Several caracess varying from snow vulcans to frost wolves littered the the snowy ridge which Famine stood at the edge, casting an otherwise porcelain white landscape with dark red stains. The snow was falling heavy this evening, already attempting to bury the bodies; even dusting the tops of her shoulders and her black hood with the flakes she no longer bothered to brush away
Her hands were still dirty, red at the fingertips where she’d torn the beasts apart...But It wasn’t her twisted morality or the bloodlust that had brought her here, nor was she out here for the sake of the guild, a mission, duties; none of that seemed to matter an ounce anyways, not to her anymore at least. The beasts around her had just gotten in the way. She was here to wait...
And as the time passed around her, as she waited, the moon came over the horizon and cast her in the dark. Even in the in below freezing temperatures she still waited. The same thoughts would cross her mind again: What mattered? What did she love? What lit her fire? Nothing came to mind. Nothing mattered.
Everytime she built up the pretty little kingdom inside her head something brought it crashing down. She was trembling now---and not because the cold, albeit shivering, but because, she was furious!
...She couldn't lead her guild. Couldn’t be a worthy role model for her son anymore! This dumb girl couldn’t even keep Basilisks Fang’s associates loyal. Famine didn’t intimidate anyone anymore. Her name was nothing, she’d given up everything for nothing.
Famine knelt down into the snow. It was when she lowered herself to the ground that she caught herself staring into an icicle. Abruptly, she balled her hand into a fist and swatted the frost off the ridge as soon as she caught a glimpse of herself in the reflective surface.
Looking at herself was painful. She was tired of waiting, she wasn't here to self-reflect, she was here to see things be over and done with.
“Come out already!--” She’d been standing out here for at least two days. And it was driving her to further lunacy.
A few days prior she’d received a vision which haunted her. The vision was going to take place at this very spot. She would come into contact with Lance Knighthunter, A good friend whom she had done wrongly towards years ago when she first put herself on this malevolent carousel… when she ran away when she attacked everyone who came after her, killed anyone who got to close or get rid of those she feared may abandon her. --But, never kill Lance... Maybe she could have if the fire was still there? If vengeance excited her, but it didn't
“I’ve seen this coming for weeks, I’m tired of waiting…” She growled but only the whistling of the winds responded, dusting her cheeks with powdered snow shifting around them on the landscape.

He glanced out from behind the tree for a second to gaze upon her, his golden eyes flickering at the sight of her. He returned to hiding before closing his eyes and taking a deep breathe "Lex. Give me strength for I know that I am weak. I can't deal with her on my own..." he muttered underneath his breath, placing his hand on the symbol which seemed to glow red at the touch.
Months and months of training had led him to this day but it had been all for nothing. He withstood tests and needles, injections and beatings. His magic stripped away from him and forced to sell his soul to a demon just so he could fight again. His body was regenerated though thanks to his uncles lackeys. This was the time to do it, there was no time left. He had to stop her and he was willing to do anything it took. He loved her. She was more than his friend, more than his partner... but these were different times. He still had feelings for her but they fueled his anger to stop her.
A cold rush of wind blew through his hair as he heard her call. His eyes widened a bit as he realized that she had spotted him. He slipped his hands in the pockets of his black coat and appeared from behind the tree. He took a few seconds to stare at her back before approaching "Who would've thought that the wicked witch could sense me? Still taking on the foul appearance I see." he shook his head, usually he would laugh at his sarcasm but he was in no mood. He stopped dead in his tracks and held out his hand in front of him "I come to you as a friend. No worries. I want to offer you one last time to come with me." he simply stated, his face slowly getting sadder "But if you don't I can't promise that you will make it out of here..." he stared at her with a mournful determination.

“I’m not an idiot---..... I know things will never… be like they were before.” Famine’s words were cold as the frost that blew from her lips. She turned away his hand; she knew the damage couldn’t be fixed. This wasn’t something that could be shaken off-- forgotten. They’d both messed up. They were literally poison to each other now.
--but that didn’t mean she wanted to be by him any less. This was why she’d been dreading his approach since her first vision. Dreading the inevitable battle her powers had allowed her to foresee.
Each person opposing each other in this situation was the definition of a past they both loved and hated simultaneously. This was who they both were now.
“It’s been a very long time… I ran the biggest dark guild in Fiore, I adopted a son,”
Before that-- She had loved diving away all the bad guys with Lance, being the victor; a hero. But she didn’t like being defeated, made a fool out of and Lance had put her in that jeopardy… For what? Her lip quivered and her ears became a little red under her hair.
“I realized something when I left Joya, after you left me there; ...cut up, and naked.” She bellowed, with a harsh growl, and her eyebrows scrunched in disgust when describing the event. Famine turned around a few degrees as the wind whistled. Folded in her hands was a particularly eerie book with pages inscribed with madness. Madness she’d been urged studied thoroughly throughout the years.
Any mage who didn’t live under a rock was familiar with the Tome of Famine.
“I found something after you left me there, It was a long walk back to Fiore. Thankfully I had someone to talk to me...hahaha...” She clutched the tome in her hand, thumb rubbing the engraving of the book's spine “I had a revelation-- It gave me another name, a purpose." She rattled, revealing more information that Lance may not have known: that there was an influence...and that influence was slowly falling apart as her buried emotions surfaced--
“But-- I’ve failed a guild, I failed a son--!” She failed him, and Heero, Simon, Chikane, Ebony: everyone was gone. She had nothing to show for those good times, just the scars that ruined it all.
"Is that why you've come!?..." she sniffled "to tell me I've failed?-... " She asked, black particles were beginning to float about her and a dark aura was growing.

He pointed to that book "That book is the reason you are like this and you have no one else to blame for it but yourself. You really are a disgrace to Rita's name Famine." he shook his head "I got my hands on that book back when we met each other back in Rose Garden. I was nice and spared it... I was blind... I should of destroyed it before." his voice was deep and ominous at this point. He shook his head. The memories that the two had had with each other, the jobs, the time they first met in Rose garden. Everything was coming back to him now. This wasn't how things were meant to be. "I'm not Despair. I'm not blind anymore Rita."
He didn't want things to end like this "I want to help you. but if you think there is no helping you then so be it." He took a step forward "This isn't who you are. You aren't someone that should exist!" He threw his hand to the side, ready for a fight if she was going to give him one.

The mage clutched the tome against her chest and turned her head, prompting a few of the snowflakes on top of her hair to flutter down. Her breath was visible condensing in front of her cut lips which she would often sink her teeth into. “You're the biggest hypocrite I’ve seen!...-” She could feel the back of her eyes stinging with what could have been tears “Monsters don’t just go away; your hands are bloodied. I’ve seen what you can do.” she barked between gritted teeth, looking him over with glowering eyes. “You are just as awful if not worse and you have the nerve to come to preach about my existence!?...”
They shouldn’t exist. Either of them, she had seen timelines where things were different…. But this was the course that had been taken.
“Yes, Maybe we shouldn’t be here, everything shouldn’t have happened to us. Things would be different if we had just went back to Fairy Tail together in the first place, but that’s not how it happened!-” She contested. Famine was a person who would rather live with her mistakes every moment than forget a single thing for an instant.
“I know exactly who I am, your the one that's oblivious.” As she spoke again, That aura around her began to intensify. If there were any life around her on this barren mountainside, she was certain it would wither just by being in her range and die. Lance might even feel himself becoming uneasy if he approached, dizzy, sickly even... -Famine made sure of this so he would keep his distance. She had seen the vision, she’d seen them fighting, she didn’t want that to unravel but that fate may have already been written
“Do you understand--? I can’t fix me, I can’t undo what I’ve built nor change what I’ve destroyed.”

"Remember when we met after everything happened. In Rose Garden I think it was? I pledged myself to you, offered my loyalty and love but you left me there." he clenched his fist "To be honest my hatred for you has burned stronger every day since then." This part was true. He had no family and friends. All of them were dead, most of them by his own hands. "You were all I had left in this god forsaken world... and you left me." he started to chuckle at this point as his face twisted into a wicked grin.
He then placed his finger on his chin and clicked his tongue "Where, oh where has my daughter gone Famine? Jade. Yes that was her name?" This part was also true. He had sent his daughter to Basilisk Fang in order for Famine to take care of her because he believed she would do better than he would. He snapped his finger "Oh that's right! She was killed by a Knight that was looking to kill evil. You failed to protect her Famine and she trusted you with her life." his wicked smile grew a little bit. "What about that son of yours... he's not really your son now is he? You kidnapped him from his own family and now I bet even he doesn't like you all that much."
His yellow eyes gleamed with excitement at his own despair. He had been getting information about Famine and Basilisk Fang for about a year or so now and it was time to use everything against her.
He laughed "remember how this all started, you called me weak and pathetic back in Joya." he extended his arms out at his side "Look who's weak and pathetic now Famine!" he had a more crazed look in his eye. His game was all about playing mind tricks because he knew that if he wanted to beat her in a fight he would have to make her mad enough to attack. "You failed me, You failed Fairy Tail, You failed Jade, and you failed your son."

Lance Had a lot to say to her, and to Famine, half of it went in one ear and out the other. Simply an emotional banter… but some points did stick and she would address them… The encounter was uncomfortable and Famine struggled to stay closed mouth. Maybe the air was blowing the snow harder but she felt colder in the face than before. It couldn’t be the nervousness and ---it couldn't be that he was right… could it?
Famine already blamed herself for plenty of things, and the past few months had been the most somber of her moments. She killed, yes, but Jade’s blood was not among the stains already on her hands. --Famine didn’t take kindly to this blame. If she thought Jade was worth killing she would have done it herself...and If she thought she was worth protecting she would have tried better to protect her.. Truth be told… Famine felt indifferent about the teen. She didn’t love her even if they had called her mother... There were few things she loved.
“Jade was ill minded: must have gotten it from her father. What did you really expect sending her up Mt. Hakobe? She turned up dead on her own accord.”
A hand fell away from the book she held to her chest and balled into a fist at her side. She glanced back over her shoulder, blue eyes narrowing to give Lance a jaded stare. The witches’ reserve was turning to agitation now.
“If you want me to be honest, you are weak, you are pathetic, Lance.” She growled between her teeth with venom practically dripping from her voice. She’d tried her damndest… and to be called a failure?--- She did try, she did conquer at one point… but Lance also had a point. She failed and she hated it….more than anything. Her breathing felt ragged now, and emotional turmoil rolled through her mind.
“...To think I ever felt–” She quivered and the air began to feel heavier
“You.”
If this journey of hers had a lesson, anything at all, it was this: Passion grows jagged, and people always destroyed what they loved.
“I h-hate you Lance Knighthunter and what you represent, Why are you haunting me. It's over!” She yanked down the collar of her coat past her neck to show him the pale skin scarred from where she’d had Elijah, the 3rd heir of Basilisk Fang, burn the Fairy Tail mark from her skin.
“Now, Why are you here!? To end it?!” She knew this time he was not here to simply taunt her. This time it was personal.

“Famine. I don’t think you understand… You hurt and killed many people. For what? Because you were pissed off?” he sounded sincerer this time. He did not understand her motivations behind her crimes. He shook his head “I have come to end it. This is the only thing that’s left for me to make right.” He stared the snake down for a second. “That mark that once belonged to Fairy Tail, I have it too.” He showed her the symbol on his hand “This is what is left of that guild mark.” He muttered. He could not keep dancing around with the viper for very long as she was bound to attack sooner rather than later. He could sense the tension brewing in the air before he heard a glimmer of hope.
He heard the small flutter of wings behind him and as he turned around a spied his new companion, Ambit, coming closer to him. “Lance, it’s done!” he said before spying Famine and hiding behind a bush, scared. Lance nodded and turned back towards Famine with a toothy grin “Check Mate.” He said, taking a knife out of his pocket and stabbing the demonic, red symbol that sat on his hand. The symbol would start glowing, a red seal appearing under Famine. If she would take notice of the seal, she could very well move out of the way but if she didn’t, she would start to hallucinate and cause distortions around her.
He would then place his hands at his side, clenched fists. “Forbidden Seal: Cursed Claws” he said, taking a deep breath. The Symbol on his hand would glow bright red, a seal appearing on his hand before disappearing. Claws would pop out of the mage’s hands, glowing with a black and red aura around them. Little drops of poison would drip off them. He would launch at her and take two swipes at her. Before launching backwards, away from her, not checking to see if his swipes hit.
The mage would take a moment to stare at Famine before opening his mouth “By the way, I never apologized for leaving you there.” He shook his head “That wasn’t right of me and I bear responsibility for cursing you to become this.” He stared at her, his determination unwavering in his eyes. “That’s why I must end this here.”

Checkmate
Azure irises flashed crimson before returning to their normal hue and Famine heard the faint snapping of a chain echo in her mind. She moved a hand to hold her eye. She…Could no longer see what her future held, and no longer predict her opponent's next move.
“Lance…?” She started quietly, confused, shoulders quivering “What did you do?” she growled with hands clutching at her face. Looking between her fingers she saw the snow beneath her glowing red. She did try to use her teleport to evade the magic circle but it was as if her magic, arc of time, had been destroyed completely.
“That– means…” She gripped her hair and scrunched her eyes painfully as certain memories and elements of her personality tried to sort them self out now that something else was in her head where Arc of time was not. Soul. She felt several emotions she had not genuinely felt in years; notable guilt
Famine looked up now, her left eye was severely dilated, black to the edges of her blue iris, and the right one otherwise normal. Eris wasn’t the only mistake she’d made… Eris was just the soul It started with the book.
"You know I don't want to kill you right?" The air was getting heavy because of the red ring under her. She was dizzy, but she could hold her ground against him- “Shadow Make: Spikes.” Large black needles erupted from the ground in front of her. Forming a barrier Lance would have to get through in order to even harm her.
She looked around frantically at the black wall of spikes protruding. She was lucky he hadn’t impaled himself on this spell trying to attack her. “I remember… before I used this magic to kill people… Heero would always have me use maker magic to create stupid things he needed… Usually, they were tankards for the bar,” She said with a weak chuckle. She lowered her hand and dropped the wall of spikes, watching them seep back into the ground and back into her shadow as she looked across to Lance, brandishing his claws.
She could still make things… that didn’t kill people, right?
She cupped her hands at her chest, using the black mass of shadow make magic to create a rose. Her dilated eye fell on the flower in her hand. “But…That was before I was betrayed– before he threw me in prison.” The rose grew a few thorns that stabbed into her hand where she held it. Tears stung the back of her eyes “All of them turned their fucking backs on me after I came back with that damn book. Until I met Eris!— What did you do…? Her and I signed an oath…!”
The ground she stood felt like it was tilting; Her balance was fragile. It was like she was standing on a raft in the middle of the ocean. “It’s really too late for any of us to apologize. How long has it been now.” She held her head, blinking. “How many years?” She looked at the ground where snow started to gather on top of the book, dilated eye reverberating as she dropped the black flower, steeping towards the The Tome of Famine on the ground.
“This. This here is all I have left, I found it in a place like this. It was so cold.” She reached down for her tome.
