Hello everyone! Today, a new legal organization is returning, something familiar to most members: The Rune Knights! Review details below to learn more about Fiore's Military Police force.

The Rune Knights; Back in Blue! RK_ting_v3

The Rune Knights: Who are they?

The Magic Council: The supreme government that rules over Fiore and oversees its guilds. But the vassals that serve as Fiore’s Judge, Jury, and Executioners are the Rune Knights, the military subdivision of the Magic Council.

The responsibilities of Rune Knights are similar to the police of other nations: to carry out and execute the ideals of justice set by the Magic Council and to investigate cases related to all things Magic and crime. They patrol all over Fiore and any of the Council’s territory, have garrisons established all over the nation, and are known to be the face of an ideal military unit.

The Rune Knights: The Twin Branches

While it is a simple task to join the Rune Knights, it is the particulars that matter. The Rune Knights have two branches recruits can join: The Combat Corps and the Special Operations Corps, both of which serve a significant purpose in the function of the Rune Knights.

The Combat Corps: The Combat Corps is the public face of the Rune Knights. These are the uniformed soldiers that are known to sweep in during public incidents in an effort to try and establish order. They are the most well-known branch of the Knights, often being what the general populous think of when they picture the Rune Knights.

The Special Operations Corps: The Spec Ops are the soldiers of the Knights that deal in more covert or behind-the-scenes operations. These soldiers don’t usually go around advertising themselves as Rune Knights, knowing sometimes that secrecy is best for achieving their goals. They often focus more on the tougher jobs that may require hard decision making for the greater good.

    The Rune Knight Hierarchy

When joining Fiore’s military, members are automatically given one of two ranks: Recruit and Private. When joining the Rune Knights, all members are assigned the rank of Recruit, regardless of rank and can only be promoted to Private once posting an Introduction Thread at the Rune Knight Headquarters or one of their many garrisons. After acquiring Private, the following ranks can be achieved in this order: Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and General.

To achieve the rank ahead, members must commit themselves to activity, contribution to the Rune Knights, job completion, ranking up, and/or examinations. With steady commitment, anyone can achieve these ranks except for General, as they have limited spaces available.

    The Rune Knight Headquarters (Location)

The Rune Knights have garrisons placed all over Fiore, but their Headquarters (HQ) are located on a plateau in Era that can be seen far above over the area. These garrisons contain barracks, armories, and reception areas for the common people to come in and speak with Rune Knights. Prisons are normally nearby, if not part of these garrisons.

    The Rune Knight Uniform

As Rune Knights, it is expected to dress for the job. When recruited into this militant police force, Knights are offered a variety of black coats and suits that signify their position within the force. It is required to be worn in all formal and on-duty occasions. Only Field Marshals have access to an attire that includes the official Rune Knight cloak. In addition to their uniform, all Rune Knights are given small, metal pendants in the shape of the Rune Knight emblem that can be issued in the form of a bracelet, necklace, or keychain that further signifies their authority as a Rune Knight, and serves as a sort of legitimate badge.

    The Criminal Justice System

As a ne’er-do-well or dark mage, it is common to commit bad deeds or crimes during their time as one. However, if caught or captured by a Rune Knight, Bounty Hunter, or Good Samaritan, such activities do not go unpunished. When arrested by a Rune Knight, a person can be charged with a crime that falls under either Petty Misdemeanors, Misdemeanors, Gross Misdemeanors, or Felonies.

    Petty Misdemeanors (PM, Common)

Petty misdemeanors are the most common type of criminal offense that occurs in the commonplace. Being charged with a petty misdemeanor is usually the result of actions such as: trespassing, vandalism, petty theft, disorderly conduct, assault (such as punching someone), etc. Persons who are charged with a petty misdemeanor must pay a fine of 10,000 jewels and/or serve a punishment job appropriate to the offense.

    Misdemeanors (Uncommon)

Misdemeanors are the next step above a PM, in which these criminal offenses are less common them but result in more serious penalties. Being charged with a misdemeanor is normally the result of graffiti, certain types of assault, theft, criminal mischief, terroristic threats, etc. Persons who are charged with a misdemeanor must pay a fine of 25,000 jewels and/or serve a punishment job appropriate to the offense.

    Gross Misdemeanors (GM, Rare)

Gross Misdemeanors are more serious than a misdemeanor, but not quite enough to be considered a felony. Being charged with a Gross Misdemeanor is normally the result of an aggravated assault, theft of valuable items, the solicitation of illegal drugs, etc. Persons who are charged with a Gross Misdemeanor must pay a fine of 50,000 jewels and/or serve a punishment job appropriate to the offense.

    Felony (FY, Common)

Felonies are the worst sort of criminal offense any person can commit. Being charged with a felony is often the result of murder, manslaughter, arson, kidnapping, treason, animal cruelty, sale or manufacturing of illegal drugs, etc. Persons who are charged with a felony must pay a fine of 100,000 jewels and/or serve a punishment job appropriate to the offense. (Holders of “Eleven Sinners” or “Coming Storm Positions” are automatically charged with felonies)

    Punishment Jobs

Punishment jobs are jobs specifically designed as a result of being charged with a criminal assault and being arrested by authorized Rune Knights. These sorts of jobs do not reward jewels and can range from simple community service to intense labor camps.

These jobs follow all job word counts according to the rank(s) of the person(s) involved. Rune Knights may be present within the thread but cannot contribute to the thread word count and the job will not be increased to a group word count if this happens. Jewel and experience increasing items or effects cannot be used in Punishment Jobs.

    Alternative Penalties

If any person charged with one of the four degrees of criminal offenses is, for whatever reason, unable to pay a fine or serve a punishment job, the following alternative options can be considered:

    Jail Time

If an offender cannot fulfill any demands before this point, they must serve jail time. The penalties are as following:

    Petty Misdemeanor500 words, without supervision
    Misdemeanor1,000 words, with supervision
    Gross Misdemeanor1,500 words, with supervision
    Felony2,000 words, with supervision

All word counts are increased by 50% for every repeated offense (First jailing for a felony is 2,000 words, second jailing is 3,000, fourth jailing is 4,500). If any offense is repeated or someone is jailed with a criminal history, supervision is required. During this time period, offenders cannot take jobs or thread with others (in threads that take place after the penalty is assigned) until they have served their sentence. If jailed with supervision, a Rune Knight must be present within the thread. Jail time may be given to an offender without a fine or a punishment job depending on their offense and the specifics of their case.

    Jailbreak

When jailed by the Rune Knights, it is easier to serve your time. But possibly to others, it is easier to break out. But be mindful, this option involves Player versus Player interaction if supervised!

Every jailed offender is given the opportunity to roll the “Prison Break” dice only once during their sentence. If the break is successful, offenders may break out of their cell and engage with the supervising Knights until they have successfully left the Rune Knight Jailing Facility. If the offender’s break is successful, but are defeated by the supervising Rune Knight(s), the sentencing is increased by 50%. If the break is a failure, the sentencing continues.

    Reinforcements

When jailed, it isn’t completely unrealistic or impossible that your friends or acquaintances might lend you a helping hand in your prison escape. Captives may roll the “Reinforcements” dice to determine whether or not other player characters can participate in the thread to aid them.

    Captive RankReinforcement Limit
    D/C-rankUp to three reinforcements
    B/A-rankUp to two reinforcements
    S-rank and aboveOne reinforcement
Jailbreak is considered a criminal felony and all characters who assist in a jailbreak are charged with felonies. Therefore, an unsuccessful jailbreak that results in jailing shall follow the word count of a felony, including the original captive. The original captive, however, subtracts the word count they have completed for their original sentencing from the felony word count and will complete that instead. Player characters who enter the thread as reinforcements may exit the thread at any point, but cannot return. Should this happen, the original captive cannot replace their reinforcement. If the jailbreak is unsuccessful, all reinforcements are also jailed, serve individual sentences, and cannot summon reinforcements.

    Debt
In the event that a person is penalized with a fine but cannot pay it, 25% of all jewel rewards from any source can and will be deducted until their debt is paid.

    Extended Supervision

In the event that a person is penalized with a fine and/or a punishment job, but cannot fulfill either demand, depending on the criminal offense, the offender can choose to complete jobs and go about their routines under the supervision of an authorized Rune Knight. When taking extended supervision, fines and punishment jobs can be avoided but the authorized Rune Knight may take part in private threads and jobs for a set amount of time depending on the criminal offense. If the offender refuses this as well, they will be given jail time.

    Petty MisdemeanorOne thread
    MisdemeanorThree threads
    Gross MisdemeanorFive threads
    FelonyTen threads

If the offender commits another crime during the duration of their extended supervision, their supervision duration resets. If the supervising Rune Knight goes inactive, leaves the Rune Knights, or otherwise disappears, contact another member of the Rune Knights to fill their position. If this is still not able to be done, a Non-playable Character (NPC) will fulfill the role until the offender has completed their Supervision. The NPC is used solely by the Rune Knights and anything done to them must be consulted about with a Rune Knight.

    Bounties

Bounties are jewel rewards offered to any person who turns in the person the bounty is assigned to. These jewel amounts are accumulated based on Out-of-Character (OOC) observations of a person’s In-Character (IC) or on-site position criminal offenses. Meaning, members of the Rune Knights may take the information they gather from reading topics and observing on-site position applicants and increase or decrease that character’s bounty. Bounties are calculated as follows:

    Criminal OffenseBounty Increase
    Petty Misdemeanor+10,000 jewels
    Misdemeanor+25,000 jewels
    Gross Misdemeanor+50,000 jewels
    Felony+100,000 jewels

Bounty rewards can only be claimed if the captor can reasonably substantiate their claims of the bountied person being guilty of a criminal offense ICly. Rune Knights cannot claim bounties or be rewarded jewels from those bounties. If multiple people work together to turn the bountied in, the bounty is evenly split between the captors unless the captors agree to do otherwise. Bounties can only be ICly acknowledged by the consent of the bountied person, as this system is meant to be an OOC incentive. Bounties can be decreased only by the jurisdiction of the Rune Knights and Staff.
