Job~ Find this book

After several days of walking Simon arrived at Peace Village. "Stupid over priced trains. It took me forever to get here! I've got to find a better way to get around." He trudged around town for several minutes before finding the library and heading inside. He looked around the library and found the help desk. He approached the librarian "Excuse me can you help me find a book?" The librarian looked down at him "I would dear, but some rascals rearranged a number of books. What book are you looking for you might be lucky and it could be among the few untrifiled with." "I'm looking for 'A Tale of Twenty Two Cities' do you have that?" The librarian frowned "I'm sorry that book is missing." "So it's been checked out?" "No it's no where to be found. I'm sorry."

Simon let out a grown, a simple job for some pocket money was about to become a painful chore. "I guess I'll try to find it then." He turned to look at the bookshelves "Atleast it isn't a BIG library."

Searching through the books for a while Simon couldn't find it on the first row of shelves. He checked all the spines, every book, every shelf and every row but it wasn't there, or atleast on the first row. He check around on some tables and desks, that were with the row of books. He found some unrelated reference materials, papers and pencils but nothing of use. Even after double checking he found nothing so he was about to proceed to the next row when he had a good idea.

He considered that the librian said that the book was missing and was probably dropped or shoved under something. He got down on his hands and knees on the ground and started crawling around looking under shelves and desks. After a while he couldn't find anything despite his best efforts, but as he exited the row, he tripped over a book. Excited with the possiblity of success, he hastily picked it up and looked at it reading the cover over carefuly.

'Normal Dice' :

Simon read the cover of the book "The World of Alchemist E. Elric" a book documenting the travels of a young achemist and mage, some people say his alchemic research is hidden with the book through a cryptic code. But it's not the book Simon is looking for and he isn't any good with decoding things, so all in all: useless.

Simon found the book's proper place and resumed his search. He was sorting through a pile of scattered books when he heard a voice behind him "Hey string-bean what are you doing here?" Simon turned around, it was a kid about his age, not to mention a lot less scrawny then Simon. Simon looked at him "Oh hi, do you know where the book 'A Tale of Twenty-Two Cities" is?" the kid started laughing "You are really trying to find that stupid old book? I don't really care but I'll tell you this: I hide it behind the books. Good luck, book geek." The kid ran off "What a punk. Well atleast I can save myself the trouble of crawling under tables now."

Simon made slow progress through the library looking behind the books one by one making sure he didn't miss anything, trying to find the elusive story. He considered the possibility that the boy had been lying but, Simon believed in the inherent goodness of the human race and trusted him. After almost half an hour of sorting through books, Simon made it to the end of the row. "I guess there was nothing to find here. Dang this is annoying." He went to the next row and continued his search.


It was pretty much the same thing as the first few rows, trying to find the right book. Over, under, behind it really could be anywhere really. So he had to be vigilant and dedicated putting in his best effort and only his best effort to ensure that he wouldn't miss his objective. Nothing scared Simon more than taking all this effort and not finding something. But what would be worse would be coming back empty handed and having to tell the poor lady that he was unable to find the book. It would be shameful to him and very unfortunate for the old women. About twenty minutes later he found a book stashed behind the others. He pulled it out and looked at the cover.

'Normal Dice' :

"March of the Ancients" your run of the mill creation myth. Although this one is a lot more possible and logically and scientifically sound than most. Simon spends several minutes searching for it's place, incapable of doing so he returns it to the front desk and returns to the shelves. The books are in total disarray and disorder and as he continues looking he tries to put them back in order as he goes. With this his progress slows to a crawl but he feels a lot better about all of this knowing that he is helping out.


As he rearranges the books he notices that one of the shelves has a compartment in the inside of the shelf revealing a book. It's not the right one, but it adds the possibility that there could be more compartments like it worth checking. Simon checks the other shelves for similar compartments and finds that they all have one, even though he doesn't find any more books in them, it opens possibilities lots of possibilities and might just make the mission a success.

Simon rushes through the library back through the second row checking the shelves for compartments. He finds a few stray books but none are what he is looking for and he scurries about putting them back in place. He heads into the first row and checks the bookshelves. Most of them are empty and Simon approaches the last one. This is his last chance before it is back to shifting through shelves monotonously. Trying to open the compartment the hatch is lodged shut by a book that’s lodged in place by the trim of the shelf, Simon has to rearrange all the books so he can open the compartment. He spends several minutes trying to safely dislodge the book as to prevent any damage to any of the books, it would be sad if he accidently damaged a book that someone cherished, or any book really.

He looks in and just as he loses hope, out of desperation he reaches in and feels around, he finds something that he couldn't see before. He wrestles it out of the slot seeing it is a book he turns it over and looks at the cover.

'Normal Dice' :

Simon's rather tiring skimming of literature continues as he progresses through the rows, doing his best to help rearrange the books while keeping an eye out for the one he is looking for. The last book he found was just some fairy tale that was a load of gibberish and gobbledygook. Row after row, shelf after shelf. The possible places began to deplete and Simon was beginning to question if he should have started on the other side of the library, there are only a few more rows, he has to be getting close. A familiar voice speaks up behind him, "Wow you are still looking? How good can a book be?"

Simon looked at the boy from earlier "Just shut up, it's important that I get it." The kid rolled his eyes "Right well, it doesn't really matter to me if you find it. Buuuuuuuut..." "But what?" "You are getting the Library back in order, and I don't want that, so I'll help you find the book if you get lost." Simon looked the kid over "Ok where is it?" The kid tossed Simon a book "Here you go, I think this was the one you were looking for." Simon ran his hand through his hair "You had it the entire time? Whatever." He turned it over and read the cover

"Oh wow thanks. Now I can bring this too that old lady and get the reward." The kid looked up "Reward? How much are you being offered?" Simon stood up looking for a place to keep the book "Just a couple hundred jewels, not much... HEY!" the kid snatched the book from Simon and bolted for the door. Simon chased after him "Hey what the heck!?" "Sorry if you want the book you have to split the reward with me!" Simon tried to grab at the kid's shirt to stop him, "No way I looked all over for that book, I earned it!"

They barged out of the library, the librarian yelling after them. They ran out into the town square. Simon yelled at the kid "Just give me the book!" "Give me a cut of the money!" Simon groaned "I need that money! I've been living on my own, living off my work as a mage. That book is my rent and roof!" The boy stopped in his tracks "Wait you’re a mage?" Simon dived at him trying to take the book, the boy threw him off and Simon fell to the ground. The kid laughed "No way that is true, you’re a wimp!" Simon stood up dusting himself off "I've forgotten more about magic than you'll ever know!" "Wait isn't that lame?" Simon rolled his eyes "No it means I've learned so much that the percentage that I've forgotten is more then you will ever learn." The kid scratched his head "Well I guess that makes some sense?"

He tossed the book in the air and caught it "Well what kind of magic can you use?" Simon grinned "I use dodgeball magic, it lets me create magic balls to spike at stuff and they blow up in cool ways." The boy tapped his foot "Then why haven't you stopped me yet?" "Well while I may be weak of body, my magic can seriously hurt people. Plus I don't want to damage the book." The youth examined the book "Tell you what, you see that bottle at the end of that alley?" Simon looked down the alley, the bottle was sitting on top of a fence a good distance away. The boy went on "If you can hit it from here with your magic, I'll give you back this book deal?" Simon looked back at the bottle and back at the boy, "Deal."

Simon stood at the entry of the alley way, the boy standing nearby watching expectantly. Simon looked at him “Hey what’s your name?” “Devlin. Why?” Simon shrugged “No particular reason. I just like to know people’s names.” He checked with Devlin to make sure that they were looking at the same bottle, after a minute of confusing dialog that probably could have been avoided they were both confident that they were on the same page, or well same bottle. The young dodgeball mage was having some trouble choosing his spell, his heavy spike was big and would almost certainly hit the bottle, but it might be out of range, or his power spike was big and had pretty good range but might damage local property. The razor spike was flawed simply for the purpose that it was spontaneous and unpredictable, and the pain spike was out because it couldn’t break the bottle even if it hit. So after some logical reasoning all the seemed reasonable was the speed spike, it had the range, the power and wouldn’t damage any of the surrounding buildings if it hit them.


He took a deep breath and focused on the bottle, he clapped his hands together, and slowly with precision he drew them apart revealing a glowing orb of energy it grew in his hands until it was the size of a dodgeball. The light illuminated the alley and the bottle refracted the light and made unusual light shapes to appear across the walls, Devlin seems taken back by the spell and stumbles backward. Simon throws the orb into the air “Speed Spike!” he slams his hand into it and the ball flies through the air, bottleward.

'Damage Dice' :

The bottle shattered with the impact of the ball, which dispated as it hit the wall behind the bottle. With the energy ball gone the alley dimmed, Simon looked to Devlin "So can I have the book?" Devlin grinned ear to ear "That was awesome! Man you've got to show me the rest of your abilties!" Simon frowned "Give me the book. I promise to show you some other time." Devlin sighed "Fine take the book, it doesn't matter. I'm going to hold you too that promise though." Simon laughed and took the book "Ok, thank you. I'll make sure to vist sometime and show off my moves. Maybe if I can improve my magic I can get some real good moves to show you." Devlin grinned "Alright you better!" Simon started to walk a way and waved back "I will. Try not to cause the librarian too much grief." Devlin laughed "No promises there."

Simon had started walking to the library but got too excited and ended up running. He burst in through the door, he walked over to the librarian "I got the book!" The librarian smiled "I see, I also noticed you helped reorganize the shelves some. Thanks for that. So do you have a library card." Simon digged into his pocket "Yeah the old lady who sent me gave me hers." he pulled out the card and gave it to the libraian with the book. She took it and stamped the card and the book and handed them back to Simon "Make sure to return them on time." Simon took the two items and stored them in his bag "I will thank you."

Simon left the library and began the long walk back to give the book to the old lady who had employed him. Misson complete.
