Off to the Pumpkin Patch! Empty Off to the Pumpkin Patch!

Post by Katsumi 5th November 2019, 3:45 pm

    stuff:

Katsumi leaned against a wall as she waited for her partner. They'd were going to pick pumpkins! Apparently, some big sponsor needed some help to get ready for a big Halloween party. The raven-haired Rune Knight had used the opportunity to go outside. Weeks had been spent indoors, tinkering. Shane had helped her take a big step toward shutting down GGO - or at least making it safe to play. However, there were months of work left to do. Not to mention the work she needed to do for the Engineering Corps. Needless to say, her thin body had gotten thinner.

Her doctor had demanded she get exercise, meet new people and go outside. This qualified for all three. New guildmate being met: check. Outside activity: check. Exercise: check. She was following the letter of the order. As soon as all of this was finished, she could go back to the W.H.A.L.E armored vehicle. It was her current project while she took a break from GGO. The Rune Knights needed more vehicles for heavy assaults. And if anyone asked why it was a whale, Katsumi always asked 'why not?'. She hoped to equip an entire squad with whale-related gear. Not for any particular reason. Katsumi thought it would be funny.

While the Rune Knight waited, she tinkered on her Henkan I. The weapon was in sore need of an update. The magic coded into it was as well. Both were added to her list of projects. Katsumi sighed when her pick snapped in the metal hilt. There went that time killer. She looked around her. Same two trees. Same empty alley. Same empty sidewalk and street. Where could her partner be?

Lavanitir was a rather unusual destination for the girl. In fact, she had not even recalled visiting the city prior to today. The scenery, as well as the layout felt very unfamiliar and aided in Charlotte getting a bit lost. While her sense of direction wasn’t one to lead her astray on every corner, it also had its flaws.

But given her rather unique appearance, she at least didn’t have to worry about getting lost permanently. She was very easy to find, basically shining in the somewhat dimmer town. Thankfully there was no need for something like that to actually happen.

Turning around another house, she finally noticed the field where she was meant to meet up with a fellow Rune knight. Not one she had met before, which meant a new chance to make friends or at the very least acquaintances. Provided she wouldn’t screw up, somehow. She was certainly capable of that as much as anything else.

Meekly approaching the spot, she noticed the other girl and tried to take the initiative by approaching, extending her pale hand in an offering of a handshake. “G..good day! Miss Akahoshi? I’m Charlotte, also a member of Rune Knights… here to help with the pumpkins?

Honestly, she didn’t sound super confident herself. And one could say that she wasn’t even really dressed for the job, her body covered in a white blouse with a long black skirt and a light coat over the both, given the colder Autumn wind that was starting to howl. In all honesty, her physical state probably wasn’t one for manual labor, either.

But she tried her best to hide the fact that she was a bit sickly and frail. After all, she was part of the order that was meant to keep peace in the land. What kind of a knight would she be if she showed such weakness?

Off to the Pumpkin Patch! Empty Re: Off to the Pumpkin Patch!

Post by Katsumi 8th November 2019, 4:56 pm

The approach of apparently the only other person in town had Katsumi pushing off the wall. Her Henkan I was slipped back onto her belt. The swordswoman looked immeasurably thin in her large black overcoat. Her white collared shirt hung loosely on her frame. Baggy black pants hid her thin legs and her feet were capped in black boots. Three silver hilts hung from the belt of her pants. Truthfully, she appeared to be a skeleton with just enough dash of muscles to appear semi-human. Katsumi was starting to see why her doctor was so worried about her.

At the other woman's approach, Katsumi tried to grin. The muscles in her face didn't work quite right, however. Her attempt at grinning looked like a small grimace. Her hand came up, nearly swallowed by her sleeves. "Ah, Charlotte-san. It's nice to meet you. Please, call me Katsumi. I hope we can have fun today" Their hands met as the swordswoman talked. Katsumi marveled at the frailty of Charlotte's hand. It reminded her of when she'd first exited LAO. Her hands had been similar if even thinner. It had taken months to gain the little muscle she had now.

"Shall we be on our way? The pumpkin patch is nearby but something feels off. Nobody is around. Haven't seen anybody for an hour. I'd like to see what's going on after we pick pumpkins, if that's alright with you, Charlotte-san." Katsumi didn't want to assume the other Rune Knight would help. While some people were in the RK to help people, others were strict rule followers. If Charlotte was a rule follower, she might not want to step outside the bounds of the job.

Regardless of Charlotte's response, Katsumi led the way to the pumpkin patch. Several large black birds flew overhead. If they'd been in a game, the raven-haired woman would've taken them as an omen. Crows or ravens usually denoted a boss battle with the undead. They were also used to signal mass wilderness areas populated by the undead. This was the real world though. They were just large black, creepy birds... that were flying right at them. Katsumi pulled Henkan I and II off her belt. She would have pulled III instead but she was much better at melee. III was specifically for ranged options.

"Heads up. We have a few incoming crows. I specialize in close combat so I can't hit them until they're up close without wasting mana. Do you have any ranged spells?" Her eyes stayed locked on the crows. The pumpkin patch wasn't that far away. Maybe they could run there without a fight with these crazy birds. "Uh, the pumpkin patch is right around the corner. Do you think they'll leave us alone if we run there?" The crows were close enough to start divebombing. Katsumi activated the Henkan I. It grew into a long black sword. The swordswoman decided to leave whether they were running or not up to Charlotte. Those birds were attacking now.

     Charlotte White Witch Rank A

The feeling of thankfulness for not getting lost didn’t last very long, as the young girl had to actually focus on the person in front of her now. But looking Katsumi over, was the other girl somehow as thin or even more so than Charlotte herself? It wasn’t very often that she’d meet someone of such a frame.

But then again, the world was full of many different people. It was only natural that she’d encounter someone like this eventually. Maybe it was even some sort of fate at work here, considering Charlotte’s status as the white witch, an expert in healing and nurturing magic. Not only that, she was quite knowledgeable in the art of healing even outside of magic.

However, all of that was put aside with the introductions happening. “It… It’s nice to meet you as well, Katsumi!” She definitely wasn’t used to addressing her peers so casually. But if that was what the other girl wanted, then she would happily oblige. Same for her other request, to which she eagerly nodded, causing a few strands of her pure white hair to fall in front of her face.

Of course, I will help in any way I can. But I don’t know if I can do much…” Unconfined in her abilities as ever, she just didn’t want to be dead weight to her partner. Though Katsumi would get to judge that quite soon, given their situation. The crows flying over them in such close proximity made the white witch clutch her dress a bit.

And the situation managed to escalate even further in a span of few seconds. While asked a question, the girl had little time to figure out which answer was the correct one and panicked a bit seeing the black birds closing it that fast. Taking a step back, something materialized in her hand. A white staff with blue crystals.

S-shield!” In an instant, both her own form as well as Katsumi’s were enveloped in a gentle light that constructed round barriers around them, their sturdiness well above what was probably necessary to repel the incoming attacks. At the same time, they did not seem to restrict Katsumi’s movement or attacks at all.

Ah, sorry! I, um… I don’t really know any offensive magic, so… this is the only way I can help…” Given her physique, trying to run away would have probably also ended in a complete disaster for the girl. She was not one for intense physical activity. But as far as magic went, she had plenty of it and was capable of casting even high-ranked supportive spells. Hopefully that was enough for her partner right now.

Off to the Pumpkin Patch! Empty Re: Off to the Pumpkin Patch!

Post by Katsumi 11th November 2019, 4:19 pm

Katsumi wondered at the glowing orb around her. She tried to touch it, waving her hand back and forth. Interesting. The divebombing crows slammed into the shield only to bounce off. The sword snaked out to slash the wings off of each crow. A few retreated cawing angrily. Katsumi tried a few times to hit the remainder. After numerous failures, the swordswoman finished off those on the ground. She grinned at Charlotte. "This will do just fine, Charlotte-san. I-"

The raven-haired woman's eyes grew wide. The corpses at her feet were wiggling. She danced away from them. What was this? The mobs weren't done yet? Was there a necromancer somewhere nearby? Or was the boss forming out of the corpses? That was an icky thought. Katsumi readied her sword. Whatever was coming, she'd be prepared. The swordswoman also angled herself to be in front of Charlotte. If the white-haired mage was support only, Katsumi would make the enemies come through her first.

A dark figure rose out of the ground. It appeared to be a mutated crow. Many times larger than an actual crow, it boasted limbs like a humanoid. Katsumi wished she had a heads up display. She was dying to know what the name of the creature was. Her mind worked quickly for a way to defeat the creature despite her curiosity. "Charlotte-san? Can you boost my attack power at all? I might be able to take it out with... one... strike." A loud scraping noise distracted the swordswoman. From around the corner, a scarecrow appeared. It was wielding a long scythe and glowed with infernal power. Katsumi looked at the weird crow thing. Guess that wasn't the boss after all.

"Anything you can give me, Charlotte-san, I'll gladly take." She pulled out the Henkan II. The silver hilt rapidly changed into a small wand. Wand in one hand, sword in the other, Katsumi faced down the approaching foes. She wasn't sure how to handle this situation. Running forward left Charlotte completely defenseless other than her shield. Whichever opponent she didn't face down would target the white-haired mage. Staying put wasn't a great option either. Both opponents could overwhelm her by attacking at the same time. Katsumi glanced over her shoulder at her partner. "Any suggestions?"

Post by Charlotte 12th November 2019, 3:01 pm

     Charlotte White Witch Rank A

It was pretty impressive to watch the other girl at work, even if Charlotte wasn’t exactly internally happy about the fact that those crows had to be killed. Obviously there was not much else they could do when under attack, it was just a flock of dangerous birds. But it was during times like this that her undying pacifism showed.

At least she managed to keep her ally safe. Even if there was something powerful enough to get through the barrier, it was constantly renewing itself so it could come back up even after being broken. But the white witch definitely did not count with the crows suddenly becoming one single horrific creature that was still very much hostile.

Even if Katsumi was guarding her along with the barrier, she couldn’t help but yelp rather girlishly, forcing her own pupil-less eyes to look away from the appalling creature. And even in such a heated moment, her partner still managed to give the girl’s mind something to focus on instead of the enemy. Truly she had all the respect in the world for the other girl.

To give her anything at all… focusing on all her available magic spells, she even completely missed the second enemy coming from around the corner. Her own body started glowing in a dazzling white light which slowly started expanding as a large magical circle formed beneath her feet, easily expanding below Katsumi as well.

I call down the carrier of good news and will - Euangelion!

Suddenly the magic circle duplicated, its copy flying high above them as two different chains emerged from it. One pure white while the other black, the spiraled around both girls and eventually connected with the circle on the ground, enhancing all that was between the two chains - Katsumi and Charlotte. Both of them could feel their strength returning and bodies growing resistant to attacks.

The warm winds of Spring, come early and help us!

A sudden warmth that would spread throughout their bodies, relaxing them and yet making their muscles stronger. While Charlotte was pretty bad when it came to physical activity, the other girl could surely feel her ability to move and overall speed rising quite a bit in the process.

And the card of the Wishing well, let us drink from thee!

And finally, one more spell that seemed to create a tarot card of sorts above the white witch’s head, pulsating out energy that started recovering magical supply of everyone in range. Something that she hoped would allow her partner to go all out without having to worry about running out of steam. But all of the spells she used put quite a strain on her body…

She shivered as something opposite to the white she was using until now manifested. A darkness of sorts, from within Charlotte. It flew out in an instant, like a wave of visible plague. And it spread to both the crow and the strange scarecrow reaper. The moment they made contact, numerous black crystals pierced their bodies, making them brittle and much more susceptible to attack.

Katsumi wasn’t affected by it at all, but Charlotte quickly fell to her knees and started coughing uncontrollably, her staff falling next to her as she covered her mouth with her hands. But that didn’t seem to help as a strange pure black viscous liquid flew between her fingers the moment she coughed it out. Almost like as if she was coughing out blood, but even more unnerving.

Off to the Pumpkin Patch! Empty Re: Off to the Pumpkin Patch!

Post by Katsumi 12th November 2019, 9:18 pm

Katsumi felt faster, stronger and more resilient. Charlotte had cast the perfect combination of spells. The black swordswoman was prepared for battle. However, her partner was coughing behind her. Katsumi had also heard the staff fall to the ground. Something had happened to the other Rune Knight. Maybe this was the consequence of her magic? Or more specifically, a consequence of aggressive action against someone with her magic. Katsumi couldn't figure out which. Her hand tightened on her sword. Charlotte was helpless right now. The raven-haired girl didn't want to leave her partner behind.

There were no spells in her arsenal which could attack both opponents at the same time. As both moved forward, Katsumi decided to simply go for it. She stuck her sword in the ground. It was within easy reach, just in case. Words spilled from her lips faster than humanly possible. "System Call. Generate Thermal Element. Form Element, bow shape. Invoke Conflagrant Flame Bow. Release Recollection." Her wand glowed red in response. A moment later it blossomed into a massive flaming bow. Katsumi set her feet, blading her body toward the enemy. The scarecrow would take this arrow. She pulled back on the string. An arrow formed. Upon release, the arrow grew becoming a screaming phoenix. Katsumi didn't wait.

The sword came out of the ground. The swordswoman was sprinting for the crow man. The creature's clumsy swipes were easy enough to dodge. Words bubbled forth once more. "System Call. Generate Cryogenic Element. Form element, Spear." Five small spears of ice formed around Katsumi's head. Her feet danced and skipped, dodging the creature's attacks. Her expression was one of extreme focus. The crow man stumbled once, stepping too far forward on its attack. Katsumi struck. "Discharge." The spears flew forward into the crow man's side. It bellowed in pain. With the creature distracted, Katsumi backed away.

The swordswoman once again placed herself between the enemy and her partner. "Are you alright?" The Rune Knight asked over her shoulder. Neither of their opponents had gone down. Not that either was focused on the girls. The scarecrow flailed about on fire. The crow man tried to extract spears of ice from its side. They had a little time. Katsumi tried to analyze her opponents. Which was weaker? Without a HUD, it was basically impossible. The Rune Knight sighed in frustration. This all was easier in a video game. She would have to guess and hope for the best. "If you can keep an eye on the scarecrow, I need a heads up when he's done flailing. If you can stall him at all, that would be helpful too." Katsumi said finally looking at Charlotte. The white-haired girl had some kind of black goop in her hands. The Rune Knight wrinkled her nose. What was that stuff? No time to dwell on it.

Katsumi touched her wand to her sword. "System Call. Generate Umbral Element. Adhere." Shadows leaked from the wand. They attached to the sword, making the weapon appear to dance in darkness. Satisfied with the result, Katsumi cast her next spell. "System Call. Generate Cryogenic Element. Form Element, whip shape. Invoke Frost Scale Whip. Enhance Armament" The wand elongated, becoming icy in disposition. Once it was long and sinuous, the ice whip split into four copies of itself all connected to the handle in Katsumi's hand. "Not my prefered weapon but..." A flick of her wrist caused the whip to snap loudly. "It'll do."

Katsumi charged into battle with the crow man once more. This time, she slipped in close to attack with her sword. When he swung, the petite girl danced away. Her wrist would flick, whipping the creature. It didn't take long for the terrible monster to collapse. Katsumi's arms trembled from exertion. Her body was reaching its limit already. Sweat stood out on her face. The swordswoman stumbled as she moved back toward Charlotte. "One... more, Charlotte. I'm... not sure... how much... more I can do." Katsumi heaved. She bent over, placing her hands on her knees. Her weapons were angled to keep from hurting anyone accidentally. It was clear Katsumi couldn't manage much more fighting. Not without serious consequences.

Off to the Pumpkin Patch! Empty Re: Off to the Pumpkin Patch!

Post by Charlotte 20th November 2019, 3:36 pm

     Charlotte White Witch Rank A

It seemed that they were in quite a bind here, primarily because of how useless Charlotte was when it came down to direct combat. She was excellent when it came down to supporting others or healing the wounded who just returned from the battlefield, but this? Both her offensive and defense were at a zero, more or less.

But at the same time, it seemed that Katsumi was not doing the best either. Looking at her, it felt like she was geared towards dealing with one stronger opponent rather than a group of them. If that were indeed the case, then they were completely outmatched here. And yet, the other girl seemed to depend on the white witch.

Even as she coughed out more of the black ink, her clothes and face stained with it, she felt a strange strength from inside of her body. It has been a while… since someone actually relied on her. Far too long, one could say. And although it felt like every bone in her body was about to shatter under the pressure from her own magic backlash, the grip on her staff tightened.

To keep that strange scarecrow creature at bay… that was her task. Putting the staff upright, she used it as a support to help herself get back up and then stared it down with her hollow white eyes. These spells were nothing short of experimental, probably not fully safe for her to use just yet. But they were necessary if they wanted to get out of here alive.

Taking a deep breath, she suppressed the urge to cough again, taking the staff into both of her hands and wielding it horizontally against her body. While she focused, the enemy approached, still flailing its somewhat rusted scythe relentlessly. But just as it was about to cut the girl, its entire form was suddenly pulled back.

A ball of pure white magical energy appearing several meters behind it, quickly sucking everything in range toward it like a vortex. It didn’t take much to pin the creature down with the spell, but it wasn’t one to last very long. Thankfully it seemed that Katsumi was done with the strange crow beast. But she looked considerably worse for wear.

Gulping out loud, Charlotte tried to sort everything in her head, looking a bit ragged herself with the inky substance covering her entire chin, hands, and the uniform. “Understood… please, give it your all!” Switching the staff’s position to be vertical, she slammed it into the ground, creating a large magical circle behind the both of them.

It was as if time itself flowed backward, the entirety of Katsumi’s body regenerating. All of her exerted stamina immediately returning, fatigue fading away. Soon enough, she would be returned into a state nearly identical to the one she was in when the fight started. And once that spell ended, another began.

Creating several white fissures in the ground that emanated pleasant energy, it would keep on regenerating the girl as long as she remained in the area. So even if she were to go all out and get injured by the enemy, she should remain safe and out of the threat of losing her actual life. Charlotte, on the other hand, wasn’t able to cast much more. Her legs and hands were visibly shaking, but she was doing her best to keep the rejuvenation spell going for as long as was necessary.

Off to the Pumpkin Patch! Empty Re: Off to the Pumpkin Patch!

Post by Katsumi 20th November 2019, 6:09 pm

Katsumi was impressed with Charlotte's ability to work under pressure. The white-haired mage looked to be near the end of her rope. The swordswoman couldn't blame her. This mission was supposed to be an easy one. These mini-bosses hadn't been expected at all. The raven-haired girl pressed a shaking hand against her thigh. Charlotte still fought regardless. Even with a handicap of not being able to directly attack. Katsumi pushed herself up. Thanks to her teammate, she found the strength to push onward. The spells Charlotte cast moments later helped as well. Katsumi felt ready to take on a mountain.

Fog began to curl around the edges of the battlefield. It lent a gloomy tone to the fight. The flames on the scarecrow threw large shadows onto the fog. Katsumi shivered. Fog was an ominous sign in most games. This time, she hoped it would remain simply fog. The swordsman snapped her whip. Charlotte's spell held the Scarecrow in place for now. It was an easy target. Once Charlotte's spell had fully rejuvenated the swordswoman, Katsumi charged. Her wrist snapped forward. The whip tore the scarecrow four new furrows. It was finished. Katsumi pulled her sword back. A shadow ball flew out, interrupting the attack.

"What now?" Katsumi asked leaping backward. The scythe cut through where she'd been a moment later. A cloaked figure stepped out of the gloom. A leering pumpkin sat upon its shoulders. Wicked talons popped from the end of its sleeves. Power oozed from this new opponent. Where was her HUD when she needed it? This new guy would probably register as black. Too high level for her current power. Katsumi continued to back up. The scarecrow followed after. Its scythe sizzled through the air. Maybe setting this monster on fire was the wrong idea.

The swordswoman watched the scarecrow. Its patterns were steadily predictable. She also kept an eye on the pumpkin thing. It was gearing up another shadow ball. Charlotte's shield was still in place. That might allow her to take the hit. The scarecrow drew its scythe back. Katsumi lunged. Her sword pierced its side. Pulling it back, she slashed through the scarecrow. The monstrosity screamed, collapsing at her feet. There was no time for celebration. The shadow ball collided with her side. Charlotte's spell flickered out and Katsumi winced. Her fingers touched her side. They came away bloody. Just great. Her body might hold up for a minute more at most. She'd strained it. Even with Charlotte's help, Katsumi was weakening rapidly.

Time to pull out her big spells. They wouldn't completely drain what remained of her mana but they'd come close. The pumpkin monster was striding toward her. No time to waste. "System Call. Generate Elements: Luminous, Aerial. Invoke Fragrant Olive Sword. Release Recollection." Her wand glowed. The air around Katsumi filled with golden leaves. Step one down. Next... the Henkan II flashed, switching from the wand into a slender blue-green sword. Both of Katsumi's swords began to glow red. The pumpkin monster raised a hand. It wanted to strike down the swordswoman. She grinned up at the creature. "Too late"

Katsumi unleashed everything on the Pumpkin King. Her swords flashed. The golden leaves slammed into the creature. Her body danced around it. Near the end of it, her knee gave out. Katsumi stumbled away from her foe. Not that it mattered. Her spells had made short work of the monstrosity. It crumbled into pieces, the pumpkin smashing against the ground. She dropped her weapons, collapsing onto her back. Red stained the side of her uniform. "I think I'll skip picking pumpkins, Charlotte. That made me want to stay far, far away from pumpkins." She chuckled softly. The Rune Knight was a little kooky with blood loss. "Can you drag me over to that circle again? I don't think my legs will carry me now."
