WHEN WORDS COLLIDE
How had it come down to this? One moment Sorano had been peacefully sitting at her desk, crouched carefully over her paperwork, and in what seemed like the very next, here she was, getting married to a guildmate of hers. It had all started that one fateful morning…
Sorano glanced up as Hoshi breezed into the room, snowy white wings gradually dissipating into the air as she alighted upon the guild master’s desk. “Sorano, Sorano! There’s a fantastic job opportunity here that’s been going wild all over Fiore. Check this out!” Slapping the stack of papers onto the letter mage’s desk, the feline stretched her body out in a lithe movement before scrambling over to jab at the paper with a carefully sheathed paw. “So Valentine’s Day is coming up, right? There’s this chocolate company that’s been running behind on their deliveries, so they’re paying mages to take care of it at these crazy sweet prices – aha, forgive the pun. Doesn’t that sound great?”
Sorano blinked up at her partner before gazing down at the paper again. It sounded too good to be true – simply transporting a box of chocolates across Rose Garden was far too easy, right? There simply had to be a catch. If there was anything the girl had learned throughout her extensive magical career, it was that things that sounded good never ended up being good. You had to check everything through carefully before accepting such information as fact, and she intended to do just that. However, just as the letter mage extracted her iLac from the folds of her skirt, Hoshi slapped a paw at it, shoving it back into her pockets.
“Oh no no no Sorano, not this time, don’t you worry. I got this all figured out – just trust me!” Purring in delight, the tabby lashed her tail back and forth, energy filling her entire vessel. “I did all the research, even interviewed the company…hell, me and one of my delivery buddies even did a round of the job myself! Easy-peasy, and the money’s good, too. C’mon, Sorano, get out of the office for once without spending all your outdoors time killing monsters. What’s the fun in that?”
Reluctantly giving in to Hoshi’s requests, the letter mage walked downstairs, ready to sign herself up for the task. She trusted the enthusiastic exceed almost as much as she trusted herself. There was no need to worry, right? Yet as she penciled her name onto the form and prepared to submit, the fairy at the desk spat back a quick “rejected”, pushing the form back at Sorano. “You need a partner to do this one – and Hoshi doesn’t count, because she’s already done the job.”
The letter mage was confused, but nevertheless, let her eyes drift around the hall, wondering who would be a decent partner to bring along on the task. Spotting a familiar blonde head drift past one of the tables, the guild master would walk over at a brisk pace, tapping Althea quickly on the shoulder. “Would you by any chance be interested in doing a job with me?”
