Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
“Boy, this is harder than it looks…”

Serilda actually couldn’t recall the last time she’d been to a festival and actually played any of the games. It was possible she never had before, or that it was so long ago as a child that she simply couldn’t recall it. She’d certainly attended a number of these events, but always as a noble or dignitary figure which always kept her busy with meeting people. She’d never stopped to consider participating in anything as an adult.

That had changed drastically now that Mythal, Grappa, and Jellisha were a part of her life. Mythal wouldn’t necessarily care about doing something like this one way or another if it were just the two of them. He probably would have gone with her if she’d expressed an interest if only to spend time with her, but he likely wouldn’t have gone out of his way for it either. But now that they had two young, excitable girls in their lives, almost everything about their day to day had been turned upside down. They went out and did things a lot more like the unofficial family they were.

So here they were, having come all the way to the capital of Fiore for the purpose of letting the girls have a fun day -- hopefully one that wouldn’t end in a fight or disaster of some kind, this time. Serilda was trying her hand at a bean bag tossing game, where the objective was to try and get one or more of the bags into three small holes that were worth different points. Not one for cheating, she was not utilizing her Void magic at all to help her aim, and was pleasantly surprised to find that she was, honestly, pretty terrible at this.

Victoria stood casually beside her with her arms crossed over her chest and a somewhat bored expression on her face. Unlike with Mythal and Lux, Serilda’s seal had been a bit easier to work with since the fiasco that had been their initial introduction to one another. The older woman still wasn’t a walk in the park and the two of them often got into disagreements, but for the most part Victoria had actually been adjusting surprisingly well to having lost to the field marshal. “You’re not tossing it hard enough,” the woman critiqued passively.

“Obviously.” Serilda said, barely containing the urge to roll her eyes. She offered one of the bags to Victoria as if offering to give her a chance to try the game if the Seal was so all-knowing about how to play to win it. The older woman scoffed at the notion of lowering herself to playing a mortal game, and Serilda shrugged. “Alright,” she said innocently, turning back to play. “I understand. Can’t be the Seal of Victory and lose a simple bag toss game.”

“Give me those,” the woman growled, snatching the bags from the noble woman. Serilda smirked lightly to herself and turned to look for Mythal and the girls to see how they were faring with whatever games they’d found to occupy themselves.

Festivals weren’t really Mythal’s thing. In fact, in the long list of things that Mythal didn’t subscribe to or actively seek out to take part in, festivals would be found near the top – right along with balls, galas and political events. But since becoming a parent – and at this point, it was something that he had to accept was real – he understood there were things he had to bring Grappa and Jellisha to. They were still relatively new to the world and even if they weren’t, they still had young, vibrant minds that liked to be stimulated and engaged. The events at the festivals was the perfect kind of place that would allow one to get that kind of involvement without needing to get too involved. It was a bit cramped; it was a seasonal festival after all. And as much as he would have liked to relax and take it easy, after the events during the summer solstice, he was a bit on edge. Last thing he wanted were some kind of Halloween sprites popping up and causing mischief where it didn’t belong.

He stood nearby the Exceeds, watching them as they played the games and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Despite his lack of interest in the events themselves, he was amused and happy that the Exceeds were having a good time. It wasn’t often that they got to relax and have a genuine day off so in a lot of ways, this kind of outing was needed. He smiled as he watched them partake in the festivities and then turned his gaze over to Serilda. She had taken up one of the other games – a game where she had to throw a bag at a target and try and hit it. She wasn’t using any magic and the great discovery from that was that she was absolutely terrible at aiming. He watched as she took careful appraisal of her target and then tossed, proving that her mastery in swordsmanship and other such merits did nothing for tossing bags. He chuckled, his gaze slyly moving back towards the woman as she found amusement rather than frustration in the game.

He’d been having relatively new thoughts lately, frankly since they had somehow become the coparents of two Exceeds. They were a team in most things before but now it seemed they had joined together completely to ensure that the girls – and themselves – were living their best, brightest lives. It was hard to imagine himself back where he was; when he had been practically a vagabond and a brigand. The mussy, messy, dirty man he had been before was a shadow compared to who he was today. And though she would never selfishly take credit for it, he knew that a large part of that had been her. Serilda Sinclair had made a large impact on his life that he hadn’t quite been ready for and now that she was in it, he couldn’t let her go. The rumblings of a more official commitment had begun to take root in his mind, strange sensations that he hadn’t ever cared to fathom before. He’d never seen himself being in love before but frankly, he’d never seen himself as a parent either. One step adjacent to that was husband… and in the long run, would that be so bad?

Planning for such an occasion wasn’t easy for people of sound mind – for Mythal, it was almost as easy as rewriting his entire genetic programming. He was terrified of asking people for help because, well, who did he trust? He supposed he could reach out to Gren or Branwen on what to do. His father had never been married as far as he knew though… so he seemed to be the lacking party. Branwen would probably get great delight in the fresh ammunition to tease him with. But as he was one of the only married men that the Darkness King even knew, it seemed as sound a strategy as ever. Now there was the case of finding a time and place to get there discreetly.

He’d been so caught up in his mind that he hadn’t heard the loud, annoying chattering next to the side of his head. It wasn’t until a glowing, translucent hand waved in front of his vision that he snapped out of his trance and turned his gaze to look upon Lux. The Seal of Light looked more than a little annoyed – probably because he had been ignored for several minutes. Mythal almost kept up the ruse, just to twist the knife a bit longer. “The hell is it, Lux?” he muttered, turning back to check on the Exceed girls.
“I was asking you why you’re just standing there staring at Serilda like a creep,” the Lightbringer repeated his question, jabbing a thumb towards the Field Marshall. He made no attempt to lower his voice, so that his brethren and the Voidwalker could easily hear him.

“None of ya damn business, Lux,” Mythal said easily, waiting until Serilda turned to shoot her a wink and a smirk. He knew that she would be just as amused at his attempts to wring Lux out to dry.

The Lightbringer glanced over at Serilda with an arched brow before turning back to Mythal with a smirk of his own. “Oh, I get it,” he said with a low chuckle. “You’re making googly eyes so you two can run off and have some private time. I get it; you need some space from the kiddies so you can bump uglies. Don’t worry – I promise that Victoria and I will stay here and play baby sitters,” he nodded assuredly, though he very obviously crossed his fingers.

“The only one I need space and privacy is from you, ya bastard,” Mythal retorted, huffing gently at the Seal. “Yer the one that’s constantly in my head or… in my soul, whatever. I can barely get a moment’s rest with you hangin’ around.”

“Excuse you; I am a source of constant enjoyment and support in your life. How dare you accuse me of being a nuisance,” the Seal attempted to act offended. But his face betrayed just how proud he was to hear how annoying he had been in the Slayer’s life. “Just for that, no candy for you.”

“I don’t need no damn…” Mythal started to protest when someone caught his eye. In between two of the tents sat a man, who had been nearly invisible against the backdrop of the festival for his minimal activity. Perhaps he hadn’t been there before entirely. He was a short man with only one eye; the other was covered with a patch, signifying some kind of accident from before. Despite his gnarled look, there was no air of malevolence about him – just curiosity. Like a dandelion in a field of roses. He sat on a stump, glancing around idly, with a bag of trophies not unlike the others in other games.

Mythal wasn’t sure why but he felt the need to approach, if only to investigate. Slowly he walked up to the man, the singular gaze rising up to meet the Darkess Slayer’s. “You alright, pal? Those uh… your trophies for winnin’?” Mythal asked, gesturing to the bag. He tried to sound as… friendly as possible, though he sounded more confused than anything.

The one eyed man looked him up and down slowly and carefully before he reached into the pack and pulled out a single trophy. He held it tight in his grip, his gaze narrowing slightly as he faced Mythal completely. “What belongs to you, but gets used by others more?”

The Darkness King stood there, silent for several beats. Was this guy… asking him a riddle? Was he some kind of game peddler with an awful little tree stump as his set up? He couldn’t imagine a lot of children were running over to play his game; most parents wouldn’t allow it, no doubt. Already he knew that he wouldn’t let Grappa and Jellisha near him without Mythal or Serilda being present beside them. Yet again, he didn’t seem like an all around bad person. His spirit felt… neutral, if anything. And it was an honest question.

So what did belong to him but got used more by others? His brow furrowed gently as he pondered it. It couldn’t be something material; house, magic – that kind of stuff didn’t make sense. But it was still something that technically belonged to him. So it had to be something designated but not in a way that he was expecting it to be. He lifted his head slightly to look at the man again. “My title,” he said simply, if only for the sake of trying. His rank as General was often addressed by others, though he rarely called himself such. The whole ‘Darkness King’ thing was something he had been ranked as by at least one denizen of Kingdom Darkness and would be a title he’d never address himself as.

The man blinked once before he held out the trophy for him, his grip loosening. Mythal stared at the trinket for a moment before taking it with his hand, looking it over carefully. “Are… ya sure?” he asked, now more confused than before. The one eyed man nodded and picked up his pack, slinging it over his shoulder and heading deeper into the crowded festival grounds.

And all Mythal could wonder was… had he been right?

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
It was both amusing and vindicating to see that Victoria was just as bad at this bag tossing game as Serilda was. The frown on the older woman’s face continued to furrow deeper and deeper with each missed shot, a low growl of frustration coming from her throat. “You’re not tossing it hard enough,” Serilda told her with a devious smirk and a dry tone, payback for Victoria’s own earlier critiques.

Victoria didn’t take it so well, shooting the field marshal a murderous glare that only caused Serilda to chuckle. She was more than content to sit and watch the seal struggle, but Lux’s obnoxious voice spoke up, drawing her attention back to him and Mythal. She hadn’t quite caught whatever the seal of light had said. Just her name and something to do with being a creep? She frowned in confusion and suspicion, but Mythal readily made a quip back at Lux and offered her a wink and a smirk. She grinned lightly at him, blue eyes dancing at the knowledge that whatever was going on, Mythal was probably just giving Lux a hard time. The lightbringer certainly looked frustrated.

The truth was, Serilda was completely unaware of the recent thoughts that Mythal had been having regarding their relationship. The Voidwalker had of course given passive thought to the possibility of the two of them getting married someday, but it seemed like a conversation that would probably freak Mythal out. Not that it was really his fault, given what they now knew about his genetics, but still. She didn’t want to put any kind of pressure on him. He had enough being one of her generals, but if he married her he would also have to accept responsibility as a duke and become a noble, which… she didn’t really see him going for. Plus, all things considered they hadn’t really been together that long. Serilda had absolutely zero doubts about their relationship, but she had been bred to always be conscious of how others viewed her, so she was uncertain if they’d been dating long enough to really discuss something like that anyway.

And honestly, being married wouldn’t really change their relationship, anyway. What Serilda had mostly been contemplating lately was coming out to her parents and family with exactly how close the two of them were. Her parents knew they were dating. Hell, her mother knew they were sexually active and had been for a while. They hadn’t told her father yet, but he wasn’t stupid and a part of her got the feeling that he assumed they were basically living together already. The topic was almost always avoided whenever they went to visit, which meant her dad either was completely oblivious, didn’t want to know, or perhaps just… didn’t care enough to feel the need to comment on it. She was an adult after all, and a widow. Maybe they both just felt that she had the right to make her own decision about it. But the truth was that eventually Serilda would inherit the dutchy and the title, and that also meant that, eventually, the two of them would have to have that conversation -- she just wasn’t aware that he was already contemplating the possibility on his own.

“Ah ha! Insufferable mortal passtime.” Serilda’s attention turned back to Victoria, who had apparently managed to beat the bag toss game, though it had taken her several tries. The seal of victory looked quite smug as she accepted the two trophies she was handed. “Your turn,” she told the Voidwalker expectantly. “Do not let this child’s game best you. We have a reputation to uphold.”

Shaking her head, Serilda handed the game master more jewel and received another round of the bean bags, going back to tossing them herself. Even though she didn’t say it, she had to beat the game now that Victoria had shown her up by doing so. She didn’t need to win at everything she did, but there was a spirit of friendly competitiveness in her that wanted to at least complete what she’d set out to achieve. Serilda was just starting to get the hang of the game and find a groove when Victoria spoke up once more and completely threw her off her concentration.

“So, why don’t you and Mythal sleep together anymore?”

Serilda’s bean bag went way far to the left of where she had meant to aim, her swing thrown off entirely by the unexpected and extremely personal question. “That is absolutely none of your business..!” she chastised the seal in a hushed tone, her face red as a beet as she looked around to see if anyone had overheard the inquiry. Thankfully, no one seemed to be paying attention to them, which was just as well because it seemed that Victoria wasn’t done asking about it.

The older woman shrugged. “I’m just saying. You two are dating and have been together for a long while, but your physical attention toward one another seems to be lacking. You both are so poured into your work with the Rune Knights that you don’t make that kind of time for each other anymore. It’s not healthy.”

“Since when do you care about the health of my relationship with Mythal?” Serilda growled, doing her best to ignore Victoria and dodge around the question. She was suddenly hyper focused on the game before her, determined to win if only so they could get away from all these people that might pick up on what was being discussed.

“Despite what you may want to believe, it would benefit neither of us for me to disregard your health on any level: physically, emotionally, intellectually. I need you at your peak at all times if you are going to be useful to me. Besides, you forget who you’re speaking with. What kind of seal of conquest would I be if I didn’t honor sexual victories?” The older woman gave Serilda a wicked little smirk, golding eyes peering at her from the side.

The Voidwalker’s blush increased tenfold. Victoria..! Boy was this embarrassing! Serilda didn’t even know what to say, she was so flustered.

“Is it my and Lux’s fault? I can understand that. A lot of my previous hosts have had that same reservation, but if the two of you need that kind of private time I can certainly busy myself elsewhere for a while. Granted I can’t make that same promise for Lux, but--”

“We are not having this conversation.” Thankfully, she was so honed on the game now that she started doing much better at it, and with her final word of putting her foot down she managed to throw the last bean bag in the hole, winning the game. The perplexed game master gave the flushed Serilda two trophies before the Voidwalker walked away from Victoria and toward Mythal and the girls, eager to be anywhere that didn’t involve having to acknowledge the conversation, which had left Victoria grinning like a cheshire cat.
