“Ambassador Seralson will see you now.”

Mythal glanced up at the secretary quickly, catching her warm and smiling face before she turned and gestured towards the door. The Darkness King let out a soft sigh and turned to look at Serilda, finding a foundation for confidence in her eyes when he was lacking. Even with it, there was still a trepidation in his gut – butterflies that fluttered about in panic. He took only a moment before he rose to his feet and started through the doors.

He knew this meeting was coming. After everything that had happened with the psycho woman and her successful assassination, there was bound to be an investigation. Every person was interviewed time and time again, asked for their version of the story. He hadn’t been privy to any of the meetings or heard any chatter from the people that had survived long enough to confess what they had seen so he was going in blind. But eventually the investigation had reached its conclusion and it was time for Mythal to come and hear the results. The only answers he was allowed to give were in the form of an official report so… this was the first time he was going to hear or talk to anyone.

The Magic Council had summoned him and Serilda, which led him to believe the news was going to be bad. If they had merely brought him, they would most likely give him what equated to a slap on the wrist and let him go. But she was his superior and if they wanted her there, then there was a good chance that punishment was about to be handed down. Who knew, after all the things he’d done in his life, he would be punished for trying to take down a killer? It was a morbid sense of irony that he would have laughed at if he were in better spirits.

The Council chambers were empty, which was a bit shocking in its own right. He’d actually been kind of hoping to see the faces of the men and women who made decisions for Fiore. But alas there was only one other person in the room besides himself and Serilda – a man of a mysterious nature. He stood just about Mythal’s height and most likely had a similar build, though you couldn’t tell by the outfit he had chosen. A black robe covered almost the entirety of his body, tied together over his chest and staying close together all the way down to the floor. It parted up near his chest but only enough to let the white garment beneath poke out in the form of two collars. A clear white bandana covered the lower half of his face while an intricate black and gold mask hid the rest, revealing only his deep chocolate eyes. Dark green hair hung out from beneath the turban he sported, framing his face and hanging out the back end to rest against his shoulders. He stood there waiting for them as they approached, holding onto an onyx black staff that obviously doubled as a magical instrument. The head of it was jagged and pointed, with runic symbols inlaid on the flat sides with gold.

As the couple came to a stop before him, he glanced between the two of them slowly. “General Ragnos, Field Marshall Sinclair,” he said, giving them each a small nod.

    “Shall we begin?”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
It had been a very long time since Serilda had felt this level of dread in her gut. She had not been present at the conference that Mythal had been assigned to run guard duty at. At the time, it hadn’t appeared any different than any other such posting. Senators and other political figureheads held press conferences on a near daily basis, and nothing of interest ever happened outside of the occasional handful of vocal but otherwise peaceful protestors. They’d had no reason to suspect that this event was going to go over any differently than past ones, and so Serilda had opted to stay in her office and continue paperwork on some of the research they’d been doing.

Now she sorely wished she had joined him.

She had been so focused on her own tasks that she hadn’t learned about the disaster until it was far too late, not even having the lacrivision in her office turned on. As such, the news didn’t reach her until it was far too late for her to assist with anything aside from cleanup and spearheading the investigation. The field marshal had been able to watch the footage shortly after checking on Mythal to make sure he was okay, and what she saw had sickened her to her core.

The story only got worse as Mythal told her his version of everything that had happened, and of the twisted woman that had orchestrated it. Not only could the mysterious psychopath apparently shift the form of her body to any visage that she chose, but from what Mythal had told her she appeared to use horrific magic of nightmarish design. Serilda had been shaken to the bone at the knowledge that somehow the villain had managed to conjure information she shouldn’t have been able to know about both Mythal and herself, even going so far as to torment the general with Serilda’s body in sickening and perverse ways.

It had caused Mythal to snap, and that frightened her. They still knew very little about the darker half of him that only seemed to appear in moments of life or death need, except that he was violent and willing to get what he wanted, no matter the costs. The last time he had appeared, Vintermyr had been completely wiped off the map. As far as Mythal knew the woman had been taken care of, but unfortunately there was no proof of her demise just yet… and a great number of people had died, not just the senator.

It was a stressful time for them both, with Serilda stuck in the awkward position of being both lover and superior to the man that was likely about to receive the blame for everything. Normally Serilda would shoulder that upon herself as the marshal, but given that she wasn’t there, there was zero way that was going to fly. All she could do was hope that the council saw reason.

Not that she held so much faith with the council, these days.

The secretary called them inside and Serilda caught Mythal’s gaze, doing her best to uplift him with a look. She squeezed his hand for encouragement to remind him that she was there, but given that she had act in the capacity of his boss today, the gesture lingered only long enough to get her point across before she had to let his hand go. Steeling herself and putting on her best stoic expression, the two of them wandered into the chamber together.

The room was empty save for the single ambassador by the name of Ariford Seralson, a man that Serilda had seen on a number of occasions but not worked with personally. He was a mysterious figure that never seemed to show his face. The marshal approached him in a professional fashion, her hands clasped easily behind her back, somehow not shaking with the trepidation she felt inside. “Good morning, ambassador,” she said by way of greeting, her tone even with years of practice that allowed her to hide her anxiety. “We’re ready when you are.”

Mythal knew that if his position was awkward, Serilda was probably downright uncomfortable. It was one thing if he was simply her subordinate but they were lovers as well. The Darkness King wasn’t concerned about her teetering between those lines; Serilda had a duty and he understood she would uphold it as best she could. It was one of the reasons he loved her after all. But he imagined she was weighing options in her mind, coming up with several different paths and routes for them to take moving forward. It would be difficult no doubt but they’d get through it. And as long as he had her there beside him, he’d be fine. Even with her having to fully embody the role of Field Marshall.

Mythal had never worked with Ariford Seralson, having only seen him one or two times. In truth, everything about the Magic Council was kept so close to the chest that they were more of a mystery than anything else. And considering their suspicions of the Council’s intent and goals, that mystery made everything that much more concerning. Ariford was perhaps the closest one to the Council, acting as their voice when they weren’t present and sharing their thoughts and decisions. It was a decent position to be in but also one that could be easily corruptible. Mythal couldn’t help but wonder if he was part of the inner circle.

Serilda greeted the man and stated their readiness while the Darkness King remained quiet, his eyes sliding between the Voidwalker and the Ambassador. Content with the greeting, the man brought forth a document from his robes, flipping it open carefully and thumbing to a page within it. “After considerable investigation into eyewitness reports and detailed documents from yourself and other Rune Knight members, we have to admit we find the recent terrorist attack troubling. This city is meant to be the safest in all of Fiore and yet, we’ve suffered several egregious attacks that have left numerous innocent people dead. And the successful assassination of Archibald VanderBeld is a heavy blow to the political world. While the Magic Council didn’t subscribe fully to his methods of wanting to reform criminals, he was still a strong voice of the people and his lost presence will be felt hard.”

The man flipped the page but raised his gaze to Mythal, his eyes narrowed slightly as he looked the man over. “When we offered a position within the reforming Rune Knights to you, it was not an easy decision. While you may wish to keep the outside world from knowing your origins, General Ragnos, your case was not forgotten by us. Though the Council has changed members over the years, that does not mean the decision to let Gren Ragnos adopt you was one easily taken in stride by anyone. There are still those that wish they had ruled against it and taken you into custody for the sake of the nation.”

A bold statement and one that made Mythal’s jaw clench. But he remained quiet, doing his best to look as neutral as possible. Ariford met his gaze for a moment longer before he softly shrugged. “But your intentions since you resurfaced have been altruistic and beneficial for Fiore. Placing Lady Sinclair as the Field Marshall and appointing you as one of her Generals seemed a fitting choice, considering the results of several of your jobs for the Magic Council. And as you both are aware, your actions to remove the dark wizard nest in Vintermyr is why you were both further recognized as Wizard Saints.”

That was one way of putting it. In truth, they had been ambushed by the dark wizards there, targeted specifically by Mythal’s sister. It had also been there that Lux and Victoria had emerged, revealing themselves and the couple as Seal holders. That fact had been kept from the Council; while they did nothing to hide Lux and Victoria, because it was not easy to do so, they made sure that any mention of Seals was kept close to the chest. It was safer that way.

“But…” Ariford’s voice cut into Mythal’s thoughts. “The recent attack by the other dark wizard in Era’s center of commerce and now this assassin have left us puzzled. We appointed you to protect and lead but it seems your secondary obligation is… moderate, at best. Before I continue, is there anything you wish to add to this, General?”

Mythal glanced over at Serilda briefly, a visual warning that he was going to speak his mind. In such times it was best to find a baseline on how to interact with someone so close to the Council but Mythal simply wasn’t going to bother. He could already tell that a decision had been made. “All I’ve tried to do is keep people safe. I didn’t join the Rune Knights for glory or glamour and I sure ain’t gettin’ an ego from bein’ a general. If anythin’ it’s more stress than I’ve ever dealt with in my life. I can’t predict everythin’ but I’ve done all I can to be prepared for what could happen. And when shi-… when it hits the fan, I’ve done everything to clear up the mess as quickly and efficiently as possible. I’m sorry about Senator VanderBeld and the people that lost their lives because of these dark wizards. All I could and can do is try to get justice for them.”

Ariford considered this for a moment, humming gently behind his mask. Once the Darkness King had finished, he gave the man a soft nod of… approval? It was honestly hard to tell. “Very well. General Mythal Ragnos, for your inability to protect lives during the assassination of Senator Archibald VanderBeld, the Magic Council has decreed that you be stripped of your position within the Wizard Saints and your position within the Rune Knights.”

It was the blow he was waiting for but it didn’t make the hit any softer. Mythal slowly closed his eyes and let a small breath out from his lips, trying not to think about how, once again, his world had been flipped into the shitter. But before he could linger on the conclusion for very long, Ariford spoke up again. “However,” he continued, flipping a page within the file. “it is because of your courage and dedication to the people of Era and of Fiore that the assassin was dealt with in the first place. You are right, Mr. Ragnos; we cannot predict every terrible thing that will occur in the world. And based on all the information we’ve gathered about the lead up to the assassination, you took every precaution and defended every position you could. You just happened to be caught up in a perfect storm of a devious and cunning murderer who was, apparently, more than capable of getting past any defense.”

Mythal stared at Ariford, a puzzled look etched onto his features. “I don’t… I don’t understand,” he said, his mouth almost failing to work.

Ariford chuckled. It was a weird sound to come from someone in such a high position of power but there it was. “Someone had to take the fall for the failure to protect Archibald. As much as I hate to say it, you were the only viable option to pay. But we cannot deny the actions you have taken ever since your appointment have always worked towards the protection of the people. You risked life and limb against dark wizards in this town several times now, putting others before yourself. To punish you would create public outcry and would weak the support system for the Rune Knights that is only started to rebuild. Therefore, you are now bestowed the rank of Director of the Rune Knights, acting as second-in-command to Field Marshall Sinclair and only answering to her and the Magic Council.”

Mythal didn’t have words. He literally stood there, his mouth hanging open slightly as he stared at the ambassador. “For the sake of the news, we will provide the story that you resigned your positions out of shame to protect the people. We will then, shortly after, respond to the public outcry for justice by rewarding your courage, passion and humility with the rank of Director. The official statement will allow us to convey how much the Magic Council supports you and believes that you are integral into the further defense of Fiore against villainous forces.”

    “That… I don’t… that seems so—“

“Underhanded? The world of politics is a complicated and mountainous environment, Director Ragnos. We must do what we can to sway the people to understand how important it is to keep key pieces in places of influence.” Ariford looked over to Serilda and nodded softly. “I know that Field Marshall Sinclair understands this better than anyone.”

“But that is not all. The reason we summoned you both here today wasn’t just to conclude the findings and judgement on this case. There are two open spots within the Wizard Saints that are open only to those that are deemed the strongest in Fiore. The rank of God is not one taken lightly, as it raises you unto a platform you may have never dreamed of before. Serilda Sinclair, Mythal Ragnos… you two have proven yourselves time and time against challenges that have risen from every place at any time. You continue to impress yourselves to the Magic Council and to the people that serve under you and the public you serve in general. And in all honesty, the recommendation from Branwen was all the conclusion we needed that we were on the right path. Congratulations to you both; you are now both Gods of Ishgar. After the conclusion of this meeting, Maryse will provide you further details on your positions, the titles included in such promotions and what additional responsibilities and perks come along with it.”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Thankfully, Serilda had a reputation for being a rather curt and poised individual, so the ambassador didn’t seem too put off by her cool demeanor, opting to just get right into things. He opened with going over vague details that they already knew about how troubling the recent attack was and the impact of the senator’s assassination. Even if VanderBeld had held some rather… robust views… he was still an excellent and respectable politician that had represented the voices of a great number of Fiore’s citizens. This was all introductory talk that Serilda expected and was more than use to.

What she hadn’t expected was for the man to go so far as to bring up Mythal’s origins, as well as the council’s stance over the years of Gren’s choice to adopt the darkness mage rather than have him incarcerated since infancy. Serilda straightened herself up into the full, regal picture of a noblewoman who was extremely offended, and she had no intentions of hiding it. While she was certainly here as Mythal’s superior, there was no way that she could completely cut herself off from the part of her that loved him, and she had no intentions of letting such irrelevant and personal details of Mythal’s life be a factor in this conversation.

Before she could form any words to chastise the man, however, Ariford continued on to say that, despite their knowledge of the circumstances of Mythal’s birth, the general had proved himself time and again to have risen above what fate would have otherwise designed for him, putting his own life on the line time and again to protect the country and its people. He even referenced the events of Vintermyr in his speech, and how Serilda had Mythal had together managed to extinguish and reform an entire city of dark mages.

Of course, things hadn’t gone down quite like that. The true fight had never been against the dark mages at all, who’d stood little chance against the real threat: Serilda herself. Or rather, Victoria in control of Serilda’s body. The true showdown of power had ultimately been between herself and Mythal, through the guises of other beings that were capable of utilizing their bodies and magics. It had been a terrifying experience that resulted in a number of needless deaths, dark mages or no.

But, the council wasn’t aware of the full details of Vintermyr, and that was exactly how Serilda and Mythal intended on keeping it.

Ariford gave Mythal a chance to speak for himself, the darkness mage glancing at the field marshal as if to warn her that he was about to be blunt. However, Serilda’s gaze was sternly fixed on the ambassador with the barest of hawkish expressions, like she was trying to ascertain the angle he would come at them from. She fully trusted Mythal and knew that if he was going to throw pretenses to the wind and speak his mind, it was because he believed the time had come to do so.

She listened as he explained that he’d been doing everything he could to keep the people of Fiore safe since his appointment into the Rune Knights. Mythal didn’t care for anything about the position aside from the opportunity it gave him to make their country a safer place, and frankly he could only plan for so many mishaps. The events of VanderBeld’s assassination were unfortunate, but he did everything he could have done, and now all he could do was try to move forward and learn from the experience for the betterment of the people.

It was sound logic to her. Serilda understood that Mythal had followed his job to the detail, but not even the wisest military leader could account for all potential factors. The assassination was a tragedy, yes, but it wasn’t Mythal’s fault. Which was why she turned absolutely red with anger when the ambassador announced that they would be stripping Mythal of both his position within the knights and his position as a Wizard Saint. If Serilda had been offended before, she was absolutely ripshit now, and not just as Mythal’s lover. This extent of punishment was undeserved, and no matter which of her generals would have been in this position she would have been severely outraged by the decision.

“Explain to me how that--” she started to say, intent on hearing whatever bullshit excuses the council had for deeming any of these decisions as just. However, Ariford gently cut her off as though he knew his words weren’t going to be well received, wanting to continue with what more he had to say before either of them got in too much of a tizzy over the proclamation. Serilda shut her mouth and continued to listen, though she was clearly unhappy with doing so.

The man went on to agree that yes, there was only so much Mythal could have done, and he did his job to the best of his considerable abilities. The fact of the matter was that their enemy was an intelligent one with a dangerous power that made it nearly impossible to suss her out until she wished to be caught, and there was simply nothing Mythal could have done to stop her before it was too late.

As Mythal stammered to catch up to where this was leading, Serilda allowed herself an audible groan of disgust, rolling her eyes ever so slightly. This was a political show. She could feel it in her bones. The council was setting up some stunt to rile the people and garner their favor, which Ambassador Seralson confirmed only a moment later. While Serilda was more than capable of concealing her emotions when addressing matters such at these to the greater public, it was well known that she didn’t care for such childish plays of politics, even if she knew how to play the game expertly herself. As such, she didn’t bother to hide her annoyance over the act here in the privacy of the council’s representative.

It seemed the real intent of what they planned on doing was assigning Mythal to a brand new role within the Knights as its director, a position that placed him above the generals and second only to Serilda herself as the marshal. He then went on to explain the council’s intentions to leak the news that Mythal had elected to resign his position as general out of some sense of shame over his supposed failure to protect the lost senator. Then, in anticipation of an outcry from the people themselves, the council would then bring forth the news stating that not only had they convinced Mythal not to quit, but they would promote him to a higher rank in recognition of the actions he had taken.

Mythal seemed unsettled and confused by the ploy, to which Ariford gently admitted that it was underhanded but also quite standard fare in the world of politics, which was unfortunately the truth. As much as Serilda disliked the game, even she understood that there were times it was necessary to play it. However, this did not strike her as one of those times. As the man looked to her for confirmation about this strategical delivery, she merely gave him a look of noble disgust. “The people of Fiore are not pawns in a chess game, ambassador,” she informed him cooly, her former anger finally dismissed and replaced with seemingly mild annoyance. “I hardly think it’s respectful, nor necessary, to turn the Senator’s murder and this tragic massacre into a bid for popularity.”

He would already be able to tell by her demeanor that she would play along with the charade only because she had no other choice, and she knew it would be bad for all parties, herself included, if she publically vocalized the truth of what was happening. They could trust her to keep the secret. However, that didn’t mean that she would keep her opinion of the tactic to herself behind closed doors, which was also standard fare in the world of politics.

However, it seemed that the ambassador wasn’t quite finished with relaying the council’s recent decisions. He explained that there was also news to relay to them that was unrelated to the terrorist attack, pertaining to the opening of two God positions within the ranks of the Wizard Saints. Those positions, he told them, were to be filled by the two of them. It was a dizzying finish to the absolute rollercoaster of emotions that they had been on in the last five minutes, with Serilda blinking at the man in an open state of shock. Though he didn’t say so outright, his words lead them to believe that the council had been eyeing them for those spots for some time, and that it had been by the recommendation of no one less than Branwen Frane that they had affirmed that choice.

It took her a moment to formulate words, as it would for anyone in that situation. “This is an unexpected and humbling honor, ambassador,” Serilda finally told the man honestly, her face once more a calm and controlled expression. “Please relay our sincerest gratitude to the council for their faith and generosity.” To back up the genuineness of her words, she took the time and effort to bow her own head respectfully to the man, despite the fact that he held no noble stature or any real position above her own. “We will continue to do our best to prove ourselves worthy of their accolaids.”

Ariford turned his attention to Serilda as she spoke up, clearly not pleased with the way that they intended to promote Mythal. She said that the people didn’t deserve to be played and that VanderBeld didn’t deserve to have his murder used as a tool for popularity. His mask shifted slightly, if only enough to show that he was smiling behind it. “But you misunderstand, Field Marshall. We simply don’t wish to complicate the public belief with matters that may confuse them. Everyone knows that Mythal being assigned as Director is the best move for the Rune Knights but we cannot simply reward him with such a promotion after such a devastating attack. The people want someone to step up and take responsibility with humility and shame over his actions. And then they’ll rally beside him as we throw our support behind his efforts, further helping the overall morale of the people.” The mask did everything it could to hide his emotions but his tone was enough to tell how amused he was that, despite understanding how it worked, Serilda had every intention of voicing her thoughts. “And if anything, the Senator’s unfortunate murder and the heart wrenching loss of the other people will further the call to action against dark wizards. This puts the Rune Knights in a place of popular demand beyond even the former infrastructure’s. I imagine quite a few companies will be seeking to provide relief to you in the form of finances and materials.”

Mythal had no sense of political moves and schemes but even he could see where this was going. It was an attempt to garner favor, as well as to increase a positive focus on the Rune Knights and, with it, the Magic Council. His mention of companies offering support was even shadier; as if this was a move that would provide a new steady stream of revenue. Shady is as shady does, apparently. But the Darkness Slayer remained quiet for the time, honestly too shocked to be able to answer. For a moment, almost a literal minute, he had been completely stripped of his titles and ranks and was simply Mythal again. Ousted from the public eye, he would be forced to return to a life of normalcy. It wasn’t ideal – he’d grown a bit attached to what he had now and losing it had felt like a bigger blow than he expected. But in the end, he knew he would still have Serilda, he’d still have Grappa and Jellisha and he would still have his allies.

But now he was pushed beyond what he had before. Now he was the second-in-command of the Rune Knights. And as the ambassador kept revealing, he was rising to a rank within the Wizard Saints that was saved for those of extreme strength. It was both humbling and concerning all at the same time. And how interesting that it came together all at the same time. The Magic Council had struck a heavy blow, only for them to immediately make reparations with two shiny new titles for him and one for Serilda. Circumstances rarely worked out so seamlessly like that and even the Darkness King was suspicious. But he knew better than to make his motives known – especially with all the work he and Serilda had been doing in investigating. “Thank you, ambassador,” Mythal said, dropping his head in a respectful bow as well. “I don’t pretend to understand all the political jargon but I ain’t blind to honors being granted to me. Please send my gratitude to the council as well.”

The man chuckled and gave them both a wave, clearly enjoying the appreciation coming his way. “It is our honor to grant you both these accolades. And we expect great things to come from our strengthened partnership.”[/color] It was the way he said great that sent a chill down Mythal’s spine. But either way, the ambassador gave them another wave to dismiss them and turned away to walk through a set of doors. He watched the man go before heading back the way they had come, looking over a Serilda briefly. It wasn’t safe to speak here but no doubt they were going to have quite the conversation.

Maryse met them at the door with bundles for each of them. “And Branwen Frane asked that these letters be given to you along with the rest of the information. Congratulations again.”

Mythal glanced at the woman before looking down at the bundle of… well, stuff. There were documents and official notices and press headers needing quotes. All of that he would look over but instead he reached for the homely looking envelope resting on the side of the pack. Carefully he opened it up and, should Serilda do the same, they would find similar letters written, though addressed to each of them.

    “Mythal,

I know this comes as a bit of a surprise but I had a thought the other night. If you are working on learning more about the Magic Council and their supposed misdeeds, then what better way to get yourself closer than to rise to their highest honorary positions? I’d heard rumblings about you two being considered from old friends but I decided putting forth my thoughts would be the best option. I had the thought after you left the other night and went to share it but I noticed that Serilda and Gren were talking outside in the street. I figured it was a personal matter and opted, instead, to take action. I hope you two can forgive me for acting without discussing the matter but I truly wish to help you in your pursuits of justice.

And, truthfully, I believe you do deserve the honors anyways. Whatever fallout comes from your investigation, I believe in my heart that the compassion and strength and willpower you two share stands above other wizards who simply rely on raw power to enact their wills. I hope you know that I’m proud of you, Mythal. I know I haven’t always been the best of friends and I’ve made unfair misjudgments in the past. I only hope I can make amends moving forward.

PS. I had Aster use enchantments on this letter so it seems short and curt so don’t worry about my words being seen by others. I hope to see you both soon.

    Branwen.”

Mythal snorted softly and looked over at Serilda, holding up the letter almost in amused defeat. “That bastard,” the Darkness King mused, smiling softly.

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Oh, this guy was good, whoever he was.

It was only years of self control and discipline that kept the shiver from running down her back as Ariford spoke to her to seemingly correct her thoughts on the elected method of political response. She was not impressed at how amused he sounded over her opinion on the matter, not that she showed it on her face. The way he approached trying to bring her around made her feel slimy and gross, fully affirming her suspicions about what was going on. And unfortunately, there was no way to speak with Mythal silently over the matter before reacting to any of it.

She could only hope that the newly deemed director would trust her and play along as she seemed to consider the ambassador’s sly statement regarding the money and resources that the public would shoe their way in response to the tragedy and Mythal’s humility over it. “Hm,” the noblewoman said, looking away as if she did not intend to be so easily swayed, only to appear to relent after a moment’s thought with his words. “I suppose the additional relief would be welcome. It has certainly been a difficult year, and I should not turn up my nose at a gifted opportunity. Very well.”

Let him think her corruptible. The Saint -- or well, Goddess, now -- of Conviction was well known for her rigidity and commanding presence, but it would not hurt to lay seeds for them to think that she could be manipulated, somewhere down the line. Not now, of course. It would be far too suspicious if she suddenly started exhibiting behaviors of greed and extortion. However, she could lay the foundation for whatever path they thought best to attempt to wear her down over time, keeping the situation within her own control.

Serilda did not play the game often, but when she did, she was damn near indomitable.

Once the man was gone, clearly pleased by their words of thanks and affirmation, she did chance a knowing glance at Mythal in return. He was, as always, of the same mind as her that something about this entire interaction had been completely wrong. But, there was nothing that could be said for now. So instead, in the interest of keeping up a charade in case there was any magic in place to observe them once they were “alone”, Serilda maintained her facade. “You should draft a resignation letter,” she informed him, albeit more gently now that no one appeared to be actively watching them. “Obviously they don’t intend on honoring it, and we probably won’t even have to provide it to them, but just something for us to have on file to back up the story they’re running with. Congratulations, director.”

Serilda did smirk at him there. Despite the filth that this entire encounter had reeked of, there was some genuine good of it. Mythal had been handed the biggest promotion he could receive without taking her own job, and no matter the bile they were going to spin to give it to him, he did deserve it. There was no point in ignoring the silver linings to focus on the load of horseshit they’d just been spoon fed. She leaned over and gave him a small kiss before they moved out into the hallway to go find Maryse.

The woman handed them both parcels that contained a number of documents and requests. Along with it came a letter from Branwen, which Mythal proceeded to open and read. Serilda thanked Maryse as he did so, idly looking through the contents she’d received to see what all was there. Mythal’s amused snort drew her attention back to him as he showed her the letter, which she was relieved to see that the man had thought ahead to have Aster enchant it to mask its true contents -- though she would still burn the letter at first opportunity.

Still, Serilda smiled at its contents. “He’s a sly one, I’ll give him that,” she said. “I suppose we should sent him a gift basket or something. Or maybe just have them over for dinner.” She thanked Maryse for her assistance before the two of them erected a portal that brought them back to her office at the Rune Knight headquarters.

There, she set down all the paperwork before taking a moment to reach over and wrap her arms around his neck, pulling him in for a deep hug that she was fairly certain they both needed. Her magic shifted the air around them, creating a deadzone in their immediate area which their voices would not pass beyond. Serilda inspected her office every day for anything that seemed out of place or for foreign magics that didn’t belong, but it never hurt to be too careful. “As slimy as it is, it’s for the best,” she told him softly. “We’re in for the long haul now, for better or worse. They’re buttering us up to win us over, and I have every intention of letting them do so and believe themselves successful. But we’re going to have to tread carefully from now on, so we don’t walk ourselves into any traps…”

It was surprising for a moment when Serilda responded to Ariford’s explanation, seeming to find reason in it. Truthfully, Mythal felt she would just let the words hang there and let him draw his own conclusions. But instead, she decided the best option was to dive right in and commit to the façade of serious consideration. And she played it as well as anyone could, definitely better than he would. He simply nodded along with her words in understanding – as if the notion was beginning to make sense to him too. Ariford seemed just as pleased as well, perhaps taking note of their reactions and preparing a response for the Magic Council.

As they began to leave the room, Serilda informed him that he should draft a letter of resignation, if only for their records. From the sounds of it, and she orated the same sentiment, they had no intention of going through any formal channels of actually letting him go and then rehiring him. She offered him congratulations for his new promotion and a small formal kiss as an additional little gift. She did earnestly seem proud of the promotion, even if it was coming at the expense of a murder and other terrible situations. While the Darkness King never had any dreams of being in such a position, he couldn’t deny how useful it would be to work directly with Serilda. Of course it also meant that he was taking on the two other sections of the Rune Knights as subordinates but that was something he would worry about later.

Once they had received their information and Mythal had read the letter, he offered it to her to glance through. She was as amused as him, figuring they owed him something for his gesture to them. “Oh yes dinner. That seems to always go well,” he said in a dry, humorous tone. Despite the last time dinner had gone through, she would be able to tell he was simply poking fun rather than vocalizing any sort of complaint. A moment later and they were warming their way back to her office in the Rune Knight headquarters.

Already he felt more comfortable in a space he knew. But Serilda made it better by placing the paperwork down and pulling him in for a tight hug. It was exactly what he needed and his arms wrapped around her back and pulled her even closer, holding her right against his chest. As her magic warped the area around them and left them completely in solitude, he sighed against her shoulder. All the nerves that had built up inside of him came out in a slight rumble of his body, taking a solid moment to purge himself before he felt truly himself again. She circled back onto her prior words to Ariford, commenting on how they had committed now to unraveling this thing until the end. He nodded softly. “I’ve seen some shady shit in my life but ain’t nothin’ takin’ the cake from that. That guy may as well have written corrupt bastard right on his stupid mask the way he was presentin’ himself.” He pulled back just enough to meet her gaze, reaching up to run his hands over her cheeks. “Time to start playin’ our cards close to the chest, babe. You and me, we’re gonna bust their schemes wide open.”
