Name: Mercury Scim
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Birthday: December 18th
Sexuality: Straight (Not really sure, expresses more interest in books than people)
Special Characteristics: Wears large, round glasses.
Personality: Mercury's curiosity started practically when he was born. He learned to read before he could walk, and ever since he has adored books and the knowledge he gains from them. Even still, when he expressed interest in becoming a mage, his parents were apprehensive. While they were proud of his son for his obvious intellectual gifts, they worried that his magical talents might be used as a weapon of war. It was only with reluctance that they allowed him to become an apprentice to a magician calling himself the "Word Archmage". When Mercury returned from his training, only a year later, he had changed. His curiosity remained intact, but he had lost his excitement, his optimism for what he might find. He doesn't talk much about what happened at the Archmage's manor, but it's suspected that the youth found more than he'd bargained for.
Mercury is, overall, a peaceable fellow. He dislikes violence, and hence only carries a few offensive Words. He much prefers the company of books to people; while not entirely misanthropic, he is decidedly antisocial. His parents instilled in him a good sense of right and wrong, though his decisions are more often tactically driven than morally. He strikes many who meet him as stoic, even unfeeling, but in reality he’s just somewhat disconnected. He has a heart, he just chooses to live in his own head, in his vast collection of knowledge that he is ever seeking to expand.
In direct combat, which he generally avoids, he prefers to be on the outside casting in, helping any allies he has. He prefers to take orders than give them, though he has a good sense of strategy. Either way, though, having the fight taken to him is pretty much his worst nightmare. He only carries one offensive spell (Corrode), which is just as dangerous to him as it is to the enemy, so he sometimes spends a good amount of time running around trying to get the threat to go target someone else so he can cast his other, more helpful spells in peace. He hates being the center of attention, although if it has strategic merit for him to do so he may be willing to run around as a distraction (but he still won't like it).
On the subject of allies, that's about as close as Mercury gets to having actual "friends". He develops emotional attachments slowly if at all. That is not to say that he has no emotional connection to anyone, nor that he rejects such connections. He just prefers to put his other objectives first. For example, if it is imperative to his current objective that his allies remain alive, he will do everything in his power to save them. If there's more wiggle room than that, for the most part he lets people fend for themselves. However, if his team makes a decision he doesn't agree with, he will intervene. He will fight for what he believes is the correct course of action, which may not necessarily be the objective.
In general, he is indifferent to most other people. He tends to treat introductions more like business meetings than anything more casual. Out of habit, he makes mental notes about someone when he meets them, and keeps them as a sort of catalog of his known allies, and he remembers abilities long before he remembers personalities. However, there are exceptions. Within his cloak, he keeps a small, moleskin journal with notes he makes about certain people; those he considers friends. It is relatively rare for him to find someone worthy of being named in that journal.
Likes:
Books: Dude loves him a good book. Even when he's not digging for new Words, Mercury enjoys reading a good story. Looking for a gift? Give him a book.
Coffee: Mercury enjoys trying different types of coffee. He's drank so much of the stuff it hardly effects him any more, but he still enjoys the taste. He takes it with milk (not cream) and just a bit of sugar.
Riddles: Mercury can hardly resist a good riddle, and he's good at figuring them out. Really, anything that challenges his mind qualifies.
Dislikes:
Sleeping: To Mercury, sleep is a waste of time. He could be reading, or exploring, or just doing something OTHER THAN LAYING THERE LIKE A BUMP ON A LOG.
Insects: Insects destroy books, and there's nothing Mercury hates more than a destroyed books. He's not disturbed by bugs, or afraid of them, but he despises anything that crawls on more than four legs.
Repetitive noises: Metronomes, ticking clocks, any rhythmic noise is irritating to him. He'd much prefer talking or overt silence.
Motivations:
Curiosity: Mercury is a lover of knowledge, so he is constantly wanting to know more. His curiosity can drive him to do just about anything.
His Word Catalog: Not every Word has been found, and Mercury intends to find them. He has a journal that keeps track of every Word he's ever found and its effects.
Proving Himself to his Master: Mercury's old master, the Word Archmage, knew many words of power, and believed that knowledge should be kept secret. Mercury seeks to prove him wrong; to prove that the world is better for knowledge shared.
Fears:
Fire: Quite a rational fear for someone who carries around as much paper as he does.
Loss: Mercury fears losing things. Not misplacing, but having them destroyed or killed. He might not show it actively, but he does develop emotional attachment to certain people and things, albeit slowly, and is willing to risk his life for fear of losing them forever.
Heights: He tends to get extreme vertigo if he senses that he's in a high place. Cliffs, high towers, any of that.

Weight: 146 lbs
Hair: Messy, burgundy-colored hair

Underneath that, he wears a white, button-up, long-sleeved shirt, over-which he wears a sort of bandoleer that holds the three books he uses the most frequently.
