Shen raised his hand, looking up towards the sky, shielding his eyes from the sun. It was what some people would call an idyllic summer day, too bright, too hot for the shut-in, the young man squinting in an attempt to get a better view of the massive plateau ahead of him, already dreading the impending walk up the endless stairs that led up to his destination. It had to be, someday, though the young man hadn't known that it would be so soon. A job, the thing he would dread even more than those stairs. He had led a quiet, peaceful existence, but alas. Money wouldn't make itself, sadly. Well, or maybe it would? He didn't quite know, actually. was it possible to learn some kind of money magic? That would require him to know if he could even use magic first. The guild he wanted to join would probably not appreciate an abuse of such magic either, he figured. Oh well. It now dawned on him that the first option he had chosen as an ideal career path would perhaps not necessarily be the best of them all, but ... he had made it all the way from Cedar to Era already. Would it really be worth it to just go back now? Not quite, the young man thought, sighing lightly before eyeing the stairs. This would really be a trip. Why couldn't he just stay inside and chill? This was already proving to be a hassle ...

Several minutes later and severely out of breath Shen had finally reached the level top of the plateau, several passerby's stopping with raised eyebrow, staring at the young man that was nearly collapsing onto the ground. "Ugh ... phew ... wow ... that was ... something else ... whew", trying to lift himself up, his hands on his knees, sweat glistening on his face. He took a look around, sheepishly acknowledging the several pairs of eyes centered on him. "A-ahh ... I'm f-fine, everything's fine, sorry, just passing through", the word's stumbled out of his mouth as he hastily rushed forward towards the large building before him, figuring that this would be the best place to start: The HQ of the Rune Knights. If there was any place to join the organization that had made itself a name as Fiore's trusted police force ... well, this would be it ... maybe, probably, hopefully. He really hoped so. The way up these stairs had better not been for nothing, if it was, well, maybe the nearest dark guild would take him on as an apprentice or something. Did dark mages even have something like apprentices? ANYWAY!

The young man stumbled around awkwardly, trying to find a sign or label to something like a reception or similar, realizing after a few minutes of some anxiety settling in that he could probably just walk through the front door and find just what he was looking for, judging by the number of people that just did the same thing, that was. Phew. "Alright, I can do this", he muttered under his breath before stepping inside, promptly spotting the reception he was looking for. A relieved smirk spread across his face. Hell yeah. He walked up to the receptionist, who watched him approach with welcoming smile, though as soon as it was time to speak, Shen's inability to deal with social situations became more than obvious, stuttering out an introduction. "H-h-hey there. I- I uhhh, yeah, I'm here to like, join the Rune Knights. S-sooo ... how do I actually do that?". His confusion was evident, and he really hoped he could get a comprehensive explanation, something that wasn't all that hard to follow. Knowing himself, he could use the help, or he'd end up doing something wrong again and embarrassing himself. A circumstance the young man would rather avoid ...

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Similar to the young man that was painstakingly making his way up the long flight of stairs that lead to the Rune Knight headquarters and hall of the Magic Council, Serilda was not much a fan of the day’s heat wave. While she didn’t necessarily suffer in the sunlight, her affinity for cold based magics meant that she was much more comfortable in cooler climates. Thankfully, the building and her office were both air conditioned. It was a welcomed relief to the warmth, especially for Xiuhcoatl. The large wolf’s starry coat was thick and primarily black, so she typically had an even more difficult time in heat than Serilda did.

As the canine lounged on a large pillow, chewing eagerly on a toy bone like a common house dog, Serilda leafed through a large file on her desk. It had been several months since the attack on Era had placed her in charge of the Knights, and taking over without her predecessor there to fill her in regarding sensitive documents had been tedious to say the least. She’d spent much of her time pouring through document after document trying to gain as much knowledge as possible. It was a task that would drive anyone mad, and even someone as stoic and work minded as Serilda had found herself getting more and more stir crazy as time went on.

Thankfully, there was a light at the end of the tunnel. With Mythal’s help, she had managed to get through the worst of it. There was still a lot of work to do, but none of it was as time pressing as what she’d already gone through. Even the file currently before her was a recent document that the Council had forwarded to her for review, rather than something from an incident that had taken place long before she assumed the role of Field Marshal.

Of course, the lull in work just left space to be filled by complications in her personal life. Victoria had been blessedly silent for most of the day, the Seal keeping most of her comments casual. Adjusting to life as a Seal host had been aggravating to say the least, but she at least wasn’t going through it alone. Mythal was in the same boat as her, and Lux was arguably more of a handful than Victoria was, if in a different way. Still, Serilda was hardly on amicable terms with the Seal of Conquest, not after everything Victoria had done. They disagreed on almost everything, and Serilda spent most of her time putting Victoria in her place and reminding her who was in charge. Needless to say, their relationship was strained.

All this paperwork is dull, the Seal commented in Serilda’s head. I’m hardly needed for this, and we both know you’d rather I’d not be here anyway. Release me for a while.

No. Serilda didn’t even bother looking up from her paperwork, the disinterested response more reflexive than anything else.

Victoria sighed with exasperation. Look, you’ve made your point. You beat me, and you’re the one in full control now. This constant need to assert your dominance over me is getting old. Did I not submit?

I don’t trust you, and I don’t see that changing in the foreseeable future. Just because you yielded and you can’t stray very far from me doesn’t mean you can’t get into trouble. I don’t need you harassing anyone, particularly my soldiers. Until such a time as I feel you can be given slack in your leash, I will keep you where I can control you.

Meanwhile, at the reception area of the building down on the first floor, Valorie watched the approach of the young man. He seemed a bit out of breath, and despite the confidence with which he approached her he stammered his words a bit as he talked. She felt a bit sorry for him, but she had also seen many others come through that door with similar dispositions looking to join their ranks. He was probably just nervous. Either way, it wasn’t her job to judge on that.

She smiled kindly at him. “I’m glad to hear you’re interested in becoming a Knight. You’ll want to speak with the sergeant in charge of recruitment, whose office is located up on the fourth floor.” Valorie pointed toward a door to her right. “Follow that hallway until it leads out into the courtyard. Then you’ll take the fifth door, which will bring you to the stairs that goes up to the officer’s offices. There should be signs if you get lost. Normally they don’t station themselves so far away from the reception area, but we’re still renovating the building after the attack a few months ago.”

At this point Valorie, along with pretty much all the Rune Knights, assumed that everyone had heard about the brutal attack they and the city had suffered. There was still evidence of it around the building in the form of construction to repair damages, though from the looks of things they were nearly done with such work. “Good luck!” Without further ado, she turned her attention away from the young man to answer the phone ringing in front of her, leaving him to follow her rather vague instructions.

    Knock-knock.

Knuckles tapped against the heavy wooden door leading into the Field Marshal's office, the doorknob clicking as the object was pushed open from its hinges. "Ahhh. . . I'm coming innn. . . excuse the intrusiooon. . ." Doppo said as quietly as he could, and without enthusiasm to add. He opened and closed the door with a carefulness akin to a parent trying not to wake their sleeping baby when exiting the room and even though he was well aware of how busy Hilda was, he sometimes crept on the line between professionalism and informality at these times. No one knew why, but the Major sometimes and sporadically became intrusive but never bothersome.

The redhead approached her with the same amount of silence in his stride, leaning over and tapping on space on her desk next to the pile of documents she was reviewing. His face was, as usual, indifferent and unreadable. His red hair was in such a mess that you could barely see his stunning blue eyes through them, and yet the bags beneath them seemed perfectly visible. Besides this, his uniform was otherwise flawless. "It's about time for lunch. . . why don't you come with us to the cafeteria. . .?" Doppo suggested to her in his usual nonchalance and quietness.

The "us" he was referring to was a small batch of men and women from the Combat Corps. They were all a rowdy bunch and Doppo never joined them for meals of his own will, but they all pestered him so ceaselessly about Field Marshall Sinclair that he felt almost obligated to ask. This, and, he had something to give her, of course. As he usually did.

". . .Oh, and—" Doppo suddenly perked up as if he recalled something important, reaching into his pocket to retrieve something. Once he grasped it, he placed it on her desk, ". . . this is for you. It helps with fertility. . . and uh. . . it's maca root flavored. . ."

What Doppo placed on her desk was a Pink Stork Fertility Tea, which he conveniently purchased as a local store. He didn't go out of his way to buy it, but when he saw it, thought of Hilda.

    "I. . . uh—you have my support. . . if. . . you want. . . kids. . . you. . . ah. . ." Doppo slowly stammered over himself, reaching into his pocket to grab something and place it on her desk again. It was another Fertility Tea. ". . .It's actually quite tasty. . . I tried it. . . and. . . felt invigorated. . . and. . . I got you two, so. . ."

Post by Nestor Azarov 31st July 2019, 7:56 am

The woman on the other side of the counter seemed to smile politely. Man, she had to think that Shen was an absolute degenerate. Couldn't even talk straight. He should've laid out what he was gonna say in his head before he had even opened his mouth, now regretting his haste. Anyway, at least the receptionist seemed nice and helpful, explaining that he had to speak to some kind of sergeant. Shen had no idea what that meant, but he assumed the person in charge of that was some kind of Rune Knight Officer. That was to be expected. "Fourth floor", the young man repeated the instruction while giving her an affirming nod, moreso to keep it in his head than to confirm whether he had heard correctly. Internally, he cringed a little, thinking that "on the fourth floor" meant more stairs. Maybe it wasn't too late to join a dark guild, after all? Did dark guilds have stairs ...? If they did joining one wouldn't make any sense either, would it? He left the subject alone. At the end of the day, he wasn't a bad person, and joining a dark guild was really something that was not on his agenda.

"Oh crap-", the realization that he had been absorbed in his thoughts about stairs hit him. He had probably stared at the woman blankly, and certainly hadn't really listened to what she had been saying in any case. Well ... fuck. What had she said just now? Uhh, something about following the hallway to the courtyard and ... shit. He hadn't gotten anything after that. This was awkward. Should he ask her again? But she had just said it. She would think him a complete idiot if he asked her to repeat it right away, someone who couldn't even follow the simplest of instructions. Instead, Shen chose to simply smirk and nod, admittedly a little awkwardly, laughing with a nervous undertone. "G-got it, thanks for your help. I'll be on my way then, hehe ..." Shen replied before immediately turning around when she reached for the phone, walking towards the only part of her directions he remembered, the hallway, reaching the courtyard shortly after. "It's not gonna be that bad, c'mon Shen, you can wing it". He would repeat it in his head a few times in an underwhelming attempt to convince himself of the success in his search for his destination. What did she say? Like, first door or something, right? With an act of confidence, Shen opened the door, taking the stairs up to the fourth floor, again breathing heavily when he finally reached it. If this was what he had to deal with every day he would throw himself off this very plateau.

In any case, this was where the hard bit would begin. Taking a few seconds to regain at least some semblance of composure, the young man walked forward to the first door ahead, confident that this was where he should be. He cleared his throat, three knocks manifesting as dull thuds on the wooden door. So he'd really end up doing it, this was it. He would devote his life to this. Would he really do this for the rest of his life? What if he didn't like what he was gonna do? What if the Rune Knights weren't the right thing for him? What if they wouldn't even consider him because, well, frankly, Shen was aware that he wasn't exactly Knight material? In a little bit of a panic, the young man didn't even listen for the command to enter, instinctively twisting the doorknob he had already grasped and stepped into the space behind it. Immediately, he recognized that this looked like some kind of office space, so maybe he was right, though the recruiter he was expecting was accompanied by both some kind of canine and what seemed like a Rune Knight with red hair, an immaculate uniform adorning the somewhat tired-looking fellow, and a woman with white hair that could only be described as gorgeous. She had something about her that just made Shen's jaw drop a little, whether that was her graceful looks or the evident aura of confidence, he didn't quite know. "H-hey, uh, so, I was sent here to uh, speak to someone, about joining- joining the Rune Knights. If you're, like, busy, uh, I can just leave again, no biggie", the words already had begun stumbling out without any thought, Shen turning slightly and pointing at the open door behind him. Today was really the day he would make a complete fool of himself.

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.

Her Void sense alerted her to Doppo’s presence before he even knocked on her door, though she didn’t know it was him until she heard his voice. He entered her office as softly as a mouse and moved to her desk at a gentle pace. Serilda looked up from her documents and gave him a kind smile. “Good to see you, major,” she told him with mirth in her eyes. Despite the teasing about using his title instead of his name, she was being friendly with him. There was also a hint of pride in her tone. She knew the man had worked very hard and overcome a lot of setbacks in his life to reach the place he was, and he deserved the respect of his title even if the two of them were predominantly on a first name basis.

Doppo spoke up to invite her to lunch and a small frown crossed her face. “Lunch? It’s only…” Her voice trailed off as she looked over at the clock on her wall to see that it was, indeed, near about lunch time. “Oh.” After a brief pause of coming to terms with how badly she’d lost track of time, the marshal chuckled and shook her head a little. “I swear, I’m such a mess on the days that Mythal’s not here to remind me to take a breather. I’d love to go to lunch with you.”

    Thank heavens.

    Oh, shut up.

She was putting away the paperwork and everything was going fine until he placed something on her desk. Before she could even see what it was, he told her its purpose. Serilda was caught so off guard by it that her hand slipped while closing a drawer and she jammed her fingers. An impressive feat given that normally she could wave her entire body through inanimate objects like they weren’t even there, but it went to show how instantly frazzled she’d become.

As she winced and nursed her aching fingers, he placed a second pack down, explaining that he’d tried one and it was quite tasty. Truthfully, Serilda was barely processing his words. Her face was completely flushed with shame and embarrassment, and even a little anger though that was easier for her to hide. In a carefully even voice, she told him, “That’s very thoughtful of you, Chiyuki, and I appreciate your… support.

She was doing her best to keep herself collected and was mostly succeeding, but that was greatly in part because of who she was speaking with. Doppo had always been well meaning, if odd. If it had been anyone else she might have let her indignation fly, but she did try to show a little extra patience with the man currently standing before her. “I know you’re trying to be helpful, but--”

Serilda’s attempt to gently dissuade Doppo from continuing such gestures in the future was cut off by the approach of a third person. After knocking, the door opened to reveal a young man with bright red and black hair. She did not recognize him as one of her soldiers, and indeed he was dressed very much like a civilian. He took a look at her and Doppo with crimson eyes and his jaw even fell slightly slack when he looked at her. For her part, the marshal made no indication that she noticed this. “May I help you?” she asked him with polite professionalism, eager to steer away from the topic of conversation that Chiyuki had presented.

He explained that he’d been sent here to ask about recruitment opportunities, though he quickly offered to come back another time if she was too busy. For a brief moment she was confused about why a new recruit had been sent to her. As the field marshal, she was already quite busy and for the most part no longer took an active part in recruiting. She had delegated such tasks to a whole office of knights. But then, she remembered about the construction that was still going on.

Happy for the interruption, Serilda gave him a small smile. “This is not the recruitment office, actually, but we can still help you. Please, come in and have a seat.” She gestured to one of the chairs in front of her desk and then took the two boxes of tea that Doppo had given her and placed them discreetly in one of her drawers where she could more easily forget about the awkward encounter for now. Chastising Doppo would simply have to wait until later -- as would lunch.

“My name is Serilda Sinclair. I’m the field marshal for the Rune Knights. This is Major Chiyuki Suzuki, with the combat division.” She gave him a moment to introduce himself and otherwise respond as he desired. Once he was seated, she would ask, “Why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself, and why you want to join the knights?”

Chiyuki's conversation with Hilda seemed to have been cut short when a young man taller than both Chiyuki and Hilda walked in. Despite his height, he stammered over his words and sputtered them anxiously, not sounding nearly as confident as he appeared. Not only that, his timing couldn't have been worse. It was lunchtime, and while Chiyuki and his "friends" decided to go eat at the earliest shift and would have around an hour or two to dine, sometimes the recruitment process could take that long. No doubt that these friends of his would leave Chiyuki and Hilda to their devices when too much time had passed, and while Chiyuki didn't mind this, still wanted to eat with Hilda since he was the one who invited her.

These were the subjects consuming the redhead's thoughts as Hilda and the aspiring Rune Knight talked. He was staring at the floor, mulling over these circumstances with an indifferent expression on his face. He continued to do this until his name surfaced in the conversation.

Chiyuki perked up at this, dipping his head in greeting to the taller man. ". . .Hello. . ." he said quietly before shuffling away from the chairs and instead standing adjacent to Hilda's. After repositioning himself in the room, he went back to mulling over the compromising circumstances of their lunch shift.

Shen's face begun turning a healthy shade of tomato when the woman began speaking, informing him that the space he had stumbled into was, in fact, not the recruitment office he had been looking for, Shen subsequently deducing from that that neither the uniformed man nor the woman were actually recruiters. Wordlessly, he would begin to chuckle nervously along with a few enthusiastic nods, swiftly placing himself on the seat she'd offered. At least the red-haired fellow didn't seem as talkative as the woman with the white hair, offering a relatively simple greeting, Shen only grinning nervously in response, giving the man "the nod" as a response. He'd fucked up big time. This was supposed to be his interview, and before he had even begun he had already messed it up. Doubt once more found its way to the young man's thoughts, who now viewed the whole "Dark Guild" deal with less skepticism only to come back to the same conclusion he had reached earlier already. Other than that the peculiar fellow seemed rather disinterested, though stood up as soon as Shen had taken a seat, this fact not serving to easy the young man's nervousness.

Of course, that wasn't all. There was also the not necessarily negligible fact that the woman introduced herself as the Field Marshal of the Rune Knights, a position that, at least to Shen's knowledge, indicated not a just a high position within the knights themselves, no, it was the highest there was. If Shen's face had formerly been of a healthy red color, it was now glowing with the same hues. "M-m-miss Sinclair. I- I mean Field Marshal, of course!". Shen forced an insecure smile, a single thought racing through his head. The realization that undoubtedly and unequivocally, he had made a massive mistake. "M-major", the man stalled, turning his head to the other in acknowledgment before going back to the Field Marshal. "I- uhh, my name is Shen. Shen Kadokawa. I, uhh, I've come to- to join the Rune Knights". As soon as he had finished his sentence Shen had to suppress the desire to facepalm. Of course, he wanted to join the RK. He had literally just mentioned that fact when he had entered Miss Sinclair's office. "About m-myself? W-why I wanna ... uhhh ...", he stuttered, unsure what to make of the woman's questions, lost on what to tell her exactly. In truth, Shen didn't quite know why he had joined the Rune Knights himself, although the best answer to the question would likely be something along the lines of "Well, I am bored with my life and want to do something". Of course, he was convinced the woman wouldn't think that a good answer.

"Well, I, uh, I'm 22 years old and from Cedar. As for why I wanna join ...", the man stopped to think for a second before giving the woman his answer. "... I, uh, I just wanna do something to, like, help people out, ya know? Like, make an impact and stuff like that, heh ...". Great job, Shen. Real smooth. They'd probably think him a massive dork for not just the way he expressed himself, but also the way he spoke. Evidently, Shen wasn't the most confident person, a fact that surely hadn't escaped the two knights. "So, uh, what else do you need? Is there, like, paperwork? M-maybe, like, a test?", the young man followed up swiftly, nervously tapping one of his knees with his index finger, all the while trying to maintain a smile that, in all manners, appeared somewhat shaky.

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
This young man was quite the nervous nelly. Was he embarrassed because he’d stumbled into the wrong room? Specifically, hers? Probably. Serilda likely would be just as humiliated by something like that, were she in his shoes. He was red as a beet and stuttering every time he tried to talk. Regardless, she listened patiently as he got through answering her questions. He told her his name was Shen, his age, where he was from, and that he wanted to join the knights because he wanted to help others. He then inquired from her as to whether or not there were other things he would need to do, such as paperwork or some kind of test.

Serilda was starting to get the feeling that Shen wasn’t much of a talker, probably less comfortable in social situations than in ones where he could focus on completing some kind of task. It was something she could accommodate, especially since they did need to have at least some idea of his skills and capabilities before deciding if he was a right fit for them. Though at this point, they needed to refill their ranks so badly that they were talking almost anyone as long as they weren’t an active dark mage. Even if he wasn’t soldier material, that didn’t mean he couldn’t help out with paperwork or medical teams or research and development -- there were lots of options.

She smiled at him, doing her best to try and put him at ease by not drawing too much attention to his nervousness. “There will be some paperwork, yes. And we don’t really have a test so much as an assessment to help us determine what branch you would be best suited for, though most privates aren’t assigned a branch until after they’ve completed basic training.”

The marshal turned to Doppo, pointing at one of the filing cabinets lined on one of her walls. “Major, would you do me a favor and get recruitment packet for Mr. Kadokawa, please? Top drawer, toward the front. There should be several of them.” The packets had informational brochures as well as the starting paperwork Shen would need to fill out for his background check and processing. She also removed a pen from a little jar on her desk and set it down in front of Shen, in case he wanted to start filling it out while they chatted.

Deciding it was best to give him a little bit of information, she continued. “We have three major branches. Combat focuses on your traditional soldier work, such as patrolling the streets and keeping the citizens of Fiore safe from the day to day issues that arise. Then there is special operations, which focuses more on espionage and information gathering. The last one is engineering, which heads our research and development goals and keeps the army up to date with technology both magical and mundane.”

Serilda didn’t want to dump too much on him at once, but she figured a quick explanation of their branches would suffice in helping them both figure out the best way to approach Shen’s candidacy. “I guess what we need to know in order to properly assess you is what branch interests you the most, if any, and what kind of skills or talents you might already have. Are you trained in any magic or combat, or perhaps a trade of some kind?”

As the conversation between the Field Marshal and the interested Mr. Kadokawa progressed, the redheaded Major began to long for his meal even more. Despite this, he was still able to pay attention to what they were saying.

Mr. Kadokawa, while tall, looked much younger than he claimed to be. His appearance was juvenile and his lack of confidence seemed to overshadow every other characteristic about him. The casualness of his speech reminded Chiyuki of Private Tamlin, who, although having similar mannerisms, simply had more confidence and a spunkiness to him. He knew that a person's physique was not an accurate reflection of their magical capability, but Chiyuki couldn't help but notice how lean he was. If he hadn't known better, he would've surmised that not a single muscle would show up on that body of his or that maybe his arms would snap if they picked up a weight. Chiyuki had known better but decided to let himself make inconsequential
judgments regardless, which subsequently made him more curious as to what branch Mr. Kadokawa would be interested in.

When Hilda asked him to retrieve a recruitment packet, Chiyuki did exactly as he was told and placed it right in front of Mr. Kadokawa just as Hilda's explaination of the branches dawned on the conversation. The Major was pondering lunch for the majority of the conversation thus far, looking at his feet or at no one in particular, but was now staring blankly at Mr. Kadokawa as he began to wonder what he might be interested in. The droopiness of his eyes and the layers of bags beneath them made his gaze screw into some permanent glare or a stare that looked perpetually unimpressed with whatever he was looking at, and this oftentimes gave people a sour impression of him. But their impressions were quickly trivialized or discarded when first speaking with Chiyuki, as he was much easier to get along with than he might appear. Whether or not Mr. Kadokawa would come to discard the impression he would likely gain from this wasn't something the redhead seemed concerned about, however.

"O-oooooohhhkay, gooootcha", Shen replied with a distinct lack of eloquence and all the more perplexity when the Field Marshal explained the procedure behind the process that would admit him to into the organization known as the Rune Knights, if he was actually suitable, that was. At current, the entire prospect was more intimidating than anything, especially considering the young man had what amounted to basically zero knowledge on anything resembling branches within the Rune Knights themselves, let alone any idea which branch he was best suited for, if any. The other Rune Knight present would, upon the woman's command, promptly produce the requested "recruitment package", Shen finding himself overwhelmed with an assortment of information and the paperwork he had inquired about, hastily fumbling to grab the pen that the Field Marshal offered, trying to make sense of the sheet upon sheet of official papers while keeping up with the conversation. Not to mention that the Major now stood off to the side, eyeing him with an unwavering intensity that didn't exactly help ease Shen's nervousness. Quite the opposite, in fact. The intense, unrelenting glare caused the newcomer to break out into a light sweat, his eyes nervously and periodically moving into Suzuki's direction for just a moment before focussing on the paperwork and Field Marshal once more.

"So, uh ... Combat, Spec Ops, and Engineering? I, uh, I think I got it". And while Shen said that, the flood of information was in honesty quite overwhelming for the young man, his mind that was in a somewhat chaotic state of disarray in this particular moment not exactly contributing to what could be described as a well-rounded understanding of the options that Miss Sinclair provided him with, Shen choosing to think and nervously scribble down text into the paper before him. That was, of course, until the Field Marshal specifically inquired about his interest in a branch and, a topic that the young man feared would come up, his talents and abilities. Shen cleared his throat, not looking up from the papers at first, thinking for a few seconds as he managed to stumble forth with a few words, "Well, uhh ... I ... okay, here's the thing ...", before facing the Field Marshal's gaze, a nervous, embarrassed smile forming on his face. "... in honesty, I'm not- I'm not really good at combat. I've never fought, uh, anything ... in my life". He was quick to follow up with "... And I don't really know any magic either. I, uh, I have the very very basics down, but ... I- I, unfortunately, can't ... really ... use any ... at the moment". In an effort to seem at least vaguely useful and not entirely incompetent, Shen would make sure to inform her about his one odd talent that he'd had ever since ... well, always, really. "I mean there's, like, this thing where ... I can smell blood from really far away. Like, inside of people, too, but really well when it's ... free. Like, you know, from a good distance, really, miles, potentially, but ... to be frank, that's- uh, that's about it".

The young man acknowledged that after he had confessed this his chances of actually getting to join the Rune Knights were ... rather slim, to say the least, but perhaps if the basic training the Rune Knights offered would include some kind of program to develop his innate magic, well, perhaps there would be hope for a lost cause like himself. "So ... I don't wanna make any assumptions, a-and it's cool if it's not the case really! But, y'know, uh, is there like, a chance that the Rune Knights offer ... y'know, some kind of training ... for magic? I- I think I could do it, I just, uh, I ... haven't really tried it all that much ... yet. But I'm- I'm confident I could pull it off with ... a bit of help". He would lower his gaze back to the papers in a flush of shame, ready to be turned away on the spot, go back to Cedar and just forget the whole thing ... and yet, there was a spark of hope that maybe, just maybe he would be given a chance.

“Thank you, Doppo,” Serilda said as the major moved to get the requested documents for Shen to take a look at. The recruit in question fumbled with the pen she offered him. Why was this poor young man so nervous, she wondered? Serilda knew that she could be intimidating to some for a number of reasons, but somehow she got the feeling that Shen’s anxiety had nothing to do with his present company. Well, maybe Doppo’s company. The Major had a habit of unnerving people just by being himself, which wasn’t really Doppo’s fault. He was kind, just odd and a bit socially awkward. Still, Serilda didn’t miss the way Shen’s eyes kept darting back to the major’s like he half expected the quiet man to devour him whole.

...Probably best not to tell him what Doppo’s magic was, for now.

Setting it upon herself to try and help the young man relax a little, she gave him a small, but warm smile. “Would you like some tea?” Presuming he agreed, she stood to go make some as he explained more about his skills. Or rather, lack thereof. There was a small bar against a wall that had an assortment of drinks, both alcoholic and non. Serilda didn’t drink much herself these days, especially after that one time, but she liked to keep that sort of stuff handy for whenever she had guests in her office. One of the things on the small counter was a kettle that was magically enhanced to fill itself instantly with perfect temperature water for tea.

The one thing he did make note about was that he apparently had the ability to smell blood for miles. Interesting. Serilda’s expression was neutral as she poured three cups of tea, but her mind was churning a bit. If his affinity was for blood she could help him… but the thought was a bit sour for her. The marshal herself had only recently come into the possession of exceptionally powerful blood magic, but she didn’t exactly want that magic. In fact, she detested it and went out of her way not to use it as much as possible. Blood magic was often seen as evil. This wasn’t true, of course. No magic was inherently evil. However, it was often used for horrible things. Did she really want to pass such dangerous skills off to another person?

She would have to give it some thought. Picking up two of the glasses with her hands, Serilda walked them over and offered them to both the men in the room with her. Once more, she smiled at Shen in a comforting fashion. “We offer training to everyone that joins us,” she told him reassuringly. “You’re not the first person to come to us that hasn’t had the opportunity to pick up fighting abilities beforehand, and I’m sure you won’t be the last. Besides, the ability to use a weapon or to cast spells… those things are important, yes, but not as valuable as integrity.

Walking back over to the bar, she picked up the third drink for herself as well as the kettle, which she set on the corner of the desk closest to Doppo. Knowing him, he’d probably already finished his cup and was ready for seconds. It was simpler to just let him have access to the tea making item and let him refill his glass at his leisure. “When men and women come to us, I’m less concerned with their fighting skills so much as where their hearts are. Fighting and magic can be taught. But caring about the wellbeing of others, having a passion or desire to protect the innocent no matter the cost to yourself… not everyone has that.”

Sitting back down across from him, she held his crimson eyes with her own crystal blue ones. There was a demeanor of understanding and ease about her that made it clear she wasn’t judging him in the slightest for essentially having to start at the bottom. “If your desire is to help defend Fiore’s citizens against those who would hurt or take advantage of them, then I promise I can provide you with the tools and the skills to make that desire a reality. We can teach you any kind of weapon that might seem suitable for you, any kind of magic that catches your interest. All I need is people that are willing to try, even when trying seems… daunting.”

"A-ah, uh, sure. I mean why not. Tea sounds- ... sounds really nice. T-thank you", Shen managed to laugh in a fashion that was observably more nervous than anything else, though he did genuinely appreciate the gesture. People who knew the young man knew that one of his joys in life was a good cup of tea, though now that he thought about it, there weren't exactly a lot of those people. Very, very few, actually. Regardless, he would take the cup from the offering Field Marshal with a quick "T-thanks", a smile that carried some honest relief finding its way onto his face as he stared down at the steaming liquid, setting aside paperwork for just a moment to take a sip. Thinking about it, the white-haired woman seemed pretty nice, as imposing a sight as she was. The other guy she kept calling Doppo, though, gave him the creeps, not least due to the fact that he simply kept staring at Shen with laser-like focus and intent.

What was also relieving was the fact that Miss Sinclair explained that the Rune Knights did, in fact, offer training, Shen's expression lighting up ever-so-slightly, the chance that they'd allow him to stay, in his eyes, getting just a little bit bigger. The Field Marshal was quick to change her approach, however, accentuating the fact that martial prowess was not everything the Rune Knights were interested in and that what she defined as integrity would play a much bigger role. Shen had expected as much. He didn't necessarily believe in integrity so much as he believed in the value of morality, though he did recognize the importance of values, especially when applied to an organization such as this one which, from what he could piece together, would undoubtedly be entrusted with extensive powers.

Shen couldn't exactly lay that out, of course, not in the way he wanted to in order to dispel any doubt and make himself clear, he wasn't exactly great at that, as demonstrated, though in essence, he did agree with Serilda. While Shen didn't necessarily share too strong of a conviction, though, he knew what a position in the Rune Knights entailed and the responsibilities that came with it. Despite his nervous and rather awkward behavior, he wasn't stupid, and he had given this more than one or two thoughts. That coupled with the fact that Shen didn't think too highly of himself, if he would lay down his life in the line of duty while protecting someone, or something along those lines perhaps, well, at least his up until this point quite meaningless existence would have had some purpose, after all. A fact that brought a small, but steady smile onto his lips. "Well, uh, Field Marshal ...", he began, pausing briefly to collect his thoughts, "I- ... to be honest with you, I am willing to do whatever it takes. I'm kinda desperate ... but ... if I can help someone out in the process, someone who, like, really needs the help, well ... that would be a pretty cool thing, right?". While the words were easy to speak, Shen had a hard time imagining himself as someone's savior, but who knew? If he would get this job, if they would accept him into their ranks, the prospect was not unrealistic, just ... it would take some time getting used to. "I, uh, I- ... I just don't think I have the means to do that at the moment", he confessed quite genuinely. Something about the woman's demeanor helped him feel at ease, made him feel like he could be direct. Maybe he could pick up some confidence on the side now that he didn't have to deal with his sister anymore, either.

In the end, it all depended on what the Field Marshal would say and what the future had in store for him.

Despite Hilda having known Doppo for only a relatively short amount of time, he would have to acknowledge how well she's come to know him. Instead of offering him a single serving of tea, she simply placed the kettle on the desk closest to him. Needless to say, Doppo helped himself over and over again. Maybe Doppo was simply just easy to figure out?

Mr. Kadokawa, who kept stuttering in his seat, also seemed like an easy read. He was a young man who had visions of justice and support but having no means or confidence to do so. The redheaded Major could only imagine how tough it must be to live with such low self-esteem but high aspirations; a want to do something but an inability to do so. Holding the cup of tea to his mouth, Doppo's impassive countenance became just slightly more sympathetic.

Contemplating about Mr. Kadokawa's circumstances had Doppo suddenly reminiscing about his childhood—a time where he too felt somewhat useless or untalented. He lived in the slums of Motor City emotionally charged prostitute for a mother and a father whose presence in his life was in the form of a weekly bag of jewels he was obligated to provide. Although comparing his negligent childhood to wanting to enlist into the Rune Knights might have been some sort of a stretch, Doppo wondered if maybe his former feelings of weakness were really so different from Mr. Kadokawa's at this time. Doppo had no real role in this conversation, but he was already wondering on how to fix that confidence of his.

Deep in thought, the redhead was going through servings of tea at rather alarming rates. Of course, this was normal behavior, but perhaps rather frightening for anyone who wasn't aware of his magic. He didn't say anything as he waited for Hilda's response.

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Given how used to Doppo’s mannerisms and habits that Serilda was, she wasn’t at all alarmed or concerned about the sheer intake of tea that the man was displaying, nor the way he simply sat there in almost eerie silence watching poor Shen. The recruit accepted the tea with thanks, and then sipped it as he listened a bit to what Serilda had to say.

By the end of it all, he reassured her that he was willing to do what it took to become a knight. She could only take the phrase of “I’m desperate” to mean that he was in a bit of a tight spot when it came to careers, but that didn’t mean that he didn’t believe the Rune Knights was a last resort. He still valued that the position would let him help other people, he was just concerned about his ability to do that at present.

    She could work with that.

“Very well, then, we’ll get you set up,” she told him, taking a sip from her own glass. “If you need a place to stay, there are barracks here and we can have a room assigned to you. We’ll pair you with another recruit that’s been here for a while who can help show you around for a few weeks to make sure you know where everything is. I’ll also make sure you’re taken to the tailor so we can get your uniforms made. Take a few days to get ready and settled, and we can start you in basic training next week.”

As long as everything above sounded agreeable, Serilda would patiently wait for Shen to fill out the paperwork she’d given him. If he had any questions about any of it, she would kindly coach him through it and do her best to make sure he understood everything he was signing on for. The last thing she wanted was someone to apply for the Knights without some basic idea of what they were getting into, but she felt that Shen understood. He clearly wasn’t all that great when it came to socializing, as he seemed almost paralyzingly shy, but that didn’t mean he was unintelligent.

Once the application was all said and done, Serilda straightened up the papers and tucked them into a folder, which then was safely placed in a secured drawer for her to have processed later.  “Welcome to the Rune Knights! Let’s get you all set up.”
