Elvira stared at drab but pristine wall of the iLac factory's waiting area. She wondered what is was made out of...it looked perfectly smooth...plastic? Some kind of composite? Where did the materials come from? How do you make plastic anyways? Her mind was wandering, as it often did, to things that really had nothing to do with her current situation: Standing in the back of the slowly moving line which snaked towards the iLac showroom.
"Thanks so much mommy! Now I can finally chat with Zora!" A happy little girl proclaimed, clutching one of the shiny new devices to her chest as she departed the store with her mother. The line inched forward again.
Finally Elvira was actually getting close enough to see all the devices on offer, now came the really hard part; there were so many colors and styles, but it was only one per customer. She had so many outfits that it seemed she would have little choice but to chose black, lest it clash with something later. Different cases were available though, she could switch between those, but how to chose? Switching also seemed problematic because then she couldn't do much customization; it wouldn't be her iLac.
As her mind flitted quickly about the window displays, the line dwindled, until finally she walked into the showroom itself. She shoved her hand into her bag and rummaged around to ensure that the neatly folded voucher Theo had give her had survived the trip. She pulled it out while tapping the slender index finger of her other hand against her full lips. Fashion isn't everything...
She walked up to a large display within the store featuring three over-sized cardboard cutouts, each beside a stack of iLacs. The cutouts each featured an Exceed: The first was blue, the second white, and the third black, with a scar above his eye. Each of these iLacs was similarly colored to the Exceed they seemed to represent and came with a pair of ears which would fit snugly atop the device. After considering for a moment she picked up the blue one; blue was always one of her favorite colors and the dopey-but-determined expression the Exceed's face sold her on it. She felt that way sometimes: Dopey. She tried to never let on just how unsure of herself she often was. She smiled and grabbed the iLac's case before heading up to the counter and holding it up for the girl at the register.
"This one please." She said, still smiling.
"Ah good choice! I have that same one." The girl said with a little giggle. "That little guy is a pretty divisive mascot around here. People either love him or think he's reeaaaaaaal annoying."
"Well, I think he's cute." Elvira responded, considering the small technological marvel as the girl took her voucher.
"Me too!" The girl said, waving goodbye as Elvira exited the showroom.
She found a quiet corner and sat down on a couch, looking her new possession over and eventually holding down the button to activate it.
"I'm a cat!" The small Exceed who appeared on the screen exclaimed before it switched to a menu screen. She laughed and pulled out a small notebook to begin punching in the codes of the people who already had the last version of the handy device.
