Matters of State [Job, Nessa] - Page 2 Empty Re: Matters of State [Job, Nessa]

Post by Nessa Cordelia Lux 23rd March 2019, 4:50 pm

Markus commented about his magic, and his family. Nessa's eyes softened at him, it seemed like a sensitive subject. She would've asked more, but she also didn't want to pry into something painful. So she stayed quiet, decided that this was not the time to stick her nose in where it didn't belong. If Markus wanted to tell him he would, but it was not her place to pry it out of him. She knew full well how hard it was, to open up about the painful things, in fact, she wasn't really sure she could do even now.

Nessa wasn't very adept at reading people, especially in 'intimate' circumstances. Yet for a moment, she got the feeling that Markus was as into the kiss as she was. Was she reading that wrong? She wasn't sure, she had always known that Rex liked it, because he tried to keep it going for as long as possible. But Markus had cut the kiss short, to address the woman. Even so, Nessa felt like if it hadn't been for the fact the woman was there. It might not have stopped so abruptly. She couldn't determine whether or not that would be a bad thing, it would be a confusing thing. Then again, it didn't really matter. Because they kiss had stopped. And the likelihood of it happening again, unless they decided to try and convince someone else they were a couple. Although she doubted it, she was sure Markus would have them move more cautiously after this to avoid the repeat of such an easy discovery.

Following the kiss, and Nessa's attempt to ease the woman's suspicion of them. It seemed that her reputation had spread even out here. Nessa was surprised, she honestly didn't think that would work, in fact, she doubted her status would have had any effect. She just figured she needed credible information in case the woman decided to look her up. But it didn't seem that was needed, the woman had heard of her. Nessa contained her relief, looking at the woman with a polite expression as she went on to accept their presence. Even going so far as to invite them to a gala. Nessa wasn't sure about that before she could even consider a response. Markus spoke, Nessa nodded her goodbye at the woman. Before allowing Markus to steer her away, she felt him pull her closer. She didn't resist, this was after all for show, yet still she couldn't help but be exceptionally aware of the warmth of his side against hers.

Finally, after a while of walking and once they were far enough from the woman named Victoria that she could no longer see them. Markus let her go, moving away to give her room. She heard his whisper and felt the blush rise to her cheeks a little. Yes, that what it was, just an idea. An idea that may have gotten a little out of hand, but still ended up being effective. She offered him a small smile, "Yeah well, I didn't have much time to come up with any other excuse for us being out there." She admitted. "Guess we did a good job convincing her huh," She said with a light laugh, her eyes fell to his lips, her thoughts lingering on the kiss they had just shared. It had been just an act right? Yet the way she felt even now like she could sink back into his arms and do it all over again. Maybe, I just miss the affection. She thought, trying to justify to herself why she had gotten so lost it. It made sense; she had been single for a long time. Dating itself was out of the question for the Saint of Purity, not because of her position or job, but more just... because she didn't know if she was ready. After Rex, any thoughts about dating filled her with a sense of anxiousness, a fear that she was going to get hurt again. Maybe, she really should consider dating at some point, then perhaps she wouldn't get so flustered by Markus. Not Markus though, he didn't see her that way. He'd made that quite clear that night all those months ago, he couldn't love, right? So even considering him was pointless and would probably just be painful for her. She knew that much at least.

But still... it had felt really nice.

The prospect of getting to do it again was, a tantalizing one to say the least. Nessa brought her gaze away, clearing her through. Still, she couldn't think like this; they were after all. Just friends. And this was just a mission, a mission that had required them to convince a woman they were a couple, which had required them to display a convincing kiss. This attempt to rationalize these thoughts reminded her that she was still in the middle of the mission with Markus. She returned her gaze to him, sighing, "So what's the plan now? How do you wanna approach this?" She asked, in a more relaxed tone.

In truth, the chaos mage could not understand why his mind was wondering. Their interaction was just a kiss, a trifle, a ruse. It had meant nothing, and odds were would never happen again. In truth, he had probably pushed it too far, and Nessa was too nice to have said anything. Though, if anything he had learned just how much she had grown since his departure, most likely it had meant nothing to her. Besides, it was not like it was his first kiss, hell in the grand scheme of things it wasn’t even that eventful, far less involved than the last kiss they shared. Yet, somehow, this seemed to mean more.

Markus listened as she spoke, to preoccupied to look at her, perhaps see some hint to what she was thinking. Instead he kept his gaze forward. She spoke about her plan, the way she worked on her feet, her laugh at how convening they were. In true, everything she said proved Markus’ thought process, she agreed the entire situation was just that, a ruse, a convincing lie. Markus pushed the thought from his head, it was over, done, ended. There was no need to dwell upon the events when so much had to be done. They had almost lost their chance, and had to be more careful moving forward. If they were seen again, they wouldn’t be able to play it off. Victoria, Markus knew, would remember them, he wondered how long it would be before his parents heard about the Wizards Saint that had graced Bellam. In fact, Markus could see it now, his fathers head clicking, turning, plotting. It had been years since he had seen the mad, but to this day Markus feared that mind of his. Always plotting, always planning, always trying to get forward in life, push the Eldridge name. In truth, Markus was happy to have never been apart of that life, and after what he had done, they had been happy to let him leave. Markus was sure of it.

He was not looking at her when she spoke, his eyes were scanning the horizon, the trees. Even though it had been years, he knew this forest well, it was the one place he used to feel safe. Cocking his head, Markus thought about what she said. What she asked. The plan? In truth, there was no plan. If Markus was alone, he would confront the family, and perhaps die as his rage took over. This time however, things were different, he was not alone, he had someone to watch out for… and, she needed to know the truth.

He would reach out his hand, and touch her face, his eyes still looking away from her. His face a mask, a canvas, devoid and trained, as it has always been. Then, he let his hand drop, and took a deep breath. His eyes would turn upwards as they looked directly into the eyes of his companion. This time, probably for the first time, he held nothing back, he did not hide his emotion, his fear, his rage. The once blank, expressionless eyes of the Chaos Mage would be filled with an ocean of doubts, and currents of emotions. Releasing his breath, he would speak to Nessa. His voice was quiet, louder than a whisper but not by much. His tone was nothing like hers, his was iron, sharp, far from relaxed.

“Before we continue, there are things you should know.” Markus would start. “I took this job for one reason, and that is because despite everything we are taught as mages… This is personal.” Markus was talking slowly, thinking out every word. His eyes never left Nessa’s. “My name is Markus William Eldridge, Second Son to Victor and Maria Eldridge. Lost heir, and…” Markus paused, in truth he always hated titles, and could think of only one that truly spoke volumes. “Mistake to the Eldridge Family. Victoria was my sister, and we are going to free slaves which belong to my parents.”

Markus' eyes would flash with a chaotic energy, as his rage threatened his sanity, and a single tear would roll down his cheek.

She eyed him as she looked around, she could see he was scanning the area. Most likely coming up with a place for what to do, at least this had been what Nessa suspected. Markus had always been good with a plan, quick on his feet and a talented mage. She didn't doubt his ability to get the job done for a second, nor did she ever expect him to show any signs of doubt. But as he reached out, she became still, feeling his soft touch against her face. Slowly his dark eyes moved to hers, and in them, she saw something she had never seen from the Chaos mage before. It was hard to describe what was there, but she felt it; the anger, the fear, all held in his gaze. It was hard to see, and yet she could not drag her eyes away.

And when he spoke, she felt her heart breaking for him. His voice was soft, as he slowly told her the truth behind the mission and about who he was. So he was, as she suspected an Eldridge. She hadn't been sure, she thought she knew his surname, and when she read the paper she noticed the similarity, but she hadn't considered that conclusive enough. But now she knew, and as it turned out she had also... just met his sister. Which was another wave of shock, she had just met his sister, and acted like...well a harlot. But then... his sister didn't even know who he was. Is that what he meant by 'Lost heir'? all of these thoughts were flooding her. But she couldn't focus on them right now, because as his eyes lit up with that chaotic magical energy that only seemed to occur when he was filled with rage, she found herself pulled out of all senseless thought. As her eyes fell of the sight on the single tear that rolled down his cheek. She no longer cared, her body moved on it's own, she stepped in close. She reached up with her own hands, she raised them to his face, placing her fingers gently against his cheeks. She began to speak; her voice was soft, and her delicate"Okay," She whispered, the word held all of her feelings, how much to cared, her acceptance and understanding. She paused before repeating the word again,"Okay," It wasn't a lot, but the conviction behind these words, she hoped would calm him. She tiptoed slightly, pressed her forehead against his, she used her thumb to wipe away the tear from his cheek. "I'm here Markus, and whatever it is we need to do. I will stand by you. We'll do this okay, together. It's gonna be okay." She wanted to cry with him, seeing him like this, it made her ache inside. Yet, she wouldn't allow herself to crumble, she needed to be strong for him. At this moment, all of the silly complications, and all of the confusion about how she felt, It didn't matter. All she knew was that she cared for him, and she wanted nothing more than to help him right now. She stepped back, giving him a little space, she took the hand that was touching her face and squeezed it. Her expression grew serious, as she spoke this time, her voice was filled with a firm determination.

"If we're going to free the slaves, we'll have to find the more discreet way to get as close as we can to them. Do you..." She paused for a moment, wondering whether she should really ask the question she intended. It was clearly a sensitive matter, but they couldn't really progress unless she knew. She decided she would ask, because she wanted him to know she was prepared to help him. "Do you know where they might be kept?" She asked him, she knew it wouldn't be easy for him to recall such things. It would likely pull up memories that he might not want to face, but she hoped her direct addressing of the mission would help him push past that. "We'll have to be stealthy, and we'll have to take into account how many slaves there will be." She thought for a moment. This was no easy feat, planning to rescue an unconfirmed number of people and transport them as far from Bellum as possible before ...their owners, realised it seemed nearly impossible. Even if they somehow managed to help them escape discreetly, as soon as they realised they were gone there would likely be search parties all over trying to track them down. It would make leaving Bellum difficult. It was then an idea popped into her mind, something so simple shwas surprised it took her so long to think of it. "If we can get in, I can open a portal to Valhalla, we can get ourselves and the slaves out pretty quickly. We just need to get close enough to do it," She said, her eye had lit up slightly. "This could work, there is plenty of room in Valhalla, they'll be safe there. Plus the Valkyries can provide food and clothing for the Slaves if need be. Once we escape, it will be just a matter of re-opening a portal to the guild and contacting the authorities once we are there." Her eyes softened slightly, as she stopped. This had to be so hard for him, he probably wanted to do this alone. Yet, she had forced herself along, and now he was telling her things she'd never expect to hear from him.

"I suppose you didn't expect to see her so soon after we got here huh?" She added, "She is... so beautiful, your sister." She told him honestly, and now that she thought about it. She could really see the resemblance. It pained her to know that he had such pain, and that term he'd used for himself, 'mistake'. It was such an awful word to describe yourself with, was this his thoughts or the thoughts of others? Either way, she wanted to wipe the word from existence, because she could never look at Markus as a mistake. To her, he was the farthest thing from that.

Markus froze when he felt her step up to him, close the distance he had created only moments ago, stepping close enough for them to embrace, if that was what they desired. His eyes widened as he felt her reach up, her hands clasp around his face, framing the line of his jaw. When she spoke, it was sweat, soft, delicate. Markus was not sure, but he knew there was something behind the single word, something wordless, something empty. Without saying it, she accepted him, understood him, believed in him. Someone who, up until now, she never really knew.

Then. The word was repeated. Louder, stronger, resolute. Markus could feel her conviction, feel her absolution, and understand her decision. His eyes could not leave hers, his mouth was open slightly, a wordless thanks upon his lips. Something he could not bring himself to say. He felt as her thumb glided up his cheek, and could feel the wet remains of his pain be wiped away. His eyes stayed glued to hers as she grew closer, he forehead pressing against his, her eyes looking into his. Once more, he was silent as she spoke. As the words tumbled out, not in uncertainty, or confusion, but in absolution. He sighed sharing her breath in a way far more intimate than any kiss they had shared, this time he shared a promise. A secret. A vow. Somehow, she was with him. Somehow, it would be okay.

When Markus had found this job in the basement, he had decided that he would die if it meant saving this woman, and harming his family. Now, suddenly, the chaos mage wished to live.

Markus watched as she stepped back, loosing the distance they had just shared. His breath left his chest with her, and he took another. Any sadness that once lay within his eyes would have been wipe free, and doubt cleared. For the first time, the chaos mage felt wanted, felt safe. He kept his hand in hers as she grew serious, as she spoke again. Markus could see the Ace and Wizard Saint she had grown to become. Markus could see the light even in his own shadow. Her father was right, she did have a way about her.

Markus wondered how things would have been, were he to grow up in the same way, with the same sort of father? The man he knew as his father was cruel, vindictive, and resolute. He cared only for his name, and that of his family. His fist was firm, and his retribution resolute. Markus’ deepest scare was a memento of that man’s anger. Markus knew, given the chance Victor would make them pay, he would not kill them, not out right. And, if he were to learn of Nessa’s connections… Markus knew, no matter what, even if it killed him. He would have to keep her safe.

Suddenly, Markus heard a voice within his mind. ‘It seems, you are ready to let them go. I told you, your connection to your past would be the death of you…’ The voice was quiet, calming, almost kind. ‘Who would have known, it would have been her that pushed you forward. Go forth Progeny, go forth and conquer.’ The voice seemed to fade away, as if being dipped into water.

Markus heard Nessa speak again, and could feel the hesitation in her voice. He did not hesitate, he knew exactly where they would be, at least… he knew where they were ten years ago. “The ‘servants’ are housed in the back of the estate, and use the special entrances to get in and out without bothering the household or its guests.” Markus said, while describing the grounds to the female mage. The Eldridge Estate was a massive property on a large amount of land, and multiple buildings. The main of which was on a raised plot of land. Visitors were forced to walk through an open area with fountains and pool, and in the forests to the back of the house would hide the rundown buildings, and jail like domiciles that made up the servants’ quarters, and Markus’ old room.

Markus Nodded when she spoke about being stealthy. “The best bet would be to use this forest, it is not far from the estate, and go in through the back. We will have to avoid magical protection, and not use much of our power while traveling. But I know a few… Paths that should be safe. In fact, seeing Victoria was a blessing. If she was in these forests, that means the old escape routes we used are still viable.” Markus said, his mind now fully into the mission. It was easier that way, focusing on what needed to be done. When Markus spoke about how many slaves there would be, he once more spoke up.

“Remember, our job is to save one girl, and we will need to find her. She might be working at the event, or with the rest of them. However, if we can save more, I would not object. Anything to hurt my father, and his ‘name’.”
Markus said, venom in his voice. As he listened to Nessa he ended up nodding along with her a portal would be the perfect option. However, there were things he knew she did not understand. Things he would have to explain. Markus knew how Bellam worked, and knew not all of the ‘slaves’ thought themselves as such.

“Nessa… Remember… I found this job in the ‘basement’ Markus added in phases to the words, he knew she knew about the darker side of Fairy Tail, and knew if fact what they were doing was illegal. “We cannot alert the Authorities, as far as Bellam is concerned these people are… Servants. Indentured wastes of space. My ‘family’ is saving them, giving them jobs they would have otherwise. In Bellam… being born without magic makes you nothing, less than nothing, at best you are in for a labor job, at worse… entertainment.” Markus said, trying to explain the culture of his nation. Markus remembered telling her he was born without magic, perhaps it would help explain why being a member of such an esteemed family, and having such an ‘affliction’, made him a mistake. “Many of them will not believe we are doing right, some of them might even try to stop us… it might not be possible to save everyone.” Markus finished.

When he heard her ask about his sister Markus let out a sigh. She was beautiful, that was for sure. Ten years has done her well. Though, he could see the taint of his family upon her, and was saddened that she was now alone. “Thanks… It has been many years sense I have seen her. She has grown marvelously, and I have no doubt she will have been trained by the best… Nessa… The Eldridge Family is so powerful, and so venerated into society, because of their magic. They are a line of Elementalists with great power… if we have to stop them, it will not be easy… And we can not hold back.” Markus said looked directly into Nessa’s eyes. His own still masked with rage, yet more solid, more resolute.

It did not take them long to reach the Estate, Markus stopped the group when they could see it through the trees, and he pointed out the main house, the servers quarters, and the training grounds. The rest would be hidden to the front, hopefully something they would never see.

Before they went forward Markus would stop Nessa and speak once more. “Nessa… My father is vindictive, and powerful. He can NOT know you were involved, otherwise the magical council will hear about it, and we will be labeled as rogue mages interfering with another countries economy.” Markus was already pulling off his scarf and hood. For a brief moment Markus eyes were dark as he looked at the fabric, once more tears would threaten to fall. Then, he would wrap it around her, the black looking far darker against her white clothes.

“My… My brother gave me this. It will mask your face and magical signature.” Markus said, not looking at Nessa.

    “Hold onto it for me.”

At that moment, Nessa hoped that Markus would accept her words, her acknowledgement. She feared that in he would push her away, dismiss her comments. But he didn't, or at least; she felt that at that moment. He understood her promise, and he accepted it. It was though all the emotions that lingered in the air had solidified into forming a connection. Something that would link the two, more indefinitely that any drunken kiss or bashful shyness was this moment. She felt relief sweep through her as he seemed to calm down. The rage disappated and the intensity settled as he listened to her. He would answer her question without hesitation. She nodded, so at least they wouldn't have any trouble finding the slaves. It was a bittersweet fortune that Markus was so familiar with this place. Nessa completely trusted him in leading her there. He continued on, between them they seem to formulate a plan. This was good; they were going to move forward with the job. His newly-founded focus in his words gave Nessa a sense of encouragement.

His next comment brought her back; she perhaps had gotten a little carried away with the concept of 'rescuing the slaves' and forgotten the nature of the job. Despite Sorano having taught her quite some time ago about the 'darker' nature of Fairy Tail. The Saint of Purity so easily found herself forgetting this fact. The way she looked at Fairy Tail, was that it was basically doing the work of legal mages. Yet, even so. When she went through the jobs and had to sift through what was publically available to guild members and only available to members with basement accent, she was subtlety reminded of the guilds true nature. Markus, was of course, on that list in the basement of Fairy Tail, meaning he had access to such jobs. He went on to explain further as to why the authorities could not be brought into this mission. Nessa felt herself grow slightly angry by his revelation. It was shocking to know that people like this existed, in her time in Fairy Tail. Nessa had grown to understand more about the cruelty of humanity, of those whose minds were twisted by evil thoughts or concepts. Making decisions based on greed or hate regardless of how it affected others, the entitlement they seemed to fester and enact on the undeserving.

"I understand... I'm sorry; I forgot." She replied, there was once a time where Nessa would have fought on this idea — believing that regardless of these peoples with status's that the authorities would really be able to step in and help. But she had a different understanding of certain matters now. Things were not always black and white, but there was a certain amount of grey one needed to work with. "Okay, we'll we can keep them at Fairy Tail until we find a means of relocating them safely, I could see if we have spare rooms in the Fairy Hills. If there's any sign of danger, we can move them to the Haven of Reflection until things blow over." She commented, hoping this would be an acceptable solution.

As the conversation moved onto her sister, Nessa listened softly. Although his face didn't really express it, his words seemed almost affectionate. Although as he spoke about his families magics, his words seemed to relay a warning to Nessa. That should they come to face members of his family, then this would not be an easy fight, and she was not to hesitate. She thought back to that day when he had killed those Fairy Hunters so easily. He had then shown no restraint, and somehow she believed she would see even less of it should the situation arise today. She nodded once more, mentally preparing herself for what she may have to bear witness to in due time. She just hoped that Markus didn't lose himself completely.

A short time later they arrived at the Estate, having managed to move quickly through the forest. Nessa had followed close behind Markus, careful trying to suppress her magic as much as she could to stop anyone sensing her magical signature. The estate itself was magnificent, Nessa was sure that in the day, it would likely a very beautiful place. But she couldn't focus on the scenery right now. Only keep an eye on if anyone was nearby or approaching. They came to a stop, during which Markus would turn to her. For the first time, he spoke of his father and the kind of man he was. It seemed that Markus didn't want Nessa's identity revealed. It was strange because this wasn't something she had to take into consideration before. But after all, she was the Ace of Fairy Tail and a Wizard Saint; she guessed that her recognisable identity would provide a risk to Fairy Tail, should she make herself an enemy of a powerful man. She nodded, understanding the necessity of hiding herself from view to protect the guild.

What Markus did next threw Nessa completely, he pulled off her scarf and hood. Leaning closer to her, he wrapped it around her suddenly. He did not meet her gaze as he told her the purpose of the clothes and who that belonged to. One thing she hadn't forgotten in her time away from Markus was what he had told her back at the bar that day, about his brother losing his life. She gulped, trying to hold her resolve. She looked at him with a determined gaze.

"Okay." She said once more, as though reflecting her earlier promise, pulling it a little tighter over herself, so she was covered. The cloak and scarf were warm from where it had been covering Markus. It was nice. She looked at him, reaching out, she touched his arm softly.

"Remember Markus, whatever happens, I'm here."
