It was an odd sensation to be stood in the middle of a stranger’s house when they were not in it. For the next two days the house owner, who introduced herself to Pia as Gracie an hour earlier before departing, would be on vacation in another city, leaving it up to the young mage to tend to her house and complete all of the tasks the woman had provided. The owner of the house had left the impression that she was a very carefree, jolly woman, so Pia feared not of letting the woman down with her work- but that didn’t mean she was going to be a slacker! She aimed to get the job done in one day so that she could have one day off to herself; peering around the house in which she stood, it seemed like a reasonable goal. This job had been the perfect break for Pia, cleaning was therapeutic and relaxing for her – she was essentially being paid to have a good time. Not to mention she had ounces of experience from working as a cleaner in her adoptive mothers bathhouse.

The girl had come well prepared as to reduce the size of any problems she might encounter, one item she already knew she would need straight away after being informed by Gracie that “there’s a pesky fly problem”. Silently thanking her past self for packing the bug zapper, she pulled it out of her bag and set it up on the kitchen table where the fly problem seemed to be at its worse. Normally she would have felt a deep pang of guilt watching living beings die before her eyes, but Pia was well educated on the fact that insects like flies already outnumbered humans immensely, therefore ceasing any remorse from the situation.

Leaving the bug zapper to do its work, Pia moved on to her next task, remembering that Gracie had also mentioned a leak. After rummaging around in the kitchen for a pan, she headed upstairs to the houses master bedroom, humming a cheerful tune to herself as she bounced up the carpeted steps. The bedroom was modest in design, one double bed in the centre of the room, a few wooden bookshelves and a chest of drawers against the walls. It would have been a pretty sight if not for the assortment of other pans on the floor, now full of water which was trickling from the ceiling. Shrugging her shoulders, Pia moved all of the other pans out of the way, placing her own down as she started taking each of the other pans downstairs to empty and clean them.

Once all of the pans were washed and put away in the kitchen, Pia skipped back up the stairs once again, having noted whilst she was in the kitchen that there was now not a single trace of any flies. Looking up at the ceiling, standing on the crimson carpet, Pia squinted her eyes at the tiny hole which was letting water through from outside, deciding what to do. Concluding that she would find a solution in her bag, she rummaged among her supplies till she came across what only a naïve mermaid would consider appropriate: tape. It took little effort to push the bed into a position where she could stand on it whilst she patched up the small hole above her, having not been able to reach it from the ground despite her generous height. As she placed the tape over the leak and ceased the trickle of water she couldn’t help but chew her bottom lip as she reflected upon her actions. It didn’t look very… professional. At least it stopped the leak though.

Picking up her bag of supplies once again, Pia smiled as she examined her days work, thinking of how proud Shino would be if she could see her handiwork. She hoped that the owner of the house, Gracie, would return after her vacation and be equally impressed with the state of her house. Unplugging the bug zapper and sweeping away the remains of the flies with unfortunate ends, she packed the last of her equipment away, managing to squeeze in a little more light sweeping up into her schedule. With her bag now slung over her shoulder she turned off all the lights before exiting the house, locking the door firmly behind her, her hand lingering on the door knob as if to say farewell. What a cute little house, she thought to herself, a serene smile upon her lips as she walked down the cobbled path back to a house of her own.
