I've been out there and seen the things she's made

It had been one hell of a match. Mythal got the opportunity to watch it from the ground, his body refusing to answer him as he called it to move. All he could do was watch as the Voidwalker fought with her heart and soul, all the power she had putting put on display in grand fashion. By the end of it all, Argus was lying on the ground immobile and Serilda was left standing. The audience was stunned for a long moment, every single person waiting to see if Argus would get back to his feet one last time. But no such revolt came and then the cheering began, the chants of ‘new champs’ echoing throughout the arena. The God Slayer managed to smirk just enough as the darkness of unconsciousness began to seep into his vision. He watched Serilda up until his vision went completely blank and he passed out.

He was out for quite some time, even after the healers had tended to them. The amount of magic he had expended all at once had done a number on his magical pool and he needed a good, long rest. The medics helped him and Serilda back to their cottage, gifting them with their prize and their winnings before leaving. Though it was just bordering on evening, Mythal continued to sleep right through the night and only stirred right before dawn. He groaned softly, his eyes shifting behind their lids as he rose out of unconsciousness, feeling the heaviness of reality set back onto him. His body was sore, sure, but not nearly as bad as it could have been. It was amazing what some actual rest after healing magic could do.

It was still a bit early for Serilda to get up, though not by much. Surely once the first beams of sunlight curled over the horizon, she would be waking as well. He glanced over at her, lying in the bed next to him and he sighed, a small smile on his face. Fighting beside her had eased a lot of his mental anguish, if only temporarily. He forgot how thrilling a good fight could be and they had gone through a lot of them in a short amount of time. All his worries and cares were locked away for the time being, his mind just relieved to have let off some steam and stress. He swung his legs over the edge of the bed and stood up, stretching his body and feeling all his muscles pop and quiver from exhaustion. There was a definite need for a morning stretch today.

And so he did just that. He took a moment to pause by Gren and give him a good petting, the small pup groaning a bit in his sleep and rolling over before falling back into it. Then he walked out to the small screened porch that was attached to their cabana, moving some of the furniture around so he had ample room to set himself up. Once there, he fell down softly and quietly, getting into a perfect push up position and then began the routine of descending and ascending, getting his muscles back into prime form.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

She had made her way over to Mythal when he’d slumped over and lost consciousness, though not very quickly. Serilda had little more energy than he, somehow staying awake out of sheer stubbornness. By the time the medical team arrived, she was already sitting next to Mythal with her head resting on her knees, fighting back the urge to pass out until everything was taken care of. Mythal rarely let himself fall to a state of complete vulnerability like this, and she didn’t intend on leaving him that way until she knew they were in a more secure place.

The healers got them settled physically and even gave them a lift to the spot they’d rented for the weekend. They were given their rewards along with a generous thank you note from a very happy client. The wolves were both more than happy to see their masters, and it took some effort on Serilda’s part to keep them from jumping all over Mythal so he could get some sleep. Xiuhcoatl was easier to handle in that regard, of course, because she listened to Serilda flawlessly -- but there really wasn’t much the woman could do about Gren.

Thankfully, he stayed passed out. Serilda managed enough energy to rinse off in the shower and change into her nightgown before crawling into bed beside him, both animals wiggling for space on the bed with the two humans as well.

For once, Mythal woke before she did. Serilda had passed out as soon as her head hit the pillow, and she didn’t so much as stir when Mythal rose and started his workout for the day. By the time she roused herself, he would likely already be done with his morning exercises. She groaned and slowly sat up in the bed with a sleepy expression, white hair mussed and kinked in places from sleeping on it. Xiuh and Gren were still passed out at the foot of the bed, the former tucked up against her legs.

“Morning…” she said sleepily to Mythal when she saw him. Carefully, she peeled back the blankets and scooted herself out of the bed where she could stand and stretch. Almost immediately a muscle in her calf seized, and she could feel her body pounding from the beating they’d taken. Serilda grimaced and took the pressure off the leg in question. “I don’t know about you, but I feel like I got run through a meat processor…”

Testing the leg a bit to make sure she could walk on it fine, Serilda moved over to the little kitchen nook in the corner and got the coffee pot running. While that was heating up, she moved over to where Mythal was and wrapped her arms loosely around his shoulders for a soft, tired hug, holding him for a minute. She sighed, clearly exhausted. “I might sleep for a week,” Serilda confessed.

By the time that Serilda had woken up, Mythal had escalated to handstand crunches, slowly rising and falling in an altered version of pushups. “Morning,” he said back to her as he finished his set and slowly dropped down towards the floor, crossing his legs and setting himself in a meditative position. Once there, he held his hands on his knees and let his body relax, his body pumping blood through his veins at an awakened rate. He inhaled softly through his nostrils and let it out through his mouth as the Voidwalker made a comment about her condition. “Yeah, definitely feel like I just had a boulder dropped on me from the sky. Gonna be takin’ long hours sleepin’ in, I’ll tell you that,” he remarked, rolling his shoulders a bit. The two of them had fought with every inch of their strength and ability and they were quite worn from it.

She went to get the coffee running, needing the caffeine boost to get herself going. While it brewed, she came over and draped herself over Mythal’s shoulder, pulling him into a loose huge. He reached up with one hand and touched her arm softly, resting his fingers and palms right on the flat of her forearm. He knew he should probably have found some way to wiggle away from her but frankly, after everything they had gone through the day prior, they both needed a little compassion and physical contact. “Don’t think we can extend this weekend away that long,” he said idly, with a hint of humor in his voice.

“I thought about just goin’ back to bed but… can’t stay in it for too long. Get too tired of just sittin’ there,” he said as he loosely slipped out from her grip, if only so he could stand up and face her. He stretched his arms out to the sides and rolled them a bit to get the last bits of tightness from his limbs. “So we managed to win,” he pointed out, obviously. “We get anythin’ special? A trophy? Medals? Something fun at least?”

He returned her embrace, at least as much as he could from their positioning, before standing up and stretching. Mythal joked that they probably wouldn’t be able to extend this little get away that long, and she sighed dramatically. “Sad, but true. I’ll just have to dream about it.”

Mythal asked about their winnings and she blinked for a moment. “Oh right, you were already passed out by then.” Serilda moved over to the console table a few feet away where she’d discarded everything from the day before -- even she had been too exhausted the previous night to put everything away tidily. There was a small mess in that corner of the room where she’d deposited their gear, both their swords, and everything else.

Serilda snatched two of the three pouches that were resting there and brought them back to him. She handed him one of the pouches, which was filled with jewel. “Eighty thousand, I think,” she told him. “Each. These I haven’t looked at yet, but they were a bonus payment from the client.”

She opened the pouch and turned it over into her palm. Out dropped two pieces of jewelry. One was a simple ring, a band of silver with no remarkable engravings and plain of any gems or jewels. The second was a brooch with a ruby set in it. Serilda held them out between them so he could pick one of both of them up to examine them, if he wanted. “He said they were items imbued with magic, though he didn’t say what they were capable of. Or if he did I was too tired to remember what he said.”

The coffee pot beeped at her, so she offered him both items to inspect and went over to the kitchen. “We’ll probably just have to try using them to see what they do,” Serilda said as she pulled down a coffee mug and poured it full of the dark liquid. “Or see if there is someone we can pay to inspect them and tell us what they do.” She poured a bit of milk into the coffee and casually used her magic to stir it together.

As she walked back over, Serilda carefully stretched her neck from side to side trying to work out the kinks. “I know it’s not really your thing but… how would you feel about getting a massage today? A professional one? My muscles are killing me and I don’t use mine quite as strenuously as you do. I can only imagine how sore you are. We don’t have to, but it might do us both some good.” She took a gentle sip from her cup, leaning against the side of the couch.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

It seemed they had gotten paid while he was out – no surprise there. “As long as I missed the ceremony. Did they have a ceremony? I feel like there was a ceremony,” he chuckled. Everything else about that tournament had been pretty over the top, with the nicknames and the spectacles. He imagined they had invited both the winners to some kind of podium to recognize them. Truthfully, he would be relieved to have missed such an attraction. He never was one for attention or glory.

Mythal tracked her as she walked over to the console table, where all of their belongings had been placed. He didn’t realize it until then but taking his clothes off and such must have been a hassle while he was passed out. By the looks of things, she had simply peeled off her own equipment and left it in a haphazard pile. Given how beaten they had been, he couldn’t really blame her on the front. She grabbed two pouches and walked back over to him, hanging him one. He took it and opened it up, taking in the sight of the jewel that lay inside. “Eighty thousand. Not bad,” he said, nodding approvingly. “Just had to risk our limbs for it,” he made a small joke as he closed the bag back up.

The other bag she worked open and turned over so that the contents would fall out into her hand. There was no jewel but rather two jewelry pieces. His brow furrowed in brief confusion as he looked over the two pieces; one was a simple silver ring that was just… as plain as day, though it was quite shiny. The other was a brooch with a setting of rubies in its face. His eyes switched between the two and then he took the ring, picking it up between his fingers. “Well, I was never much of a jewelry person but… maybe I can sport a ring. The other one I have is a bit flashier so only wear it on jobs, just in case, ” he said with a shrug. “You’d look better with the brooch after all."

She went to get her coffee, commenting that they’d just have to use them or have them inspected. “I know a clothier in Magnolia but I doubt he’d know a thing about somethin’ like this. Guess we’ll have to experiment the hard way.” That would be fun. He flipped the ring with his thumb and then caught it, seeing if perhaps it would hover in the air in front of him. It did not. It apparently wasn’t going to be that easy. As he turned the jewelry piece over in his hand, Serilda came back with her coffee and made a suggestion for something to do. A massage from a professional. She had taken quite the beating yesterday, as had he, so the idea was… understandable. He didn’t exactly like people touching him beyond Serilda but… “Yeah, let’s do it,” he said, clutching the ring in the palm of his hand. “Sure, I’m not a fan of people touchin’ me but after yesterday, I don’t really give a damn. A massage could really work out the knots that I ain’t good at gettin’ out myself. So let’s do it.”

She chuckled. “If there was a ceremony, I missed it, too. We were too busy getting healed up, and I more or less insisted on going straight home since you were out and I wasn’t sure how much longer I was going to stay awake.” He seemed satisfied with the amount of jewel they’d each earned, getting another small laugh out of her at his joke.

Mythal selected the ring, which didn’t really surprise her. He wasn’t much for flashy things, and the brooch was definitely a little more on the flashy side. Serilda really didn’t wear too much jewelry herself, but she could make the ruby work somewhere. She smiled at his compliment that she would look better with the brooch between the two of them anyway and tucked the item back in the pouch before going to get her coffee.

“We’ll make some time then to test them out and see what we find,” she said when he advised he didn’t know of anyone that would be capable of inspecting the jewelry for magical properties. The coffee mug was delightfully warm in her hand and the drink was already helping her be more alert after only a few sips.

He thought about her suggestion for a moment before agreeing with it, the idea of soothing his aches weighing greater in his mind at that moment than his dislike for others touching him. “Alright,” she said, knowing he wouldn’t have agreed if he truly did not want to do it. “I’ll call around and find a good place to set up an appointment.”

Thankfully, there were plenty of spa locations on the island. She found a place that offered a couple’s massage, knowing that Mythal would probably be more comfortable with the experience if she was at least in the same room as him. They had more than enough time to leisure through the morning, clean up, eat breakfast, and spend time with the wolves before it was time for them to go. Serilda suggested he bring his swim suit with him, letting him know it was the only thing they’d let him wear unless he was comfortable being naked.

The massage was everything she needed and more. They were lead into a decently sized room that was lightly scented with ocean smells and free from clutter. There were two tables in the center of the room with white sheets. They were left alone for a moment to get ready. She stripped naked entirely, as she had gotten more than enough massages in the past to be comfortable being nude in this setting, and placed her clothes in a cubby that was there for such purposes. Since Mythal had likely never had a professional massage before, Serilda was sure to show him the proper way to fold the sheet around himself before laying down.

After an hour of having their bodies kneaded literally from head to toe, Serilda was in a much better place. She felt loose and relaxed, and at least for a while between that and the lingering endorphins from the fighting yesterday her mind was pretty free of many of the ill thoughts that had been plaguing her for a while, now. As they got back to their little cottage, she said, “I feel so much better.”

Serilda moved over to the porch door and let the dogs out for them to go do their business. “We’ve got the rest of the day. Anything you’re interested in doing?” she asked Mythal.

Well, that wasn't so bad then. He wasn't too upset about hearing a lack of ceremony. He nodded along with the sentiment, happy that he was treated and shipped home rather than held for a time. But it wasn't much of a surprise to be honest -- Serilda probably wouldn't have stomached him being left while she had to go accept whatever reward they were offered in such ceremonious fashion. She was fairly compassionate like that.

The massage would be what it would be. He would appreciate having the rub down, if only so he didn't have to sacrifice great amount of time meditating. He also knew the Voidwalker would appreciate the thought and the massage as well, so there was that. She went to contact the massage places around the island while he continued to meditate. When she returned with news of their appointment, he finally rose his feet and moved past his morning routine. They cleaned themselves, prepared and consumed breakfast and even got to play a bit more with the hounds. Once it was near the time, they got themselves ready. Apparently he had the choice of wearing a bathing suit under the blanket or being naked. Having already trounced the streets of Magnolia with everything out for people to see, he opted to just wing it.

The massage had both a tremendous benefit and an extreme drawback. On the one hand, it got all the kinks out that had set into his muscles and bones. The masseuse was impressive and while he wasn't terribly happy about her hands on him, having Serilda on the other bed made it easier. But at the same time, there was the… smell. His enhanced scents had picked up on the sweet flavors in the air, his mind and body incensed by the lovely smell. And unfortunately that brought back another issue he'd suffered the day prior. Mythal, completely nude, was thankful to be lying on his front to hide the obviousness of it. It was just unfortunate when their time was up and he had to get up and dressed. Serilda had definitely noticed but he did his best to get dressed and move on past it without comment.

Yet she still smelled lovely, like the oils that had been used on her skin. Having clothes on helped but a lot of his concentration was going on to try and dispel it. “Yeah, that was… nice actually,” he said, rolling his shoulders and arms. “Not gonna make it a constant thing but in a pinch, sure helped,” he admitted.

As she let the dogs out, she asked if he had any thoughts about what to do with the rest of the day. He flopped down on the small wicker couch, sighing as he did. “Uhh… He wasn't much for doing anything so the question was of disarming. “I ain't got any ideas. You?”

She had noticed his… predicament... at the spa, but said nothing. It had been a bit surprising to say the least because Serilda couldn’t think what may have set him into that kind of a state, particularly knowing that he didn’t like others touching him. The reaction had nothing to do with the masseuse, she knew that for certain, but it was still a bit shocking. What could have possibly driven him to that state?

Thankfully for Mythal, they were in a public place with only a couple minutes to put their clothes back on before people would come to collect them so she just left it alone. But the knowledge of it was still in her head as they traveled back to their rental space. He hadn’t been very physically affectionate toward her lately, and Serilda assumed it was due to stress. He’d had a lot happen lately, things that were sure to shake anyone off balance. She hadn’t tried to initiate anything with him because it didn’t really seem appropriate given everything, but now she was starting to wonder if maybe it would be a good way to relieve some stress. Among other things, of course.

As she let the hounds outside, leaving the door open enough for them to return when they were ready, he conceded that he was glad to have gone. Professional massages weren’t exactly something he wanted to make a regular occurance, but if he really needed the help he might be open to doing it again. “As long as you’re feeling better from it,” she told him with a soft smile. “I definitely needed it. Thank you for humoring me.”

There wasn’t really anything in particular that sounded of interest to him to do, which was about what she was expecting. He usually enjoyed himself whenever they went out and about, but Mythal wasn’t really much for being a tourist or engaging in a lot of social activities. He sat down on the couch and stated he didn’t have any ideas, leaving it open for her to make a suggestion. Serilda gave it a little thought and decided to be a little more bold than she usually was.

She walked over as if to join him on the couch, but instead of sitting beside him she carefully lowered herself onto his lap, facing him with her legs on either side of his hips. “Well,” Serilda said, slipping her arms around his neck and giving him a small smile. “We don’t necessarily have to go out or anything. We’ve earned some time to just sit and relax, and I can think of a couple of things we could do here…” Her voice was quiet and intimate as she made the suggestion, face close enough to his that by the time she finished talking her lips would have already met his for a lingering kiss.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal was glad that she felt better, and she stated as much. “Ain’t no thing,” he said, waving off her thanks with a thin smile. In the long run, it had been a far easier course to travel than to deny the opportunity. And honestly, he did feel better so it had worked out in his and her’s favors. He was more than happy to sit down on the couch though and let his muscles simply rest, absorbing the refreshed energy that had been kneaded into them. Though she did seem interested in doing something and, never being the one to have any interests, he had left the opportunity up to her to provide one.

She chose a path he hadn’t expected. She walked over, almost like she was going to sit down next to him. But rather than do that, she put both her legs on either side of his and straddled him, resting herself easily on his lap. His eyes widened a bit as she stared at her, trying not to look too damn shocked. Weeks ago, this kind of attitude would have been more than welcome. In fact, he would have cherished the motion. But even as she got comfortable on him, his mind was back to work. This wasn’t right; she was attempting to make a move on him and he clearly wasn’t doing enough to deny her offers. Hadn’t he decided to give them space so she could start to get over him?

Easier said than done and unfortunately, that same flavor of air entered his nose again as she got close to him. Why was this smell such a stimulant? He listened to her quietly as she put the offer forward – to simply stay here and relax, and perhaps take part in slightly less relaxing actions as well. He opened his mouth partly to say something but her lips were on his before he could make a sound, her smell and taste already attempting to siphon his senses and blind him to his truths. Gods and did he let it linger; relishing in the feeling of kissing her again. She’d be able to tell just how he felt about that too.

But this couldn’t be. He put his hands on her sides and gently pulled her back, trying to do so without throwing her off. He didn’t want her to feel like he was disgusted with her or anything. But… “Listen…” he said softly, pushing arousal back down in its corner so he could speak from wisdom, as fragmented as it was. “With everything goin’ on with Gren… I don’t think now is the best time,” he explained the half-truth, his eyes almost meeting hers but not quite. “Too much goin’ on in my head,” he told her, now speaking the full truth.

He offered a small but pitiful smile as an apology. “Sorry. I hate to be downer. I just don’t feel like my heart would be in it and that’s not fair to you,” he sighed as his head dropped against the couch’s back cushion. “How ‘bout a walk? We didn’t get much time to spend on the beach yesterday. I’m sure the pups would enjoy it.” It was a ridiculous segue but it was all he could think of. It was tearing his mind and heart in half to deny her but it was the right thing to do and he knew it.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

She didn’t think too much about the surprised look on his face when she sat down on his lap. Serilda hadn’t exactly been the most forward in this relationship thus far, physically, as she was still coming to her own in that regard and finding her footing with it. The last couple weeks had been rough for them emotionally given everything with Gren, and while yesterday had man handled them physically it had done much to release tension on both their parts. Between the fighting and getting stress out of their systems, and the massages to bring them back down again, Serilda thought that maybe it was an acceptable time for them to find some peace and comfort in one another, physically.

For a moment it seemed like he felt the same way, returning the kiss and letting it last on his lips. She could sense the desire coming from him, which made it all the more confusing when he suddenly placed his hands on her side, not to bring her closer but to gently pull her back. There was a slightly puzzled look on her face as he did so, an expression that quickly transformed into what could best be described as embarrassment or shame as she listen to him speak. Well, she’d gone and screwed that right up, hadn’t she? Serilda had misread the mood and in so doing ruined what little peace they had gained.

A bit ashamed of herself, she gave him a nod and a weak smile, but there would be no mistaking the emotions she was trying to mask. “It’s okay,” Serilda told him softly when he tried to apologize. “I understand, and I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to… impose.” She was having an equally hard time meeting his eyes, feeling deeply that there was more going on here than either of them were saying but not entirely sure what was going on or what to make of it just yet. Strong emotions of sorrow started to claw their way up her throat, and she did her best to push them back. “I know that you’ve been stressed from everything. I just… wish I knew how to comfort you.”

She felt like she was failing him in a way, but more than that the noblewoman had been feeling more than a little insecure since Gren had shown up, given that Mythal hadn’t so much as kissed her since all of this started. The last time he’d shown her any affection at all had been after Christmas and, given how powerful that moment had been, the lack of it now was a bit stunning. Serilda wasn’t so clueless as to not recognize that there was a distance there, but she was having trouble figuring out its source. Something about all this just wasn’t setting right, wasn’t making sense to her, but Serilda couldn’t put her finger on it.

He suggested a walk with the hounds, and she gave him another forced smile and a nod. “I’m sure they’d appreciate that,” she agreed, but it was clear that she hadn’t quite let go of whatever had just happened, nor was she quite ready to drop it right yet. Still sitting on his lap -- albeit leaned back a little -- she bit her lip a bit in the way she always seemed to do when she was trying to work up courage to ask or say something that she was afraid to.

Very quietly, her blue eyes still having difficulty meeting his, she meekly asked him, “Are you upset with me? About what happened?” Serilda wasn’t crying, but there was a shakiness to her soft tone that betrayed she was struggling to fight back the desire to do so. There was a sense of guilt about her that she hadn’t been able to shake since she had learned the truth of who she’d met, and the only conclusion she could draw was that he was distancing himself from her because he was associating her with the sudden return of his adoptive father. Realizing a bit how the question sounded, she added, “I’m not... trying to make this about me, because it’s not. It just feels like…”

Her voice trailed off as she tried to think of the words to describe what she was feeling, and came up short. Subconsciously she was recognizing that he was pushing her away for some reason, but Serilda hadn’t quite reached an active awareness of it just yet. All she knew was the beginning pangs of a familiar sense of pain and loneliness that she hadn’t felt in quite some time. The mage wanted nothing more than to put all her focus on him and do everything in her power to give him what he needed, and what he wanted, but a part of her just couldn’t shake away that there was something else going on here.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Gods, what he wouldn’t give to be anywhere but here right now? But at the same time, there wasn’t anyone else he wanted to be but near her. It was a dilemma that made no sense and was maddening the more it ebbed and flowed within him. The honor of being front row seated to her starting confusion, then her absolute embarrassment. He attempted to explain it in a way that made the most sense, that disarmed the moment without offending her. But he had still managed to accomplish that anyways; the Voidwalker apologizing and taking the blame on herself. “No, it’s not… he started and then sighed, more frustrated with himself now. This was falling apart before him like a crumbling building and he didn’t know how to save the pieces. He’d never been good with people and it was there, right on the face of things, right now.

He fell silent, unsure of what to say. Whatever he said was going to make things worse, weren’t they? He simply stared forward, lost in his own misery and frustration as each one of them tried to find words or feelings or… really anything. There was something there, palpable and virulent and she would no doubt sense it. She may not have been able to identify it right away but she could feel its presence, its pressure on both their shoulders. Perhaps that’s why she couldn’t just let it go. Her features squirmed a little, as she tried to work up the courage to say or ask something. All Mythal could do was barely meet her gaze as she finally asked him if he was upset with her?

“No, no,” he said softly and mournfully, shaking his head. His hands, still on her arms, tightened a little around the limbs. “You’ve done nothin’ wrong. You never have. All you’ve been is a reliable person, someone I could trust – the only one I can trust. There’s just been so much goin’ on that I can’t get my head on straight,” he explained pitifully, telling her the honest truth as much as he was willing to. It would be so much easier if he could pretend that she had done something – put on the ruse that he was offended and he didn’t want to be around her. But despite how much he wanted to resist his love for her, he couldn’t do that. He couldn’t hurt her in such a way, not after everything that had happened with her former husband’s death. He may have feared his feelings for her but she was still his friend and he cherished that.

“Just… havin’ you with me is enough,” he said softly, finally lifting the crimson orbs to look at her fully. “I know that sounds pathetic but… it makes it easier, knowin’ I have my friend her to keep me goin’ forward. You don’t need to do anythin’.” It was yet another truth that hurt to tell but he couldn’t keep it in. He couldn’t just leave her to paddle uselessly in the waters of her confusion and self-doubt without offering help. It wasn’t much, barely a lifesaver, but maybe it would be enough to keep her from drowning – at least in that moment.
