    Determination.

That’s what drove the two beings, so tiny against the mountainside, so small against the sky. Determination drove them to traverse the treacherous, rugged side of Mount Hakobe in the swirling winds of a blizzard. Their determination to reach the looming fortress of the notorious dark guild Basilisk Fang made each step into the deep snow a little easier.

Aeluri glanced down at her side once again to check that her black feline companion was still fording the snowdrifts without struggle. Their journey that started at the base of Mt. Hakobe in sunlight and high spirits seemed to have taken a difficult turn. The snowstorm had seemingly come out of nowhere and dark, rolling clouds swiftly succumbed the peak with darkness and snow. A lonely, somber feeling seemed to roll off the mountain. Perhaps it was a fitting place for such a guild as Basilisk Fang to reside.

Umbra leapt over another tall drift as the two continued on. Aeluri could see that he was becoming fatigued due to the tremble in his step. Frozen whiskers drooped from his face and clumps of snow caked the fur on his long black legs, making each step more tedious than it should have been. Aeluri was not in any better condition, though. Wind whipped through her long black locks, seeming to want to tug her away from the path and her destination. A fluffy parka covered rosy cheeks as a two eyes, one red and one gold, peered from within. The clothing and gear purchased from a nearby village had kept her alive up until this point. The cinnamon whiskey she had sipped before their departure kept the wizard warm as well.

Dim lights created a golden glow across the bar as Aeluri sat on a high stool, sipping her favorite alcohol. The bar was reminiscent of the rest of the village, lightly populated. Two men sat farther down the bar counter from her, whispering intensely about a matter that seemed very important. Aeluri wasn’t highly interested in their conversation, but listened in anyways. “Have you heard the latest news?” one said with a sparkle in his eye. “Basilisk Fang is on the rise again. I heard there’s been lots of activity from them lately.”

“Really? Are they still attacking the Magic Council?” asked the other. Aeluri sat up, a new interest gleaming in her eyes. She was never a supporter of the Magic Council, but hadn't found a way to directly oppose them alone without arrest or death. “Of course, that’s what the guild’s always done,” the other replied with a scoff.

“Excuse me,” Aeluri interrupted smoothly. Both men turned to look at her with suspicious eyes. “Where might I find this guild?”

Aeluri remembered the encounter briefly as she looked ahead into the white of the storm. The men hadn’t actually known where the guild was and said that nobody but the guild members and allies knew, but instinct pointed her towards the nearby Mt. Hakobe. Hopefully this freezing journey wasn’t for naught and the guild would be before them instead of a frosty death.

“Look!” cried Umbra. Ahead of the two loomed an enormous door set into the side of stone walls so tall that they disappeared into the snowy sky. The two friends glanced at each other relief and excitement, then bolted as fast as they could through the deep snow. When they reached the entrance, Aeluri tugged her dense glove off, hand instantly smarting from the temperature change. The sound of her swift knock could be heard echoing inside.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET THE MONSTER BEHIND THE MASK?
Aoi grumbled as the blue-haired boy beside her tugged grumpily on his side of the blanket. To their utter dismay, that horrendous old sheep they’d slain with that disgustingly energetic kid had provided fleece enough for only two blankets – meaning that naturally, the twins had to share. Being the only blanket they’d discovered that could completely insulate them from the cold that constantly surrounded this damned guild hall, it became another constant of their life. Every time they were due for a stop at Mt. Hakobe, the blanket would be donned, the twins squishing in under its cover in ridiculously uncomfortable positions. Then, they’d awkwardly shuffle up the snowy slopes, listening to Akano quietly judging them inside their heads. Honestly though – the spirit had never experienced any cold before, living inside her own world of threads and connections. Who was she to judge?

In response to her brother’s disruption, the idol shoved aside the heavy covering with a frustrated sigh, instantly feeling the drop in temperature after leaving the warmth of the miniature cave they’d created. “Suit yourself.” The teasing remark from Aoba nearly sent her storming back over, but the girl contained her rage and instead moved towards the entrance of the guild hall. Did they keep any extra jackets around here, perhaps? They hadn’t spent much time around the hall in general, so the idols knew little about what they had access to. Perhaps one day, if they got an actually reasonably long vacation they could come and explore, but until then…

A sudden knocking sounded at the fortress gates, and Aoi blinked in surprise. This was rare – people weren’t often seen around the guild besides the guild master (she will actually never get over the whole age leap thing like wtf ahote), and her mind sifted through possibilities of who it could be. A quick shrug of nonchalance demonstrated her lack of care for their identity, and the heavy door would be pulled open.

…never mind, that was a fucking terrible idea.

Instantly, a gust of cold wind blew in, sending Aoi into a fit of shivers as she noted the presence of a black-haired girl with…a cat? “Hurry up please, I’m dying of cold over here.” Too frustrated to put on a cheery front, the idol would instantly slam the door shut behind the newcomer, trying to maintain her dignity as she stalked back to the warmth of Aoba and he blanket.

“So…what are you here for, besides letting in all the cold?”

Snowflakes seemed to slither like snakes across the cold stone floor as a large gust of wind accompanied Aeluri and Umbra through the door. Both dark-haired beings felt silent relief as the howling rage of the blizzard was closed off behind them with a slam. Their frozen journey had finally brought them to a dimly lit hallway. A thin layer of dust covered the stone pillars and statues that stood tall along the path before them. Aeluri stomped the snow from her boots and noticed a long, intricately designed rug that covered most of the floor as she looked down. After cautiously looking around to make sure he wasn’t in any immediate danger, Umbra sat close to his friend's feet and began the task of removing thick clumps of ice and snow from his black fur.

The girl who had let them through the large door passed in a hurry on their left side. Red and gold eyes followed the stranger as she rushed back to where a boy was huddled under a soft-looking blanket. Aeluri tilted her head in curiosity as she observed the twins huddled together for warmth. Their matching hair and eyes were strikingly blue, a pleasant aesthetic.

“So…what are you here for, besides letting in all the cold?”

Aeluri raised a brow. “I believe you were the one who opened the door and let the weather in,” she drawled casually as her frozen fingers worked to remove icicles from her hair. “But I digress. I’m here to inquire about this guild and its purpose. My interests regarding the Magic Council are potentially similar to Basilisk Fang’s.” The prompt statement was accompanied by a neutral expression. If any sign of wavering or weakness was shown, the black-haired girl and her feline companion could be in danger.

They were in a snake’s den after all.

I WASTED MY TIME 'TIL TIME WASTED ME

    ??? words @basilisk noobs

    He was growing weaker.

Though it hardly seemed so in the scarce desire to exit his room, the lack of light was known to be true. Slowly but surely it consumed the inability to be subject to natural disasters. A trouble that brought him discomfort in what time had passed by upon this jagged layer of slopes. Icy torrents that did nothing but remind the curious that they were not wanted in the persistent gale. Briefly however, the somber skies would part into the clarity of evening. Allowing them the remembrance of what truly lay behind the storm, if only it were just a sliver in their fickle lives.

Theo– startled by the vehement slam of the door jolted from his slumber. It did not take him long to recollect what had brought him here, though the majority was resolved over the boisterous noise that resounded from below. Had Ahote been making a mess again?– was his first thought, but then came the unlikely idea of unfamiliar company. The usually empty hall had made itself the epitome of what could've been lonesome. Not that he'd ever minded it, no matter how eerie it was.

Making an effort to slip from the warmth of the bed, the light of the fire doing well in the corner to keep him sustained. Irritably he pushed the door open, deluged by the gloom of the hall and the chill that lingered in wait. From a slightly better perspective, the vague call of voices indeed came from downstairs. A furrow had roused into his rough features. Rather than to step the opposite direction, it seemed a cunning move to go and directly confront what may have wandered in. With purpose or led astray, Theo was hardly concerned with what could've been an intruder. Thankfully for him it had been the exact opposite.

"Whose there?" a sharp query, prominent once he'd been visible in the cavity of a stairway. The hostile pair of golden wandered from the children to the young girl, not finding a single presence to be something that was mundane in his memory. Either way the vigilance was far from present. "Is there something you need?" deciding to direct the heed towards the girl which stood from those that desperately sought warmth, he'd taken a few steps closer. Glaring brilliance deliberately became more tolerant in the eventual clarity of a black cat. Fleeting was the reveal of surprise, the inside stirring in excitement over the mere existence of this adorable companion.

Tension rippled through her muscles as Aeluri heard the sharp words of the man who stood before her. A golden glare seemed to pierce her skin as if seeing into her soul, and she worried her determined front was for naught. An escape plan began to form in her mind in case things turned for the worse. Just as the mage opened her mouth to let out a fiery retort, an expression of surprise and excitement was caught briefly on the man’s face. She followed his gaze to her arms, where Umbra was curled up as his fur dried after shedding off snow clumps. The black cat had been watching the exchange and looked between the two, confused. Steeling herself once more, the black-haired girl let a slight smile cross her face. Soft steps echoed around the hall, amplified by the empty space. Aeluri passed the blue twins huddled under their blanket and stopped in front of the man, red and gold eyes meeting pure golden ones. Umbra, suddenly moved from his comfortable position, found himself held up under his arms at eye level with the strange Basilisk Fang member. A tiny squeak of surprise left his fanged mouth. The feline’s fur puffed out in fright, though he sensed no malice from the other.

“Do you want to hold him?” Not giving a chance for response, Aeluri took another step and placed her companion into unfamiliar arms. She was taking a risk and she knew it, but kept a neutral face anyways. Her companion shot a glowering look, but accepted his fate. Black fur settled back into place as Umbra relaxed, rumbling purrs bursting forth from his chest. It bounced off the walls, an unfamiliar sound of happiness filling such a somber chamber.

“And to answer the question I’ve been asked twice now,” Aeluri continued hotly, getting a little annoyed. “I want to join Basilisk Fang. The Magic Council is like a thorn in the side of Fiore’s people and wizards, and I believe joining this guild will give me opportunities to take action against them. A fued fought alone is futile, but attacking with strategy and support that a guild can provide means success.”

I WASTED MY TIME 'TIL TIME WASTED ME

    ??? words @aeluri
    those purrs killed me
The girl before him appeared nearly galled by his presence, the crimson that struck her golden pair radiating with some sort of hidden resolve. A new light shuddered the expression that he'd been carefully attending the majority of his attention towards. With the scarce lacking of patience that struggled to seal his lips together, the larger form stood tall, allowing her to step closer and closer from what he had originally suspected to be the more comfortable distance. Instead it was hardly so in regards to conversation. Startled– Theo jerked as the feline had been abruptly forced upward and eventually into his arms. Not wishing to dismiss the warmth, he held onto it with as much delicacy as he had, allowing an able hand to gently stroke the harmless companion on the peak of its feeble head. Silently for awhile, the charm of the cat had grasped the majority of his attention, not allowing the heed prior to this giving to be directed elsewhere.

Frustration had roused up, clear in the tone of the girl that stood before him. Just enough so it made him wonder if it could've been something of offense- the idea made him glower- hardly enough that it was prominent. What was resounding in purrs had eased the usual hot temper, the forthright downside not so much. "Yes, yes, just like the rest of you," he'd started with a disinterested expression, "I don't need to hear a story, everyone comes here for the same reason." a momentary glance was directed at the twins, then into the shadowy extra that made him ponder whether or not his friend was even around to allow another into this venomous affiliation. By how comfortable the younger ones had made themselves near the flickering heat, it was surely certain that they'd already been granted access. Maybe this fortress was just to big for him to even notice.

"Our master isn't present... at the moment." surely he were somewhere in this massive winding structure. Theo was hardly bothered by the close intent that he'd been willing to waste his time and search. "Surely your will to join can allow you to wait until he decides to appear," beginning to move off and towards the nearest round table, the companion of the girl was still kept close. "Unless you'd like to go back outside." that alone was incredibly doubtful. It was always a nuisance to get out of here then come back- which often prevented the majority from scarcely withdrawing from these halls, past the cool stone and into the blinding white. Travelers that came seeking refugee often disappeared in this place- and definitely not by his own hands. They became meals of thrill and the appetite for bloodshed.

Once taking the wary descent into the nearby wooden chair, the slender fingers winded through the raven fur, allowing the softness to indulge his once cold hands. "So... your name?" simply observing the cat, the query had been directed at the girl. It only seemed right to make an effort in conversing when the others had already disregarded their attempts. Not that Theo minded leaving- something else was steadying that notion. "Or do you usually not bother to introduce yourself?" there was a drawl in his tone, a colorless flavor that lacked any sort of emotion. For the most part he was coming off as incredibly coarse individual.

Many men of the working kind often got so caught up in their trifles that they had nearly forgotten to complete tasks they had committed to prior, and Ahote was no exception. Any being who housed themselves within the Basilisk Fang fortress would be all too familiar with the sound of loafers tapping against the stone flooring and the thick smell of wax candles melting. The raven-haired master's bed was no more than space to mindlessly toss his textbooks and papers onto. If there were an instance where the man had found himself too weary to work, he'd fall asleep in the last place he had been conscious. He was the pinnacle of the ideal workaholic and had yet to be scolded for it.

However, although the man had been whisked away into a peaceful slumber just the night before, he had awoken with each hair on his body standing in a quiet panic. The sky was a bright grey color and the candles had flickered into nothing but wicks the color of coal, and the man was quick to understand what lingering thought had passed him. Hastily, Ahote marched down the candlelit corridors with both hands occupied with buttoning up his white collared shirt and a small papyrus scroll tucked between both his metal and fleshed arm, hidden under the thin layer of cotton of his fabrics. His eyes had drooped with a weariness of a man who hadn't slept in days, eyelids dark and worn, his complexion his normal pale tint.

The raven-haired man had arrived in the tavern, where the fortress entrance had converged with the hearty space, decorated with chairs and tables, littered with empty chalices and silverware. Ahote often found himself wondering whether to replace these outdated objects every time he laid eyes on it. But, this time, it was not the old-fashioned tavern that caught his attention, but the brooding Theo who sat in one of those chairs with a black fuzzy figure on his thighs and the mischievous Itou twins. Ahote huffed restlessly, "Theo, come with me into town. We have business to attend to. . ." he began, only for his restless voice to fade into silent breaths as his gaze shifted to the black-haired girl who stood just before the group of Basilisk Fang mages. His lips would quirk into a small frown, "And you are. . .?"

“My name is Aeluri Atra,” she asserted, tone politely smooth. “And I’m Umbra!” the black cat piped up from his comfortable seat. Aeluri shot her companion a warning glance, but quickly turned her attention to the dark-haired man who had recently arrived through the doorway nearby. The tall frame of who she assumed was the Basilisk Fang guildmaster towered over her, but her confidence didn’t allow for intimidation. He looks like he could use a week-long nap, she mused in her head as she noticed the dark rings around his eyes. A shape protruding against the man’s shirt caught her eye. The item was indistinguishable, but the possibility of a weapon could not risk being ruled out.

“If I may ask, what business must you two attend to?" she asked casually, cautioning herself not to pry too much. “I’m willing to lend my assistance if it’s needed.” Aeluri hoped to move the conversation along quickly so that she could retrieve the black feline from the lap on which he currently resided.

I WASTED MY TIME 'TIL TIME WASTED ME

    ??? words @aeluri @Ahote
    toll or smol
The shuffling of movement recalled against the cool floors, golden peering through the wave of disorderly strands. As soon as the voice parted from the depleted breath, it faded upon realization of unfamiliar company. Fortunate enough for him that Ahote had appeared so suddenly, yet all at once he dreaded withdrawing from the warmth and into the storm outside. "Is it really that urgent?" he'd drawl with the emphasize quite clear of disinterest. If anything he would have preferred to stay exactly where he was, the warmth of this soft feline forever present on his lap. Though it wasn't as if that wish could be controlled. It was not his companion after all, but the girl just a few feet to the front. Aeluri was her name, the one beneath the gentle caress called Umbra. Strange and unlikely callings that he couldn't truly say he would have heard persistently in this time.

"--Why do you look so terrible?" deciding upon the upfront approach in regards to how frazzled the man looked, he started to ponder if this was why the gloomy nature was so present in contrast to the rise and fall of his childish nature. Certainly Ahote was aware of these destructive habits? Not that it was particularly respecting of his own company. There was only so much he could do as a "bodyguard", casually did the frame move upwards and from the chair.

The feline was handed back to Aeluri, not a single mutter of thanks in the process. However he had felt rather content with being able to hold the soft creature so abruptly, her sharp note of his hidden urge somewhat inconvenient. Though not a word had been brought to expose him of this obscured nature for how adorable cats were. "Yes, Master, just what is this business?" following suit with the query of the other, alongside the remark for the position at which his friend stood there was still the subtle flicker of irritation in his voice. Mostly for the fear of it being anything absurd. Theo loathed embarrassing himself just on the command of another, especially when it contributed to failure. "Since Aeluri is so interested in joining this infamous guild of yours... she can suffer with your antics for today." figuring it was a chance at departure from this scenario, the sullen man gradually turned off in an attempt to leave.

Ahote looked to Theo with a worn, irritable expression. Although his countenance had twisted into something closer to a frown than a smile, the raven-haired man had found it difficult to even muster up strength to scold his tawny friend for his disinterest. Instead, he grumbled quietly and began to assemble his outdoorwear, tossing his black boots in front of him and shuffling to slip his arms into his coat which hung somewhere in the darkness.

Ahote leaned over the stone flooring to slip his pale feet in his winter boots, which seemed to be the only appropriate footwear for Mt. Hakobe's everlasting winterlike conditions. It was a troublesome lifestyle that the pickiest of settlers learned to adapt to. With his topaz orbs fixated on dressing himself, Ahote spoke sluggishly, "Aeluri? Very well, you may call me Ahote. I am the Master of this pla. . ." abruptly, he raised his head towards the upbeat sound of the tar-black feline speak, his complexion even paler than before, ". . . this place." he finished awkwardly. He had almost doubted that the cat that Theo had taken such a liking to had spoken, nearly blaming it on his weariness. But, with human beings waltzing about spewing fireballs as if it were natural, a talking cat was not farfetched.

Ahote had finished strapping his feet into his boots and submerging his torso in the warmth of his fur coat, raising to his greatest height and began to pinch the ends of his hairs sympathetically, "I haven't slept a wink is all. Nights become a blur until you just. . ." he shook his right hand vigorously as his words trailed off into a sigh, gesturing an experience that not even he could explain soberly. "Anyway, that's a grand idea, Theo. We're heading into town for a bounty, of sorts. And yes," he turned to Aeluri with a struggling smile, "this is a perfect moment for you to join us, Aeluri. Now, everyone, get your coats."
