a tempest's tale: unexalted fear
MASTERY
"Control thy emotions to control thy strength!"
Dust whistled along an open road. Villages that surrounded the infamous Mt. Hakobe were known for their frost-covered caps and agriculturally barren landscapes but this particular settlement looked like it'd popped right out the wild west. A tumbleweed bumped past a white-haired individual's feet as his footprints marked the very first sign of life or so it seemed.
Amagiri's presence seemed to mark the end of an area of desolation. His white cloak fluttered in the wind and the hood that covered his head and facial features threatened to blow from the tip of his scalp. The breeze was harsh but undeniably warm. Strange for a location that was overshadowed by a mountain that boasted it's snowy peak. Amagiri's blue jeans tightened around his legs as he took another step.
"You know, little one. I'm just as surprised as you are. This used to be the village of Valentine. A thriving settlement of commerce. People thrived here, profiteering left and right. Now it's bowed, bent, broken. I wonder where they went.." the demonic voice chuckled to itself. There was a tinge of sarcasm in his tone and it was evidential he knew more than he was letting on. Amagiri tried to banish the thought as he continued to walk but the crescendo of silence only fuelled his inquisitive nature.
"We were called here on a plea for help. Who called if they're all dead?"
The voice within him chuckled again. A darkened tone filled with malice.
"Or are they?"
A cowering silhouette flickered just inside Amagiri's view. The young mage spun around, his finger lifted towards the obscenity but nothingness had materialized in it's place.
Another shadow, this time staying in place for longer flickered in and out of Amagiri's view. The thing was becoming more daring, confident in it's ability to evade the wizard's field of vision.
"Who's there?" Amagiri loudly exclaimed to whoever it might be. "I'm not here to hurt you, I'm here to help."
The creature chuckled in response. It didn't sound human. It's tone was raspy, curdled and acidic. It's intentions weren't good, Amagiri could conceptualize that much. Identifying the creature however, given the speed at which it could move, would be a much harder task. With the silhouette's motives clear, Amagiri remained silent and hunched his back closer to the ground. Adopting his combative stance he began to think to himself.
Wasn't Rin meant to be here? I could really use a partner right now.
The young mage wasn't a great believer in the idea of jinxes. The notion that one could seal one's fate just by assuming the worst. This could have been one of those times to convince him otherwise. As soon as he'd spoken about the possibility of backup; another two silhouettes cleared his view. They moved swiftly and silently, once again evading identification through their speedy concealment. More raspy tones began to chuckle. They toyed with Amagiri as if they were eyeing up their prey.
"Show yourselves, cowards!" Amagiri exclaimed.
The words had barely left his lips when one of the silhouettes leaped from the shadows, a blade raised and aimed at the white hair that gracefully dangled down Amagiri's figure. A killing blow that Amagiri was slow to react to. Was his fate sealed?
