- Faeren Info:
- Overview
Faerens are small cat-like beasts with feathery wings and moth-like antennae.
Diet
Faerens live on a diet of fruits and occasionally insects. They love sweet fruits most, and most avoid tangy or sour fruits. They need very little Vitamin C, and too much can make them ill.
Temperament
Many Faerens are mischievous and playful, loving to play pranks and joke around. They love to cuddle, and this causes them to have frequent times where a large amount of them cuddle together to strengthen their bonds.
Natural Habitat
Faerens naturally live in the forests in the southern parts of Fiore. They live in the deepest, lushest parts of the forest, in clans of family groups, sharing food and shelter.
Behavior
Faerens communicate in many different ways. While they can be taught Fiorian to interact with humans, they mostly use sounds and body language with other faerens. Their body language and sounds are similar to a cat - trying to look bigger when angry by puffing up their fur, spreading their wings out. When frightened, they make themselves smaller and less threatening. They are very vocal creatures, and most are quite friendly. But when they fight, it is all teeth, claws, fur, and feathers flying about. When they do fight it is usually until death, as it is usually for self-defense.
Amongst members of their own clan, Faerens are quite affectionate, often rubbing against each other in passing or taking the time to groom one another during the hottest part of the day. When there are kits in the clan, the entire clan is part of rearing them, playing with them and watching over them just as dutifully as the parents. The leader of a clan will often put aside the time to help oversee training the young how to find ripe fruit.
Faerens are quite shy toward humans, but when they do interact with them in trust, they are like affectionate, intelligent pets.
Appearance
Adult Faerens are usually about 4-6 inches from head to the base of their tail, said tail usually being 4-6 inches in length as well. They usually are about 4-5 inches tall from top of the head to the ground. Their wingspan is, at full spread, 8-10 inches wide. They usually weigh about 1-1.5 pounds. Faeren females tend to be smaller and have softer hues with darker markings and have soft, fuzzy ‘feelers’ on their heads; and males tend to be larger, with darker colors and lighter markings, with thinner antennae. Their markings can be many different patterns, but the two most common are spots and stripes.
Hierarchy
Faeren clans have a rather simple hierarchy, a single male leader defines and protects the territory, his mate usually helps lead the resource gathering, the other males in the clan help defend the territory and the other females gather resources and rear young. The clans tend to be anywhere from four to ten in number of adults.
Reproduction/rearing young
Faerens form lifelong bonds with their mates, and due to this, it can take some time to actually choose one. They go through three stages, the first being the ‘attraction’ phase, where the male attempts to entice the female he chooses with displays of strength and beauty. Then, when she expresses interest in return, they move to stage two, the ‘courtship’ phase. The male begins giving gifts to the female and making time to groom her fur and rub against her more frequently. If she does not push him away, they move into the third and final stage, when they are considered mates and will begin to parent kits.
Kits are usually born in litters of one to ten kits, born completely fur and featherless, eyes and ears closed, about the size of quarters. Over their first week, they begin to grow their base coat and down feathers. Near the beginning of their second week, their ears open, and by the end of their second week, their eyes are open as well. Their third week is when they begin shakily walking and getting their thicker coats and their patterns begin showing. At six weeks, they are weaned, have their patterns and their flight feathers, and begin being taught to fly. At eight weeks, they are considered juveniles instead of kits and are considered such until they are five years of age.
