Description
Many eons ago, a cosmic race known as the Old Ones created an empire reaching across star systems and galaxies. Their power came from two sources: first was their ability to manipulate cosmic energies, which exist everywhere, but are undetectable by most living things. Secondly was as a result of their armies, created by “reaping” individuals from powerful races they came in contact with, to collect their genetic material. Amalgamating the reaped essences of these powerful beings in their highly advanced genetic facilities, they bred powerful soldiers called Incarnati (single: ‘Incarnato’-male, ‘Incarnata’-female) who were physically identical and behaviorally similar to whatever race the Old Ones wished to conquer. These Incarnati usually bore the potentials of utilizing the natural abilities of the races whose essences were amalgamated to create them, as well as the ability to channel cosmic energy to various effects. The Old Ones would then find a way of inputing the Incarnati into their target race’s civilization, and with their careful, and often undetected, manipulation, the Incarnati would grow into beings of considerable power, but end up destroying the target civilization, under the Old Ones’ influence. However, their machinations eventually caught up with them, and the Old Ones were all but destroyed at the zenith of their empire, with many of their relics displaced through space and time. It so happens that in a very rare occurrence, the descendant of an Incarnata, or rarer still, a pure Incarnata, may be found among normal folks, wielding strange and amazing powers. Such a person’s life is always fraught with adventure and danger, for it seems that despite the stories, the Old Ones are not all dead, and there is much harm an Incarnata may cause, if under the clutches of the Old Ones. As the last pure Incarnata, Beira is no stranger to such experiences.
Most times, Incarnati are unaware of their heritage, and will often go through a rocky phase of self-realization. Once they discover their true nature, their powers manifest, though not all at once. Whatever power they choose to use from this lineage tends to affect their behaviour at that moment e.g. if an Incarnata uses a demon’s powers, she may tend to want to do more evil deeds than she normally would under the influence of that power, and using an angel’s powers would make her more willing to do good. As the last pure Incarnata, Beira’s soul is made up of nine essences, each being a representation of the synergy of the axis of good versus evil and the axis of order versus chaos. Each essence, regarded as a ‘Soul’, bears its own distinct abilities and influences on the young Incarnata.
Abilities:
• Soul of Devi: Demiurge
The Devas (feminine: devi) are a group of good and lawful divine beings, possessing great power, including, but not limited to creation. The Old Ones fought a short, apparently ill-fated war with them, but only to secretly harvest their genetic material. Devas are honorable and principled, always holding true to their word.
Plot Ability:One of Beira’s magic types is of creative and transmutational qualities, focusing on physical matter. When using this magic, Beira tends to feel more inclined to act honorably, especially in combat.
• Soul of Archon: Jurisdiction
The Archons are commanders of what many on Earthland call military angels, generally good beings possessing great combat abilities, as well as the ability to call upon denizens of their celestial dimension, the Upper Planes, to cross dimensions and aid them wherever they are. The Old Ones were careful to not enter open combat with them, instead surreptitiously stealing individuals to be reaped. Archons are compassionate and just, often using their vast powers to champion the cause of the weak and defenseless.
Beira gains five spells [two B+, two A+ and one S+ ranked] that allows her to summon a single denizen of the Upper Planes per spell, to do her bidding. These spells follow summoning rules. When a summon is in Beira’s control, she feels more inclined to lend a helping hand to those who are oppressed, or cannot help themselves.
• Soul of Antediluvian: Anastasis
The very ancient Antediluvians were good but chaotic beings of immense vitality and immortality, having been existing, and worshipped by cosmic civilizations, long before the creation of Earthland. Laid back and complacent until stirred into action, they fought a long war with the Old Ones, but their civilization ended when the Old Ones destroyed their physical forms and bound their essences in an unending time-loop in a distant corner of the universe from which they cannot escape. Antediluvians are loyal and reliable, despite their initial proclivities to be fickle and pleasure-loving.
Beira is much healthier than the normal mage, possessing a passive boost to HP by 30%. She also passively regenerates her HP and MP by 5% every post. Plot Ability: As she possesses an Antediluvian’s essence, Beira is unable to die permanently. She regenerates perfectly from wounds over time, and if killed, or her body is destroyed, over time she reforms from mystical cosmic energy, the substance transmuting to recreate her physical form. As this ability is passive, Beira is naturally loyal and feels very strongly against betrayals. Like the Antediluvians, Beira has a strong hedonistic streak, and though she appears to behave more ascetic than she lets on, she isn’t above indulging herself in private.
• Soul of Elemental: Synthesis
The Elementals are embodiments of natural elemental forces, including but not limited to earth, fire, wind, water, spirit, etc. Whether they are truly alive or not is a cause for scholastic debate, and it is believed that they were part of the creation process, but very little is known about these cosmic enigmas, even after specimens from their kind were captured by the Old Ones for the process of creating Incarnati. Neutral to good or evil, but strongly biased towards order, Elementals are regimented and methodological, and are not given to uncertainty.
Plot Ability: One of Beira’s magic types is of elemental disposition, focusing on the manipulation of elemental energies. When using this magic, Beira tends to be more stubborn and unwilling to change her mind once a decision is reached.
• Soul of Transcendant: Fulcrum
One of the youngest races to be encountered by the Old Ones, humans were initially ignored as useless, until the Old Ones discovered their resilience and potential to surpass their current levels. Many humans were enslaved and experimented on, giving rise to a subrace of humans called Transcendants, who were simply humans whose bodies had adapted to cosmic energies. These became the most successful Incarnati templates, as their souls were very adaptable and easily integrated with whatever souls were grafted to them in the Incarnati creation process. Eventually, the Old Ones had an army of Transcendants, which turned on their masters at the zenith of their empire, destroying themselves and the Old Ones almost totally. Transcendants, like their human forebears, are known for their variableness and ability to adapt, usually seeking to surpass their present conditions. As a race, they vary too much to fit into any alignment of good or evil and order or chaos, so they fit into a niche at the center of all alignments, with the capacity to swerve any way they choose.
Plot Ability: Beira’s Transcendant soul serves as a sort of conduit for cosmic energy, magnifying her physical and intellectual abilities to levels beyond natural. She is also immune to natural weather conditions, and her senses of balance and direction are unearthly. While she eats, food is not necessary to her survival. Breathing seems to be vital to her, though she breathes in cosmic energies, rather than oxygen, and thus will easily survive in regions averse to terrestrial life such as vacuums and aquatic locations. All the same, constricting her neck will choke her like a normal human, and she will suffer the consequences, should she breathe in noxious substances like airborne poisons. Note that via touch, Beira can share her ability to respire using cosmic energies with whomever she wishes.
• Soul of Fey: Effervescence
The Fey are a diverse and individualistic race, mostly inclined strongly to nature and natural magics. They often do not choose sides in the good vs evil dichotomy, but are strongly oriented against order, and prefer to run and act wild, as nature does. As a result, many of them tend to be natural reservoirs of great and very wild magic energies. They were extensively experimented on by the Old Ones, and twisted into terrible abominations, some of which still haunt forsaken Old One strongholds. Fey are individualistic and difficult to control, preferring to do whatever tickles their fancy.
Beira possesses the exuberant vitality of the Fey, despite her attempts to behave with decorous deportment. This wild and vibrant energy of the Fey translates to a passive 120% boost to her MP pool. Sometimes, Beira may throw caution to the winds and discard her ingrained etiquette, becoming rather frisky in such moments. However, just like the capricious Fey, it is difficult to determine what triggers these episodes. The fact that she normally tries to suppress this tendency makes the exuberant events uncommon. Her kinship to the Fey also means that she is naturally very willful and doesn’t like being told what to do. An interesting side effect of her Fey heritage is that her ears are pointed, like a fey's, though a lot less pointed than they should be.
• Soul of Mindflayer: Percipience
Mindflayers are light-hating monstrosities whose power lies not in physical prowess, but in their psionic abilities and their rather powerful minds, allowing them to force their wills on others. They are pure evil and are incapable of having any positive emotions, though they seem to value order highly, as they always maintain very stifling and systematic governments. They initially fought against the Old Ones, but quickly realized their folly and aligned themselves with the Old Ones. Till this day, even though the Old Ones are believed to be merely fables and legends, mindflayers can be found trying to unearth Old One technologies, to discover their secrets, and tread the same path of galactic conquest trodden by the Old Ones.
Plot Ability:One of Beira’s magic types is of psionic and ethereal qualities, focusing on the intangible. When using this magic, Beira tends to feel more inclined to be vindictive and sadistic.
• Soul of Aberrant: Catastrophe
The Aberrants were ancient diabolical warriors and scholars of incredible might; it is believed that the Old Ones are direct descendant evolutions of Aberrants, but this could well be conjecture. What is certain is that at the end of the Aberrant-Old One War, all Aberrants appear to have been driven into extinction. Aberrants are curious and driven to experiment on any and all things, with no scruples whatsoever. They do not seem to care for laws, but do not see them as odious either, though their indifference to rules does not prevent them from carrying out their evil intentions.
Beira, by virtue of her Aberrant essence, possesses a strange, unearthly power, manifesting as a passive boost of 120% to strength. She also tends to be rather curious and given to study, merely for the sake of the pursuit of knowledge. Due to her Aberrant heritage, it isn’t strange that she tends to be drawn to forbidden knowledge.
• Soul of Succubus: Cynosure
The Old Ones had a number of encounters with demons, but those they appeared most interested in were the Succubi, evil monsters driven by lust, with no regard for order or rules of any kind. Their interest in the succubi was only due to the latter’s mastery of the ability to manipulate others into doing their will without resorting to violence; it was more resource-saving, and made for willing slaves. Succubi are unruly, as well as lascivious and perverse, living solely for pleasure to the extent of finding it even in pain, and taking greater pleasure in twisting the wills of sentients to obey their decadent whims.
Plot Ability: Beira is considered quite alluring by anyone who beholds her, even if they are not sexually attracted to her. She also seems to radiate an aura that makes people eager to carry out her demands and perform favors for her, unless said people are normally hostile, though they will still take note of her beauty. Strong-willed people (PCs, player-owned NPCs, event NPCs, and other important NPCs) can resist her charms (unless OOC permission is obtained for them to be charmed). Her appealing aura means Beira receives double the amount of monetary rewards she should earn for every mission, having extorted the mission handlers with her charms. The downside of this ability is that, unless she makes conscious effort to hide her aura, she often tends to be noticed wherever she goes, even when she does not care for attention. A curious note is that Beira possesses masochistic tendencies as a side effect of this attunement. She also has naughty tendencies, though she tries to suppress them, as she feels such behavior isn’t particularly becoming of royalty, which she believes herself to be.
