    -------------------------======================-----------------------

It was a community, somewhere between a small town and large village of people… a rest stop between the dark lands of monstrous horrors and the safety of civilization. One which relied upon its hunters to gather its food, services sold to mages and soldiers whose tasks took them into the darknesss and what trade it could send off to towns further away from the monsters lurkin in the night.

However despite being relatively well off, one mishap after another kept setting the majority of its towns people back. Wagon wheels breaking, saddle straps snapping and an all manner of unfortunate events forcing the desperate people to either walk upon foot to flee the coming rumors of monster hordes, or do what they can to fix everything to leave with their belongings… if they desired retreat at all.

A sigh of boredom escaped the seemingly seven year old’s lips as he gazed down at the people frantically packing up a wagon below him, lounging idly on the balcony of the merchant’s shop as the rest of the family stowed away their most precious possessions. For three weeks he had been in this town, sabotaging any attempts to aid in a mass evacuation. Disabling wagons, poisoning animals, making accidents befall the people who could repair and lend aid.

Systematically lowering the odds for survival day after day, all in order to entrap the desperate to sell their souls to their mistress and to let the monsters feast upon their arrival. It was beginning to get rather “Boring…. Where are they?” Vox muttered, eyes moving away the soon to be dead family down the street where what militia they could form moved to prepare for the incoming raid. Soldiers had left days ago to scout and attempt to delay the incoming monsters…. Vox had other business to attend to besides babysitting a town waiting for an attack with only one other accomplish.

At the forest’s edge, Arianna stood in wait. Clouds blanketed the sky, darkening as if they were ready to rain. The young woman stood in silence, arms crossed as she waited for… something. Her head turned towards the base of a large tree that stood only a stone’s throw from the clearing of the forest. The tree probably stood there longer than even the village that Arianna had been staring down. Its girth would take nearly 5 people joining arms to even wrap around, and its roots had left many nooks and crannies for hidden items, including the weapons and armor her partner in crime had left for her.

“How vile…” She scoffed as she donned the leather breastplate and bracers. She despised using such humanizing ways of fighting, but it would have to do. Since becoming freed from the slumber her mother had taken her out of, her power seemed to still be trying to wake up, unable to use her spells at the moment. As she armed herself to the teeth, with two hand swords at her hips, a greatsword on her back, and a half dozen daggers, the sounds of an approaching horde of monsters could be heard in the distance. “About time.”

The members of Grim Heresy knew of the monsters growing more aggressive as they were starting to strike out at places they previously never ventured close enough to begin with. In fact, one might say that they played a ‘small’ part in provoking them. Eris’ influence did run throughout the worlds.

As she picked up a buckler to attach to her bracer, the sounds of branches and limbs breaking grew upon her, yet she seemed undisturbed as she continued her preparation. She could feel the sudden heat of their breaths on her neck as the noise paused. As she picked up the round shield left for her, she turned to see the group of monsters that were waiting behind her.

In front of her stood upwards of twenty cyclops, the largest of which stared her down, trying to assert dominance as it beat its chest. She simply stared him down, unflinching as he growled about before he simply backed down, suddenly realizing he wasn’t messing with some normal human or even a mage. He was up against the child born from a force of nature.

Her glare kept on him as he marched his army of cyclops past her, heading straight towards the village. She too would slowly take a step in that direction until a snap of a branch above her made her turn her head skyward. Above her had been a slithering mass of snakes, all nearly twenty feet in length and even had greater numbers than the cyclops. Though their length wasn’t their most outstanding feature, it was the fact that they each had two heads. A large snake turned both of its heads towards the woman at the ground, flickering its forked tongues at her before turning back around and slithering off. It too knew that she wasn’t something to be trifled with.

She stepped forth from the forest, walking through the fields surrounding the village as the screams from the villagers had already begun. This would be a cakewalk as a fire had already started in the town. Several cyclopes were running after villagers in the fields, noting how a few villagers had suddenly dropped to the ground with nothing around them, or at least it seemed. She could see the tops of some wheat flicker shortly after the villagers would drop, hinting that a snake was most likely stalking the fields for some easy meals.

As she walked into the village itself, she could see several bodies scattered across the dirt roads, none of them moving. The growls and roars of the cyclops filled the air as the fire began to grow stronger. She kept walking forward, heading towards the center of the town. She hadn’t truly come to do much herself, but was more or less there to make sure things went smoothly. If a beacon of hope were to try to stand up, she’d have to tear them down quickly.

“H-Help!” A nearby voice caused her to stop as she turned in time for a woman to fall to her knees, clutching up at her. “Y-you’ve got to help me… t-they’re killing everyone!” Arianna’s gaze seemed to go right through her. She didn’t care for the woman’s pleas for help, she cared more about some lowly being having the audacity to actually dirty her clothes. “Y-you have weapons, you have to be some kind of soldier, right!?” A hand went towards a sword on her hip, drawing it with a glimmer from the growing blaze.

“O-Oh thank go-” The woman was about to speak again, but she’d find it awfully hard as Arianna dragged her sword across her throat. Blood splattered across her leather breast plate before the woman fell to the ground, clawing at her as her life slipped away. “Filth.” Was all that Arianna felt like saying to the dying human, walking off after kicking the hand away.

Things hardly seemed to go astray for herself, almost strolling through town as she watched whole buildings go up in smoke, cyclopes beating down doors for villagers trying to hide, and two-headed snakes working their ways into small spaces after some villagers that managed to barricade themselves away from the cyclopes.

Arianna almost seemed displeased at how easy it all was. Here she was, the daughter of the great dragon, Asmodeus, standing about and simply watching all the destruction. To say she was bored of how everything was going would be an understatement. Simply watching over the monsters was as uninteresting as can be. She’d have to punish her partner later on for suggesting that they go aid the monsters. Instead of doing much more, she simply turned around to leave. She wasn’t needed here anymore, or needed there at all for that matter. Just being there had put her in a sour mood.

Pillage! Monster Job Event Empty Re: Pillage! Monster Job Event

The screams started, alarms went off and soldiers began to try and get the panicking civilians to a designated safety zone. It was finally time for his mission to end, the monsters had broken through. Pushing himself up to his feet, the young boy slipped back into the building and pryed up a floorboard, revealing his stashed equipment while ignoring the frantic crys of the child’s parents.

“Anthony! Anothny its time to go!” A woman’s frantic voice called out as she barged into the room, eyes filling with relief as she gazed down at Vox crouching on the floor. Relief turned to confusion, then slowly stunned fear as she watched her little boy raise up and began to transform. Going from her precious child, holding a sword to a mirror image of herself with one, right before it ran its blade through her chest.

“Lets see what we can do to help our new friends, shall we?” Vox said to herself with a warm smile towards the dying woman, as one hand clasped her throat to prevent screams from alerting the others. As the life faded from the mother’s eyes, Vox resumed donning its equipment. It was time to open up a snack for some monsters to enjoy.

The father laid bleeding on the ground as the mother slowly wiped the blood from her blade, eyes glancing over towards the cowering child in the back of the wagon before sheathing the weapon. Eyes raising up to the sky to see the Griffin flying overhead, dropping an unfortunate soul to its plummeting death.

Lips pursed as she let out a whistle, ending abruptly just as the body would slam into the ground. “Fairwell child, twas truly a pleasure being your brother for a week.” Vox said in a cheerful tone while shifting forms once again, to that of an average, male militia guard. A buckler on one arm, shield held in the other hand. Great sword slung across his back, daggers adorning his leather armor and sword in hand.

With a final wave goodbye to the doomed child, Vox took off in a jog towards a nearby Safe Haven, a cellar of a nearby building. Brown eyes glanced over at the two soldiers assisting an elderly woman into it, recognizing her as one of the town’s retired maged. Age was not kind to her, and left her too weakened to aid in anything but defending those who had no hope of fighting back themselves.

“Madam Veronica! The merchant family is lost, no other civilians.” Vox called out, coming to a stop behind the two trained soldiers and weakened mage, eyes shifting over to give one of the armored men a nod while a curse escaped the frail lady’s lips.

“Damned fools, come along child. You three shall have to keep watch, while I maintain the barrier.” Veronica said, heading inside towards the general store’s backroom.

“Yes Ma’am!” All three said in union, one soldier moving over to take up post watching out the main room’s window while the second headed upstairs. Glancing from one to another, Vox moved over to follow the man heading upstairs as a pulse went out from the building, and runes appeared on the ground around it… the barrier was established.

The two of them walked in silence as they walked down the hallway towards some of the doors farther down, the soldier was given an order about which room for Vox to go into. Vox however merely gave a general response agreeing, while his hand slowly drew a dagger. As the soldier’s hand turned the door’s knob, Vox struck. The dagger slamming into the man’s neck, through the armor joints to have blood spill forth. His cry however, was not silienced. Vox missed his mark, and wrestled with the man until he could leave such a horrendous gash that the man had no choice but to perish before succumbing to his fate.

With haste Vox shoved him into the room and closed the door as his form shifted to that of the soldier, with a slash on his neck and crumpled to the ground. The sound of the second soldier’s footsteps was the onlything filling the silience as the man rushed up the stairs, weapon drawn and cautiously approached the bloody scene.

“Fred?” The asked cautiously, eyes slipping from door to door as he approached the crumpled form. Kneeling down to place his hand onto Vox’s neck, checking for if he had passed on already the man was greeted with a dagger slashing his thigh open, severing an artery as the man screamed out in pain.

Vox’s form rolled away and rose up as quickly as the dagger had lashed out, raising his shield up defensively while forgoing the small blade in favor for his sword. Meeting the soldier’s glaring eyes with calm blue, before taking a step forward to lash out with a blade only to be parried.

Time was on Vox’s side, and based on the strength of the soldier’s swing which sent him stumbling down the stairs, cracking the wooden shield that had blocked it; that was the only thing Vox had on his opponent.

“I was mislead… I believed the woman only knew barriers and lighting magic.” Vox said, raising to his feet while the soldier flung himself down the stairs, tackling Vox to the ground to sink a dagger into his side. Piercing what would normally have been a vital organ on a human, but merely being a fleshy sack to Vox. A grunt of pain still escaped his lips however, as Vox responded with a knee into the soldier’s bleeding leg. Eyes locked onto the runes activating on the soldier’s body, empowering him to fight on.

A punch to Vox’s face sent his head slamming to the ground, and as a the dagger pulled back to strike out once more Vox’s form shifted to that of a python, causing the strike to sink into the wooden ground as its form quickly started wrapping around the soldier. Squeezing desperately, only to have the soldier’s enhanced strength hold the crushing at bay. But it was enough, Vox encased the soldier in layers upon lays of coils, keeping the pressure up as it felt the man’s strength fade with his blood, until finally the coils got as tight as they could and the man’s life was forfeit as he lost consciousness.

Shifting back into the militia’s form, Vox plucked up a dropped dagger and slammed the blade into the fallen soldier’s skull, ending him once and for all. Vox’s brown eyes shifted over towards the area that the mage had gone into as he pulled the dagger out of the corpse’s head. A glance back out of the window at the lack of runes was all that he needed to know that a bad time was waiting for him if he dared to go after the civilians and the mage directly.

Rolling his shoulders he instead did what he did best, pick a route with the least risk and unexpected… Gather the materials needed to light the entire building on fire. Force the mage to either waste her mana on the fire, or order the escape into the streets and fight off the monsters in plain sight.

Lounging on the opposite building’s roof Vox watched the building burn, the flames crawling steadily over it as the entire thing was consumed. All throughout the town hell was breaking loose as the monsters swarmed, distracting any help that the old woman could possibly hope for.

As the building started to collapse and the gusts of wind coming from above Vox’s idle observations came to an end as a griffin landed next to him. Eyes peering down inquisitively.

“Most likely perished by now, old age did nothing to aid her like so many fairytales tell of old mages. Majority of the wagons had been disabled, and animals sick. Continue the pressure and only the very earliest to leave would be the sole surivivors of this town.”

The creature’s feathers ruffled, as it turned its eyes to the collapsing building, before letting out an echoing roar as it took off. Flying out along the road, there would be no survivors if it had anything to do with it.
