    Completed A New Start

Post by Vance McBride 21st August 2020, 8:25 am

Damian sat at a two-seated, round oaken table outside the Center for Immigrant Wizard Resources in Clover. A fair sized stack of pamphlets, flyers, posters, and the like were spread across the table's surface. One thumb between his teeth in deep consideration, he thumbed through the most interesting of the guild pamphlets: Silver Wolf. The only one to seem to have a strong desire for intellectual pursuit, mixed with an enticing amount of treasure hunting as well, it had been the one to jump out at Damian as his most likely choice. His eyes scanned over a picture of a snow covered mountaintop, and a blue, ethereal wolf with interest.

Dark guilds were not among the pamphlets for obvious reasons, but he had been "scouted" by one or two both in his home country, and every country he passed through on his way here. Some such about his "dark and storied" lineage getting around their information networks. Mostly it annoyed him to be accosted so often for something ridiculous like that. He was his own person, not his ancestor, and foreboding magic or not he wasn't interested in being a criminal.

Not that the legal guilds held much interest either. He was all for helping those in need and protecting the weak and such, but being at the beck and call of a political organization seemed unpleasant to say the least. Thus had his eyes settled on independent guilds, and to the only two options for his pondering. West Fiore Trading Company could be interesting, but he had heard rumor of a...darker element to them he wasn't sure he could get behind.

Bouncing one knee in energetic consideration, he set down the open Silver Wolves pamphlet and let out a contemplative sigh. While not nearly as boringly tedious as the paperwork to immigrate here and gain citizenship, simply coming to a decision on the guild to apply for had become more work than he originally thought as well. He eyed the location of the Silver Wolf guild hall and cross checked it with the country's map. "Hmmm... a forest, a mountain range with multiple concurrent weather types. Could be a lot of interesting insects there..." His eyes seemed to light up almost literally as he pointed this out to himself.

Picking up the pamphlet once more, he reread it slowly. How often had they been called to protect the halls? These positions in Silver Wolf as well.... he wondered if taking up two separate titles was possible. Both Hunter and Scholar seemed enticing in their own regards. Now if only there was a representative he could easily contact to discuss his questions....

Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
    and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
Mercury found herself in Clover quite often these days. Ever since she and Vandrad had met with Mythal and Serilda, with the two men working on building their long-lost-brothers relationship, the Rune Knight leaders made quite a bit of effort to invite the two independent mages to various gatherings to spend time with them. While Vandrad’s brother and his fiancee lived primarily in Era, Clover was where Serilda grew up and was where the lands of her family’s duchy were located, so whenever anything interesting was happening in Clover they made sure to reach out to Vandrad and Mercury to be a part of it. The last major gathering had been a city wide rave, a wild event that Mercury was really the only one out of the four that had been overeager to be there. Vandrad had grumbled most of the time, particularly in lieu of the pranks she had pulled on him during… but he’d gotten to beat the snot out of a wanna-be ruffian, so that had helped his mood considerably, and in the end it was a fun memory for all.

But her exposure to Serilda had opened her knowledge a bit more about the town of Clover itself, which served as the annual meeting place for all the legal guild masters. She had been curious about the hall for a number of reasons, and had thus elected to visit. While the main hall itself wasn’t open to the public, or even mages from other guilds not fully acknowledged nor fully condemned by the Magic Council, there was a section of the building that advertised itself as a center for wizards to come and learn more about some of the guilds in and around Fiore. There was a lot of resources and information available there in the form of pamphlets, business cards, and other various “impulse grab” forms of media. Surprisingly, not all of it was just about the legal guilds. There was actually some limited information available for some of the independent guilds as well, including Silver Wolf.

Curious, she plucked one of the brochures out of a holder on the wall and opened it up to see what was there. The information presented within seemed pretty accurate and straightforward, doing respectable justice to their mission to obtain, study, and preserve items of cultural and historical interest, both magical and mundane. Given that Silver Wolf didn’t wholly advertise their mechanisms to the public, there weren't any details present about some of the more in depth goings on of the guild, but it was enough to spark interest in any whose attraction lied in the same fields. While it didn’t have any pictures of anyone from the guild, it was at least up to date enough that it included Leona’s name as the guildmaster, as well as listing Mercury, Aspen, and Theo as the current aces. She smirked a little, amused to see her name in the document.

Slipping the item back inside the display, she turned and looked around a little, this time studying the people who were present. Some of them were present in small groups, going through the paperwork together and probably comparing the guilds they found interesting to see which ones appealed to them more. Others were doing the same thing by themselves, off in a corner with a handful of brochures, reading through them and trying to decide. Eventually, her gaze set on one such lone individual with a slip in his hands that looked like it was the Silver Wolf packet. He looked to be about her age, with long dark hair and tanned skin. Unlike the others, he was the only one with a single brochure before him, and he seemed pretty invested in reading it over and over.

Having never been a shy individual, Mercury wasted no time in strolling right up to the young man. “Silver Wolf, eh?” she asked, a small but friendly smile on her face. She had short lavender colored hair that swept to one side of her head, and bright emerald eyes that seemed to have a permanent glint of mischief in them. She had light skin and a small frame, standing just shy of five and a half feet. A pink, sleeveless shirt sat over top a black bra, with large gaps from the armpits that left her sides bare. One strap sat haphazardly off her shoulder, covering part of a series of gear shaped tattoos that ran up her left arm and onto her neck. Her legs were clad in a simple pair of worn looking jeans with a pair of black leather boots to top of her feet, and around her hips were a number of various leather pouches as well as a holstered oversized pistol. She smiled down at him where he sat, with all the confidence in the world of a woman that wasn’t in the least bit intimidated at approaching random strangers.

“You into all that sciency research and stuff?”

Damian looked up from the Silver Wolf pamphlet, tried, and failed to keep his eyes from widening to nearly double size in surprise. A rather....distractingly attractive woman who was presumably about his age had approached him. She, like several women he had come across since he had arrived in Fiore, dressed far more errr... openly than the women of his homeland. By no means was that something he opposed, as he mostly found the traditional garb in his home a tad...archaic. But it was distracting for a young man who rarely saw much skin outside the pages of a magazine.

He tried his best not to allow his eyes to linger anywhere inappropriate, but couldn't help himself with the tattoos and gun. He found them both rather intriguing, having not seen many non-religious tattoos and literally never having seen a gun in person. He wondered if the gear tattoos were ornamental, had some deep significance, or paired with the presumably magical nature of her weapon. Surely she must be a wizard having recognized the guild he was looking into and carrying such a weapon. 'What kind of magics would she cast with such a weapon?' he wondered. 'Presumably firing spells at targets from a distance, but would they be projectiles or energy or something else altogether?'

"Silver what now? O-oh, right. W-why yes, actually. Though I prefer to learn more...," his focus wavered momentarily "...hands on. Field study and the like." He tapped the pamphlet with his off hand. "I was just wondering if they might have a sort of...dual position for a Hunter and Scholar." He gave her a broad, hopeful grin. "You wouldn't happen to know about that would you?" He didn't imagine she would unless by some broad stroke of luck she herself happened to be a member, but he wasn't one to turn down conversation with nearly anyone. Surely not someone so... intriguing.

It seemed that this young man, whoever he was, was the type that wasn’t great at hiding his facial expressions around women he found attractive. Poor thing. That was always an unfortunate trait to have around Mercury, who took a great amount of delight in teasing people and pushing their buttons. He turned to look up at her and his eyes went wide in shock as though he were surprised by her approach. A moment later he was looking her over, taking in her tattoos and her weapon much like a lot of people did, though she didn’t miss the subtle flick in his gaze that betrayed he was having an interesting time trying to be respectful in where he set his sights. For her part, Mercury’s cool and confident demeanor didn’t change, and she simply let him have the moment he needed to process her approach, continuing to smirk playfully at him until he was able to find his voice.

He stammered for a moment before confirming that he was, indeed, looking into the Silver Wolf guild. It seemed his reservation was that he preferred hands on studies, being out in the field, and wasn’t sure which branch would fit him best or if he could be a part of more than one. He was smart enough, despite his momentary awkwardness, to recognize that she had approached him for a reason and asked if she had any information that might shed light on what he was looking into. “I know a little,” she told him playfully, her grin widening at his own as he finally managed to smile. Offering him a hand to shake, the woman introduced herself. “Mercury Arseneault. I’m an ace for Silver Wolf, in charge of the Scholar department. Mind if I take a seat?”

Presuming he didn’t protest her joining him, she’d plop her ass down in the chair across from him. Leaning back comfortably, she set one of her legs up on the surface of the table and crossed her other one over it, her boots hanging respectfully off the side so she could recline without getting the table grimy or shoving her feet in the man’s face. Her hands went behind her head and she told him, “You shouldn’t really worry too much about that. The various branches have their own focus, but at the end of the day we’re all guildmates and we do what we can to help each other out. Picking a branch doesn’t keep you from being involved with the work of any of the other branches; it just means that, should something needful or pressing comes up in your field, that’s where your attention should be prioritized. I spend as much time out in the field as I do down in the labs. It just comes down to where your interests lie the heaviest.”

She waved a beckoning hand to him. “What else you got for me?” Mercury asked him, opening herself up for any other questions he might have.

Damian's mouth went agape and he was once again bug eyed in surprise as she told him her name. Looking back at the pamphlet he saw her name under the Ace's subsection. Now if that wasn't the exact stroke of unbelievable luck he had thought she might be mere moments before, he wasn't sure what would qualify. Hell, she was even the Ace specific to the department he was interested in. His mind sped up with the possible questions he could ask, to the point he didn't even really register her asking if she could sit. Not that he would ever say no to begin with.

When he snapped out of it she had already sat and begun telling him about the branches, laying to rest the worries for him about choosing. If he could choose to come and go as he pleased as long as there wasn't a pressing scholarly concern then his choice was easily made for him. Besides, if a concern of the kind came up that they'd require his expertise specifically he'd probably already be obsessed with helping in the first place. Excellent, excellent. Scholar it was.

As she offered to answer anymore questions he fairly exploded with an out pour of them. "I noticed a note about the importance of protecting the guild hall, but not why? I would assume every guild's members are expected to do the same, but none of them have it as an explicit tenant for joining. What makes Silver Wolves different? How often does this duty come up for those who aren't the part of the Guardian department? As a Scholar what are the foremost duties and how do those play out on the average day? Also, not guild related but what kind of magic do you do with your gun?!" He finished asking all his questions in the space an average person might take three breaths.

When his thoughts caught up with his mouth he realized he had neither shaken her hand when offered, nor given his own name. Seeking to rectify this he extended his own hand to her, regardless of the fact of her own were now supporting her head. "Apologies for the rudeness! My name is Damian Beckett, newly immigrated from Desierto to learn and expand upon my relatively newfound magic!" His eyes gleamed warmly and his grin might hurt those sensitive to bright light, such was he beaming. If he had a trace of shame about his status as an immigrant or a weak mage, the greatest of socialites would find themselves hard pressed to see it.

The young man was utterly flabbergasted when Mercury introduced herself, and even as she took a seat and started getting into the branch information, she could already recognize the starry look in his eyes. It was one she’d seen in a lot of other new recruits before, those who were truly inquisitive scientists at heart and wanted nothing more than to pour themselves right into the field. He was bound to have more questions, which was why she had opened the floor up for him to cast them her way.

Mercury was expecting a lot more inquiries, but even she was unprepared for the vomit of words that the dark haired man deposited at her feet. He asked an easy half a million questions all within the same breath, causing Mercury to blink lightly at him with a surprised but entertained look. Only after he got all his questions out did he stop to realize that he hadn’t returned the gesture of introducing himself and proceeding to do so, providing Mercury with the name of Damian Beckett, from Desierto. “Desierto?” she asked him with interest. “I’ve been there before. Took a job in the area a few months back, and it was quite the experience. Pretty big climate difference from where the guild is located up in the mountains. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Damian. Hope you’re not intimidated by the snow and cold.”

She cast a teasing grin at him, then continued on to answer his other questions. “So, Silver Wolf differs from other guilds in the sense that there’s a lot more people at the guildhall at any given point in time than there usually are at other guilds. This is because we have a side business that attracts a lot of guests and patrons. See, the guildhall was built on top of a series of natural hot springs up in the Phoenix Mountains. We built around them so we could utilize them, creating our own personal spa and bathhouse that is open to non-members. There’s also a restaurant and an entire wing with guest rooms for people to rent. Since we want to be as responsible with this business as possible, we ensure that we have a branch of members dedicated to keeping the hall and its occupants, both guests and packmates, safe and secure. Plus, it’s not unheard of to run into the odd group of vulcans up in the mountains, and they can be quite pesky and destructive if left to their own devices.

“Defender duties really don’t come up all too often. As an independent guild, we mostly try to keep to ourselves without getting on anyone’s bad side, so we don’t really have any enemies which is how we prefer things. There are also precautions set in place that deter ill intentioned persons from even being able to reach the guildhall. If anyone is trying to find our building or any of our members for hostile reasons, they’ll simply wind up lost in the woods and ice. So there’s not a whole lot of external threats. However, shit still happens. Experimenting can be dangerous and oftentimes some of us put our lives and bodies on the line in the name of science.” The mischievous glint in her eyes spoke to how often she herself had been guilty of that. “The defenders protect us, even from ourselves sometimes. But in general it’s not something that comes up on a daily or even weekly basis, and as such wouldn’t interfere too much with your duties if you went with one of the other two branches.

“As far as the scholar branch goes, we’re the ones who get to have the most fun in my opinion. We’re the ones that get to play with all the fun treasures that the hunters bring back. We analyse things, testing them for their functions and capabilities, and compile the research together to add to our expansive library. We do a lot of organizing, categorizing, deconstructing and reconstructing, experimenting with what we know to see if we can improve upon what’s already been established. In essence, we’re the tinkerers of the guild.”

So far she had yet to miss a single one of his questions, despite how quickly he had churned them out at her. Mercury processed, retained, and retrieved information much quicker than the average human. This was primarily because, as much as she looked human, she wasn’t. One would never be able to tell by looking at her that she had wires for muscles, oil for blood, metal for bones. Her brain operated as, and essentially was, a computer. However, her alien genetic makeup was unlike anything that existed on Earthland. She was a race that was both wholly cybernetic and wholly organic, which meant that unless someone cut her open and exposed her innards, she was completely indistinguishable from any other human wandering the planet.

Which was exactly how she liked it.

“There’s nothing magical about what I do,” she told him simply. It wasn’t a complete lie, though it also wasn’t the complete truth. Mercury did in fact have magic but it was a relatively new development, and one that had quickly become a closely guarded secret for her. There was only one person that knew she had real magic, and it had taken him months of constant exposure to learn what she really was. But at the end of the day, her magic really only heightened skills she already had. “There are items with magical properties that I use from time to time, but I’m basically little more than an engineer.”

Taking Mercy out of its holster, she offered the overly large pistol to him hilt first. He would be able to surmise by looking at it that it was an extremely advanced, almost futuristic, piece of technology that gave off no magical aura. There were unmarked buttons along the handle that hinted at multiple functions the weapon likely had that he could reasonably assume allowed the weapon to discharge different types of ammunition. “That’s all science,” Mercury said with a small smirk. And in this case, she truly wasn’t bending the truth. She’d crafted Mercy long before coming to Earthland and discovering the existence of magic, so the pistol truly was an honest creation of her own hands. “What about you? What kind of magic or other talents do you have that you’d make use of with Silver Wolf?”

A small laugh escaped Damian's lips at the mention of possible discomfort at the guild. "No worries there, for some reason I have always been rather....out of place in the intense heats of my home country. I suppose I'm more adept at surviving in those temperatures than average, but I surely never enjoyed them! I am sure the cool temperatures will be a welcome change comparatively." Not that he wouldn't have to adjust to cold weather survival he was sure, but hopefully he would at least be comfortable once he had. "Neat to meet someone familiar with my country so soon though, I was sure I would be more out of place than this here in Fiore. It is definitely a far cry from the small tourist trap of a village I come from after all!"

Damian leaned forward with particular interest as Mercury began to answer his other questions. Were she not leaned back it might have been uncomfortably close. As it was he was basically hovering over one of her boots to stare intently at her as she spoke. He made no attempt to answer any of her questions until the end, for fear of running over her explanations. He had a...bad habit of doing that when he got excited. The mention of a spa and bathhouse peaked his interest somewhat, having not had what one would call conventional bathing by most countries standards in his village. Surely this would be a more pleasant experience than the dangers of bathing in a river tended to be.

As she laid his concerns and curiosity to rest about the defense of the guild and its' effects on the scientific pursuits of its' members, he breathed a small sigh of relief. Seems this was the right choice for him! Putting his life on the line for science might scare away some, but he had quite literally nearly died for exactly that reason several times already. Hell, it was how he had awoken to his magic potential. He rubbed the back of his wrist somewhat where a scar should be from the Ethernanon Deathstalker sting he took most recently. He swore sometimes he could still feel its' stinger in there somehow. But of course he knew that wasn't possible, even for a magically inclined insect, right?

He had to physically halt an attempt to rub his hands together at the thought of all the interesting and wonderful magical items he would get to test as a scholar of the Silver Wolves. Thankfully Mercury offered him something else to fill his hands: her gun. Taking the weapon from her with ginger reverence, he leaned back as he turned it over and over in his hands to inspect it on all sides and angles. It was as she said, a plain weapon that emanated no magic...at least as far as his minor sense could pick up. Though it did have a number of buttons along the handle that he presumed would perhaps allow different firing modes or perhaps ammo types. He could only guess at the potential, as his expertise was of the more...natural sciences. Heavy technology was not something was likely to find in a tourist trap in the midst of a desert after all.

He handed the weapon back carefully, unsure of how gingerly he needed to handle it. Imagine his embarrassment if he accidentally discharged the weapon in a civilian area without cause. Boy would his face be...as close to red as it was capable of getting. He eyed Mercury with unabashed curiosity and consideration. He had read about non magical citizens who, through martial talent, training, and wit, could use magical artifacts and weapons to fight on par with wizards. But to be confronted with an Ace of a Fioran guild who did so was...intriguing. Truly intriguing, indeed.

At her prompting of what he could bring to the table, he gave her a wide, toothy grin. While surely by no means powerful magic compared to what she was likely used to dealing with, he had no small amount of fascination and pride in his newfound abilities. Considering how many times he was stung in the process of forming them, many would say that was fair. His skin took on a sickly purple-green glow as he exerted his magic to change his physical form. After a second or two the glow faded.

From behind his back climbed the chitinous tail of the scorpion with which he was so familiar. The stinger curled up over one shoulder to give Mercury a clear view of its' lacquer brown sheen with a green point at the end. A small bead of venom welled at the far most tip for but a second before he dismissed the magic. "Pretty cool, eh? Insect Takeover Magic! Took a lot of studying, and being stung, but I dare say it was worth the pain and effort, wouldn't you?" He gave a rather disarmingly boyish grin before continuing. "I'm definitely no stranger to risking myself for the wonders of scientific intrigue. What do you say, think I can make the cut at Silver Wolf?" His eyes gleamed as he leaned forward again.

Mercury wasn’t at all worried or concerned about Damian discharging the weapon. Even if he tried, he wouldn’t be able to. The surface of the gun was biologically coded to her unique fingerprints and DNA, meaning that it would only fire or perform any of its functions for her and her alone. If anyone else were to attempt to use it, it would revert to its current setting and lock its safeties on. Thus, the young man was perfectly safe to handle the pistol at his preferred comfort, and she took it back as casually as it had been handed to him. He asked no questions about it, but Mercury could imagine based on the short interaction with him thus far that he was likely either being polite in not trying to ask too much, or simply was distracted by her own question about his abilities.

He gave her a somewhat goofy but confident grin, drawing her interest. As she watched, his skin began to glow a strange purple green color. The aura lasted for only a moment or two before fading, and nothing appeared to have happened. At least, until a tail resembling that of a scorpion lifted itself up from behind his back, threatening to drip a single drop of poison onto the table. “Ooooo…” she said, humming with appreciation as the extra limb faded out of existence. His magic, he explained, was called Insect Takeover. Mercury was well aware of takeover magic by this point, though she’d yet to witness such abilities up close like this before now. And according to him, he’d earned it himself by allowing himself to be stung by scorpions and other bugs, which meant that like many of the other scholars in Silver Wolf he was quite adept and willing to put the adventures and desires of science before himself.

She grinned back at him. “That’s a pretty nifty skill set you got there, I won’t lie. I’d be curious to see what other tricks you’ve got at some point. But yes, Damian, I actually do think that you’d fit in quite well with our little guild. So what do you say? Want to come join the pack? All we’d have to do is get you up the mountain, go over a couple quick expectations that we hold our members to, get you stamped, and you’d be all set. Depending on what affairs you have to get in order, we could get you set up and official before the day is even over.”

Damian nearly flew out of his chair with a whoop of excitement. Knocking several of his papers off the table without any apparent notice. "You kiddin'? Give me no more than five minutes and I can be back at this very spot with what little I brought!" Reaching under the pile of pamphlets remaining on the table, he fished out his rather plain brown leather wallet and stuffed it in one pocket. Aside from it he had brought next to nothing to this country. His parents weren't much for worldly possessions and the like, and depending on the item in question he wasn't particularly either. So he had what money he had saved up working at his parent's inn, several changes of clothes, legal papers, a magnifying glass, and a backpack to carry things in. Aside from that he had brought nothing, planning on amassing what tools and fortune he needed to pursue research once he joined a guild.

Beginning to glow the same sickly greenish-purple glow as before, he turned away from Mercury to allow her to view another takeover spell. She seemed genuinely intrigued after all, and that was a rarity he ALWAYS took advantage of. Out of his back spread a pair of translucent, veined wings that almost seemed to have a papery texture to them. Giving a grin that just oozed the fact he was pleased with finding someone who liked his magic, he beat the wings in rapid succession and took off over the nearest building in the direction of his hotel. The sound upon take-off was sure to be.... less than pleasant, considering the volume cicadas tend to get up to. But at least it wouldn't be as abjectly painful or downright deafening as it was when he made an effort to use them in that regard.

As he flew over the town of Clover a feeling of...accomplishment and joy washed over him. One part being the feeling of flight, as he still hadn't gotten over the novelty of that experience. The rest was the quite honestly shocking fact that he had been in the country not even a full week, yet he had already been directly invited to join a guild by no less than one of their Ace's! What were the odds of that?! He fairly began drooling at the thought of the scientific research potential, and potential to spread the good word on insects, that he was about to have with the Silver Wolves. He could just taste the sweet air of the new biome filled with wonderful insects and plants and hnnnnnng!

Landing with a rather intimidating buzz that made the pedestrians passing his hotel jump several feet in every which way, he swept through the front doors. Accidentally ignoring the front desk staff as he went right on by to the hallway leading to his room, he collected his meager possessions, and left as quick as he came. Luckily, as thick as he was, he had prepaid for his room and had not just accidentally committed a crime by not paying on his way out. Like that he flew haphazardly back to where he and Mercury had been sitting. True to his word it had taken him all of three of four minutes to return with his backpack over one shoulder. With a doofy grin on his face, and much to the appreciation of the passerby bothered by his atrociously loud landing, he dismissed his wings as he faced Mercury. "Ready whenever!"
