deeply, earning a glance from her brother.

“Huh?... Oh… what? Oh no, I just got distracted, my sister’s being all googly eyed over this boy she met.” Archie remarked, he laughed at whatever reaction he heard. “I don’t know, why do you care Jo, huh? Bothered?” He teased, all the while Bethany pulled herself out of her daydream. Glancing over at her younger sibling, she could only assume he was talking to Jo. Her younger brother’s best friend had a little bit of a school-boy crush on her, one she’d known about for years. It was cute, but any capacity for any emotional desire for the dweeby mate of her kid brother was at zero. Even after they hit puberty, she just didn’t feel anything. Not like with James, she knew she fancied James, a friggin’ lot. Swinging her legs off the armchair, she stood up, walking around from the sounds of her brother teasing his smitten friend and towards the bathroom for a shower before bed.

    ---

    Tap.

    Tap.

    Tap.

Bethany peeled her eyes open, wincing into the darkness of her bedroom. She hadn’t been asleep long, this much she could tell, just long enough that the dregs of tire would cling to her eyes as she rubbed them for a moment. She sat up in her bed, listening to the quiet of her room until she heard it. Tap. She jumped, it was light but she wasn’t imagining it. Bethany turned on the mattress, eyeing the greenish glow of her alarm clock illuminating the time. It was quarter to midnight, which brought the question, what on earth was making such a noise. Tap. She turned to the window, the source of the side, pulling her blankets aside, she stood up. Taking careful strides across the floors of her chamber, peering outside to see what it was tapping on her window.

Her eyes grew wide, followed by the sharp intake of her breath. She blinked a few times to make sure he was real. Only to find that he did not fade from her vision and that he was actually there. Standing outside her window, metres below on her front lawn was James. Looking up at her with a sheepish grin, a hand for a small pebbles that he was carefully pinging onto her window pane. She made a gesture for him to wait, before spinning across her room, grabbing her nightgown as she crept out. She wrapped the gown around herself as she snuck down her steps, careful of the creaky steps she’d grown accustomed to avoiding. She didn’t sneak out of her room often anymore, but there was a time when she’d snuck out often to avoid visitations from a certain ex-lover of her mothers. She plucked the front door key off of the keyholder, and cautiously unlocked the door. Stepping out into the cold night, before shutting the door behind her with a soft click. She looked around for him once more, panicking for the briefest of moments as she suspected she might have imagined him. But then as she turned, he was suddenly there, standing in front of her. She met his gaze, unable to help the smile that grew across her lips. “Hi.” He whispered softly to her, to which she mirrored him with her own softly-spoken “Hi.”

There was  a pause, filled with shyness of quiet uncertainty as they debated how to proceed.“Um...why did...why are you here?” She asked, breaking the silence between them. He smiled in that attractive way of his. “I wanted to hang out with you.” He said simply. Such an honest phrase, so easy and so fluid. Yet powerful enough to cause her to swell with joy, he had wanted to hang out with her, to spend time in her company. Feelings of hope flooded the girl, inflaming her crush to newer levels. She didn’t know if she could be any more pleased with this moment, it was both baffling and riveting to hear. “You did huh?” She answered rhetorically, before adding. “So you decided to throw stones at my window, What made you so sure you wouldn’t break it?”

He chuckled before opening his palm to show her the stones, they were especially small, no bigger than fingernails. Which meant, it would’ve taken an incredible amount of force to even damage the window with such stones. “Okay… so how did you know it was my room?” She challenged, raising a brow to which he shrugged. “Honestly, that was just wishful thinking.” He turned, relaxing his palm and allowing the stones to fall to the ground. He would walk over to where his bike was parked, taking off the footbrake. He turned to look back at her, “So, you want to hang out?” She didn’t need any time to contemplate her answer, nodding she hurried over, hopping onto the back of his bike. After he straddled the seat, once again her hands would find his waist. The wheels would spin and they would ride together, this time shrouded in the quiet night.

The cold might have bothered her on another night, but she was so excited about their little escapade that it didn’t bother her. In fact, she felt warm with exhilaration as she rode on the back of his back, holding onto his waist lightly. There were such a mixture of feelings going through her right now, the first of which being the fact that the guy she was crushing on had turned up at her house and asked to hang with her privately. Which obviously meant there was something about her that he was interested in, although she couldn’t assume what it was yet. A part of her hoped that he shared in her infatuation, and that it could lead in that direction. But for now, she would only assume that he thought she’d be  a cool hang, not wanting to get her hopes up.

They rode out to the outskirts of town, towards the raising slopes that lead towards the main road. It was before coming off onto the main round that James diverted onto a dirt track, a dark path illuminated only by moonlight. He seemed to know where he was going though, as after a short while he came to a stop, hopping off the bike and putting on it’s brake. Bethany hopped onto the ground, turning to face him as he scooted off. He would nod his head in a way that indicated for her to follow him, which she would do so gladly. Moving from the dirt path into the trees, they would walk for a short while before stepping out into a clearing, where there was a tipped tree that was formed in such a way that it looked like seating and a few short metres in front of it was the edge of a cliff overlooking the town at night. “This is kind of a special place for me.” He told her softly, “I found it a few months back and now I come here every night just to… get away you know.” He reached up, scratching the back of his head. She took a few steps forward, peering over the edge of the cliff. It wasn’t too high that it was especially dangerous, but high enough to provide a nice view. She turned back to him, beaming in a content manner, responding to him earnestly. “I love it.”

He moved forward, sitting down into the dip of the log, she would move to join him. “So what do we do now?” She asked, not really sure how to proceed. He reached into his backpack, unzipping it, he pulled out an old-fashioned portable music player. Reaching over he offered her a headphone, which she took before popping the bud into her ear. He put in his own earphone before pressing play, a soft melody began to play, an indie tune something she was actually pretty into. And so they sat there, listening to music, which eventually divulged into talking about music, which then transformed into general conversation which went on and on, until they lost themselves in conversation until the soft rise of the sun began to seep over the town.

    ---

The hot water pouring from the shower head seeped over her tired body, waking up the teenager. She only managed to catch a few hours of sleep after sneaking back into the house before everyone woke up. Luckily, it was Saturday now, which meant the entire house was taking in the benefit of the weekend and the permission to sleep in instead of getting up for work. She had stayed into bed until past eleven, before finally dragging herself out for a morning shower, hoping that the water would wake her up enough to cover up any signs of lack of sleep. After finishing her wash, she returned to her room, dressing herself in some casual jogging bottoms and a purple hoodie. She made her way down to the kitchen, where her brother was sat at their kitchens island, his best friend Joseph straddling the stool next to him. As he spotted Beth, he stopped talking, dropping his spoon with a sudden clatter. He awkwardly swallowed his bite of cereal before greeting her. “H-Hey Beth!”

She waved in response, before moving over to the cupboard, she grabbed herself a bowl and moved over to join them on the island. Reaching across the counter where the milk and cheerios sat, she made herself up a bowl, her actions still slightly sluggish despite her shower. “I’m telling you bruh, it’s already been sold for parts.” Archie told Jo, not bothering to swallow his bite as he spoke, earning a disgusted glance from his sister. Jo groaned, “This blows man, my mum went ballistic when I told her. Starting going on about how I’m irresponsible and that it’s probably my own fault because I didn’t lock it up properly.”

“Well, did you?” Arch asked with a raised brow, Joseph’s face sunk into an irritated scowl. “Mate, I checked it twice before I went in, it was locked.” He replied defensively. Beth scooped a spoonful of cereal into her mouth, not really sure what they were talking about and  not really caring. Joseph was pretty clumsy and was always getting into some trouble with his mum for something or other. It really didn’t interest her enough to ask what it was they were nattering about. Instead, she would reach into the side pocket of her hoodie, pulling out her phone. She eyed the screen, she had exchanged James’s number last night, but hadn’t got up the courage to text him yet. She didn’t want to seem too eager and put him off, she was fairly certain magazines told you to play it cool or something along those lines. So she was trying to resist the urge to message him, even though every fibre of her being really wanted to text him. As she stared at the screen, her heart sank at the lack of his name under her new messages. She scrolled through the few she had, and noticed an invite from Fiona to go see a film. She smiled, cinema might be a good shout to take her mind off of texting James too soon. Texting Fiona back confirming, she eagerly returned to her breakfast, a smug smile on her face and she remembered last night's conversations.

    ---

The reception hall of the cinema was as packed as it always was on a Saturday, a soft hum of excited nattering as those inside eagerly awaited the films they were going to see. Bethany stood in the queue of the popcorn line, double checking her allowance as she estimated how much she would be treating herself to. She had always been quite good at saving her pennies, unlike her younger sibling who would splash his cash within the first day of getting it. Bethany spread herself a little more efficient, only taking out a limited amount of spending money wherever she went so that she wouldn’t overindulge. With what she had she could treat herself to a medium popcorn and soda which was plenty all things considered. Fiona, her best friend nattered along next to her, excitable babbling about the film they were going to see.

Fiona was a plump girl, she wore vintage clothes that included a set of bright red oversized specs and a green beret. The beret was supposed to be french chic, but Bethany knew it was really an attempt at hiding her dark roots, as though people would believe those rich-plum tones were her natural colour. At present she was prattling on about some incident in the debate club that Bethany was only partially interested in. Academically Fiona was one of the few students that fared better than Bethany and had an impressive collection of extracurriculars to boot. But she wasn’t very popular as an individual, she was argumentative and wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. In the years that Bethany had known her, she didn’t know anything who could out-argue Fiona, and whilst Bethany didn’t mind. There were several individuals who were not as avid fan of ‘debating’ as Fiona was. She was often avoided for it, but that suited them just fine.

“I honestly can’t believe Ryder got a point for that one, his argument was completely unfounded and I haven’t found a shred of empirical evidence to support his point.” She berated irritably, Bethany gave her a bemused look. “I mean, is it really that big of an issue if you won the debate anyway?” She asked tentatively, earning an eye-roll from her bestie. “It’s about principal Betney…” She began swiftly slipping into another tangent, although Bethany stopped listening, distracting by a sudden sound behind her. She glanced around, noticing the spilling of sweet packets that had accidentally been knocked off the shelf. Seeing someone kneeling down to pick them pack up, Bethany instinctively crouched down to help. Only to catch the face of the person who had caused the mess.

“James?” He glanced up at her, staring in apparent surprise before smiling. “Hey,” He replied, “Fancy catching you here.” She grinned in response, her heart racing in her chest at their sudden interaction. Awkwardly, she scrambled to collect the rest of the candied goods and place them back on the shelf. They two of them standing once more, they stood there without a word, looking at each other. A moment of quiet shared between them until finally Fiona cleared her throat loudly, causing Bethany to jump. “Oh! Er… Fi-Fiona, this is James. James this is Fiona, my best friend.” James offered her a friendly wave, to which she nodded curtly, hers narrow with uncertainty.

“Nice to meet you, what are you here to see?” He asked in his usual smooth tone, Fiona said nothing, allowing for another pause before Bethany decided to fill the silence. “Revengers, the latest one.” She immediately regretted saying the latter part, because it was obvious that was what she meant. However he showed no sign that he minded, “Cool, me too.” There was another moment of quiet before Bethany glanced at Fiona. Even if her friend didn’t always get on with people, normally she was a little less ‘socially challenged’ than this. Bethany shot her a look but Fiona didn’t notice, her eyes on James, her gaze speculative.

“Um...are you with anyone?” Bethany asked, he shook his head. “Nah, I was supposed to come with my cousin but he bailed on my last minute. I was already here so, figure I’d watch it anyway… that’s not weird right? Seeing a movie on your own? Ha, now that I say it out loud it seems more awkward than I realised.” He remarked sheepishly, scratching the back of his head. Bethany resisted the urge to swoon over how cute he was, instead blustering out more words. “That’s not awkward at all, totally normal… but um, if you want you can always join us, right Fiona?” She asked, looking to her friend, her eyes pleading. Fiona finally pulled her gaze away from James, who seemed completely unfazed by her staring. As she looked at Bethany, she pursed her lips. “Sure, why not.” She commented dryly. Bethany beamed, her eyes darting back to James. “What do you say? Wanna join us?” She asked, trying desperately to contain to hope in her tone.

“Sounds great.” He remarked, causing Bethany’s heart to race further, butterflies fluttering happily inside her. The group proceeded to approach the counter, buying their tickets and snacks. Bethany was surprised by how much candy James treated himself to, “Sweet tooth huh?” She remarked, he grinned in response before throwing a gummy bear into the air and catching it in his mouth. As they made their way into the theatre, they made their way to their seats. Settling in swiftly, Fiona sat the furthest into the row, Bethany placed herself in the middle, whilst James sat on the end. As the lights soon dimmed, the adverts flickered on before them. Bethany noticed a strangeness with Fiona, who wouldn’t directly talk to James, at least not directly. If he said anything to her, she would direct the answer to Bethany, something that Bethany couldn’t help but find herself becoming irritated by it. Why was Fiona being so unfriendly?

She decided to talk to Fiona about it after, and focus on enjoying the movie along with Jame’s company. Although as the movie began she could barely find herself able to concentrate on it. All she could think about was him, sat next to her, so close. She could smell his aftershave, feel the warmth of his arm next to hers. Her heart wouldn’t calm down, and she was suddenly very conscious of her sweating. Had she put on deodorant before leaving the house? She couldn’t very well sniff her armpits to check. Gosh, it was just so tense, but also, exciting. To think she would run into him here, a welcome experience. She hadn’t been able to bring herself to text him yet, nor had he texted her. But this made that all okay.

Suddenly she felt a tap against her fingers, she glanced down to where her hand was lying on the armrest. He had rested his hand next to hers, she glance up at him, his attractive features directed towards the screen. His eyes remained ahead, but she would feel his fingers nudge hers again, she would respond by inching her hand close, so that their hands were touching slightly. His warm fingers wrapping themselves around hers, her breathing hitching as they somehow were suddenly holding hands. Resisting the urge to grin like an idiot, they would stay like that for the remainder of the movie.

    ---

Bethany waved goodbye as James left the back in the main hall of the cinema, her face flushed with pink and her eyes glazed over. Slowly she turned to Fiona, unable to without her swooning expression. “Isn’t he so hot?” She asked her friend in an airy tone, only to earn an eye roll from Fiona. Bethany immediately scowled, reminded of her friends unwelcoming behaviour. “Seriously Fiona, what is up with you? Why the ice?” She barked, her pent up frustrations coming out in her tone. To which Fiona responded by inherently becoming defensive.

“What’s up with me? More like what’s up with you. Why are you inviting some random creep to join us on our movie day?” Whatever response Bethany had anticipated, this certainly hadn’t been it. “Random creep?! He is not random and nor is he a creep, I happen to know James, I happen to like James. Surely you of all people know me well enough to realise that.” She snapped in retort. Fiona crossed her arms over her chest, her expression turning quickly sour.

“Yeah, I could tell, it was incredibly obvious on your part. It was also obvious to me that he was totally playing on it, the guy is definitely trying to manipulate you. It wasn’t an accident those sweets got knocked off the shelf, he did that on purpose.” Bethany sighed in exasperation, “Maybe he likes me as much as I like him, maybe he was trying to get my attention. Heck, he held my hand during the film Fiona! I don’t know alot about dating but I’m pretty sure that’s a sign that a guy is crushing on you. Or is that too hard to believe?” Her voice was rising now, she found herself becoming increasingly flustered by her friend's bizarre accusations.

“I didn’t see a guy crushing on a girl, Betney. It was more like… a predator eyeing its prey. How can you not see it? His eyes, the way he carries himself, it’s subtle but it’s there… He’s just… weird. I have a bad feeling about him, and my gut is usually right. I don’t think you should see him anymore.” Bethany swelled with bewilderment, her eyes wide and her expression incredulous. She couldn’t believe that Fiona was asking something so ridiculous, James wasn’t weird in the slightest. Sure he was smooth and kind of silky in the way he did everything, but he was also kind and interesting to talk to. Bethany eyes narrowed, and the next words that would come out of her mouth would be laced with venom. “I see what this is, you’re jealous.” Now it was Fiona’s turn to look bewildered.

“WHAT?” She yapped, to which Bethany just shook her head, “Of course, you’re never supportive when I have a crush, you always have some criticism. This is just different because this time, a guy actually might like me back. Which is more than you can ever say for yourself because let’s face facts, Fiona, you’re not exactly dateable.” She was being harsh, harsher than normal, but she couldn’t help it. She was just so rattled by her friends behaviour, and for so long she had tolerated Fiona’s negativity without rebuttal but at this point, she’d just had enough. Fiona’s expression hardened, she shifted her grip on her back.

“You know what, fine. It’s your funeral, but don’t come crying to me when it all falls apart.” She spat, before turning on her heel and marching away. Bethany watched after her, a small part of her felt regret over her words. But that was soon squashed by her lingering rage, Fiona was jealous. Jealous of James, why else would she try to get Bethany to stop seeing him? Bethany turned and stormed off in the other direction, making her way out of the cinema. She felt her phone vibrate in her pocket, and reached down to check it. A small text message lighting up her screen.

    Had fun today - J.

Her scowl simmered quickly into a smile, distracted momentarily from her anger, she quickly set about texting him back; Me too x.

OOC Note:: For creative flair, this thread has been written from the perspective of 'Bethany', with Jester playing the role of James.

    Bethany is Dead. WsSaZeB
The next few weeks that followed were quite the change of pace for Beth, normally her life consisted of a systematic balance between studying, mixed with time spent with either her family and Fiona. But since their fight, Fiona wasn’t talking to her, and whilst Bethany had tried to apologise for being mean and convince her to give James a chance. Fiona steered away from her at every turn, making it very clear that whilst Bethany hung out with James, she would not be spending time with her. At first this caused a lingering upset in Beth’s mind, but as the first two weeks past, she quickly quit trying. If Fiona wanted to be this way, then so be it. It wasn’t worth stressing herself out over her friend's latent stubbornness and attempt to disrupt the possibility of Bethany’s first ever actual love life.

James however had been increasingly present, they had grown accustomed to texting back and forth each day. Talking about everything they could;  school, movies, books and so on. Bethany was astounded by how much they shared in common, things she would not expect a guy to enjoy; he was about to chat away with her easily. He was amazingly well-read, and talented to boot. Bethany who was, artistically challenged, had complained to him about her presentation. How it looks plain and uninteresting, to which he had offered to provide his aid.

The pair sat together in the local library, having commandeered a work table for themselves. A large sheet of A2 in front of them, along with lots of other materials around to decorate it with. It was so blissful, sitting with him, working through the layout. She couldn’t help but be in awe of his artistic mindset, his suggestions and feedback reflect ideas that she never would have thought of. All the while not reducing the effectiveness of her presentation, it was amazing really, when she had met James she had assumed that he was some type of jock-type guy or a laid back cool guy who didn’t care about education. But he was actually really intelligent, with the confidence to deliver his points succinctly, in a sense he was almost flawless. How could one guy be so perfect?

She didn’t know the answer to this but she didn’t care enough to think about it, focusing more on spending time with him and enjoying herself. He was stretched across the presentation, his skilled hands sketching a title for her, all the while she wrote up her report segments in her as neat a handwriting as she could muster. Still as she did this she felt a strange feeling run down her neck, she looked up sharply, spotting her immediately. Across the room, standing between eyes, Fiona  eyed the two of them. A strange look on her face, whilst her expression was mostly blank, she looked momentarily sad. Beth glanced at James who hadn’t noticed their observer, before returning her gaze back to her friend. Fiona looked on for a moment more, before scowling suddenly, shaking her head she would spin on her heel, books in hand she stormed off to the front desk. Bethany watched after her, shaking her head in irritation. Fine, if she wanted to be petty, so be it. The blonde girl would return her attention to James, who’s golden eyes were now on her. “Still not talking huh?” He asked quietly.

She shook her head in response, “I don’t know what else I can do honestly, I’ve apologised more than once. Like I get that she doesn’t know you, but to ditch me over us hanging out is just… ugh, I don’t know.” She groaned, sitting back in her chair. James straightened up slightly, looking in the direction that Fiona had stormed off in. “Well, there’s not really anything else you can do. You’ve tried to mend things, and if she doesn’t care about you enough to appreciate that then, maybe she’s not a friend worth having.” He told her, his tone strangely serious. Bethany glanced at him in surprise, she’d never heard him say something as harsh as this but she had to admit; He had a point.

There was a pause, during which she glanced down at the table, trying to figure out a response. As the moment drew out, she would feel his hand on her chin, lifting her face up to look at him. “All I’m saying is that you’re such an awesome person, you deserve nothing less than the best. And if people don’t realise that, then they don’t deserve you.” Her eyes would widen, and joy would flood her at his words, her heart racing swiftly as blush filled her cheeks. “In fact, I want to hear you say it. Say ‘I deserve the best’.” His gaze held hers, she was suddenly aware of how close he was, so close she could count the delicate spatter of freckles that covered the bridge of his nose. “Say it.”

“I… deserve the best.” She whispered breathily, he flashed her a brilliant white smile. Staying there for a moment, before letting her go and suddenly turning away from her. “Good, now let’s get this project done shall we.” He continued smoothly, she stayed in that position for a moment. Still in shock over in how close they had been to kissing, after a moment she would shake herself. Clearing her throat she quickly returned to the papers in front of her, trying to cover her beetroot blush with her hair as they continued their work.

Bethany eyed herself in the mirror, running her hands down the pastel yellow floral dress she had adorned herself in. It was so girly and pretty, a dress she had been saving for a rainy day, but considering she was going to be hanging out with James today, it seemed like as good a day as any. She heard the buzz of her phone, and checked it, seeing that James had messaged her to let him know he was outside. She did a quick once over, making sure she was ready. Once sure as she could be, she rushed out of her room, making her way downstairs.

She wasn’t exactly sure what they would be doing today, just that they would be hanging out together. Which was fine by her, any time she got to spend in James’s company was always welcome as far as she was concerned. As she reached the foot of the stairs, she almost bumped into her brother and his friend Joseph. Stopping just short of them, they eyed her for a moment, Arch let out a low whistle. “Dang, where are you going dress like that? Don’t tell me you have a date! Who is he and just how deranged is he to be going out with you?” Archie said in a teasing tone, waggling his brows. Bethany made a scoffing noise, pushing past him.

“He’s just a friend, and he’s perfectly sane thank you.” She snapped before opening the front door and stepping down the footpath, her brother and his friend peeking around the doorway to see who it was. She quickly forgot about them as she spotted him, waiting at the end of her drive, her arm resting casually on his bike holding it in place. He smirked at the sight of her, his eyes taking a moment to admire her dress before meeting her gaze. “Hey.” He said in his usual smooth tone.

“Hey.” She replied, brushing her hair out of her face, all the while hoping he appreciated the dress. Was it okay? Had she gone overboard? What if he didn’t like girly-girls? Her mind reeled with panicked thoughts, only to quickly be put at ease by his next line. “You look pretty” He added, her face quickly grew hot at the compliment, and she glanced away coyly. “Thanks, you too.” She mumbled, before realising her error. “No, um, not pretty, I mean, you do… ah...er, I mean to say, you look good.” He chuckled softly at her fumbling, her golden eyes trained to hers. “Thanks, shall we go?” He asked, she nodded quickly, taking a step to the back of the bike.

“OI.” The sound of a sudden shouting stopping her, She snapped her head around to watch as Jo and Archie made their way out down the front path. “Dude, that’s my bike!” Jo barked, approaching swiftly and grabbing the handlebars of Jame’s bike. James shot him a dubious look, “Er, no...this is my bike. You must be confused,” He told him, but Jo shook his head. “No, it’s mine, I know the scratches. This is mine, you stole it.” He snapped, stepping up to James. James straightened up slightly, he was almost a foot taller than Jo and was much more athletically built.

“You’re mistaken, I’ve had this bike for years. Those scratches are from several bmxing accidents,” James told him, his tone cold. Bethan could see the tension quickly mounting, moving around she tried to stand between the two of them. “Come now, let’s just talk about this. Jo, how can you be sure this is your bike, the shop was bound to have sold more than one, are you sure you don’t just have the same model?” She said, attempting to defuse the situation. “Beth, come on, if Jo says it’s his, then I believe him.” Archie argued, Bethany looked over in frustration, “And if James says it’s not then I believe him.” Jo’s gaze moved to Bethany, he eyed her for a moment with conflicted emotions.

“No, it’s mine. I know it, and I’ll be taking it back now.” He said, yanking the bike sharply, James quickly grabbed his arm, stopping him from pulling the bike further. “Get your hands off my bike.” He told him, his voice low and threatening. Jo should have buckled but as he glanced back at his crush, he seemed to think better of it.  "Get your dipshit hands off me.” He barked in retaliation, attempting to yank the bike once more. Only this time finding himself unable to move the bike, he yanked again, but to no avail, Jame’s strong grip holding him in place. Bethany moved to intervene but Archie was pulling her back, “Don’t get involved Sis, Come on Jo, don’t let him make a twat out of you, teach this prick a lesson.”

As Jo struggled against the hold, he would suddenly pull back his free arm, and throw a punch. His knuckles grazing James’s chin but barely moving him, however, what did change immediately was Jame’s demeanour. His eyes which were normally so calm and collected, suddenly grew hard, filled with cold fury. They bore down on Jo with such intensity that he would feel a subconscious shudder run through him.

“GUYS STOP!” Beth yelled from Archie’s arms, but it was too last, Jame’s threw his bike aside, turning his full attention to Jo. His free fist flew forth, colliding with Jo’s cheek with so much force that blood immediately sprayed from his mouth. He then grabbed Jo by the shoulder and bring his forehead crashing into the younger boys nose, the thud accentuated by a very audible crack as Jo’s nose broke. Jo flailed in Jame’s arms, pitiful attempting to swing at the guy but with little effect, James would hook his leg around the back of Jo’s before punching him once more, knocking him off of his feet.

“JAMES STOP, OH MY GOD!” Beth screamed, ”LET ME GO ARCH,” She snapped, her brother stared ahead in uncertainty. Torn between risking his sister getting involved and getting hurt, and helping his friend who was getting repeatedly stomped on by the redhead at this point. Beth threw her elbow back, hitting her sibling in the face and shocking him to the point of letting her go. She ran forward, just as James bent down to pick up the bike and had raised it over his head. “JAMES PLEASE!” She cried, running in front of Jo’s quivering body. James stopped as he saw her, the bicycle held above him as he stood there, his chest rising as he panted with rage. “Please, that’s enough.” She begged, placing her hands on his chest, he looked down sharply his eyes locked on her palms. He would shake for a moment, before coming to a stop, his expression becoming calm once more. He turned, carefully lowering the bike to the ground. He moved to the path, not looking back at them as he climbed onto the bicycle.

“I’ll see you around Bethany.” He said quietly, before riding away down the road, she stared after him dejectedly. Archie would rush over to Jo behind her, checking over his friend who was whimpering in pain. “You see what he did Bethany, your boyfriends a psycho!” He spat angrily. Bethany couldn’t say anything, still in shock from the incident she had just whispered. In her mind, she would just the same two words as she stared down the now empty road.

    He’s not.

The fight at the Carrington household that night had been one of the worst their families had ever faced. Bethany stood across her kitchen island, where her parents and Archie were positioned across from her. Their expressions were maddening; Archie’s ignorant rage, her mother’s look of concern and her Father’s stance of morality. They had of course, taken her Brother’s side in this instance, having seen the state of Jo after the fight. “How are you not getting this? Jo hit him first!” She barked angrily.

“Because he grabbed him and wouldn’t let go.” Archie snapped in retaliation, a point that had been repeatedly brought up. Bethany shook her head, “You were there Arch, he tried to accuse James of stealing that bike and then take it off him.” She countered defensively. “And how do you know he didn’t steal it? How long have you known Jo and how long have you known this loser? Five minutes. You're only on his side because you fancy him.”

“I know James, he wouldn’t steal a bike.”

“Beth, sweetie, you have to understand. This boy really hurt Jo, for him to do that over a silly argument is not acceptable. He can’t be good news,” Her mother chimed in, which would prompt her Father to join in too. “He’s lucky Jo’s family isn’t pressing charges, if it was up to me he would’ve been arrested.” Beth let out an exasperated moan.

“Jo started the fight, Jo accused him without evidence. The fight wouldn’t have even happened if you hadn’t have pulled me back the way you did. I could’ve calmed James down before he fought back.” Her voice was getting louder, angier. The fact that the family were ganging up on her this way, not bothering to listen to her side. It was infuriating. “I didn’t want you to get hurt.” Archie argued.

    “Bullshit.”

“BETHANY MARIE CARRINGTON!” Her mother barked, however she ignored it, continuing with her point. “You held me back because and I quote you were encouraging Jo to ‘Teach this prick a lesson’, no wonder James felt threatened and decided to defend himself. You and your idiotic mate, decided to start a fight you couldn’t finish. As far as I’m concern, Jo got what he deserved.”

    “Now you stop young lady,”

“No I will not, everytime anything ever happens you always listen to Archie over me. Because he’s the oldest, he’s the struggling student, he has ADHD and that excuses his behaviour over mine. Well you know what, I’m fucking over it and I’m over this family.”

    “GO TO YOUR ROOM, NOW.”

“GLADLY.” And with that she stormed away, rushing up the stairs, tears flooding her eyes as she threw herself down onto the bed.

Bethany leaned herself against James shoulder, it was the early hours of the morning, way before the sun had risen. That night he had turned up at her house, tapped on her bedroom window the same way he had that first night. Together they had ridden the bike to the same spot that he had shown her last time and just spent the next few hours in quiet. Unlike the first time, they hardly spoke more than a few words as the hours slipped past. This was fine with Bethany, instead, she would just enjoy his company. After enough time, she would finally bring it up. “How’s your cheek?” She asked softly, looking up at him. There was a pause, as though he was thinking about what to say. He sighed, “It’s fine.” There was another long pause, before finally he continued. “I overdid it huh.”

“Kinda.” She told him honestly, he looked down at her, before leaning forward and running a hand through his hair. “I just… I’m just so sick of people who assume the worst of me you know. People are always so quick to think that I’m a bad person, my parents did the same. And your family most likely do to now, I know your friend Fiona does.”

“Fiona’s not my friend.” She told him sharply, still irritated by the fact that her so-called ‘bestie’ was still refusing to speak to him. He scoffed quietly, “Does she know that?” She glanced at him suddenly, surprised by his tone. He seemed strangely upset, “Is everything okay?” She asked tentatively. He shifted awkwardly in his seat, the air around him shifted, palpable with new tension.

“I...” He began, eliciting a long pause, one that dragged on for way longer than Bethany felt comfortable. “I’m so used to no one ever being on my side, and people say they are but… they’ve all proven to be liars. I just want someone I can trust you know,” He explained. She admired his expression, he was stiff, cold, almost unreadable - except for his eyes. “You can trust me,” She said, her tone hopeful that he would. He looked up from the page, meeting her gaze, his golden eyes exploring hers.

“I need you to show me, show me you’re on my side.” There was a pause between them, and even longer silence than before. What was he asking of her? Her mind reeled as she tried to work out his words. There was a ringing in her ears, her blood was racing, he was closer now. When had he closed the distance between them? He was merely inches away now. Waiting, his stare unfaltering, her body was trembling suddenly. But not in a bad way, it was good. Very good.

And suddenly she knew what he wanted; devotion.

    “I will.”

The soles of Bethany’s kitten heels clicked against the cafeteria floor as she stormed her way toward the table where her ex-best friend was sat, sipping on a can of cola. Fiona didn’t notice her approach, which was exactly why as she stopped in front of her table, she only waited for a moment before slamming her palms on the table. Creating a loud clatter that caused Fiona to look up from her book. “What?!” She barked sharply, rattled by Bethany’s actions.

“I’m done Fiona, done waiting for whatever jealousy trip you’re on to simmer over. So here’s some truth you desperately need to get through your thick skull; I like James and I’m not going to give that up just because you say so. And if you can’t accept him then we can’t be friends any more.” Fiona stood up sharply, rage filling her eyes as she glared back at Bethany, “Are you serious? You’re going to throw away our friendship over a guy?” Bethany scoffed, crossing her arms across her chest.

“No Fiona, YOU ARE. Because a real friend wouldn’t ask something so ridiculous just because a guy likes me, but I guess you’re not a real friend huh. You’re just jealous because no guy would ever like you, not with your chronically resting bitch face.” Before Bethany could duck, the cola flew out of Fiona’s drink as she swilled it directly toward Beth, covering her completely. Causing a loud gasp to erupt from not only Bethany but the rest of the cafeteria. As students gathered to watch the confrontation between two usually compliant students.

    SMACK!

The collision was firm, enough to jar Fiona and make her stumble slightly. Bethany’s hand immediately throbbing from the point of contact, Fiona straightened up, her expression hardening. “Good luck with your new friend, hope he’s worth it.” She said coldly, picking up her things and storming away. Bethany stared after her, before glancing around at the students. Who were staring at her in shock, because good little Bethany Carrington had just slapped her best friend.

“Take a fucking picture it will last longer!” She shrieked, turning on her own heel and rushing in the direction of the girls toilets to wash away the soda now staining her front.

“It’s still in my hair James!” She whined pitifully, following him along the earthen path he was leading her on. She had been ranting about Fiona for over an hour now, all the while following James as they hiked through the trees. A slight detour from their usual hang out spot. “Where are we going anyway?” She pestered, feeling slightly irritable after all the recent events. It seemed like every secure string of her life was becoming loose, James was her only net right now. “Don’t worry, We’re here now,” He told her reassuringly, moving into a clearing, there was nothing especially significant about this point of the woods. She frowned, unsure of what he wanted to show her, all she could see was this weirdly shaped tree. The base of which was boxier than the rest, with curious indentations curved into it.

“I don’t understand, you brought me here for a tree? You have a thing for odd trees, you know this right?” She asked in an playful tone, he chuckled, indicating with her hand for her to come closer. She obeyed his instruction, approaching the stump that he had kneeled down by, in the base of the bark there was a grove in the tree. One the sunk all the way inside of the tree, wide enough to fight a small child. James would reach in, “I found this a while back, pretty cool huh?” He asked as he pulled out of the tree what appeared to be a semi-automatic rifle. Her eyes widened in shock as he presented it to her, it was an incredible weapon, one that she had never seen up close. It’s slightly worn grip told her that it had been used often, she looked up at James bewildered. “Where did you get this?”

“I bought it, well I didn’t, but my cousin did. He gave it to me as a present, I like to shoot targets with it, sometimes game. It helps me blow off some steam.” He told her, caressing the length of the gun with his fingers. “I figured that you've been under a lot of stress lately. That this might help you the way it helps me,” She softened, relaxing at his words. She had been quite shocked at the presentation of the gun. But to know that this was its purpose quickly put her at ease. “I … I don’t know how to use it,” She replied honestly, he beamed expectedly, as though he had been prepared for such a response.

“I can teach you, if you like.” The uncertainty she had been feeling quickly washed away, replaced with a new sense of excitement at such a prospect. James, teaching her how to shoot, a new experience that only they would share - The idea positively thrilled her. “Okay!” She agreed, he shot her a happy grin, reaching into the groove of the trunk once more. He pulled out a box of ammo, and began showing her the features of the gun. Explaining each feature carefully and concisely, he would take his time to ensure she understood each part. Making sure not to miss out any important details and he taught her. After thirty minutes of explanation, he would guide her to her feet, “Okay so I’m going to take a shot at that tree, watch what I do okay. You’ll see me cover the points I just did,” He told her, indicating a tree ahead of them that she could see he had used for target practice before. Stepping away from her, he positioned himself. Bringing the rifle up to his shoulder, she would suddenly become completely still, his golden eyes focusing down the sight of the gun. It was strange, she had never seen him so ‘natural’ before, she had seen shooters in movies but James just looked so normal wielding what would be considered a lethal weapon.

After several moments he fired, releasing a shot into the centre of the target, wood would splinter away as he hit his mark. Adrenaline coursed through Bethany as she applauded him, he chuckled at her response. “That was amazing James,” She gushed, stepping up to him, their eyes meeting suddenly. The quickening of her pulse no longer due to the shooting of the gun, she stilled as his gaze bore down into her capturing her spirit. She thought she had frozen, but somehow she was moving closer to him. Their forms gravitating toward each other, his free hand would caress her neck, wrapping itself behind her nape. She would feel him pull her closer, her eyes fluttering closed as she allowed herself to inch toward him. Until finally their lips met, slipping into the most tender of kisses. In seconds she was lost to him, lost in the feel of his kiss as he skillfully massaged his mouth against hers. After what felt like forever they parted, she opened her eyes to look up at him. Her arms weak, her cheeks flushed, completely at his will.

Finally he spoke, “So er, you want a go? At shooting the target I mean.” He asked, clearing his throat. She bit her lip, trying to suppress her giddy smile before answering him.

    “Sure.”

“Miss Carrington, are you listening to me?” Her teacher, Mr Farren would ask her stern, snapping her attention back into the room. She was currently sitting in his private office, listening to his tired berating. “This is important, Bethany, your grades have dropped dramatically this past month. I thought you were aiming for a scholarship to Kingston?” He asked her scaldingly. “I am,” She answered, not meeting his gaze. “You can’t skimp out on efforts now, you may have a great record but your credits are dropping.”

“I understand that, but this is just a hiccup Mr Farren, and surely my grades up until this point should show that I’m more than credible as a student.” She argued defensively. Mr Farren straightened slightly, “This isn’t the first time a student has fallen off the wagon and flunked at the last minute. I understand that you're at a difficult age, but you cannot let yourself get distracted. You’re a promising student.”

“I’m sorry,” She told him, although her tone wasn’t entirely sincere. She was tired, tired of everyone getting at her. Why couldn’t they see that she was trying? Lately, it seemed like everyone was against her, everyone but James. “I hope so, Miss Carrington. Because I’m sorry to say but, if you don’t pick up the slack then I won’t be able to give you the personal recommendation we agreed to at the beginning of the year.” Beth’s head snapped up, her stare incredulous as his words reached her. “Are you serious?” She barked, “You promised me Mr Farren,”

“I understand that, but Kingston is an important connection, as Alumni there I certainly cannot recommend a subpar student.”

“Subpar? SUBPAR?” She stood up suddenly, slamming her hands on the table, “HOW DARE YOU, I HAVE WORKED MY ASS OF TO GET THE CREDITS I HAVE.” She was shouting now, no longer able to contain her rage, “Miss, Calm dow-”

“NO I WILL NOT, YOU’RE TELLING ME THAT A MINOR BLIP ON MY GRADES IS ENOUGH TO LOSE MY RECOMMENDATION BECAUSE YOUR SCARED OF UPSETTING YOUR PRECIOUS REPUTATION.”

“You know what, get out of my office, I will not be talked to this way by a student. And you can forget your recommendation altogether.” She swelled with rage, furious at him, she reached forward, grabbing a large stapler off his desk. She pulled her arm back and launched it at him, letting out a cry of rage as she did so. The stapler bounced of his head, elicited a cry of pain from the man as it’s hard edge cut open his forehead. “Get out. Go home, you are suspended until further notice.” He growled through his teeth, she stared at him in shock. Unable to believe what had happened, “Mr Farren, I’m so-”

“OUT NOW.” And with tears in her eyes, she fled his office.

Weeks had past since her suspension, and it felt at this point like everyone was furious at her. Her teachers, her friends, her parents. James was the only one, the only one who cared. The thoughts that swarmed the young girls head continued to grow increasingly toxic, spinning in her head and her rage simmering more and more each day. They were all traitors. Everyone on of them. They all promised to support her, to stay by her side. And she had worked hard to make it worth their time, day after day. She grinded and grinded in hopes of reaching a dream set upon her by her parents. To be the best, the most impressive. Never taking any real time for her. No time for socialising. No time for love. No time for Beth. It was infuriating. “I hate them James,” She told him, adjusting her grip on the gun. “I know sweetheart, as you should. They have no make you feel this way,” He whispered in her ear, his hands on her waist as he helped her adjust her stance. ”I just wish they could feel the way I do, they keep doing it, making me miserable. And they had no concern over how I’m doing, it’s just always shit. Shit, shit, shit. I’m getting told off every day and I’m just sick of it. I wish they could know how this feels, how they’re making me feel.” She rambled, tears streaming down her cheeks. “And how does it make you feel?” He asked softly.

“I feel helpless,” She told him, her voice laced with melancholy as she unveiled her truth to him. “Well, you know what you should do.” He began, guiding her gun away from the target, he would steer her until her sights fell on a moving object in the distance. A rabbit, nibbling at grass in the trees, unaware of the pair. “You should take control. You’re helpless because you let their actions control you. But you don’t need them, what you need is to turn the tables on them.” He let go of her, stepping back to give her room. “Take control Bethany.” Her heart was pounding in her ears, she stared at the animal ahead, the weapon in her hand surprisingly still. A few seconds passed until a shot rang out through the woods.

And the rabbit fell down dead.

Bethany ran through the corridors of the hospital ward, panic shown on her teary face as she rushed to the room he was in. 18, 19, 20, Room 21, that’s the one! She sprinted through the doors, slamming them open, gasping as he fell into her sites. There he was, on the bed. James. His head was wrapped in bandages, his eyes blackened and lip bearing a thick red split. His arms peppered with bruises and bandages on his fists. “James!” She cried, rushing over to him, sobbing heavily as she reached his bedside. She shook her head in disbelief. “Who did this?” He shook his head weakly saying nothing. She turned to the nurse abruptly, “Please tell me, how did this happen to him?” She cried hysterically, the nurse looked down at her. Her gaze sympathetic as she begun to explain.

“The injuries tell us that he was attacked by several individuals, I didn’t hear much of the police report. But I believe it might have been a group of Eastside students.” She explained her words clearly an attempt to add clarity to the situation. Bethany, however, sobbed harder, her body shaking. Her classmates did this. She turned back to James, placing her hands tenderly on his arm.  “I promise you James, they’ll pay for this. They’ll pay for hurting you. I’ll make sure of it.”

The steps that filled the empty hallways of Eastside would echo loudly, Bethany’s steps were slow and steady. It was about midday, on a Friday, the last period before lunch. Two weeks after Jame’s hospitalization. Everyone was tucked away in their classrooms right now, a day like any other. No one knew of Bethany’s Carringtons whereabout, nor did they care. They should have cared.

She reached her classroom door, it was Mr Fallen’s lesson right now, he was rambling away as usual. A bandage stuck to his forehead, she stared inside through the window of the door. No one realised she was there, watching quietly. Her tired eyes sporting purple bags, and yet strangely calm. She reached forward, her fingers finding the handle, she twisted it open. Stepping inside of the classroom, eyes found their way to her, confused. Bethany? The Carrington girl? The one who got suspended for attacking Mr Farren? That Bethany? What was she doing here? God she looked a mess. What a weirdo. Those were the hums that circled the room, whispers spoken loudly. No one cared if she heard, if she knew their thoughts. They should have cared.

“Miss Carrington, you are still suspended, you can’t be here.” Mr Farren’s word fell on deaf ears, she didn’t even look at him. As she approached her desk, the front row, right in the center. Always the efficient student. She shifted the bag from her back, or rather, the guitar case. It was Archie’s, but he wouldn’t need it. He wouldn’t want it. Not after today. She unzipped the bag, saying nothing. “Miss Carrington, I must insist you leave.” She opened the case, reaching inside she pulled out the rifle, screams of horror erupting around the class as she turned to her teacher and fired. The students jumped out of the seats, rushing to the door desperately, she would turn to them and one by one, she continued to fire. They didn’t care to help each other, just fled as their fellow students were mowed down. They didn’t care, they never cared.

    They should have cared.

Her feet rushed through the trees, her breathing ragged, her forehead laced with sweat as she fled. Not stopping, she ran and she ran. She knew where she was going, it was the only place she could go. He would understand, wouldn’t he?

She ran into the clearing with the tipped tree, and no doubt there he was. Sitting on the tree, he glanced back at her. With her dishevelled hair and her bloodstain clothes. “Bethany?” He asked, getting to his feet, she approached, fingers trembling, still holding the gun. “Bethany, what did you do?” He asked carefully.

She stepped closer to him, “I did what I promised you, I got them back, for what they did. Some of them anyway, the Rune Knights turned up so I ran. Ran here.” She explained, his eyes raked over her. He breathed deeply, grabbing her, he pulled her in for a hug. She dropped the gun, eagerly taking her embrace. He held her for several minutes, she tried to pull back but he wouldn’t let go. “Oh, you foolish girl.” He whispered, his voice curiously silky. Different to what she was used to. “James?” She asked, he was squeezing her tighter now. Too tight.

“James? You’re hurting me.” She told him, she could feel him shaking, what was happening? Was he laughing? He was. He was indeed laughing, he pulled back throwing his head back as he let out a loud cackle. So uncharacteristically manic that she was frozen, What was happening? “I don’t understand James, what is going on? This is what you wanted right?” He continued to laugh hysterically, then as quickly as he started he would stop, a wild grin stretched across his face.

“Oh yes, it was. You played your part perfectly and now. Now it’s time for your finale.” He told her, his palm stretched out, a thick rope would pool from his fingers. Snaking to the ground slowly. “I...I don’t understand. I did this for you James, I love you. You love me too right? James?”

“Oh Bethany, sweet sweet Bethany.” He purred, his golden eyes meeting her. Alight with deranged menace, “Who could ever love you?”

They found her on Saturday morning.

Not long after the dawn had broken the sky. Her limp forms dangling from the branches of a tree near the tipped-oak clearing. Kissed by death from the fibres of a coarse knotted piece of rope. The news of her death would both shake and relieve the town folk. Eastside School shooter so consumed with her actions that she committed suicide. Such a sad tale, one they was told many times over. And whilst all the details were covered and concluded. There was always one strange detail that eluded everyone.

    Who was James?

Who was this mysterious boyfriend that had disappeared during the time of the incident. No trace of him in sight. The family mentioned him. Blamed him. But no one knew of him, he was a ghost. Did he even exist?

No one knew. No one cared.

    They should have cared.
