An ultimatum. The reason that pooled in her stomach like an unpleasant venom. Why was she here at the base of this horrid mountain? Well... It seemed that it was to join a guild. The demon that resided within her soul gave her one demand. She was to find the organization that hid at the top of Mt Hakobe, or the life he had saved would be taken. Not many were able to find this cursed place, since it seemed to be hidden quite well, and because of the horrible weather. But this wasn't going to stop Sonya. If her dearest brother was in danger, she would do anything in her power to save him. Pulling the dark cloak she wore over her pale face, the young woman pushed forward, entering the town that stood at the base of the mountain.

Pushing her cart full of birdcages, Sonya sighed quietly, noticing the strange looks that were being thrown her way. It wasn't every day people saw a shady looking woman with a slightly absurd amount of birdcages in tow. But there was no way that she was going anywhere without her companions. The birds might be a bit noisy, and a bit messy, and sometimes a bit rude, but they were like her children! They made her smile when she was sad, snuggled her when she was lonely, and protected her when she was in danger. She had to have them with her during this dark and unfamiliar time. Even if it meant she got a few weird looks from the village people, or sneers from the guild members she was about to meet. She assumed that they would be devious and unwelcoming, since they were a part of a dark guild.

Looking upwards towards the mountain's peak, she groaned, not really excited about dragging her cart up the dodgy looking terrain. The things she had to do now that she was no longer a "normal" girl. "Alright guys... Looks like it's about time to get climbing. Hold on to your tail feathers!" Her feathery companions gave her a small screech of acknowledgement, causing the blue haired female to smile warmly. Hopefully this day wouldn't be as awful as she imagined it to be.

A rare smile stretched across Aeluri’s face as she strolled down the trail that descended from Basilisk Fang’s formidable fortress. Cool mountain breezes caused long black hair to sway in the wind. Wildflowers dotted the hillside, a pleasantly colorful sight compared to the dull grays within the guild’s hallways. Leaves, grass, and branches rustled with the air movement, a constant visual of green motion. Small birds bickered in the trees, their noises drifting down from the heights. The fresh air and sounds of nature were bound to make anyone feel at peace despite the rugged appearance of the terrain.

Umbra bounced around the hillside beside the mage, running, leaping, and pouncing like a kitten on caffeine. Birds just barely missed his swiping claws as he chased them around. A change in scenery and new smells gave the black cat a plethora of energy, and he had no qualms with spending it all on a little fun! The two intended to stop in the town below their mountainous home to check out the new bakery that had opened up. It was rumored that they served cinnamon rolls, Aeluri’s favorite. The thought of a giant, warm cinnamon pastry caused her mouth to water and her pace to increase. She had to get there before they were sold out!

A chorus of loud squawks suddenly came from around the next corner of the trail. Such a loud noise would cause Umbra to jump into Aeluri’s arms in fright, his play at once forgotten. The mage slowed to a stop and the two looked at each other in confusion. The only birds that lived in the mountains were songbirds and raptors, not… parrots?

Around the bend came a female figure, toting a large cart full of bird cages. Dark blue hair covered one eye and a pale face, with similarly-colored eyes to match. She seemed to be lost in thought, trudging along with the heavy weight of bags and bird cages. What a peculiar person, Aeluri thought with a tilt of her head as she observed the approaching woman, earlier smile gone without a trace. Who on earth would own so many birds? Her eyes narrowed as the realization of the other’s path registered in her mind. The trail they both occupied only lead to the fortress above, which must be her destination.

Aeluri forgot her own purpose and planted herself in the middle of the path with determination. The other woman would not be allowed pass without a few questions first!

A sudden body appearing in front of her cart startled the blue haired mage. It was quite unexpected. Flinching backwards in an attempt to not collide with the stranger, the cape that had been sheltering her identity slid backwards, jostling the short, blue locks that hid beneath it. Eyes swirling from blue to a crimson red, Sonya looked up, surprise apparent on her normally neutral face. Standing before her was a black haired woman. She was quite beautiful, but the scowl on her face made her seem a bit unapproachable. It almost looked like she was trying to keep her from getting to her destination. Perhaps that was a good thing, though. It would save her from having to join this horrid sounding guild.

“Ugh...” Sonya grumbled, placing a hand on her forehead and forcing her eyes shut. The pounding that nagged at her head was obnoxious. She really needed to learn how to control this “power” of hers in a more efficient manor. Opening her eyes slowly, the previously red hues had become a friendlier looking blue once more. Grumbling to herself in frustration, she pulled the cape back over her head, assuring that the strange woman could no longer see her as clearly. “I’m terribly sorry. I didn’t mean to almost crash into you. But I am going to have to ask you to move out of my way. I have business with the people atop this mountain.” The young woman drawled in her foreign accent, not in the mood for chatter at this moment.

Noticing that his person seemed to be in distress, Samson clawed at the lock to his cage, opening it easily like the little escape artist that he was. Squawking menacingly, the large black parrot flew to Sonya’s shoulder, craning his neck towards the woman and her dark colored feline. A hissing noise left his beak as he lurched forward towards the aforementioned creature. “Now now, Samson. There’s no need to act that way. These two were just going to show us to the guild we seek.” Sonya cooed, patting the parrot lightly on the head. Squeaking joyfully, Samson retreated, instead deciding to snuggle against his human companion’s neck. “Don’t mind him. He is a very gentle creature, just a bit protective sometimes. And, well, he’s not a huge fan of... cats...” A look of distaste was flashed quickly towards the furry creature. Sonya didn’t really like cats either. They always seemed to find a way to torment her little bird babies. “Now then... I would really appreciate it if you would escort us to the home of Basilisk Fang.”

"What did your eyes just do?"

A face that ignored all the stranger's former words suddenly blocked the cloaked woman's vision, his currently lavender eyes eagerly examining hers. Matching hair swooped elegantly into his face, which was really much too close to hers for comfort, assuming she had any physical boundaries. They had been normal and blueish and then suddenly were all black and red. That was definitely enough to captivate him, and put her on the short list of people to reap eyeballs from. Were they linked to her magic? He simply adored eyes from mages, though even some eyes of normies had unlocked potential. The mystery of it all piqued his gambling spirit. Iris was one of those people who could exhaust all his funds in a surprise gachapon, so finding out the secrets held in eyes was a never ending obsession.

Iris had been traveling along down the mountain behind Aeluri, dressed nicely for the town. A snappy black blazer over a red shirt, some black slacks, a pair of shiny shoes, and a fluttery purple scarf were today's choices of clothing. He wasn't necessarily with the petite young woman who owned the eyes he longed to claim, but they were both traveling the same way. Due to the annoying trek up and down the mountain, Iris hadn't left the guild hall much. But maybe if he was with someone, should someone trip, get caught in a blizzard, run into a rockslide, get lost, and otherwise get into a deadly situation, there would possibly be someone there to help. Aeluri wasn't his first choice in that aspect, since she seemed pretty aloof, but still. False comfort was better than no comfort, right?

But then he noticed the birds. His mouth pursed into a line. Him and birds had a...complicated relationship. Especially crows. He admired the rage of vision feathered friends possessed. That 360 degree, long range, hyper focused eyesight made his mouth nearly water, but some birds fought him for eyes, even trying to take them for themselves and eat them. What a waste! So he was appreciative, envious, and wary of birds...especially those that would keep her eyes from him. Like Samson.

Blue eyes changing to red and black. A surge of magical power in the air. These things did not faze Aeluri, though they did make her raise an eyebrow in curiosity. The woman before her obviously had something unique about her besides a large collection of birds, though it wasn’t clear exactly what. She had mentioned business with the mountain-dwelling mages, and if she was seeking to join the guild perhaps she would fit right in.

The loud hissing of the giant black bird perched on the lady’s shoulder startled both Aeluri and Umbra. The poor black cat scrambled over his friend’s shoulder and hid in her bag, peeking his head back up to watch the girl and bird, eyes as wide as moons. His fur was puffed out to maximum size as fear coursed through him. Aeluri, however, maintained her composure. The girl was apologizing for her pet’s behavior, but the look she gave Aeluri’s companion did not go unnoticed. Excuse me? Umbra yowled incredulously from his hiding place. “Do I look like some sort of house cat with no self control? How dare you accuse me? I could take on your stupid birds any day lady!” Such a hot temper paired with his fearful appearance was an nonthreatening sight, however. Aeluri rolled her eyes and booped the cat’s nose to distract him from his outrage.

“Now, you mentioned going to the home of Basilisk Fang...” she started, preparing to grill the young woman with questions, but was interrupted by a tall figure blocking her view. It was Iris, one of her newer guildmates, sticking his pale face uncomfortably close to the stranger. His apparent fascination with eyes unnerved Aeluri, considering it meant elongated eye contact. She hated being stared at and she suspected that the cloaked woman with the birds would too.

“Excuse me, eye boy, we were in the middle of a conversation,” she grumbled, stepping around the lanky mage so she could see the newcomer once again. Connecting Iris’ arrival to their current location, she gave him an amused glance. “You didn’t have to follow me all the way here, you know. If you wanted company all you had to do was ask, I don’t always bite.”

Looking back to the girl with blue hair, she continued. “As I was saying, if you want to join the guild, we can take you there.” Muttering about missing out on cinnamon pastries, she turned to head back up the mountain path. Umbra peeked once more over the brim of the bag, eyeing the two others and the birds nervously.

“Come on then! We’ve got some climbing to do.”
