The Catacombs are to Savage Skull what Tenrou Island is to Fairy Tail, however, they are different entirely. Were Fairy Tail considers Tenrou Island as a sacred place, the Catacombs are something left in mystery to outsiders. The Catacombs are connected by thousands of tunnels which connect to corridors, some leading to rooms, others to dead ends or even designed to get trespassers lost making it a truly exquisite labyrinth; one that has never been mapped even by the members of the guild it belongs to. These passageways stretch for many miles on many levels underneath the guild hall, marshes and some members even saying hell itself.
It's not known if there was ever a true creator for this maze or what the method to their madness was if there had been, as there's no grand architecture to be spoken of. Many rumours say that the catacombs are nothing more than what has been left over from eras past that have been built on as time passes. There is no real way of knowing however as no blueprints for these structures have ever been found, some structures of these have been buildings assumed for residence, fortresses and other unknown buildings; these make the enigmatic spider web now referred to as 'The Catacombs'.
Despite its creation being a mystery, there is another that makes it more intriguing, and that is that it seems to have its own will. In a sense it seems to be almost living, aware of everything going on within its walls and giving birth to the darkness within them. Many who have dared to walk within the unholy corridors the catacombs provide say that it eerily cultivates the darkness itself, melding and twisting it to forms of creatures not yet known to man and forsaken by heaven and hell alike. It is said that of all the beings said to roam these darkened halls only two are known, these are the Lichborne and the Garm. Those who have come across them and survived the trial swear that it was the catacombs protecting its secrets from those undeserving of them.
No-one can say for sure what goes on in the deepest parts of Savage Skull, this includes its own members for the most part as the corridors never seem to come to an end. Every time someone seems to think they have found it, a new turn or twist to another room or corridor seems to appear like the catacombs are constantly moving or altering. The reason for this is unknown, some speculate to protect the guild and its secrets while others believe its for something more sinister, as some reach to realms far beyond that of mortal man.
Though the dangers are known and are plenty ranging from being lost in the corridors, engulfed by the darkness or killed by unknown beings, the guild uses this ungodly place as a sort of rite of passage. When a mage is believed themselves to be capable they are sent into the very bowels of Savage Skull, this is to see if they have not only the strength it will take to survive but the wits to go with it. Those who manage to survive their trial show that they are ready to take the next step within the guild's hierarchy, that is until they want to take another step towards the inner circle and once more must enter the darkness.
