Magic Name: Cards of the Uncrowned Saint
Magic Type: Lost (Prevalent) / Holder (Auxiliary)
Description:
The Cards of the Uncrowned Saint were created hundreds of years ago by an unknown wizard of incredible power. The commonly accepted theory is that their creator either invented card magic or was one of its earliest masters. The story says this wizard, wishing to make magic available to everyone equally, traveled the world finding like-minded mages and requesting a tiny portion of their power. Using this harvested power the wizard created a large number of cards capturing the "essence" of their subject's magic. The sheer power required for such a feat lead to the wizard's posthumous title as the Uncrowned Saint, since most collectors believe the wizard would have been deemed one of the ten Wizard Saints if alive today.
Each card shares the same backing with slight color variations which seem to indicate how many of the card were originally produced; thus far the spectrum of rarity ranges from brown to gold. Brown cards have dozens of known copies, while gold only have one or two of each kind. The front of the cards display an intricate, stylized, portrait of the wizard who donated their power to create the card. Each card represents a spell and acts as a kind of lens through which ethernano may be focused to create the spell's effect. The intricate magic and skill required to produce the card's effects has long since become a lost magic; most card wizards opt to create their own cards, allowing for a great deal more freedom when selecting spells.
The common cards can occasionally be found in rare curio or antique shops, the rarer varieties however, are almost exclusively in the hands of private collectors. Wizards value them for their representation of magical skill, while some normal humans have taken to collecting them for their artistic value.
Strengths:
- Indestructible:
No wizard has ever successfully damaged or destroyed one of the Cards of the Uncrowned Saint. - Repository of Power:
Because the magic's form is shaped by the card, spells may be cast with incredible speed. Spells cast through the cards also have the magical signature of their original wizard instead of the user's.
Weaknesses:
- Lost Art:
The secret of the card's creation is lost to time. Practitioners may therefore only expand their repertoire of spells by finding the original cards. - Rigid:
The card's effects are predetermined. Skilled users may manipulate the power of the spell to a degree but may not change a spell's form. Elvira can, for example, produce a candle flame instead of a fireball but cannot change a fireball to a flame thrower. - Selfish Sorcery:
Cards must be held by the person for which the effect is produced, making it difficult to cast beneficial spells on other people. Elvira can circumvent this disadvantage by having someone hold a card while she channels the spell, however, this takes a significant amount of time to explain and perform.
Unique Abilities:
- Legacy of the Musketeers:
Elvira, as the child of Minstrel nobility, has received extensive fencing instruction. She has honed her skills during her time with Crystal Swan and developed her own style of visceral swordplay.
(+50% Strength) - Sleight of Hand:
Elvira is trained as a performer and croupier with a natural talent for prestidigitation. She is a formidable magician.
(She may freely move cards to and from her hand with a flick of the wrist)
(She is allowed to conceal a single card when disarmed)
(She may remove small items from players unnoticed with their permission) - It's Time to Play the Game:
Elvira is a mathematical genius and brilliant tactician. She is rarely surprised and capable of quickly identifying and exploiting her opponent's weaknesses.
(+50% Spell Damage if she has not been surprised)
(+50% Speed if she has been surprised)
(She is extremely difficult to beat in any competition that is aided by detailed analysis) - The Seven Sights:
Elvira has acquired a set of rare cards which allow her to foretell the future with very high accuracy. Simple questions answered in binary terms produce the best results.
(She may make vague but accurate predictions freely)
(She may make a precise and accurate prediction once every 5 posts)
(Precise predictions revealing information about another player may only be done with permission) - Solitaire:
Elvira has the ability to play Cards of the Uncrowned Saint in rapid succession to increase each card's potency.
(When spells from this magic are cast one after another each card after the first gains cumulative bonuses)
